Tough class, but he is really funny and makes an otherwise boring class pretty easy to sit through.
Fun guy. Makes class enjoyable to be in.
Good Teacher, funny, but can be an ****
He's amazingly clear and he keeps class interesting with his.. bizaar humor? Best Econ professor I've had so far.
Clear, concise, ridiculously funny. The tests are amazingly hard though
Hilarious teacher! Weird sense of humor. Lectures are entertaining and he plays funny clips from classic movies. Tests are somewhat difficult and slightly tricky. However, they aren't imposssible. He explains things very concisely and clearly and is very helpful during office hours. Review sessions just bring together everything.
Funny, weird guy. Makes relatively difficult and tricky exams, but the curve will help you get a good mark. Teaches somewhat slow at times. But overall, he's an excellent teacher!
Wow...for somebody who has won teaching awards, he's the worst prof I've had @ Duke. i don't mind that it's boring, but his grading is TOTALLY arbitrary. the poorly worded problems could be answered lots of ways, yet he's only looking for one. if you can read his mind, then you'll do well...if not, it is going to be one frustrating semester.

There are several things to know about Fullenkamp. First, he has a strange but interesting sense of humor that makes sitting through boring econ lectures a little easier. Second, he teaches on an elementary level so that everyone THINKS they know what is going on in class. Unfortunately, he kicks you in the ass with impossibly difficult tests.
Hardest, Stupidest Class of all Time!!! I'm a Junior Public Policy Major with a 4.0 GPA and I can't manage to get above a C- in this ridiculous class
Absolutely ridiculous! Most arbitrary tests of all time! You can study for 30 hours and still fail because he gives you an hour for a 18 page exam!! I got a 5 on AP Macro and AP Micro and cant get above a C here
One word: ARBITRARY!!! There are like 50 different TAs grading your test (never him) so a moderately good paper can get either an A+ or a D- depending on who grades it
HARDEST CLASS OF ALL TIME!!!! I GOT A 3.0 GPA LAST SEMESTER WITH THIS CLASS: THATS 3 As AND 1 F (GUESS WHICH CLASS THAT WAS IN)
Wow,I thought Orgo was Hard. This takes it to another level. You can study his stuff all you want, it won't help you at all on his ARBITRARY tests that expect a specific answer when 1,000,000 are possible. In a class where 100% of your grade is 3 tests, this is truly ridiculous
Why o Why did I take this class??? I've read the entire textbook 3 times and still can't get above a C. His tests are so unrelated to what he teaches that there is no point in studying. Its all about lucky guessing here. If you can somehow manage to understand the ambiguous, poorly worded test questions you might pass.
Surely his test are hard, but it's not because he is trying to make everyone fail, he is just making you go a step further. Everything I got form his class was extremely useful. Also, he records the lectures and posts very well explained answers to every problem set.
one word: frustrating. you think that you absolutely love him because of his quirky sense of humor and efforts to make the class interesting. you go to class and don't mind sitting through his simplistic lectures, and then you sit down to the tests and get absolutely rocked by his arbitrary questions. good luck guessing
so basically this class is ridiculous. he's funny but that shouldn't be the basis for taking his class. basically, you can study for days and days and it probably won't help all that much because the questions are so poorly worded and AMBIGUOUS that you might THINK you did well but he was looking for a completly different answer.
He's a really fun teacher during lectures, and always very entertaining but his tests are ridiculously hard. He wants to make sure you know the material so this isn't one of those tests that you can just regurgitate answers. I dropped the class.
Professor Fullenkamp is a funny and quirky guy who makes an otherwise boring lecture relatively pleasant. However, his tests are quite hard and are graded arbitrarily (you will have the same answer as a friend and get no credit while they get full by virtue of luck). Weed-out class; Nice Guy.
very funny
The tests arent really random and arbitrary. They are def hard and make you think, but more counterintuitive than complex. Go over prob set answers CAREFULLY and think of models for the WSJ (and go check them). You can def get by. One of the best lecturers and very accessible. make sure you look over your exam and check the key after grading.
He teaches you all of the basic concepts and models in clear, straightforward lectures, but leaves it up to the students to apply the information on the rather difficult tests. Lectures are posted on Blackboard, which is helpful as it's sometimes difficult to stay focused in class.
Ultimately, it is your own creativity and logic which will earn you a good grade in this class. Fullenkamp does a great job of explaining the material and is rather funny. When it comes time to take the tests, they are more tests of intelligence than anything else.
Tough class, tough tests. If you work hard and listen to his lectures you should end up with at least a decent grade, but definitely don't take this unless your major requires it. Good lectures that keep your interest. But the class is hard with a****ty curve.
This guy has the most thankless job at Duke, and the fact that I emerged not hating him is a testament to the fact that he's not a bad teacher or person. He tries to keep the class interesting with a decent sense of humor. In the end it comes down to how much work you put in, and anyone complaining just didn't put it in. I crammed and got a B.
Horrible professor. Gave impossible tests with obscure material.
Professor Fullenkamp is very approachable after class and during office hours. The class is tough, but redoing the problem sets and practice problems help in preparing for his tests, which are quite challenging. The tests are difficult because they test your analytical abilities, which cant really be taught, in addition to the facts from the class.
Fullenkamp is a very entertaining lecturer. He's very approachable and holds "Nachos" where he invites students to eat lunch with him. His tests are hard. You have to know how to apply the concepts to real-world situations. Re-doing the problem sets help a lot on the tests. But in the end, he curves a lot so that almost everyone benefits.
Engaging professor, really funny. For one class on PPF threw out packs of cigarettes and beef jerky. Rarely attended lecture, didn't touch my text, bsed my problem sets, didn't exactly work hard, still got a B+. Tests are hard, but grades fairly and curves a lot. DO the problem sets because they're a free grade (graded for completeness).
Although his lectures were overall pretty clear and entertaining, he had somewhat of a callous personality seemed to delight in our failure. He wasn't very helpful outside of class.
I hated this class. I quickly discovered that econ was not my strong suit. However, this is a class to weed out econ majors. I had to work very hard to get an average grade. The tests were dreadful, and the averages were never above a 50%. Fullenkamp is a good guy underneath it all; however, he's not as funny as he thinks he is.
Fullencamp is a great guy but his class is horrible...if you want an A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. it is definitely a weed out class!!!!!!!!! when i took it about 60/70 people dropped!!
This class is HARD. Impossible problem sets and unfair tests. At least he's funny, but you'll learn to hate him.
Fullenkamp is great at teaching the material but unfortunately his tests are completely impossible. In order to make a curve he makes ridiculously long tests. Assuming that you make it through the free response(which most everybody does) your grade on the test is completely determined by how well you guess on the multiple choice.
Why are all of you complaining? Granted I'm biased because I got an A, but it's not all that hard! Fullenkamp is really funny and I love his sadistic sense of humor. It's like watching an episode of House, except with economics. The tests are fine if you bother to look over his notes - granted they're cuved so it helps to be moderately smart.
My only complaint is how he did the curve. He split the class into two groups and then curved the group that didn't do as well up to the one that did. Thus, if you did poorly in the class that always did better (mine), you always got screwed on the curve. He himself is a really nice guy, though. The class is hell, but it is a weed-out after all
Fullenkamp gave very straightforward lectures. However, his problem sets and tests were very difficult. He always posts the answers to the problem sets online and studying the problem sets was a great way to study for the tests, which had similar problems. He posted all his lectures and notes online, which was very helpful.
A difficult class but Fullenkamp is an AMAZING professor. He is very clear and explains concepts very well. He writes up detailed solutions to all problem sets and exams, which were really helpful to learn from. You will learn a TON.
Funny in class, entertaining and easy to understand
has lots of office hours to answer your questions. his tests are impossible, however. he makes a test that results in a average 72/200. why make a test that your students can't take?
If you have the right study strategy you'll learn a TON from him and do well even if you're not smart. Go to ALL the office hours you can and be sure to master all the problems he gives you. He teaches mostly through the problem sets--lectures/textbook are useless. I spent 6-8 hrs/wk outside class poring over problem sets with TAs and passed.
Prof. Fullenkamp is the best professor I've ever had, regardless of subject/difficulty level. Econ 51 will be difficult, any way you look at it. Fullenkamp's tests, however, at least does a good job of weeding out the truly incompetent from the class.
Class is impossible. Bottom line: his tests are impossible, he's a total wackjob, but really funny. Don't go to class just do problem sets
This class is a weed out class. If you think it's even moderately difficult, it's because you suck at econ. If you have any idea what you're doing, you'll have at LEAST a B+
It's designed to literally scare most of the prospective econ majors into a new major. Test averages are around a 35%-40%, but the class is curved well. Fullenkamp is phenomenally clear and entertaining. Dont be intimidated! It requires work but is doable. Btw: dont waste time commuting to class, as the lectures are recorded and put on blackboard.
Pretty funny and smart professor. Hard as hell if you've never taken econ before. Amount you study the material has nothing to do with your grade. Don't need to go to class.
The class is undoubtedly difficult, as it is what it is: a weedout for the econ major. Fullenkamp delights in the course's difficulty. However, he is an excellent teacher who is very knowledgeable and helpful if you're willing to seek him out. Don't buy the book, and lectures have little to do with exam content. It's all about practice problems.
Don't bother with the textbook just watch Fullenkamp's lectures online and u'll learn a lot. The exams are VERY difficult (some questions near-impossible) and the averages tend to be around 35-40%. Grading is done by a combination of TAs and a random number generator. If a multiple choice question seems easy u've got it wrong.
Fullenkamp is the BEST. He is clear, knowledgable, and you will laugh your ass off in his class. Expect a busy semester though.
This class is terribly hard but at least Fullenkamp makes it interesting. If you're an Econ major or minor, you have to take it, and he's definitely the best to take it from. The class is more Fullenkamp 101, but he's awesome!
I've never taken 51 with him but his 181 is definitely worth taking! Very clear and a good combination of quantitative and qualitative learning.
His ECON 51 class is an example of a class where you get out what you put in. You don't have to go to lecture or do the problem sets yourself, but you would be well advised to. He is a good lecturer, but does not teach by the textbook. The tests are hard and material difficult to understand at first, but remember the class is heavily curved.
He make a HUGE change this year and we have to watch lectures from past year before going to classes. So the workload is doubled but I don't really feel it's necessary. I reviewed my notes and ps before taking midterm 1 and I got one point over avg. The second time I just went over my test and I got one point below avg. So I was really depressed
Fullenkamp is absurd. He is casual and relaxed although he completely knows the material. He sees through bs completely which is what makes him so great. Hilarious and entertaining professor that will ensure you leave his class educated if thats what you want.
Possibly the worse professor at Duke, makes you watch hours of pre-class lectures, does absolutely useless teachings during class time. Unhelpful and extremely full of himself.
Probably the funniest, most sarcastically awesome teacher I've had at Duke. Although it's a difficult class, Colonel Fullenkamp makes it interesting with many humorous examples.
Very good professor, class is extremely interesting and entertaining. One of the best professors at Duke. If you aren't willing to work hard though, you wont do well.
Everyone needs to take a class from Fullenkamp. He makes difficult material seem simple (though his tests are very hard) and keeps students engaged during lectures. You have to work hard to do well in his class and some people simply don't grasp econ, but he's very funny and EXTREMELY organized which is helpful when preparing for tests.
Hard Intro class, funny guy. Extremely intelligent but arrogant at times. Over all still a good teacher who wanted you to learn as much as you could.
Great teacher and hilarious guy - he happens to love making fun of students as well. Definitely a class worth taking but pretty difficult and tests on grading can be arbitrary. Don't bother buying textbook or going to lectures because you will get nothing from either
Prof. Fullenkamp is a really funny, very intelligent guy. His tests are near impossible (a 40% is usually around an A). The grading is very arbitrary and it can be frustrating that you only have 3 grades. Doesn't always seem fair. You don't use the textbook AT ALL so don't buy it. Also, you don't actually need to buy the newspaper. You learn a lot!
This class is rigorous and time consuming so do not take it unless you are serious about econ. However, it was very interesting and is a valuable tool to get students on their way down the econ path. Fullenkamp isn't the nicest most accessible teacher, but hes a great teacher. Lectures are done via video outside of class, which I liked.
Fullenkamp is extremely intelligent and the material for 101 is interesting; however, the flipped classroom approach is a huge time-waster and leads to a big workload. Getting a good grade is manageable but you have to be prepared to work for it.
What a boss. I took Econ 101 without ever taking an econ class in high school, and Fullenkamp's class pretty much alone convinced me to major in Econ. He is smart, engaging, and actually really nice. Put in the time (admittedly is quite a bit), watch the video lectures, and you'll get a good grade. Curves generously.
Great teacher but totally nuts. Pretty hilarious in lectures, making attendance worthwhile. The lessons are videotaped, so you watch them at home at your own pace, take notes, and then ask questions about them during class. Interesting format, but I ended up liking it. It's a lot of work, but if you do it/show up, you'll do well. Great overall.
I joined so I could review Dr. Fullenkamp. He is simply the best teacher I have ever had at Duke. Taking a class called Financial Risk Management doesn't sound too alluring. He made it extremely interesting and more than that he cultivated a fun and eclectic classroom. Every student at Duke should take a non-required class taught by Dr. Fullenkamp.
Amazing professor! Lectures are clear and he makes the problems funny and entertaining! He gets to know everyone and tries to make sure they understand the lectures. The quizzes are hard and you really need to understand the reasoning behind the formulas and models to do well. Take this class, you'll end up learning a lot and loving it!
I took this class to get acquainted with economics and see if I would like to pursue it as a major but Fullenkamp destroyed any chance I had at liking economics.
I took this class to maybe become an Econ Major but i'll likely be majoring in something else. We cover in 1 semester what other college students cover in 1 year, but Fullenkamp is gone for a month so we actually cover the material in 2 months. Prepare to have a ton of material, and if you don't have prior knowledge (like me), it will be very hard.
Tests are tough, but he offers a lot of practice and does a great job connecting what you learn in class to the real world. Top-notch professor that can teach you more than you ask for if you pay attention. Again, tests are tough, but there is a friendly curve at the end.
Econ 101 is difficult no matter what but I don't think Professor Fullenkamp's lectures made it any easier. TAs were not a big help either. You are going to have to spend a lot of out of class time practicing and studying. Lots of textbook reading. A problem set every week. Tests are ridiculously hard.
I didn't take 101 with him so I can't speak to that, but Fullenkamp is my single favorite professor at Duke. Corporate Finance is THE class to take if you considering a careerinterested in finance. It is a lot of work but you'll be fine if you show him your effort. Take a class with him before you leave!
Extremely smart, very willing to help if you go to his office hours and make yourself available. This was the hardest class I've ever taken, but that said, I plan to continue taking Econ and major in it. Good teacher, just be prepared for a lot of work.
Fullenkamp is brilliant but his class is very difficult. The tests are curved. He was also trying out the flipped classroom approach so we had to watch all of the video lectures outside of class and then in class we'd go over problems. I didn't particularly learn a lot from this approach.
It was a flipped class and it was really challenging. There was more work than all my other classes combined. Professor Fullenkamp is incredibly brilliant, but it's hard for students who have never learned any economics before taking his class. Interesting, but really tough.
I had Fullenkamp my first semester and it committed me to the econ track. Phenomenal teacher and a super interesting, intelligent, and funny man. He seems to be a polarizing professor, and don't expect the course to be easy, but if you put in the effort this is can be a manageable and exceptionally rewarding class. Go to the lectures!
I took this as my first Econ class and it helped me decide to be an Econ major! I was in the flipped class which was a lot of work but helps you learn a lot. Fullenkamp is hilarious I would definitely take another class from him. Tests were hard but there's a huge curve.
Taking Econ 101 with Fullenkamp confirmed that I wanted to major in Econ. The class isn't easy but definitely isn't as hard as people make it up to be. As long as you go to class and actually do the problem sets instead of copying the answers, you'll do well on the tests because they are heavily curved. Also, Fullenkamp is the man.
Dr. Fullenkamp is one of the smartest people I've ever met, he is so approachable and all around amazing.
The class is not easy, but with the right type of studying it's not hard at all. Fullenkamp is brilliant, approachable, hilarious and very clear about what he expects from students. I would recommend taking his class.
Fullenkamp is the man, but he almost seems too smart to be teaching econ 101. He's generally available at office hours and is pretty responsive to email, but his tests are pretty damn tough. However what you learn will set you up well going forwarded in the econ track
Fullenkamp is an awesome dude that knows a lot about econ, but is definitely not easy. Problem sets on the weekends take up a decent amount of time and I usually go through the set not knowing how to do half of the problems. Usually end up cramming before the exam to learn everything I didn't get the whole semester
Fullenkamp is a brilliant guy and great teacher. I was in the flipped class- his video lectures were clear and easy to understand. It's clear from how well-organized the class is and how much effort he puts in that he is really dedicated to his students. Tests are hard. Don't take for an easy A- take it to learn a ton.
Fullenkamp is a genius and a fantastic professor. Will take future economic classes taught by him. Very helpful. The book and his notes help in understanding concepts. Problem sets and practice problem sets for the midterms and final are the best way of preparing. Pay attention in his class.
I was in the flipped class and I would have to say it was a very meaningful academic experience. I came into the class with no econ experience, unlike many other classmates, but paying attention in class, doing the article assignments, and doing practice problem sets helped a ton. Go to TA office hours too, they are incredibly helpful.
Prof Fullenkamp was not helpful at all. His lectures are very boring (but important) and his problem sets are very different from his class. Office hours are pointless and if you can't understand the subject its not easy to find help.
A very smart and funny professor (def will take more of his classes). Class was tough, but doable if you seek help! Take the flipped class as their tests were definitely more 'straight forward' - this can change. Problem sets were graded based on completion. Didn't put in much effort (always studied the day before exams) but managed to get a B+.
One of those classes that no matter how hard you try you can still fail. Your grade may not represent how much you truly learn. I was in flipped, and although the workload was heavy, Professor Fullenkamp was always willing to meet outside of class. He's quite the character and looks intimidating, but definitely try to get to know him. Not an easy A
Great teacher, however very difficult class. Makes the questions on the tests and problems sets more difficult than they have to be. However, I do really respect him and he definitely knows his stuff.
Although this class is challenging, you learn a heck of lot of econ. Professor Fullenkamp is brilliant and always willing to meet- he seems very intimidating but is a great guy if you get to know him. It's very different from a typical by the book econ class- tests are all problem solving and applying econ to real world situations. Highly recommend
I wouldn't want to take ECON 101 with anyone else. Fullenkamp's lectures are very clear, although he does make inappropriate comments in class. Tests are extremely difficult and test application of models rather than raw material, however, I found hype about the course's difficulty to exceed the actual difficulty.
Fullenkamp is a great professor. His lectures are clear and problem sets hard but helpful. Though midterms and finals are kind of impossible, they have huge curves.(at the end of the semester)
Definitely not as hard as people say - you'll do pretty well as long as you thoroughly understand the homework. Not a ton of workload either: 8 problem sets in total, three exams, all application based. Test scores are ugly but curve is generous. He likes making tasteless jokes but lectures are helpful and clear. A course worth taking in general.
Professor Fullenkamp is truly a genius, and he is a wonderful person. You learn a ton about Economics in his Econ 101 class, but the grades can be pretty unpredictable. With such a large lecture group, it can be difficult to get one-on-one help, but he tries his best to be there for every student. If you're an Econ major, take the class with him.
Fullenkamp is hilarious and extremely approachable. A fun but difficult class, but you are given more than enough help to succeed.
By far worst professor at the Duke economics department. He single-handedly ruined my semester. Avoid him at all cost. Place out of Econ 101. You will regret having him. He's funny, but his videos are not very clear, his grading is extremely arbitrary, and does not motivate students to learn more. Rather, he dissuades students to continue in econ.
Funny dude, wasn't afraid to make some crude jokes in class. First word out of his mouth on the first lecture was an f-bomb. Assigned a problem set every week, graded by completion. Both the set and tests were somewhat arbitrary, extremely open-ended, based entirely on the Wall Street Journal. Tests were brutal but the curve was extremely generous
Has a way of really concisely and clearly walking you through concepts you'll have spent ages grappling with (if going into banking). Gives you a really thorough understanding of all the core/basics. Fair grader/tester for quizzes and exams. But hard to impress on papers. That said, put in the work and you'll get a great grade.
Professor Fullenkamp is truly a genious, but I personally didn't like the style of the class, which is flipped. The videos we had to watch before class were unclear and boring, and the lectures were spent analysing through Economics models real-life situations, but none of us knew how to do it. I didn't learn a lot either, but he's he's a nice guy.
I took the lecture class. Fullenkamp is a genius and I loved the class and learned a ton. However, it was very difficult. Go to lecture or you will not pass. I cannot say that enough. Also, meet with the TAs regularly and take the problem sets seriously. It's a tough class, but you'll be glad you took it. Also, the month off in the middle is great.
Was in flipped class so was a lot of time outside of class watching lectures. Super challenging and abstract but 10/10 know 100x more about econ than I did before. Definitely would take class and professor again.
The level of difficulty of his class compared to an intro econ class anywhere else is absurd. Really funny guy but a terrible teacher. Had to spend lots of time outside class watching his lectures, but he still made impossible questions that only he knew how to do. Average scores on tests were as low as 30%, and on the final was about 50%. Insane.
Fullenkamp carries quite a reputation. However, he is an incredibly talented teacher, and you will learn quite a lot of economics in a semester. The class is on a curve as the average on every test is an F. The tests also constitute nearly your entire grade. That said, I wouldn't want to have ECON 101 with anyone else.
Flipped class, lots of videos, no discussion, two midterms and a final exam.
Professor Fullenkamp once leaned over to pick something up and I was met with his bald, knowledge-packed head 3 inches from my face. It was a spiritual revelation. He's also brilliant, hilarious, and designs lectures to make you truly THINK. It's one of the most educating classes at Duke, but prepare to WORK for it!
Fullenkamp's class is very much application based. In our flipped class, we watched videos of him teaching the concepts and then spent class time discussing problems. He would give us WSJ articles to read and we would analyze them together in class. Really grounds these abstract economics concepts and helps you work through them.
Smartest and most entertaining economics professor at Duke. Defiantly worth taking any class he teaches so long as you are actually interested in understanding the subject and willing to put in the time. Can be a bit intimidating but really does mean well.
Most complained about course at Duke. Not sure why he makes it so hard. It was a struggle. I do not know many people who received A's in the course.
This is not only the best class I took in this semester, but during my whole bachelor (Senior). Fullenkamp makes the difference. He's always ready to teach. He introduces the topics in a very approachable way. With real world examples, it's easy to see how useful this class is. The weekly workload allows you to stay on top of the material. 10/10
Professor Fullenkamp is one of the coolest people at Duke. He can easily see through bs so don't try to tell him you actually enjoy economics if you just want to be an investment banker. You can tell he really cares about his students because he holds office hours twice a week, unlike most high ranking professors. Take this class for sure!!!
Dr. Fullenkamp's brilliant way of teaching economics will make you THINK in a completely different way. He is accessible and always happy to help - but don't waste his time with silly questions about the problem sets. It's a time-consuming class, but worth every second. Yow, you are getting the best returns on your investment if you take his class
Fullenkamp is absolutely hilarious. He makes classes interesting. He also takes the time to get to know his students even though it's a large introductory lecture. This class isn't as hard as people make it out to be but it's still difficult. I would not recommend it unless you are considering becoming an econ major.
Probably the hardest class ever taken at Duke, but learned a ton about econ. His class is so very different from others because he doesn't teach based on textbooks. He uses real-world news articles as class materials and asks us to analyze them with economics models. Definitely watch all videos. Go to class and do all problems he gives.
Very entertaining lecturer. You will learn a ton about econ and how to think in an economic sense. Also will force you to read the WSJ and stay up to date with the news. Tests were kind of ambiguous but if you correctly use buzzwords and FINISH the test you should be fine. Great intro course teacher
This is an amazing class and you learn a lot of concepts in it, but you must be ready to work. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT GENUINELY INTERESTED IN ECONOMICS. You will want to cry. So much information crammed into really hard midterms. No one passes and there's a huge curve. Totally recommended if you are actually interested in the topic.
Very hard, very long tests.
expects a lot but it's only because he's a genius and really wants his students to understand the material. grades are completely based on where you fall on the curve.
Fullenkamp will make you know economics, but it might be at the expense of your GPA and dignity. Lecture can be rather intimidating: 250+ students in an auditorium, and not an actual lecture but practicing problems where you'll be called on to present in front of the entire class. It's a flipped class - you watch 90+ min of videos for each class
Fullenkamp is honestly brilliant. The man will teach you a ton about Econ. However, be prepared to work. Nothing is easy in this class and everything is earned. Write down formulas and buzzwords for the Midterms and Finals and go to his TA Office Hours for the problem sets.
Fullenkamp is a great professor and is excellent at teaching economics. The class demands a lot but it is very worth it.
Professor Fullenkamp is a very intelligent individual, but he can expect too much of his students, especially for a 101 course. The workload is immense since it is a flipped classroom, and the problem sets consume a lot of time. Classes are spent doing problems instead of teaching. Overall, it is a very demanding class, but definitely worth taking.
Fullenkamp's great professor who really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. If you're taking 101 take it with him. Lots of worked b/c of flipped classroom, but you will learn a ton of useful econ. Tests are hard and everyone fails but just do better than everyone else. The 2 weeks off in October is nice. Go to TA office hours!
His class is very work intensive and can be demotivating, but you'll learn a lot and get a refresher on world news. Hard class but definitely not impossible.
In this class you will learn only a new appreciation of pain
Great teacher. Flipped classroom, so you watch kinda long videos (around an hour or more before each class) and in class work through problems based on old Wall Street Journal articles. Fullenkamp is very smart and definitely one of the coolest professors I've had. This is kind of a weed-out class but you can definitely do well if you put in work.
he has a difficult and seemingly unclear teaching style but the group problems and online videos reviewing the material are really helpful.
I took this class when it was based on Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Watch the videos they are important and make sure to keep track because it is alot of work. However, as long as you take notes and study at least the day before you should pass.
ECON 101 switched to S/U grading this year, which definitely relieved some of the pressure. It was still a very difficult class, requiring multiple hours of preparation every weej (thanks to flipped classroom). Problem sets are graded for completion, so people don't really put in effort. Exams are hard, but there are low cutoffs for passing.
S/U grading scale helped with the stress of the class, but it is still very difficult, and you can pass without going to class and doing the participation quizzes online from your bed, but you definitely will do substantially better on exams if you go to lecture. Good professor, very smart, rushed curriculum though and there is a lot of downtime.
S/U grading 1st time. This was a MONSTER of a class, if you aren't serious about Econ don't take it. Flipped so you basically had 1.5 hrs+ per night of videos, articles, and problem set work. Lectures are skippable but content makes much more sense if your there. In all Fullenkamp is a damn good professor, just insanely hard exams and lots of work.
Class was Pass/Fail (made it easier). Some people love Fullenkamp, but he doesn't actually teach much. Reverse classroom style of teaching, so we have to watch videos he made to learn all the content, then in class students present practice problems. Not welcoming to questions, a little condescending. Knows his stuff but not the best explainer
It's S/U, which basically gave Connel free reign to make it super hard. Its not hard to pass per se, but if you aren't fairly serious about econ as a major or minor don't take it; its very time consuming.
I find it kind of weird that he teaches 101, because he's too smart to be teaching the basics of economics, and I'm pretty sure he knows that. The class is flipped (he'd be bored having to explain the material every year) and lectures are spent working on and explaining problems based on articles from the WSJ, which was pretty cool.
Fullenkamp is definitely a tough professor, especially considering that it's a 101 level class. But, it isn't exactly super difficult to pass the class (as long as you surpass 7% of your classmates, you should be fine). Your grade is super reliant on tests, so study hard for those. In-person and video lectures tend to be lowkey kinda useless
Not hard to pass, but just a pain in the butt because it's flipped. You'll spend a lot of time going through long video lectures and doing problem sets. Connel is brilliant (prob too smart to teach 101, sometimes condescending), engaging, and does a good job of applying concepts to real life. Make use of TA hours and prepare for hard exams.
Dr. Fullenkamp is incredible. He is so, so smart and very respected in the field. The structure of this course (flipped classroom) creates a lot of work since you have to watch recorded lectures to prepare for class. In class, you apply the material to ideas discussed in Wall Street Journal articles which keeps things interesting.
Fullenkamp is a very funny teacher and likes to crack jokes during his lectures - keeping the classes amusing. However, because he is so smart he often thinks that everyone is at the same level as him. Because of this it is hard to actually understand a lot of the concepts no matter how hard you try to concentrate during the lectures.
Yes, he teaches the class at a much higher level than usual for a 101 class. But Fullenkamp is kind and willing to help those struggling after class, during office hours, and by appointment. His lectures are thoughtful and eye-opening, and if you complain about being lost without ever reaching out to work with him, that's on you.
I took this course online so all of the lectures were through Warpwire. He's not always the best at explaining basic concepts, so if you've never had any exposure to econ, definitely look for some outside resources at the beginning to get a feel for things. Class periods are useful and he has students come up to explain things if they volunteer.
Genuinely the hardest class I have ever had. Flipped classrooms are a real nightmare tbh. Professor Fullenkamp was hilarious and explained concepts relatively well, but i don't think this class accounts for remote students well, especially the problem sets, as since we're online we can't cooperate with other student. Otherwise, should be alright.
Prof. Fullenkamp is a really funny professor and his lectures often contain quirky lines and curse words. Class was S/U and used a flipped classroom. Class requires a lot of work, but learned more in this class than I ever have before.
Honestly my favorite class this semester. Fullenkamp's lectures really make you think, and the daily WSJ articles are such a cool way of seeing economic concepts in real life. He's super willing to answer questions both in and out of class. Even if you're not dead set econ, I would still recommend taking the class because you learn so much!
Took this class in the fall and at the time thought it was really stressful. Looking back, I actually really miss Fullenkamp! He's very fair about grading and understands how to run a class functionally (unfortunately you don't get that a lot at Duke). Definitely take since it's pass/fail right now!
I skipped 101 so it was my first class with him. He's hilarious, makes the lectures interesting, and knows his stuff. The class was weirdly organized this sem, with recorded lectures to watch at home and only discussions in class about the readings. Graded pretty easily though.
Fullenkamp was really funny and always nice. Definitely was a pleasure to have as a professor on account of his presence. But, I definitely have to say that I would never want to have him as a professor again. Econ 101 will kick your ass for sure. It's an easy class to pass but the exams are killer, problem sets are tedious, and videos are boring.
Excellent and inspiring professor! Econ 101 was a really easy class to pass (only about 3% of people don't) and if you just watch the videos and gain n elementary understanding of the material you should be fine. Fullenkamp was simply amazing, with the only drawback being somewhat difficult tests.
Do not take Fullenkamp for Econ 101. He is funny in class, but the course is awful, especially if you have no experience. You cover so much material so quickly (most of via videos before class) that it's difficult to keep up, and the tests are very hard. It is pass / fail, which saves you, but it's not worth the stress. Pick another professor.
Connel Fullenkamp is great and extremely knowledgeable but he is way too smart to be teaching econ101. I came into this class with no previous econ knowledge and it was really hard to grasp the concepts so quickly. It's a tough job because the class is so big, but I don't really like the flipped classroom. Luckily it was pass fail this semester.
Flipped class system wasn't optimal, but Professor Fullenkamp was funny and engaging otherwise, and the videos were engaging which helped.
This class has an insane amount of work for just one course. The tests are VERY hard. The flipped learning made it so pointless to even show up to lecture because we did nothing in class. Duke professors really need to stop using this method because its a big waste of time and theyre too lazy to actually teach.
Fullenkamps sarcasm evokes that of the Annoying Orange. The flipped classroom format is horrible. Between 30-40 minutes worth of videos to watch before each class and then lecture is pointless since nobody pays attention. Passing exams is not hard since the threshold is so low.
Worst experience I have ever had with a professor in my entire life.
I'm sure he's a nice guy outside of academia but Econ 101 with him was a living hell. He thinks us students know as much as him and his exams are impossibly ambiguous and difficult. The problem sets are also basically just open-ended nonsense other than the math. Attending lecture is a waste of time. Terrible professor that caused me to hate Econ.
Take the class because it's pass/fail, but don't expect to enjoy it. Just because is Econ101 is hell doesn't mean you can't be an econ major. Not hard to pass if you put in at least some work.
As a pass/fail class, its easy enough to pass. The problem sets are mostly effort based, so if you just check with someone you can ace them. He sets the passing curve on the tests so low that you are virtually guaranteed to pass if you have any remote idea what you are doing. I never went to class and skimmed through the videos. Only take if needed
Professor Fullenkamp is extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Classes were typically at least somewhat interesting. Because of the flipped class format, there is a significant amount of homework. ECON 101 is easy to pass with minimal effort but is more interesting the more you engage with the material.
The course is a unique take on weed-out classes. It doesn't deter people from taking future Econ classes because it is difficult but instead because it is so mind-numbingly unscientific it devalues the entire study of Economics. There are no lectures, objective lines of reasoning that aren't "market intervention bad", or feedback on tests.
Connel Fullenkamp is the GOAT. He gives a lot of work and the exams are unnecessarily hard, HOWEVER, most people end up passing anyway. He does a great job relating econ concepts to real-life examples which makes these concepts more intuitive.
Overall, he is a very enthusiastic guy, but not the best lecturer, and the style he utilizes is not the most effective. It's a flipped classroom model, but the content taught is not the most applicable. Taught on a pass or fail basis so no intense pressure to do well and very easy to get a passing grade.
FLIPPED CLASS FORMAT. A lot of work to keep up in class. New format so test every 2 weeks. Criminally hard. Overall, going to class doesn't help.
There is no doubt in my mind that Professor Fullenkamp is qualified to teach this course, but I think that this is where the main issue with his Econ 101 course lies: he is overqualified to teach an an introductory class and assumes that 350 college freshmen will be able to teach themselves the foundations of micro & macro economics in semester
Fullenkamp is a hilarious guy but I can't say his class is the most impactful. It's a flipped classroom, so there's no point in going besides the 2 days of the semester you're graded for participation. This man's videos, lectures, & small talk are really funny. And it's S/U :) Beware tests biweekly, LOW test scores, daily reading quizzes, long hws.
Ridiculously easy to pass the class, but you don't learn anything. There's no point in showing up to lecture because all the course content is given through videos. For context, I hadn't watched a single video since the 3rd week of class and passed, so all in all you'll pass, but it's hard to be motivated to learn anything of substance.
101 was pass/fail, passing mark at 12%. While it's low, exam averages ranged from 40-70%. He's a good teacher and cracks jokes, although it is sometimes overbearing. He teaches through a flipped classroom style in 101 and in some of his other electives which I despise, but he is an influential economist and you should take him regardless.
Connel Fullenkamp is an engaging lecturer, but his flipped classroom model can be hit-or-miss. While the class is easy to pass, you'll learn more by engaging with the material. unstuck study was a game-changer for my study prep.
Dr. Fullenkamp is too smart. I cannot understand him in class. He makes this seminar way too hard.
Fullenkamp is the best and smartest teacher in the Econ class. Has had an illustrious career that any Duke student would be lucky to learn from.
Econ 101 is an easy class, and Fullenkamp is a great lecturer. If you think this class is hard, you have never taken a difficult class before... If you attend lectures and do minimal homework, you will easily get a good grade.
Fullenkamp is one of, if not the most, knowledgeable professors I have had at Duke, particularly for real industry knowledge and practical skills. He is very funny, genuinely cares about students, and is a fair grader. Although it isn't over yet, I have learned a tremendous amount in his corporate finance class and recommend it to all Econ majors.
