Knowledgeable and clear. The midterm was easy (no tricks). What you see is what you get with this guy.
hated this teacher more than any one before. went way too fast in lecture, and had to teach everything outside of classroom.
Reads his notes word by word (literally) . Has no confidence teaching in front of a class or explain any concepts. Made us a buy an extrememly expensive textbook, which was never used. His midterms and final were fairly straight forward, which made the course somewhat tolerable.
Corey is a great prof, epecially for the required technical material from 301. His grading and marking are fair. If you attend class and do his assigned homework you'll do just fine. He is the most available and helpful prof I have yet to encounter at UW. Any problems or questions he's always there for you.
His lectures are fairly clear, he is amusing and boring at the same time, but leaning more toward the later. VERY pedantic, what's the point of making you come to class if all he does is read from his notes?? He is full of malice when it comes to marking. Lost in a world of indifference corves, cannot think out of the box as a real economist.
Corey is a good guy. A bit shy but very fair which I can't say about so other Econ profs.
Had him for a month (couldn't teach for the rest of the course b/c of personal reasons) but he was great. No text, read the lecture notes - 5/6 of his questions were directly from the lecture - word for word. 2 assignments (10% each), 30% midterm, 50% final. He warned us that this course is hardest of the micros (i.e. 201, 401). I didn't find it so
im a econ student and he was the WORSE prof i have ever had in my life! 2 midterms which were really difficult, after the first midterm 1/3 of the class was failing.
he is nice guy but not a good prof. very very very boring... he never reply email back. his tests are tough but he is generous to give some part marks~
A complete waste of time and really boring...if you do take this course save yourself from being bored and just stay home and read your textbook, after all Professor Van De Waal only reads off of his slides (I promise you won't miss anything).
One word: Boring. His inability to maintain student's interest coupled with his monotone voice all contribute to a horrific introduction to the world of economics. That's not to say he doesn't know his material. It would also be nice if he returned phone calls/e-mails...avoid if you can, don't go to class if you can't avoid.
Interesting theoretical course with an instructor that provides excellent notes. Prof Van de Waal is kind, available and cares about students. I?m thinking of transferring from math to econ because of him.
Nice guy, extremely willing to help students, all you have to do is ask. Lectures despite his efforts to be funny can be very boring and tetious. Read from the txtbook and course notes and you'll do fine guaranteed.
teaches everything to the detail, thus when exam time, you knw how to solve a problem. Very Helpful and Nice.
Extremely helpful and cares about his students a lot!
AMAZING teacher! He is so helpful and wants his students to succeed. He is always willing to help and even plans out sessions where you can ask questions. Make sure to look over his problem sets because those are helpful for the midterms/exams. If you attend his classes, there shouldnt be a problem to earn 80+%
I am a non-Econ guy, and being in CS, had to complete an elective string..and I'm glad I took his class. I couldn't attend most lectures so I went to his office hours, really helpful guy. Easy assignments, a little bonus of midterms; the final was kind of hard, but study the course notes well and you'll do fine.
Likes to show a clip from "A Beautiful Mind". Always talks about game theory, and randomly talked about Einstein. Brutal marker.
Very solid prof - easily top 5 Economics Profs at UW. Corey is very helpful and provides high quality office hours for his students. Lectures aren't the sexiest things and can get a little long and boring, but the material isn't that interesting and he does provide consistent entertainment to keep it fresh and enjoyable. Highly recommended!
I am shocked by some of the negative comments here. I think he is by far the best Econ prof I had. He really cares about his students (he runs an econ clinic which HE hosts) and will explain a problem in a way that is simple and clear. His tests and slides are very straightforward and he preps you for higher level econ courses. REALLY GREAT PROF!
This guy is a great prof. He explains concepts very well in class and gives extremely useful slides. He does read from his slides ALOT, but he also tests you on the same slides so it's worth the effort to go to class. Pretty easy on the exams, doesn't really try to "get" anybody. I would recommend him for 201.
Great proff best Econ I had at UW. You MUST attend class & his Econ Clinic to do great on the course. Uses his OWN notes. Extreamly helpful and available If you choose take advantage of it. Inserts jokes to keep material as fun as it can be.
Easy class. He does not use maths as he is not very good at using it. It's fine if you are not doing 401 because if you do, what he teaches is too descriptive. He just wants to be popular and earn good evaluation. I would not take his class if you are taking 401 after, otherwise, you will get killed!
An interesting man, who understands economics at a really deep, fundamental level. Think John Nash meets Paul Krugman. Corey is a great guy, a great lecturer and always available to help out students in need. Easily the best prof in the Econ department.
This professor is the best that I had in Waterloo. He knows what he has to teach. He has made his own slides which are the only things you should know for your exam. He gives practice questions before each exam and the exam is the same as his practice questions with little bit of changing in the numbers. You will soon get used to his love for wife.
i cant believe i got a mark in the 80s in his class!! i really should've got 90-something since the course is brutally easy. as far as teaching goes, he has his own slides so you don't have to waste money buying textbooks, and his slides are all you nee d for the midterms and final
Prof just wants students to like him. Wastes lots of time off-topic, talking about TV shows, wife, concerts, etc. Then even puts these on the tests! Not very fair marker either, really just cares if your final answer is right (despite claiming to be better than TAs). Dumbs down all the math too so nobody can say he doesn't teach well.
His stories were awesome unless you don't like off-topic issues and just want to finish the class. Marking is fair. If you can't reproduce the mathematical steps with accuracy then it's your fault. It's fair that 1 mistake will be costly, but also easy 100 if correct. Very helpful outside of class and will teach you the basics if not math major
Awesome teacher. Absolutely amazing. No need to buy a text book because his slides are so detailed. I got a 90 in this course and I can't wait to take 301 with him. I'm in AFM PA and not an econ major btw.
This man is so good, he should win a Nobel Prize.
He is the best econ prof I ever had in UW. Class is very interesting. If you are pursuing econ major, must take his 301! *** Must attend the lecture and use his office hours and clinic.. tests and exam is fairly normal if you understand all the materials he taught in class.
Listen...I know people have been saying he's great and all, but he is NOT an easy marker.
Honestly, whoever thinks this professor is bad is just an idiot. Not only does he save you money by having all the materials presented with his slides, but he is a great speaker and does his best to keep things interesting. The exams are dead easy; he gives you practice problems and they're based off of that. You will regret passing on him.
This man teaches well. However a BRUTAL marker. He does not care how you reached the answer. He does not give part marks. Those who are already struggling to keep their average on 75, do NOT take him. He will bring your average to an embarrassing digits! I took 201 with him and I don't know why I took 301 and now I am in General Economics!
His exams are fair/easy and all the information necessary is included in his slides (thus eliminating the need to purchase the textbook). Just go to class and follow the notes.
Definitely do NOT take this course with him if you have any other choice. Uses his own notes for teaching but literally reads off them the whole class. HE DOES NO MATH. Just shows you in his notes and tends to skip some steps. You will not be prepared for ECON401 if you take this. Trust me.
Great prof! If you put in the time, you will do great. If you slack off, then well that's your own fault and you'll whine about it but it will be your own fault. He's the academic advisor for econ majors so I think it's BS that he doesn't prepare you for 401. He does math and expects you to know how to do calculations...duh..it's econ! :P
The man is a champ! I mean, he actually tries to keep the half of the class that shows up interested and his tests are pretty fair. You should take this course with him for sure.
Nice guy, but it seemed like he was not very good or interested in teaching, at least for 101's. He literally just reads from his slides, which he summarizes from the textbook. He copies everything down to the graphs. Classes became boring, people stopped coming. However, he is very helpful when you have a question, with lots of help offered.
An interesting fellow. Could use some enthusiam..but overall, he's cool.
Brilliant man! Absolutely brilliant - I have no doubts Dr. Van de Waal will go on to win the Nobel Prize!
Very helpful prof. Explains very well.
If you're a math major this should be a very easy course, if not you might need to put more time in the math related examples. Definitely one of the best econ profs at Waterloo!
He is a nice guy! tests are based on textbooks.
Very nice prof and is clear in his teaching. Midterms and assignments were fair and based on his course notes. Final exam was tricky but he bell-curved it. Students with strong mathematical skills definitely have an advantage in understanding the material. Overall, definitely a wonderful prof!
VERY NICE PROF!! RELATIVELY HIGH MARKS.
Great lecturer, doesn't try to trick you. Cool dude to talk to outside of class. Nice guy.
What an amazing professor. He presented the material well, provided comprehensive online notes, and kept class interest. He truly cares about his students, and was easy to talk to. I would definitely take another course with this prof. Also, if you do the practice questions you will be prepared for the exams.
Best teacher in the world
Amazing prof! I can't believe he used to be a baker at. I will never look at pastries the same way again.
Hands down the best econ prof I've had. Doesn't try to trick you. Supplies you with course notes instead of regurgitating a textbook. Do the problems and study the course notes and you'll do great. Go to class for exam hints. Very helpful in office hours as well.
Great professor. No textbook, provides all the notes himself. Key is to attend classes, as trying to learn from the slides on your own, although possible, is highly advised against. Keeps class fairly engaged, not hard to pay attention. Taking 301 with him next term.
great teacher. No textbook, only useful notes.
He is AWESOME!!! With his useful and detail notes, as long as you review them carefully and study well with the practice questions, it is no problem to get a 80+, even a 90+. Specially for the final, the exam is fair and not hard at all. He explains his materials pretty clear and he is welcome any students to his office hours for help.
clear lecture and helpful outside of class! Fair exams and a great person!
Very good professor. He uses notes that he has compiled and covers course material very clearly. He is also very helpful during office hours. If you learn his notes and attend his office hours, you will likely get a very good grade.
Great prof! Cares about his students and exams are fair.
I think he's losing his touch. For super math-y students his classes make sense, but for the rest of us, his "course notes only, no textbook" policy leads to low success. His course notes do not have fully worked out examples. Thinks a BIT too much of himself, but he IS a nice person.
Easy course easy prof. You don't need the textbook. Just study off his powerpoints because they're EXACTLY THE SAME as the textbook. Don't need to go to class unless you really don't understand something. For midterm and finals, just study off previous exams. Super easy 90+.
Best professor at UW. Professor Corey is hands down the most down to earth, brilliant, humble professor I have ever had. Take a course with him if you can!
good prof. how fun can you actually make an econ class? it's bound to be boring. But he made it fairly interesting due to his good personality
He get confused by simple math, and constantly mixes up the +/- signs in equations. Doesn't answer emails.
Actually it's not easy to get high score in this course since there are too many things covered, but easy to pass anyway. Corey's course is funny and interesting. However, he seems not so helpful, reply my email after two weeks! Hard to book an appointment!
Best econ prof at waterloo. You get the most bang for your buck. No textbook but thats a good thing since you learn many different concepts in depth in less time. If you actually want to learn a lot, take this guys class, you wont regret it!! He gives homework questions (optional) but if you do them you'll be sure to get atleast a 80 in his class.
Best econ prof at UW. He's really nice, helpful and hilarious. His lectures are clear and he uses real life examples in his lectures, which is really interesting. Exams are fair and you can get a good grade if you go to class, read the lecture notes and do a couple homework questions for practice, which is optional. And there is no textbook!
Most relaxing course in UW ever not because of the subject but him !!! If you are mathies, an easy 80 is absolutely granted. Everything which specifically mentioned in slide is in the exam. I would definitely take his class again !!! Highly recommended if you are not too interested in Econ.
The course was super easy - no assignments and only three multiple choice tests. Corey is hilarious and explained the concepts very well.
great guy
Dude can teach but the final was really tough!
Corey is really helpful! The exams are pretty fair, and if you read the textbook and do assigned study guide questions you should be fine.
Great prof, really cares about his students and is very approachable. Would recommend him. Class has a lot of content but he covers everything in his lectures so there are no surprises on tests
Terrific guy, absolutely would recommend. Love this dude
Wonderful prof! Only had him for a month so far but I can already tell he cares about his students. He's funny, can make jokes, and is very knowledgeable!
He is a really helpful and super caring professor. Highly recommend!
Very decent prof. great lecture and fast response to email Organized lecture notes no textbook required
Not a good professor, should not be part of this program. what he taught is not useful to me.
Funny guy who definitely knows his stuff about economics. No textbook required, easy to get a good mark. Great prof overall.
His lectures can be pretty boring but the lecture slides are well organized. He clearly defines midterm material and gives useful practice problems. The assignments take some time to do but they are very interesting. Three midterms and three assignments with no final. Study the lecture slides and you will be fine.
Super nice and understanding, modules are fun to go through too.
Awesome prof, who genuinely loves the material he teaches. Tries to makes the lectures easy to follow and engaging so students can also like the content. Real gem of a prof, and doesn't have any mandatory textbooks as his slides are adequate. Clear and organized lectures, provides students with practice problems with accompanying solutions. A+ Prof
Literally the best prof I've ever taken in UW. I'm a 2017 alumni, taken his ECON301 and 472. He is funny, I loved his videos and jokes at the beginning of the classes. Really gets my day going. I read through his thesis and that was what changed my life. I am so grateful for Prof. Van De Waal. I would love to come back just to take his class again
His lectures were a blast to watch.
Great professor!! I have gone out of my way to take his courses. His teaching style is great. Makes complex content easy to understand. You can tell he loves his job and it makes for a wonderful educational experience.
