Best english teacher I've had. A very respectful person and extremely helpful. She doesn't do Shakespeare and does minimal poetry which i liked.
Very unclear lecture notes. Exceptionally hard to please. Does not offer much insight into what is expected, rarely returns emails. Very friendly, nice lady, but expects way too much for the quality of teaching she provides
STAY AWAY FROM HER!! Expect way too much and mark extremely tough. Drop her class before you can! Don't let your GPA goes down because of her.
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!! Where to even begin... her notes are random words all over the page that you need a dictionary to understand...she goes off in her own little english world and then an hour goes by and she doesnt understand how our time is up again!! she doesnt explain anything that relates to her essay assignments. you would be better
Oh Colleen. She's cool man. just listen to what she says. if you talk about what she tas about in class on her exams ur good to go. she just loves english. she does absoloute minimal in grammar. picks decent stories. didn't mind going to class at all. she talks about interesting topics.
She marks really hard and her midterm and final are quite hard. For the final you are expected to identify the work, the author, the character and the plot of a story from a quote. She takes attendance at each class. The classes are somewhat interesting but you read triple the amount of material the other classes read.
She actually takes attendance in class and you get marks on if you showed up and talked in class. She's part native so about a quarter of the year is spent doing native stories that appear to be all the same. . try to read the novels before she says you need to because she gives you about 3 days to read a couple hundred pages
Get out of her class right away unless you like to read dreadful native stories (she is part native). She also tends to favor some of her students but other than that she is a pretty hard marker. If she doesn't like what you write then you will get owned. Waste of money taking her class, STAY AWAY FROM HER!
Relatively hard marker, but provides an early hand-in date for essays with the option of reworking them for a better mark. The stories she chooses are quite male-centric so prepare to feel underrepresented if you're a woman. However, she is a very smart woman with an obvious love of literature. Exams are lots of writing and very text specific.
Coleen loves native stories and you read ALOT of them. The mid-terms are very difficult because she was high standards. With that, she give a lot of opportunity for help too. She has early hand in dates for improved marks and offers meetings to make sure you are on the right track for essays. She definitely cares about teaching. Good Luck!
Nice lady, good teacher and interested in what she is teaching. Coming to class is mandatory as she doesn't post notes on blackboard and she covers a lot of material and gives a lot of info and expects you to remember all of it for tests. She gives lots of choices for essays and has an early hand in date, which is nice.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!! This professor favors students, and if she doesn't like you your marks will show it. You read native stories, and discuss the plight of natives rather than learning reading and writing skills. She does provide an early hand in date for essays but if she doesn't like you or disagrees with your opinion you are doomed! H
Had her for 6 credit course in 07/08. Excellent English teacher, I left Macewan to move out back East but the writing skills she helped me hone are a major reason Im a dean's list student now. Thanks!
Terrible! Colleen refuses so help you or even reply to an email. I work just as hard as everyone else. I am quiet in class and dont talk often. Somehow the other students get a better grade even though we have nearly the same paper!?!?
Run away fast, worst teacher ever!
Get out while you still can!
YOUR GPA WILL SUFFER WITH COLLEEN IRWIN!!!!
I used to like english.....
She is nice lady, and her classes are interesting if you read all required materials. I took ENGL 102-103 condensed course, and the amount of reading I had to do was unbelievable. She has very high expectation on papers thus she marks hard. REALLY HARD. However, at the end, it was one of the classes that I felt like I actually learned something.
Classes are interesting, she is a fair marker and helps you when needed. Her tests and selected readings are challenging at times. She has an early hand in date for essays which is nice. Interesting woman, and is very respectful towards students and their opinions. She likes students who speak up and makes the effort to know the quiet ones as well.
She is such a nice teacher. you may not like her at first, but if you go upto her with any questions, trust me you'll like her. I thought she was a hard marker, like everyone else too. But she makrs fair, and the best tihng about her is that she is really nice nd she is really helpful.
I've found that everyone here syas your GPA will suffer. That's not what I found as her expectations are clear and she is available for help during her office hours. She took the material and made it as interesting as possible. And as to the native stories, there were 2, and approached in an analytical way.
Talks to 3 keeners at the front of the class and ignores everyone else. 3rd years sociology major barely passing her class. Ridiculous expectation for the Amount of reading required. Not friendly to me at all. She didn't like me or the rest of the "guys" in the back. Write everything she says because her powerpoints are useless/ doesn't use BB
Fair marker. Clear expectations for assignments. Doesn't use BlackBoard. Inconsistent (or sometimes nonexistent) email responses. Very helpful with questions (in person); speak to her before/after class or during office hours. Accomodating with late/problematic assignments if you approach her early. Lectures held my interest. Had fun learning.
you'd think that for introductory english she would be mark reasonably easy. NO she is such a hard marker its ridiculous! We read essays everyday, only to never be tested or thought about again. such a waist of time to go to class. My GPA is definitely going to suffer
Very difficult prof. I found that if she doesn't like you from the beginning, she'll be bias toward you all year. being first year course you would think that she would thoroughly explain MLA and how to properly cite, but she kinda just throws it at you. too many essays read also. I think she needs a different approach
She tries to be helpful, and is clear in conveying her biases to you. Her marking is absolutely absurd. Follow her guidelines perfectly, and you might end up with a B. Recommended only taking this class with her if you have a passion for comparative literature. Otherwise just take a language and save your GPA.
She marks hard, but it really helps you to improve. She's quite fair. She encourages deeper thinking and life application. A holistic teacher. She's understanding about late assignments when emergencies come up. Lectures held my interest and made me look at things differently. I now love comparitive literature and literature in general. Great Prof!
She's a hard marker but if you make your point clear on your essay you will still get a passing mark. She is a great teacher since she does point out your strength and tell you where your weakness lie
Every class you need to read a new short story (roughly 10 pages) then she talks too deeply into it. Being a first year class I wasnted an easier class with a higher GPA, however this class will definitly do the opposite. Her outline is okay however will not tell you whats on theexam until late in the semester..No idea what to do here...
Really nice, friendly lady. She could possibly work on her clarity, but overall I really enjoyed her lectures and found her to be quite interesting. I found her to be a pretty easy marker as long as you can write an essay. She may be better for an older student with more experience because she expects some level of competence.
The class is fairly easy to follow, but you must attend daily! She shall give info on assignments that are not posted! Also a hard marker. Ive found that she enjoys essay to be "dumbed down." Don't try to impress her with wording! Clear and straight to the point. She can be anal when she wants!
Her classes are okay. She can be intimidating! But she marks fairly!
Please note that this woman creates the most difficult and in depth exam I have ever written. During the class, although she was nice in person, I hated her class. I have literally not been more stressed about a final before. I do have to admit that I now know my literature because of her. If you like to BS your way through classes, run.
If you do all the readings and attend every class you will find both the midterm and final exam extremely easy. (Note: the final has passage analysis portion). When writing essays, use a simple essay format to get the best results mark wise -- clear thesis, premises (body), conclusion. No fluff, this isn't a creative writing course. Great Prof!!!
Don't take her class unless you are extremely passionate about literature and a good writer. Her lectures are extremely interesting but she does not discuss assignments in class and expects students to have complex ideas and know how to express them clearly. She is quite intimidating, but I think if you love/are good at writing, you'd love her.
Very dry lectures. She tells you nothing about assignments and for a first year student it was extremely hard to know what to expect. She ha participation marks but she does not learn ur name so really she just takes attendance and that's ur participation. Not a very good prof. Wouldn't want her for 103.
She's a very hard marker. I've never done badly in an english course until her. She also gives uninteresting lectures and will mention important concepts once and expect you to know them. We read too many books (12 in a semester) and spent 3 classes on The Odyssey which is more than a week's read, especially with other classes.
Very difficult class. Impossible amount of monstrous readings, vague assignment instructions and lectures and notes, meticulous and ruthless marker, and a VERY daunting and literally terrifying final. And I'm a writer. I will not be ever taking another class with her.
I don't understand why her ratings are so bad, so far i love colleen. she is very helpful if you need assistance on assignments and will even edit your essays for you. shes a fair marker but you must attend class everyday. if you attend, do all the readings and put effort in the class youll do well. for an english class it was interesting.
She doesnt reply to emails. She Marks extremely hard on essays. Never take a class Colleen teachs. Her classes are GPA killers.
STAY AWAY DO NOT TAKE CLASS FIND A DIFFERENT PROFF
From going to honours english to her class, I pretty much failed. Hard marker, unclear lectures, too many readings, difficult essays with impossible topics, and hardest final I have ever written. GPA killer to the max!
I understand some of the comments. However, I enjoyed her as a teacher. There were lots of readings but as long as you did them, showed up for class, and participated in discussions you were set. She is a hard marker however if you understand essay format you shouldn't have a problem passing.
Fair marker, she has expectations and makes them clear. Participation is mandatory as you are marked on it. As long as you do the readings and include yourself in the in class discussions you will be fine. she is always willing to help and answer questions
Really good prof. Marks hard but is very friendly and helpful. Was struggling with a paper and emailed her asking her for help she told me to give her a call. I called her and she walked me through the whole thing at 5:00pm on a Sunday Night! Would love to have Colleen as a prof again.
Seriously recommend finding another prof for this course. Unfair marker. You'll think you're doing well in her class then she'll fail more than half the class on papers and the midterm. Has favourites and only helps those.
Dr. Irwin is most certainly a tough marker, but she does care about her students. It may be the tough-love approach, but she pushes and encourages you to find your true potential. If you are an unmotivated student, this is not the class for you. In addition, she is very approachable and willing to help with essays.
Colleen is a great prof. She is willing to help you if you need anything. She's passionate, knowledgable and makes you a better writer. It was a great class to have her as a professor.
I was not a fan of anything to do with this class. Colleen was so boring and class is mandatory, if you come in late she won't let you sign attendance. We read way too many books than was possible for the difficulty and understanding she wanted. The final was the most terrifying thing I've ever faced in uni and I'm in third year.
Ridiculous expectations and very difficult class. I am a strong english student but this class was incredibly ridiculous. Very nice lady and awesome person but the class is more demanding than any other class I have attended in University.
WORST PROF EVER!!!!! Instructions were very unclear for written essays. Very difficult marker and you are expected to go to class. 10% is for participation. She favoured certain people in class. Her opinion only matters.. I would highly avoid her for first year English students. Shes boring, pointless, and USELESS.
Exceptional prof and very fair marker. Attend class, do your readings and your homework, get help when you need it, and you'll be ok- and learn tons.
Some of y'all are tripping. Colleen is an great prof who values students who actually put an effort in. You need to engage and attend regularly to do well. She is a kind and caring women who is passionate about what she teaches.
Coleen was a great teacher. She explained assignments very clearly, and promoted great discussions in class. YOU HAVE TO DO THE READINGS FOR THIS CLASS. Quizzes were mildly difficult because of how specific the questions were. Hard marker for essays, but she's always available for help- excellent tips if you ask for them.
Dr. Irwin is awesome. She expects her students to put in a lot of effort, but that is to be expected. She is a very tough marker - VERY. She is extremely helpful and approachable. Do the readings for this class and take notes on them. You'll thank me later!
Colleen is an extremely helpful prof, I honestly had my thoughts prior to taking her class. However, she proved me wrong. She is willing to help outside of class and is extremely clear! She is immensely passionate about what she teaches, and its great to get you through this class. Make sure you do your readings!
Not a good professor. Talks in a quiet, monotone voice, and the course outline lacks information. She never replies to emails. She is a GPA killer, if you want a low GPA then take her class.
I was a high 90s student coming out of high school with a 4 in AP English. Colleen is a horrible professor and does not care to help her students understand her expectations. She gave no instructions on how she expected us to write assignments, and would specifically mention that students will do horribly on their papers. AVOID HER CLASS.
Colleen gave absolutely no expectations or directions for assignments. I had been an honours student in English throughout highschool yet this class is dropping my gpa greatly. She rambled on about nothing all class and never truly taught me one thing the entire semester. Avoid her class at all cost! She even takes attendance every class for marks.
Horrible prof. Would NOT recommend anyone to take her class unless it's a last resort. Participation is crucial because she will literally treat you different from other students depending on how many classes you miss. Not helpfulclear with any of her assignments whatsoever and never checks her email. Like no I don't wanna text you. GPA killer.
Colleen is a traditional teacher, she values attendance and completion of all the readings. Prior to going into her class, I read the reviews and was quite skeptical. However, constant attendance and average attentiveness throughout her class are all you need to be successful. NOTE: Make sure you do ALL the readings !
Horrible teacher!!! My class was 2 weeks behind because she doesn't actually teach anything useful and just likes to hear her own voice. Also a GPA killer! She forgot to input a bunch of my marks causing me to receive academic probation until I confronted her. Avoid her completely, worst teacher I have ever had in MY ENTIRE LIFE.
Colleen is quiet and frequently tangential in her discussion of materials we've covered. That said, if you can pay attention and involve yourself in discussions, you'll be more than fine. Very tough marker, but apply her feedback and your writing skills will benefit greatly. I recommend sitting near the front of the class if you've got her.
A LOT of reading but she grades essays pretty easily.
Worst prof Ive had. Long rants are pointless. If you dont participate in class she targets you and doesnt mark you as easy as those who answer questions. I would never recommend her to anyone.
Worst english teacher i have ever had to deal with. If you can avoid taking her please do
Worst professor I have ever had, including the ones that did not speak english...
Doesn't like answering questions because she doesn't want to give away the answer. Quizzes after every reading & its short answer. Quizzes are a random line pulled from the reading to make sure you read it. eg."What was the type of bread she was eating"... Expect to memorize the date, place of origin, & author of every reading. Takes attendance!
Most students who have Colleen write off the class since participation is mandatory but she is an incredible professor. She is very clear about what she expects from you and if you take notes you have every answer you need. The weekly quizzes might seem like a drag at first but the answers are easy and they are a great way to bump from a B to an A.
Do the readings, participate, and don't write your papers the night before. Plain and simple. She is a tough grader but she is fair. Write your papers with enough time left to edit your rough draft and you'll be fine. Make sure to do the readings, she gives pop quizzes but they're EASY (if you do readings) and will boost your mark.
I took her my first semester in Sciences, she was tough. She is a tough marker, and is clear-cut. Don't expect to pass unless you're really serious about this course and want to pass. She takes attendance.
GPA killer. Seriously, drop the class or take it from somebody else.
Colleen gives participation marks, based on attendance and quizzes she gives after every short story read. However, I felt she had something of a disdain for the students right out of high school and felt if you didn't know something, you weren't paying enough attention. She offers help if asked but is somewhat unapproachable. Tough marker.
Terrible. Is not helpful whatsoever. Avoid if possible. She does not focus on what matters. Takes forever to mark an assignment and is very inconsistent in marking.
Takes forever to grade, and her comments are very vague. Did not enjoy this class at all.
Yes, colleen has mandatory attendance, however you are paying to learn. If you attend class, do the readings, and write your paper 2-3 days before the deadline you will get an A. She allows re-submissions, and is incredibly helpfull if you go see her. Her class is a GPA booster. Readings before classes vary from 3 pages to 10, they are short. 10/10
This class was difficult, and i found that many of the objectives in the syllabus were not met. She went off on personal opinion tangents that had nothing to do with the class. Perhaps she should teach native studies, not a rhetorical analysis class as i did not learn anything about it. Lectures were quite boring also.
I love Colleen! She's such a sweet lady and goes out of her way to help students. I have no idea why she doesn't have better reviews. She outlines exactly what she expects from her students and if you're still unclear about it she is just a text away. She is respectful and encouraging to all of her students. I would take this class again.
She is an excellent teacher in the fact that she is always there to help and will let you rewrite papers. However, I feel like she does not teach the course content. Colleen specializes in the native American literature, and I found that her class was more of a native studies class then an English class, I was super disappointed as I did not learn any eng
She goes out of topic . Her lectures say all about native .
I don't understand why she doesn't have a higher rating. I loved this professor. You have to work a little bit harder to get above a B, but it is not unrealistic at all to get an A in this class with her. She gives amazing feedback and is always there if you need help. Expectations on midterms and assignments are extremely straight forward.
Colleen is a very nice woman who is very knowledgeable about the subject. I found her to be very straight forward and helpful
It felt more like a native studies class. I focused so much on memorizing First Nations terms and topics and writers, I didn't learn anything relating to improving my writing and analysis skills.
SO MUCH READING. More of a Native Studies course than an English course. Literally used the textbooks twice in class. Your grade is based on three things: quizzes on the readings, essays, and participation (you have to sign your name for attendance). Decent course if you are a strong writer and reader, but not so easy if you aren't.
Hope you like Native Studies.
Focuses soley on native studies... if you find that interesting then great but I do not recommend her at all!!! Attendance is also with 10% of your grade!!
Great teacher, very informative and very personal. She is super kind, and always willibg to help.
This class does not feel like an English class... it feels like Native Studies. If you like Native Studies, great! If not, avoid at all costs. I might have been able to handle it if she were interesting or enthusiastic, but she isn't.
She takes attendance every class, so if you have a problem with skipping classes in general, don't take her's. Her Engl102 class is all about native studies and literature, so if you're not interested in that, also avoid her class. I found her class to be disorganized and a waste of time some days, and she's hard to get a hold of outside of school.
Dr. Colleen Irwin was an amazing prof this year for English 102, she is inspirational, her classes are fun, the readings she chose for literary analysis were educational and easy to read. She is available during Office hours and is overall amazing. I really appreciate this professor!
Quite a nice class, I must say. Colleen is a nice lady, she focuses primarily on native studies which I found very intriguing. She values attendance and class participation very much, so make sure you come to class prepared. She gives out pop quizzes on class readings as well, and is fairly keen on usage of proper grammar in essays.
Took her english 102 class and was surprised to find out it was more like an Aboriginal studies course. Not too difficult of a grader, but beware of pop quizzes!!!
Lots of in class reading and short quizzes on some of them, so long as you read it's free marks. All in all she's an easy grader and if you get a really low mark on an essay talk to her there's always the option to let you rewrite, she does care about her students so talk to her she'll definitely help and hand you essay sources.
Quizzes on short homework readings, so long as you read it's free marks. She's an easy grader just work on your weaker area's and if you get a really low mark on an essay talk to her there's always the option to let you REWRITE, she actually cares so talk to her! She'll definitely help and hand you essay sources.
Heavy background of Native Studies in this ENGL102 class. Without much interest in Native Studies, you will be bored. However, she marks papers very easy which makes it a breeze to get an A+ if you have any sense of grammar and punctuation. Her light-weighted in-class quizzes are heavily e-reading based, but simple to pass if you do the readings.
Colleen is very nice and caring. Wants students to participate and succeed. However, she is a tough marker and requires students to do a reading before each class that she will test you on. Every reading you will do is based on native studies. Passing this class is not difficult, but don't expect a GPA boost with Colleen.
She is a good prof and gives great feedback on papers. Pop quizzes are a regular occurrence (almost every reading has one). Her lectures are interesting but she gets off topic repeatedly and it often felt more like a native studies class rather than an English class; for example, she spent an entire class discussing the white and red papers.
More of a native studies class then anything. Nice women but lectures are so boring and every reading is about natives. Hard not to skip class.
Before taking this class, I enjoyed English immensely. However, Professor Irwin's absolutely disorganized and pointless lectures have made me hate it. Her marking is all over the place and she expects you to know every little detail about everything. If attendance wasn't mandatory, I would not have gone. Do not take her class if possible.
I honestly couldn't wait to get English out of the way before starting Uni, but Colleen Irwin made me love it. She is funny, brilliant and personable. She gives timely, constructive feedback and makes herself available to answer any questions. She chooses interesting literature, with an emphasis on dark elements of human nature. Amazing.
she's great prof, but she can get a bit personal. Goes out go her way to get to know all of her students. very passionate and you can tell.
Before taking Colleen's class I enjoyed English, and excelled in it. Is a horribly hard marker; Marking criteria is not clear whatsoever. Showing up to class counts toward mark, however, her lectures are completely pointless and dragged out. Oh, and this is not an English class, this is a Native Studies Class. I did not learn 1 thing in this class
Colleen was BY FAR the best professor in my first semester. She teaches her 102 class with aboriginal lit which allows her to also teach from her heart and persuades students to look at things from a different perspective. She is an AMAZING prof. She cares for her students, she is a clear marker, overall she is amazing. KEEP HER IN YOUR TIME TABLE.
Colleen Irwin really cares about her students. She tries really hard to include everyone in the discussion and make it interesting. This particular course focused a lot on aboriginal studies, and be prepared to do lots of readings on that. Best if you go to class because of the year end exams. Great feedback given on papers. Easy A if youre there!
No matter how hard i tried to make my papers perfect i was always deducted marks because of the smallest mistakes! in order to get higher than a B on papers you must meet HER standards! she expected a third year level writer in a first year class. Also knows the writers guide front and back so make sure you buy it for your papers!
Toughest marker was unclear and had pop quizzes wouldnt recommend
Colleen Irwin is very passionate about English but comes across as rude at times, plus instructions are often unclear and she takes awhile to respond to emails (needed a reminder in one instance.) Lectures are tedious and not engaging, and she'll quiz you on the text at any instance she can. Would not recommend
Her lectures are mandatory, and they are extremely boring/tedious. I highly recommend avoiding this class if you can. Assignment instructions are relatively vague, and the topics discussed in class are not really linked to the assignments. I think she is passionate about English and a nice lady, but I would not take her class again.
Horrible, tough marker and the class is an aboriginal studies class. Pop quizzes and was the most boring class I have ever taken.
Doesn't post anything on Blackboard, beware of pop quizzes, unclear assignment instructions, mandatory lectures that are very difficult to sit through. Also pretty rude. Would not recommend.
Colleen is by far the worst prof I have had at MacEwan. The final exam was ridiculously long and specific; although it was only worth 25%, it dropped my mark from an A- to a B-. I STRONGLY ADVISE that you don't take her class. Attendance is mandatory (and boring), as nothing is posted on blackboard, and there is also a participation mark.
Worst prof I have had while being a student at macewan. The class is pretty much aboriginal studies. There are so many better english profs out there. Classes were so boring
Attendance is mandatory. If you skip her class she guilts you for missing the class. Classes are pointless and only focus on Aboriginal material nothing else. Picky with assignments and unwilling to help students/meet during office hours etc. Please avoid this class at all costs if you can.
RUN! Get away from her as fast as you can!
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF, hardest grader I've ever come across! She will dock marks about the smallest details! Higher levels of profs weren't as bad as she is for 102!
Not helpful at all, you can't ask any questions without her looking at you like you're dumb, and expects you to know everything she knows. do not take this class.
I made the worse mistake by taking her class because she is not teaching English she is teaching a Aboriginal class. no point in taking it. She is takes years to hand our stuff back. isn't really helpful with questions. WORST PROF EVER + AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST + SAVE YOUR MONEY HOMIE!!!! IF I COULD GIVE A ZERO I WOULD.
I loved this class! a breath of fresh air to read Indigenous content. If you want to read and learn stories from another perspective, take her class. Thumbs up, 5 stars!!!
Look for another professor if you want a decent mark. She marks participation with attendance sheets and pop quizzes worth 10% of your mark... it doesnt matter if you participate by talking in class that does not get you marks so what is the point. She will not give you the marks you deserve for an assignment because "she laid the assignment out".
This was essentially an Indigenous studies course, not an English class. There was a basic grammar quiz at the end of the semester but that was it. She also pulled a stunt where she didnt assign reading to be due until after reading week, but she gave out a pop quiz on it the day before reading week and was shocked that no one was prepared for it.
Basically a history lesson on Aboriginal people, never once learned anything about english. Never tells you what she expects you to read for next class and gives pop quizes on the readings. Kind of an easy marker though, but cite literally everything.
Colleen Irwin... smh do not join any of her classes, this lady is so unorganized and is NOT clear on what is required for the assignments. She spends the first 10 minutes of class trying to figure out her computer to put up the slide. Its really pointless to go to class other then the fact that she takes ATTENDANCE! How does she still have ajob idk
Colleen was meh. I took her for engl102 and she was probably the most dry person to get a lecture from. She took a hot minute to grade assignments plus almost every class had a quiz on the reading and if you didnt read every little detail, there is no way youre getting above a 60. She was a pretty easy marker though, just follow MLA or die.
She is a great prof who is passionate about teaching. Literature analysis is not my strong suit but she turned it into a positive experience. She spends time explaining the literary movements in which the texts came from so you won't be left struggling to write your essays. She encourages you to think outside the box and use different perspectives.
It wasn't a particularly exciting class but it was still educational.
Colleen is very passionate about the material she is teaching although her lectures are SO boring yet mandatory. She takes forever to mark assignments and isn't clear on what she wants done. Make sure you come to class prepared or she will call you out! Don't ask questions because she doesn't want to help. Avoid this class at all costs!!
I found Colleen very helpful with papers - just get some sources together early enough and take them to her for her opinion. Don't be scared to get her to take a look at your paper before it's due as well. The writing center is a huge help with this class because Colleen is pretty stringent on grammar and punctuation in papers.
She does not give clear guidelines or feedback on assignments. When you ask for further feedback it is useless. She is clearly passionate about literature but is not helpful at all. She also docks marks for things that weren't on the criteria for the paper. She also decided to clarify something for the final after majority of students completed it
The only class I had withdrawn from at Macewan bc prof was so bad
She is a nice person but a bad teacher, would not recommend her. I never learned anything in her lectures as they were not related to the assignments whatsoever. By the end of the term, no one showed up to class.
Avoid at all costs. Her exams (specifically the final) are ridiculous and are based off every single piece of reading you did during the entire term. Grading is extremely harsh with seemingly no way to improve unless you come into the class a gifted child.
10/10 don't recommend. Lectures are not relevant to the assignments and do not explain assignments. When you email and ask for clarification on things (as she does not put clear instructions on blackboard) she won't respond very quickly if at all. Don't bother buying the textbook, you can find all the stories online for free.
The most unorganized prof. don't bother showing up for any in-person classes (if you have hybrid classes) they are irrelevant to the course and she coughs up a lung every class. This prof didn't mark any of our assignments till the term was over and is the hardest most unreasonable marker. She never responds to emails. Avoid this class at all costs
If you really want to grow in your English skills, Colleen will do that for you. She comes across tough as nails, but respectful communication goes a long way. Lots of reading, a bit of a tough marker but that's because she wants to push her students to fuller potential. I found her responsive and, in the end, navigated my way to a hard-won A+.
Colleen was not a good prof. She is allergic to the carpet glue used in the classes so get ready to listen to her hack for 20 minutes every class. She does not know how to post on bb as well. The assigned readings are really long and she will actually tell you that it will take a full evening; and they do.
Avoid. Took a class of hers last years, decided to drop. Thought i'd give another chance at a different course, biggest mistake. For exams and papers you're expected to know every detail, yet nothing of substance is covered in class. The marking is ridiculous based on the amount of info you're expected to know. Wait and take with a different prof.
Colleen was not reachable by email, her lectures consisted of her own personal opinions on the texts rather than fact, and the assignments had zero guidance. She also only returned assignments from September before the final and still hasnt returned our final papers. Do yourself a favour and skip this class while you still have your sanity and GPA
Not a great prof. Papers and exams are not explained, every assignment is effectively guesswork. Good luck reaching her outside class, as she is always overloaded with ENGL courses so won't respond. Doesn't post on Blackboard, and won't hand your papers or midterm back before the final.
She takes forever to mark anything. Went into the final with only a few grades back. After the final exam she provided the rest of the grades. Doesnt give a clear rubric for marking. Lectures are dry and hard to follow. She is also rude to students. She told us before the midterm you need to grow up and pretend like you care avoid this class.
She taught this course as a First Nations and African American studies rather than a first-year English course. The instructions for the assignments were not clear and due dates kept changing. Tough grader and provided little to no corrections.
The syllabus was incomplete and gave almost no information about the class (no explanation of assignments or exams). She posts almost nothing on Blackboard. Her lectures are very dry and all over the place. She regularly runs past the end of the lecture to make up for the fact that she's often late. Would have dropped if there were other sections.
Her lectures about Indigenous issues/history were very good, but completely unrelated to any assignments. We don’t talk about the readings in class but have to write about them for tests. Assignments were extremely vague and we didn’t even get instructions for 1 essay. Her feedback is non-sensical and she has a really hard time with technology.
If you care about your GPA and sanity, do not take ENG-102 with Colleen. Every date on our course outline changed, assignments were never clear, and it would take her weeks to reply to my emails. On top of this, she was a tough marker. She would dock 20% off of my papers, and she had difficulty explaining my mistakes. Worst prof at Macewan so far.
The final exam encompasses all 23 texts covered throughout the entire term. She cannot explain concepts well, and she is very rude
She did not give clear instructions about the assignments she assigned and ignored me when I based about them. Her midterm required us to write 2-3 page essay responses for 4 questions in only 50 minutes, while the lecture time is 1 hour and 30 mins; instead of giving us time or reducing the page amount, she decided to continue her lecture.
The professor speaks to her students as if they are beneath her. She has unclear expectations for the exams and the papers. Avoid this professor at every cost.
She was unclear on a numerous amount of assignments, and when one student asked her about an assignment and told her that she had been unclear, she called the student snarky. She has no respect for students and openly admits that we cause her so much stress that we have made her physically sick with a cough(caught her smoking too)good try colleen.
horrible. talks so much but never really says anything. lectures put me to sleep. never gives any guidelines or rubrics for assignments. class might as well be an indigenous history course, which is nice and all, but i came here for english. she never talks about any of the assignments in class.
If English isn't your strong suit, I would highly recommend not taking this class. She will spend most days going over topics in books rather than course material. Chance for her to not show up to class at all, without a heads up before hand, or explanation why afterwards Avoid if you value your GPA and sanity.
Dont take this class if you care about your GPA. I finished LA (AP) with a 96%. I have not gotten over 60% on any assignment in this class. Colleen is so unclear on assignments its literally a guessing game. lectures aren't even on what we learn in the course rather then she goes on for hours about her own personal opinion about Native Americans.
Avoid if at all possible. I signed up for her English 102 class and attended the first lecture. All her chosen texts for the course focused around race and discrimination. I had nothing against that and it was fine, but as soon as she said that if we wrote to support her view we'd get an A , I dropped immediately.
Although technology was not her best suit, she was a wonderful professor. If you attend her lectures frequently you will do good in her class. Not a very hard marker, and is passionate about what she teaches. If you are racist she is definitely not the professor for you as she discusses racism and racial related issues.
Late to nearly all classes. will not show up to some classes without heads up. Stated that she does not like writing emails and from experience will take from days to weeks to even look at your email. Is not tech-savvy whatsoever, struggles with her class page, and hardly even teaches the actual topic. Also is a chronic smoker. Avoid this teacher.
We weren't updated on required readings, yet expected to figure it out on our own after many cancelled classes. Marks were not given back before due dates for next assignments so we had no knowledge on how to improve and where we lost marks. Assignment guidelines were unclear, feedback was unhelpful. Grades were not updated all semester. Waste of $
I suggest u take her class if u are JUST looking to learn ab African and aboriginal history. LITERALLY teaches nOTHing about eng.If u are sensitive to smoke smells be cautious bc she does smell like smoke most of the time, no hate tho.. and no feedback on papers either lol. Just read the MLA book urself at home if u wanna actually learn stuff tho.
if your sensitive to smoke smells i suggest taking another prof as she does smell. Grades weren't updated all semester so you had no way of knowing how to improve for the next. Lecture material didn't really come in handy for exams. Exam structure isn't suited well to a 50 minute class. Overall i wouldn't take a class with her again
she speaks so soft and unclear and rambles all the time. this classs is not the move
im in the middle of my term with prof Irwin and i didn't check reviews.. she doesnt reply to emails, looses track of the course schedule, doesnt show up to class and gives no heads up or apology, doesnt tell you how much to read for any readings, and she has yet to mark assignments from the first week. dont take her!!!!!!!!
Inconsistent classes - will cancel with no prior notice. Can barely hear or understand her rambling - none of the lectures are about English - Only about Aboriginal issues. It feels more of a Aboriginal studies class than english. Will not mark assignments until the end of the term- grades do not get updated. Do not reccommend.
Worst professor so far. Not an English course by any means. Personally there's nothing wrong with indigenous and black lives matter studies but I came here to do English course and not history.
She was overall a very poor professor, it is clear what she has an interest in and that is not English. I would stay away from her if you want to further your education. Also, if you miss a class she will dock your grade.
Has one of the worst teaching styles I've ever seen. We took notes in the first week or two of class and after that it was just a focus on Indigenous and Black studies. Gives almost no feedback and is very strict when it comes to marking (use Grammarly!) She literally does not reply to emails and has surprise personal responses that r In class only
Pretty fair marker, but her lectures are quite boring and unrelated to English.
Was not an English teacher. Would have been better off as a social teacher. Very little review that wasn't helpful. Very slow marker. Finished an assignment on October 21 and the term is basically finished and still isn't marked. Like come on. All she does is yap. Phd in Yapology. Dr yapper. If u have her be ready for her to cough the whole time.
I had her for comp 103 and ended up dropping the class because it was so awful. Lectures were boring and hard to follow. her lectures were all over the place, and sometimes unrelated. she would make us do a group project then never mention it again. would not recommend and she smelt like cigarettes ever class, it was gross to breathe in for 50 mins
The entire course was filled with readings that were not relevant to anything that was supposed to be taught, she regularly gets distracted and does not really teach anything. Assignments were fairly simple but having to sit through her lectures is the most difficult part. There were times where she would not show up at all, with no notice.
Irwin often would go of track in lectures and would talk about her personal life. The readings have no variety and do not relate to English 102 at all. Irwin takes extremely long to give grades back and gives little to no feedback on assignments and papers. Attendance is taken each class. I would avoid her class if you want to keep your sanity.
Colleen was not an English professor, rather an passionate activist. There was no feedback or rubrics provided for assignments, and class discussions/topics were unclear/unrelated. Contacting her via email was impossible and getting grades back took so long, it violated MacEwan's grading policies. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Colleen was the worst prof I had in my university experience. It took forever to mark anything, even so, that final marks were not given out until way after the drop deadlines, so you didn't even know if you had passed or not prior to going into finals so you could withdraw.
Dr. Irwin is an absolute gem. She has much to offer students, and deeply cares about their success. Thank you!!
I hope you do not miss out on the chance to learn from Dr. Irwin's wealth tank of knowledge and experience that permeates through her lectures. She teaches at a reasonable pace, and has so much that she graciously imparts to her students for their success! Absolutely recommend taking her class(es)!!!!
Don't miss the opportunity to take this course with a wonderful and caring professor!!
Use the gift of freethinking and make your mind up for yourself. I don't understand the motive of the critics on this feedback platform. Dr. Irwin is an incredible professor who has a vast amount of knowledge and insight to offer her students. I am excited to glean from her years of experience, and hope you don't miss the opportunity for the same!
Dr. Irwin teaches at a comfortable pace, and has structured this course for student success! Awesome class, and lecturer!
Dr. Colleen Irwin is a gift to MacEwan!!
Love her methodic approach to explaining stories.
Good notes made on whiteboard while teaching. Explains things very well, and is kind towards students.
Very knowledgeable with Comparative Literature pieces, and practical assignments.
She has so much information in her slides. The class is informative and entertaining because if you listen to her, she uses language to tell good stories about literature and the different changing eras connecting things back to the course materials.
Very informative professor, who cares about student success. Assignments are practical and build on each other, and are designed to introduce students to academic reading and analysis.
Dr. Irwin is a very practical professor who explains things well, and is willing to work with students at their skill and knowledge level. Extremely accommodating, and available for extensive office hours. Very interesting lady to glean from. Possesses a wealth of knowledge, without coming across as arrogant.
Dr. Irwin is a very sweet professor, who has put so much into her lectures and assignments. If you want to learn from someone who has spent so much of their life studying the materials covered in this class, you will not regret it! Cannot say enough good things about her.
Rich teachings that incorporate history, comparative literature, with complementary Indigenous studies into a well planned, thought provoking, and engaging curriculum.
Excellent professor and very knowledgeable in the subject matter!!
Flexible and accommodating. Dr. Irwin is a very understanding professor, who cares deeply for her students. It is a privilege to have been her student!
Colleen is lovely. Anyone who thinks otherwise, doesn't deserve to learn from her vast years of experience and high academic achievements!
Colleen is truly an inspiration. Show some respect, and you have much to learn from the most caring professor I have encountered in all my years at MacEwan. She is an absolute gem!
Dr. Irwin is respectful of her students, and extends herself in ways that are remarkable! She has a wonderful delivery in the classroom, and goes with the flow even when technology is not cooperating. Taking things in stride, and delivering as much as she can, while imparting from all the years of academia that she has amazingly accomplished.
Inspirational stories, and experience. Anyone who thinks otherwise does not deserve a seat in any one of her classes! Dr. Irwin is an absolute gem! MacEwan is blessed to have her as a PhD professor.
Dr. Irwin carefully selects the reading, and actively engages with students in the classroom. She is delightful!
Worst prof. Do not take. In 3 years I haven't experienced such a low quality course. I dropped after the first day and thankfully I did. Reviews were horrible and the latest ones have to be fake for sure. She reeks of cigarette and won't stop coughing. I could barely here her. She was incapable of working a computer.
I think that Colleen is genuinely a caring and pro-student professor! She is extremely passionate about the readings and conveys that when she lectures. Please give her grace as technology is just not her friend!
Dr. Irwin challenges her students, but is also very fair with her expectations of a 100-level course. Her wealth of knowledge precipitates out of her lectures, and there is much to be gained by attending her classes!
Someone's habits do not determine quality of a course. Just saying!! Judgement befalls those who quickly pass judgement. Colleen cares about her students, and for someone her age with the experiences she has had, is underrated. The quality of course delivery is reflective of her years of studies, that are exemplified by her PhD achievement!
Professor Irwin is an engaging instructor who makes the material fun and accessible. The assignments build skills incrementally, and attending class is key. Utilize resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook to excel in this class.
I took her class in the very 1st fall term when joined and her lectures are a bit new to understand the course readings. gives grammar quizzes for revision + 3 individual assignments and very engaging class
Horrible prof seriously never take this class avoid at all cost idk if these are bots writing the good reviews but she is actually the worst teacher I have ever had in my life took this class my first year for engl 102 and literally failed i swear she doesn't even know what she's talking about probably best to get retire at this point.
Save yourself from taking this class. She is not a good professor at all. Do not take classes with her. Save yourself. Listen to these reviews and take it with someone else.
I love Dr Irwin! She is so inspiring and I made tons of friends in her class! I loved how she taught and what we learned. I always felt so respected and cared for in her class and I would look forward to her class on tough days. Dr. Irwin always offered me extensions and extra help when needed. However she struggles with responding to emails.
Passionate. Pushes you to do better. *If you want a higher mark on essays, I would suggest visiting her during office hours and asking for help. **Introduce yourself to her. ***As long as you ask, I guarantee you she will grant you an extension. **Buy the physical copy. It will save you the headache, and you can also use it for other classes.
I would not recommend this class. It was very very veryyyy boring and if I'm being honest…I did not learn anything. Felt like a waste of my time.
Basically an indigenous studies class. I don't think I was taught a single thing about the English language in any of the lectures. If you like activism then her class is definitely for you. If you want a straightforward English class that's actually about English, don't take it with colleen. Hardest marker I had that semester as well.
felt like showing up for the 10% was to just listen to her ramble about random topics the whole semester. We learned nothing about the English language and her feedback was very short for taking two months to get the grades back. overall I would stay away but I can see it being an interesting class if you interested in activism and such
felt like a social sciences class, did not give much input/lessons about how to write. She is very interested and devoted to the topics she chooses but they are very heavy, and harder to write about. If you are handing in a paper, run it by her and you'll do well. Lots of tech issues though, and takes a very very very very long time to mark papers
AVOID THIS PROF!!! I cannot state this loud enough you need to avoid her at all costs. I did not finish out the semester with her comp 102 class because she was removed as our prof after the massive amounts of complaints they got about her. This isn't about people not doing the reading or not trying she is a bad prof and should probably just retire
The writing center gives more information than her a 100% of the time. Come for class, but if you don't you can go to the writing center. They'll help a lot more.
She did not complete the semester after she was removed as our professor due to numerous complaints. She gave next to no instruction on assignment expectations and barely taught a thing. She showed up late, left early, reeked of cigarettes, and coughed/mumbled through every lecture. She also does NOT respond to emails so don't waste your time.
I don't know why her rating is low, I took ENGL102 and 103 with her, and she was one of the best. She's caring, even accepts late assignments without penalty, and my friends also did well after I recommended her. Her classes can be boring, but you get 10% easy marks just for attending, so it's worth it. I'd definitely take her again.
