He's quite a character. Throws out candy to anyone in class who asks a question (can get dangerous, lol). Great guy, knows his stuff, will help you whenever you need it. Tests are moderately difficult but he gives practice exams and/or problems to do to help prepare for exams. I would recommend him.
He was not very helpful. He only had a few 25 minute office hours, otherwise was very hard to ask questions. Tests were difficult but realistic. Had weekly homework (not too bad). Final was very difficult and very UNREALISTIC, 14 pages with lenghty questions! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!
Final exam was very hard, but he had been warning about it for weeks before. HATE comprehensive exams!!! Office hours didn't help at first, but then he changed the times. I just came in whenever and he was usually there and would answer questions. Lotsa practice tests. Homework grade was the only thing that saved me in this class! Hard!
This class is strictly based off of the book. His lectures are not clear and although he makes office hours possible there are so many people that need help, due to the fact that the class is not taught clearly, that is it hard to understand the material. I would not suggest this class unless you have an easy schedule otherwise. Very difficult.
Although I am not getting a good grade in the class, DiCarlo has been nothing but helpful to me. My bad grade is due to bad foundation in chemistry. Professor DiCarlo really tries to be fair and I appreciate it! I would recommend him to others.
I enjoyed his class alot although I never visited office hours. He knows how to teach well...and isn't real hard.
very helpful
it can be confusing but use the book it helps to learn the information
Really nice guy. At office hours he is extremely helpful. Lectures can be a boring and sometimes hard to follow but if you read the book you shouldn't have a problem. All test and quizes are multiple choice and the homework given isn't graded but shows up on the quizes.
He's an alright guy but sometimes he is unclear in his examples and you have to keep asking your questions over and over again. Class is not mandatory but if you don't go you will fail. You MUST read the book too, the questions not so much but READ, just do it.
A very helpful professor. He gives fair exams. Always keeps class quite when he teaches. Definitely a good professor to take.
DiCarlo is a really great prof. You never feel intimidated to ask questions, he is ALWAYS willing to go over the material. He is very available for office hours. I really like that he offers partial credit for everything. We also have optional HW that can get us up to 4% extra-credit. Take him if you can, he's great!
He's pretty clear and generally helpful. He presents the material well and takes it slow enough for most people to understand but quick enough so you aren't completely bored out of your mind
This professor is a great prof for lab! He explains the matieral well and doesn't mind answering your queations. He grade very fairly as well. I have him for lecture too and I would definetly recommend him.
DiCarlo has been one of my better professors so far. Lectures are clear and he makes an effort to present concepts in an easy to understand fashion. Tests are all MC, with partial credit, and are more theoretical than computational. He has a few obnoxious quirks (rigidly follows textbook, acts kind of geeky at times), but was great overall.
Good professor. He follows the book pretty closely. He is very helpful, always willing to answer any questions. Pretty clear in his lectures, Tests and quizzes are pretty fair. Not the easiest, but not the hardest either.
He was extremely helpful. I had to retake this class once as the previous professor (lavis) was horrible. Id highly recomend him for anyone, especially those who struggle with chem.
he was an Ok prof, pretty willing to answer questions and always wanted participation and feedback from students. actually asked us to get on here and rate him so future students can hear about him! kind of geeky, but really nice. READ THE BOOK!
Dr. Dicarlo is a great teacher. His exams are more content based, which is very nice. He cares about students and wants them to do well. I would highly suggest his as a professor.
It was a fun class. He goes over the theory more than the math
He is very humerous in lecture. Could work on being more clear when it comes to complicated material (he's really smart). He is very approachable and doesn't make you feel stupid. His attitude toward the class makes you want to learn more. Great teacher, just READ THE BOOK (it will help you in lecture because he doesn't always go in depth).
His lecture are pretty straightforward and he is always very willing to help during his office hours. Tests are generally multiple choice, and not very hard
shows problems on the overhead but sometimes skips steps because he expects that we know it from a previous class. there are times that I have no idea what's going on in this class..
Nice Guy, tests are straight from his lectures and they are multiple choice which helps. He wants you to do well and will help in any way possible.
He is a nice guy who cares about how well his students understand the information, but often times he is messy with his notes and is unoraganized. Overall he has been a very fair teacher this semester, be ready to use the book a lot if you take him. Good luck
Goes too deep into material and then doesn't test on what he says. Quizzes are tricky but tests are pretty close to the problems in the back of the book. Nerdy guy, but very helpful and willing to sit down with students.
He is a decent professor. If I had to take the class over again I would probably take it with a different professor.
DiCarlo is a great instructor for chemistry! He makes passing a hard class, that you may not like, possible. Even if you don't understand at first he gives every effort to help you understand it. He also gives opportunities for extra credit which can be rare at college level. I definitely recommend him as an instructor.
really hard class, but managable
The stuff that we cover can be really confusing but Dr. Dicarlo does a really great job with spending the time to understand where you're coming from to help to better explain.
He is a really nice guy and really willing to help you out. His office hours are very helpful with homework. Tests are pretty hard, just make sure you know the concepts and you will do fine.
kinda unclear sometimes but tests are fairly easy. Final test sounds hard
Professor DiCarlo mostly knows what he is talking about, but sometimes his lectures can be a little boring. The textbook is used a lot, so bringing it to lecture (and discussion) is a good idea, even though it is 7+ lbs. He is always willing to help and is always trying to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
I have Professor DiCarlo for both lab and lecture. He does a pretty good job explaining things in lecture and if you still don't understand he is very approachable and willing to help. He is also one of the best lab profs I have ever had. Very thorough and actually makes you learn the material, but most people end up with good grades.
DiCarlo is a wonderful professor. He does teach straight from the book but if you know that matierial you are golden. TAKE HIM PLEASE!
Very nice prof. Tends to treat students like they are in 2nd grade. Goes quite fast in lecture, so you may have to ask him to slow down a bit. He will answer questions during lecture if you have them. Sometimes goes over problems in discussion that will be on the next exam, so it's good to show up for discussion. Overall good prof.
Makes things easy to understand
Class is very textbook oriented...hw i out of the book. Quizzes are hard but tests are fair for the most part. I dont know about the final yet. He is a tough but fair professor.
a really nice guy, very helpful. more than willing to answer any question you have. the material can be kinda boring at times but he usually has some application (i.e. an everyday example or visual) that makes it a little more interesting. exams are reasonable. DONT TALK IN CLASS!
Nice guy,not always completely clear on exactly what is going on. Difficult quizzes for discussions, but there to help if you need it. If you are good at chemistry, he's easy but for those of us who don't understand it as well, it's hard to follow where he is going with an idea.
He is a good prof but expects you to remember quite a bit from previous chem classes.
Teaches a lot of theoretical stuff which makes it hard to understand. A lot of outside work in the textbook to do well in the class. Exams are easy all multiple choice, he chooses medium to easy questions, lab is worth 20%:) but i had to teach myself a lot in this class
No homework! The questions form the book are optional. His quizzes come from the book questions, so only do them if you want to study for the quiz.
Dicarlo was an awesoe professor. Would highly recommend
Good professor- always willing to help
Teaches well. Is very willing to go over anything he just said even if it was a 10 minute lecture.
Prof. DiCarlo is a pretty good prof. His quizzes are the worst part of the class since they are tricky. Tests aren't too bad. Going to class and taking good notes are the most important things.
Good Professor....Helps and cares about the students. Exams are pretty easy. Suggestible Prof. for sure
Not a bad professor. I learned a lot, but everything was strictly from the textbook. The quizzes and tests are very straight forward. If you study for a decent amount of time, you will do fine on them.
his teaching style can sometimes be distracting using the powerpoint and the overhead but he is always very helpful in office hours if you choose to go to them.
he's a nice guy who does all he can to help you out. but i mean, it's chem lab, it's just not my thing.
This professor is really halpful and he tries to make the information as clear as possible!
Kind of hard to follow.
great professor; would recommend taking if you can. basically follows right from the book so attendance not mandatory, but i would recommend going. if you can do the assigned prboblems, you will be fine on the quizzes/exams.
Overall a decent professor. Always pauses during lecture to ask if there's any questions over the material that he's covering. At times he can be a little unclear but uses a lot of examples via powerpoint. Do the book problems and you'll be fine on quizzes. Tests aren't that bad. I recommend him.
Lab was good. very easy to ask him questions and him respond in an understanding manner. nice guy. Very easy to talk to
good teacher, understands and can explain content clearly. still working out the kinks in mainting control of the classroom, but it is taught in a lecture hall of around 180 kids.... not a bad choice.
overall he was really good, get him if you can (I've heard horror stories from other classes) Really helpful. He gives partial credit for everything. I put down the wrong answer on an exam "?" but showed my work and he gave me full credit for it! all around nice guy
very good guy and the best part were his tests they are very easy they all were multiple choice and only 20 questions
He does a good job with a general level course that is not very interesting.
Good teacher, tests cover what he teaches. Keep up and you will do fine.
Tests get harder and harder... dont be fooled... takes lots of work urself.. discussion are not to help with material learned during lecuture.. "THATS WHAT OFFICE HRS ARE FOR"
good professor and very helpful. Encouraged to go to office hours.. it will help!
good teacher if you pay attention, if you read the chapters before class than you will be able follow easily even if you didn't understand the chapters. Ask questions outside of class and he will teach you ten times better. I suggest him for sure.
i definately recomment dicarlo, he's great, if you go to class and go to his office hours he is super helpful. I barely passed CHM115 with a different prof and now i'm getting an A in dicarlo's class. : )
He is extremely helpful and is always willing to answer questions. As long as you go to office hours (if you need them), go to lecture and do the h/w, you'll be just fine. He's really a great guy!
Great professor! My previous professor was not helpful at all and was very confusing. With Prof. Dicarlo I got an A on my first exam! That's not because he is easy (you do need to do practice homework problems and attending class is helpful) but he can just teach! Not all chem profs can! Chem is not my subject but I was happy with the class!
He definitely has a passion for Chemistry. I liked the class. The subjects are rather rough, but if you have to take the class, Prof. Dicarlo will suffice. Ask him for help if you're having problems. He's more than willing to assist you.
Dicarlo was a good prof, little homework, short, quizes but make sure you study for the test because the amount of questions is low and room for error is small.
Sometimes things were explained in great detail when they were concepts that were easy to grasp.
He is a great lab instructor. He is very helpful and easy to talk to.
Great class but you do have to do bookwork outside of the class to do well
Dr. DiCarlo is a very good professor. When he lectures, he uses popwerpoint slides with lots of examples, and he puts the slides up on blackboard. If you study a lot for the tests, you should have no problem getting a good grade. The tests are fair, and there aren't surprise questions that he didn't cover in class. I would recommend him!
Had him for lecture and lab. Did a decent job explaining things on the board and was readily available during office hours. He made some things more complex than what they needed to be by discussing stuff that goes beyond what's on the tests during lecture. Homework was optional. Good prof for lab, helpful during lab and with the problems after
Dr. Dicarlo loves taking questions from the class. Lecture can be hard to follow at times because of going back and forth from the overhead to the powerpoint.
Very good teacher; goes out of his way to help students, very nice. If you want someone who actually cares if you learn, take his class.
Dr. DiCarlo is a GREAT professor! His test aren't that hard and he gives partial credit if you show your work. He is all about being fair and he is extremely nice! I definitely recommend him, especially if you don't like chemistry, he makes it easy to understand.
Understandable and clear lectures.
Very clear in lecture, overall good teacher, hard exams
He's a solid teacher and he will help you out if you need it. Tests are all mult choice!
The prof teaches fairly well. He doesn't want to hurt your grade. You just need to take time to really study if you want a good grade.
Dr. Dicarlo is a great professor for Chem 116. He offers numerous examples and is more than willing to answer any questions. Read the chapters, do the practice problems, and STUDY and you should be fine.
Material was a little difficult, but the multiple choice exams made it a little easier. Had a good idea of what was on the exam with the homework problems.
He is great for lab, he explains things well and grades fairly. The lab is pretty laid back and if you do not finish your calculations you can usually turn them in later.
he was really good. always willing to explain things or go back over lecture. gives good homework "?" but they aren't mandatory. if you do the hw you should be fine. I only read the sections of the book i had problems with, but he does base lecture off the book. all around nice guy
He is a great professor! He is really helpful and he makes the material easy to understand. If you have to take Chem 116 I definitely recommend you take it with Dr. Dicarlo!
Dr. DiCarlo is VERY fair...lectures are sometimes boring...but 116 is pretty boring...Dr. DiCarlo's exams are NOT bad at ALL! Definitely read the book and do the homework and it is very realistic to get an A. He offers extra credit online homework, has tricky quizzes, but his exams are very straight forward. I would DEFINITELY recommend him!
He is tuff, his tests are all multiple choice but he likes to take the most common mistakes and put their answers on the test, Also he likes to use alot of exceptions or basic questions that if you read to fast you will get them wrong. Just take your time and really concentrate on what you are doing in his class.
Great teacher. Would recommend to anyone!!!
Very good teacher. Extremely helpful to go to Professors office hours.
DiCarlo is the best. After every concept or anything he teaches he asks "any questions?" for all you shy types. He's VERY fair and understanding, he's not a huge stickler or anything. Understand the concepts, be able to be tested on them. You dont have to know hugely detailed mumbo jumbo, just the good ole chapters of the book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
He makes repeated attempts to make material clear, which is extremely helpful. Friendly and approachable. Class pace is mild and enjoyable for the most part. I have an A-/A in the class right now, and I only study a day or two before each exam. I definitely recommend this professor.
He's a nice teacher who really cares and tries to make sure that you understand the material before he moves on to the next subject. Also he is willing to finish class early if he's done with the material that is to be taught that day.
Good guy. Cares about what hes teaching. Not always best communicator. Highly available when it comes to questions.
To me he was an easy teacher. He tells you the basic principles of Chemistry. He also does not have any surprises for what is going to test you on.
Prof Dicarlo is a good teacher. He moves a little fast some times but is always willing to slow down and explain. He is also a great lab instructor and will give you alot of help.
Professor DiCarlo is a great professor! He is more than willing to help you understand the topics and materials. The exams are difficult with studying but are not extremely difficult. Discussions are interesting and he keeps your interested. Take this professor for Chemistry if you can!
Willing to help. Not too hard of a class if you put your time into it.
So boring! Not too difficult, but wanted to fall asleep about every day in class. I would have rather had a harder prof that could keep attention and explain the material better!
good prof, tests straight forward not hard just do the homework and review for tests and you'll be fine
Very nice guy who knows his stuff! Do the homework, you will last ALOT longer!
DiCarlo was a wonderful lab professor. He would often stay after class to answer any questions students had. He was very concerned with our safety as well.
I really dont like chemistry that much but this professor made it incredibly easy to understand. If you are not a big chem fan, I recommend taking Professor Dicarlo.
He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and I highly recommend taking his CHM 116 course.
good teach
Good teacher. Very helpful. If you study, exams arent bad. A lot easier than I thought it would be!
He is a really good chem proff. Take his class.
DiCarlo is helpful and patient. He wants you to figure out things on your own, so trying to get a straight answer out of him can be frustrating. He's a little awkward in front of class, and DO NOT talk in lecture. He promises to hand out candy for asking questions, but it never happens. Readbook+dohomework+payattentioninclass=YougetanA.
This professor is good
He is very helpful and willing to help you outside of class. His tests are pretty difficult but if you study the concepts you should be fine.
He is a good teacher, willing to go over concepts until you understand them, and he makes the material not that difficult. The tests are a little frustrating b/c it is only about 20 multiple choice, but if you study they can be easy.
The class is very boring and it is very hard to concentrate while he is teaching his teaching style is not the best but he is willing to help outside of class. Overall he's ok. His tests are easy as long as you do the homework.
The concepts are hard but he teach it in a very logical way so I definitely recommend him. He does not give you surprises. If you study, you will do fine.
Really helpful and straightforward. Always willing to answer questions in class or in office hours. Tests are multiple choice, and he offers partial credit. I would take him for chemistry
just study because the tests aren't that hard.
good professor
A really sweet guy, and very smart. He's very eager to help and you can see how much he loves his subject. I don't like the candy thing, though.
Dicarlo is one of the best professors I have had at Grand Valley! He is crystal clear in his lectures and is always, always eager to help. If there is any questions he works with you until you completly understand the topic. His door is always open-It is obvious that he loves what he does and works hard to get you excited about the class!
Awesome prof-I am not the best at chemistry, so I was a little unsure about how well I would do in this class. However, this professor was so helpful with any questions that I had and he was very patient and clear when discussing the material. I ended up doing very well-take this prof he is GREAT!
Legends have been told of a professor who could effectively teach anything to his chemistry students. This is that professor.
This professor is everything you want and more. He goes above and beyond to help students!! I didn't just get by in this class, but I actually learned the concepts and feel more confident going forth in my college career. If you need help, go to office hours. He is outstanding!
Our Chem class was behind and when we went to his lab he would help us through and grade us accordingly.
i had Dr.d for lab and he is one of the best professors i have had at gv. he actually cares about the students
DR. D was sweet. He was really clear on what was happening. Also he was extremely good at answering questions, and he had lots of office hours to help you if you were confused. I had him for lab, however, i heard he was difficult for lecture.
Dr. Dicarlo was awesome. He went above and beyond for his students. he is super easy to contact at almost all times. very fair grader, presents material clearly and repetitively. Most definitely my favorite professor ever.
One of the best profs I've had so far. So long as you attend lecture, take good notes and use your resources it is very difficult to not do well in this class. He goes above and beyond for students and makes sure everyone understands the material. Pretty entertaining too!
Professor DiCarlo is the best chemistry professor I've ever had. He is very willing to help out his students, and you can tell that he genuinely wants his students to do well in the class. He is a very fair grader, and if you go to class, do the homework, and get help outside of lecture if you need it, you'll do well.
This man is truly dedicated to helping students learn, and he works his butt off to help everyone to the best of his ability. He knows what he's talking about, and I would recommend him to anyone, but he still won't be an easy A if your not willing to do your book work.
Professor DiCarlo is the BEST chemistry professor here at GV! He is willing to help you until you understand the material and is available outside of the classroom to help you as well. I am terrible at chemistry but really enjoyed the class thanks to him!
Nice guy, if you go to class and do most of the HW (not mandatory) you will do fine... reasonable tests
Lecture is somewhat interestng, although tends to be monotonous. It doesn't really help you for the tests and quizes however, because the difficulty level of tests tends to be much higher than what he prepares you for. do the book work and go to ms^3!!decent teacher. but watch out for that final. DOESN'T CURVE TESTS
He works hard to help you learn the stuff, but the tests are tough. I finally figured out that the quizzes were direct from the homework half way through the semester. Final sucked.
Not my favorite prof. The class is so easy and the final sucked and I got A's on more than one of his regular exams. He doesnt curve tests and makes you memorize all the formulas, which in my opinion does not show you're learning anything. Take a different teacher. Yeah, he is helpful but he doesnt teach at the same level his tests are given at.
From reading the comments below, one would think Cory is some sort of Chem God, hardly the case. He's a very nice guy, but certainly not the best chem prof I've ever had. Tests are definitely reasonable, but final was b.s. Lectures tend to drag on and I didn't really care for the format of the class as a whole. I'd think twice before taking him.
Nice guy, very smart and knows what he is teaching, but horrible teacher. Agreed that the final was ridiculous and consisted of tricky questions that we barely went over. Don't recommend him.
Final was so hard and unfair. i literally aced the first two exams, and got screwed on the final.
Ok prof, but exams are really hard. Online homework sucks, but there isn't much of it. Hot Bod.
Prof. DiCarlo is great. He is very passionate about his subject and does everything he can to help students. No mandatory homework outside of class. The final was the hardest test I had ever taken but luckily some easily accessible extra credit and decent grades on previous exams kept my grade at a B. DiCarlo is the way to go for CHM 116.
Dicarlo is a great CHM 116 prof. He takes time to go over difficult subjects until you understand. Usually offers a lot of review, which is very helpful. Take him for 116.
He is really helpful and the normal exams are very doable. It was the final exam that was so hard it was unfair. I managed to keep an A all semester and got a D on the final. There's something wrong there. Aside from the final, he was a great CHM 116 teacher. He made it easier than 115.
Easy lab professor. He is very detailed and tells you everything that he expects on the lab reports. Gives you plenty of time to get them done too. He is always willing to help if needed. Complete nerd when it comes to chemistry and safety but he is a great prof.
Professor DiCarlo is a sweetheart and is there for you WHENEVER you need him. He is very willing to help. He will not give you direct answers and he will not just tell you how to do a problem he will make you think about it while he gives you hints and reasons behind the problems which is more useful when it comes to the in class exams.
If you're a chem major you'll appreciate his sense of humor, but it's a hard class. Do the homework.
Very difficult class but is not impossible. DiCarlo can be very helpful if you seek help. He also is sympathetic and tries his best to give you a good grade but you must earn it.
He is a wonderful teacher. I would recommend him for anyone who struggles with chemistry. I wish I would have had him for my lecture! He is very helpful and it is obvious he wants you to do well in the course. Take him for lab or lecture, he is passionate about what he does and will help you pass!
He is a good professor, his class is hard but it's worth it. He is really fun and he can teach you a lot about lab techniques and bring in real world examples. Just be prepared to make the book your friend.
Had him for lab. Awesome prof. Very helpful, and always has time outside of class to help you out.
he was and is a great lab instructor. funny, smart, and very helpful. this was my third lab course taken and let me tell you, you would be very lucky to have Dr. DiCarlo as your instructor.
Had him for lab and he is extremely helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have. A fantastic teacher that I hope to have again in the future.
Quant is a difficult class but Dicarlo is a great professor. Good at teaching both the theory and the math behind the subject; sometimes difficult to understand how they go together. He goes out of his way for his students and has mercy on us when we can't handle the stress. Recommended.
Cool guy. Very helpful and organized.
I absolutely loved Dr. DiCarlo. He was a great lab teacher and was very helpful because some of the directions in the lab book were unclear. Was always happy to help and was readily available outside of class to help with anything! Take him if you can!
I had Cory for the Lab portion of Chem116, and he made the whole process incredibly smooth. He presented the material, and made sure that we understood the theory behind each lab. I would definitely recommend taking his Lab sections.
DiCarlo was a great chem lab prof. He is very picky about sig figs and such (which he should be) but he looks over your work before you leave and tells you what you did wrong so it is not hard to do well in his class. Def recommend him for lab!
Great Professor, explains things so you can understand them. Very helpful, available when you need help. I would recommend him for CHEM 116
He was a good professor, but he words his exams weird and confusing. The final exam was almost impossibly hard and had questions that weren't related to stuff gone over in class or in the book; it was made to be as tricky as possible, resulting in the difference between getting an A and receiving a B+ in his class.
Not the best teacher. I expected him to be good, but he was not challenging and totally boring.
He's a good prof., but I hate his tests. There are only 25 questions so a couple wrong results in a bad grade. He goes fast so speak up if you need clarification or you might fall behind. The book is only necessary for the homework. He's likes visitors during office hours too. Go if need be :)
Cory is a good professor and is really passionate. The course was decently easy, I just didn't like the tests. They were only 25 questions at 100 points, so if you got a couple wrong, it was a nice chunk of your grade gone. Attendance not mandatory, but go if you can. Ask questions if you fall behind - he's always willing to help.
Very good guy. Had him for CHM 116 and I strongly encourage anyone taking 116 to take him. His quiz's were homework questions straight from the book and he gave practice exams that were very helpful for the exams. Homework wasn't mandatory which is always nice. Kind of a nerd but made you laugh sometimes, he was always around to help out a student
Pretty good lecture prof, but exams are long, difficult and tricky. He takes questions from the homework, so doing the homework is recommended. Is a helpful prof more outside of class than in. If you want a challenge, take him. If not avoid him and take another prof.
This course was extremely difficult for me. Do all of the homework and you should be fine on quizzes but exams are ridiculously hard to prepare for especially if you didn't have a very good CHM 115 instructor.
Was really excited to have him, and ended up hating it. Good lecture professor who explains things thoroughly, but exams are tricky and tedious. 25 questions = 13 percent of your grade, so getting an A is really hard. Take him if you want a challenge and are ready to do a lot of memorization of theories.
Very good teacher. Enthusiastic, energetic, and very helpful. Overall class wasn't too difficult, but often did poorly on exams because I couldn't finish them in the 50 min period. Other than that issue I really enjoyed him as a professor.
I am not quite sure why his ratings are so high. He is a great guy so it is hard to dislike him, but his class is awfully hard. His exams are almost impossible to finish, therefore very hard to do well on. Goes much more indepth than other 116 profs. Makes the class much more challenging than needs to be. I would not take him if you don't have to.
Very knowledgable guy yet his tests are super hard. I'm not a chem person and I had a pretty difficult time in his class yet he's willing to help ALWAYS! and his quizzes in discussion are all homework problems.
He's a smart guy, and very helpful when you ask questions. Very energetic. Hardest class I have took in college, Got an 85% in the lab, 100% on the 11 quizzes, but the tests are ridiculous and I averaged about 65% on them. Awesome guy, but by far the hardest class I have ever taken. Unfortunately its a 5 credit class and my GPA suffered!!! :(
He is a very well meaning professor who will go to great lengths to try and help you. However he is not very good at explaining things, his lectures are very disorganized and confusing, and the exams are really hard. I got an A in 115,and even with a tutor I struggled immensely in this course with him instructing it and will be lucky to pass.
He is a nice guy, but its very hard to do well in this class. I failed 4 out of 5 of the exams, and I am usually an A student. Exams are impossibly hard and take more than the 50 minutes.
Yeah, hes nice and will do anything to help you. But he isn't good at explaining things, and his exams are rediculous. Went from 115 were I had 3 class high tests scores to failing two of his tests. After looking at tests statistics, about 7 people get A's and the rest just bomb it
He is a very difficult professor and his exams are very difficult. I studied harder than I ever have before and still did not do well. He tries to explain things, but has a hard time being clear. I would not recommend him as a professor.
Very helpful professor outside of class. He is always willing to spend time helping you. Its really hard to say anything negative because he is such a nice guy, but tests are extremely difficult. This was my lowest grade in 5 years at GVSU, and that is including all my PHY classes!
Professor DiCarlo is a good teacher. He is very willing to meet with students during office hours and emails. He wants students to understand the course. He is very nice and funny. I recommend him for CHM 116. However his tests are very hard and in depth. He focuses a lot on conceptual and theoretical questions. Overall good teacher! Loved him! <3
He is good teacher. He loves what he is doing and wants us to understand. But his tests are super hard. He is willing to meet during office hours all the time. I like him but coming from 115 with a A to struggling to keep any grade above a C in 116 is hard. He likes conceptual and theoretical questions. He is pretty tough.
Professor DiCarlo is a very hard teacher. I would not recommend him for anyone. His tests are impossible. I am a 3.0 student and will be lucky if I come out of this class with a C. I studied, but it seemed like what I studied was never on the exam, and his questions were way harder on the exams then practices exams. If you get him, I wish you luck.
I really learned a lot from this professor. He's friendly and readily available to help his students. The exams were pretty difficult, but not impossible--they made you think beyond the basic concepts. If you're not willing to work hard, then I suggest you find a different professor.
I studied very diligently for this class, and understand every chapter in the book very well. I would even recite the key concepts to him before every exam. His exams just don't do good job evaluating your understanding. His statistics were everything but a bell curve. Also isn't good at explaining things
His quizzes are direct from the homework questions - and we have all the answers ahead of time for the homework. People kept failing the quizzes anyway. No idea why. Exams were hard (AND TOO LONG), but half were homework problems and discussion problems. If you show up to discussion and understand the homework you'll do fine.Constant office hours.
Dr. DiCarlo's a really nice guy, and he knows a lot about Chemistry. You'll learn a lot in this class, but don't be surprised if your grade says otherwise. His final exam was brutal, it took me down from an A in the class to a B. He's very helpful outside of class though. I'd recommend if you want a challenge, otherwise find a different one.
Let me be perfectly clear: I had a 3.6 at HHS and a 3.7 at GRCC, taking AP and Honors courses. But if you want to get an A in this class, you're going to have to work your ass off for it. His tests and final focus on making advanced conclusions through critical thinking. But he's VERY good at explaining things when asked in discussion & office hrs
I did well on Chm 115 and picked this course an an elective (wrong decision) thinking I could also do well, but I was wrong! It's not necessarily a tough course, but he likes conceptual and theoretical stuff that is covered very little in lectures. He's helpful but his exams are ridiculously long and impossible to do in a given 50 minutes!
Such a great professor. The class in general is not fun, but Dicarlo makes it fun. He is a nice guy, very smart, and very apt to help you in any way he absolutely can. If I had any other science classes I had to take that he taught, I would definitely take him. He tailors his teaching style to your needs and is always available to meet. Great prof!
OMG so hot!!! Can't believe he isn't a model or something. Why is it that at 8AM he can look so good? TOtally not fair at all. Sucks as a teacher though...
Really good professor. Cares alot about his students
Great Prof! Always in a happy mood and very encouraging to his students. The course in general is very challenging as it should be. Your grade will definitely reflect on how hard you work for this class.
He was really helpful and answered e-mails back within the hour every time I asked a question. He was extremely understanding when things came up and wants to help make each student successful.
The Professor was good, I thought the way things were set up was good.
The Professor was great, and the way the class was structured was good as well.
Great professor! He was very helpful and wanted everyone to succeed in understanding and learning the material.
Great Prof! if you are not ready to put the work for the class you going to fail. so be ready to do the work. this class reflect on how hard you work for this for your grad. so if you need an A be ready to work for it bc nothing is giving to you for free.
If you are chemistry-inclined, this is the prof. for you--you won't be confused by his convoluted explanations or test questions that are designed to confuse you. He makes simple concepts much more difficult to understand than they need to be. This is not the guy to be teaching general chemistry--he'd be much better in 300- and 400-level classes.
He is AWESOME!! He really cares about each student's success. He offers multiple ways to seek help and does not make you feel stupid when you do not understand something. Chem is a very hard subject for me and I actually did really well in this class. I wish I could take him for every Chem class I need!
He is a great professor! He is willing to help you in many ways and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking a question! His exam questions are tricky and his final is HARD for how much it is worth. Do the work he gives in the practice stuff ( where many test and quiz Q's come from).
Dr. DiCarlo is a great prof. Although his tests and final are hard, they are very doable. I studied on average 2 hours for each of his exams and pulled an A out in the class. Chemistry is a hard subject, but If you pay attention and work on the in class worksheets, practice exams, and homework problems you will be just fine in the class. Take Him.
Great professor, really cared about his students, answered all questions that were asked, and was very helpful in office hours. His exams were a little dificult but its a 5 credit class so you are going to have to work
Easily the best professor I've ever had at GV. His class style was flipped (video lectures and class time use for worksheets). He's extremely understanding and is genuinely interested in your success in the class. Don't take this class with any other professor if you can help it.
Wonderful prof. Extremely kind and friendly, very smart, good sense of humor. Same great attitude every day, very helpful in and out of class. Discussion was very helpful. Enjoyed the flipped class style and got B's on exams without doing book homework. Final exam was very hard though! Make sure you study all along like he says!
Had him 2 years ago, now going into my senior year as a chemistry major, and i can say for certain, he is the worst chemistry professor i have had thus far. he's an intelligent guy, but not a good teacher.
One of the nicest teachers I've ever had. Honestly, this man was positively delightful! Very nice guy, very enthusiastic about Chemistry! He was very open to student suggestions (for better or worse). Helped me through problems I was having and I got through his class with a decent grade. Wish more Professors were like him!
I beg you all, don't take this class. Worst class/ professor I've encountered. Tests and quizzes every single week, HW is nothing like the tests, lectures don't benefit your learning in anyway, replies to emails after 2+ days, half the time doesn't show up to tutoring even if he says yes to meeting. I LIVED on youtube for this course. BEYOND AWFUL
