Extremely intelligent man!
Excellent professor.

Wonderfully engaging professor
One of the best teachers there. Passionate, intelligent, warm, and helpful.
He makes up his mind, through class participation, what your grade will be rather than upon your written work. If you participate actively you're bound to get an "A."
Smart man, open about himself. Liked how he integrated history and english together for his writing projects. You can tell he likes the 60's but I learned more about the 60's then in any other course.
He is amazing. He is part of why I became a teacher; I can only hope to be as effective.
Very intelligent and openminded...Theory was a hard class, but I never learned more in a class than I did with Cornel. I can apply what I learned to other classes.

Good thinker
Not what I expected.
unbelievable teacher, stimulates class towards reading very knowledgeable
He is difficult to approach with questions after class. He also heavily favors loud students to the complete exlusion of all others. He lectures well, but he makes his class seem harder than it really is so that he appears better. I was unimpressed.
Cornell Bonca is terrific - sign up for any and all classes he teaches - he ready solicits students' opinions on the topics he covers and never slams you if he disagrees. He's awesome.
Great Class. Brilliant Instructor. He structures the class in a way that allows the students to decide what to talk about. Final Exam and Mid terms are challenging but do-able. I definitely recommend this class.
This guy is so full of himself! It doesn't help that some kiss-ass students follow him around like he is Jesus either. If he would bring his attitude down about 10 notches, more people might appreciate his method. No doubt, he is brilliant, but it is hard to see that beyond his arrogant facade.

Uh, I don't know if he's as "hot" as the person below me said, but he really is a fantastic teacher, very encouraging and interesting. It's a pleasure being in his class.
Bonca is cool. He had some class attendance issues, which is usually fine, but we had to cut out a lot of material because of it. He's super nice and encourages discussion. I'd reccomend this class and Prof Bonca.
he missed too many classes, and didn't cut enough material. there just wan't enough time to go over all the books thouroughly. i could have gotten a better understanding of things if he cut more stuff out and spent more time on others.
His lectures are interesting, but when it came time for him to help me with my writing problems, he did not even try. He just scibbled comments, I couldn't even read most of them.
Very good and open-minded. He's a hard grader so make sure your work is good, but I've heard that if you are a graduating senior he won't fail you. I learned a lot from him.

Awesome teacher. Brilliant in many ways but has a campy side. If you take the time to ask him what's up either in class or during office hours, he's outstanding.
He is an awesome prof! He is knowlegeable of the material and holds stimulating discussions. His tests were fair, his choices of literary works were appropriate and always interesting, a lot of fun was had by all!
This is truly a brilliant man! I waould always leave his class feeling so much smater, and like I could go out and accomplish anything. I think in total I took him for 3, maybe 4 classes....amazing every time!
Nice professor. He seems to rush on the materials. I think I could have done better if i was allowed more time with each novels. His journals are easy points. The test are identifying quotes from the book.

He's tough: 2 papers and 2 exams, not enough time given on exams and essay topics were interesting but hard to get an A on.. I'm an A student and couldn't make past a B in his class. Lectures interesting though.
The best teacher I have ever had.
Brilliant & intriguing lecturer, but a little scatter-brained when it comes to other responsibilities (i.e. grading, office hours). Sometimes he can be very helpful when he attends his office hours, but you definitely have be persistent and show him that you are trying hard.
very good prof. lectures were more like class discussions. it was very easy to participate. paper topics were easy yet hard, but very interesting. tests were easy as long as you at least know the book, it's author, and what's going on in the novel.
Pick and choose which classes you want to go to. Pay attention to class discussion when you're there because it's the easiest way to know what will probably be on the exams. Two papers, a midterm, a final, and a journal. I didn't really mind taking the class, but would probably prefer a different professor.
Don't bother reading the books or going to class. Just get good lecture notes from anyone who is into this class and you'll get an A.

I feel cheated when I have to go to class or buy a book and then I don't get anything out of it. You can get someone else's notes and do just fine.
Very clear presentation and the lecture reinforced the reading materials.
I took several upper div classes with Bonca, and most of the other ratings are accurate. However, Advanced Writing Workshop was a phenomenal experience for me. One of my favorite professors.
his lectures are interesting and reinforce the reading but what you have to watch out for are his exams. he time them perfectly, 1 minute for each vocab (10 vocab) and 10 minutes for 4 quote identification which makes exactly 50 minutes. then when you ask for extra time he tells you "you should have manage your time better"
write as fast as you can on his test. read all the novel... they are great. he grades papers hard (picky about thesis so put extra time on it)if you go to class everyday and put time into papers its an easy B. go to class every day/participate/take your essays to him before they are due... hopefully get an A. interesting and open-minded.
Had to read lots of books and stories, but his lectures were good and fairly interesting. He helped you picture the stuff in your head, so you could understand it more. Exams were written with short answers and an essay on the final. Overall good teacher, but lots of reading!
Tough teacher, but his Theory class is worth the hard work.
This class has really hard material, but he makes it understandable. This class requires close reading and TIME. It was very useful especially for the Masters program.
Bonca is fantastic. He is engaging and very knowledgable, he is also a brilliant writer (look him up online, he has many articles published). Read the books (they are great) and be ready to put time into your essays. Highly recommended.
Brilliant, enjoyable lectures. Obviously cares that students understand the material, but expects you to put the time and effort in. High grading standards means that you won't be successful if you write your papers the night before they are due.
His lectures were great- although he was sometimes disorganized, he really knows and loves literature. Tests required more studying than I would have expected- lots of terms to memorize that we didn't use in class. He's a tough grader on papers. Not available through email since he has "so many students," but is flexible and has office hrs
HARD class, wonderful teacher, record the lectures, he was one of the most understanding and accomodating profs ever. Felt like he was my peer, not my superior. THIS CLASS TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND CRYING BEWARE! I think it's worth it though, Bonca is awesome. Be there every day though and KEEP UP WITH THE READING!!!!! Have fun!
He is a good professor. LOVED his lectures. Its hard to keep up with readings BUT most of the readings are common and I had read them before.Go to class it is a big help for the midterms and final.
I had him for 492 & 222. Even though the reading load seems like a lot, if you just GO to class and take notes, you don't even need to read. He isn't really interested in your own ideas on tests, he just wants to hear what he told you in lectures. Not a lot of outside work, a couple essay tests and 5-6 page papers. He's really smart, but boring.
u read a lot in this class. tests are based on most of the reading. you right essays about quotes so pay attention to all the quotes he mentions in his lectures!
I enjoyed his class. He is a good instructor. He is nice and helpful. He is energetic and passionate about literature. Class is predominatly discussion. 4 novels to read for first unit. Final exam is comprehensive and not hard. The five- seven page paper is not hard. Have two midterms and a final. First midterm= not hard(fiction). Class- EZ B.Take.
Was actually pretty encouraging and more personal than many other professors
In this class we had 1 paper, 2 midterms, and 1 final. I'm not sure how helpful he is one on one cause i'm one of those "quiet students". But he does grade pretty hard, I'm an A student and only get a B+ on the exams. Interesting class but I feel that it was to rushed and not enough time to dicuss in class.
His lectures are very interesting to listen to but once he allows a discussion -be aware to hear the wierd students come out, he does not control his discussions well. leaving it to go into wastful tangents. But once he does the teaching its wonderful. Grading is tough- tough to get an A but easy to get a b+. Workload is managable.
Excellent professor, extremely approachable and knowledgable.Timed mid-term and final are a bit stressful, but reasonable. One required paper. Very fair and interesting.
Bonca is an okay teacher, but his grading is terrible. He refuses to give higher than a 93 on papers. Don't expect to get an A on papers or this class. Pick someone else. I hate him now. If you do A work, don't expect an A on your paper.
Lectures were interesting and fun! I found a new love for books. Make sure you read the text, but his lectures are great for basic knowledge use on the tests. This class is great! Read the books, go to class, get an A! It's that easy. You get what you put into it.
He was an ok teacher. He didn't help so much for the exams. He wanted us to know everything for the exam. There are no study guides to study from. He wants us to listen to his lectures and do good on the test.
Professor Bonca is brilliant. His enthusiasm is contagious - he welcomes student participation and is very fair with expectations and grading. There is a mid-term, paper and final
God he's a fascinating professor! Very intense and incredibly knowledgeable about his subject. I also love that he really listens to students comments and if he is not clear what they mean, he says so. It shows that he is really listening and cares. He was a great great teacher and I hope to take him again.
Very enthusiastic, although I agree that his grading is unclear. I read every book that he assigned and I loved every one of them. However, after the B I got on the midterm, I realized that my own passion and efforts were useless. He never returns emails, he's never in his office, and he will not help you.
He's brilliant and fascinating. He gets you excited about the material. The novels chosen were very interesting and thought provoking. LOVE LOVE LOVEd his contemporary novel class :D
easy class. lots of video clips and excerpts from books you read throughout class. my bestfriend & I sat next to each other and talked everyday we never got in trouble once, haha he's pretty chill. midterms/final just alot of quality writing
A brilliant man! Take whatever you can with him!
dr bonca is good for intro courses; has the "it" factor for many neophytes but as long as you attend class, participate, read text (even if just before exams), and try to write clearly and concisely you will get a solid grade. if you are willing to "ride his wave" you will do well and he does grade well for decent writing
Good class; professor is into his material and helps you get into it, too. Allows lots of classroom participation; helpful feedback on writing assignments.
I love Dr. Bonca and would gladly take another course with him. It is evident that he really loves what he does and transfers that energy to his students. So far the best instructor I've had at CSUF.
Professor Bonca is by far, one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes you want to do well in his class and participate.
Bonca is an amazing professor. I'm not very into moderns, but he made it fun and interesting. Definitely knows his stuff. He's a fair grader and I would gladly take another class with him.
Bonca is very passionate about what he teaches; you can tell in the way he speaks about literature that he loves teaching. He's a bit of a tough grader, but as long as you know your stuff and you pay attention in class or read, you'll be fine. :)
He is a great professor! You can tell he really likes what he teaches and he makes class interesting. Two midterms and a paper and a final, if you took good notes just look over those before the tests and you'll be fine. He also emails back quickly and will help you with your final paper. Take him!
Professor Bonca is a genius and he inspires his students to work harder and think deeper. I have taken a class from him every semester I have been here. Read, speak up in class even if you're nervous and manage your time well on his exams.
Bonca is a great professor. He offers a lot of insight to helping his students write. Please note that: HE IS NOT AN EASY GRADER. His expectations are up there and his grading is spot on meaning a C is AVERAGE. I am an astounding writer and I am struggling to receive above average grades.
Prof Bonca is wonderful. He chose great works to discuss & he really encourages students to think deeper. He is not easy, but I definitely enjoyed his class.
This class was interesting. I really enjoyed the readings. The class discussions were really informative. Professor Bonca knew the readings very well and he was very engaged in the class discussions. The exams consist of recognizing passages from the readings and an essay question. Pay attention to the passages he discusses in class.
Good teacher. 1, 5 page essay at the end. An in-class and out-class journal for the whole semester. 1 midterm. Study his handouts and you will be fine.
One of the best professors i've ever had.
Best GE course I've ever taken. With that said, this class is pretty difficult. There is A LOT of reading but if you actually do the reading and take good notes on the lectures you will be fine.
This was a great class. I highly enjoyed the readings that were assigned. Professor Bonca is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic when discussing 20th century novels. The class is composed of lecture and class discussion which made the course amusing and engaging. Exams are based on passages and themes covered in class. Very interesting course.
He was a good professor. As long as you do the journal entries and understand the material you should atleast get a B.
Somehow, he managed to take all the literature from high school and make it fresh again. His lectures are extremely passionate. Also, he took the time to adapt his usual curriculum for a summer session rather than cram sixteen weeks of readings into five. He's also quite friendly if you talk to him..
Overall I thought this class was interesting. I enjoyed the readings. The lectures were informative and engaging. Yet I felt that we rushed through many of the novels. The exams are not too difficult. As long as you have a basic understanding on the assigned texts you should do well. It's difficult to get an A though.
Easy class to pass. His lectures basically cover everything on the midterm and final. He's a chill professor and not boring. I recommend his class. Bonca's only flaw, for me, is he didn't reply to my email.
Great class-awesome material-wonderful professor!
Professor Bonca is seriously amazing! He's so knowledgeable and holds multiple degrees, making him somewhat intimidating but also really awesome. His lectures are never dull and he's very clear as to what he wants you to gain out of the reading. Be prepared to read great book selections! You'll participate more than you usually do.
Super fun class. This will be my third time having him. Really engaging and encouraging style if you like participating in discussion, knowledgable with thought-provoking lectures if you don't. A novel a week sort of class so don't fall too far behind, but the readings are usually interesting anyways. Totally recommend him for the novel classes!
I enjoyed his class and all but 1 novel we read. I am so glad I took this class because it has opened my eyes to new and wonderful books. He is so smart and I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say. He grades fairly and offers good feedback. Final is cumulative so don't fall behind. Participation makes this a fun class.
I would skip his class. Honestly one of the most boring professors I've ever had at CSUF. He just goes on and on about the books we read in class. Some of the books were interesting but some I didn't even bother to open. I would recommend to find another English class/professor, if you can.
He had super interesting lectures prepared for this class. In class & out of class journal. We listened to music, watched movies, and discussed the novels that we were required to read. The midterm and final are open note, so take good notes and review the handouts. PARTICIPATE & go to class if you want an A.
Bonca is a pretty good professor. Knows his stuff. Attendance is taken with a sign-in sheet but somedays he doesn't pass one around. There's an in-class journal and an out-of-class journal. Pretty easy. Midterm is 3 short answers and 1 long answer. The final is the same thing. There's reading but I just used google. Bring book to class!
Bonca is a great professor. He is enthusiatic about the readings and makes them interesting. The class consisted of 2 midterm where you identify a passage and closely analyze it. One 5 page paper at the end and two take home essays for the final. Pay attention to the passages he reads in class and you'll be fine!
Prof. Bonca is outstanding! I was not much of a reader, but he inspired me to read and write more often. His lectures are the key to doing well on the exams; that and reading the books, but I'm a non-English major and I managed. 2 midterms, and 1 cumulative exam. In class writing on the books. Chooses pretty good American books. Great person.
The lectures are amazing. Good selection of books although way too many assigned; one too many essays assigned in this class as well.
This is Intermediate Creative Writing, but think of it more as a fictional-workshop class. If you are in the process of trying to write a fiction novel, this class is for you. Two stories (4 to 7 pages) and one revision of your story. No midterm, no final. Your homework is to write short critiques on the stories in class. 5 long critiques as well.
Bonca was my favorite teacher this semester! He was enthusiastic about the pop culture class! There was only a couple essays and the class was mostly music. A lot of writing with the journals but it's not hard. The class was amazing, enlightening, and the material we covered was interesting. The lectures were a little slow but it was overall great!
Professor Bonca is one of the best professors I've had in college. His lectures of the novels are very thorough and engaging. You can tell he is passionate about the course material and has a very laid back personality. All tests are free response/essay format and he's a tough grader, but I always felt prepared going into them!
Bonca has great lectures was a little frustrating. He didn't typically make any information available online. Consistent Email communication was also unreliable. The course schedule was constantly being updated and too many works were crammed in at the last minute only to be omitted from the lectures. While a good teacher, he is disorganized.
Prof Bonca is amazing! Definitely one of my favorite profs. I try and take him for every class. Hes one of the long time professors in the department, his lectures are interesting and the books we read were fascinating. He makes the discussions relevant to our lives. Some of the books in his classes became my all time favorites. Life changing!
Prof Bonca is super insightful and really helped me to understand and better appreciate the novels we read. Downside? If you miss a class, you're lost. Especially because he misses a lot of classes too. At the end of the semester, it felt like a big game of catch up.
Took his online English comp class this summer which was super chill, one paper a week based on reading assignments for that week. He gave a lot of feedback on my papers to help improve my grade. Hes a really tough grader but its worth it! Best of all theres no boring busy work like in other online classes.
Prof Bonca gave me great feedback on my papers and really helped me become a better writer. His online summer class was VERY relaxed and an easy A but I also learned how to write better. The writing prompts he uses are all different and he is very flexible if you want to write on your own topic. I highly recommend him for 301!
I really recommend Professor Bonca. He is clear and concise in his requirements and tells you exactly how to do the work. His class can seem like a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it for a good grade. He has 3 big papers and novels that have to be read. Makes you think critically about the work in order to perform better.
I've taken this prof twice before and loved it, but his online class is horrible. He has assigned twice the workload of his in-person classes (10 books for this class), there is NO interaction with other students, and little from him. His long, typed lectures are hard to get through, and there are few grades given, BEWARE. Impossible workload.
Professor Bonca is a must have for English majors at CSUF. I had him for 2 courses so far and will soon have him for a third. You don't always have to be up to date with the readings because he lectures passionately for almost the entire class period on the material. Class consists of essays and written exams, easy grader, gives great feedback
I took CPLT 312, I was hesitant at first but decided to give it a chance. Highly recommend! Take Professor Bonca. I took him online, we had one paper, and reading homework. The homework is very straight forward, you do require the assigned textbook. Attendance was mandatory.
In this class we had five papers that we needed to write. We only required two books. But I didn't use them, it just to help you with the writing prompts. I liked how he explained the requirements for the essays very well. So nothing to stress about. If you need help improving your writing or if you enjoy writing, take this class!
Both classes were online. Both classes had the same format. Journal questions every week based on the readings. one midterm and final and a small paper. provides the lectures and explains the material well enough to understand the content better and really good at grading and giving feedback
I got a C, he was harsh on grading. He is a great instructor but hard class. Avoid him if you can you will see for yourself!
I really enjoyed Prof. Bonca! The class is basically all lectures and discussions but it's very interesting so you won't be bored.
His lectures were the best. I could genuinely say that I learned in this class like ever before. His only homework was reading. He is the most passionate professor ever and his lectures are real. Be prepared to read a lot, but if you make it to class and take notes then you will also be good.
BY far one of the best professors I've had! He is super passionate and knowledgeable about the material he teaches which is reflected in the way he lectures. Journal writing every class meeting, one paper, midterm, and final. If you read the works then you will have no problem passing.
loved his lectures, but very very hard grader.
While I haven't spoken with Professor Bonca in years, I remember him with great respect. As a tenured community college prof, I Iook back fondly at what I learned from him as I teach my own classes. I recently wrote about the experience of losing a parent to suicide in college. The focus was on how no one knew what to say. He did. Ty, CB.
His lectures are brilliant and engaging. There are journal entries on the readings every class, and they cannot be made up if you're absent. There is a midterm paper, final paper, and final exam. He's a tough grader and the final is lengthy and challenging.
Be prepared to read about 1 book each week. His lectures help a lot. Hes understanding and changes the schedule based on how the class is doing. We had daily journals, a midterm, term paper, and final. If you read, go to class/take notes, you will do good. He cares about his students and readings. Very smart, open minded guy. Loved this class
Super easy to follow along with lectures and provided context for the books, very reading heavy though. Graded on lengthy final and midterm (think ~2000 words), journals (done every day in class, can't be made up if missed), and a term paper (DON'T FORGET TO DO THIS LIKE ME THIS+FINAL SUCKS), doesn't use canvas tho :/ do the reading, you'll be fine
Lecture heavy class. Only communication for out of class is email. The daily journal entries are tough, if missed, you can't make them up. Difficult grader on essay papers. Passionate about what he talks about, but didn't get a single grade in the grade book until three weeks before the class ended (it was the midterm). For an A, just go to class.
An amazing lecturer, I loved showing up to class. A lot of reading but great novels. Around 10 books in total at the pace of one book per week. Fair grader, very challenging class! Prof. Bonca will make you think critically about every novel. The final is harrddddd, so don't forget to read read read!! Only downside is you can't make up journals
He's pretty scattered-brained and is also a very difficult grader--get ready to read and write a ton. The class is basically all lectures that aren't that interesting. I'd try someone else!
Professor NEVER uses Canvas, everything is turned in via printed papers & doesn't input grades throughout the semester. Attendance isn't mandatory but you must show up to participate in edit groups & to submit papers. Only assignments are filling out an online journal throughout the semester & writing 5 tedious papers that you need to peer review.
Prof. Bonca is very passionate about english and writing. He actually cares about his students and wants them to become better writers as well. On top of that he is a great speaker and provides great feedback for every paper. Would take another class from him again if it aligned with my major.
Cool dude I would say. He does get pretty political but he does not care if you write in opposition of his views (he encourages it). He knows his stuff and will inspire you to write. Only complaint I have is the consistency of his classes. Sometimes he would end super early or cancel last minute. To be fair he was pretty sick this semester.
