He goes straight off of the book powerpoints, but explains them well. He does go on tangents, but they are often entertaining. He does not require attendance, but does mention test questions as he goes over the notes. He is helpful, but he is a new professor and struggles a small amount occassionally.
Great professor. He curves every test. we had 3 test and a final. does pp lectures read the pp and study from them. the textbook i would just read for an overview.class attendance is not mandatory. since he just reads over the pp I didn't attend every class except day before exam for review sessions made a B. be sure to look over pp daily.
Amazing teacher! I recommend him! As long as you keep up with your studying and read the book and follow along with the powerpoints you will do fine! I got lazy and got a B
He is very entertaining and it is worth going to class even though class in not mandatory. Just about all of his test questions come from the ppt slides, but he'll throw in a question or two from the book just to see if you read it. He's pretty cool and as long as you pay attention to his explainations and study the slides, you'll do fine.
I have just finished the 2nd test idk what i got but I'm pretty sure i did okay i got over a 100 on the first test because had a 15 pt curve! Read ppt/book and u should be good. He is funny and brings his dog to class, lol He doesn't ask questions he can't immediately answer! He reteaches himself every time for class so his questions aren't hard!pt1
He is very funny & easy going.his test are easy (he doesn't put something that he can't immediately answer) he doesn't know general bio that well so he won't put hard or tricky questions. just pay attention, read ppt,he puts 1-3 questions over book related stuff and he will email if he doesn't feel like having class lol overall easiest bio teacher
Great teacher had 15pt curves on all 3 test, just read ppt and book, masteringbio is good practice if your not good at memorizing. overalll fun and easy teacher... if you can at least pull a B on the test then with the curve it will be an A... Try hard in lab so that it will help grade. final counts twice if u take it and will replace a test grade
He gave big curve and it's worth going to his class. You will learn more from him. His class is funny too. Absolutely recommend him.
I absolutely love him! He reminds me of a smarter version of Seth Rogan. If he taught Biology 1442, I would definitely take him again. He doesn't require attendance but I learned a lot from going to class. Reading over the powerpoint and textbook is the way to pass.
Cool and funny guy. Tries his best to make notes funny. Reading the textbook is extremely helpful for tests. May give surprise extra credits. I would love to take him again, easiest Bio prof at UTA as he tells you majority of what is expected to see in the tests plus good curve.
Very cool guy. He's funny and makes a rather boring, tedious subject entertaining. Expect to study quite a bit for the material is just hard, not anything to do with him. Read the chapters a couple of times, go over his lecture slides and you should pass. Gives a nice major curve. Take his class.
Try your best to get him! Makes class fun as he can, gives a great curve!
Dr. Roelke is such a cool guy! He makes the class so interesting and is straight forward about what he expects. Tests are pretty hard but he gives HUGE curves. Don't buy the book, you wont need it. Take his class!
This is one of those professors where you leave the class actually feeling like you've learned something. He makes lectures fun with his real life experience at the Zoo. The tests are hard but as other people have said, if you read the chapters and come to class you will pass.
It's not easy. His "reviews" don't help. He doesn't tell you what you need to know for the exams so you are basically on your own. He's pretty funny at times but he's sarcastic about everything. I bought the book & it was pointless. 4 tests & a final no hw or quizzes.Oh & you can't write notes during lecture bc he goes super fast through the slides
Gives VERY generous curves. Gives practice exams. Lets you keep exams to study for final. Easy going and laid back. On his way to class, he caught a falcon and brought it to class! Take him if you can.
Was not very helpful, goes through slides really fast, what he teaches in class is not always relative to what ends up on the exams. But he gives extra credit. He is very sarcastic and uses sensual examples to explain. Overall I dont recommend.
Very funny and gives a generous curve! You will have to study on your own, though. The material is hard to learn and there is a lot, but try your best and you will get an A or B.
Aside from his bad jokes and sarcasm, his class was ridiculous. He wasn't clear in what he expected us to know for our tests and he was not very helpful at all. He just talked, thats about it. I would not recommend anyone to take him as a professor for biology 1441.
Roelke implies that he fervently reads what people on here write about him. So, with that in mind, I think you could do better, Roelke. You may know the material enough to teach it, but instead you borrow PowerPoint slides that some other professor made long ago, admit that it's not even yours, and then give tests that don't even come from them.
Very tough class. He goes through the slides fast but it is also a summer class. He is funny and keeps the class entertaining but you have to do a lot of studying on your own to make a decent grade on the test
Corey is an Awesome Professor! He keeps the material relevant and outlines exactly what he expects you to do in class. Class attendance is not required nor needed but it definitely helps. He actually tells you exactly what will be on the test which helps you decide what to study. His approach on Biology is more applied science which is great!
He didn't teach just went through the slides. Did not learn ONE thing from him. Had to study on my own which didn't help because his tests were very difficult. He gives a huge amount of curves though but that doesn"t help if you learn nothing from him
Prof. Roelke is an amazing teacher. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and has cool stories and is super funny. I took this in the summer and expected to do a lot of studying week of the tests but they were straight forward and he prepares you well. Looks like BIOL1441 freshman can't handle the college heat, don't listen to them...
Come to class and make sure to remember his explanations because you will see them on the tests...
After this class I'm able to point at different vegetation in TX and know what it is, so you def. leave the class knowing more. Attend the lectures, as a lot of test questions are presented there (they're not on the slides), and know which species is which. Funny Professor, too.
Dr. Roelke is great and I highly recommend this class. His teaching style is great with tons of cool examples/anecdotes. Test are reasonable, but they do cover a lot of material, so studying is a must. Lab is fun and helps with lecture.
Dr. Roelke is one of the funniest professors at UTA. He keeps class interesting with funny stories and YouTube videos. He really knows what he's teaching. 95% of his tests are straight from the slides, but his tests are VERY detail-oriented, so be sure to study EVERYTHING he presents to you in class. This class was a lot of fun to go to every week.
As a relatively new professor, Roelke has room to grow but is receptive to all feedback and fair with test curves. He's done a great job with his first semester teaching this class and I'm confident each following semester will be even better. Also super attractive, should tone it down so his good looks don't distract from the lecture.
He's okay.
Lectures are fun. This class is just straight up memorization. Memorize everything on the slides. My complaints about the class are that most of this info, if you're pre-health, is pretty useless and at times I felt like I was wasting my efforts. I do think the class is interesting&entertaining but...I can only care so much about worms.
Good teacher, hard class. Had to read alot from the textbook.
Started out ok, but as the semester went on he spent more time reading slides. Most of what I learned from his class was from his stories, which had nothing to do with the class material.
It's actually pretty hard to make an A in this class. There was always a bell curve(that corey always pointed out); 15% As, 30% Bs, and the rest. You'll have to work hard for your A and memorize everything. Exams are fair, but questions are random. Lab is tedious. It just repeats the lecture and makes you draw a lot. Couldnt care less for it.
Even though the class attendance isn't mandatory I would go cause occasionally there is extra point opportunities. He does read slides word for word. Tests were okay. I recommend reviewing old exams and memorizing the material. Lab sucked but do take seriously. Overall, I got a B due to not trying as hard in lab. Definitely recommend!
STAY AWAY!!! Def wouldn't recommend him or any of his classes. He doesnt know how to test. He would ask you about random stuff here and there that even experts on that field don't know. He also ask about weird stuff and expect that everyone has watched Jurassic Park or Sponge Bob.Thats not why we are in college for MR! Def don't recommend
Def not recommend him!!! Stay AWAY from his classes. Didn't learn anything from him or his class because of the way his exams are..100% MEMORIZATION
Not clear about his exams or assignments. Expect you to know what he doesn't tell you about.
His personality doesn't help him to be a professor which hinder the educational process! Don't recommend taking him.
Just study the powerpoints and sometimes they are gonna be a little unclear so just look at the book. 6 tests - 10% each. Overall, he keeps the lectures entertaining, but his tests are kinda hard since you can mix stuff up easily. My advice is to make flashcards and take notes.
He's cool. He always tell good stories and make the class entertaining. totally recommend him ! :)
Had him for A&P 1 LAB. Not terrible, but not my favorite person. His personality comes off way too strong & doesn't really do much actual teaching. Reads off his slides so fast there's no point in taking notes. Granted, this lab is mostly a "learn on your own" type of lab. I really don't think I'd want him as a lecture instructor - take w/ caution!
6 tests. Each test has about 160 slides of 4 chapters. each slide has appx 60 words. memorize 1000+words cause he is random plus 160 pgs bookper test. give curves, dontmatter u start off with a 90 nyways(hard questions u will never get) overall he is cool but every 2 weeks u get punched in the gut(a TEST!). finals are not cumulative, the only plus.
He's aight!6 tests, non-cumulative. LOTS&LOTS TO MEMORIZE for each test every 2 weeks or so, so do not expect an easy A as you have to work hard(even in lab, yes).Book's not really needed, just few questions bt if you pay attention in class he covers that & gives curves on tests.Avoid another course w/lab. Lab is 40% so choose TA wisely(it matters)
There are 6 exam in the class. Just remember everything from the slide. Final is not cumulative. An A is not impossible but must study hard and do well in lab because that is 40% of overall grade.
No need to buy the textbook. Test are based on PowerPoint slides and class lecture. Go to class! A lot of test questions are given in class. He shows a lot of videos and ask questions about them. Ex: What was the fish doing in the video from class? If you have Alex for lab, good luck! Know everything!
Go to class read the slides study the book (a lot is from the book rarely from the online quizzes) flashcards are useless for this class too much information per card. He curves when he feels like it. I loved the class and he was an alright teacher.
Very helpful, and easy on the eyes too. You have to study, so don't expect this to be easy. However, if you put some effort you will get the grade you want.
His tests are HARD, buckle up he will ask you about the things you least expect
This class will bore you to death. It doesn't help that he runs through the material as if we're being chased by wolves. He's into zoology and believes students share that with him. The reality is: THIS CLASS IS A KILLER. If you can blindly memorize information of no use in life, then this class if for you. Otherwise, you will struggle. No curves
Hard, hard, hard... He really doesn't give a care about students, rushes through the material. Lectures are waste of time as he reads from slides that he posts 30 minutes before class. Class is 99% blind memorization and 1% intelligence. He speaks over you not to you:( His class makes PCHEM and MetReg sound easy and fun! Run away if you can:(
Good luck on this class. You will need to know EVERY THING, I mean talk about overwhelming students. You can simply tell that he is a miserable person- well educated in Zoo. But miserable non the less and he gets it out on the students. I don't recommend him at all, unless you are the master memorizer and kingqueen of random information . Worst
Save yourself the pain & take plant science. This class is a killer. Worthless random facts about different phyla that you are supposed to memorize blindly. He speaks over you not into you, no active learning. He sits and pontificate from his ivory tower with his empty sermon "welcome to college" as if we play all the time Confusing exams
Strictly from PowerPoint slides. Lab is most difficult part. Requires tons of memorization.
Probably the hardest class I've taken so far. This class is straight up memorization, so if you're not good at it then it'll be a long semester. He literally reads off his powerpoints and you may have to buy the book if you actually want to understand what's happening. Practicals in lab are tough too.
The class has a lot of material that you need to learn. There is a test roughly every two weeks covering approx. 4 chapters. Class attendance is important because there will be 2-4 questions on every test that you can only know the answer from class & extra credit. Tests are hard but fair. Good curves based on overall lecture+lab grades.
This guy is the epitome of okay
I wouldn't encourage to take zoology class unless you are master in memorizing. Everything is MEMORIZATION. Lab sucks too, it brings down the grade. His lecture is nice, but i HATED that i had to memorize everything.. So if you aren't good in memorization, then don't take this class
Dr. Roelke is a good teacher, his lectures are very informative and the guy is hilarious. His tests are stupidly hard, but as long as you attend class and read every single chapter you're tested on, you should pass. Unless you're really interested and study 24-7, you won't make an A.
I expected this class to be the most challenging course of my semester. It turned out to be my blow off class. Just study the slides and watch the videos and you should be fine. I stopped going to class after the first test
Despite what you may have heard, this is NOT an easy class by any means. Lab really helps for this class so choose your TAs well and study for practicals! He assigns grades based on percentages so most people make Bs with decent effort. No reason to fail this class. Best class to prepare for med school, so much info to know and memorize!!!
Most boring class ever. Don't need the text book. He adds random questions to the test that you would only know The answer to if you go to class. 3 tests. No quizzes or extra credit. I barely ever went to class.
If you have the option to take another professor then go for it. Roelke is very entertaining & his lectures are quite interesting. With that said he's very difficult and his exams get extremely specific. Zoology's overall grade is based around 3-4 exams so see if there's another professor teaching it the semester you are trying to take it.
I hated this class. Everything is memorization. He's hilarious and good lecturer. But don't take this class if you are not good at memorizing. This class killed my gpa
Don't buy his rip-off proprietary Zoology textbook. Rent Integrated Principles of Zoology 15th ed from Amazon for less than half the cost. His version is just this book with the chapters in the order he teaches them and his name on the cover. Take this class if you're good at teaching yourself, he doesn't teach. He just likes having an audience.
Corey is a really chill guy. His lectures are funny and class wasn't a drag because of him. BUT there were only 3 tests and he didn't drop any or give extra credit. the tests were hard. which sucked. Id say read the book. Go to class bc he gives out some test questions in class. Also study all practice problems online!!!!
He's a fair and funny teacher. If he screwed something up on the test then he usually just gives it out for free. His tests can be a little bit tricky. Just read through it carefully and make sure to study very well. This class is a lot of memorization but it's doable. Attend class for the random questions he gives out.
He is an awesome professor, funny, and very well informed about biology. Make sure you attend class because he gives out random answers to questions that will be on the test that isn't in the book. His test can be tricky, but if you go to class and thoroughly read the book it shouldn't be too hard. No extra credit either.
Anyone that takes biology needs to take him! He is such a good professor he is funny and he's PowerPoints are super easy to understand.. He curves the exams too! Realist professor out there Wish he was my chemistry professor!
Roelke's lectures are entertaining and because he usually has a good story tied in you really remember the material. I loved this class and I was not expecting that. He is very smart and if you get butt hurt easily then you will be easily offended. don't take things personally and you will learn something about zoo and have a decent time in lecture
He is a great professor, however, the exams are not easy. You have to work for it. I studies from the Quizlet which help me a lot to do better in exams. The final is not cumulative which is awesome. There are total of 6 exams and he gives curves in each exams. He Tells some of the exam questions randomly in class.
Dr. Roelke was an awesome professor. He took over our class when our original professor was fired, and really grabbed our attention. Very interesting lectures, and fair grading criteria. Tests not too difficult, but you must study to do well. I would take him again.
Very memory intensive course. If you have a hard time with memorization of classification and descriptions then you will not do well in this course. If memorization is your thing you will get an A, otherwise expect a B at best. Overall, I had a lot of fun in the course and learned a lot of fun facts. Make sure you go to lectures.
He is a great professor! He is very intelligent and funny. I would recommend him for sure!
Very humorous professor, not to mention very passionate and intelligent in his field as well. However, much reading from the textbook is needed in order to pass his exams, and although attendance is not mandatory, it would be a loss and shame to miss out on his lectures.
Roelke is a GREAT professor. Hilarious, I laugh in every lecture. Lots of quick memorization; the class is super fast paced, so you really need to put in a lot of effort in order to get an A. He curves a lot on his tests. Tests are tough if you haven't read or paid attention in class. All questions mainly come from powerpoints. I highly recommend!
Roelke's tests contain questions such as "In class, we discussed.." thus attendance is ESSENTIAL. The questions are detail-specific, so memorization is key. With that said, often there are questions not from the Powerpoints. In addition, questions from a previous chapter may show up. To get an A, one must passionately self-research zoology.
He's very chill & funny, but reads straight off power point, so going to class was not that important. He does give off few random answer to questions once in a while. 50 question test in a 50 minute lecture. Straight memorization everything, so start studying ppw's few days before test. Makes class interesting, but gets off topic easily.
Honestly this class was not as bad as people made it out to be. Although Roelke did ask some really irrelevant questions on his exams, which you could only know if you attended class, it balanced out with his curves. Just take a couple of days to fully memorize the powerpoints and you'll end up with an A. The hardest part about zoo was practicals:X
It doesn't say much about UTAs Bio program when you have to choose between this class or Plant Science. Close your eyes and pick one. The hardest thing about this class is the Lab because the assistants are hit or miss. There are questions that he puts on there from lectures alone which could be the difference between an A and a B. GPA destroyer.
Tests are straight from the power points and he curves a lot. Gives you specific pages to read out of the book for each test (no more than 6). Gives out bonus questions during lecture, so don't skip. This semester an 85 was an A but that changes each semester. Very funny, wants you to learn. Everything you need to know is in the syllabus.
Attendance is required for this class, but sometimes its worth it to listen to his lectures. He is very passionate about biology and knows his stuff. His tests are pretty hard/okay. 50 questions in 50 minutes, but if you study, then it shouldn't be that of a problem. Curves hugely.
So, I did not like Roelke for a while and I heard bad things before I took his class. But really what Bio class is not difficult? Roelke really wants his students to pass. He curves really freaking hugely. He saved my Science GPA!! Roelke is great!! Really cares about Bio and always explains concepts well. He also is KIND OF funny.
Roelke is very funny and I really enjoyed his lectures. The tests can be really tough, with some questions that seem out of nowhere. Just reading his powerpoints aren't enough, I recommend actually reading the textbook. He throws in a couple questions that you'd only know from being in the lecture, so I would attend class regularly.
Dr. Roelke is a great professor. This class was really challenging for a summer semester, but I ended up doing ok. The book is not mandatory. Lab is really tough. In order to do well you need to be able to memorize a lot of material. Show up to class, because he tell stories and shows clips of movies that are on the exam in lecture.
Took Dr. Roelke's zoology course over the summer and thought it was simple IF you make sure to learn the material presented to you, which again is not all that much. Attending class is mandatory as he puts up videos in class that show up on the exams. The labs are probably the most challenging aspect of this class -FOCUS ON TAXONOMY, AND BOLD TERMS
He gets together and drinks with his professor friends, and then they read each other's worst ratemyprofessor comment. Other than that, lab is much harder than lecture. Expect to memorize like never before in lab. Lecture has 5 exams, final is non-comprehensive. Lab is 40% of final grade.
Honors 1442 with Dr. Roelke has been one of the most entertaining classes of my college career. I took it in Spring 2016 with a class that took a while to get comfortable with Dr. Roelke, but at the end of the semester, we made memes out of him and he took it in good humor. Essay tests, final not cumulative, Song of the Dodo was the required book.
Dr. Roelke is awesome and very knowledgeable, write down absolutely everything from the ppts and the random things/stories he tells you in class because they'll most likely be on the exam. Since lab is 40% of your grade in this class, don't slack in lab. Don't get discouraged after the first test, it gets easier. And make LOTS of flashcards!
Pure memorization. 2nd hardest class behind human anatomy for me though heard CVA is hardest. Probably only got an A b/c my other classes were easy so I could focus on Zoo. 1st and last exam are easiest. He's humorous but don't trust that previous exam Qs won't show up again! EC for dressing up for Halloween. Curves. Give some exam Q in class.
Questions on the test are pretty straight forward and from the powerpoints. Just be prepared to memorize a lot of details because each test is really condensed on the material you need to learn. His tests are not comprehensive and the questions will not repeat, but be sure to keep some previous material in your head for the lab practicals.
Good lecturer. Tons of work. lab is 40% of grade. memorize taxonomy first for lab. textbook is quite expensive. a couple of questions are only in the textbook but most are in slides.
Dr. Roelke is hilarious. Zoology was the one class that I actually looked forward to attending.
Funny guy, has no filter, can be the biggest troll on earth. Gives off a deviant, mischevious type vibe because he's always smirking from ear to ear. Exams are straightforward but material heavy. Lab is like lecture on steroids. Exams every 2 weeks so be ready for the vigorous studying. You can use his old tests to study but we had a rat.
Dr. Roelke is a good professor but don't expect to get many notes written/typed because he moves very fast on the powerpoints. If you just go to class it wont be enough to pass, you HAVE TO read the book. He likes to throw in funny jokes and the lecture before the exam he will tell you what to expect on the test. This class is not for the weak!
"Interesting" man. Easy A
Instructor Roelke is by far one of the best instructors I've had a class with. I struggled in this class. If you show that you care, he will care which means show up to lecture. His tests come strictly from power points and videos shown in class. Show up everyday, the class is very heavily informative. Focus on passing lab and you'll do fine.
Easiest biology class ever. However, tests are in every 2 weeks so don't slack off. He curves if the class average is lower than a 70. Very fair professor. Doesn't do drops. Make sure to do well in Lab. A B can turn into an A. Always attend class due to questions in the exam may appear and watch the videos in ppt. Use that to study. Good luck! :D
Dr. Roelke is a walking encyclopedia. He is funny as hell and probably one of the best lecturers on the campus. The class is difficult, be prepared to read and study or you won't pass. The tests are a bell curve, but once you do bad it's hard to recover. There is a lab attached, it's just as difficult.
I've had him for two different classes. Your grade consists of 4/5 exams + your lab grade; lab and lecture are both worth about 50/50 so if your're not doing well in lab, do well on your lecture exams and you should be fine, or vice versa. Both times I took him, he curved our final letter grade. Study what's on his PPTs and you'll be good!
This is a really fun class but it's crazy hard. Roelke is a great professor who really knows his stuff. Go to class because he gives hints about what will be on the test, and sometimes gives you test questions ahead of time.
Never wrote a review before but this guy definitely deserves one! He's easily the best professor I've ever had and would definitely take him again for zoology:) He really cares about making sure his students leave his class with actual knowledge that they both care about and use. Over all super genuine guy, funny, and great teacher.
Prof. Roelke is an outstanding professor, both in his lectures and in teaching the material, and is extremely passionate about his work. His teaching style and humor are akin to one another; amazing. Biology majors are fortunate to have a tutor such as he.
Grades are based only on exams and the exams are based almost entirely on what he says during lecture. Take notes on everything he says including stories, video clips and mythical sea monsters. He's not interested in interacting with students, so not a good choice if you're actually excited about the subject.
The textbook wasn't needed. Dr. Roelke posts his slides online, but he is very good at explaining w/examples in class. Attendance is taken with the clicker through questions on slides. He doesn't update hw and participation grades often, which I wish he did. Other than that, study and come to class. He's a funny dude and will break it down for you!
Roelke is a funny guy that knows zoology well. The class itself is a beast with 6 exams, plus all the lab stuff. As long as you come to class and pay attention, he's a friendly guy and will help you. He likes to give out extra credit by asking for funny jokes or dressing up in costumes.
Professor Roelke makes this class very entertaining, however make sure you do well in lab as you would in lecture. Lab in my opinion was the hardest part of the course because it contained a lot more information than lecture did. Other than the 2 practicals in lab, there are 6 exams every two weeks.
Roelke is very good, however, he tends to go off topic in his lectures. You end up watching a ton of pointless YouTube videos and talking about things that will never show up on the exams.
If you want to make an A, you need to know everything on the slides. He does make you read specific pages from the book, but I made an A without the book. He always curves the avg to a 70. Lab is easy if you put in the work every week. Go to class- he tests on videos he showed in class and sometimes the jokes he made. Take pics in lab and label!!
Easy A. Only 4 grades: 2 exams, one presentation, and the iNat project(just taking pics of animals/plants). The first exam was the hardest part of the class. Half the questions were not talked about in class. Memorize all the plants and animals on ppts. Go to the local field trips, he will give hints about whats on the exam. Extra credit. Made a 99
Went to 5 or so lectures the whole semester, because his lecturing was useless for the tests. Reading off the powerpoints is something I can do on my own. Anyways, he's a good person, but as a professor, he goes too fast and goes off topic way too much. Tests were kinda hard. Self-study is the best way to go. Don't study last min.
Although he keeps the class entertaining more than the other professors do, this is practically a self teach class where if you have the book and he post the power point slides; I would focus more on getting an 80 or above in lab (which is easy) if your not good on test, than you would not have to worry too much about your lecture grade.
Dr. Roelke is a great lecturer! Go to class, most of the info on the tests are on the slides but he purposely bases some questions strictly on the lecture. He talks really fast; recording the lectures would help a ton so you don't miss anything. Lots of memorization. Don't buy the book, just borrow it from the SECC, read the pages he recommends.
Memorize EVERYTHING! Like if he's giving a lecture & uses some off the wall example, memorize it! ALL the little things your think are insignificant, memorize them! THEY WILL SHOW UP ON THE EXAMS. He's super funny & lectures are great. Lots of vids & even a movie! Clear cut grading criteria. Usually a curve. If you fail, it's your own fault tbh
This class is A TON of information to memorize, but Role at least makes it bearable. His lectures are funny and he throws in the things he talked about in class as easy test questions. You need to study the slides a ton but don't bother with the book. Attendance not mandatory but he does ask questions on the test about stories he told/videos
Lecture isn't too difficult but you HAVE to put effort in lab. There's a ton of information that he splits into six tests throughout the semester but as long as you keep up with the material you should be fine. Lab is difficult and counts for 40% of your grade. GO TO CLASS because he tests over random things he mentions.
Tests are tough and all we do is watch weird videos. Departmental bio is such a bad idea
He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. I did them all. He never added any of it. When I asked him about it, he refused to honor it and was very rude. He called my lab table "the reject table" and made jokes out of not giving us any lab samples or making us wait to get them. But he's an entertaining lecturer. That's something, I guess.
Definitely not an easy A. The lab is way harder than the actual lecture. No need to read the book most of the test is based from the lectures. Lecture attendance is not necessary but its very beneficial. Record the lectures!!!!!
BIOL 1442 with him isn't bad at all. You don't need the book, just his PowerPoints. The exams are literally just the PowerPoints so showing up to class is very optional. He kinda just reads off the slides with the occasional short story or random video. He's interesting, chill, and easy to talk to. He's pretty funny too. Easy to contact.
He's an alright teacher, and he's pretty engaging to listen to, but all he does is read off of the standardized powerpoint and show a few videos. This course is entirely memory based, so I stopped showing up near the end and just studied on my own. Get the powerpoints on blackboard, know them well, and you'll be fine.
PHEW! Zoology was a ride. Go to class, memorize the slides at home, memorize taxonomy and stuff for lab. go to class to watch the videos and hear his jokes cause sometimes he puts it on the test. easy points!! hes a funny, snarky guy. I liked the class and will definitely say "Hi" if I see him in the halls!!
I took his online Biology class for nursing majors. There are tons of power points and videos. Power points are what you need to study for questions asked on exams and quizzes and the videos are what help you actually understand whats going on. Given that this is an online class, he does not make it easy (understandably so), so study!
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Roelke is a cool guy and super smart, but his lecture style is not the best. He flies through the powerpoints so get ready to read the chapters of the book if you want to pass the exams and the departmental final. I had to teach myself the material-if you need tutoring go to it because that will help.
Roelke is by far the most difficult professor that I have ever taken. Not only are his tests super hard and over detailed, his class is just simply unorganised. He does not have test dates in the syllabus and he'll tell you about the next test 3-4 days before! The lab just adds on to the misery. If you have a choice, do NOT take him.
The quizzes are very hard - average grades were in the high 60s for a class of 90 students. The test questions are VERY TRICKY, and some had typos! Presumably the extreme specificity of questions is due to the class being online without proctored exams, but still. This class stressed me out. Upside is I now feel like I've mastered the content!
Did I enjoy this class? No. Standardized testing and labs where it is given busy-work assignments is not it. However, I'd take Corey again because he does not sugar coat. Unfortunately, this class wants us to read 40+ pgs per chpt and be asked questions of the smallest details on the exam (my biggest pet peeve). Overall, this BIOL dpt. needs work.
AVOID HIM if possible. I am a straight A student, worked super hard teaching myself because his lectures and reviews are horrible, barely got a B. He is very condescending. Does not help you. Lies to you and says there is hope just so he no longer has to deal with you. Reviews NEVER helped with the test. Department is a mess. Test questions tricky
Roelke is a solid choice when choosing between the 1442 professors. He is hilarious and tries to make things as simple as possible. Go to class if you can because his lectures really do help, but reading the book and taking notes over it is what solidified my A. He gives great reviews before exams. Put in the effort and you should have no trouble.
Honestly, he is a really weird guy. He is an okay professor, but his lectures were so boring. All he ever did was read off the slides and crack a few jokes that sucked. His tests were tricky and very blunt. Wouldn't take him again. Attendance is not required, but don't skip!
It sucks that we had to take a class like this online due to COVID, but Dr. Roelke made lectures fun and super interesting. You'll really have to work to get an A, but makes sure everyone passes as long as they're putting in the effort. Lectures are a must as he will give hints about what to note for the test.
Class is based off of 3 tests and a lab grade. DO NOT TAKE. Lab tests are all fill in the blank with no word bank or anything. Half of the animal orders and classes you can't even pronounce but he expects you to memorize how everything is spelled. He claims the class is hard to fail .. it's hard to pass unless you have photogenic memory.
I LOVE Roelke. I had him for limnology, and it was such a good experience. It was entirely online due to COVID, which was really nice. All of the tests consist of information taken from the slides, along with some videos he sends for us to watch. Overall, he is hilarious, he puts jokes in tests and lectures, and he cares about his students.
Dr. Roelke is a great professor! Watch his lectures for what to study. Lab is easy, study for practicals based on your TA's powerpoints.
Everything you need for exams will be told in lecture and in the slides. Some questions are based off videos that he will assign to watch and others based on jokes from lectures. You can get by with just the slides but will miss out on his comments about pictures, etc that can be on the exams. Curves were given on every exam and the final lab grade
Pls I am warning you.. this professor is not the way to go. Never responds to emails to where you have to go to his office. You will fail unless you were born knowing/talking biology. Ooof
I don't think he is a bad instructor. He is clear on his expectations, and the tests are hard if you don't memorize the books. Basically you have to teach yourself the material. Good luck.
Cool guy, power points and lectures were posted at the beginning of the semester to watch and look at whenever. Tests are long and kind of vague but he curves so theres some wiggle room. Zoology is a lot of info so be prepared to take in a lot.
Roelke is a great professor. He is super helpful and gives extra credit. There is a lot to do for this class. There are about 15 quizzes and 7 practice quizzes before each test. The quizzes are on Lockdown Browser. Study for the tests and quizzes and you'll be fine. Lab is easy.
I took zoology online with Dr. Roelke and I enjoyed his lectures and I think his exams are really fair. I don't think that reading the book is necessary to make an A, I just focused on the lectures. Dr. Roelke is very polite and professional in his communications with students.
He is very generous with curves; that is one of the best qualities of his class for sure. You will have to study very hard for this class. Information overload. Be careful on taking this class. Only take it if you truly need it, as there are easier alternatives. The exams are quite difficult, most are not satisfied with their grade in this course
I enjoyed this Biology online class. The material was very informative, and Professor Roelke provided different options for learning and studying the same material for each unit. There were PowerPoint presentations (which I found most helpful), videos, study guides, and textbook materials provided as useful tools. Grade curves provided on tests.
Professor Roelke was an amazing professor. His lectures are exciting and interesting. He was a joy to talk to and provided allot of extra credit. I would have had an easy A, but the labs are very information heavy, and I didn't study nearly enough for it, which ended up bringing me down to an B. Very easy A if you study.
Dr. Roelke is the best professor I have had during my 3 years at UTA. I have had him for 3 different courses now and in every class he gives fascinating lectures. He has helped solidify my educational and career goals as a biologist. He has absolutely opened up my eyes to the world around us. 10/10 recommend and would take again.
I've taken Corey for Bio1442(B), Zoology(A), Biology of Texas(A), Undergrad Research(A-B don't know yet), and just enrolled in his Limnology class for the fall. He is a great Professor and everything you need to know is in his lectures. He gives PowerPoints which go over everything you need to know for exams. Tests are pretty easy too!
He was very nice, the only thing that was the slightly irritating is the fact that he does not record his lectures. However, he posts all his powerpoints, hints at what will be on the test, and has many quick quizzes each week so you will be able to gauge what you need to study.
can be kind of condescending 1-on-1, but overall friendly and helpful. exams are straightforward and not difficult if you study. course is VERY HARD and his slides have excess info so be systematic. curves exams so the average is above a C. lectures are fun to attend, even if his jokes are sometimes corny.
i took roelke twice! once for my bio lab, and for my ecology lecture prof. his lectures are alright and he's pretty funny. very straightforward which some people may not like, but i prefer it personally. the course is completely laid out on canvas. there's a lot of info, but it is a science class so it's expected. the lowest test grade is dropped!
Professor Roelke is a great teacher, every morning he asks students how they are doing and whats new in their life. Professor Roelkes lectures aren't required but you should totally go, each day is a new adventure with him, one class he brought a box of pigeons. You should totally take him!
Boring instructor, often seemed to make stuff up on the fly. Made several inappropriate comments throughout the semester. Take one of the other instructors if you can!
I didn't attend a single class because it's all self-taught. Your grade consists of 2-3 short quizzes each week (about 30 quizzes total) and 4 online exams, with the lowest exam grade being dropped. It's biology so a lot of studying and memorizing is to be expected but it wasn't that bad. The lab is harder and more time-consuming than the lecture.
Dr. Roelke's lectures were really entertaining. His lectures though were not really helpful toward exams. There are also lots of quizzes in this course every week and 2 extra small books to read as well. I made an A w/o reading the textbook or small books. Dr. Roelke is kind and funny, but don't expect to get good email replies from him.
This guys lectures were intriguing and hilarious. You can tell he loves biology. But beware, this class is hard! There is lots of extraneous information in his slides, and he also blasts through important slides a little too fast. Part of the class is reading 2 books, which are relatively light readings. Chapters are also on average 100 slides long
This was one of my favorite classes/professor I have ever had. The class itself was difficult but he made it fun and exciting.
The professor doesn't matter for this class but I feel like Roelke's lectures were a waste of time. This class makes you memorize the whole textbook, two other books, to test you on the most specific details. This class is a lot of work compared to 1441. The only good part is that he does a tiny review before the test that will help you 25%.
Dr. Roelke is the bomb
Professors Roelke is very passionate about his subjects. He love to tell his experiences stories, a lot of them are funny story. Would recommend attending class because some of his test questions would base of whatever he cover in class only.
This class was FAR from easy! A LOT of memorization but if you study HARD you will do great! I missed a few lectures in the 5 week summer course which made me miss a FEW questions on tests...but he keeps his lectures ENTERTAINING! He is hilarious and loves what he does!
This professor lectures and discusses many tangents NOT related to the material. The powerpoint have few words on them that do give clear direction on what he wants you to know. The tests are nothing like lecture, expect to be given 5 answer choices that all seem valid. No study guides; "study everything".
The students who kiss up to him will say he is not challenging, but this class is VERY challenging. The amount of memorization you will have to complete is insane. Look, if you want to take this class then do so, but do not think it is going to be a grade booster. Nice guy, but his tests are insane. Watch one of his students thumb down my vote..
This class was probably the only class I ever studied for in my upper divisions. Students do not seem to understand how to think critically, which isn't his fault. I would zone out in class and perform well on exams. He is a very funny guy! I will miss his class and odd sense of humor.
Very biology-oriented for sure. You will know a great amount of plants and animals by the time you leave his class. He knows a lot and will expect you to do the same. Study everything he says and shows. Memorization-heavy, but he sure knows how to lift the mood up with his humor.
He gave us 4 exams and one presentation, he curved every exam around 10~20 points depending on the average. Presentation was 5 minutes on a water body of your choice, no rubric just talk about why you think its interesting. Only the exams and presentation are your grade although he did offer a nice amount of extra credit after the last exam.
Honestly, Roelke is by far the best biology professor I've had while at UTA, the man literally cannot be bothered to take himself seriously and makes dad jokes for the first 5 minutes of class, with that being said Zoology has a lot of content that requires straight-up "Learn it and burn it" tactics to succeed. Push comes to shove don't drop.
Weekly homework and quizzes
Corey is a really chill guy who has lots of interesting stories and examples during lecture. Class is straightforward, with weekly module quizzes based on lecture ppts, the textbook, and the two books required. Both books were kind of boring, but the class isn't impossible if you don't read them. Would recommend this professor!
He was very easy, just study the practice exam because the actual exams are the same. I didn't go to class a single day or study the material too much because I had other demanding classes.
Roelke's mad chill and willing to work with u Zoology content is easy but the tests go over a HUGE VOLUME of content that's honestly overwhelming like memorizing the name of a crab arm isn't hard but doin that for 50 species is U literally just gotta make a quizlet over every single word he says on the pptx and lectures Curves r mad generous
Great lectures. Tests are very information heavy, but totally doable. Labs aren't too bad either.
This class is very heavy. Study hard and don't miss any class because he has things he says in class that will show up on the exam. I didn't pay much attention on the 2nd exam and there were a bunch of questions I missed cause of that. Had to lock in the next 4 exams (theres 6 exams) so I could get an A. He does give a fat curve at the end though.
He is the most ok professor I have ever had and would definitely take a class taught by him again.
I've had Corey for 8 courses now. He is consistent, extremely intelligent, and understanding. I always get an A in his class by writing/studying flashcards for every ppt slide/term he gives us. It is a lot of work, but put in the effort, and he'll reward you with a good grade. He curves pretty much a whole letter grade at the end of the semester.
he's pretty chill. lot's of dad jokes. tries pretty hard to engage the class so try to talk in his class
The professor is great! He makes lectures engaging and provides all the necessary resources to help us get a passing grade. Students who struggle often have poor attendance and don't practice enough with the quizzes or practice tests he offers. He does his part to help us, but the rest is up to us.
Roelke's Zoology class requires a lot of memorization, but his engaging lectures and willingness to curve exams make it manageable. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep.
Roelke is a 10/10. Attendance isn't required, and at first I used to skip every lecture and still get a good grade. However, the lectures are just so entertaining that I have to go to all of them. He always looks like he is on the verge of asking if you're "working hard or hardly working". He does have quizzes often, but they are easy.
This was a generally easy course that has PowerPoints, videos, textbooks, and study guides. There are quizzes weekly but they are generally easy and have a second attempt, tests as well but grades are curved. As long as you do your notes and practice with the homework assignments, you should be fine.
Dr. Roelke was super easy going. Simply by submitting an assignment you would get at least a B. His tests were easy if you understood the learning objectives and the one group project took 10 minutes of work. He seems to be a nice guy and does his best to keep the class engaged.
He made all the material relatable and try's to get the class engaged. His attendance isn't mandatory but went anyways because I honestly enjoyed being there. Definitely a joker and knows his material well. Great professor and will be taking him again next semester
Professor Roelke was great! You're graded on five online quizzes, four in-person quizzes, your lab grade, a signature assignment, and four exams. The online quizzes are unlimited attempts he also graded all the exams on a curve. All in-person quizzes were right before the exams. He's very understanding when life happens if you communicate with him
He is very good at lecturing, making the lectures relatable and relevant, and making this subject understandable for everyone. As long as you keep up with the work that isn't difficult and you attend the lectures, there is no way you can fail. He can be quick-tempered and sarcastic, which, if you have him for the lab, is the only bad side
His lectures were not mandatory, but they were entertaining and definitely contained information that was not available on the powerpoints, but were on the exams. Lectures were easy to follow and understand. There were 4 exams and one final project, all of which were easy and straight foward. He also allowed a curve on the exams which helped.
He is a very nice guy! Does not attribute grades to mean we are "smart" or "right" for science like other professors. Also, he is humble and kind! Country folk kinda guy
He is good at instructing you on what you must learn to excel in exams and homework. You get multiple tries on the homework and have your lowest grade dropped. Even without these, the material is easy to understand and should not be an issue when tested if studied. Just as expected from an online course, the material is self-taught. Would recommend
Roelke is awesome, keeps your attention during lectures and answers any questions you have. Tests are only hard if you don't study, so make sure to do that. Tests are based off of the slideshows he does in class.
His class is only difficult if you can't lock in. One of the funniest professors I've ever had and he explains content clearly and uses examples more familiar to students. Lenient grader for sure, he drops assignments and rounds grades. He somehow managed to make his lab entertaining too. If you get the chance to take any of his classes you should!
I've taken Roelke for two classes now and he's honestly one of the best professors at the university. His classes can be material heavy but the material itself is not difficult. Lecture isn't mandatory but his lecture style is so interesting you'll want to go regardless. Grade consisted of exams(that were curved) and a final project. Overall,10/10
Dr. R was very clear in his expectations and grading policies. He gives plenty of materials and extra ways to learn and review the materials. He's flexible and caring. Comes off strong at first but truly is willing to work with you. Always available if needed.
This professor is one of the best! Always responds quickly to emails. The test and quiz are simple and easy to take. Study material simplified and lectures so easy and will help you remember things using lectures and study guides and looking over the vocabulary. 10/10 would recommend!
Great dude, super funny but sometimes TOO chill. Basically gave us barely any info on the group project til last min … super easy tho. Almost impossible to not get an A.
I was worried about biology before taking this course. I'm so thankful to have had this professor. His course is easy to navigate and he gives plenty of supplemental materials to help you learn. Quizzes have 2 attempts which really helps. Lowest quiz and exam grade are dropped so I did not have to take the final which was so nice! Highly Recommend
One of my fav classes at UTA!! It is a difficult class, but you will be fine if you study the slides. Lec exams are directly from the slides, and sometimes, he tells you what will be on them. Memorize the info on the slides, and you'll be fine. He's also really funny and shows us entertaining videos, so it keeps lec fun as well.
Very fast paced prof, but most of the slides are either images or unnecessary info. Prof Roelke will specifically tell you what's on the exams, which are practically word-for-word from the slides. The final replaces the lowest exam. He also has graded practice exams with multiple attempts, but you won't see the correct answers. Very funny otherwise
The professor explained topics clearly and told us exactly what to study for exams, which made preparation easier. His jokes made the class fun and helped me remember the material. The course materials were well organized, even in the fast summer format. Overall, the class was engaging and enjoyable. I would take another course with him for sure.
Roelke was funny during lectures but I believe that he was a bit too chill with us. We got no information besides what was on canvas for the group project, which made it difficult. If there was some sort of discussion on assignments and maybe even examples given, it would be better. I also didn't enjoy the lack of study guides. "Study everything"
Limnology was not super interesting tbh but he did make certain parts entertaining. The lack of study guides was not my favorite aswell because it's a lot of content and there's no indication as to what the objectives are for the exam. Otherwise, I would take again
He was pretty chill. I stopped going to his class and just went for the tests, he doesnt really post what slide they are on so you are just supposed to go through the whole thing. He skips some slides but hes funny. I actually loved this class!
