Stupidly hard marker topics are beyond boring

WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. AVOID!!!

Extremely hard marker. Very narrow minded on how essays should be written. Participation is necessary and so is attendance. I do not recommend this class for anyone.

Extensive variety of texts to read; however they are quite absorbing. Mr.Scott grades essays incredibly tough as he expects a very particular kind of essay (close-minded). He has a rude and arrogant demeanour and is HIGHLY critical. Wish I could go back in time and choose a different professor as my semester has been ruined....

If your first language is not English and want to fail, go for it :'). He basically asks you to memorize everything from 1000 stories and a 300 page novel and expects you to write specific detail about that novel or story on the quiz's and exam. His 1 quiz is worth 10 percent, basically a midterm and you have to be very specific.

He is most cunning proff I came across. He is very discramatory and judgmental. His essay marking is very crucial and you get grades of D- or close as no matter how much effort you put he won't give good grades. Never never never take this proff. The pop up quizzes are like finals, and don't ask about finals as expections are like novel writers.

Comments on essays are not helpful. My essays got two B+ from another English course but in 102, HELL. Sometimes me and other students wonder that if he has already decided that, you are gonna fail. Just a reminder especially for students whose first language is not English, DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE.

Completely ruined my GPA. Gives no notes, yet expects you to do well on his Quizzes, which more so resemble midterms. The final was incredibly difficult, as he expects you to memorize the meaning/description of absolutely every single poem and shorty story you read, along with titles and authors. I really would not recommend this class to anyone.

Makes you read a lot and does not do any in-depth literary analysis. He is understanding but he seems lazy. He is slow in giving essays back. Does not provide clear instructions on how you are supposed to do assignments. You are just supposed to know it.

This class was a joke. He canceled the class 6 times last minute and even got called out by the Dean of Arts for it. We had to buy 5 books and we only got a week to read each one. His quizzes are hard as he will ask questions that don't even relate to the material covered. He didn't mark our stuff until the end of the semester. Save your money.

Handed in an essay and didnt recieve a mark for 3 months, cancelled 2 weeks of classes, did not prepare for class, spent class time drawing maps, there was no plan for any class, will never take a class with this prof again

Was late in handing back homework. Also a tough grader and doesn't give clear instructions as to how to complete the assignments. Overall, expects u to know how to do it.

My gpa was shattered because of him. He is a very tough grader and the quizzes he gave are next to impossible to do. Compared to other profs, they have way easier quizzes and are not that strict of a marker compared to this Scott. Wish I took another prof instead of him. Do not take this prof!

Imagine reading a new novel every week just for an engl 103 class, but due to classes being cancelled to not even cover one of the books and to only skim over the remaining 6. Maybe he had something going on I get it, it be like that, but 2 weeks of cancelled classes, 3 months to return major essays, drawing maps, obscure quizzes, Like dude wut?¿

Got essays returned after 3 months and did not inform students of their course grades until a few days before the final essay was due. He isn't very approachable and responds in a condescending manner that disocurages you from asking questions. He cancelled class for 2 weeks and did not have planned lessons for classes. Would not recommend at all.

Didn't teach anything in class. Just assign you to read everything at home. avoid him if you don't want to waste $500+.

Absolutely abominable. Makes you read over 50+ pages for a class, but doesn't actually teach anything in the lecture. Extremely unclear grading criteria. Gets immediately defensive when criticized for grammar, even though he is an English prof. ENGL 199 is useless enough as it is (teaching us to write an email, really?) and Conrad makes it worse.

This guy is terrible.

Let me preface this with saying that English is a strong suit of mine. This guy's quizzes were literally impossible to do correctly - for instance, we had to put seven sentences together in the proper order to form a perfect paragraph (the solution was far from obvious) and there are 5,040 possible ways to order them. I had to drop the course.

The most irresponsible I have faced. Cancelled every class that didn't have quiz and was kept for teaching, asked us to read at home. When asked questions about paper due, he had to go through the instructions only to vaguely tell me what was already written- felt like he didn't even know what to expect. Couldn't explain why I got the marks I got.

Conrad was the worst prof I have had so far at U of A. Although he is a nice person, he is incompetent as a professor. He gave us feedback on our essay proposals less than 12 hours before the essay was due, had no rubrics for grading and gave vague instructions for assignments. Choose a different professor if you actually want to learn something!

There was a lot of reading in this class. He clearly enjoys dystopian and apocalyptic texts but didn't do much teaching in the course. It was mostly just group discussions and then we left. I didn't get much from taking this course. Very untimely feedback as well.

Look, my high school English Diploma exam was one of my best grades (over 90%). I'm not bad at English. This prof was so outrageously bad. There were quizzes every other lecture (if I remember correctly) each worth something like 10% and had to drop the course because I was going to fail because they were so impossibly hard. STAY AWAY.

Terrible prof. Did not give timely feedback on assignments and essays. Online lectures consisted of an unorganized discussion between classmates. Did not give ANY information about the details of the final exam and only returned essay/term grades until the day before the exam, which was essentially useless. Stay away from this prof if you can.

Worst Professor gives little feedback with low grade and expects you know how to fix it without feedback. VERY disorganized and always cancelled class with projects due that week. Would not take again

The new term starts tomorrow and I still have no grades. He cancelled zoom meetings at least once a week. Taught me absolutely nothing and gave almost no feedback. Terrible.

This semester, the professor addressed there were family problems in his life, but he constantly cancelled zoom calls. I did not learn anything this semester. He did not teach quotation use or essay formatting. Did not get my final grade back either until the first day of the Winter semester. I would not recommend anyone taking him.

Whats the point of paying $560 for a course that you have to teach yourself. He heavily relied on the textbook and DID NOT TEACH US ONCE. Also, he barely provides any proper feedback from which you can fix your mistakes and loves to take off marks for small, minor mistakes. This course was a complete joke and waste of time.

Prof is nice but has skipped over 5 classes. Waste of my tuition and teaches out of a textbook. Never tells us what assessments are until when they start and sucks at answering emails. D:

Always cancelling class and class time was not being used effectively. It is almost the end of the semester and he has not given back any grades yet.

Conrad is always canceling class waste of tuition money and time. Not very ferda. I have not got any marks back this semester, this is weird because it is December 1st and classes are basically overwould not take class again.

Is very unclear on the requirements for assignments and is a very tough grader.

Tough marker, but somewhat easy to get a good grade and the book selections were relatively interesting. Consistently cancelled lectures the day before. Took a long, long time to mark assignments and gave little useful feedback, so expect little to no improvement in writing skills.

Conrad Scott is definitely not worthy of being a professor at U of A. He cancels classes a lot and expects his students to read a lot. Also for his essays, he does not mark on your content, rather, he marks only on your comma use. He also never teaches how to write an essay and expects us to learn ourselves. Never take Conrad!

Prof cancels class less than an hour before it is supposed to start routinely, and class time feels like a waste of time. Participation is marked and there are few assignments that the class is marked on. Despite the issues with the prof, it is a fairly easy A if you show up and keep up with the course material.

His teaching style is telling you to read the textbook, and do assignments without any input from him. He will cancel 80% of the classes, and on your assignments he will provide no feedback or justification on your grade. He will also take a month to give back anything. What a waste of $600.

I have never been so confused in an english class in my life. Conrad gives next to no instructions for any assignments but still expects you to read his mind. It's impossible to use commas correctly in his class, and there is way too much reading for a 100 level course. Do not take this prof

The amount of readings was way too much for a 100-level course. Barely taught us how to structure an essay or write a thesis. The essay prompts can be very ambiguous and it is impossible to get a decent mark on the quizzes, as it is mainly memorization and short answer. Overall do not recommend.

Most lectures, he would only talk for about 10 minutes and the rest of the lecture time was for us to talk to one another. He never taught us how to do anything. He gave at least one InkShed assignment every week. There was A TON of reading. The quizzes are ridiculously hard. Most people averaged around 40-50%. Wish I had a different prof for 102.

The only good thing about Conrad is that, unlike the other ENGL199 professors, showing up to his classes is optional. Other than that, he spoke more in the first lecture talking about the syllabus than he did for the rest of the course. He gives zero feedback on assignments and its as if he looks for excuses to cancel class.

You could submit a direct report written by Shakespeare himself and he would give it a B- and give 0 feedback on why it didn't fulfil his standards.

Barely showed up to class. Minimal assignment instructions. Tough grading. Minimal feedbacks. Horrible.

ENGL 199 with "Dr." Conrad Scott has been a waste of mental energy and emotionally taxing. The list of what Conrad lacks as an ENGL professor exceeds his qualities, so we'll just outline those: 1. Didn't have to attend class 2. Didn't have to hear him speak because there are a grand total of ZERO lectures TL;DR don't take, drop if you can.

Good luck if you have him... the one good thing about his class is that it's basically asynchronous, unlike other professors' classes.

If you have the chance, avoid taking a class with this prof by all cost. He does not teach anything, and gives lots of homework. Has no lesson plans and we either present to the class or have free time.

His classes consisted of less teaching and more him sitting at the front of the class while we worked on his copious and meaningless assignments, his quizzes were focused on small insignificant details of the absolute pile of texts we needed to read. Run.

Frustrating & really harsh marker. His quizzes are so annoyingly specific with details so tiny that it's really hard to remember especially with the length of the readings. He's harsh just for the sake of it, and his feedback is really bad. I'm not learning anything & there's also way too much homework. I really don't reccomend him as a 102 proff.

I underestimated the reviews saying he cancels class. One would think he would cancel class the night before. No. He cancels class an hour before it starts. When people are already on their way to campus. Completely unacceptable.

Absolutely atrocious

I don't know if this proff expects his students to be photocopiers but if we don't type exactly what he wants to the letter, he will dock up to half a point. That's a lot considering how much these quizzes/midterms are worth. If you read this, please be more lenient, I understand being strict to teach something but this isn't teaching us anything.

This is an introductory, required, basic english course for many degrees in order to graduate. Obviously this isn't a top priority class for students but he doesn't make it easier. His assigned readings take ridiculously long to finish and then expects us to memorize every detail of it to do okay on the exams, zero feedback on assignments, etc.

Final was today, which was the worst final for an entry level english class only giving us 2 hours for a full essay as well as intense recall questions for the crazy amounts of readings we had to do. After looking 20 of the 35 of my classmates left reviews almost all bad, take their warnings. I don't know how there are good reviews.

took his eng122 in 2016, it was a nightmare! amt of reading in a short time is crazy and he is extremely harsh on marking! I studied my an off and only got C-! In the same term I got B- in another ENG with only half of effort! And he likes to test on extreme details in the corners! He merely give any constructive feedback when you want to do better

Dr. Scott was probably the worst professor I've ever had, and if you are in his class, I BEG you, get out while you can. He has not marked the single essay that was due over two months ago, he constantly cancels class, gives vague feedback in emails, and will degrade you if you miss a single class. Plus, he expects you to read 4 books in 4 weeks.

For a professor who takes MONTHS to grade your work, the feedback is low effort. It also shows when they cancel classes consistently. Generally, I didn't learn much in this course, and it confirmed my distaste for English classes. It didn't make me a stronger writer, or a reader.

If you have this guy, get ready to read and then read some more, and then once you finish some other homework you'll have to read again. It's an absolute joke how much reading this guy makes you do. Don't recommend this guy at all because you will have trouble balancing other classes.

He always cancels classes last minute, which is very frustrating if you have to commute to university. His lectures are also very pointless since he speaks for 5-10 minutes then assigns ink sheds to complete on your own time. He has no respect for the student's time. His tests also lack logic since they are centred around memorization of readings.

He seems like a decent enough guy, but as a professor I wouldn't take his class again. Barely lectures, is a slow and hard marker, he assigns so much reading it's actually beyond me. No clue how a student is supposed to get higher than a B in his course. Automatically, you will be put in the "barely passing" range on his first reading quiz. The quizzes are completely memorization-based and regard incredibly specific details from the many readings you are assigned(worse, they are worth 14%, and half the final is identical).

By far the worst teacher I've ever had. He takes two months to mark a single essay and gives mediocre feedback on top of being a harsh marker. He assigns ridiculous amounts of daily readings, and his lectures are a waste of time and only mandatory because no one would show up if they weren't. If you have him as your prof, drop out immediately.

INSANELY difficult prof who will cancel class with little notice and who grades insanely tough and late. got my first assignment grade back 2.5 months after the class had started, and its stupid how much he assigns to read. 10 short stories, 3 short films, 4 novels, all within 3 months is ridiculously difficult and all of them have assignments.

I was incredibly disappointed by this English class. It had an over the top amount of readings, tests that were not impossible but were more about memorizing random info from readings than they were critical analysis. He canceled class a frustrating amount of times and when he did show up did very little teaching. Avoid this professor.

Quizzes on tiny details, he will not prepare you at all (most people failed). You won't get an accurate grade for a long time (we got essay 1 back 2 days before essay 2 was due 2 months later). Lectures are mandatory attendance book club for people who like to memorize books. He shared everyone's grade by student # but left it in alphabetical order

Genuinely don't even know how I passed his class. His lectures were essentially student led discussion workshops, and his quizzes were so oddly specific that they were impossible to study for apart from rereading all 23+ texts and memorizing every single detail. Refused to be open about what we could expect on quizzes and grading criteria.

This professor's "lectures" are student lead workshops where he interrupts the students to plug his own ideas. Attendance is only mandatory because he has participation marks. The "quizzes" are incredibly specific, and require that you memorize word for word 30+ texts, including novels. Not once in this class did we do any sort of critical analysis

Please avoid this professor at all costs. The title of the class may be critical analysis but this is purely a climate change analysis class. There is an insane amount of readings so if you want to do well, drop out of your other classes. Attendance is mandatory but only when he shows up as half the classes get canceled when he feels like it. AVOID

The worst class I have ever taken at the U of A, who knows what my grade is because he simply DOES NOT GRADE. its april and I have zero feedback what so ever, should I drop the course or stay in it, who knows because he seems incapable of grading our major essay submited in JANUARY. Instructor did not respect students time. The amount of classes cancelled in an untimely manner was unexpectable and disappointing. Questions asked in class or via email were not explained professionally or adequately. Answers were cryptic and unhelpful. Overall, the course felt like it was designed with the intent for students to fail.

Sends out emails cancelling class 30min before its supposed to start, and one time he just did't show up and emailed an hour later. He assigned 30+ readings (including 3 novels) and you are expected to recall titles, authors, and the most insignificant details for his written quizzes, yet he ridicules people who fail. Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. He does not care about this class whatsoever and it is clear by his low attendance with little to no notice of class cancellations. As others have mentioned, he doesn't teach anything. The lectures are just him getting the class to speak with no input at all. No "critical analysis" skills were learned.

His quizzes questions are so specific and can ask about a small detail from a pool of 30+ texts/novels. They are impossible to study for, no practice questions, no study guide, will not point you in the right direction whatsoever. Waste of time, genuinely makes me question why I go to school in the first place. Not sure how he is still employed.

It will not be enjoyable, he will cancel every other class, you will have to read a lot. BUT if you are stuck in this class you can do good. He marks essays fairly easily which makes up for any bad test grades. Good luck!!!

classes are student led discussions. he barely teaches, he just adds and confirms our points for discussion. his essay marking was not helpful and took him 2 months to mark the first one. very specific about quizzes that you have to memorize the authors, titles, and quotes correctly of the readings, including the 3 novels. cancels classes often.

I had the pleasure of having him for two classes in one semester and I will admit it was quite bad. He cancels classes a lot but our attendance is mandatory. He assigned 4 novels that needed to be read within 4 weeks and expects you read a lot. He doesn't understand that students have 3-4 other classes. He also took forever to mark, took two months

Run. Currently making it my goal to invent time travel just to avoid the torture that was Conrad's class. Genuinely no idea how I passed this class with my sanity intact. Don't do it.

Worst experience of my life. He expects everyone to have an understanding of things he has never taught, several times I ran to his class only to discover there was no class at all IN WINTER.Took forever to mark (1st assignment was marked three months into the semester). Just, don't. Literally don't.

Seems like a nice guy outside of class but I learnt more about climate change than critical analysis. He isn't specific about what he wants on essays so writing was difficult. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take any classes with this prof. He was genuinely the worst prof I have had.

No analysis just memorization. Dreaded class. First quiz best mark 75% and most people lit failed. Prof didn't see this as a result of his poor teaching. Lowk rude and cuts ppl off, sometimes condescending tone. Harsh marker on memorization quizzes. Didn't know our marks until four days before final(didn't even include essay 2 mark).

If you want to learn anything do not take this class. I spent more time completing useless assignments and memorizing authors names than I did learning. Quizzes are insanely specific and you will most likely fail it even if you studied. You are expected to know what he wants for essays and will not get any feedback whatsoever.

Half the class will fail the class if they fail the final - still hasn't handed us back our essay 2. Please for your sanity avoid this class at all costs.

This man is single handly the reason why I hate my self, I dedicated hours upon hours to this course, played nice, but no the man always finds a way to screw you over. He is my 13th reason, do not take this class ever. And in the end he still got me accussing me of using AI.

Critical analysis? More like a climate change class. Literally never take this guy unless you hate yourself so much that you wanna suffer. The exam had niche questions that you literally would need to memorize specifics, and even included fill-in-the-blanks for specific passages from texts you NEED to learn. Idk how I survived this class.

This class is honestly a joke.I only needed it as a first year requirement, however it ended up taking a lot of time+energy on many assignments that combine for a small completion grade.Quizzes were nearly impossible,instructions were often unclear or non-existent memorizing over 30+ readings that were not even based off of a level of understanding

Conrad Scott's quizzes were impossible to do well on. I had studied for every single one, and each time was faced with questions that were incredibly specific and irrelevant in terms of testing our intelligence and knowledge. Never showed up for lectures and if he did he it was so we could ask questions and nothing else. A stick could have been teaching the class and I would have learned more. If you want to learn try to switch profs
