Great teacher/Learning made fun
rude and not very understanding
He was a hard teacher, but you need that. He motivated us to do well.
Very rude, hard grader. Takes music too seriously!!
I thought he was allright
No Comments
Great teacher!!!!!! I have learned alot about the history of music. This class must be taken seriously, therefore if you read and participate in his class, you will enjoy it.
This teacher is great!!!!! Very informative.
This guy has rock 'n roll on the brain. Needs to get current--Snoop Dog should be covered.
Fun guy.
He's ridiculous and tries to be really cool meanwhile he doesn't prepare you for tests and expects you to memorize the slightest details. Take this class when you transfer to another school.
This is a very interesting clas. As long as you do the required readings, participate and pay attention, you will recieve a good grade. I think the majority of the negative comments written about him are from very young students who expect an easy "A
This guy is one of the biggest jokes I have ever seen. He has absolutely no idea what he is doing, yet he is a department head. He is not respected by any of the students and he is talked about constantly by music majors. He couldnt teach tosavetheworld
This guy is an arrogant creep.
Boyd, in my opinion is not a very good teacher. He teaches by reading from the text and and expects you to recall the most trival points for his tests. He is unclear in his methods, arogant, unhelpful and accuses you of not studying when you geta badgrade
During orientation he was a speaker to the new students, made fun of ppl who drive trucks and do nails. What kind of teacher does that? What if someone in there had a parent who is in that occupation? Very rude and clueless

Yeah, he is arrogant at times, but his class was fun. As long as you read you will do fine, he teaches right from the book. Interesting class.

he is not a good teacher--run run
He is the worst teacher at SCCC. He needs to get an attitude adjustment. If you enjoy feeling like garbage then I would take him. He is also an unfair grader. This man enoys making fun of his students.
wow everone bashin on boyd, i thought he was great. funny black man always had me laughin. just read and ur guaranteed a B. a couplt of tests and an oral speach nothin too hard. i would reccommend him
Worst teacher ever. Was very arrogrant to everyone. Was very unclear. Skipped around in his lectures. He showed videos instead of actually teaching. Never went over the test, just handed out a piece of paper with your grade on it. He was really bad.
I was once a music major so I got through, but he was rude and has no problem picking out people to yell at. Find another teacher.
i loved this professor! he made music much fun! His class actually made me pick up my violin again after 7 years! He can be a little tough,as long as you study and listen during lecture,he really a good guy who really loves his job!!!
Horrible, and very rude! I loved music before I took his class, I left feeling like dirt everyday!
I really wanted this course but not with this guy. He was the rudest professor i've ever had. Learning was not fun in this class.
This guy was the worst professor at SCCC. He was arrogant, rude, mean, and god-forbid anyone know more than he does. It's not right that History of R+R can threaten your gpa. I heard there's another prof that teaches this class - take him, Boyd sucks.
1st off i luv all music, this guy is a real tool, pretends ok, worst teacher ever, he should have stayed with the "disco cop" job rather than being a fake teacher who wants to make it big as a musician/egomaniac but won't because his music/teaching is missing something, heart.
Captain Caveman's main flaw as a teacher is his self-absorbtion. I feel he'd be more fit careerwise as a performer than a teacher. He's not patient with his students, and he's not good at identifying each students indivual needs and abilities. Musically hes a cross between James Brown&Kevin Eubanks.
one word,,,TOOOL
he blurs the line of acceptable class behavior by acting like Mr. Cool, but step one inch over the invisible line and he's a lunatic. He left me in tears!
inappropriate!!!! calls girls baby cakes!!!! that's right, you heard it correctly,
I HATE BOYD!!! He get your attention by embarassing you in front of the class, and making you feel uncomfortable. I left in tears almost everynight!! Do yourself a favor and take a music class with another teacher!!!
Wow, if "dick whistle" was in the dictionary, this ****s photo would be used as the definition. Horrible teacher who constantly reverts back to his past glories as a former Berkley student. His knowledge of contemporary music is laughable and insulting. He once argued that the New Kids on the Block were "Bad, dude--yeah!" Moreover, his whol
Craig Boyd is hard but fair. Because he's hard you will not like him, but the more you hate him the more you'll learn. I have Boyd for Jazz History and Jazz/Rock Guitar Tech. If you do your work you'll do fine. A lot of the negative comments stem from his Jazz Hist. class not being an easy "A."
you will laugh your balls off but this guy is kind of a cs'er if you know what i mean
Hes the best teacher this class is why im still going to school he made me see what the guitar is really about. he is a little wild at times and really funny he takes what you learn in class and shows examples of how its used in songs he wrote. one of the BEST teachers i ever had.
acceptable classroom behavior is different for each student,I was yelled at until I was in tears for things his "favorites" did regularly. his tests ignore the main points in favor of inane details. He is an egomaniac, more interested in being the center of attention than actually teaching. only a sadist would enjoy his "teaching methods".
I came into this class with fifteen years of guitar experience and left feeling defeated.Professor Boyd offers no encouragement,in fact he likes to berate and oppress his students. There is no allowance for diversity, and no focus as to what will be tested. He is more interested in impressing students with what he knows instead of helping them learn.
worst music teacher ever
This guy is a tool. Completely self-absorbed, arrogant, selfish, clueless. Pre-occupied with his own self image. Does not have students best interest at heart. Thinks he is God's gift to SCCC...more like a curse... Take this class if you want to wind up hating music, yourself, and the world.
start the revolution bring him down with your heavy metal. if you want to be creative this class is certainly not for you. everyone has their different perspectives. the best way to learn is one on one with a music yeacher that likes your music and is willing to invest time into you. There are plenty of guys like you out there that will teach you f
He expected people to play like a professional. It's impossible to get an A if you don't play it correct. For a test he STANDS behind you and says "play this" then you're expected to play it. He always left class to go to his office for 20 mins so he was never there to help. If your not a music major,THIS CLASS DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR DEGREE
Boyd honestly sucks, not only at teaching but at playing. There is no emotion in his playing and he sounds like a machine, just one note after another maybe with a rest in between notes. I would love to challenge him to a guitar battle in front of the entire campus. Then I would love to challenge him to teaching a class in front of his superiors.
Boyd likes to play guitar. He's not the best, but not the worst. He also likes to be a teacher, well he's the absolute worst! He tries to intimidate his students, and if the student is having trouble,it's obviously because he/she is lazy and does not do their home work..Right?? Yeah f'in right! Learn to read tab, it's cheaper and you will learn more.
He's a great teacher for guitar. you'll learn a lot from him. He doesnt give stuff away and make it easy. he expects you to work and rightfull so. Always super funny and positive
It's either hit or miss with this guy. First day of fretboard theory, he chewed out some kid for not having a guitar with him, and when the kid said he didn't get a call, the teacher just wrote him off. If you're on his good side, you like him, but it's very easy to fall on his**** list, and when you do, you stay there. There's no give and take.
trust me folks he sucks as a person even outside of class. he is a selfish self-centered cheap SOB!! scc should seriously boot him off campus!!
ridiculous, cannot get anything done with him
Took his online class and i don't like him. He wouldn't accept my late assignment even though i had a very good reason why i handed it late, and he seems like a real self centered person. I suggest you to don't take his class.
Easiest online class ever. Highly suggest taking it if you need a music credit.
Took his online class. Super easy! It is only 7 tests for the entire quarter! Thats it! Answers come straight from the textbook! He helped when you needed it. Nice guy, easy grade!
online class...easy if you read and prepare for the 7 tests. 50 questions..timed, but if you are prepared you will see that the questions come directly from the reading.
I took his online course and it really couldn't be any simpler. Read the textbook and the tests are very simple. The professor was helpful if I had to ask an questions via email.
Wow! I totally screwed myself over. I'm sure his online class is easy but do not take this guy in class! He expects u to be expert musicians. He will sound so cool on the first day until the test come along. He will say he will tell u what's gonna be on the test but he really won't.i don't like complaining about professors but this one I had to.
Easy class...u need the textbook b/c answers come right from the book. He does talk alot about nothing & is very passionate about music. Very easy class, just don't be one of those 13th graders expecting to do nothing.
Best professor in the world... Easy class to attend. U don't even need to show up. He is an asset to SCCC
U can get the textbook & multiple choice/ true/false questions that will be on the test on the highered mcgraw hill website, He covers the first 4 parts & all the chapters w/in the parts. Use this website & u should get an A. the Audio is on this website as well. the textbook is required in class tho, but dont buy the cds!
I suggest taking this class online. Very easy!!!! If you do please do not waste your money buying the text book! you can research any information.
Class is very easy online. Missed ONE test, got A's and B's on remaining tests, got a C+ as a final grade. Didn't think that was fair but what are you going to do.
The guy is a disaster. I had a straight 4.0 before taking his class. People who wanted to be music majors failed. Music appreciation should make you love music not hate it. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Boyd inspires his students. He is patient with all levels of musical skill. Unlike many professors in the university system, he encourages creativity over compliance.
Horrible professor. Very rude and has no problem showing his students that he genuinely doesn't care about them. Decided to change the due date of an exam at the last minute, and refused to allow me to make it up even though the syllabus clearly stated from day 1 when the exams would be given. Additionally, he refused to meet me for office hours.
Literally just has students read the text book aloud in class. No notes. U need the text book. Repeats the same things over and over, uses examples that have no relevance. hard to follow, easily distracted, and unorganized structurally. You would do better just reading a book on jazz than taking this. There were no set dates for exams or reports.
Honestly this class is one of the worst i've ever taken, he expects everyone to already have a strong background in music, even though it's an introduction course. Doesn't review for tests, I once asked him for help on a test subject and he replied "look it up". Very rude and all around awful as a professor, don't take this class.
- He has No teaching methods or style to help students retain information - He gives NO extra credit - he makes the test difficult - He makes the class boring - He makes the whole subject tough to understand - He avoids questions when I raise my hand
Probably the WORST Professor I have ever had. This class is so boring and he does not make it interesting. If you forgot the text book at home don't even bother coming to class because you will be reading from it the entire duration of the class and he will most likely call you out on it. Test are tough and extremely hard to prepare for.
I really don't understand the negative comments, maybe it's much harder in person. Tests are EXTREMELY easy if you study; everything is literally from the textbook. Tests are timed, but there is only one a week, and the average of those test grades is your final grade. I had a 95 average. Put minimal effort in and you will get an A.
The worst professor I've ever had
Boyd may be hard on you, but it is only to inspire you to do better things. Ive learned so much in his fret board harmony class. He taught me a bunch of chords and scales on the guitar that I did not know about prior to taking his class. I don't know why all of you guys are ripping on Boyd I think he's a cool cat!
Guy doesn't teach, he attempts to read the textbook in an effort to teach the class, but has trouble reading it so that doesn't even work. You'll stare at the clock the whole time, and he acts like the world is ending if you have to go to the bathroom. Just a rude guy overall.
One of the worst teachers I've had at Suffolk. Classes are very boring and all he does is read from the textbook. Doesn't really know how to teach and he isn't very nice. He's very passionate about music but he expects everyone else to feel the same way. Take it with someone else if you can
Horrible teacher. Classes are boring and your grade is based off 6 tests which aren't the easiest. I would avoid him.
positives: knows jazz music and you will actually learn something negatives: you cant go to the bathroom, expects you to be a music major, he thinks hes teaching a class at harvard and not a community college, he will call on you, holds class to the very last minute and often lies about letting you leave early, holds class after a test
Do not take this professor, he is so awful at teaching and not a nice guy.
Worst professor I've ever had. Most dreadful class to sit through. All he does is make you read the textbook to yourself. Don't bother going to the bathroom cuz he'll make you feel like you're doing something wrong. Would not recommend taking this class with this lame professor
One piece of advice: TAKE HIS CLASS ONLINE!!!! Literally the easiest online class I have ever taken. Your grade is calculated solely off 7 tests. No papers, discussions, anything. Google the test questions. Don't bother buying the book or CD. If you need to take MUS101 definitely take him but ONLINE.
Good class.
honestly, the hardest class I have ever taken. "lectures" involve him reading out of the textbook and barely explaining anything. his review sheets are very vague and long. if you have questions A about the review sheet, he tells you to look it up in the textbook. very rude, and spends almost every single class talking about phones. not worth it.
I'm not sure why so many people give this guy a bad rep. He's easily one of the best professors I've had at Suffolk. Very easy to talk to, makes the boring class somewhat interesting. He truly cares about you learning the material and passing, so if you don't want to read, try hard, and learn, why are you paying for college? Highly recommend him.
Expects full and complete participation in class using material previously read from the textbook. Strict with phone / bathroom usage. Has deep understanding of the material and a real passion for it. Lively and interesting lectures, but he likes to call on students. Tests heavily based on textbook. Pay attention in class for tips on test material.
If you need a music/art credit, do yourself a favor and take his MUS101 class online. Don't waste your money on the book/CD like I did, you won't need it. Like the other person said down below, grade is based only on 7 multiple choice tests. One test each week.
If you need to take music/art like I did, take this class but ONLINE. It is super easy, it's just 7 online tests and all the answers are on Google. You are only graded on the tests nothing else! No other work! Don't even buy the textbook or the CD! Seriously take this but ONLINE. Hands down easiest class I've ever taken. Thank god for this class!
Don't take this Professor! You have 5 tests that make up your grade. He hands out a review sheet before each test but you have to fill it out yourself which takes time and it is very vague. He is also very weird and freaks out if you have food or a drink in class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS HE IS CRAZY AND THE WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD HE FREAKS OUT ABOUT PHONES FOOD OR DRINKS DO NOT TORTURE YOURSELF BY TAKING THIS
Awful teacher and doesn't know how to teach or how to act as normal human being. Almost all students fail his tests because he does not cover the criteria well and has little to no teaching technique. Also shows his terrible jazz music that was from 50 years ago instead of teaching. Makes up his own language and calls his students "catz".
Truly one of the hidden gems in the school. He probably one of the best teachers Ive ever had. He really funny, always cracking a good joke. Hes also very friendly, always giving you a smile when you see him. If you take notes in class and study the book youll pass. Also bring 5 dollars
okay so I took this professor for an online class and it was probably one of the best choices ever made. All you have to do is take the tests before the deadline and you can just google the answers without purchasing the textbook!! Do it if you need an easy A and a gpa booster!
Professor Boyd was the best professor I had at Suffolk so far. He is extremely nice and is passionate about what he teaches. He jokes around and includes every student. Participation and attendance is the key to passing his class. Great teacher and a great person.
Make sure you take notes from the textbook, or at least read the chapter the tests will be on. There was no work for me other than the tests he gave, so its important to do well on them. He did not give the tests very often, but be aware the first test gives you alot more time than the ones after that. All in all a good class though.
this man is awful!!! yelled at me the first day of class for having my phone faced down on my desk. doesnt let you have any kind of food or drink in the classroom. not a nice man, do yourself a favor and dont take him or at least take it online so you dont have to sit in the class for an hour with this man
I was taking the Online class. It consist of 6 Part and each have 1 Quiz every 2 weeks 30Questions in 75 Minutes also 1 Test every 2 weeks which consists of 75Questions in 75minute There are no Discussion and Each Module there are various listening part, It seems like he see his previous online course were so easy so he change it make it more Chall
very nice & knows a lot about music and its history! Shows lots of music videos and relies heavily on the textbook. Tests will be hard if you do NOT study.(Also gives review sheets) Participation is a key factor and will help boost your grade at the end of the semester. Made the class fun & interesting more often than not
DO NOT take this professors class. He is absolutely out of his mind. Wont let you go to the bathroom, drink or eat in the class. Will take points off your final grade for having your phone ON YOUR DESK. He is disrespectful to students but expects you to respect him. Everyone fails all of his tests because he has no sense of teaching skill.
Deducts points if you use restroom (so he violates college policy...) or have a snack. Most review definitions for tests is not in the text and are hard to find and not in the same wording as the test questions. You CAN'T WITHDRAW after the midpoint, instead he'll tell you a boat story even if you are not a disrespectful student. You will fail.
Prof Boyd shows that he knows and loves music very well. However, he expects that same out of students that are just trying to fulfill a mandatory credit. While he may be a great musician, he is nowhere close to a great teacher. He is disrespectful and talks down to all of his students. Doesn't help struggling students, prohibits bathroom use.
Hes definitely an acquired taste. Cant use the bathroom during his class bc it distracts him. He will call you out in front of everyone of you do not bring your textbook cant have snacks either. He tells you the key to passing the tests is reading around the terms he gives to review (his tests are all from Quizlet word for word).
TOOK THIS CLASS ONLINE AND PASSED WITH AN A.. IF YOU TAKE THIS COURSE TAKE IT ONLINE, YOU HAVE 1 TEST AND 1 QUIZ EVERY WEEK, AND SOME HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS. JUST READ AND YOU WILL PASS !!!
This professor is very funny if you want a good laugh sometimes. He reads out of the textbook EVERY SINGLE CLASS so it definitely is a MUST to get the book. He tells personal stories about him attending Suffolk and his music career. Make sure you read ahead of time so you can answer questions quickly because he always tries to dismiss class early!
Easiest class to take online, all the answers are on quizlets and the homeworks you can open multiple tabs and listen all at once. Dont get the textbook. Homework and tests due every 2 mondays.
He was not a good teacher. All he does is read the textbook out loud each class and then gives a study sheet at the end of each chapter. He swears by this sheet but it doesnt give half the info thats on the test. look at the quizlets by Nellie621, Final Chapters, and most of the test info is on here. He is an awful teacher and I dreaded his class.
The easiest online class I've ever taken, the only assignments are homework and tests which are all available on quizlets online. Do not even bother getting the textbook.
Do yourself a favor, never take this class, or take this class but not with this guy. He is awful and so beyond rude. Not helpful what so over. SOOO many assignments. Quizzes you have a hour to do 30 questions which is reasonable. But tests you have 75 minutes to complete 75 questions. Not enough time. Boring class, and super tough. Don't take him.
Super easy class for online mus101. Definitely little time consuming but easy to get everything done in one day. The work is all spread out so it helps with time
Professor Boyd is a bit stern, but the class is pretty straightforward and easy. Get the homework, quizzes, and exams done on time, and you will get an A if you get good grades on all the assignments
Prof. Boyd is a cool dude he really wants you to show up to class and apply yourself. He's old fashion and is gonna make you work for a good grade. With that being said the review sheets he gives out are practically useless. I didn't study too heavily, but half of the information in the book doesn't even make it to the test
Study guide not true to test, hard tests. Does not help you when struggling with class. Tells you to "try harder."
Professor Boyd is excellent, I just started taking history of jazz and it's such an interesting class. I've already learned so many great things about it that I didn't know before. I have him on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm thankful I took this class. If you do the right thing, you'll be just fine. It's probably my favorite class so far this year.
I had this professor for Piano I. He is very funny, makes learning fun, and wants all of his students to succeed. If you ask for help, he will give it to you. He wants to see that you are really trying, just put the work in and you will pass. Overall, I recommend taking his class.
Super easy online class, says in his syllabus that it will take about an hour of work per unit, and each unit is 2 weeks long. Work all comes out of the online text book, and one test and quiz per unit. No writing or projects, all multiple choice. No extra credit. Easiest class I've taken.
This was an online class, the course outline was very unclear and almost impossible to understand. Assignments were long (took me about 6 hrs) and if you missed one you were unable to take the test or quiz. Offered no office hours, barely answers emails. Do NOT take this class unless you have no other choice.
This guy wants to create a genuine experience, hes funny and super giving grade wise if you just read from the text book, my class had a hard time with him and I felt bad because he literally would ask questions that are sometimes in the first paragraph of the chapter and almost no one could answer, theatrical musical rocker coach carter type
I am by no means a musician, but he made me one, just listen to his words trust the process, give yourself up to your education and you going to be alright, believe me, well worth it, learned more than just music, btw its only been a month since i finished the class and I can play level 3 nyssma songs LETS GO!
Professor Boyd was a mixed bag for me. He can be pretty funny and he's very passionate about what he's talking about. The problem was that when he spoke it sounded muttered and confused. The tests can be pretty unforgiving and he can get pretty strict about certain things. You also need the textbook
I took this class online. The class its self is super easy. All answers are online BUT his syllabus is every unclear and is basically useless for help. Any email Ive sent him he just copy and pasted what the syllabus said. Hes kinda a jerk but easy A
do NOT take his class in person. I took it my last semester of Suffolk and got an A- ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS ONLINE! He wasn't clear about what he wanted handed in so I failed the first week of assignments & he was really mean over email, but once I figured it out the class was a piece of cake. a TON of work, but easy enough. QUIZLET FOR HW & TESTS!!!
really confusing asked for clarification and he just says to read the syllabus. Don't take unless your a music major especially the online class.
Easy A requires a code which was expensive yes but everything you "read" you are asked questions for which can be found online hence why I got an A absolutely everything is online so take it
He loves music and teaching. If you really want to learn, He will do whatever it takes to get you there. Dont ask him for an A
I recommend taking Professor Boyd's class ONLINE. Make sure you read his instructions about completing the assignments because if you don't listen to the songs attached, you get 0's on them and you can't go back. I asked him if he could reopen them for me and he said no and to read instructions more clearly next time. Easy A if you take online.
Craig Boyd is full of so much energy. Took Jazz Ensemble with him for a couple years. Some of the best fun I have had and what an awesome human being. None other like him, was so glad I got to study with him. Thank you disco cop, thank you Captain!
