I love her, great class notes. TAs aren't the best, but what can you do. Oh, and don't talk during her class--she HATES it! She will stare you down until you shut up. Just go to lecture every day and PAY ATTENTION and do the online quizzes.
Go to lecture, definitely. Questions are answered a little curtly. Exams weren't too bad. Lecture notes help, but if don't review them before a test, then good luck--sometimes feel you are on your own She does slow down if things are unclear.
I hate her. I knew that material, yet bombed her bloody tests. Schuuuuuuuuuuuuuuultz.
Exam points are strangely distributed; some questions seem trivial. TA's are questionable - shouldn't the TA's teach the students, not vice versa? Mallard quizzes can sometimes seem impossible - doesn't really follow the "recommended text"
Could care less about you and whether you learn or not. Unfortunately there's little choice in who to take this class with. TA's seem incompetent.
Seems to take pleasure in seeing students fail. Test questions are designed to be missed.
I don't really like Econ, but she makes it fun and entertaining. //'tying rope around neck'// The exams are very easy. //'climbing up on chair'// I love her and could be more pleased with the way she teaches. //'tying rope to fan'// Props to her. //'kicked the chair out'// Aaaghhh.
Worst prof. in the entire world. Not very friendly, tests don't test what you know. They are designed to fail you. Have fun w/ this class.
whats with this woman? i get an A on the first test and all of a sudden i feel like a chicken with my head cutoff, i know the material but tests are crap, and she's a total **** outside of class.
Prof. Schultz is a tough professor. She speaks very un-clearly in class and definitely doesnt explain things too well. You pretty much teach yourself the material, so going to class is pretty important, esp. for pop quizzes! Tests are difficult so study your butt off!
Prof. Schulz isn't at all friendly. Plus, she can't explain things in simple English. You have to really know your stuff before the exams. Simply taking the practice quizzes won't cut it. You need to know how to handle all the problems, while also watching out for tricks and twists on the exams.
Class looked easy at the beginning. Then the first test came, and it was crap. You have to study and know what you are doing for this class. There is a good curve, but if you don't know the material backwards and forwards, you're screwed.
Very hard teacher, TAs are just plain bad. Tests are designed to kill your grade. There's always a trick on a test that was never presented in class or in any other way, so you're totally on your own.
SCHULTZIEEE.O I thought the class was REALLY easy, but the tests are TRICKY. She's arrogant, like knowing basic statistics makes her the "God of the Class." TheTAwas good, and she's won awards, butIfelt like it was a trip back to the bad highschool teacher that felt like she knew it all,but shedidn't.
Unfortunately this class is required..if its not..dont take it! The exams are much harder than the lecture material so theres not much you can do. TAs are sometimes hard to understand so basically you are on your own.
I am the walrus...coo coo cachoooooooo! This class isnt that hard, but the tests are complete bull**** compared to the homework
In all my time being a student, I have not experienced a more arrogant, useless, and evil instructor as I did when I was in Colleen Schultz/Houlihan's class. It is a shame people like her are given a salary to teach. I want a refund.
the tests in this class are tricky as hell. you can make up for your grade with the homework somewhat. there was a big curve in the class too. the one problem is that colleen schultz is extremely hot and may distract both male and femalte students with her excquisite beauty
The material is easy, her tests are not. The trickiest tests I've ever taken, the class set-up is awful.
i'd taken statistics before, and expected to breeze through this class. unfortunately this woman made things very difficult. she purposely tricks you on her tests and doesn't give you a clear idea of what's going to be on them. the icing on the cake is her beautiful singsong voice, which makes lecture soooo wonderful.
Very hard, makes tests a lot harder than the material needs to be compared to what she taught in lectures. TA's don't help much either. Overall poor class.
She told me there was gonna be around 30 questions on the final...there ended up being 67 questions. She never went over any of the crap on the test either...:(
Not recommended for your own good ...
this is a super easy class. its all formulas and study her notes and u will get an A. take her
202 focuses mostly on memorization of formulas and random definitions. I expected to be able to actually understand stats, but she introduces things without any comment on meaning. Tests are putative and don't cover the material fairly. No textbook exists that teaches it "her" way so you have to rely on the awful notes and braindead TAs.
Terrible teacher. Overall she was not very helpful with regard to learning the material and tests are very hard.
Seems nice in class but once test time comes, your opinion of her will change. TAs are either not proficient in English or not helpful and therefore useless in either case. There is no reference-based textbook for this class, so if you find yourself in a state of confusion, don't expect to be able to simply look it up later.
worst teacher ever. she wants you to do poorly and her test reflect this. She was the first teacher I've ever had that actually curved grades so that they would hurt you. The most worthless woman in the world.
Fantastic teacher! Highly recommended
Very easy class... lecture helps, but come test time it is all about execution.
I don't know what you all are talking about.. this is the easiest class I've taken at UofI. The only thing that would make this class remotely difficult is memorization of the formulas, but she gives you a formula sheet for each test with everything you need. Tests are very straightforward.
Nice lady, horrible exam.
Very thorough in class and explains things very well. Tests are little tough and you really need to understand the concepts to do well on them. I am anticipating an A in the class but I like Econ.
That wasn't easy. That's for sure. If you take this class, GO TO lectures!!! Work hard and you'll do better than me.If you don't need this class don't take it as Gen ed or somth. It's tough.
This is a STAT course, with little relevance to Economics in general. A few impossible questions on every exam. I felt like we were expected to know things after little or no demonstration. Schultz is really not a pleasant person to look at or listen to. I put forth a decent amount of effort. B for the class, but a 59 on the final...
Easy material. She's clear about laying down what's expected of students on tests and what not. The online homework is ANNOYING! The class is on a curve.
If you go to class and do the (often frustrating) homework carefully this class really isn't that bad. The tests are tricky, but the course is curved very generously.
The homework is annoying and time consuming but overall this is the easiest class I have taken on campus/in the college of business. Does not require much time committment and the tests are very straight forward. She gives you a sheet with all the equations to use on exams.
You definately need to attend lecture and discussion to keep up. As long as you put in effort and keep up with the homework you shouldn't have any trouble. Homework is VERY ANNOYING but in the end helps with drilling some of the concepts into your head. Overall I enjoyed this class, and recommend it.
Schultz left mid semester to have her baby without telling us (and we didn't even know she was pregnant). That was nice of her. The class wasn't that bad. I didn't find homework difficult, but the exams were really hard and didn't reflect the material always. There was minimal out of class work.
I've gotten through Calc I & II but this class was ridiculous. The exams are extremely hard & its not like a normal math class where u got a book to do practice problems; its just ur binder from class. You get SOME online homework before quizes, but you have no way to know what you did wrong and correct it. Horribly organized class.
Not an organized class. The online quizzes are difficult b/c they are not multiple choice, you don't know what the real answers are, and questions are different each time. The tests are more difficult than they should be and she will put stuff on the test that she never went through in class. She doesn't even teach, anybody could instruct that class
Grades in this class are mostly determineed by the exams; Half of your grades on the exams are determined by what you know in statistics, and the other half is determined by your ability to outsmart Colleen's test architecture, which heavily punishes anyone who second-guesses themselves. Take ECON 202 elsewhere because UIUC's offering is very poor.
They really need to restructure this class. It is like a cattle call. Hope you have a good TA because Schultz won't teach you anything. She is an an absolutely horrible teacher.
class is very easy, people that wrote underneath myself are just very incompetent and dont know what they are talking about, class is structured, hw is made difficult so you understand the material, repetition is key, more times you do something, better you get at it, take this class and do the hw dont listen to people who gave her bad ratings
If you complete the course packet in class and do the homework, then you should get an A (I got an A). DO NOT BLOW OFF STUDYING FOR THE FIRST 2 EXAMS. Put in 45 minutes to study for them cause they will keep your grade high since the 3rd exam is very difficult and the final is fairly difficult.
Actually, I did real well in the class and still feel like it was a dysfunctionally organized class from top to bottom. It was so bad that I remember she gave questions on tests she never went through in lecture or discussion or through announcements. SHE IS OUT TO TRICK YOU. Repetition is the key and practicing the online quizzes doesn't help.
Honestly, despite the general consensus here, this class is EASY. What is more likely: that Schultz is a mean-spirited, incompetent demon trying to "trick" everyone, or that a vocal minority of students were over-confident in their skills prior to tests, and then realized that they either were not smart enough or did not study enough to get an A...
easy to understand, class is not difficult, follow along and go to class and it will be easy
She should be teaching Let-Everyone-Go-Early 101 instead, since that's apparently what she specializes in. Seriously - I can't think of a day when we didn't get out at least 15 minutes early. Oh, and if you struggle in this class - all I have to say is: good luck in ECON203, which is a total LOL-fest.

She has abundant teachjing experience in Econ 202, which makes students understand things easy. In fact, materials you will cover are VERY easy. Attendance is strongly recommended. You need a TA for homework assignment. Exams are also easy, IF you study. People complaining her are either who love procrastination or just stupid.
Professor Schultz keeps things short and to the point. She tells you exactly what you need to know for the test, nothing more nothing less. We often get out early because she likes to keep the classes on the same pace and ours moves much faster for whatever reason. I would recommend her because she shows you exactly what you need to know.
I had low expectations but have been pleasantly surprised how very effective a teacher she is.Extremely competent and forthright about the tests.Unlike Gotheil, she also did not force students to waste 150 bucks on self-written books. In fact none was required; we learned everything in class. The class was not the easiest but not rigorous either.
Honestly, I enjoyed her class probably one of the best profs I've had at this university, she knows her stuff. Yeah we're let out early 75% of the time but that's bc there's no reason to keep us longer. Exams are legit-based on hw & everything in notebook used in lecture. Go to class, or u won't understand the material! willing to help u if asked.
You get a sense that she is a good orator.Class is not too bad but exams can be challenging and you will never know how you you fare in the final. A radom grade that may or may not correspond with your earlier test scores is assigned in the end.Though if you have taken Gotheil, you will know that he does the same as well. Take STAT 100 if you can.
She is very good at explaining the topic she teaches. Its a really easy class, but the tests are unfair. They are pretty easy and relate to the homework/material but are only 20 questions multiple choice. Its too hard to get an A on a short MC stats exam. There is too much room for error and she of course puts the tricks on the exams.
Possibly one of the worst professors the University offers. Has a email policy set up to her advantage, if you don't send her an email the right way she doesn't have to answer back. This ultimately allows her infallibility if she forgets to respond to your email, she can claim you didn't write it the correct way. Terrible exams, No Compass grades.
Her lectures are good. Homework is pretty easy. Discussion is pointless to go to except to turn in homework. The class may start out seeming VERY easy, but the test are NOT. She can be very tricky on them & it's confusing. All the tests excluding the 2nd are somewhat hard. The 2nd midterm is VERY easy, but if you study hard, you'll be good.
Lectures and content of the class are very straightforward. Exams are bull. Seem easy but your grade depends on 19-20MC questions where there's much room for error esp using the one line calculators to calculate really long numbers, check and triple check your answers
One thing I noticed about her is that she has no office hours. The TAs are usually not competent enough to answer your questions.
i dont get how people say shes hard and useless. the class is VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD. all you do in class is do problems, which are the same as the exam. she also answered questions clearly. Lecture is not mandatory but useful and she usually let us out after 20 mins. if u didnt like this class your going to hate 203 and 302
Class material is simple if you attend lectures. But because of this the test material can be out to trick you at times. Colleen doesn't respond to emails, and doesn't care about students individually. She is also unavalible for office hours so if you don't understand something go to the TAs. You can still get an easy A or B despite her uselessness
She is a very good lecturer and explains the material well if anyone has questions. The homework can sometimes be stressful because it requires precise answers due to mallards format. As for her exams, they are 20 question MC so it is difficult to get an A, however if you study and attend class this should breeze by as an easy B at least
Colleen is pretty good at teaching, very clear and concise with her explanations. Concise enough to get out of class early 90% time. She is kind of lazy though...
The class is straight forward so if you take the time outside of class to look over the material and get help from the TAs then you will be fine. She does her job of teaching the material and explaining it, along with answering any questions students might have.
A community college level professor teaching for a Big Ten University. This rushed course teaches on the same level as it confuses. The prof knows very little how to teach when away from her pre-made slides (wonder who made them for her)? Add that the TA's sometimes teach opposite what is taught in lecture. The whole course is economic diarrhea.
Her teaching style is easy to follow, as all of her notes are given from her powerpoint lectures. Her tests are only 20 questions and some times tricky, making it difficult to get an A. Overall she is not a pleasant person, but if you attend lectures and do the homework it's not terrible.
Colleen has an attitude and is not a very nice person. Her teaching style is lazy and careless. The course is set up so if you make tiny mistakes you will get significant points off. econ 202 caused me a lot of stress but i somehow got an A. not looking forward to econ 203...although she doesnt teach it. thank god
Schultz just stands up on stage and reads off the power point slides. You basically have to teach yourself everything and the exams can be pretty tricky. It is a shame that there isn't another option for this course. My only B in college.
Terrible. The material is straight forward and easy to learn on your own, she is useless. Her exams are ridiculous, and not like the homework or examples you work in class.
My TA was inept, but Prof Schultz did her job well. Overall this class was relatively straightforward. You get formula sheets, so every test is essentially open book and you have ample time for the 20 mc questions.
This class isn't all that bad. The material is very straight forward. Just make sure to always double check your work on the tests. The homeworks help you prepare for the exams.
Great teacher. Go to class. Discussion was helpful sometimes. In discussion we either went over new material or it was a clarity/review type session. Do the hmwrk bc it helps a LOT. If you do the hmwrk n understand it, u should do well on the tests
My experience in her class has easily been the worst of any class I have taken at U of I. Her lectures leave you ill prepared for the exams and the TAs are completely incompetent. When I emailed her asking to meet with her, I ended up sending her four separate messages over 4 weeks before giving up and tracking her down after lecture. Unbelievable.
Schultz is a completely awful professor. Do not take this class unless you really have to. I emailed her to ask about a test I took and it took four emails and two emails to the Econ department head before she replied. Additionally, it was incredibly snippy and condescending. Decent teacher; awful person.
Schultz's course isn't a walk in the park, but it isn't extremely difficult either. Great preparation for 203 with Petry. It's a statistics course so exams and problems are going to be inevitably tricky. If you take 203 and dislike it, then business or economics isn't for you. Good preparation to think quantitatively and critically.
For material that is not difficult and rather straightforward, she always finds a way to throw curveballs on exams that you are not prepared for at all. All multiple choice tests with answers within .0001 from each other. Exams are not indicative of whether you know the material. By far my least favorite class on campus so far.
Tests are not reflective of what you know in the class. TA's are completely useless and can ruin your grade by giving you misinformation. By far one of my least favorite classes and I love economics. Be sure to do well on the first test because it is the only one that is relatively straightforward. The rest will not relate to what you learned.
Literally one of the easiest classes at this school. If you do not do well on the tests then that is your fault. You get a cheat sheet for every test and this class is all about knowing how to use the formulas given to you on the cheat sheet. Although she might not be the best professor, this class is easy.
She at times seems uninterested, there are many tricks put on the test so make sure to review things from past exams because that always has a large enough impact on the following tests, the tests are not curved but the class is, if you put in the work to understand the material, you should do well.
She has a very weird calculator policy, you can only use the 1$ basic calculator. She uses numbers with 6 decimals in her problems to her delight) and you have to do all the calculations with that calculator so if you hit a wrong button by mistake, you have to start all over. I hated every second of her class: useless, boring and uninteresting.
The class is a complete joke, but she is literally the WORST professor I've had on campus. She will definitely try to trick you on exams so be super careful when reading each question.
This professor is extremely tricky!!! I've been to the TA office hours and even the TAs can't solve her questions sometimes.
Relatively straightforward and helpful. I had a few questions and she was good about responding in a timely manner. My TA was also very helpful. She has clear and reasonable expectations, should not be too difficult if you are willing to put in the effort.
Her class is challenging, no doubt about it. Go to class everyday, pay attention and take good notes. Her exams can be hard, but if you study beforehand, you won't have a problem.
Seems like a bitter person. Also, she kept saying the hw is due wednesday but not the time. Turns out its due wednesday morning at 5 am hahahaha. I had not paid for the program yet as i registered for the course late. TA says she repeated the time many times which she did NOT.No lowest score drop policy so she is basically out to make life hell.
just not a fun person at all. no technology allowed in class, no laptops no phones out, can't use camera phone to take picture of a PP slide.
Agree with below. This is an easy A class if you pay attention to in-class problems and do your hw. The in-class problems and practice tests resemble the actual tests, so just learn them well and you'll do great. On one of our midterms, 30% got perfect scores. Yes, seriously.
Some questions in the exams are tricky. But generally the class is easy. The professor is kind of lazy.
Exams may be tricky, but they aren't terrible as long as you attend lectures and do all the homework. You should make sure you understand all the homework problems and the trickiest problems because they will always appear on exams. Easy A or B. Anything less is because you didn't understand all the concepts taught or in the homework.
While the material itself is really easy, Schultz makes the exams as tricky as possible. Class is pretty boring, but can be helpful. The final was optional which was nice. Overall, it is very easy to get a B, but don't expect an A without a lot of studying, despite the easiness of the material.
I hate this professor.. She was awful and her tests were the trickiest test I've ever seen. Horribly boring lectures. She is extremely sarcastic when you go to her for help. Avoid her at all costs. She is terrible
The class itself was average as far as difficulty. The best way to learn the material is by going to lecture. The tests can be a bit tricky. I don't know if this is typical or if I just got lucky but at the end of the semester she pretty much threw points out for free to the whole class. Overall she's alright.
Although she can be crabby and boring she is amazing at explaining things clearly. Go to class, pay attention, and you'll get a good grade. Her grading policy is very student friendly and fair.
Quite horrible professor. You need to be in class as much of the material is out of order or not presented in the book in the same manner that is presented in class. She also uses the iClicker system for points every class period. She will try to play tricks on exams, and doesn't allow audio recording. Doesn't post answers to PP slides if you miss.
Colleen is the worst professor I've had at U of I. She tries to trick you with her exams and makes statistics much more difficult than it has to be. I learned more by myself than from her. It's a shame that this course is required for business majors.
Worst professor I had so far at UIUC. Tricky exam questions and unhelpful TA sections. The final is not fair, and the questions are not hard, but very confusing. Whatever, you can not avoid her since only she teaches econ202 for years. Bear with it!
Colleen does a poor job on accurately testing students for the subject matter learned in class. She generally carries herself with a poor attitude in class, and seems to be irritated when students ask questions. She does not appear to be passionate about teaching.
TAKE STAT 100 INSTEAD!!!!!! do not take econ 202 with her, shes a good enough teacher but her class is 90% tests and the tests are hard. Stat 100 covers the same credit and its 10x easier. Schultz is actually a good teacher but she makes her class impossible to get a good grade in, save yourself the time and effort and dont take it.
Schultz is a good teacher. Make sure you go to class and do the aplia assignments. The tests are easy, but the final is more difficult. The curve at the end is very high. I got an 87 and that ended up being an A.
Where do I even start? iClickers everyday sucked ass especially at 8AM. She is very lazy and makes no effort to help her students directly. She doesn't have office hours - NOOO that lowly task is for TA's according to her (I probably learned more from them than her). Even in emails she says go to office hours instead of actually helping
There are only four tests in the whole semester and she doesn't give you much opportunity to buffer your test scores. Lectures are not clear and she doesn't teach you everything that's on the test. She throws a lot of curve balls on the tests and she requires you to do your work out at the sixth decimal place which leaves large margin for error.
Colleen Schultz is easily the worst professor at the University of Illinois. It's a disgrace she's allowed to continue to teach. She doesn't explain anything, but magically expects you to know everything she never even mentioned to you on the test. Homework doesn't even help. Avoid her at all possible costs.
you get iclicker points for going to class but she isn't a very good teacher. you are really going to be on your own in this class so find a helpful group to study with. luckily the material isn't difficult at all
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD! I wish I had taken Stats100 instead of this class
This class has been the hardest class I've ever taken. It sucks because you are required to take it as a business major and she's the only professor. They intentionally make the midtermsexams very difficult so do not underestimate them!
Although the material is not too bad to learn, the exams (which make up 85% of your grade) are filled with tricks that are sure to fool anybody. No matter how well I knew the material, I still managed to fall for her tricks on each exam!
8 AM Quizzes
Many mistakes in homework and exams
Never have a teacher meaner than her
She teaches and explains everything well. However, it is very hard to get an A.
The material isn't impossible and stats can be interesting. Colleen made the exams consist of only challenging problems and did not focus on us understanding the material. Also, she throws in a lot of last minute curveballs (i.e. she changed our test from mult choice to free response on the day of the exam). Overall good lectures, tough exams.
I would avoid at all costs. The material isn't extremely tough, but she plays so many tricks on her exams that it's almost impossible to get an A, not unless you spend your entire life reading the chapters and continually practicing problems. This will be my first B I've ever gotten.
No matter how much you study the material, she will always try and trick you on the exams. There were times when my T.A. didn't know the answer to some of the exam questions. I thought that was very unreasonable. Overall, if you study enough, it should not be too hard to pull off a B.
Here's a few things to take away: 1) This class is really hard, so study and know everything 2) She makes her tests tricky, with "None of the Above" options, which is why the averages on tests are low 3) It is possible to get an A. I did, and I got a D on my first midterm She curved the class by about 6-7% at the end of the semester.
She explains well. Gives more than enough of iclicker and homework points. Tests are indeed tricky but you can get a decent grade as long as you don't make any careless or conceptual mistakes. Know your content well and you should be fine. Her ppt is enough for both exam preparation and learning.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER MET. It's like she is trying to trick her students in every possible way on purpose. First time homework due on 5AM? !No announcements and reminders at all about pop quizzes?! Tests have much more difficult content (even brand new stuff) than homeworks?! Take her Econ202class and you will understand "desperate". CNMB.
Colleen is not a friendly outgoing teacher, but she gets the material across and teachers her students. If you pay attention in class, you'll learn the material.
You need to go to class to pass and get participation credit. Shes always there for you if you ask for help. I think she teaches pretty well.
Her teaching is alright, she kind of rushes through everything. Her exams are a different level though. The material itself is moderate but it's as if she uses every sinew of her body to trick us. Also, she doesn't posts her powerpoints online and doesn't allow any use of electronics in her class. Welcome to the 21st century
This course is not that hard, and the professor is good. However, those TAs are really terrible. The practice exams before the final have lots of mistakes. Study by yourself is the best option.
Exams consist of ridiculously long calculations. Punch the wrong key on the calculator? Get the next five questions wrong! Lots of material was also tested of which we spent little on in class. Posted no resources/lectures slides online and prohibited pictures of her slides. She's clearly a professor who doesn't care about her students.
You just have to show up and pay attention in class. Colleen does a pretty good job of explaining everything in class. Midterms are super easy but the final was very hard.
The class starts off easy but then gets extremely difficult for no reason. The professor moves way too quickly in class and is really bad at explaining. I would not recommend taking this class if you don't have to. She curves but barely enough. Also clicker points counts as a quiz grade so class is basically mandatory.
The material in this class is pretty easy. All the problems on the tests are basically the same as what she does in-class. Not much more to it.
Awful professor!! Avoid her!
She teaches and explains pretty well in class so I would strongly recommend going. Her tests are mostly basic questions we cover in class with a few that we never even talk about. Her biggest problem is the calculator rule. We can only use super basic calculators which are super easy to make mistakes on and can really screw you up.
Puts trick questions on exams. Homework is far different than the exams. Grades harshly. Students are not allowed to have any electronic device in class for any reason other than the most basic calculator possible; this causes the vast amount of calculations required in the class to take an unnecessary amount of time.
Personality meh, but her teaching style is very clear and straightforward with plenty of example problems. The homework is easy too because you have 3 attempts. It tells you how to fix your mistakes & takes your highest attempts. Although it's time consuming, it's easy to get 100%. Memorization heavy course.
Despite the negative reviews, I found her to be a very clear lecturer and her exams to be fair and straightforward. The calculator rule is unpopular with students but is necessary because of the statistical functions on advanced calculators. Overall, it's a fairly difficult class that makes you work for an A, but if you go to lectures, you'll pass.
Makes you jump through hoops and has super specific specifications for a calculator. Also doesn't lecture in class, makes you learn the material on your own, as well as homework. Lecture pretty much functions as a discussion and some people like it, but I didn't sign up for an online class.
She has a ridiculous rule about calculators that handicaps students from using technology that is readily available to them in their everyday lives for absolutely no reason. She may argue it is to help students understand what they are doing, but that is a ridiculous argument because the calculator is only as smart as the person using it....
Finally a professor that I learn so well from! If you don't like learning on your own then you may have a tough time, but I love how lectures are studied on your own online. Makes it so much easier for me. Clear schedule, understandable topic progression, fair homework load and tests. Do your work and you will get an A! Best class at UIUC so far!
All material learned in this class is very outdated and inefficient. She doesn't let her students use anything more than a five dollar calculator let alone excel. Don't bother going to class you'll be better off using that time to study the online lectures and HW. This class needs a curriculum change. Good Luck typing in those tedious numbers.
Unnecessarily difficult. Take stat 100 instead if possible
One of the worst professors I had. This class is more so how to use a very basic calculator rather than actually learning economics. You'll find yourself finding the class pretty easy, but hard exams due to her strict rules.
I'm not kidding this is the worst professor at University of Illinois and I've seen them all. She makes you use calculators from the stone age to try and trip you up every step of the way. What would take 5 minutes takes an hour with these brutal calculators. The lecture videos seem simple and then when the practice test come around you're screwed.
Terrible Exams. I learned a lot in class but the exams are unnecessarily hard. It will leave you feeling dumb. She does not know how to make an exam that is representative of what she taught in class.
The WORST professor! 1. She is the laziest teacher. she doesn't have office hour and wouldn't return your Email. she makes classes shorter and cancel many classes! she doesn't explain much on lecture. 2. She makes the trickiest exams with the her calculator's rule and tons of steps, especially on final 3. No help, no teach, just video watch
Material is offered on a "you either get it, or you don't" basis, as in the professor gives the impression of being bothered when asked to explain something differently. Questions on quizzes/tests/etc. are frequently vague or don't match the difficulty of what is presented in the lectures. She is also the only professor to give this class.
I was able to understand the material, but the test were pretty hard. She is not the nicest as a person. Half of the final was mostly not from the previous exams, but the last it of class and some previous exams stuff.
I liked Schultz, she really tried to help us good grades and rewarded us for working so hard. My advice would be STUDY FOR POP QUIZZES and STUDY FOR THE FINAL. I had a solid A+ in the class, but failed both the quiz category and the final and dropped to a B+. Overall, not a bad teacher but you gotta work for a good grade.
Prof. Schultz does everything she can to make students succeed. Her flipped classroom method works great and lectures are really helpful. She will drop some grades if the class seems like they are working. The videos are very informative and exams are just like the homework. Study HARD for the Final though, it's tough
worst professor ever, dont take his class.
She's mean person and doesnt even care about teaching I think.
Shes easily the worst professor Ive ever had. Im still getting a B, but this professor wont ever reply to emails, explain anything clearly, or use an ounce of common sense. Some assignments are due at 5am, some classes we go over one sample problem for an hour, you cant use a laptop for notes but its a stats class, etc
Hoo boy, literally one of the worst professors I've ever had. She does not answer ANY emails, has no office hours, and often leaves the freaking lecture early, so all 200 students in lecture have to bother the TA's who sometimes don't know the answer either. Her class is poorly run, she isn't helpful at all aside from her videos. hated this class.
The course is well distributed amongst many different aspects and hence allows the students to learn a lot of different things. Pre lectures are self explanatory and hence going to lectures is not mandatory.
The class would have been fine without being required to use those awful, basic calculators. One little mistake typing into your calculator and you have to restart from the beginning! I do not even think she has office hours. Oh well, at least she is becoming better compared to her previous semesters. The final was not difficult.
I'm not sure why she is an unpopular professor generally. I thought that she put exactly what she said would be on the quizzes and tests on the quizzes and tests with few surprises. She also hit us with random extra credit to inflate everyone's grades, which no one dislikes. She is good, I recommend, but there is a lot of busy work.
Extremely unorganized course. Professor doesn't answer questions thoroughly, she only refer us to the TA's. The TA's don't answer questions thoroughly either. The basic calculator rule is bad. There are no advantages of using a basic calculator vs a scientific calculator. Doesn't reply to emails. Doesn't even teach in lecture. Lots of extra credit
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. Her lecture videos are not helpful when it comes to the homework assignments and quizzes at all. She never responds to any emails and is just a horrible teacher. You're best bet is to go to your TAs office hours every week for hours to understand how to do the work.
I took this class first semester of my freshman year and it wasn't so bad. I took AP Statistics so I had a strong foundation of statistics already. Moodle is the main thing used for learning as there are pre-recorded lectures on there so lecture is pointless. Lecture is not mandatory and it's a waste of time in my opinion and the TAs are helpful.
she is unresponsive to emails & incredibly rude when she does respond. Given that this class was online, the majority of the questions (unanswered unfortunately) could be found on course hero/chegg/& similar sites. It seems like Professor Schultz copies & pastes her whole course, yet expects & looks down upon the slightest slack in her students.
1 midterm worth 24, 1 final worth 25 percent of the grade. Test questions are word problems, and there is no partial credit. The topics are insanely easy but the prof manages to spin it in a way that makes it super annoying.
lecture videos are bad, no time for exams (40 mins) 15 problems, no study guide,
schultz is rude, not understanding, everything for the class is online & its difficult math material
Midterms are ridiculous. Only simple calculator allowed and too less time. Grade doesn't reflect how good you are in stats but rather how fast you can do computations and without mistakes that excel can do within seconds
I don't think that teaching a class with a good amount of math through videos is a good idea. The calculators were pretty much useless, and the test was too fast-paced. If you can take STAT 100 instead, go that route.
I don't know why everyone hates her. The online, pre-recorded lectures were easy to understand. There was one meeting weekly for an Excel project, but attendance was optional and you could do the project solo in 30 min. The 3 midterms just covered the content from the lectures, but her calculator rule is stupid. The material was pretty simple math.
One thing about Colleen is that she is really good at teaching, I was never confused on any of the topics she taught us. However, the issue with this class was the tests. The tests almost never reflected what we were taught. I would come into the test feeling prepared, leave thinking I did well, and then get a bad grade. No prioritizing of students
Absolutely horrible class. For a class that can be substituted, it is so difficult. She goes out of her way to make the quizzes way more difficult than anything in class. She also removed the grades tab on Moodle. Also, you can't go back on the questions in the quiz. It is completely luck based. Just pray you get the difficult ones first.
Quizzes make the class horrid. Her online lectures honestly aren't too bad but they don't contain enough information for the quizzes. Her wording on quizzes is absolutely awful and you are not allowed to backtrack. She also seems to not care about technical difficulties on the quizzes either, so if your zoom recording messes up, too bad you get a 0
prepare to do a huge amount of difficult calculations without using TI, as well as a bunch of projects and case studies. A fun fact about her class is that she seldom taught lessons on lectures since all the courses can be accessed as online class which are also mandatory.
the course was extremely bad
The exams require answers with 4 decimals, and being a single decimal off means you miss the entire problem. She makes you buy a book (printed out powerpoint slides) for 3% of your grade. Lectures are useless since all learning is done by watching videos. She tries to make an easy stat class difficult for no reason.
Homework due first week of class and have to watch all the pre lectures before class which makes real lectures meaningless. Stupid rules too on attendances and homeworks. No clear instructions.
For Econ major, 202 is counted in your 30 hour major courses so it is mandatory.all the course materials and knowledge points are all online and she will not say a single word on class. And she will actually stop the course the prohibit students from taking photos of the slides, because she said nobody can use devices on class, which is ridiculous.
Easily the worst teacher I have had in my entire life. Has no respect for any of the students. Forces you to use a clunky, "simplified" calculator which makes actually doing homework and test problems near impossible. If you absolutely have to take this course, do it with another professor or try to subsitute it.
Don't take if you don't need to. Professor found out how to replace most of her work with covid era stuff, screams lazy. Online Exams with required invasive browser extension, most material taught through pre-lecture videos, actual lecture just 1-2 problems, inaccurate Moodle due dates, harsh grading, tedious rounding requirements. Save yourself
Don't listen to the description of this course, it is 100% online in a covid-era format, and the only thing you ever do in "class" is 2-3 easy example problems from the lecture she posts online. She is very rude to her students in class, not allowing them to use any electronics in class. Avoid this class and professor by all means necessary.
Very misunderstood professor. Yes, she teaches a weeder class. Her uploaded explanations are so good and you don't need anything else to understand the course. The homework and tests are difficult though and she does throw in some curveballs in the quizzes but the final is easy enough to get a good grade.
Worst professor ever. She gives very few examples that are not at all representative of what is asked from us on the homework. She'll also expect you to use an outdated, non-TI calculator for complex problems. Yet you'll still lose points for not rounding correctly. Also, no electronics in class, despite it being... 2023! Avoid her at all costs
There are many exams and all fill-in-the-blank questions, no step score, as long as the result is wrong is 0 points. lecture basically can not learn anything are self-learning, can only say is a piece of shit.
Very difficult and you could never see the grade until finished the final exam. That's awful. The professor ignores the student's emails and never reply them.
Let me put it this way, if you want to put yourself through misery, then take this class. Lecture slides give you minimal information for homework and exams. There are 6 exams throughout this course which is unheard of. Office hours are pointless b/c the TA's just read off of the cheat sheet and explain the homework to you. Don't take this class.
took her 202 in spring Impossible to reach outside of the class
Her lectures are very good, easy to understand and are all online.I would say if you watch the lectures the quizzes will not be too bad. However, she is not reachable outside of class, and will not respond to emails. The class is very cookie-cutter, follow syllabus and you will do fine. It is not an easy, but if you put in the work you will be fine
The exams are way harder than any of the homework or lecture quizzes. She doesn't lecture at all in class it's all COVID videos. She gives hardly any practice and the practice that she does give she doesn't give the answers. Awful teacher.
why she doesn't teach anything during the lecture time. i have to learn it all through the video from covid time?? so it's time killer. if you dont have enough time to spent on this course, skip it! using stat100 instead.
This is for those who want to take ECON484: STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. She is awful. The exam is 72% and attendance and participation are 28%. You will NEVER know how she grades your attendance, which means she can do whatever she wants to your grade. Even if you get two 90s in your first midterm, useless, you still get a B. Horrible torture.
Econ 202 is a terrible class taught by a terrible professor and I got an A. Lectures are pointless. She doesn't respond to emails. Online tests are dumb for this because it only takes one small mistake to mess up the whole problem. It should be a test graded on work. You have to use the simplest calc that is horrible. It doesn't add to anything
Only THREE answer attempts allowed for those HUGE chunks of homework, NOT QUIZZES, and you will NEVER know which question u got wrong and you'll repeat the same problems OVER AND OVER again, trying to figure out which questions you got wrong until your head explodes and you can salvage a little bit of your GPA in these pathetic THREE ATTEMPTS.
Absolutely horrendous professor. In fact, worst teaching I have ever experienced PERIOD. Professor belittles and acts like god when explaining mean, median, and mode in class only to drop the most inconceivable word problems on the test asking you to find the coefficient of variation with bummy poverty calculator. STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING THE CLASS. SUCH AN AWFUL CLASS. This class is structured so that you fail no matter how hard you try. The professor doesn't convey anything important during the lectures and her presentation skills are sooo bad. This class is setup for your failure.
6 mid terms for a basic stats class is this department out of there mind?? They also on proctor U so every other Thursday she gives herself the day off. Want help? She does not have office hours. Tests are impossible. Does not lecture she does nothing. If you are seeing a positive review on this course, she probably wrote it herself.
I can not believe the econ department is still letting this class be taught by this women. Students are having mental breakdowns over a entry level course. She does not care about her students and enjoys putting students in a situation to fail. horrible does not even begin to say how my experience was this course.
Dr. Schultz definitely has a hard course; however, she is very helpful to her students and does an excellent job conveying the course material. Additionally, she has recordings of all her lectures online which are great for review (they are so thorough that she could make the class an online course tomorrow).
Was terrified of this class based on what I heard about the professor prior. I bombed two online midterms, and still passed with an A because she lets students drop 2/6 of their midterms. Final was the easiest final I have taken at this school, and she gives clear due dates and instructions. Go to TA office hours for homework assignments.
This class has a reputation for being quite challenging, but if you stay on top of the material and utilize helpful study tools like Unstuck study, you can succeed. The professor's teaching style may not work for everyone, but putting in the effort pays off.
uses covid-era videos as 'pre-lecture', 6 exams and only meets twice a week (she basically gives herself every 1/4 lectures off), no technology in class, required to use bummy calculator. exams are not partial credit questions for reasons against common sense. class is unnecessarily tedious in every regard. avoid if possible!
Class is set up horribly and the professor ignores her students. I had to reach out to her 3 different times about a technical problem during one of my exams that made me get a 0 and she ended up telling me to use one of the exam drops. I told her I had other exams I wanted to drop so she asked for my name and NetId and ghosted me
Classes were supposed to be moved from Moodle to Canvas. She just copy and pasted her Moodle link on canvas. When you do homework she doesn't even tell you what you got wrong. She's also just really rude to students. I was in class and saw a student on their laptop and she called them out to 300+ ppl and said "you're probably watching something."
She does use pre-lectures online, but she uses lecture time for practice problems that are really similar to exam questions. She gives a lot of resources for practice and help as well. She is always willing to help and she's a tough grader because she sets clear expectations. I had no trouble with the class.
Unfair grading practices
Professor Schultz was very good at explaining the course content. If you attend lectures and keep up with homework assignments, you'll do well on the exams. She sets clear expectations upfront and gives you the road map to succeed in her class. It's up to the student to follow through.
It's hilarious how much potential this class has to be fair yet isn't. I liked the online video format because it allowed me to revisit the material. There were 6 midterms, 2 drops, which I liked because you don't have to memorize as much. But the midterms were written UNFAIR. Got 1a wrong? The rest of 1 will be wrong too, bye bye 15% of your score
Literally high school stuff, no laptop or any other electronic devices in the lecture, HW requires calculating a lot of tedious but time-consuming stuff such as correlation coefficient by hand even in 21 century…… never would take this again
most redundant teaching method/class I've ever encountered. Lack of effort is notable from first week when directed to watch pre-recorded lectures online and purchase her textbook, which is simply screenshots of the online lectures for $50. Prof. Sun, Buckley or Bebczuk all more competent. Also, is she adding fake reviews on here? Econ dept tarnish
Schultz explains the course content well, but you'll be spending less applying it on exams than you'll spend punching numbers into the required kiddie calculator and trying not to double-tap "=".
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! She will show up late everyday and make you do all of the learning by yourself online. Not once did she show up and do her job of teaching. Lectures consist of 2-3 example problems that she barely explains. There are discussions, but they are NOT relevant to the class and what we are tested on.
Uses a flipped-classroom so all learning material is online and practice problems are done in-lecture. Lectures aren't useful unless you need practice. Homework and reviews match Midterms well. The final which requires you to pore through the video lectures is an exception. I liked her teaching style but her grading is a bit harsh.
The kiddie calculators were pretty bad. The tests had few questions with sequential parts, so if you drop a negative sign early on, its over. She somehow found a way to make easier content annoying to learn. I recommend taking this class somewhere else.
Very mean and inflexible professor!!! She only allows us to use one unsophisticated calculator that only has few basic functions to calculate very complex statistical functions, which can be totally solved with a higher-tech calculator such as TI nsipre. This imposes much more unnecessary heavy workload on students. AND MOODLE is terrible!!
Don't take this class. She is nice and all but the class is 50 min and you don't learn anything. Also, the calculator is so unnecessary to buy. The tests are heavy and the material does not prepare you well. Don't take this class!!!!!
don't take this class. the homework is useless and because of it your grade drops. exams reflect what's going on in class but the majority you have to teach yourself. take stat 100 if you can instead
TAKE A DIFFERENT STAT CLASS IF POSSIBLE. The course content is not that difficult(basic stats), but the class is put together so incredibly bad that you have to try way too hard for a good grade in an INTRO stat class. If you get the mean or something basic wrong, the whole test is cooked. no partial credit. teacher, kinda mean, flipped classroom.
the homeworks are pretty long, they do not really match the exams, but other than seeing past the passive aggressiveness that presents with some students, she's not the worst but not the best either.
The materials itself are not too bad, but the way the class is set up for sure troubles a lot of people. Don't take this class unless you have to.
The professor did not teach anything in the lecture instead we did questions based on the pre lectures that you have to watch on canvas every single week before class. These videos were sometimes 2 hrs long.
This is the worst class at UIUC. The material isn't hard but the structure is so bad. Everything graded is very tedious to do and they don't give any partial credit, so one misclick on the awful calculator they require you to use and you're cooked. You wont learn anything in lecture. The required book is literally slides printed out. Take Stat 100.
Such an unreasonable professor. I wouldn't take this class. Just take STAT 100.
Has no regard for mental health.
Not conceptually hard, but poorly structured. Long pre lectures, unclear grading on homework. You often don't know where you stand in the class until the final grades of the semester are posted.
I don't get these reviews. I loved Schultz and I loved the class. My TA was great, Xinxuan. Often gave us answers in class. You don't need to go to lecture since it's really just practice problems (which helps a lot), but she does need to see your packet is "completed". Just take notes on the pre-recorded lecture modules and study that.
