Great professor. Makes the subject exciting and interesting.
Kinda dorky, but a great instructor.
Very nice, helpful guy. Looks like the dad on Dennis the Menace.

Love him. He is so helpful and understanding. He makes Geography fun!!!!
This guy is nice, and he's probably pretty easy in other class, but this class, Physical Geog. is very hard, and his tests were really, really hard.
straight forward, interesting class, not too hard...he likes teaching too
I highly recomend his classes. He SUPER nice, friendly, and helpful. He's very down to earth, an effective teacher, and he's not bad to look at either.
Dr. Laing is a great guy. He is very understanding if you have conditions that prevent you from attending class. He tries his hardest to do anything he can to make sure you understand the material. Tests are hard, but if you listen in class and put some effort into studying you will be fine.
Great teacher. His tests come straight from the lecture. He let the class know what the essay questions were and was good at keeping the class informed with their grades.
This professor was very willing to help any student and his class was very easy. His lectures are directly from the book, so you can't get lost. His online journal is easy. Take him if you can.
His is a really good teacher. Coming in as a slacking freshmen I did not do well in his class. His lectures can be very boring (which is part of the reason I did so back, I could not sit through them). He gives out review sheets and and you have very few class assignments. His test a multiple choice with a essay question. He is great. D
HOT. Makes learning SUPER fun.
This class was a complete waste of my time. He pays way too much attention to details and his class is so boring! If you're just taking it for gen. ed. don't!!!
He is very willing to help in any circumstance. His class can make you sleepy at times, but I would take it again. Really easy if you do the work, and oh yeah- he doesn't take roll.
Laing is a good cultural geographer and a good teacher. He puts alot of effort into the class.
His class is hard unless you take notes. You have to either take notes or read the book. If not, you might fail. Otherwise, you'll be ok. He tends to be a long-winded teacher.
I HATED this class! It isn't REALLY hard but I wasn't happy with my grade. He's kind of an **** and is SO BORING. Sitting through his class is like a slow death. I have never EVER been so bored. He refuses to talk about things that might be interesting but can talk all day about vegetation. Take the class only if you have masochistic tendencies.
I took Dr. Laing for two geo. classes last semester and passed both, one A and one B. He does everything he can to make his class fun and interesting..... take notes, read notes, pass tests. Be sure to attend class, and do all the extra assignments and you will have no problems. If you are afraid to work for a good grade then go to Chatt. State!
Oh my gosh, it's all I can do to go to class. It's soooooo boring. It's obvious he puts a lot of effort in his lectures, but it would be nice if he'd do something different sometimes. The subject matter is interesting, it's just the presentation that will drive one to insane levels of boredom. Otherwise a likeable fella.
He is the best teacher and Dad.
I loved this class, it was interesting and if you go and take notes, the tests are pretty easy. He gives you the essay questions and tells you what to study. It's pretty much just lectures everyday. If you go to class, you'll understand the stuff and it shouldnt be too hard to get a good grade.
Take him for a class he specializes in like GEOG of the Southeast. Not a good physical geography professor, but it isn't his forte either. Fun slide shows of family vacations!
You're going to want to fall asleep some days but overall its an interesting course to take.
he's a really good teacher. take notes. he never takes attendance, what does he care he's already gotten his degree, but go to class you just might miss something. the test are fair and somewhat depend on the notes you take in class. i'd take him for urban geography, but i don't need that class for my degree
Nice guy, easy class. Just go to class, take good notes, work the study guide he gives you for every test, which tells you exactly what will be on the test, and you will do good. Thats what I did and got an A!
This class was super easy. Just show up and take notes and you've got it made. Also, on his slideshow presentations he has some really neat pictures that he has taken himself. He also has some good stories.
Good teacher. The class itself is pretty easy. You can miss a few classes and still do good as long as you read the study guide and prepare the essay he gives ahead of time.
I thought the subject matter was interesting and his powerpoint presentations made the material very understandable. He gives you the essay questions before the test and each topic in the study guide pertains to a multiple choice question. Reading the book is helpful, but class notes and attendance are probably more important.
Very fun. Has a cheesy sense of humor, but is very aware of it. He is a nice man and knows his subject well. Very energetic.
If you have no interest in geography then this class is not for you. It is very boring and I have fallen asleep a number of times. The tests are multiple choice but you need to take notes because whats on the study guide isn't always whats in the book. Then he makes you write an essay at the end of the tests. Very boring.
Pretty easy class. Gives good study guide before test and the essay that will be on the test. Gives two assignments that are very easy, gives you web sites and you find answers. Easy A. Not too boring
Dr. Laing is an effective teacher who knows his material and presents it well. He uses PowerPoint which helps the students with notes. He is perhaps the most organized professor I have ever had. He was always prepared for class and always came in the room with a smile.
Great teacher, but class can be boring most of the time.
Craig is a cool teacher. He tended to stray off topic a lot but most of the time the lecture warranted it. Funny too! It wasn't easy but being that it is a 300 level class no one should expect it to be.
Take quick notes because he talks incredibly fast and you need the notes for the test. The questions on the test are directly from the notes. Awesome teacher. Tests are easy. I recommend him.
I did learn a little in his class, but had to fight to stay awake most days. He is passionate about the material in an informative/descriptive way. I was dissapointed at lack of applicable value.
If you want to be tested on things like barbecue sauce ingredients (not kidding) for test questions that actually count, you'd love this class. If you like the idea of him changing harder bonus test questions to regular questions that count after the test starts, you'll love this class. If you're a sane person, you'll hate it.
Laing is an awesome teacher. He's super passionate about his subject and always has something interesting to contribute to any topic. You'll have to take a lot of notes, but that's all you'll need for the tests, which are easy As if you pay attention. He tends to ramble and stray off topic, but other than that he's wonderful.
Laing is very passionate about geography but is very boring. You don't have to show up and he never takes attendance but he always shows up on time and his lectures are endless. He loves to show off his pictures and tell stories about his adventures which can be dull... don't take him if you value your sanity..
Dr. Laing is a tremendous asset to UTC. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his discipline. His lectures cover tons of information that may not be all that interesting to most. His exams are rather difficult but if go to class and take good notes, you will be fine. I highly recommend taking his class if you have the opportunity to do so.
Dr. Laing is a good teacher, he has interesting stories and pictures he took himself in the slideshow. Lectures can be very drawn out and sometimes dry. He is passionate about Geography.
Dr. Laing is awesome! I don't understand the complaints about the stories, that is my favorite part. I didn't like geography and he was the reason I changed my minor to Geography. Granted he can be a tough teacher, he wants you to learn the material, but he is very helpful! As long as you go to classes and study for the map parts, you'll get an A!
Fun professor! Tests are easy even if you just slightly study. The only difficult aspect was the explorations with Google Earth. A lot of the questions are "choose the best answer" when all of the answers are correct.
Professor Laing is an awesome porofessor! I had him for several different classes and he is very helpful. If you study the notes, the tests are fairly easy. The only difficult thing is the Google Earth explorations that are homework. It is hard to decipher the correct answer, because there are multiple right answers. Great overall!
His explorations are impossible. He's very boring. You have to read anywhere from three to five articles before the test to write an essay worth 30 points without the articles present. All over worst class I have ever taken.
Professor Laing is funny. He tells cheesy jokes to try to break the ice and interacts with the class, but classes are typically large so participation isn't big. He gives study guides that come straight from the test and there is an essay but you prepare for it. His homework is long but there aren't many assignments. Overall, he's a nice guy.
I liked Dr. Laing. The only comment that I can make about his cultural geography class is that it is boring if you don't care for geography and also he literally talks the whole class. The assignments that you have to do throughout the semester are kind of hard if you don't do research but he is an amazing professor though.
This class was not as easy as I expected, but it wasn't impossible. You do have to study to make good grades. The explorations were hard though. He is really passionate about this subject, which is great, but lectures can be boring since he talks the whole time. I like the fact he does not take attendance. Overall a good teacher.
Geography of the Southeast U.S. should have been a fun class but I would tell anyone who wants to take Dr. Laing, don't. His grading is ridiculous and his long (albeit interesting) lectures have little to nothing to do with the tests and the homework essay questions prior to the tests take forever and a lot of writing His politics are thinly veiled
Terrible teacher. It's clear his job is to help the business not the students. I do not recommend.
I do not recommend.
Dr. Laing is super passionate about this subject, so he expects you to like it as much as he does. His grading on everything is really tough, so don't get discouraged when you get your grade back. Essay question is assigned before each test that is TIME CONSUMING. Better yet, everything you do in this class will waste your time and you'll be bored.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. His explorations are super hard and you don't get feedback on them to help you improve. Exams are super hard too. Each exam has 3 power points each at least 100 slides. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Very passionate about geography and the class-who wants a professor who isn't passionate or motivated to teach their subject? He is very passionate in helping students learn geography, and he will ALWAYS make sure you have what you need to understand the assignments and to do well in the course. Great professor great course.
Laing is really, really passionate about geography, and he tries to pass the enthusiasm to his students. He knows the subject well and his lectures are pretty clear and usually fairly interesting. He's really not that hard of a grader. I got a B and I skipped a bunch of classes barely put any effort in. Homework uses Google Earth, which is fun.
I have taken 5 classes from Laing and I loved every one of them. They require work, but as long as you put in effort you will get a good grade. I skipped class all the time and still got A's. His lectures one from the book which is often not told. These classes are easy as long as you communicate with him and complete the work
Worst class I've ever taken. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Dr. Laing is not the easiest teacher in the world, but he is very kind and helpful. Anything you need, he will be there for you. In this class specifically, there are six homework assignments over the course of the semester and three tests; that's it. There is not a cumulative final exam. Overall, I thought the semester was fairly easy.
He is probably the best professor on campus. He is extremely knowledgeable in Geography, and is really there for the students. He is very passionate about his lectures and it shows. Absolutely recommend him for any class.
Amazing Professor! He is incredibly friendly, and his lectures are very interesting. You will have to study for his class, but I found it enjoyable with the interesting topics.
Dr. Laing is a punny man who tries to lighten the mood with iffy jokes, and gets away with it because he does it constantly. He is helpful, and a solid lecturer. Geography can at times be boring, but he almost always keeps my attention, unlike many others. His tests are rather easy, though they do have an essay portion, so if you can't write... :/
This is a good general educational class to take. Dr. Laing is obviously passionate about geography. You could definitely skip some classes and still pass if you do the homework and read the book. The explorations are not hard if you don't wait until the last minute.
Worst class. He's a cool person but the explorations are hard and you don't get an feed back so there's no room for improvement.
In this class you must do unnecessary google earth explorations. Although this is a gen ed he makes the google earth projects ten times hard than they need to be. While I'm in th this class for a gen ed I have no desire to become a geographer, however he tries to shove this idea on you. Not a terrible class, but would not take it again.
Dr. Laing is very passionate about geography which makes his lectures bearable to sit in. There are google earth explorations that require a decent amount of time to complete. And his exams aren't the easiest either. There is a paper due for every exam as well as a larger one due at the end of the semester. Do not slack, prepare to work.
He is very kind and tries to be funny. He loves Geography, travels lot, and his experiences make his lectures very interesting. There are 6 required Google Earth explorations that are kind of difficult and take a few hours to complete and his exams are a tad difficult. He makes you work for your grade, but it's worth it.
Dr. Laing loves his Geography and is a very nice guy. However, I would not advise taking his class as an elective if you have a time consuming major. He truly makes you work for your grade which is fine but if you have a tough schedule already I would not take this class as a "bs" elective class.
Dr. Laing teaches geography well and knows his stuff, but I absolutely do not recommend this class to people unless you are actually interested in geography. There are 6 Google Earth explorations, 3 fairly difficult exams with essays and this class was quite difficult. If you study a ton then you will be okay but be prepared to always have work.
Professor Laing was a really nice man but I wanted to fall asleep every single lecture. You have to do 6 explorations and they are quite difficult, and his tests aren't any better either. If you're looking for an easy A look elsewhere.
Enthusiastic about geography, makes the class interesting and engaging
Dont take this class
There are 6 assignments with two 400 word essay questions at the end the whole semester, and it's pretty difficult to meet the word count. So if you're not a good writer, I would not recommend this class. He's very knowledgable about what he talks about though and has good first-hand experience.
Very disappointed with Laing. I was very respectful, tried hard in class. When I had a personal setback & turned in a paper a minute late I sent him a respectful email asking for mercy & got a very rude response. There are 6 explorations you have to do that take about 2-3 hours each. Most assignments are graded without explanation of deductions
I took this class for credit so wasn't expecting much. Lecture will put you to sleep. There are only 6 assignments all semester and 3 exams that are proctored and very difficult. I wouldn't take from him again
If you need to take a higher end Geography class, take a different professor. His exams are really tough and make up 45% of your grade, then you have these things called explorations that he makes really difficult for zero reason and they are worth 37% of the grade. The only easier thing in this class was the papers, but those even took me 3+ hours
The teacher is a nice guy. My issue is that this class is impossible to succeed in. There are explorations/ google earth assignments that are impossible to do well on, and kill my laptop downloading. Also, the exams are like 3 multiple choice and the rest fill in the blank and essays. The short answer questions have HUGE word counts as well.
The class is broken into papers, Google Earth explorations, and tests. If you study and pay attention in class, it's really not too difficult. Some lectures can be boring at times but it's clear he loves what he teaches. He is a nice guy and is generally understanding.
The class is mostly papers and online assignments. Each answer has to be 400 words and final paper is 8 pages. Made it so difficult for a simple geography class. Exams are fill in the blank from memory over 2-5 chapters. Take an easier option, seriously. He is nice but this class is too much
Being a Geography minor, I have taken Dr. Laing 3 times. He is very passionate and knowledgeable so I find him very interesting to listen to. He creates all his lecture material because he is so well travelled he has pictures of like everything. However, his Google Earth Exploration assignments are tedious and annoying, and are sometimes outdated.
I took this class to help fill in some of my gen-ed credits. Professor Laing was a joy to see every morning. Always an up-beat attitude and made learning geography fun. I will admit that the explorations were sometimes a pain, especially the two 300 word essays we had to write for each one.
This professor utilizes Google Earth Pro frequently and uses a sort of scavenger hunt / analysis method for homework which is very time intensive. Typically 4 to 6 essay questions mandatory minimum of three hundred words with an additional 20 multi choice questions. Do not take.
This professor is very knowledgable. He has very in depth power points and his classes are very interesting. However, there is a lot of information in a short period of time. Kind man though. Can be flexible with extensions.
He is a tough grader so you cannot make up any assignments that have already been submitted. He hardly let anyone make up assignments. The slideshows are only pictures, not words. He didn't help with homework assignments or any assignments because he stated that they are homework assignments for a reason. DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.
You take a textbook chapter reading quiz every week and have 5 big google earth exploration assignments throughout the semester. The explorations were long but interesting. I recommend starting them around a week before the due date because doing it all the night before will be hard. good choice for gen ed. recommend online version of textbook
Expects 300 words where 30 will do. Some test questions are more about memorizing trivia about random locations that may or may not even be present in the course material. Affable, at least.
I honestly I really like Professor Laing. We had 6 explorations/grades of which you use google earth for, but it is a free program plus 3 exams. They weren't very difficult but required inferring + research. His lectures he shows pictures of his travels. It helps a lot he is passionate about the subject. Take him if you like learning about culture!
You had to attend class to get a good grade. If you missed he said he posted the PowerPoint on canvas, but they were just pictures to go along with his lecture. The actual notes were what he said in class. The homework is based on google earth and is very confusing.
Not a lot of homework. Pretty chill lectures, slightly boring. The people make it fun. He loves his granddaughter.
