unclear with essay instructions!!!!!!
humorous, but really hard to understand- hard to get a good mark, lots of essays
No Comments
more interested in his political career than teaching, unclear essay instructions.
Unclear essay instructions! For the sake of your GPA, avoid him! Grossman would be a much better choice for anyone really interested in this course and in history in general.
great for a morning class, wakes you up. relaxing course format but hard for grades
lectures get boring, otherwise great class! I liked it, and thought the essays were fine too ;)
Very knowledgable and funny. Misses a lot of classes, you decide if that's good or bad!
A very funny and nice teacher. Makes funny jokes to make history more fun, but talks way too fast. His markings on essays are brutal, other than that, he's fair and helpful.
very interesting and funny prof, but not easy to get an A. The whole course consisted of 2 short essays, a term paper, and the final (Which was an essay). If you suck at writing essays, don't take him. But overall, he's a brilliant teacher-> very witty
talks too fast
Very intelligent commentary. Interesting perspectives. Classes are not boring he mixes humor with the history lesson which keeps us entertained. However, his class isn't for the dim witted, attention span is required!
Draws from a wide base of knowledge and experience. Excellent sense of humor and lively lectures. Provides technical accuracy and a passion for instruction. A very enjoyable prof.
He is not helpful at all. Essay structure is difficult to understand. Almost all marks were based on essays, except for midterm. He is neither funny nor witty. Outspoken people who do not actually contribute to discussions are embraced by Keating.
Like a shot of coffe in the morning. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He's a Marxist need I say more.
Not a fun class, he missed alot of classes over the term, hard marker and his coverage of the course timeline was very vague no great details over the first world war. He has seminars, 2 essays, a term paper and a final.
He is fine...He cancles alot of classes but sometimes he talks so fast...he has the huomer sence..
misses a lot of classes, talks too fast, interesting lectures,
Awesome teacher. Any one who whines about Keating or writing essays shouldn't be in college, because conditions rarely get as good as this!!!!!!!! Aced it no problem.
Man what a cool guy! Hilarious, high energy lectures! I'd be happy with 5 lectures a week from this guy! Mark for whole course was 20% paricipation, 20% Midterm, 30% Final, 30% term paper! What could be easier? Don't leave Lang. without a Keating clas
Really cool, keeps you interested with many prespectives on a variety of topics. Mixes humor with his high energy classes so it's never boring. Testing and marking pretty fair comparatively.
definately one of the best teachers in the school. Very smart, excellent lectures though he does miss a lot of classes. You only have to go 1st 2 days of each week. Hard but fair marker, need to know how to write though you shouldnt be in here if you dont
sorta funny, pronounces roosevelt wrong, and says the word facilitates a lot. im am not a history person at all, and never studied, but came out with a C+. so if you like hist, you should do well with him.
intelligent and humorous
History class was tough. Very picky on assignments. Hard maker. Better be good in English!
His teaching style helps you learn, if that's what you mean by easy. Very knowledgeable and fun!
His head-twitch/hair-toss thing is distracting. He's pretentious and more concerned with municipal politics than he is making my tuition worth while. A bum.
great prof. His lects are easy to follow and extremly interesting. His course is well structured with positive learning outcomes. Most interesting and best class I've taken at Langara so far
Good points- incredilby intelligent- very interesting- great notes- exciting prof. Negitive points- online- he's absent- hard to get a hold of- not very helpful. But in history, you don't need a lot of guidance- and he's notes are so good anyways.
Great professor, great sense of humour, very intelligent and very helpful. Exams are usually easy to write as he gives the questions in advance. Go to class - there's a ton of notes.
I didnt like his way of teaching. I didnt learn as much as I expected to. He is all over the map and repeats himself. He talks too fast and doesnt give any notes. Very hard marker. His term paper is one page with specific instruction.
such a funny guy! if you hand in ur essays late he wont deduct marks! what more do you want ppl!! i handed my 2 essays in the last day and i got a B overall
great lecturer, great historian, funny guy. Papers are easy and specific.
Forget it.
He has to be the laziest prof I have seen. Only 2 lectures (should be 4) every week, and the discussion group is a waste of time. He has missed three classes without notice, and for a stretch of 2 weeks he only attended one lecture. He teaches this class like an online course.
dont take his class!!!
Very interesting lectures. Midterm was brutal. First half was an objective part- some of the stuff he had never covered. Did not give a final- only an essay. I screwed mine up but it was my own fault. I would take him again.
Misses a class about once a week, and only lectures for two days at that. The other two days consisted of discussion groups and film viewing. I like him as a person, but I think he's a terrible professor. He has too many outside commitments to be able to devote enough time to his students.
Easy class. Midterm is straight from the text. All you have to do is skim through looking for important dates. Fair marking on the essays. Interesting lectures.
I thought he was great: interesting lectures, very engaging. He does miss alot of class, but the material is covered thoroughly. There is a lot of reading but you don't need to know all of it:the key info he expects you to know is reiterated in lecture. There was no late penalty-if you're organized, the flexibility is great, if not...
Doing this class online. DON'T TAKE IT WITH KEATING. He's off enjoying vacation and never responds and things are a mess. He expects a lot from you and marks hard yet is never around. Nice gig if you can get it. I want a refund.
Man this dudes too busy to be teaching. He should give something up, eider city council, teaching or research. better to do few things better than many things mediocre me thinks.
If you do well organizing your study independently and like flexibility, Craig's classes (sporadic scheduling, fascinating lectures) are for you. His tests are crazy-hard, but he is very knowledgeable and makes history entertaining. Takes a lot of studying but you'll feel like you have a much deeper understanding of the subject!
Craig is great! Wildly entertaining and can really make you laugh and want to be there in a AM class. No marks deducted for late papers. Take LOTS of notes! Write down almost everything he says and pay attention. He answers any questions and isnt intimidating. You'll love the hair toss and quick remarks when he really gets into a lecture.
Awesome teacher, great sense of humour, makes you want to show up. No marks deducted for alte papers.
This class is great. Very relaxed environment just like university/college should be (some classes are like high school!). Lessons are well planned and have a general format. Good question and answer period. Made me much more interested in history! Very witty and funny. Very good first year class.
Funny, interesting, makes you want to come to class. He explains things clearly, but very fast. Taking lots of notes will help, but not much, since his tests are mostly dead memorizing maps and relations. It's very hard to achieve an A, lots of essaies, and they are hard to write and research on, marks are generally low, but C+ is mostly guranteed.
Great prof. Lectures are interesting and he's got a lot of energy and enthusiasm.. I didn't even want to take this class and only did to fill up my schedule and he's by far the best prof I've got this semester.
he is by far my favourite prof. he's really nice and i love his teaching methods.
talks a bit fast
Fantastic teacher. Lots of work but worth it, you come out feeling like you learned a lot.
Very very hard marker. But he is such a good teacher..
EXCELLENT TEACHER. so passionate about the material and his lectures are lively whatwith his silly little jokes thrown in here and there. hard marker yes, but do the work and exhibit some interest and you'll be fine. 80% essays; a forewarning!
this guy is an amazing teacher. very helpful, very clear in his lectures and what he expects of you. this course was a lot of work but totally worth it! take him, it's a privilege
hard marker. speaks a bit fast at times. very charismatic and enthusiastic unclear at times but 90% is. overall ok teacher, would take classes with him again but not on this subject.
Conan O'brien twin. very funny very smart, alot of witty remarks, if your interested in History then this class will never be boring. Great sense of humor and very nice !
Really funny and enthusiastic, he also makes an effort to actually know his students. Talks really quickly so it can be hard to keep up at times. It's best if you have prior knowledge about the subject, but it's not mandatory to do well in his class.
spoke very fast, and did not write much down on board or use power point.Had a bad habit of going back and forth between times, spent alot of time on the 50's before we got to 60's.was fairly helpful would give information and advice when asked. showed movie's every second class which made it interesting.late assignments no problem but hard marker
Excellent prof. Doesn't write much down during his lectures. Very entertaining, and I found he was an easy marker. Exams were quite easy, and pretty much tells you what's on the final. Very forgiving on late assignments. Taking him next semester forsure.
Excellent teacher. He gives away marks pretty easy if you put effort in assignments and tests. One of the best teacher I've ever had. And I think he's humorous and cute. :)
Never taken history before (in college level) and I thought it would be so boring but this guy made it so interesting. Very funny, extremely nice, great teacher. He explains everything very well and is very knowledgeable. If you plan on taking history, take it with him. Two thumbs up!
Best history prof I have ever had. The whole class seemed to enjoy his lectures. He really wants you to learn about the subject and is very passionate about history. Very funny as well. His tests were very reasonable and we were told exactly what to expect. Great Teacher. THANK YOU!
His online class was terrible. His written lectures are wordy, pretentious & so advanced they are difficult to follow. Did not respond to most of my emails when I asked questions. I am an A English student & he gave me a C+ on the term paper w/ very little feedback & of course I didn't hear back when I emailed him about it. I do not recommend him.
I like Dr. Craig Keating and while he is prominent and very knowledgeable Professor, like Admirable Stansfield Turner's imprudent devotion to (SIGNIT), thats a form of intelligence gathering based on gadgetry, rather than (Humint), a form of intelligence gathering based on intel from men in the field, Keatings online methods are full of glitches.
Quiz's and discussions are very time consuming and lengthy.
The lectures are very hard to follow because of his advanced language and literary speak. He doesn't give due dates, which is awesome, but I ended up procrastinating until the last week of the term. He gives little work, but assigns A LOT of reading, and the book that we had was very difficult to understand. He is very passionate about history.
Online class is terrible. Readings and quizzes every week and 1 term paper. He is an extremely hard marker. Textbooks are quite hard to understand, this was my first history class since high school (8 years) which was french immersion. My friend took his class last semester and felt the exact same way, no feedback or guidelines.
Really great lectures, but never seemed to care about the class. Lots of absences on his part, never prepared, never responded to emails. It seemed that his political career was more important to him than being a professor.
I took his online course. He is very unclear abut his guidelines and marks extremely difficult considering he offers little instruction. I was very unpleased with him as a teacher and will make sure to never take a class instructed by him again.
I attended classes, completed both essay assignments, and took the final exam but was failed. I don't understand what happened! Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. I had multiple people read my essays after submission and not one person said I deserved an F. I'll never take his class again.
Take this class if you are very articulate and english is your strength not because you like the topic! Hard marker. Not much feed back on how to improve your journals. Not clear what his expectations are. My GPA took a hit from this class. But he is very entertaining! The material is fascinating and I learned a lot!
He is pretty into what he teaches, but all of his notes are just spontaneous ideas he writes on the board - you really need to be able to listen and write to know what is going on. I personally found it hard to follow, and the class would be much better if he had organized notes on Power Point. Doesn't update marks so you have to guess your grade.
Would not even consider taking a class with him again. Topics are vague and he doesn't tell you how to improve. Lectures are messy at best and it is hard to follow since he just talks and talks and doesn't offer many notes. Weekly assignments. Final was 2 term papers, selected from 8 vague topics. Final tmr and he hasnt told us our grades.
Attended every class, read textbook plus other assigned readings, and did all assignments. Cannot say I've learned a thing from this class. Do not take.
Craig was great... lectures entertaining, assignments were fairly straightforward, and he was very approachable. Class was cancelled a lot, which was frustrating, and there was a lot of reading. But great opportunities for participation and I think Craig appreciates it when students are engaged. More interesting course than I expected.
Doesn't give late penalties, extremely helpful when asked for help. He even emailed me saying he would give me extra time after his "cut off date" so I could finish an assignment. Really passionate about what he teaches.
do not take his online course
he doesn't seem to understand how the program works because every week we get an email from him saying he's experiencing "difficulties". Lectures aren't posted on time, tests are delayed, and he makes you colour-code your essay which is ridiculous for a college course. i don't recommend taking this class online, at least not with him.
Craig is genuinely interested in everything he teaches. Lectures are entertaining as well as informative and I found it easy to follow and take notes at the same time. Grades were easily achievable if you put a little effort into it. Emailed him for help on my final essay and he sent me links to resources specific to my topic!
Professor Keating was good, maybe not great. I took the online class, so I can't comment on lectures. There was a lot of reading, although I think that is to be expected in a History class. I felt his level of attentiveness to the class was only a medium, but he seemed to be a caring teacher nonetheless.
Great prof. Love his lectures.
Craig does not appear to like marking, and has the exact same "email" and "computer system" problems that another reviewer mentioned. Quite possibly the worst prof I've ever had both online, and in-person. You will never know how you are doing in this course until you are done.
Craig is an excellent professor, I took the condensed 6-week version of this class & it was fine. Reading the textbook is very important & attending class is not mandatory. Paying attention during the lectures & not going on your phone is also important as he marks participation. You can ask questions at any point during the lecture! he's great
Online class: don't take it. I've heard Craig is a great prof, but it's hard to see that in his online class. He seems to have frequent issues with the online D2L tools and e-mail. He is often behind on uploading lectures and course materials, as well as marking. Tons of reading, especially since he only uploads 2 hours of lectures for the term.
Came to half of the classes and ended up with sold marks on the quizzes, paper, exam and "participation". I didn't even buy the textbook for this course. If you have a general understand of the history of the Middle East between the late 1700's and the present day, you'll do fine.
Amazing lecturer and super easy marker. The course is entirely listening to his lecture, taking notes on a laptop is highly recommended because everything he says should be transcribed, there is zero use of powerpoint notes. Everything is Verbal. 30% of the grade was open book quiz's two 1 page long papers 40%, showing up is 10%, final 20%. EASY!!!
Don't take his online class. Content was posted irregularly, frequent problems w/ D2L links etc, hit or miss with email responses. Course content was v interesting, but lectures were poorly edited w/little text & no subs. Biggest problem: no feedback esp on discussion comments until midterms so you can't gauge what to post about. This was hell.
He is really tough grader. I wont recommend him at all!
Professor Craig is hilarious and you can tell that he really enjoys his work, I am taking this class in summer school, so I have to take it 3 hours per time, it's really hard to catch with his lecture since I am an international student. Just keep in mind that try to take as much notes as possible in class, and DO UR WORK!! And you will be ok.
He is a great teacher We always use to enjoy his lecture he use to make fun of things and also he is very lenient at grades definitely recommend everyone to join his class
when I started his half semester class could not get anything but than give assignmnet and got good marks. Even the marks i got on final were surprising for me. I got b+. But the matter he teaches is very hard to understand but do not worry at end you can score unexpected good marks.
He is a tough grader. Not ready to explain even a few questions during office hours. He has an attitude problem. you need to study very hard to get good marks. I Never suggest him, go for the option.
amazing instructor
I took his online history course, and it was a fairly good experience overall. I'm not really a fan of history, as I only took the course as an elective, so the material was kind of boring and dry to me. The course material is fairly easy, and he lays out all of the content that will be on the exams. It's an easy class if you put in the effort.
Outlines everything on the test but tough grader so it evens out would never take his class again
He is very calm ,polite and experienced professor. He respects everyone. I would suggest students who want to boost GPA must take course with craig.
Took his half sem. History of the Middle East class and it was AMAZING. He's a great lecturer and pretty funny as well making it less hard to sit through 3-hour lectures. He's a hard marker but I would say he's fair so I really had no issues with that.
Best instructor
I really enjoyed history 1130 with Keating! I found his grading to be extremely fair and he gave great feedback. His lectures are long but it's a content heavy course and I found them to still be interesting. The textbook is dense and a little boring though. I'd take another class with him for sure
Though I appreciate the lectures were mostly new recordings, there were two weeks of no lecture because of tech issues. The semester ended with a thud. No mid-term though. The final is one essay based on a dense tie-up question. If you hate essays and writing, avoid. The discussion element seemed DOA for my class. Still, an interesting class.
I personally hate the class. Do not take him if you can. His final is easy but the other assignments he expected to you really well. The toughest grader that I have met in Langara. I got good in my final but all the other assignments lowered my score.
Took his class for spring semester 2021 online, the lectures are long but are very high-detailed with lots of interesting information. Craig Keating knows his material well and is very passionate about teaching American History and how things got there in the first place. Only downside is that he seems to have high expectations on assessments.
Run, don't take his class. The class was terrible. There's no PowerPoint or notes, and he'd ask you to read 30 pages with papers in a week. No clear instructions nor guidelines for the marking and final. I regret taking this class and I would never consider taking his class again.
He is an exceptional, caring, and knowledgeable teacher. His lectures enriched my understanding of exploring modern Middle Eastern history. While his teaching shines, the challenging course led to a suboptimal grade due to demanding research papers and essays, coupled with high grading standards. Factor in your GPA and skills before enrolling.
Good times.
As a professor, Craig is the most hilarious person you will meet. He is always cracking jokes but doesn't tolerate distractions (not that he is rude to them, politely asks to stop). He's like a friend of yours who knows a lot too much about history. This course was very heavy (at least for me). I am really glad he graded me well enough to get a B.
I love Craig. He's what every online instructor should aspire to be. Neat, organized course structure. Very well produced video lectures and great feedback on written assignments. I did poorly because I misunderstood an essay assignment, but he was so worth it. He redeemed my semester of crappy profs. I am waiting to take him again next sem.
Prof. Keating is a knowledgeable but tough grader. Lectures can be engaging, but the course is quite challenging. Stay on top of the readings, use unstuck ai for study prep, and you may land a solid grade despite the high standards.
Very bad professor and partial with Indian students. He always judge make assumptions never pay attention to the work did either in assignments or on exam. Bad grader. Worse lectures.
He was meh. I don't think he marks fairly, but that's my opinion. I probably wouldn't take his class again. He can be aggressive.
