Do your self a favor and take him. So many points available for improvement. Tests are based on lecture plus in text problems and homework. I really enjoyed this class. Made chem fun! Make sure you are ready for the subject because it is not easy.
This professor makes a very hard, heavy based class a lot easier. He helps you understand the material than any other professor. The tests are also based off of the in chapter questions and end of chapter questions. He also has a great humor to help keep the class lighthearted. Overall, its a great class to take.
I took this professor this semester and he has by far been the best professor that I have had. He really cares about his students and checks up on everyone throughout the semester. His lectures are funny and light hearted and he always goes over what we are confused on. Overall, he is an amazing professor!
He sets great examples for lessons and labs and always cares for his students.
Professor Commodore tries his very best to help everyone pass the class. His lectures consist of power points and going over a bunch of practice problems from the book. All hw is from the book. There is no online hw. The tests usually consist of true/false q's, multiple choice, and long answer q's. There's a quiz in every lecture and lab.
I would recommend this professor to anyone who plans on taking CHEM001. The questions in the textbook is basically what will be on the exams. His lectures are clear and really makes sure you understand the material. Great professor.
He makes it clear what the expectations are to succeed in class. Very fair in grading. No group projects. Genuinely wants each student to do well.
Great Teacher. The lectures are very clear and help with the test. Lots of homework at times but will prepare you for the test. Tests are hard but are based on the problems we do in class.
Commodore is any amazing teacher. Really cares about his students and is completely open-minded to changes in his classroom. There was a lot of work, but if you do the work then you will pass with an A or B. His lectures were thorough, but may need to be a little more organized. Gives everyone equal opportunities for extra credit. Overall best prof
Honestly, I don't write too many reviews on professors nor have I used this prior to taking this class. I used to just pick a class that fit with my schedule disregarding the reviews, which ended up biting me in the butt. However, after finally checking the reviews I found a great professor who cares about you and wants to make sure you understand.
I've never reviewed any of my professors but since this chem class was the hardest I've taken, I thought it appropriate. Prof. St. Germain is the kind of professor you'd hope to get in a class like this. He's fair, caring and really works hard at making sure you succeed. If I had to take another chem class, I'd take him again no question.
Professor St. Germain is the type of professor we could use a bit more of. He is passionate about education and the bettering of oneself. Nothing is given, you have to earn it yourself. He is here to help and motivate and inspire but ultimately the choice is yours to decide the kind of person you want to be, a lump or a go getter. Stay Up!
It was a pleasure taking Chem001 with a Professor whose only goal is to make sure youre learning everything he is teaching. Most of our overall grade are based off the test and there is lots of homework and assignments. Study, complete assignments, and show up on time and you will pass. Hes a great teacher and is very caring for his students.
Professor Commodore is probably the only professor I know who cares so much about his students. He works very hard and puts in the time to make sure his students gets something out of his class. He even find ways to teach and inspire the class that I don't really see in most classes. He is motivational speaker and he seems like a cool person.
Love Professor Commodore, wish he taught Chem 2. I wish we had more teachers like him, he genuinely cares for his students and you will get the grade you deserve if you do all your work and study hard. He gives a fair amount of opportunities for extra credit, so take them! He makes class fun, and has thorough explanations for concepts that are hard
Seriously... if you have to take CHEM.... get Prof. St. Germain, soon to be Doctor St. Germain Ph.d BEST teacher at Solano thus far. I haven't taken Chem in 20 years and decided to continue my education and was extremely nervous. I hit the winning lottery getting this professor! Not only is he a great teacher, what I learned is actually retained!
Absolutely loved this class. By far the best professor Ive had wish he taught Chem 002!! He truly cares about his students success and makes sure no one is left behind. Not an easy class - chapter work, labs, 4 tests and even bigger quizzes to prepare you, but worth it! Chemistry is a hard subject, but Prof Commodore makes it fun and engaging.
The best professor for chem hands down. There is a lot of homework and I mean A LOT, but it prepares you for the tests and the material. You can tell this professor really cares about his students, extremely compassionate and checks up on students constantly. If I could rate him a 10 instead of a 5 I would. Take him if you want to actually learn.
This was the most intense class I took this semester despite of taking 20 credits. He is blunt and honest, he doesnt let anyone fall behind, not even one person. The amount of work might seem overwhelming BUT ITS NOT. Expect at least two assignments due per week, 4-5 quizzes (open book) and 30qs tests. If you do what he asks you will do great!
Commodore is an extremely caring professor teaching an extremely challenging class. He is unique in that he calls students periodically throughout the semester to check up on them, offering words of encouragement and carefully monitoring progress. The workload is intense, and if you don't do the homework, you're not going to pass this class.
Professor commodore is very caring and he wants you to pass. Chemistry is a tough subject in my opinion to get into but you although he is a great professor with a fun personality he makes you work for a good grade. With the pandemic and online classes being mandatory professor commodore still manages to do his best to teach. Great professor!
Really good professor! There are a lot of assignments but if you do them, they'll really help you understand the material. He's also very supportive and easy to talk to. I would love to take another course taught by him again. Lectures aren't necessarily mandatory, but it would be difficult to understand the material without them.
Professor St. Germain is incredible. I wish he could teach me my entire degree! He has a great sense of humor and connects well with the students. He works really hard to help you succeed. It is not an easy class, there is a lot of homework and the tests are long, but you really learn the material well. Perfect happy medium. amazing professor.
Genuinely cares about his students and checks-in when assignments arent being turned in. Explains lectures in the easiest way possible and offers 14 extra credit before the beginning of school. TAKE THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Commodore is an incredible professor. Not only does he actually care about learning, he gives lots of helpful real world advice. His class is exactly as he presents it, and he makes it very clear he is not there to make learning difficult or to trick you. Lots of homework, but if you do it, youre good. Wish he could teach all my chem classes.
If you need Chem 001, trust me when I say you need to take Commodores class. Very caring and very helpful professor. There is A LOT of work but everything is organized and he allows for late work. Exams are straightforward and based on quiz problems - no tricks, no gimmicks. Stay on top of all the assignments and you will be successful!
Amazing teacher. He will make you work for your grade though. Lots of homework, but he makes class fun without a doubt. Take this Chem class! And do the extra credit at the beginning. He really is a caring prof and he doesn't hold up the class with nonsense. Grind through the homework, because they are pretty much like the tests. Recommend.
St Germain is an amazing professor! He really cares about his students. He even takes the time to call every student to see how everyone is doing in the class and if anything is hindering them. I absolutely adored him as a teacher and would take his class a thousand times over! Thank you!
He's a very understanding and caring professor. You can access him outside of class through phone, email, Discord, you name it. He'll try his best to help you out. Be prepared for his quizzes though, they are massive assignments that take at least a week to finish. He provides optional assignments and doesn't penalize for late work.
Take him! He was very supportive during my time in his class. He checks up on students and he truly cares about them. He assigns a lot of homework though. Be prepared to put in the work. He will answer all of your questions in class and will come up with creative analogies for any topic u r having trouble with. Do the extra credit at the beginning!
Before this class started, our professor sent us an email readying us for the semester, telling us that it would be a lot of work. However, he gives us SO many resources in order to understand what we are learning, and is so open and available to help us. This is a teacher who truly wants to see you succeed, and helped many people strive.
Professor Germain is a really good professor in my opinion. Yes, he does except a lot from you, since this is a college course. There are a lot of assignments, and I really suggest that you do them all. It may seem daunting, but if you do it, it helps with your learning and your grade will reflect that.
This class was tough! There are a lot of labs and assignments, but if you turn in your work ahead of the due dates and study hard you should be fine. He is a really great professor: cares about his students and replies quickly through Discord, email, and phone. P.S. take his warning email seriously, do the extra credit before the class starts!
this class was hard, but do-able if you put in the effort, create a balance in life to allow a schedule that allows you to put in time and effort. The class lectures were well organized and detail oriented, the text book was helpfull along with the videos from the textbook. this professor knows his stuff well!
First of the prof. is awesome. He is upfront about what he expects. The class is 100% doable, but you need to commit the time. It seems like a lot and can be overwhelming at times, but if you do a little every day you can manage it. Get a planner, plan out your week, and do the work. Join discord it's incredibly helpful.
Professor Commodore is such a wonderful asset to our college! If you have to chemistry, definitely take his class. He is very down to earth, incredibly supportive, and understanding. The subject demands a ton of effort for success, and I feel like he put in equal effort as an instructor in connecting with his students which says a lot. DO HOMEWORK!
The best professor ever. Very understanding and sweet. The class was pretty hard, but if you do your homework and stay on top of everything, you will be fine.
Commodore is amazing! With Chemistry being hard itself he finds a way for everyone to understand it. As long as you put in the effort and do the work that he gives out you'll pass his class. Don't be afraid to ask him questions or to reach out when you don't understand something because he's always there to help.
If you can take any science/chemistry classes by Commodore, I would. He is one of the most caring professors I've had in my college career. He does the most to help you when you are falling behind, and will even extend deadlines if you have emergencies/just need the extra time. He really is a fantastic professor and person. 5/5 would take again
This class is very hard. However, he really helps you pass this class & wants to see his students succeed as long as you put in the effort. Recommend doing all extra credit/optional work, it's a lot but it will help you better understand material. Stay on top of lectures & homework. Also need to study alot. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
For rating from Nov 14th, I meant to say I wasn't sure of my grade yet, not that my grade was incomplete, cause I haven't finished the course yet. oops
Prof. Com is a gem in SCC. Honestly, I wish more professors were like him! As for the class, it's A LOT OF WORK and you need to put in time to study. Manage your time and don't procrastinate! Just do your work (and optional hw), put in AT LEAST 15hrs study time, and you will be successful. This was my hardest class, but it was also the best.
Commodore is a very caring professors who does care about his students in his class. He gives more than enough material and opportunities to succeed. His lectures are very material heavy and allow you to pass the class for the tests. Also be aware of how much work the class is because while it is very straightforward, there is a lot of work to do.
Great Professor would highly recommend, within the class you will learn not only chemistry but how to make the perfect sandwich.
This is one of the best professors I have ever had! Chemistry in general is very content heavy and requires lots of time dedicated to it. Although you should not take it if you are not going to put in the work, this professor makes the work much easier to do! He gives many opportunities for office hours in different ways and extra credit! Very cool
He's a great teacher and very much cares for his students and encourages them to keep going.
If you are going to take chem160, take this professor.
Professor Com gives out a ton of homework, but it what is gonna help you the most to grasp onto the concepts. He is very accessible outside of class and understanding. It is necessary to dedicate at least 9 hours to studying outside of class per week. He is one of the most helpful professors on campus, so I really recommend taking his class.
great CHEM Professor. Material is heavy but he takes his time to explain and even uses food analogies to make sure we understand the concepts. Do the work, show up for classes, and ask questions if you don't understand and you'll pass the class, easy. Would for sure take again!
Good guy. You will get 3 midterms, 1 smaller midterm, and a final. For 3 of the midterms, you will get a very long take home quiz that takes about 5-20 hours depending on the person. To succeed in this class, time management is paramount, so digest the material parts at a time. Prof will also teach you about hot sauce and the perfect sandwich.
I haven't taken a chem class since junior year of highschool and took this as a college freshman without a refresher course, but it's definitely doable if you actively pay attention. Very fast-paced class, lecture heavy so make sure to take notes, you'll be able to use them on exams. You'll have to purchase a $60 lab manual and there's a textbook.
A great professor for Chem you just have to be willing to put in the work, this class is hard but it is no different to any other class, rewatch the lectures, come to class on time, and just put in the work . He is a very understanding professor and will help at any given moment. The work can be overwhelming but it makes the course easier in the end
I already had a difficult time learning and retaining info well, so this was a tough class for me in the beginning. I studied about 20-30 hours per week, took a few all-nighters, and passed this class overall. If I can do it, so can you! Be prepared to study a lot, he's a great teacher that will help and encourage you throughout this course.
I absolutely loved this Professor! He is a little assignment heavy but it's extremely worth it in the end because he lets you use everything you complete towards exams and the final! He genuinely cares about your success and checks in if you miss class to make sure you're doing okay! Lab was fun and he, himself, is super fun and funny as well! :)
Thinking of Commodore's chemistry class? Not a breeze, especially for beginners. Despite the challenge, Prof. Commodore excels, ensuring you grasp the material. His care for understanding sets him apart. Despite difficulty, he makes learning enjoyable. Take his class, ask questions; he's there for your success and for your overall well being!
Professor Commodore is an excellent professor. Even though there is a lot of work regarding chemistry, he gives us the tools we need to succeed in the class. Of course, we spent a long time working on the worksheets, quizzes, and labs, but he gave us time to do the work. I recommend doing the extra credit before the semester starts.
I used to hate chemistry but after taking this class it quickly became my favorite subject this semester. He's a really chill professor and I was never intimidated to ask him questions. Also don't fall behind on his note/quiz packets. When you get them, it may seem intimidating but it's really easy. Do like 5 questions a day and you're good.
THE BEST CHEM PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. Commodore is THE BEST CHEM 001 professor. I took Higashi, Lam and in my opinion he is the best. Super responsive through Discord regarding questions we had about homework. ONE PROFESSOR WHO CARES. Keep in mind you have to put lots of work into homework!
a very good teacher !! i would recommend this teacher to anyone weather it be their first chem class or not!
when he says to start an assignment early, LISTEN TO HIM. his class was tough bc it was my first chem class in 3(?) years and i had little to no knowledge about chem before this class along with the heavy-ish workload. do not be afraid to ask questions, he is always willing to help! he is a really great professor overall!
He uses a lot of food analogies to explain science. He cares for his students but lacks the motivation to overly go out his way to explain questions. He does say he is lazy. You can use notes, quizzes and exams to help you with his timed tests so make sure to ask questions or he will NOT explain it to you. Do all your work and you will pass.
The best professor ever! He made chemistry a lot easier than I expected. He uses analogies to really refine what he's trying to say. Overall, he cares for his students and ensures that everyone understands the material.
A great professor to take at Solano. Lectures were chill, the pace never felt too fast or too slow(they were also recorded even if u missed a day), labs were thoroughly explained, gives opportunities for extra credit and to redo lab notebooks, has review days prior to exams, and drops the lowest exam score. Just manage your time and you'll be good.
If you're going to take Chemistry for the foreseeable future, take his introductory, as it will give you good fundamentals to take in higher Chemistry classes. Very kind and understanding and the learning environment is top-notch. Highly recommend.
Makes everything easy to understand and gives good examples. Expect to use around 10-15 hours per week on homework if you want a good grade! Manage your time well and you will do fine. He allows open note and then lessens the amount of notes for every exam. Using the quizzes to study helps a lot too. Do the extra credit for easy extra points!
one of my fav professors at solano! chem 1 was a heavy class but make sure you start assignments, ask lots of questions, try to do as much extra credit as you can and save the recorded lectures! a great professor overall, I wish he taught chem 2
Incredible professor! Very approachable, will elaborate on a concept if you're stuck. Textbook heavy, expect to put in at *LEAST* 10 hours outside of class a week if you strive for a high grade. Lots of optional assignments, but the points add up. Record each lab in your lab notebook, and complete all work a week before due, and you'll be good!
Take home quizzes that consist of a hefty amount of problems. Surprising to see that he expected us to complete those take home quizzes again before upcoming exam (took a month). Strange we had to write on our exams in pen if it was in pencil he wouldn't even give you credit, no exceptions. Overall great prof, just put in the work! You can do it!
Absolute favorite teacher I've probably ever had. Would take him for any Chemistry class. Truly wants to help his students succeed. Super friendly, funny, and passionate about chemistry. It's hard material but he gives you everything you need to succeed.
he really cares about his students always giving us motivation.
He is an amazing professor and is always willing to help. He is always available during office hours and willing to make study groups after class to help students catch up on homework assignments and answer any questions. His exams are difficult, and being prepared as much as possible will help tremendously.
This professor actually tries his best to help us. He provides a lot of material so you can success in this class.
Professor comm gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Do the work and use all of the worksheets on the exams! Also do the extra credit! Textbook is free
Literally one of the GOAT of professors. Gave extra credit that cushions your grade, there really isn't a reason you shouldn't pass. Funny and understanding of all his students. Records his lectures. A little homework heavy, but Exam wise he gives you all the necessary items you need to pass and understand. JUST PUT IN THE TIME AND WORK!
Amazing professor and caring. Gives extra credit to help boost grades. hw is heavy on time but SO IMPORTANT for exams!!! PUT IN THE TIME TO STUDY AND DO HW. Exams weren't anything crazy, everything explained in lectures + hw. Records lectures, but do not miss class. Did study groups & bought food for us. Willing to explain things + help understand
If I could have him as a professor for all of my chem classes I would. He was such a big help this semester and provides all the tools for his students to succeed. Do your work and ask for help if you need it!
Super awesome teacher!! He clearly cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Hes super helpful and id definitely take his class again
Very kind and hard working professor, he will give you all of the tools you need to succeed, you just need to listen to what he has to say. While I struggled due to some personal issues, he checked in routinely with me and others who were struggling. Listen to him, put in the time and effort, and you will do well in the course.
This professor was by far the easiest professor out of all my classes, would 100% recommend if you wanna have more experience in Chemistry, this is where you can start to help with that. Does give homework but it is very easy.
This professor was honestly very fun to take, if you need to take an Introduction to Chemistry, I recommend taking him. Expect to take notes and do homework on time or else you will fall behind. I used a whole notebook for his class; he also likes to use papers, textbooks, and tophat. Ask questions in this class it is very important to do so!
Professor Com was easily one of my favs taking chem. Be prepared to take a lot of notes as well with a lot of hours of studying. He is very great at teaching and gave out examples that made it easier to understand. Labs were pretty hard so make sure to pay attention and participate. I would suggest him if you're looking to know the basics of chem!!
Be prepared to spend most of your time studying for this class. Amazing professor who really cares about his students. Pay attention to lectures and quizzes before exams because most of the time the same questions gone through in class and on the quizzes will be on the tests.
Be ready to put in the work. Comm is a great professor and very real with you. He gives you all the resources you need to study for his tests. He's very accessible and understanding. Just communicate with him and he'll help you pass his class.
The problems on the quizzes are very similar to questions on tests. Make sure to study outside of classroom time. Don't fall behind on assignments, you will not be able to catch up.
Commodore is easily one of the best professors Ive had in my educational career so far. He prepares you so well for chem002 and wants to see you succeed. He also provides extra credit assignments throughout the entire semester (which can really help your grade). He reads the energy of the room so well and he is super relatable and funny.
Professor is one of the best!! His class is difficult if you have not done math and science in a while. He shows every resource imaginable and has review days. Stay on top the work do the quizzes and practice the problems. His work load is heavy so take caution when signing up for classes this coming semester!
If I could take him again I would. 10/10 professor. He follows his syllabus to a T, and open book everything. If you aren't sure about chem and want to take a refresher course this prof is the one. He makes sure you understand what he is explaining and you aren't, he will go over again until you do.
Was a great professor, definitely have to put in the work but i learned a lot. Made me feel confident when taking the exams. There are a couple of exams but if you do the quizzes and worksheets assign all should be good. Really great professor would take again
One of the best professors I've had, making the subject easier to learn. Try to engage in the lectures and labs; it makes a huge difference. As long as you show effort to learn and improve, the same energy will be reciprocated. Overall, the class was great and fun to have.
Commodore was a great professor! The workload for this class is heavy but its sets you up for success for exams so pay attention to the quizzes and use them as study guides. Ask questions in lecture and engage with the content, he's a cool guy and transparent about what to expect for his class and exams.
Such a great professor! He really wants you to succeed and never makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Very laidback... just be prepared to put the work in. I mean there's lots and lots of homework and studying, as well as showing up to every lecture AND lab. Drops one exam out of five. Would take him again!
Lots of work and takes a good bit of time outside of class to really do well in, but Com really cares as long as you do too. Help is always available and experiments in lab will actually be fun (he just might make yall sing Taylor Swift occasionally). Newfound passion for chemistry thanks to this professor.
I enjoyed being in his class. Professor Comm deserves two thumbs up and a raise 👍😎👍
Professor Comm is a great professor. He's got a great personality and an all around great guy to be around. He made labs fun to be in and I never really felt that bored in lecture. Take organized notes, get yourself somebody to study with (cuts the work you need to do in half, it saved me from failing an exam) and you'll be just fine.
He's a good teacher, and he gives you a lot of support during the semester.
If you wanted easy, go find a different professor. You're better off learning from the take home quizzes he assigns because his lectures are extremely fast, and often confusing. His class has a lot of work (80 questions quizzes, Key terms, Key Concept Videos, etc,) He also teaches Quantum Chem and has an exam for it ('to prepare you from Chem 002')
Prof. Com is seriously an amazing instructor! I hated Chemistry, and could never understand it before I took his class. He teaches in a way that really gets you to understand why and how certain things work. He will show you visuals, and compare it to real life examples so you truly understand it. He always wants you to succeed. Loved him!
Com is an absolutely amazing professor and a super nice guy. He is extremely kind, funny, encouraging, and really cares about his students and helping us succeed. He's there to help you in any way he can. Chemistry is hard, but he breaks it down in a way that is easier to understand. Do expect to put a lot of work in but it pays off in the end.
