Botany in general is boring. If you listen and study the notes you will be fine
Easy Class!Thinks he's too good to be teaching at JMU and grading is irrational
funniest professor i've had so far, material extremely boring
hilarious!!!!
worst teacher i have ever had. he is concieted and arrogant. boring class and extremely hard. do not do not do not take.
very humorous and friendly. can approach to ask question but don't take his jokes too seriously since most are not meant to be offensive but rather just playing around. pretty hard grader and very hard lab exams (same for all bio labs).
Do NOT take him for a gen-ed class, in fact do not take him for ANY course. Tests are HARD with detailed stuff NO ONE remembers. Very anal, perhaps b/c he wrote the book, which he requires as the text..Guess sales weren't too good.
Horrible lab professor, has no clue what he's doing so it leaves you dumber after the class is over with than you were when you started, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Someone should leave that man in Ecuador!
Best class I ever took. VERY CHALLENGING but McMullen is so helpful and offers study sessions outside class. Very smart and interesting man and very funny!
Generally you either like Prof Mac or he drives you nuts. Its based on if you understand his humor, and the fact he is often kidding around (many think his jokes are serious, which they are not). If you like him, you'll take him for every class you can.
very funny!!!!
hard class and even harder exams
great teacher. lightens things up with horrible jokes. tedious material. going to office hours and review sessions is helpful.
This man is so sarcastic...but his biggest problem is that he started out failing biology and therefore thinks everyone should learn by perservance; in other words you start out failing his tests and must attempt to work your way up.
the man can't teach! he claims it is all about the general information when the test are really the little details. the test are so hard. GET OUT NOW!!!
get out now! Impossible tests about meaningless stuff. With out a doubt the worst class/teacher Ive ever taken.
He is the most God aweful professor that I have ever had! I have spent hours studying for that class and have gone to his review sessions but I am failing his class- and getting A's in everything else. That says that something wrong with this professor!
He's a really good teacher. The people who say it's hard aren't doing any work. You have to go to class and it's boring, but bearable. I have a B while putting forth only a little effort, and I am not a rocket scientist.
very hard but he wants you to succeed. gives up his time for study sessions every week that hardly anyone goes to. nice guy, corny jokes. you will have to work really hard but you will learn a lot.
cant teach for his life..goes off about his research in the galapagos every class..tests are impossible..dont know where he gets the test questions from...drop the class now
He is pretty thorough (but with boring Powerpoint lectures. You should only take him if you don't mind getting a B or below in the class. I would not take him again.
Had him for Plant Systematics. Very thorough, nice guy. Must work very hard and it helps if he doesn't dislike you. He's a good guy and doesn't deserve all the negativity!
Possibly the worst professor EVER. What is he talkinga bout? Stop reliving the old days, rememebw what strories you told! How did he ever get to teach! TERRIBLE
He's always willing to help during his office hours. His tests are fair- from lectures/notes. Ignore the previous post, the person probably dropped the class.
He needs to stop bragging about how well he did in college and get on with things. Also, the tests are impossible- not from the lecture notes at all. I always thought I did well on the tests and then I would get a horrible grade.
Esta clase es maravillosa! Y el professor... que fantastico! El es inteligente, guapo, y chistoso. Que mas? Oh, el es chile, sin duda. Luego.
not very difficult, though the class subject was a complete waste of time. easy A.

quizzes are 70% of your grade. other than writing down the notes off his powerpoint you have to write down every single word he says bc it just MIGHT be on the quiz. If you pay attention and write down all the notes you should be good. the books are in reserve so you dont have to buy them.
Not the worst teacher i've ever had..but not the best either. the notes are on blackboard so class is basically nap time. tests aren't impossible but they require a lot of studying. i study for probably 8-10 hours for the tests and my best grade has been an 82. if you can switch teachers..do it
Tough class but a nice teacher. If I study a couple of hours, I get Bs, but the tests are really detailed and the fill-in-the-blank is killer. Be prepared to study.
nice guy, but puts you to sleep. His tests are straight forward, but very detailed. You don't really have to read the text to do well on the tests, just study the power pts. and lecture notes.
face it, this is a biology class. He knows his stuff and wants you too as well. If biology is not your major, do not take him. He loves details and tests take a LOT of hardcore study time, but you will know it. Hint - if he says you dont need to know something for the test, yes you do!
I highly recommend Dr. McMullen for BIO 114. If one puts in the time, then one can definitely receive an A. He is definitely obsessed with the Galapagos Islands and plants, but this makes the class interesting even for those who are not as obsessed.
Great job!!!
SO BORING! Corny teacher! the class will make you fall asleep which sucks because you need to know all the notes and everything he says in class for the mini exams and exams which are very hard. Fill in the blank questions alot of the time! No need to buy the book. No HW, Attendace pollicy
good professor, but extremely hard.
Good class, take McMullen if you can, I got an A and am not even a bio major, if you memorize well, you will do fine on the tests, and lab is 40% of your grade
I've had Dr. McMullen for 3 different classes and he is always great. His tests are the powerpoints notes, so all you have to do is memorize that and your set. He is incredibly kind and helpful if you'll just visit his office. His Galapagos trip is absolutely phenomenal, DONT miss out on it. If you put in the effort you'll do well with him

Fairly easy class especially if you've had AP Bio. All you need to do is put forth the time. READING THE BOOK can take pull up your grade a whole letter, he'll have a reasonable amount of questions on the tests directly from the book. Memorize notes, his specific examples and you'll do fine!
very picky test questions....hard tests, but a pretty fun class. not bad
Not easy, but definitely not hard. Students who don't do well just don't study much, or haven't learned how to study yet.
Class taught by a fun guy. Tests a little too easy for average student. Should be in more detail, especially on life cycles. Those are so cool. But then, I love plants and such!
He's really nice and really funny, but the tests are inconsistent. One test will be easy with stuff all from the notes but another will be hard full of random information that doesn't test your understanding of the topic. Basically, memorize everything in the book, the notes, and his random side comments
McMullen tests you mainly on the slides, occasionally throwing in something from the text book. He tells funny stories, sometimes lets class out early, but has a strict attendence policy and his tests are really difficult.
All kidding aside, McMullen has been my favorite professor at JMU. His exams are very in depth, but they are fair. Attend class, study your notes thoroughly, and don't wait till the last minute for help. Enjoy his humor and study hard. =)
His exams are tough, but if you study hard you can at least get a high C/low B. He doesn't assign any HW and is chill about attendance (then again, if you miss the lecture you are kind of screwed for the test...) He's actually pretty funny in class - I'd definitely take this class with him over other professors.
I really like the guy personally but I swear he's got a vendetta against the student body. He tests on EVERYTHING. If you miss a class, skim a page studying, confuse two families, you're SOL. He once gave us a quiz with one day's warning and 100 questions! Seriously, take this class and kiss your sanity goodbye.
Not a very helpful guy.
If you are interested in botany and actually want to learn something then Dr. McMullen is definitely a good proff. I've taken a couple of his classes and while always a challenge, I always learn a lot. Also, I don't remember taking any 100 question quizes. Take him.
Goes off on tangents that he tests you on, not flexible with office hours, doesnt return tests, too time consuming for a 100 level course. Ridiculous tests - his reasoning for petty questions is that he wasted a semester of college studying to get an A on a professor's exam, so its "possible" if you study enough. Sorry, I like having a social life.
I love McNugget! He is an awesome teacher, and he does an awesome job of keeping his class entertained. His tests are hard but if you do a little studying you should be good, just don't skip class or you're screwed.
I cannot help but like McMullen, despite my C in the class. He's funny, but he is corny and random. There is never any homework, and he gives you all of the notes in powerpoint form beforehand. Just come to class, study the notes, and listen! Piece of cake!
How to pass: PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS, he quizzes more on random trivia he says during lecture than the actual course material. Other than that, he's a pretty funny guy, and willing to help if you come see him in his office. And he likes coconuts
I enjoy going to his class, he is an entertaining lecturer, but his tests are very hard - the book is helpful but most questions come from his notes, which are on Blackboard. He loves botany, plants are boring, however, at the end of the semester he lectures about his time in the Galapagos and studying the cocaine plant in S. America - cool!
Great class but quite difficult. No text book but he gives you everything you need and expectsd you to know EVERY word. Honestly, study everything because there isn't anything that is unimportant. He expects a lot but likewise expects that you can meet the expectitation. Not recommended for those looking to find an easy A for an elective.
McMullen was one of the best teachers i had last semester. yeah you have to work hard but if you study you will do fine. Plus he is a funny story teller.
This was a really fun class. It's a lot of work, but as long as you study and PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS you should be fine. And pay attention means write down every little example and detail he says or it will come back to bit you in the butt.
I had him at West Lib. While he tests on EVERYTHING, I think he is a nice and fun person. Don't take his jokes seriously.
This teacher is amamzing! He makes this class so much fun. It impossible to get an A in the class unless you read the book b/c he puts just enough book questions on it that if you don't read, you're down to a B. the last 3 weeks or so are all fun material. He's super helpful and held review sessions b4 each test.
Very boring class. Everything he says will be on the exam including the book readings. Good luck if u have it in the morning b/c u will want to slit ur wrists and write peotry. His jokes doesn't make any sense and if u do then u r pretty lame. He knows a lot, but the way he teaches isn't very effective(directly reading from pwrpoints).
what an awful teacher. avoid him like the plaque. ive never slept through any class in my life but ive remained awake through one of his classes..the first one. his tests are impossible and i usually do very well in school.
He is a very knowledgeable about the subject matter, his jokes keep u awake, exams are very hard. Has fill-in-the blank and multiple choice which are very specific to powerpoints. He puts just enough infomration from books that in order to get an A on exam have to read all assignments. Know powerpoints backwards and forwards. His lectures aren't bad
He's the MAN. 'Nuff said!!!
He doesn't test on the material he gives, but expects you to know random information somewhat related to the topic. I went to his office hours to ask him what I was doing wrong and he said "nothing, a C is the best you will be able to do. Studying more probably won't help". Don't take him if you care about your GPA.
Dr. M is entertaining because of his stories and dry sense of humor, but the material is dull. The class would be far better and I would take much more away from it if it wasn't so unnecessarily difficult. Very frustrating! You work your butt off to get a miserable grade and forget it all because you don't enjoy the material as you learn it.
Oh come on! Learning hundreds of plants was a blast. I now feel ready to brave the wilderness, or at least my backyard. Systematics of Vascular Plants has changed my life for the better!!! Peace oat.
Hottest hothouse!
Hilarious teacher. you don't really have to read the book. just write down every word he says in lecture and study the slides, but you have to go to class because he leaves some slides off. Awesome prof, got an A without much work. he's hilarious. take himmm!
Really bad professor. Plays favorites hard core, no interest in students, tests are designed to make you fail. (and he reads this site all the time, even admitted to adding good posts so to counteract the bad ones that REAL students leave.) Avoid this guy. Outside of class he nice though, lol.
Would not recommend to anyone. Nice professor but unrealistic expectations. Avoid taking, total GPA killer
Dr Mcmullen is one of the more enjoyable professors I have had in my four years at JMU. His stories and teaching style crack me up. His class however is very tough (his practicals are legendary). He makes you learn an incredible amount whether you want to or not but following the class I actually found myself, for once, enjoying plant biology.
McMullen ok professor, teaches really well, but often getsinto his own litlle world and starts to go on about his life stories. Test are tough, he believes that everything he says is important so take notes, THE TEXTBOOK is not needed youdon't even have to open it he has all of his lectures on power point and then gives them to you on black board
Do not take 114 with McMullen. He tests you on absolutely ridiculous minute things that he says in class that have absolutely nothing to do with learning concepts of biology. You have to memorize dates and pointless names and if you understand the overall concepts you will not do well unless you memorize every single word on his power points. Awful
Dr. McMullen is a very nice professor. His class is extremely easy and he is very helpful. The tests are not bad at all, just pay attention in class and take good notes. I did not think I would do good, but my grade in his class is a B+! I encourage you to take his class! He tries to make class fun also by telling stories, which are funny!!
Horrible. Worst professor ever. He does not teach, he just reads straight from the powerpoints and tells useless stories. He cares mostly about plants, but this doesn't help him teach that material any better. In order to get an A on tests, you must MEMORIZE the powerpoints and know completely random facts from the book.
This guy has OCD which translates directly into his tests, they are meticulous and far to obscure on the details and mterial being tested. They are not valid tests compared to what he "teaches" in class. do not take him unless you want to memorize powerpoints and have a lower GPA as a result.
he tests on NOT what the slides teach you, but what exactly the slides say. you never use the book, but he writes some questions from the book. he tells boring stories and expects you to remember them for the tests. yes, he tests you on his stories. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very very boring. You will want to sleep. Half-witted jokes are the only thing that will keep you awake. He's a nice man, but wow. Really boring. You must read the textbook because the tests will have questions from it. Tests will be either note heavy or book heavy. If you study well then you'll do fine.
OK class. Nothing special it is hard not to like him because he does tell some funny jokes while others leave you wondering why you woke up at 8AM for class...If you can get another professor do it, but otherwise he's not that bad. Multiple choice exams, the guy is nice just the material is so so so boring/doesn't relate to anything. Easy B.
He takes attendance every class! The clicker quizzes are not easy. DO NOT GET THE 8AM!!!!!! It is too early in the morning and all he does is go over the power points. He covers the material a week or two before the exams and then keeps going, so the information blurs together. Not an easy class.
AWFUL PROFESSOR. Talks solely about himself during lectures and cannot answer questions about the powerpoints. Tests come straight off the powerpoints but he will start covering new material 2-3 weeks before each test and teach new matarial so it all blurs. AVOID HIM!!!!
Lecture can be a bit dry but you have to go because (A. attendance and clicker quizzes and B. he tells you things that are not in the ppt notes). People complain the tests are hard but all you have to do is memorize the slides.
Horrible. He lets you know that his classes are only 30% of his paycheck and doesn't care. If your clicker breaks in class you are counted absent even if it is not your fault. His test are from the powerpoints but he picks out really hard questions on the tests. His class is the worst I have ever taken. Do NOT take McMullen.
Tough but fair. Easy to do well on daily quizzes, only need 10 correct out of the approx. 30 given to get 100% on them for semester. Exams are a little harder. Previous poster needs to change diapers and take a timeout.
Terrible. He is so boring. Lecture is pointless to go to but you have to go because he gives daily quiz questions and that's how he takes attendance. You have to get 10 right by the end of the semester. His exams are hard and he doesn't even go over some of the stuff. He gives you the powerpoint slides and doesn't add onto them very much durin clas
Mediocre at best. Lectures involve him reading powerpoint slides along with long stories that don't have much to do with the class (though some are interesting). He'll also throw out random fun facts, such as his middle name, and expect you to know them for exams...
He was so boring!! Dont take him too early in the morning if you can avoid. It was not as bad as people said but he was monotone. He gives you tons of info and people usually don't do well. Reading the book helped by reinforcing notes. If you start studying days ahead, no problem. He gives lots of fatherly lectures aabout poor grades too.
He seems like a nice person but it can definitely get way boring! Do not take him in the morning! All his material is on powerpoint but his exams are super hard anyway. All you can do is memorize the powerpoints but they have a TON of info. Dont even bother buying the book. Attendance is taken every day.
Class is sooo boring! All the information is on the powerpoints which he puts online, but attendance is still mandatory. If you have him in the morning, definitely try to switch because it is wayy too easy to sleep through this class
This class is so boring. Try getting any other teacher if necessary. He is extremely picky about the smallest details on his test. And he is obsessed with plants. However he does have the occasional funny story. Clickers used for attendance, you can only miss 5 classes or your grade is dropped one letter
Everything is pretty up front. All the information comes from the lectures, so you dont need the textbook. During lecture, he will give you a small examples that will end up on the test. Class is mandatory. He is awkwardly funny and tells lots of stories. The tests are is just like the power points. I loved his teaching style.
This class is very boring, but it isn't his fault. The subject matter is very boring but he tries to keep it interesting, although he isn't very successful. He adds questions to the test that he talks about in class but aren't on the lecture outlines. If I were you, I would just avoid biology altogether.
Doesn't seem to know all of the material himself. Has a huge ego, which distracts him from teaching but expects the class to still learn the whole subject. His tests are all fill in the blank with no word bank and asks impossibly specific questions on information he would state real quick on the side, not showing it in the notes. Do NOT take him.
The material can be boring, so if any other professor was teaching this class it would be horrible. He makes it fairly fun and interesting though. He is extremely willing to help in office hours. The tests are hard but he curves. He is one of my favorite professors! I would take a class of his again. He obviously has a passion for botany.
He DOES have a passion for plants. Even Peruvian drug lords couldn't keep him from his research. He (and the exams) can be tough, but his outer bark is worse than his inner bark, both of which are worse than his bite. The fruit lab made me happy and was the highlight of the semester!
you must know EVERYTHING he says. and you must enjoy fabulous puns. that is all. oh and you will become a pretentious plant aficionado even if you dont want to after any of his botany classes
Very nice man overall. Must know all of the details he provides in class, so try not to miss any lectures. Taking AP Bio in high school would help A LOT. Tests are hard but doable as long as you start studying early. Good professor, I'd recommend.
Dr. McMullen is definitely a nice guy. He has a quirky sense of humor and sometimes comes off as dry or impartial, but he actually cares about students and the material. The class is not a walk in the park. Take very detailed notes in lecture - everything he says is fair game on the test.
He HATES when someone gets a 100 on a test. Also he is crazy about plants so study hard for the plant test. Boring class, I recommend studying hard for the test and never miss class unless necessary. I only missed a few times and I regret it. Also he thinks he's so funny, although he isn't that funny...just be ready...
He is not a fair teacher at all. He was unclear about what would be on his tests and often put things he had said wouldn't be on them. He got angry about the smallest things and takes it out on your grades. I would avoid him if you can.
He is a very nice person. He tells jokes in class, but his tests are very hard. He makes it harder than they needed to be. If you do take this class, take notes because whatever he says in class...AND I MEAN WHATEVER HE SAYS... can be on the next test!!!!
Honestly a nice guy. If you have a problem, he is willing to work with you to make sure you're doing alright. He provides notes for his lectures but the tests include everything he says during class. There are a lot of little things that you need to write down.
Had him for 340 and really liked him! Nice guy, good teacher, very passionate about botany. I learned a lot from him and will definitely take his next class. Tests are VERY tough and he includes LITERALLY EVERYTHING he says in class but gives good notes and help so there's no reason not to do well! Plus he curves at the end if you work hard :)
McMullen is a nice enough person, and he jokes around a lot in class which makes it easy enough to stay awake, but I wouldn't take him unless you have to. His tests are EXTREMEMLY hard and literlly ANYTHING he says in class can be on the tests. If you study really hard you could get an A, but I'd recommend just taking a different professor.
Awesome professor! you will get an A if you just read what's in his notes(no need to consult books)and just write few things that's not in his notes online.
Dr. McMullen will easily brighten your day with his cheesy jokes. His tests are straight forward, but you MUST study the notes. He posts the notes online & you don't need to read the book. ANYTHING he says in class can be on the test, but if you just listen you'll be good. I've heard he's the only BIO114 prof who has all multiple choice tests.
Mr. Mcmullen made biology surprisingly fun. I don't know how it's possible to male the life cycle of a fern exciting, but he did. He makes a LOT of punny jokes, but just don't take him too seriously and you'll love him. He's good at what he does. A lot of these reviews say that he tests you on material he hasn't taught and thats not true
Dr. McMullen is an awesome professor and is very helpful. He is a great professor here at JMU. Take him! :)
Dr McMullen is an amazing man. I took General Biology class the first year he taught. I did not want to take the class but he made it interesting. Over the years I have learned many things from him. I would take a class from him again ANYTIME!!
He was very passionate about teaching the subject course. He would have all the notes ready and you would only have to print it out and highlight along in lecture. The tests followed the notes.
There are so many other bio teachers for this class you could get so make him your last option. He isnt a bad guy, but his test are really hard. If he said it in class, even if it was only once, chances is its on the test. Know your plants because he is OBSESSED with botany. Avoid if possible!
Take notes and study hard then everything will be alright :) Mcmullen is a great professor!
This class is dumb. The dude is obsessed with plants so make sure if he says them, you know them. You like animals? Tough nubs. You like bacteria? Oh well. We spent forever on plants. Tests are average. PLEASE study in detail. Go to freaking class, he says random things that pop up on tests. Good guy though.
Take Mcmullen for 114! 4 Tests (1 of them a final). Formula for an A: do not need the textbook. Go to every class, print lectures and highlight as he goes along, write down anything he says. Study those for the exam. Exams are basically word for word from the lectures and whatever he says. All multiple choice.
Mcmullen is an overall good professor. His class is difficult and you have to work for your grade. He loves plants and loves to know that you're listening to him. He often puts questions on tests that he mentioned in class and they're not necessarily based off of the notes. Prepare for tests a week or more in advance and take advantage of PASS.
Dr. Mcmullen is a jive turkey and has a good sense of humor. But BEWARE his tests are super hard and cover everything he goes over in class (every little thing he says, including his jokes and stories). Take notes on everything he says and shows in class, share notes with your classmates. He is a very punny person.
Dr. McMullencool dude! Lecture notes given, textbook-no assigned reading (do it anyway), daily 1? quiz, write down everything, even the tangent stuff, studyANDunderstand, ask?s. Not enough on animals covered, mostly botany (more PLEASE!). Brush on your latin, appreciate what you learn and enjoy some laughs! (Thanks Dr. M.!)
Dr. McMullen is the best. It is very possible to get a good grade in his class as long as you put in the time. He doesn't assign hw which is awesome but you should use the time you would be doing hw to study. Also it helps a lot to record his lectures and listen to them a day or two after class because you need to know EVERYTHING he says.
Dr. McMullen is a very nice and sincere guy. He's very approachable and easy to talk. His tests are generally around 70 multiple choice questions that he claims comes from his lectures, however, there are always one or two questions on each test that I have never seen before. I never opened his textbook so don't buy it. He LOVES plants.
If anyone says anything bad about this professor or class it's probably because they didn't put in the effort they needed to put in and were pissed for the bad grades they got. He's a great professor.
If you're not a biology major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He goes into extreme amount of detail about everything and you can't even compare this class to the other bio 114 classes. His tests are really hard, so get ready to study 15+ hours for each test. He is a really nice, funny person and knows his stuff.
Best and easiest BIO114 teacher there is by far. Lots of dry humor, but if you like it he's hilarious! Take him no doubt for 114 and most likely any other class. He loves plants so expect to hit that hard.
His test are basically his notes and lectures. Even the smallest thing he says during his lecture, it will be on the test.
Bio 114 is not an easy class but I would recommend taking it with him. He's a fairly easy teacher and gives no homework. His tests get easier as the semester goes on. He tests on what he says in class so make sure to take notes. You have to study a lot for the tests but I would definitely retake the class with him.
Dr. McMullen is so adorkable (adorable dork)! I love him!! He LOVES what he teaches! Go to class, write good notes on everything he says, and study and you will be fine. Textbook is not needed. Provides lecture outlines, but def. take notes. He is overall pretty clear on what he expects and tests aren't too bad if you put in the time to study.
Lecture outlines that are provided are confusing and tell you the bare minimum. Gone to office hours for help, got "the only way that I can help you is if I were to re-lecture it at you" Also, no one volunteered to be a PASS leader for the class so I pretty much taught myself. Studied for HOURS and got mediocre grades. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!
Interesting class but you must take notes and study hard. He does clicker questions every day but you only need to get 10 correct. Tests are pretty hard so the lack of homework is filled with studying
He's the only Bio114 professor that doesn't use the book and his content is very different from other professors. His lectures are very entertaining because he's funny and has a lot to share, but his tests are very difficult and extremely detail oriented. Write down everything he says, it might not be on the slides but he will test you on it.
I don't know how I got a D in the class! My friend and I both had similar grades on tests and quizzes but she ended up with a B WHAT!! I would not take him again, plus his tests are really hard. I spend hours and hours studying for his exams and I get Cs on all of them, then got a D for the class.
HONESTLY this was the hardest class ive ever take he gives you like 20 pages of notes for each test and youre expected to memorize. Get ready to hear about protists and a bunch of plants. So boring. also at 8am. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!!!!
McMullen is great. As someone who isn't a bio major and hated biology, he made it very enjoyable. Hilarious guy. Definitely take him if you can for lecture. He doesn't use mastering biology and has all the notes written up for you.
I love Conley! He's the man but if you don't care about biology, especially plants, you'll think his information is boring. Be interested in learning and attend class. Try to answer questions because when you answer wrong he kindly explains why. Have specific questions if you go to his office hours and use quizlet if you want a good grade.
Dr. McMullen is the bomb! He is exactly what you would expect from a biology professor; a little quirky, total nerd, super smart, but somehow makes lectures fun with his jokes and humor. His tests are not bad as long as you write down everything he says! I would definitely take him again. Textbook isn't mandatory but is helpful.
McMullen is a super sweet guy with a very dry humor and an extreme love of plants. His class is tough but if you study for the exams you'll do fine. I suggest rewriting the lecture notes and organizing them in a way that'll help you understand them. His lectures can get pretty long and boring but he really loves bio and tries to make it fun.
Dr. McMullen has the best dad humor and keeps his long lectures somewhat interesting. The class is only four exams and a final. Every lecture has online notes that you need to print out and take notes on while he's lecturing. Definitely record his lectures because his tests are literally EVERYTHING he says in class. Tough tests but great prof.
McMullen is great and his class was easy. Tests are straight from the power points.
This class is pure memorization and how well you are able to take detailed notes on top of the ones he provides you. Don't buy the book because never even used it! Go to class everyday because if you skip then you will miss a lot of information not in the notes he provides!
Overall a cool class but he could've made it much better instead of asking us to memorize the most random info and testing on literally all of it. I get memorizing plant names but who cares about books and journals and their authors? Very moody professor but also very funny and can be nice sometimes. A good experience but get ready to memorize.
Took this as a summer course. McMullen is the first JMU science teacher to really make me passionate about biology. So plants aren't my hobby, but I treated them like they were and got an A in the class. He is a really funny teacher who created his own textbook and is lecture heavy. I would recommend him and take another one of his classes.
He's a great teacher & cares about his students a lot. If you show him you care and want to learn, he will help you. He's pretty funny but you have to take notes from his lectures and slideshows but its all online and most of his quizzes and exams are from that.
Conley McMullen is one of the most amazing men ever!!! Great professor and hysterical sense of humor!!
McMullen is the SWEETEST GUY!! He's funny, nice, and really really loves what he does. not to mention he's a cute little old man. Every class is a lecture, and he does his best to keep it light and bright, but it gets super boring... not difficult information though. Overall, easy course and fun teacher.
McMullen was a great professor and has a lot of stories to tell. He teaches the material in all lecture so you have to attend class. Seeing him in office hours or in study sessions is a good idea.
Took him originally for BIO114, had him again for BIO486. Is an alright guy, jokes are funny but sometimes pushes the line, can be extremely rude and moody. This class is 100% memorization and incredibly difficult. Hasn't updated his powerpoint slides since before 2012 and gives weekly quizzes you WILL fail unless you come prepared.
Class is about Galapagos. No access to powerpoints, even to study for exams. Wordy powerpoints and anything he says is fair game for exam with no study guide. Exam is lengthy. Photos for species identification are not provided to help study for exam (photos not on internet). Don't feel like he cares if you succeed or not.
He is very knowledgeable of the Galapagos since he has done years of research there. No mandatory books, just recommended. Dense lectures, which is almost all on the exams, but if you study enough a head of time you should do alright. Very helpful in office hours. Making your own study guides really helps reinforce the info. Easy quiz each class
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! This class is all about the galapagos islands. He makes you memorize tons of scientific names of plants. You have to memorize what islands they are on and you have to recognize pictures of plants, which he does not provide. Worst class I've ever taken! I will study for hours, just to get a low B or C. Way too hard for gen-ed.
AVOID this is not biology. You are given an insane amount of plants and animals and are supposed to be able to recognize them by picture- name their species and scientific name and where they are located in the islands. Its simply not do-able no matter how many hours you study. Not to mention his lectures are the most dry lectures you'll ever have
Despite how difficult this class is, McMullen makes the lectures enjoyable. As long as you go to every class and study the material at least a week in advance you will do ok. If he curves the tests, he does it by how many absences you have. Say you have none, you get 10 points, 1 absence you get 8 points, etc. I also love all of his funny stories!!
Only take this class if you have a deep love of plants and enjoy memorizing small details. Lots of notes are taken for the exams, which are extremely specific and any minor note mentioned in lecture is fair game. The class is centered on the Galapagos. I now know more about cacti than I ever wanted to know.
He is very lecture heavy. There is only 3 exams and a final. It's not really focused on biology as much as it is on the Galapagos plants and animals. You really have to memorize a lot of small details and random facts. Not too difficult of a class as long as you study in advance.
Get ready to learn any and everything about the Galapagos Isalnds. The man loves them. Nothing about this class is like any biology I have ever taken. It all focuses on the Galapagos. Be prepared to learn about a ton of plants that are not in anyway useful to your life. Tests are pretty hard..... He does have a funny sense of humor though
Absolutely horrendous professor. I took this class just to knock out a cluster and it wrecked my gpa. You have to remember every single thing he says and asks you quiz questions he says you won't know (because he never said it.) I'll give it to him, he's funny, but he does not care about his students success in his class. He sets you up for failure
This class is awful! It is completely about the Galapagos Islands, and has nothing to do with biology. Tests are hard and always 100+ questions. You have to remember EVERYTHING he says. Notes and powerpoints are not available outside of class. And get ready to learn a ton of scientific names of random plants. Avoid this class and save your GPA.
VERY HARD AVOID THE CLASS IF POSSIBLE INTERESTING TOPICS BUT I STUDIED FOR HOURS AND HOURS AND STILL GOT BAD GRADES JUST TRYNA HELP U OUT... BEWARE. Nice guy though I like him as a person.
Doesn't put in grades for the entire semester. If you ask what will be on a test he responds with, "sure". This is not helpful for students who suffer from anxiety or other learning disabilities & is very stressful. Reading the notes will obviously aid you in passing his three tests, but they're hard & quite frankly the information is jam packed.
This class is so hard for a gen-ed bio. You literally have to memorize EVERY word on the notes including random stuff he says during lectures. Mcmullen is a funny guy but you need to go to class to get all the information and it is all Galapagos which is so irrelevant.
Memorize everything. Copy down everything in lectures. It will be on the exam. Makes dad jokes and tries to be personable with students. He gave a lot of opportunities for extra credit this semester. Nervous about bad reviews but If you put in the studying and the work, you will do fine. Got high B's on exams but extra credit helped
this class was really interesting, even though studying was frustrating because there was so much to know. dont believe everything you read in these comments, i heard so many freshman in my class say they never studied and didn't care about the material, and those are the students with bad grades. grow up and study and you'll do just fine
Take good notes and basically memorize them before each test and youll get an A. He says he doesnt curve but ends up giving a lot of extra points based on attendance and class average at the end of the semester. Not a hard class if you listen to the lectures and take decent notes.
DO NOT TAKE BIO 103 WITH THIS PROFESSOR! I had a horrible experience in this class. Whole grade is 4 exams and pop quizzes. Gives pop quizzes everyday. I studied so hard for every exam, attended office hours, never missed class, asked questions during class and went to his review sessions and ended with a C. Content is boring and irrelevant. AVOID
McMullen is very respected and experienced in his field, and he gives great informative lectures. He mixes a lot of humor in and makes every class worth going to. While his tests whooped my ass, it was my fault because he gave us all of the information. Best Bio teacher i've had. Take him if you want to enjoy class and actually learn.
McMullen's BIO103 class was basically all on the Galapagos Islands. Lots of memorization of plants and animal species. Nice, but very disorganized prof. Don't buy textbooks. Teaches from powerpoints but does not post them online. Provides notes with fill in the blanks online- print them out before class. Mini quiz every class. Not many tests.
McMullen was a very nice and funny professor. He posts outlines to the lectures online before class. Best to print them out and write down everything he says during class because he tests you on EVERY small detail he says. Get ready to memorize tons of Galapagos plants, animals, and random facts. Overall, not too bad of a class just have to study!
McMullen is a hilarious and nice man. His class is based on lecture about the Galapagos Islands and memorization of the plants and animals. You can print out his notes beforehand, but they're all fill in the blank so you have to go to class because he doesn't put them on canvas. Three test and daily in class quizzes. Easy if you study!!!
Every class there is a quiz for attendance. EVERY SINGLE THING he says in the lecture which is very boring is fair game on the test and will be on the test. there are several tests each one several topics and everything is on them. so hard to study for and he will not help you. unless you love the Galapagos islands, do not take it.. ruined my GPA
Mcmullen is a great professor. If you just go to class and actually study it's a great experience. Every class is worth going to, not only because he's not kidding when he says "everything" will be on the exam, but also because he's funny and his plethera of galapagos knowledge is interesting/entertaining
McMullen is THE BEST professor I've ever had. By far my favorite class I had have ever taken... McMullen is the sweetest human, he tells the funniest most interesting stories and is such a humble guy. If you're good at memorization this class is fairly easy. Its SO much content to study and tests are very detailed but study well and you'll be fine!
Conley is a wonderful human being and I wish people would stop being so unnecessarily mean to him on this wretched website! Hes passionate about what he does, and even though I have absolutely no interest in being a biologist, he made the subject fun. He isnt a brutal grader and the way he nonchalantly tells jokes and stories is iconic. 10/10 :)
He's a nice guy who actually has some pretty funny stories. Just be prepared for a lot of studying because he goes over A LOT of material. Also, if you came just to take a normal biology class, you won't find it here.
Get ready to eat, sleep, and breathe the Galapagos islands. McMullen is a great guy who's clearly passionate about what he does and has tons of great stories. The class is dry and memorization heavy, but the dad jokes will get you through it if you pay attention in lecture and study a little.
Conley is a great professor and a great person. His Bio 103 class really isn't as bad as many of the reviews on here would have you believe. Just go to lecture, take good notes, and then memorize said notes. There is no homework and he uses really easy questions to take attendance daily/as a cumulative quiz grade. Definitely take this class.
DO NOT TAKE!!! McMullen is a cool guy who is passionate about the Galapagos, but his class is so uninteresting and unnecessarily specific. There is practically no learning in the class, just copy his slides verbatim and memorize EVERYTHING. Anything that comes out of his mouth or on the PowerPoint can and will be on the exam. save yourself
McMullen is a good guy but a bad teacher. You don't learn anything. This is not a gen ed for biology. This is a specific education class for the Galapagos. If you don't know the scientific names of plants and animals, you will fail the exams. Lectures are incredibly dry and hard to listen to.
well this was by far the most boring and dumb class I have ever taken. McMullen just is a bad teacher, his lectures actually put me to sleep his tests arent on his guided notes but on what the details of what he says. This class is way to hard for a gen ed and way to boring to even be a class at jmu.
McMullen is an incredibly knowledgable and genuine guy. Exams are literally word for word from his guided notes and things he talks about in class. Print them out ahead of time and write down what he says and the class is not bad at all. Purely memorization but if you put in the time it's easy. Solid professor I enjoyed his class.
He gives you the notes to print out before class and the powerpoints are the same with a little bit more info. Tests questions are very specific and you must know every detail. Lots of memorizing of scientific names of animals and plants. Overall, he really tries to make the lectures interesting and puts in jokes. Only 4 tests but he curves a lot.
He gives notes to print out before class to finish filling out during lecture. Can be a bit boring at times but definitely cares about the topic he teaches.
Hes passionate about what he teaches, but this is the most useless class I have ever taken. He doesnt teach a single real concepts, its just species after species after species of random birds and traits about them. I study harder for this class than my 300 level classes in my major and still only have an 85. He does try, but his class is so dry.
Tests are super long and super specific. Lectures are extremely long and boring. I can tell he's passionate about his subject, but it just didn't spark my interest. He does curve the tests sometimes, but it's because literally everyone fails. It was just too extensive for a gen ed -- if you can take another course, take that instead.
I honestly don't know what I learned - all I did was regurgitate genus & family names & random details that normally would be overlooked. Taking 360 before made it easier to understand because McMullen was not very good at explaining/teaching the material. His lectures are mostly him making weird jokes & making the class last as long as possible.
Dr. McMullen is very passionate about this course, but it is extremely hard for a gen ed. Class averages on exams were a C or lower, so he ended up curving them. Your grade is based off of 4 exams and daily quizzes for attendance. No textbook used. You have to memorize all info for the tests. This is by far the most stressful class I've ever taken.
McMullen is very passionate about his BIO 357 research, but doesnt realize not everyone shares the passion. He makes the class WAY too hard and doesnt realize its an elective! You memorize and regurgitate pointless information. The tests are very specific and you have to know every single detail from the notes. Attendance is daily quizzes.
Funny and passionate about what he's teaching but very difficult class. 3 exams, a final, and daily, difficult quizzes. You practically have to memorize the notes because the tests are super specific and cover everything ( he said he takes a question from each slide and there are around 80-100 questions on the exam) Low averages for exams.
This class is hard for a gen ed. Class averages on exams were low, so he curves them. Your grade is based off of 4 exams (at least 85 questions each) and daily quizzes. You have to memorize every detail of his notes for the tests and he tests on a lot of the obscure things that he mentioned to make sure you are paying attention. Hated this class.
Dr. McMullen's class was difficult to succeed in. He did not post lectures online, required handwritten notes, and went over material too fast to keep up. The test questions were oddly specific and he talks about the Galapagos a lot, which drags on if you are not into it. Attendance was not mandatory but there was a graded quiz almost everyday.
Makes class so much more difficult than it needs to be. Basic biology class, but tests us on every single detail from class and expects us to memorize it. Also gives a 1-question quiz during class so you kind of have to attend.
Not clear on what is going to be tested on. No study guides. He is very interested in this topic but wasn't great a making the important information stick out
This was the absolute worse class I have ever taken. He is a nice guy but expects you to take 90 question exams in 75 minutes and you can't go back on the question. I definitely had to put in a lot of effort and even yet it's still hard. If you can avoid this Gen Ed.
One of the toughest Gen Ed courses I have taken at JMU, and I am a junior who only has one more Gen Ed to take. Tests are at least 85 questions where you are asked specific details about information. He refuses to share the lifecycles with the class for some reason except for when in lecture. All in all don't him unless it is a must!
This class is insufferable. 3 tests and the final, and one quiz question each class that will literally ruin your grade. Fast paced lectures that are somehow so boring. Asks insanely specific questions about things you will never need to know in your life unless you plan on studying tortoises or finches or something. Terrible GenEd, don't do it.
Interesting how someone with a Phd, can be so bad so incompetent at pedagogy. No textbooks, no material. This is a class about his expedition to the galápagos island, not about biology. Avoid this professor, test of 100 questions in under 50 mins, filled with the oddest details. He ability as an educator is nule. wish i had good things to say
Do not this class, the final exam is 127 questions with 120 minutes. Lecture heavy and specific exams. He is not understanding of students, especially during covid.
Does not care about students' circumstances in the midst of covid. Need to realize that this is a Gen-ed class and student have other majors to that need a lot focus as well. I spent more time in class studying than I did with calc 3. Do not take this class unless you need to!!
This was the hardest gen Ed I have ever taken in my entire life. I had to put more time into this gen Ed than any other class including my major classes. He offers no accommodations for students and ignorantly believes everyone but him is wrong. The tests were timed and extremely specific. This is my first time ever writing something on this site
This was the worst class I've ever taken. The material covered and the pace of the class was way too difficult for a gen ed class. The way this class was taught is something I would expect for a bio major in their 3rd or 4th year and not for a freshman gen ed. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class.
Please dont take this class unless youre extremely good at memorizing and/or a good test taker. Everything everyone else said is 1000% true and I really wish it wasnt. This has got to be one of, if not the hardest Gen Ed at JMU. Even if its a requirement just wait it out until he hopefully gets replaced with a better teacher.
Every test was more than 100 questions that you had to take during class time. You barely had any time to finish and never got to see the answers. He has no clue how to use canvas either cause 90% of our grades were wrong on canvas. His class is basically just him talking about his trip to the Galapagos. Wouldn't take it again. Not an easy A
Dr. McMullen is passionate about the Galapagos and has some really interesting stories. His tests are detailed so it's important to write down everything he says. It's mostly just memorization to do well on the tests. It can be tough but he's a cool guy and he knows the Galapagos really well.
Really nice professor but tends to keep to his ways of teaching. If you don't understand or can't seem to keep up with his lecture he sort of shrugs you off and simply says keep trying. Funny sense of humor. Does do a timed pop quiz w/ one specific questions regarding the long lecture. Doesn't put exam grades on canvas so you have to calculate.
Not sure why he has any good reviews at all. He seems like a nice guy and he knows his subject well, but the class has almost nothing to do with biology. The whole course is about his trips to the Galapagos islands and very specific facts about animals and just all around useless information. Do not take this class!!
He expects you to remember small details from the lectures that he does not emphasize, so you will not think it is important. The tests are hard even if you study and its some of the only grades in the class, so if you do not do well on the exams you're not gonna do well in the class
McMullen is an acquired taste. I find he's a great professor if you're truly interested in the subject, but if not, then you may struggle to stay focused. Grade is based on daily attendance quiz and 4 exams, so not a whole lot of wiggle room for slip ups, but everything's honestly just memorization.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. Do not take this class unless you absolutely HAVE to. Only 4 exams and attendances quizzes everyday. Tests are more than 75 questions each and are extremely hard. Class averages on exams were below a 60. Powerpoints are 90 slides long. Very smart guy he just should not be teaching a gen ed class.
It is almost as if he is overqualified for this gen ed. He does not explain anything in terms we understand. He does not allow computers so you can't look anything up in class. You have a one question quiz at the end of each class and the grades are that and the tests. The class average was a 52 on one of our tests. Only talks about the galapagos.
Gives confusing lectures where the information is not organized well then goes on to give exams where he will ask questions on something he mentioned only once, or maybe not at all. Also refuses to acknowledge that if an entire class fails an exam, it may not be the classes fault, rather the professors
entire grade is reflected upon tests and daily one-question quizzes specific to the lectures (and doesn't let you use your notes). I took this course as a gen-ed requirement assuming that with an already basic understanding of biology from high school it wouldn't be hard. expects you to print out large packets for every topic discussed in class.
Only graded on tests taken in class. Studied for hours to pass an exam and still failed. The entire class failed an exam and he didn't change anything. Test on information not taught and on what things are not ex. "which of the following is not a type of plant" DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT HAVE TO IT SUCKS
Truly a good guy but do not take this class. Every class there is a pop quiz. The quizzes are the only grade besides the exams. The exams are extremely hard and specific. The entire class got a 50 average on the exam and he didn't do anything about it . Such a hard gen ed and nothing like high school bio. DO NOT TAKE!!!
As a human being, he's great, but as a professor, he sucks. I took this class because it was one of the only classes being offered for me to graduate. I thought it was going to be super interesting. I was wrong. This class has so much potential, but the entire class is just you looking at his vacation pictures from the Galapagos.
Although funny, Dr. McMullen's exams are all based off of memorization. The exams are only difficult because you have to memorize his powerpoints ver batum to pass. Your overall grade is based on 4 exams and a daily quiz so you don't have room to mess up on the exams.
Dr. McMullen is a great professor and is very knowledgeable on the Galapagos. That being said, the exams are HEAVY; you need to know the material on his slide shows pretty well to do well on your exams and they are a majority of your grade. Overall good class but you will work for your grade.
Absolutely loved Dr. McMullen! This class isnt easy you really have to work for an A, but overall very sweet professor. Enjoyed his class!
Dr. McMullen is a really good guy and knows a lot about the Galapagos. If you show up, listen, and memorize the powerpoints, then you're guaranteed the A. I learned a lot from the class, although I do wish it was a little bit less about the history and more about the biology!
This class was the hardest GenEd I've ever taken. Your grade is based on four exams that are all incredibly specific, and you practically have to memorize all of your notes, but even then there are questions that we've never discussed. Avoid McMullen if you can.
pop quizzes EVERY DAY and only other grades are tests which he doesn't update on canvas till the end. Spare yourself the headache and take someone else
Professor McMullen was a great professor. Ended up giving a curve for the class along with two exams so he does curve. There are quizzes every day, but you're allowed to not answer 4 without it hurting your grade. Really funny professor and cares about his students. Ask questions, he loves to talk about the Galapagos islands!
There is no textbook so everything you need to know is talked about in class, so GO TO CLASS. Your grade is based on 4 exams and around 20% is pop quizzes in class, but if you pay attention during lecture you should get all the quizzes right. He does curve the exams depending on the average, and our final grades were curved as well.
There are about 10 multiple-choice scantron exams AND daily quizzes. The information in class is important because he adds random questions about stories from class AND doesn't post full notes to canvas. He delivered the information well, is funny, and shows videos from his time in the Galapagos. If you listen and study, you should end with a B.
pop quizzes EVERY DAY as attendance and participation. The only other grades are tests which he doesn't update on canvas till the end. There are 4 tests in total. He does curve grades and final grades depending on the average, but his lectures are so confusing to follow and understand. He is always talking about the Galapagos Islands and animals.
Everyone will say this class is harder than it is, but if you take good notes and ACTUALLY study for the exams 2-3 days before you're set. Quizlets are most helpful with remembering his content. McMullen clearly loves what he teaches and wants to make class fun. Also most people don't study so if you can get a B, you'll get curved to an A.
There is a daily attendance quiz which is easy if you just pay attention. Tests are a little difficult because it is all memorization just based on his slide shows with a bunch of fill in the blanks. He curves most of the exams and class is solely based on his research trips to the Galapagos. If you like plants or animals this is a great option.
As long as you go to every class, take really good notes, and study for several hours for each exam, you'll be fine. Dr. McMullen is a really nice guy, if you are struggling just go meet with him and he'll help you.
His tests are insanely difficult and he includes non content related questions about stories that he mentions in class. He loves what he's teaching but he can be rude, I tried asking for help and he accused me of not paying attention in class. No technology and points taken off of tests if seen on your phone. Try and take someone else if you can.
dr. mcmullen was really nice and very knowledgeable! his lectures were always interesting and you can miss 4 lectures without it hurting your grade- the exams are just extremely heavy with lots of information you need to know. some questions felt like we barely went over, but i used a lot of quizlet pulling from my lecture notes and you'll do fine.
your only grades are 4 exams and attendance. If you don't go to class you will fail, he leaves information out of the slides he posts on Canvas so you have to attend. The content is incredibly hard, you basically have to memorize the scientific name, common name, and picture of every organism on the Galapagos islands.
Prof McMullen is a nice guy, he tries to make jokes and brighten the mood knowing people only take his class for a gened requirement. His tests are very difficult because you have to focus constantly lecture and study at least 6 hours for each exam. slides range from 50-120 slides of pure information that WILL be on the test. does curve most tests
Great professor but really tough class. he is very knowledgeable and makes class fun by telling stories. quiz question each day on what was covered in class so pay attention. 4 exams with a lot of info on them and lots of memorization. he is a great professor but you have to enjoy the subject and pay attention in class
Attendance quizzes don't measure attendance, they measure if you happened to memorize something that was quickly gone over. Tests are so difficult. You never know what could be on the exam so you have to study everything. If you miss class, you miss out on info bc he leaves some out of the slides he posts. Not the worst, but, wouldn't take again.
He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the Galapagos. He tries to make fact heavy lectures interesting, but you do need to memorize like everything he says.
Dr. M is awesome if you come to class. He makes lectures interesting with stories and his experiences. He has other courses that are much tougher though.
Dr. McMullen is AMAZING. I have him for Biodiversity of Algae and Fungi, and he somehow makes a memorization-heavy course really easy to memorize and very interesting to learn through fun lectures. He really cares about his students and is very knowledgeable about plants, algae, and fungi. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes.
I had to take BIO103 for my major and I am so glad I was able to take his class. He has one question quizzes based on lectures at the end of each class to act as attendance. Class just consists of lectures and test, but he is a really funny guy. Tests cover all the material, but as long as you go to class and pay attention you will be fine.
Dr. McMullen is the man. His lectures are some of the worst I've seen, and his exams are terrifying, but he's a lot of fun, and you can tell that he loves to teach. You will need to build or find study materials in Quizlet to succeed in his classes. Plant field trips with him and my classmates were the highlight of my undergrad.
I love Dr. McMullen!! He is definitely one of my favorite professors. This class is very quiz-heavy (usually has one once a week) and you do need to study for them at least a little bit to do well on them. The field trips looking for plants are awesome too. He is super funny and hard not to like. He makes Field Botany interesting.
Dr. McMullen was a very funny and caring professor. He tries his best to remember peoples names and really cares about teaching. His lectures were interesting and he tried his best to make the lectures light and not so intense. Attendance is mandatory for the most part but you are allowed to miss 4 classes. Exams are hard.
McMullen is a nice man and likes to know his students. There is an attendance quiz every class but it is graded on accuracy which is really unfortunate and idk why he does it that way. 3 tests, final, and attendance are your only grades. Lectures are long and get boring. He also curves tests. I wouldn't take this class again but it isn't the worst
Prof McMullen is a knowledgeable instructor who tries to make the lectures engaging. However, the exams are notoriously difficult, covering a vast amount of material. Attendance is mandatory, but the quizzes don't always accurately reflect engagement. Unstuckstudy AI proved helpful for study prep alongside my lecture notes.
Overall, okay class. Grade is only based on 4 exams and he does not drop any of them. Does not do a review or any prep for the exams, which are very long and cover even the tiniest details from lecture you might overlook. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches, but is not a great teacher and it's hard to succeed in this class.
Nice guy. Quizzes every class, mostly easy if you pay attention. Hard to pay attention though because the class is so boring. I studied for 8 hours for the test and still left having a mental breakdown. Also doesn't allow you to use your laptop for notes, so be prepared to spend a fortune on printing (96 slide long PowerPoints). Honestly good luck
He makes funny jokes throughout class but his tests are challenging and lengthy. If you miss more than 4 classes, he automatically fails you. Daily quizzes for attendance are fine, but keeping up with the class is challenging because it is so boring. Need a celsius IV just to make sure I don't fall asleep. I wouldn't recommend, nice guy though.
Great guy and very passionate. HOWEVER, if you are a biology major just looking for some bio credits, do NOT take 357 unless you actually care about ecology/botany. It is very boring and your grade is basically defined by a few very heavy exams. If you're up for a challenge tho, go for it. His lectures can be pretty interesting and fun sometimes.
Do not take unless you are actually interested in the Galapagos. Attendance is required, no phones allowed, and you HAVE to pay attention to his slides because the ones you have are incomplete. You have to print out your slides too and he doesn't give you any pictures to help you study. His class is so much harder than it should be.
Dr McMullen is a wonderful professor who cares about the material and his students. Class is difficult (long lectures, in-depth tests) but doable if you enjoy the material. Classes are either incredibly boring or incredibly fun. Prone to ramble and tell stories about his adventures in the Galapagos and elsewhere.
Class assignments are quizzes every lecture and 3 exams with 1 final. Exams are extremely difficult and hard to study for, theres not much material to study other than class notes and powerpoints. I do not recommend this course for a Gen ed.
Grades are based on 3 tests (60%), a final (25%), and quiz questions (15%). No tech is allowed—notes must be handwritten or slides printed. The professor curves to an 80 average at end of semester, so most pass, but tests are tough and you won't learn much. He's funny but boring lectures and doesn't really know how to use Canvas
As much as I found his stories interesting and amusing, his lectures were heavy with information. Attending class is a requirement, and no tech is allowed. Tests are strictly memorization of lecture material and a few readings/videos. Every test was over 100 questions of MC, matching, photo ID, and fill-in-the-blank. Not much else is graded.
Professor McMullen is one of my favorite professors I have ever taken. I did not like Biology at all until I took his BIO 103. His humor always brightened my day. The class is lecture heavy and takes a lot of studying, but i promise the experience is worth it. He also gives a generous curve at the end of the semester. Great Gen Ed option!
I received an 89.97 and he was unwilling to round up. It is important to attend every class as random things / stories he says will be on test. Talks way too much about Galápagos Islands.
I thought this class was great, yes its slightly difficult but take good lecture notes and study a lot for exams and youll be fine. I found his lectures entertaining, and he loves what he does.
Makes this class so unnecessarily difficult. Don't take as a gen ed.
The only saving grace is his charming personality that makes the lectures at least a little desirable to go to. Other than that, the tests use unholy bio jargon considering its entry-level nature and are next to impossible to study for. Do not recommend unless you're an upper graduate prodigious biology major
Horrible gen-ed, test are impossible to study for even with going to class and putting hours into he library, do not recommend
Do not take ever. The tests are impossible 30% of what's on them is never mentioned. If it wasn't a gen ed, he'd be enjoyable, but my god he tries to make your life hard for stuff that has zero impact on our lives.
doesnt calculate total grades until last week. MUST go to class unless you miss vital information that's on the test. test averages were 70-75's. TTh 9:35-10:50 in EnGeo, must study a lot. EVERYTHING he says in class / in notes WILL be on the exams. study. go to class. quizzes every class. funny as hell tho
One of the worst professors at this school. 50% of the material on exams isn't given to you during the lecture which isn't great given that the only grades you will get all semester are on exams. Too old to teach and will get sidetracked by his own thoughts for almost 10 minutes at a time. expects you to already know biology despite being a gen-ed
He was absolutely hilarious, I enjoyed attending his lectures and I hate bio. However, the exams are extremely difficult and you MUST make excellent notes (no electronics in class) in order to get through. He really does expect his students to know EVERYTHING and he is very upfront about that. Although it was difficult, I truly enjoyed his class.
He is really funny, but his tests are extremely hard. He also curves most test grades, which is really nice. if you are looking for an easy gen-ed, this probably is not it, but I have learned so much from this class!!! No phones or any electronics during class; he takes points off from your final if he sees you with any electronics.
Funniest teacher. Attendance is mandatory if you want a good grade, makes you take a 1pt 1 question quiz at the end of each class and has unit tests. LOTS of vocab and material so definitely take time to study a lot outside of class. Will call you out in class if he knows your name. BIG no cell phone policy, will take 5 pts off exam if caught.
Try keeping your eyes open omg he just rambles about random things. Slideshows are so informational but that's the only thing he has posted. ONLY QUIZZES AND EXAMS go into canvas. We do nothing else but notes. I pray for the time to go by every single class
guidelines say not to claim prof shows bias against students... but when a man literally ONLY picks on women in the class... you can kinda assume the type of man he is. if you actually like ecology, you will prob like this class, just wasn't for me. go to lectures, each one has extra info on slides that isn't included on the ones posted.
lectures about the most random stuff, and doesn't explain his slides very well. the only grades are in-class quizzes and the exams, which are super hard and covers stuff he doesn't even talk about. tried to give him the benefit of the doubt cuz he's older and nice, but it really doesn't help. good luck staying awake and writing notes all class!
This class seems like a normal gened, until you take the test. They are exremely difficult, the questions are made from every little thing said in class and shown on the slides. Prof. McMullen is one of the funniest people I've met. However, its close to impossible to learn due to the constant confusion, story telling, and rambling during lectures.
Funny professor, but the material is incomprehensible. The slides he presents are unorganized and hard to correlate to the unit or topic prior, making it hard to study and connect to previous knowledge. Too time consuming and stressful for a Gen Ed. Studying for his final right now and getting hit by a semi truck sounds more appealing.
Conley is genuinely the nicest, funniest guy i've been around. he is so entertaining and i would go back to his class in the future just to watch him teach. however, unless bio is your number one interest, do not take. the material feels like a 400 level class for bio majors, not a gen ed. tests make up 85 percent of you grade
The only grades in this class are from the tests and attendance quizzes. that's it. The tests are difficult.
I know you're reading this Mr.McMullen and I just want you to know that you are teaching a GenEd so I would recommend you take some time to think about how you present your exams. Why is not all of the info needed to do well on an exam on the slides, not even half of it. Also this guy is heavily against electronics btw Proceed with caution
Funny guy. Tests are hard. Daily quizzes but based on what you learned that day. Only would not take again because I do not enjoy Bio.
I love him!! This class is about his research site and he enjoys the content a lot, so everyone has fun during his lectures. Long tests that are word for word from the slides. No detail is too small to be tested on - go to class, make a quizlet as you go and you'll be fine. If he picks on you he likes you.
Legitimately my favorite professor I've ever had. Seems tough on the surface, but he's a softie. Cares for his students and passionate about what he teaches. Come in with a good attitude and he'll meet you with the same. His exams are exactly what he lectures on, it's just a lot of memorization. Success comes with proper time management and effort.
