extremely heavy reading: one large reader plus 6-7 books, all in a quarter. midterm/final: a killer! don't be intimidated, though. course was engaging; try it!
i've taken almost all her classes and there's no doubt that she's notorious for her intimidating exams and her thick course-packs--but trust me, her courses are worth it! her lectures are thought-provoking and engaging. you'll not only be amazed with her intelligence but indeed be inspired.
Connie was a great prof. She was very passionate about what she was teaching and made things interesting. Her tests were really long, but what you take from the class is really worth the effort you have to put in.
Connie is life changing. She is incredibly challenging. Pages long exams, even longer papers, but she will make sure you are well prepared, which you will be if you put in the effort and open yourself up. She is really fair, and it will boost your confidence to see all you have learned and accomp.
extremely hard midterm. average of the class was a 42/80. Highly interesting lectures. Dr. So is a great teacher-she's very intelligent and has a great passion for teaching. Reading is heavy!
No doubt, one of the best class I've taken. Changed my view on Asian history. She's very smart. If you're taking this class. you'd better be ready to do a lot of reading and the midterms are LONG but fun
The test of a great teacher is whether you retain any of the information that you have learned in class a year later. I look back and realize how much I have learned from her. A brilliant and passionate teacher.

She's probably one of the best professors at UW. Very knowledgable in her subjects and keeps you interested every minute. Tests are pretty hard and the readings never end. One more thing...don't try and debate against her, you won't stand a chance.

good prof. knows what she's talking about. lectures are detailed so not always sure whats important to note...note EVERYTHING u can. talks a little fast but dont hesitate to ask her to slow down. cool person outside of class too.
good professor, always attentive to student needs when it comes to learning. classes are challenging. it is also a challenge to speak sometimes because she can be long winded and opinionated. but overall. her classes were a good experience.

She is so wonderful and if you ever need references, she is great at doing that for you. You just have to get to know her and take advantage of her office hours. If you connect, she will be your cheerleader for life!
lots of notes, but very easy and gives a lot of ways to get extra credit
Connie's by far the most inspiring professor on campus! She makes you actually WANT to learn. Her courses are challenging, but extremely rewarding!
She is very knowledgeable in her subject - ask her anything! The class is challenging, but if you put in the effort, you will learn a lot. She talks at lightning speed and writes equally fast so be prepared! Otherwise, highly recommended
Incredible. Midterm and final aren't easy, but she does give a lot of extra credit, and you walk out of class feeling like you actually learned something.
The only really interesting lectures were the first two given in the qtr. The rest are very vague and difficult to intake. It's more of a "fast-speaking", boring history class. One-on-one she seems very uninterested in helping her students. The TAs are MUCH more helpful and willing to help than her. The skits in class are fun to do though!
Very intelligent and well-researched. Interesting topics not covered anywhere else. Downside--only room for one opinion in her class--hers. Disagree? Prepare to be talked down to.
she is freaking awesome! she knows everything there is to know on the subject. the class is really hard, but you learn a lot. tests are mainly writing, so if writing is not your thing, don't take it.
Always remained enthusiastic about topics covered during lecture and created a positive awareness of the asian american community.
She's just GREAT. She offers you a different viewpoint. Great teacher, she really TEACHES you. Lecture is always inspiring and there is a lot of info. As for easiness, you have to care about this subject to get good grades. If you have absolutely no interest, dont take her, otherwise, she's the best professor. Best TEACHER! I learned a lot from her
awesome class!
She is an awesome prof. She knows her stuff and is really passionate on the topics she covers in class. She also tries hard to get to know students in class. Her midterms and tests are somewhat easy if you study her old exams. The only downside to her AAS 206 class is that you have a lot of reading to do.
In my own opinion, she is just overrated. I just have had horrible experiences with her beliefs as she is very biased. Not everyone has this experience however, and I find that she heavily chooses favorites. I'm sad I didn't have as good of a experiences as everyone else though :( two classes
She made us come in on a Saturday and/or Presidents day for a mandatory presentation we had to give the class. Reading is excessive. Don't take this class if you're not Chinese. Seriously. There's also a 12 pg paper AND a long final due at the end. fun..
I was just seating in for fun...it seem very interesting. But I will try to take one of her class in the near future
i think it was pretty easy class. the exam is simialr to the pratice exam. i make mistake on my final paper and she extend one week for me to rewrite me. and i did earn a good grade.
I really enjoyed this class. Connie picked great topics and although the lectures seemed long, they were also interesting. Her midterm and final are practically the same quarter to quarter so just study the practice tests and you'll be fine. Overall a great class and I highly recommend it.
Professor So is amazing! Her lectures don't really hold anything back; she says it like it is. She challenges many aspects of current day Chinese and Asian American history. If you want a new perspective on things, this is the class to take. Awesome professor, my only regret is that it is too late for me to be an AES major. I highly RECOMMEND!
Unfortunately I disagree with the hype that seems to be placed on this professor. I'm not having a pleasant time in her class. She speaks quite biasly and favorites those who have taken her other classes. She speaks to the class as if we have ALL taken her other classes which is not true. Saying she is one of the best profs at UW is far fetched
One of the smartest instructors on the UW Seattle Campus. I gained a wealth of knowledge from her courses. I took both 206 and 210 with Connie. She is personable and available for help. Workload is HEAVY. I stayed overnight in Ode for 14 consecutive hours working on a take-home midterm, which came to be about 30+ pages - more than my senior thesis!
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you do get a participation grade based on how often she sees you in class. She's an outstanding professor and the reason I went from zero interest to an American Ethnic Studies major. She makes the topics relevant, and is ALWAYS willing to answer questions. Lots of extra-credit opportunities are available.
Connie is very nice but Lecture is boring. Just study everything on the old tests and you're golden.
She's a very good teacher for freshmen because it's one of those classes that get you ready for other college courses that might be even harder. I had a fun time learning the material in her class. Although you may have to sit close to understand and catch everything because she speaks very fast, she is always free and open to clarify.
Prof. Connie is very fun to hear from her. Enlighten, electrifying, and most importantly, willing to give time everyone to come in and see her for clarifying class material. I really do enjoyed her classes. Too, bad I graduated 2003.
Excellent teacher. I hope I didn't graduate 2003, so that I can have more classes taken from her. Very intelligent, passionate of her point of view, considerate of different views presented by students. I most importantly, willing to give time all her student if requested or shown up at her office hrs.
She's really nice and what she talks about is relevant and interesting. Tests are really easy and exactly the same as reviews given.
Really good class. Pay attention to lecture and prepare for essay test. Should be fine.
Her class wasnt an easy A. Read the book, and she is very detail oriented when it comes to the group skit. She has a lot of passion, and she is very helpful. Her class was a joy to be in!
Very funny and an interesting class to be in, if you do the reading and come to class you should be able to do well
Great professor. Lectures are always fun and her jokes are funny. Basically study her old exams and you'll do well.
Connie is one of the best professors I've had at UW. She is very passionate about what she teaches which makes attending lecture not so bad. 3.7 the class even when I scored less than a 50% on the first midterm. The class is just two midterms, and a 6-12 page final paper. Straightforward. Extra credit is also offered. Highly recommended!
Connie's a lovely prof (go to her office hours if you need help)! But I do understand why some students wouldn't like her (rambly). Make sure your skit doesn't suck, put some effort in your project and you'll do well! There's extra credit if you need it as well. She's lovely, and the course isn't too bad as long as you're interested!
Contrary to popular belief, Professor So is not as interesting as everyone says she is. Her lectures were boring and her overuse of "So anyway you guys," drove me nuts. Connie is a very nice person but a very boring person. I found myself falling asleep at a majority of her lectures. Definitely will not be taking her again.
Extremely tedious and boring. Not worth the two hour lectures. The class wasn't very hard, though. TAs will help you a LOT and if you study old tests, you'll be fine. That said, it is such a boring class and you'll find 90% of the class on facebook or reddit within 15 minutes of starting a lecture.
Professor So is definitely a very talented teacher. She knows how to convey the points through the articles she chooses and the lecture material she teaches. When I took this class, I noticed that a lot of the students who don't pay attention in class or read the course material, they do not do well.
Connie So is an amazing professor. I find myself comparing all professors to her teaching style and passion. There is no other Connie So. SHE KNOWS HER STUFF AND LOVES QUESTIONS. To truly enjoy your time, ASK QUESTIONS. You will feel her passion.
Good quality class! Took this with a lot of friends. STUDY THE PREVIOUS EXAMS! They are extremely similar. Reading was "required" but I never even bought the books and got a 3.9 in the class. Lectures are where you get all the info you need. Do extra credit and watch the videos! Good teacher :)
The class is very interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends just because the workload is extremely heavy. I honestly wish I never took this class. The midterm took about two weeks to finish and we have a take home final and a final paper coming up. Great instructor, but she could use better teaching/testing methods. Its really stressful
Connie So. What can I say? well her class is fairly easy but it is also very very very boring. Honestly most people just surf the web since she just reads off the slides. But her tests are easy. Overall she is just a boring teacher but her class is easy.
AES 150 was structured horrifically, we had no textbook with lecture 5 days a week, during which she would just read off of text-heavy slides. So's biggest problem is that she usually fails to discern what stuff is important or what her bigger points are, making the class feel really overwhelming at times.
Loved this class and learnt a whole lot, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lot of friends that are taking this w. you. LOTS of reading & work - 20 page take-home mid-term, 10 page paper, 20 page final... It'll kill you, I might have burst into tears once or twice. BUT I've learnt so much about Asian American identity. Connie is lovely!
This class was easy, as long as you know a bit of U.S. History, you'll be fine. Connie is amazing and is so much fun. Not too much work, two exams and one short paper. You gotta go to class though, it makes it way easier. Study the old exams and you'll get an A. She's also hilarious. Never a dull moment.
Probably the worst professor I had at UW. The exams are based on what she complains about, not what's actually important.
The course is at a very fast pace. The powerpoints are not posted online so attending class is mandatory. DO THE EXTRA CREDITS! They help you understand the content. She provides previous tests to help you study for midterms. She doesn't change the test questions so she's basically handing you the test. Great professor, awesome sense of humor!
Connie knows her material very well and teaches with passion,
Professor So is very passionate and prepared when lecturing for this course. Skim as many of the readings as possible (multiple simple readings that are important for exams and your presentation), do the extra credit, and start your project early. Other than that, it is refreshing to have a class that questions dominant institutions in America.
read Ronald Takaki and Howard Zinn - she regurgitates American history in one big pile of throw up. i feel like this class should be called "let me debunk the myths of American history" read the books and you'll be fine. lecture boring
Professor So's isn't interactive with her students, but she is certainly engaging. I have never fallen asleep during one of her lectures. To ace this class all you need to do is attend the lectures, read the main textbook, and do the practice tests. TRUST.
She's clear and goes through the content fast! She knows how to present her material in a way that's engaging and relatable. She has a great sense of humor and tells you want you need to know. Highly recommend her class for those interested in the race and diversity (& the REAL history, not the stuff Disney throws up).
Don't be fooled by this 100 level class, the tests are difficult and lectures are packed with information. Seems more like she is just telling you things instead of actually caring that you learn. Tests are pretty specific and you are required to know almost everything taught in class...
If you like learning a lot of information, Connie is your professor. She can speak about 200 words a minute, I swear. I would lose focus in class because she talks faster than I can write, but gives you enough study material for you to do well if you try.
Connie is so personable. She's a tough grader and doesn't just let you get by with wrong answers, she'll call you out. But she is so kind and I enjoyed having her as a profressor.
She's a great lecturer, but if you go into office hours for answers, she's not likely to give you the answers and point to a million references and resources. It can be frustrating. On the other hand, you can skip her lectures, as long as you have her past midterms with answers. She reuses at least HALF of past tests. StudySoup has everything.
The class can be overwhelming since she talks quickly and expects people to keep up with her pace. That said, she's incredibly open to conversing with people during class breaks and office hours. Really funny, smart, and well-prepared. Definitely one of the best classes I've taken. Just be sure to read, do practice problems, and come to class.
Connie is a great professor and clearly enjoys teaching this class. She goes off on many tangents and lectures quickly, but keeps the class engaged with interesting examples. The midterm and final are similar to past exams, so study those. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. Getting a good grade in this class is easy if you put in the time and effort.
Connie So is very nice and she knows her materials very well. You can tell that she's very passion about her teachings. It's easy to connect with. She is very flexible and willing to extend the deadlines. However, her exams are horrible and I mean horrible. It takes at least 2-3 days to finish and used up 20 pages. Writing it past final week :(
This class is interesting but it's trash. Long exam for no reason.
She gives lots of interesting examples during lectures, and if you can't remember specific information on the exams she'll give you partial credit for the bare minimum. You'll only have to read if you don't take good lecture notes. Be sure to askanswer questions to get participation points (It might be hard since the class size is large).
Connie is very personable and funny. Her passion for the material is evident in the lectures, which are always high energy and never boring. She also offers an abundance of extra credit opportunities. Take the class. She is wonderful!
I took this class thinking it was going to be super interesting. It was, the first few weeks. And then it just turned into her reading off of slides with huge paragraphs of info. You have to know literally EVERYTHING she lectures on. The syllabus makes no sense and overall the class and grading make me want to sob frustratedly. Would NOT recommend.
After taking her class, most of it is just lecture and prepare for midterms and final. The midterms and finals are fairly easy, just as long as you study based on everything she lectures on.
She's ok... for some reason she always feels the need to put the class down because we aren't good writers or don't write fast enough for the lecture slides. This could easily be fixed if we spent time working on the paper in class or if she posted lecture slides (she doesn't post her lectures) so we can keep up in class. Too much info
She's hard when it comes to grading but I honestly I feel like her TA's were more difficult. Try to make time going to CLUE sessions before midterms it kinda helps. She's a super fast talker so if you're taking her class I would recommend bringing your laptop. Also she doesn't upload presentations online so you must go to class.
Be prepared to take lots of notes. She is super fast, so it's better to read before class to get a general idea and be able to make sense of what the lectures are. It's better to use a laptop because she switches slides very quick. Also, she doesn't post the slides on the canvas so it's important to attend her lectures.
Dr. So is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. She talked non-stop 2 hours every lecture 200 wpm, debunking tightly held myths about American history, and never ceased to awe me with her ridiculous amount of knowledge on the subject. The way she explains things really makes you appreciate history on an emotional/personal level
Attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps. There's a lot of information, but she holds review sessions, sends out review sheets, and provides tests from previous quarters to use as a study guide. There's only a midterm, final, and a final paper. There's also a lot of EC opportunities so that's a plus. Cool prof. I'd def take a class with her again.
Connie is super nice and very understanding. Lectures are clear but long. She gives practice exams for midterms and the final which really helped me pass her midterms. She wants you to pass and gives a lot of extra credit. There is also a final essay in which she gives you the prompt at the beginning of the quarter. Did not start on till dead week.
Connie is easily one of my favorite professors at UW. Her lectures are long but energetic and interesting to listen to. She's so nice and likableand gives plenty of extra credit. There's a lot of material and she switches slides quickly, but you can use a phone to take pictures. Get ready to work hard and pay attention, though! Would recommend.
WAY TOO MUCH READING. Doesn't consider the fact that students take other classes besides hers. Doesn't have a canvas page, doesn't post lecture slides, doesn't record lectures. If you don't go to class, don't expect to do well. Does give extra credit opportunities.
Connie is the best professor I've ever had. Her knowledge and understanding of the material is vast, detailed, and the way she presents the information is lucid and interesting. She's really funny, really snarky, helping us to learn about the hypocrisy in history with a great sense of irony and humour to drive it home. Very nice and very chill!
AVOID IF YOU CAN! THE MIDTERM AND FINAL IS UNREASONABLE! She expects us to read seven books and a big course reader. Don't be fooled about the take home midterm/final. They take a ridiculously large amount of time. She does not consider you taking other classes. And she dismissed graduation as if that's something that happens every year.
She makes it seem like we'll be okay with summaries of everyone's presentation (each student is required to summarize an academic paper), but the take home midterm and final require students to read 500+ pages of academic papers. Very theoretical, difficult class. Connie simplifies things easily, but the fast-paced talks are not for everyone.
What to expect, 2 presentations, 2 exams (midterm+final), and 9-12 page paper. Presentations can run up to 1 hour (dw, she does all the asking and talking over you). Exams are very heavy material, expect to end up wth 20+ pages to summit. The essay is easy since you get to write about yourself. No research require, only use class material.
Great Teacher. Come to class
Her lectures can be super boring at times, but she has a good sense of humor. The grading scale is super generous, but she rarely updates grades. She bases a lot of her exams off of previous ones, so if you study, you'll be fine. The topic itself can broaden your perspective, but it only does it so much before getting repetitive and uninteresting.
Know what you're getting into. There's a lot of work (20pg midterm and final), and an expectation to go to the CLUE sessions. If you go to every lecture and take great notes, you WILL be fine. Connie has lot of interesting discussion about the SeaTac area and AAS immigration history, and you will learn a lot if you take it seriously.
Professor So is clearly passionate about class material and is eager to teach class each day. Heads up, she talks at 200 WPM and you better be ready to break your fingers typing/writing notes. Plus she doesn't post her lectures online, so you have to attend class or make a friend that will do you a solid and take notes for you.
Definitely my favorite professor. Super friendly. Lectures informative and time efficient. Just sitting there helps you absorb the material and context. Best part is that though her practice tests are long, they're 90% of what'll be on the test. You definitely reap the time spent studying for them. Skit project: pretty fun and she considers effort.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had at UW so far. She doesn't post lecture slides or recordings online, and so you have to go to every lecture or else you'll do poorly on the midterm and final. Also she goes through the lecture slides incredibly fast and there's so much material you're expected to write down. Don't take this class.
Connie is knowledgeable about her topics. However, this is the least organized class I've taken. You are penalized for not doing something that wasn't even included in the directions - no rubrics either - and expectations are vague. Doesn't require HW on a daily basis but the last minute stress (because of her lack of set deadlines) isn't worth it.
This was a great class. Yes, it was a little bit unorganized;however, it was not to the point that it affected my ability to score well. The entire exams are based on LECTURES. There isn't a textbook, so those who didn't do well, I am sure did not show up for class. Take detailed notes (helps to collab. via google docs w/ others) and its an easy A.
She's the best professor you will ever have.
For a 150-level class, the amount of knowledge you need for the two midterms is kind of insane. You need to know 220+ historical figures/events for each. Not just memorize, but REALLY know the who/what/when/why/where for them all. She does however give practice exams and extra credit. Okay class overall, but seems too hard for only a 150-level.
Connie's lectures are super energetic and the amount you'll learn in this class is astounding. It's definitely one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken at UW. However it's also one of the hardest outside STEM. For starters, YOU CAN NOT SKIP. Tests are based entirely on lectures, and she doesn't post them online. Also, do the EXTRA CREDIT
For a 100 level class for diversity credit, this is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Combined with 9:30 lecture for 2 hours MWF, every lecture is full of notes that you must memorize for the midterms. The midterm review sheet she gives is literally 200+ terms that you need to know Who, What, Where, When, and How. Way too much work.
As a sophomore who's taken pretty difficult classes here at UW, I can say WITH CONFIDENCE that this is the hardest class I've taken. Listen to the other reviews, I do not recommend taking this class unless it's some sort of requirement (and if it is...I'm sorry). Midterms insane. Lectures go at 200mph. No panopto and no slides posted online
Professor So is very knowledgeable about what she teaches. This can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that she is enthusiastic about what she lectures but bad because the amount of notes you have to take is exhausting. With that, the amount of knowledge you're expected to know for exams is ridiculous. Especially for a 100 level class.
The only two assignments we had were an essay and to annotate a document, so it was a very low time commitment outside of class. That said, attendance and note taking is absolutely necessary, and she goes through material very fast. Tests are almost identical to her past tests, which she provides as study material. Study those and you're set.
First off, I just want to say that this is an AMAZING class. You will learn a bunch, &if you're into social justice &/or history, you'll thrive. That being said, it's also extremely difficult. She lectures at the speed of light, &there's no going back to look @slides/panopto. Tests are hard. Worthwhile, but don't take if you just want an A.
Connie's AES 150 class was probably one of the most informative history courses I've taken throughout all my years of school. Be warned that she goes pretty fast through the lectures, so use a computer for notes. She can seem scary at first, but she's really nice if you talk 1 on 1. The final paper is on a very interesting topic and not too long.
Connie was nice, funny, and very passionate about what she taught. I 3.8 her AAS 210 class with extra credit. The class was about presentations. The in-class mid terms were easier than the take home ones, but beware-- make sure you go to class for the key ideas and vocabulary used by the lecturer and her and write down notes. Go to class.
Connie was very welcoming in the start of the quarter, but her lectures go by super quick and she doesn't record them. Some material can be found in the book she assigns. She uses email to give assignments and gets irritated and tells the entire class when someone is not following adequet college responsibility. Not everything is written in agenda.
Basically, show up, listen, and review your notes.
Connie has a very strong personality and likes to joke around. The 2 hour lectures are filled to the brim with slide after slide. She neither posts her slides nor panotpo so I recommended typing notes for sake of organization. Learned a ton, wrote a ton, final paper has a lot of freedom and I enjoyed writing it
Talks so fast its almost impossible to follow. Her tests are all random facts so studying requires an insane amount of memorization. Always in a rush and does not seem to make student learning a priority. Disappointing bc the course content itself is so interesting and important.
Connie So is a professor that truly cares about what she teaches. Her class and her exams are probably the most challenging I've ever taken. Not because the material itself is hard to understand, but because there's just so much to cover. Show up to class, and have a group of friends to organize readings. I felt so woke after taking Connie's class.
Connie knows it- from her A's to her Z's on American Ethnic Studies history. Unfortunately, her accessibility is not so comforting, and the bulk of the grade is on three tests- which, should you get low scores on, will determine if you pass/fail the class. This was definitely a hard class to take, and she never posts anything on Canvas. Go to class
Prof. So clearly cares about her subject and she is full of passion. However, if you are looking for a informative class that is taught with little personal bias on the subject matter chose another professor. She does not cite her sources in her slides and expects her students to take what she is saying as fact. Also she expects you memorize a lot.
Connie is very knowledgeable in what she talks about, but the way she lectures is very unorganized. Even though you can ask for slides, most of them are not as useful, so if you forget or take bad notes, beware.
Though it's an Asian American/Pacific Islander Studies class, you get mostly Chinese history, Asian history in relation to China, and an hour of Samoan history on the last day. She lectures too fast and provides way too much information, expecting you to remember it all for the tests without posting slides. Don't take unless it's a requirement.
Nothing about this class added up, one of the worst experiences I have had at UW. Would recommend just waiting till a different instructor is teaching.
This class is hard just because the professor goes SOOOO fast to the point where students are taking pictures of the slide since she doesn't post them. Be prepared to learn one subject of history in one class period. You're expected to memorize so many terms and her "review" before the exam is looking at old exams. FAT L with this class
Easy and funny professor. If you just go to lecture, and write EVERYTHING down, you will pass. Make a few study buddies that GENUINELY know how to study and are serious about their school work, and you will pass. She is definitely not difficult if you enjoy typing your notes, and while looking the projector is the best way. 2 Midterms, 1 final pp
Dont take her class. Very confusing structure, no clear guidelines. First half of quarter consisted of overwhelmingly information packed lectures and second half was purely student presentations. Hard to find motivation to go to class. Doesnt update her grade book, its the end of the quarter and she still only has 1 thing in. Youve been warned.
Connie is a great professor but lectures can be long with a LOT of content! Expect to learn a lot of history in 1 sitting & take TONS of notes (take pictures of her slides).U will be graded on only 3 things: 2 midterms and a final paper (5-7pg). First half is easy basic APUSH history, second half focuses on poc in US. Find a good study group.
While attendance isn't 'mandatory', none of the lectures/slides are online so if you want to get a good grade on the two tests, you should attend class. So also talks very fast and frequently skips slides. With that being said, her two hour lectures are always interesting, funny and engaging. She brings a unique take to history.
VERY unorganized! Grading criteria was very unclear for midterms 1 &2, and the essay. Lectures were very unorganized and many times people around me got lost because there was no sense of transition. She does not assign HW through canvas, only email so pay attention to that. Heavy on content, so make some friends and use the TAs. THEY'RE GREAT
Prof. So is passionate, but otherwise lacking. Her disorganization makes learning hard. She says partially or entirely incorrect things during discussion, then refuses to listen to dissent. Her tests are unforgiving & place an inflated importance on details because it might reward those who attending class. Self-importance and teaching don't mix.
Lectures are fast-paced and often contain irrelevant, out-dated information. There is an insane lack of structure and the professor couldn't care less about any insight which her students have to offer (her way only)! There's also no use of any platform (such as Canvas) other than Catalyst, which hardly counts since it's only used for grades.
Professor So seems to be more of a research professor. Her lectures are unorganized, a lot of the learning is on your own, and prepare to get roasted on your group projects. The way it seems where if what you say isn't worded exactly how she wants it, then you are wrong. Prepare to have discussions talking in circles and lots of writing.
The class is purely memorizing concepts and people. If you like memorizing terms, you'll have a blast with this class. However, if you don't like memorization, this class isn't for you because she doesn't post the slides since she is an old school teacher (doesn't use technology). But, she's a really great professor and cracks jokes during lecture.
PROFESSOR CONNIE IS VERY UNORGANIZED. SHE IS THE ONLY PROFESSOR AT UW WHO DON'T USE CANVAS. VERY UNCLEAR ABOUT ASSIGNMENTS, WORST CLASS EVER. Professor, please learn how to use Canva! we are in 2020!
Connie did use Canvas this quarter for uploading assignments, posting her powerpoints, etc. Since this class was online it was a lot easier. She & her TA's were understanding of everything happening so they canceled the final & the paper. Her lectures can be extremely boring, but they contain a lot of info, so heads up, but she does offer a lot EC!
I really liked Professor So's class. It was very, very lecture heavy but she posts the slides online. I didn't find the class too difficult, but I wouldn't call it an easy A. It's a lot of content that you have to learn, but the exams were open note for the first time. I'd recommend it! There are also lots of extra credit opportunities.
APUSH with a focus on minority exploitation. Awesome films, lots of writing, get that W credit! Dont do reading until week 4 bc intro to theories slides takes FOREVER. 1 required textbook, easy to read, feels more like a narrative than non-fiction. GO TO CLUE. Prof. So talks FAST thankfully the slides are on Canvas, however no recordings.
Fosters good conversation in class. She goes very fast during lecture. Our midterms were open note, which made it pretty easy, since I could just ctrl-f through my notes. The textbook readings were technically assigned, but I never did them. Take good notes during class, and you'll be fine. Watch the movies, write extra credit essays! Go to CLUE!
This is my second time taking Connie and both times I have 4.0 her class because it is online and she's more understanding. Both the midterm and final were open notes, and she provides sample exams which def helps because she selects the questions from there. The final paper was easy as well as long as you answer all her questions. Talks fast!
She is sweet the class is just more difficult then it needs to be
THIS CLASS WAS ENGAGING. LOTS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR EXTRA CREDIT. PROFESSOR SO GIVES LOTS OF CHANCES FOR FEEDBACK ON WORK AND ALLOWS STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN LECTURES. THIS IS A GREAT CLASS, ESPECIALLY FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS.
Dr. So is a good lecturer, but she isn't the most organized. She finds ways to connect the history we learn in this class back to Seattle history which was something I appreciated. We spend the first few weeks going over interracial theories, then we had to rush through the slides for the rest of the year because there wasn't enough time.
Professor So is a great prof. She is kinda boring during lectures but the material is interesting & she's sweet. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities & you're only graded by 2 midterms & an essay. If I didn't take her class during covid her class would have been harder bc rn we could take the midterms open everything and class was recorded.
would not recommend a class taught by So to anyone. She's the most unorganized prof I've had so far at UW: doesn't use canvas & you never know your total grade until the last day of class. Highly recommend doing as much extra credit because she only had 2 tests & 1 final paper. Messy lectures, Extremely disappointed and never take So's classes!
Lecture heavy covering lots of content but Prof. So is really knowledgeable and makes it engaging. She uses Catalyst for a grade book so you can see your grade despite what some other reviews say. Posts slides to canvas. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Gives a div. and w. credit which is great for freshmen. Content pacing can be an issue.
She's amazing! Had such a good time in her class and learned a lot. I think that everyone should take AES 150 in order to be an informed citizen. Down to earth and friendly. The only thing is if you want to get a 4.0 you have to do extra credit. It's plentiful and easy because you just watch a movie and write a reflection.
She seemed like a great person but as a professor she just droned on and on and it was hard to pay attention. Also her lectures always run long so if you have a class right after this one you kinda have to leave while she's talking. Overall if you try to pay attention and do the work you'll be fine. Also there's a ton of extra credit offered.
She is really great at explaining history in a compelling way. The class consisted of 2 exams and a final movie paper. The exams were open book and were just like the previous exams. Go to CLUE to ask questions to the TAs about the lectures because there is a lot of information she goes over. There is a bunch of extra credit too so take advantage!!
Prof So is pretty nice when you speak with her but most communication is with the TAs. Super heavy lecture content that will be on the tests and is only graded on the two tests and a final paper. Very easy 4.0 if you put the work in and theres ample opportunities for extra credit through the reflection papers.
took prof So for aas 210, and honestly she is a pretty chill professor. She makes her lectures feel more like a conversation and that helps. Not too "easy" but nowhere near extremely difficult. Great class, and enjoyed the discussion. Also Prof So is readily available by email later than most profs which is so clutch.
Literally just freestyles on your grade and what she decides to teach all quarter, but super sweet as a person. Lectures were difficult to stay engaged in because of the insane amount of content she tries to cover. Although TONS of extra credit is available so it's still possible to get a high grade. Communicate with the TA's for most things.
Dr. So is an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking AES 150 to anyone at UW. She is very, very lecture heavy and personally it is difficult for me to stay engaged in lectures but she is passionate about her work and wants all of her students to pass. Take AES 150!
took her spring 2022. Her teaching style is not for me because she tends to talk in circles and then makes a lot of her test questions specific to random things she may have said in class rather than the slides she provides. one pointer, make yourself known to her and she will be lenient and give u the benefit of the doubt with grading
Professor So was extremely unorganized in lecture, ran through an absurd amount of content way too quickly, and did not record her lectures. Note taking was difficult due to the pace of lecture and the lectures were all over the place. The midterms were worth most of the grade and were on extremely specific things with no room for error.
Lecture was hard to focus due to a lot of information in little time. Were talking about 100+ slides almost each lecture. However, she does offer past exams as study guides and a lot of extra credit. Control f is your best friend if you don't take notes or if you missed a class. Graded only on 2 exams and a final paper
Professor So seemed to be very unorganized and would blame her students if we got bad scores on exams. Her exams were extremely hard because the questions were hyperspecific about random history facts. Although we were allowed to have a cheat sheet, everyone I know including myself failed the exams.
Connie is 100% passionate about what she teaches and some lectures are enjoyable but she either moves so slow or way to fast so I feel like im missing info when taking note. Definitely not a hard class and a ton of extra credit if you're willing do to extra work. Midterm was not bad. Overall in lecture I find myself a bit unengaged. UNORGANIZED.
I love Dr. So's passion for the topics but the lecture format is tricky and there are lots of slides and information you need to know. Exams are tricky and very specific, we did get a cheat sheet but it still is tricky. Skits are very fun and I suggest doing the extra credit or your grade will suffer.
Professor So is lovely and passionate about ethnic studies however, her lectures run long and are difficult to pay attention to. The class is very dependent on exams and the final paper which are both impossible to get good grades on because although we are allowed a cheat sheet she makes the questions unnecessarily specific and grades very harsh.
Connie made the class super engaging, and the content was really interesting and valuable. The exams (midterm and final) were fairly hard just because there was so much information covered, but it was still a great class, and Connie is a great professor.
AAS 206 was great. Professor So was nice and offered so much extra credit that was easy to do. Her lectures were long so I skipped class pretty often. You got to use cheat sheets on both the midterm and final. There wasn't a lot of hw.
I didn't feel comfortable in the class and the test and essays are harshly graded
RUN AWAY!!!! Unorganized and unengaging. Do not take this professor unless you want your GPA to suffer. I studied for a week straight for a midterm with my friends, and she put quotes shown once in the slides WORTH 28 points for the exam. It was insane. The rest of the exam was easy, but she never mentioned studying quotes was important.
Do not take this course!!! Dr. So is a respectful professor, unfortunately, her class is extremely detailed and unorganized. The workload is heave, and the difficulty IS NOT DESIGNED to be an entry level class. The course is mainly graded on two test and one paper, which all becomes really hard. you will not pass even through study hard.
I am a senior at UW and I have not encountered such a ridiculous course load as 150 entails. The tests are contradictory and expectations are unclear for what should be known for exams. Exams focused on ambiguous/random quotes worth 28 points which was seen as an unfair curveball thrown at us. First midterm class average was 56 percent.
so so terrible. lectures are fast boring and unfocused. every class is a nonstop monologue. she does not think critically about her material. has not updated slides or material in 10+ years. exams focus on many arbitrary and pointless subjects. average midterm grade was 55 and she gave us no curve. avoid if u can.
Connie was a passionate woman but would not let anyone get a word in that didn't share her own opinion. She constantly cut people off in lecture and would be looking for the most specific answers. Lectures were two hours long and hard to sit through. Not a lot of required readings and grade only depends on two midterms and a final paper.
run away.
This class was horrible, the class is graded by 2 midterms and a paper, which is nothing like the sample exams she gives and she grades harshly. The lectures are 2 hours long and hard to sit through.
The slides were missing a lot of info because of the usage of images and discussion within lecture. She would throw in random quotes into the midterm we would need to identify after only seeing once. She grades very harshly on the paper if you use sources besides what she provided, even though the information provided was filled with holes
Connie is great. Be sure to be committed and show up to class. I would like to note that some of common criticisms of this class are unwarranted. If you make it a priority to go to class and pay attention she makes it very clear what's expected of you to succeed. Tests are overly fact based but consistent and predictable. Extra credit matters.
Connie is a nice person and will make a concerted effort to get to know students who participate. Although this class is basically graded based on 3-5 assignments, this can be alleviated with the abundance of extra credit she provides. Despite what people say, if you look at the provided past exams, the answers are the same or very similar.
I took Professer So's AES 150 class and the entire course is based on an 100 point midterm, a 140 point midterm and a 5 page paper worth 140 points. The questions on the tests are extemely specific and all from her past midterms, and her lectures are just her talking for a straight 2 hours and reading off of powerpoint slides, no hw tho!
Assignments are clear but few. Past exams provided for review cover everything (so look at old tests and ask about questions you can't answer at the Q&A review). Short essay on test gives choice of question. Don't be afraid to take this class. Views on AAPI issues were rigid, sometimes not room for new perspectives from students. Friendly though.
As a Freshman in the first quarter, I expected this to be a nice ease into general American history. But how wrong I was. The lectures were 2 hours long and she kept yapping, making it hard to focus entirely. She didn't give any homework, but the grading for her 2 midterms and final was harsh and unfair. Please don't take this class with her.
Lectures are dry and unengaging. The exams ask obscure, off-topic questions that aren't related to the readings or lectures, and require knowledge from other courses you've taken. Studying the assigned material isn't enough. You must take notes from prior courses (APUSH in high school saved me), researching unrelated topics on your own. DO NOT TAKE
Old lectures that haven't been changed in ages. She doesn't allow for conversation or people to voice opinions of their own. She forces her views on students through lecture and the few questions she does choose to answer. Tests are obscure and unrelated to class content. Grade determined by two midterms and a paper. Insane GPA tanker. DO NOT TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Lectures are overwhelming and are poorly organized. Equivalent to APUSH but harder. Many random facts need to be memorized for the midterms. Poor communication from TA's and extremely poor communication from professor. Many instructions are unclear and vague.
holy yapfest. she reads right off the slides, you don't even have to show up to lecture that's how useless class time is. connie is nice though and offers extra credit. there's only like 3 assignments the whole quarter and the exams are on facts rather than content. don't need the book, u can study from past exams- she repeats questions.
holy yapfest. the worst teacher i've ever had. she reads right off the slides for 2 hrs, u don't even have to show up that's how useless class time is. exams are fun facts and NOT in her slides. only like 3 assignments the whole quarter. offers extra credit. don't need the book. do not take this class
Professor So is the sweetest professor I've had at UW. She's passionate and she cares for her students to pass. Make sure you show up to class ready to learn and engage if you want a good grade.
was not a fun class
my list of problems that I have 1. THE QUARTER IS ALMOST OVER AND IM STILL NOT SURE WHAT MY FINAL GRADE IS!! 2. Very few assignments which could be viewed as a “good thing” but it's only (2 midterms and a final paper). 3.OMG the classes are sooo long and boring! Ngl she's nice and I did learn a lot but she mostly yaps on and on and on. RUN PLEASE!
Great professor, knows so much history so lecture gets off topic fast. 2 hour lectures are hell in this class but she does give a break. most history was interesting to hear but had nothing to do with the exams
one of the worst teachers i've ever had. 1) no structure to lectures. 2) yaps too much. 3) content is scrambled, and many times just her own opinion/experience. 3) does not assign any readings or homework but then assigns midterm papers and finals based on the readings??? 4) assignments have NO PROMPT?? and NO GRADING CRITERIA??
Class is unnecessary. She yapssss so much. Midterms and Final Papersare the most important assignments. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS OR ANY OF HER CLASS, RUNNNNNNN!
AES 150 is about memorization, you probably could not attend a single lecture and recieve a 4.0 just by memorizing the answers to past exam questions. The class is graded solely on 2 midterms and a final paper with some assorted homework assignments that pop up almost randomly. Textbook is only good for a few extra credit questions.
Lectures not enough information regarding assignments and, as for assignments? There is no assignments. Instead, there's a midterm and final, and that's it. The test include seemingly random questions, such as the names of actors. Pure memorization. For those with memory issues such as myself, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Unforgiving and unfair. Do not.
DONOTTAKE. She goes on tangents that seemingly have nothing to do with the course, but show up on exams. No structure in her lectures (300 slides per powerpoint!) and absolutely no assignments to boost your grade besides LONG extra credit assignments. Learned more from the TA's friday classes than Dr. So's lectures.
Professor So is really nice and funny but the final, midterm, and presentation were extremely confusing and time-consuming. You have to read all of the books that she mentions but she didn't really make that clear until it was too late. She's not a tough grader though, the class and lectures were just disorganized.
Had a great experience in her class! Very lecture heavy, but the material is interesting and the depth of her explanations show her expertise and passion, which makes the lectures enjoyable rather than tedious.
Dr. So is very knowledgeable, and gives plenty of opportunities to succeed in her class. Unfortunately, the course is extremely reading heavy and the lectures are long. Although she tries to foster an environment for class discussion, she has a bad habit of interrupting students when they aren't sharing the exact answer she was thinking of herself.
Tests and lectures did not always match. Boring lectures, harsh grading, material more about dates and random facts than actual learning.
great person, tough lectures packed with info.
This class is very informational and ties a lot of history, background and communities together, and gives context about the extensive shaping of America. If you don't feel confident about specific dates and history, make sure to follow what specific lectures have been taught each week to know specifically what's on the midterms.
Classes were not very engaging, with long lectures mostly reading from slides. but The first two weeks covered no material and focused on what seemed like debating her students instead. Exams require heavy memorization of very specific details. Studying is time-intensive, but manageable once you get into a rhythm. All PowerPoints are on Canvas.
