This professor does not lecture about what is on the test. The tests are heavily weighted and have multiple questions that have not been reviewed. If you want to read the entire book and teach yourself, take this professor. She has extremely high expectations for her students who are in an intro class.
The tests that she gives us have nothing to do with what we work on in class. Everyone I have asked in this class has been getting consistent D's and F's on the test and it is difficult to get a C. Other MCB 181 classes cover completely different content, she has absolutely unrealistic expectations of her students. I am a 4.0 student hoping for a C
It was so hard for no reason. The lectures are pointless and boring. She lectures on nothing that is actually on exams. For reference, I attended SI sessions three times a week, sunday reviews, exam reviews, did all the course homework, read the text book and participated in class and still got a C in this class. EXAMS ARE SO HARD
She never listens to any feedback she is given by her students. Please please do not take this class with her. She literally judges you when you don't understand the material.
I do not recommend. Attendance is mandatory to receive points and she does not emphasize what's going to be on the exams. Lectures do not relate to exams whatsoever! Study guides aren't really helpful either. Exams are worth so much and really hard considering that it is an INTRO class. I barely passed considering that I am a straight A student.
Good luck! By far the most challenging class I have taken. Tests weigh a huge amount. Withdrew since there is no way I wad going to pass. You'll earn a C if you're lucky.
Unreasonably difficult for an intro course. Exams average Ds. Its a "flipped classroom" aka u gotta learn all the material on ur own and go to the mandatory lectures to learn nothing useful. She reads through slides very quickly and briefly and spends 90% of class time on group work and icebreakers. Only surviving since I took ap bio previously.
Although Dr.Gray is a nice person she clearly doesn't understand that what she is teaching doesn't align with her exams. Everything covered in class is very baseline compared to what is tested on the exam. For being an intro biology class, this is ridiculously difficult. If you are going to take this class do not take her!
Dr. Gray is a nice person but her averages on the exams are always in the 60% the lectures lightly touch on the concepts on the exams. very difficult take this course with another professor if you want above a D
DO NOT DO IT!!! There are so many better profs out there!! The tests are not literally not real-her averages were all in the 60s i kid you not!!! And she doesnt curve at all!! Just seriously save yourself. Stay safe.
She hasn't brushed up on her Biology knowledge, so there are often errors in her lectures that she goes on to incorrectly teach. She also gives very vague study guides for the exams and tells you to "review everything" if you want to do well. I studied and did well in the class, but beware - it's a lot of self-teaching and SO much group work.
This class is a joke. Test averages are low D's to F. If that doesn't tell you enough then I don't know what does. You are expected to teach yourself and know the material. The slides don't match up with the exams whatsoever but Professor Gray expects a whole lot from her students.
You are very much expected to teach yourself the material. The lectures move very quickly for an intro class and it is difficult to be expected to follow. The average test grades for the class so far have been 64 and 66.5 for about a 300-person class. These averages weren't upsetting at all to the teacher either.
Prof Gray is a very nice person but she is not a great teacher. She assigns a lot of homework that will not be worth much at all. She often has errors in her exams that people contest so points are given back on almost every exam (still a D/C class average though) and the exams are worth 60%. Beware.
Average exams are low Cs and Ds. Professor does nothing to change that and expects us to know material when it is presented so poorly. I recommend taking another professor that can lecture a bit better.
Exams are weighted heavily and has major impact. Dr. gray is nice but I hope she takes these reviews in consideration to make changes in teaching styles and slides. She is guaranteeing her students with a B if we keep up with all of our other work and so I hope majority of her class gets to pass with at least a B.
After two years at this univerity I can confidently say that This is the absolute worst professor as well as class that I have taken in my life. If you take this class prepare to not learn a single thing in the lecture and have to learn everything yourself. The exams that are given are overly difficult and dont reflect the material.
Gray gives her students several opportunities and resources for them to improve their grade. You're allowed a two-sided cheat sheet for every exam. She drops several attendance, quiz, a reflection, and an exam. She offered 2% extra credit to your total grade for showing up to SI sessions. If you ever need help, reach out and you'll get it.
She's actually the worst professor I've ever had. I've never done so poorly in a class before now. I've put so much work into this class, and I currently have a 61%. She puts in 0s for assignments and tests that we haven't even taken yet. I'd learn more if I taught myself & didn't go to class. She's beyond confusing & the learning team can't help.
Lecture has over 300 students, the average exam scores are always in the 60's, what's on the study guide is never helpful for the exams and exams are worth 60% of the grade. She goes through the lectures extremely fast and gives no time for note taking. Extremely difficult for an intro course. Relies heavily on doing everything outside of class.
She is a nice person, but she doesn't really teach during lecture, she just reads slides. Attendance is required so lectures feel like a waste of time. You have to teach yourself everything outside of class. Exams are very detailed unlike her lectures. SI sessions are where I actually learned the concepts for this class because they actually teach.
She really is not a bad professor, she gives a lot of recourses to help review for exams. It really is how much effort you give. Go to SI sessions and make a good cheat sheet. She offers extra credit. Only critique is there is a lot of group work where I would prefer content review.
Dr. Gray is very passionate about biology. However, it is obvious she is a new professor. Her lecture slides contain very little information. The bulk of the exam material can only be learned from reading the textbook. Be prepared to do group work every day in this class. Her exams are difficult and the wording makes questions especially tricky.
Dr. Gray is nice person, but horrible at teaching. Lectures are mandatory attendance, and she just reads off the slides, feels like a waste of time. Her exams are super detailed, and do not match her lectures. I've done well on the homework but exams make up most of your grade, so if you have test anxiety.... good luck. Self taught myself evrything
She is the sweetest person ever, but the worst teacher. She does not teach this class like it's an intro to MCB. The tests are incredibly difficult and she expects you to read a ton of the textbook. Her lectures are all over the place and are so confusing. You will have to teach yourself everything. Do not take.
Dr. Gray is really nice, but she just reads off the slides and doesn't actually teach. We do practice problems in class for attendance, and she is perfectly happy when over half the class gets a question wrong. Same with exams. 65% exam averages and she takes forever to put exam grades in the grade book. Overall, the worst bio experience ever
This is the most difficult class I have had to take and it is due to the teaching. Gray presents the content rather than teaching and the exams are SO much more in-depth than anything we go over in class. The exam average has been low D's for the first 3 exams and she does not care, nor offer a curve. No exam prep either. Totally self-taught.
She does not teach at all. Hardest class ever. Average grade for the class on exams was a D.
Dr. Gray is very sweet, but she is not very good at teaching information. The test averages are always very low and she offers no curve. Even after going to all review sessions, the test questions are of topics that were hardly covered. Would not recommend taking, but if you have to then get ready for some ASMR from the way she talks. lol
Passionate about the subject and teaching but has no clue what she is doing it seems. Little to none of the information given in lectures is actually what you will see on exams. Class exam score averages are always low and she does nothing to try and change that. Brutal teacher and I would recommend any other professor for this course.
Easily the worst class I have ever taken, for reference I am currently looking at a B.She is an incredibly kind professor but that's about where the positives end.Her lectures are incredibly baseline if even and rarely go over what's on the exam, you have to self teach from the textbook. Study guides aren't useful and lots of the class is busy work.
Insanely difficult class, Lectures need to be redone and reevaluated to match exams. Wording of exams are confusing. Most of class is failing with low exams scores and many complaints from students.
Took this class as an online accelerated course. Her TA is pretty much the only one who responded to students and graded the discussion posts. Lecture videos, discussion posts, quizzes, and exams. None were too hard, especially for an accelerated course. I suggest taking her online course. We had a textbook but it was not really necessary.
She is such a nice person, she does not know how to teach. She just reads off the slides and expects us to understand everything she throws at us. Exam averages are always in the 60s and nothing changes to help us. SI Sessions and teaching yourself is the only way to know the material and even then it's not enough. Would not recommend her.
She doesn't teach well, she goes through her slides pretty fast and her slides are pretty hard to understand as it is. I wouldn't recommend her.The extra credit opportunities she gives are nothing to compare to the amount of extra credit we get added to our grade. Extra credit is always 0.3, only once was there a 1% for a 500-1000 word reflection.
Dr Gray recommends to go through the study guide for her final exam but the study guide provides little to no help when it comes to her exams. Take anyone else to save your sanity and grade.
It is probably one of the most difficult INTRO courses taken, everything everyone says is true. Rarely are the exams about what we learned; lectures make no sense and you are expected to teach yourself from the online test books. Gray is an amazing human, but need to reevaluate this course and its teaching because of inconsistencies in teaching.
In total I believe gave 3.2% extra credit. Her exam averages are about 65%. The exam prep material is simply not provided. I am an engineering student taking challenging classes and this INTRO course is the worst class I have taken. Poorly worded exams, a lot of group projects, big lectures, professor does not teach you have to teach yourself.
She is not the best professor. She needs to learn how to teach. Her exams are all over the place. Although she did offer a bunch of extra credit. Only reason I got an A was because of the 3-4% extra credit. I would have gotten a B but the extra credit boosted by grade from an 86-90.
dont take her. the wording of the exams were so confusing you need to have a really good cheat sheet. i never read the textbook and never felt the need to. i think im getting a B+ in this class and its because i did so bad on my first two tests, otherwise i wouldve gotten an A. its not EXTREMELY difficult but it is difficult.
Make your front and back cheat size three font and copy and paste every single thing from the slides. Do every "achieve" problem and end group work. Textbook is helpful, however wouldnt use as main source. You should self-teach yourself with YouTube and the SLIDES. Hard for freshman, recommend taking as a sophomore or junior.
Dr. Gray's lectures are boring, and the information sometimes goes against what is in the textbook. There was nothing exciting about the class. I don't think she taught well, but she was always changing the class to try to get students to succeed.
I almost died taking this class but at least she's a nice person
The class must be self taught throught the given readings given each week since she does not teach the content over the course of lecture. She gives too much time for group discussion instead of teaching students the concepts. When studying for exams, she simply says to study for everything instead of giving specific concepts to focus on.
Nicest person in the world, but she is a brand new professor. She's still figuring her teaching style out, but she doesn't actually teach. SI sessions. SI sessions. SI sessions. GO TO SI SESSIONS. They are the biggest reason I diid pretty well, since they actually teach you the content.
She is just mid. If you do the readings and the achieve assignments, you can understand the material. The lectures are not going to be helpful as she runs through them fast and then has us do group work that sometimes seems unhelpful. She's the nicest person ever, she just doesn't do much teaching
Gray is very nice, but lectures are just bad. She treats a 400 person college class like a high school bio class. She expects students to be at a high level, she makes you do group-work, and there's a big discrepancy when it comes to lecture material and exam material. GO TO SI SESSIONS. The TAs sometimes host exam reviews as well - go to them.
She doesn't teach anything during lectures
she basically does not teach at all, depend on the SI leaders and TAs
Grays teaching style is not optimal. The exams are cumulative so if you want to basically take a mini-final every-time, have fun. Her exam questions are worded poorly, lectures are straight from the textbook readings(literally), and a lack of depth is a constant on difficult topics. Be prepared for a tremendous amount of outside learning.
Had to rely on the SI to learn everything in this class. Has guest speakers in almost every lecture taking up a lot of learning time. Does not do reviews for the exams. Does not explain anything in detail.
Guest speakers took up 2/4 , 1.5 hr class days we had between exams. It almost seemed like a joke. At the end, "None of this is on the exam." Didn't help and all we did after was go over content that was recycled questions from previous lectures for 5 mins. The whole class feels like a waste and i'd rather study in the time it takes me to go.
Things on textbooks, recorded videos, and prep quizzes (homework) are ALWAYS on the exams but never talked about in class. She has exams scheduled right after Easter and Spring Break which has been stressful and time consuming. Expect to do outside research and hours of study prep. Go to SI sessions, they basically tell you exam content.
She doesn't explain anything on the slides, she just reads them to the class when they came directly from the textbook. Her exams are worded horribly. The only reason I am not failing is because of going to the SI sessions. I would avoid this class if you can.
Dr. Gray is a very kind professor, but it seems she puts more work into making her exams somewhat difficult, than her actual lectures...
I have never left a review before on rate my professor, but I have to warn about this one. Assignments guidlines are not clear and it is extremely improbable to get 100% on any assignment. In order to do good, you must watch the lectures and note every word she says, read every chapter of the textbook, and then independently research the topics.
very nice person but as a teacher is very unclear in her directioins. shell ask you for an "easy" test option without a cheat sheet, or a hard test option with a cheat sheet but even if you chose the easy option, what will be on the exam is not clear and it seems like the questions are proposed to purposely trick you with a minor word or tweak.
terrible
Corin Gray is a very passionate and educated professor yet moves way too fast through the material in class, with long lectures, boring activities, and incredibly difficult exams as she writes them so challenging. A class with 400 students is hard making her never available to students outside of class for help and never answers emails promptly.
Each of her exams are cumulative. So Exam 2-4 have questions that are from the first exam and the previous exams. She had an exam that was the Monday right after Spring Break and the class average was a 50%. Her final can only raise your grade, but definitely have a good group for your group project, it's only 8% of your grade.
You could get 100% on every assignment in the class including the final project, yet still not get an A unless you have an 80% average for the exam portion. This is slightly concerning and disheartening when you consider that the class average is usually around 55-70%. So a majority of her class is barely passing or not passing.
I'm a CS major, but needed a lab science so I took this and the hw was super easy and the tests were doable if you studied for max of 4-5 hours beforehand. Not the easiest supporting lab science, but I had this class on the backburner and it was pretty easy. We were offered about 3% extra credit which is nuts.
90% of the stuff I learned was from SI sessions and YouTube videos, lectures were set up horribly and the class was super test-heavy with no help from her to help you with exams prep. Averages on exams were low on most exams but her excuse was one is dropped when everyone averages grades that would barely get a B in the class.
DO NOT TAKE. Expect to teach yourself everything for the exams because she teaches it at an intro level and expects you to know how to apply it on a tough level. Start studying NOW.
Scored low 60s on every single exam only was able to get a B with the extra credit offered and the one dropped exam. Exams are graded off of hypotheticals that can not be found in the text book. Put in a regrade request and was told to kick rocks. Extremely hard class but you can pass if you teach yourself everything.
Lectures are long and boring, I have not received a passing grade on any of my tests despite studying with her ta's for hours. She will just read of slides then give you tests that have nothing todo with literally anything she teaches you.
She is not understanding at all - need a letter from the dean to get anything excused. To succeed in the class, you need to pay attention to any scientific studies/disease pathways she talks about and work really hard on getting the right answers to discussion and then you'll be fine. I didn't read the textbook either and it was okay.
I did not score well on tests because she is not a good teacher, although she is a lovely person, I cannot retain any information from her. I even went to all of the SI sessions and spent hours studying. She gave a lot of extra credit, but it did not help that much.
You can tell she cares about her students but has no idea how to teach. You will spend half of class doing group work or practice problems, and when she actually lectures, she will get way too in-depth that you lose the whole concept. Exam questions are meant to trick you. Just save yourself and find another way to take the class.
1 semester later and I still think about how awful this class was. I ended with a 89.8% and I couldn't do anything about it since the "0.02%" credit throughout the semester should've been enough." I wish she weren't a professor for this subject since no one seems to like her teaching or scores well.
I know this is a flipped class but she seriously does little teaching in class that pertains to the exams. The questions on the exams are weird and conceptual questions which i'm sure everyone gets wrong. Get any other teacher.
Dr. Gray loves her students. She gives some extra credit. For an introductory course, this class is hard. She will give you two options at the beginning of the semester. Either get to use a card for exams or dont. We chose not to, as she claimed the exams would be made easier. Liar. And her practice exams? Useless. Content isnt the same.
the worst professor ive taken in all of my years in college. ive graduated and im coming back here to confidently say that. sweet person but she does not belong in the teaching profession.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER! She only read from the slides, the best way to learn is if you do the weekly readings. Always go to SI sessions as that was the only way I understood the material.
When that class average for exams is constantly around 60%, it's not the hundreds of students fault, that is on the professor. Test are very conceptual. Lectures are a waste of time, but you can't miss them because of your attendance grade, which in this class you're going to need all the points you can get. If you hate yourself, take this class.
The class is really bad, and the class average is a 60% for the exams. Her class is also lessons ahead of the other mcb classes. It doesn't even matter how hard you study, you will still get a bad grade on the exams. She also puts questions that were not taught on the exams. Her ratings are true.
Dr. Gray is a nice person, but I believe that this is the worst class I have ever taken. The class average for the first exam (perhaps the easiest exam of the class) was a 69.7%. For the second midterm, as Dr. Gray notes, "Our class average was a 56.3%, with a standard deviation of 22.67%. 60% of the total grade is determined by just 4 midterms.
SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH
Out of all the teachers at this school, this was the one that truly crushed my dreams. 60% of the class was based on exam grades. Most people averaged about 55%-65% at this rate you'd be lucky just to pass. I lost my academic scholarship because of her class. So please do not make the same mistake I did, schedule early and take someone else.
Lectures are slides only, goes over info so fast it's impossible to take notes. TAs are useless, barely understand the material themselves. Homework is unnecessary and unhelpful. We are 2 units ahead of other classes. Other classes don't have free response on exams but we do. Exam average is so low E1:63.63%, E2:56.3% (other classes are 75-80%)
Avoid this proffesor!!!! She is not a good teacher by any means.
Professor Gray cares about her students a lot and is very understanding. However, I do not believe that she is a good professor, nor are her lectures good. She reads through the slides very fast and you are expected to do A LOT of work/ understanding outside of class to succeed. I would not recommend taking MCB 181 with her specifically.
This professor is AWFUL. Please avoid her and her course at all cost. She designs her Exams to trick you. She takes attendance and participation so seriously but during her lectures she does nothing but read off of slides and no new information is given. On her quizzes and practice exams you will never get the right answers unless you search for it
The professor seems nice, but her exams are brutal. The study guide barely helps only around 5 questions show up on the actual test. Most questions feel random or unrelated to what we covered. Studying feels pointless. Would not recommend unless you're ready to teach yourself the whole course.
Do not take this prof if you do not have to. This class should have been an easy A however her exams made that pretty challenging. Class exam averages were horrible (70.7, 61,63,63%) adds over 20% of cumulative information to each exam. Class and work for class is easy but not beneficial what so ever.
If you're not religious, now's a good time to pick one and start praying; those tests are no joke!
Most traumatic class ever! Your grade is 60% exams that are both multiple choice and short answer questions. She gives so much material to study and the study guide means nothing. Exam averages were always around 50% and she would not curve, she would instead say we were not trying hard enough. Even TA's found it hard to communicate with her
Corin Gray was a nice teacher, she is very sweet but she does not know how to teach a class. I have been stressed out about this class for the longest. majority of your grade is based on test. The TAs are more helpful then the ACTUAL teacher. She's a very sweet person, but she needs to do better as a teacher.
If you need to take MCB181, I would take any other professor. She does not have very engaging lectures and she doesn't explain the material well at all. She has a ton of guest speakers come in to class instead of teaching the actual content of the course. Everything I learned in this course I either already knew or taught myself.
avoid taking with this professor at all costs. she does not teach the second half of the semester and barely does at the start. you will have to teach yourself everything. if you have to take go to SI sessions. you will learn more there than the entire unit in her class. averages on exams were 15-20% lower than other professors. only 18% received A
If you want a professor who doesn't grade on time and prevents students from graduating on schedule, take this class. Many of us couldn't walk at commencement due to delayed grades, and there was no sympathy or urgency shown despite how important this moment was after four years of hard work.
This class was very hard and moved fast. Tests were tricky and the averages were low (one was a 56). SI sessions and TA hours are a must. She gave 3 bonus points total for things like attendance, probably because she saw how much we were struggling. Just try to get a different professor.
Dr. Gray cares so much about her students, and she's both a great professor and a great person. She will help you a lot during office hours if you're struggling with the material. Highly recommended!
Dr. Gray isn't as horrible as people say, but she is not the greatest professor for the average learner. She really is sweet, but I just think she has to change how she does the lecture and the slides. You just need to be willing to commit to studying for this class, and you should do fine. Just don't take a class that's hard at the same time.
Dr. Gray is a very sweet woman, and I feel like she takes criticism very well. She is always looking for ways to improve her class. However, there is a lot of homework, and you WILL need to do a lot of studying outside of this class to succeed. This class isn't for people who expect to get a good grade but not put in any effort.
Genuinely, the most difficult professor I have ever had. TRY NOT TO TAKE AT ALL COSTS. Choose the other professor for this class because this one rather have most of her exams be made up of trick questions to tank your grade instead of the actually concepts learned. She just reads off the slides the entire time but attendance is mandatory. YIKES.
She's genuinely a great professor. She offers many exam-prep resources and extra credit, and I found her lectures and office hours helpful. I recommend going to SI sessions, TA office hours, and especially her office hours. Other than that, this course is really dependent on how much you put into it, so expect to spend ample time studying for it.
The professor was a weird grader because her expectations for free-response questions were never clear. She graded assignments under the homework category that were never stated to be graded, and it was not in the syllabus that this counted as homework. Lectures and textbooks barely help, and I relied on SI sessions and Khan Academy.
