Really interesting professor... he assigns a lot of reading, but you really dont have to do it... his class is an easy pass, but you have to put in some work for an A. His tests aren't hard, but to get an A, you need really specific details...

He's really enthusiastic about what he is teaching and he is a really nice guy, his exams cover a lottt of information and there is a lot of assigned reading.

he is a really good teacher. overall, his tests were not hard. if you show up to class and take notes, you will do fine. DO THE STUDY GUIDES! it will help you out tremendously. takes attendance randomly, so its best to show up

The class wasn't too difficult, but he is very intelligent will challenge you to put some thought into the information that he provides you with. I definitely recommend taking a course with him.

Loftin is my favorite teacher EVER! I took his CA hist class and LOVED every minute of it! History has always been my least fav subject and FINALLY someone made it interesting and fun to learn! He is ridiculously educated in his subject and very helpful! The exams are in-class essays, but he gives you a sheet with potential questions beforehand! :)

Prof Loftin is a great teacher who really wants you to think and challenge yourself. he takes attendance and requires you to read a big book and a course reader for the class. the test were not too hard. he really loves teaching and is very helpful in his office hours. tough to get an A, but easy to get a B

Loftin was a fun and engaging professor who encouraged class discussion and critical thinking. Exams are fair and test on content from both the class and books. Reading materials are very good, I even kept two of te books! The class is challanging and not the least bit boring. And he's funny!

I loved this class and the professor is great. I got an A and it was because I took a lot of notes. He wants a lot of details in the midterm and final. He takes attendance randomly but it counts if you are borderline. Everything is written, midterm, paper and final. Except for multiple choice questions on the final. He is a great teacher.

GREAT TEACHER!!!! His lectures are intresting and he is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching! My best advice would be to take notes and attend every class since he takes attendance periodically. Definetly not an easy A but its possible.

One of the best professors I've ever had. He is very passionate with every subject he's gone over. He's very clear and whatnot in explaining things as well. He's quite a funny teacher as well. I highly recommend him for any AMST class really.

Overall a great class to take! Loves what he teaches, super passionate about it! Makes lectures sound exciting. However, he does take attendance very seriously and WILL mark you down points for each absence. Also, make sure you thoroughly read through the texts and online readings because he expects a lot of details on the midterm and final.

Great class! Took it as a UD GE, so not my major or interest, but he made the class very enjoyable. Rarely read the text and only used the text to review for the tests. only 1 paper due for class. Very understanding prof. Does take attendance, but will not count off if you speak to him. take good notes and this is an A for sure.

I learned so much about different peoples and how they've interacted with one another throughout California's history! The exams are essay prompts that he selects from a list of given questions. His style of teaching is very intersectional, and the material really sticks with you. 1 Midterm, 1 Essay, and 1 Final. This is a great class..

I didnt do the assigned readings but I did use the textbook with the study guides that he provides to study for the exams. Take notes in class and do the study guides. I worked really hard and got a B+ because of the essay. He grades by detail. take him!

Loftin is very friendly and passionate about what he teaches. The material is difficult but you shouldn't do too badly as long as you work hard. This class certainly isn't an easy A but he makes it interesting.

Not an easy A by any means, but a pass is guaranteed. 1 paper, 3 exams. This guy is one of the funniest & most outgoing professors ever. He's awesome, just wish he graded a little easier, especially since it is a GE course.

Loftin is enthusiastic about pop culture and has a lot to say about every topic (race, sex, politics, etc.). He teaches the class from a historical perspective. I opened the book only to study (the study guide will list terms/people you need to know). There were only 2 exams and 1 paper. Attendance is mandatory (part of your grade is based off it).

Very passionate. Not an easy A, but a very enjoyable class. Learned a ton. There are study guides and reading the text is required. I personally googled the book and keyword searched the study guide and did alright, had I read and included finer details in my essay portion of the midterm/final I would have gotten an A. Great teacher, one of the best in my college experience. He is very passionate about his teachings and he actually makes the class surprisingly fun. It's important to go to class in order to do well on the written exams. He plays a lot of Youtube clips and generates class discussions that are on topic but also interesting. I highly recommend him!

TAKE HIM! He is easily the best professor I have ever had! He is beyond enthusiastic about the course and is so helpful! You will need your book for tests and you NEED to study for tests by using the book and good notes. The final is worth a lot but if you study, his tests are by no means impossible.

Loftin is such an enthusiastic teacher! Grade sheet is passed around most classes so you kinda have to go. One paper, midterm and final. GIves study guides for both tests so that was the only time I skimmed the book to get answers for my guide, otherwise all lecture base (take good notes). DO STUDY GUIDE & GO OVER IT ALOT b4 tests. AMAZING TEACHER! You must attend class! Entire grade based of participation, midterm, essay, and final. The midterm and final were essay questions. Gives reviews so as long as you do the reviews you will pass. 3 hour class but felt like it flew by because his lectures were so interesting. Great class!

His class was very informative and insightful. Although there are times where the lectures may seem like a drag, that's more of a mentality a student comes to class with. He does a very good job with making the past events relevant to the way society is today. HE'S HILARIOUS and VERY EXPRESSIVE. I was never a history person, but his changed this.

I really enjoyed this course and Professor Loftin's style of teaching. A lot of the topics were very interesting and related directly to my (Communications) degree and honors project. Super helpful! That being said - you really need to study and attend class/take notes. This isn't an "easy A" but Loftin is an understanding guy and a fair grader.

This class was really enjoyable. It offered a new insight toward history that I didnt really know about before. I do recommend reading the book, but honestly I didnt really read to much. Everything given to you on his study guides I looked up on wikipedia and memorized the basic information. Definitely by no means an easy class though.

I really enjoyed this class. He is really interested in the subject and seems to know a lot. The class isn't easy. There is a lot of reading, and you have to write book reports. The exams are super easy if you complete the study guide and do the readings. I recommend everyone to take his class.

Being my first year at a University i was lucky to have Loftin as a professor. He gives the most interesting lectures (even with 1900's and before lectures) and stays on topic. Given there's only 2 exams (short answer & essay) and 1 paper (5-7) if you write notes and do the readings you'll pass. Everything you learn in class is on the tests.

SO ENTERTAINING. Professor Loftin's lectures are absolutely amazing. It is so fun and great to watch a professor lecture on something he is so obviously passionate about. There are only 2 exams and 1 paper, so that's a downside. Exams are very tough. BE PREPARED TO STUDY. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ON THE PAPER. No extra credit.

Super sweet guy, and a really interesting class. He assigned a book, but I never cracked it once. I just googled the terms from it that were on the study guide and I did fine. Lectures were really good and very engaging. One essay that's based on YouTube that's pretty easy. If you're looking for a fun, easy Gen Ed class, this is it.

Tests are all short answer and two essay questions. You have to be VERY detailed which means you have to read and you have to attend lecture. His lectures are very interesting because he is a very good speaker. The class overall is very interesting.

Phenomenal professor at CSUF. For a professor that relies solely on his lectures and some outside reading his content is entertaining to say the least. Professor Loftin made American Studies a lot more interesting than it sounds. Towards the 2nd half of the class we learned about music & culture, and youtube was definitely his bff for showing us videos. He gets so into the lectures with his hand movements and all. His exams are take home & they're essays. He likes specification & A's aren't easy.

He lectures the entire class and does not put notes online, so if you are going to miss class then be ready to get notes from someone in the class. 1 page summary on readings, two 3 page papers for the midterm, 5 page short paper, and two 3 page paper for the final. One of the best Professor lectures I ever had. He made everything interesting, he had clips for everything he talked about and the class was lively with discussion. It wasn't difficult at all. To be honest I never even bought the book, I never took notes that well, and I basically just sat there and took in Pop Culture. It was a great class.

He is truly a great professor who has a strong passion for American Studies! I took his summer class for AMST 201 and we didn't take any exams. But, we did have 3 essays, and 3 chapter summaries , but was doable. He truly gives well informed lectures and surely knows about the subject. Take good notes and read and the A should be easy to receive.

Definitely a class where you are going to have to read in order to pass. If you dont show up to class than say good bye to your grade. In order to get a good grade on his papers you need to use the information he is giving out in lecture days and on the readings. He does NOT post any powerpoints on TITANium.

Loftin is an amazing professor!!! All the information he taught our class has been engraved in my head because it is JUST THAT INTERESTING! You do have to read and write a lot, which I hate, but the books and chapters he made us read were VERY ENJOYABLE. I took American Studies 201 and 300 with Loftin. His class was simply entertaining!

Prof Loftin is so passionate about his work and I really admired that. He is lecture heavy but they can be very interesting if you take notes and pay close attention. I truly learned so much from taking this WGST 100 class with Professor Loftin. Eeaxh class we learned something new. Very interesting. If youre interested in learning about womens roles, the LGBTQIA community, etc. this is the perfect class for you! The assignments are very straight forward, but he can be a tough grader.

DO NOT SKIP CLASS or the papers will be tough. One short book and a bunch of online readings. The readings can be a little tricky because of the time period they're from.

There is zero homework, no pop quizzes. Only 4 papers in the entire semester. Caveat tho is you have to be in class to take notes in order to write your papers because the prompt is all based on his lectures. If you search for info on the internet and use them on the paper, he'll know and will deduct points. His lectures hold plenty of info.

This was one of my favorite classes this semester. An A is easily attainable if you get your papers reviewed during office hours before you turn them in. Prof. Loftin is kind and has very entertaining lectures, but he does grade papers thoroughly. I don't completely agree with Prof. Loftin's ideas about the American Dream, but I learned a lot.

His lectures were always interesting and while I did miss a few lectures his class was one of the few that I felt bad for not going. They were genuinely interesting and the material is pretty easy. Know the terms and dates, gives you a great study guide, would totally take his class again

Professor Loftin is insanely knowledgable and passionate about history. I HIGHLY recommend him. Youre required to write 3 essays that are worth 25% of your grade, except the last one, which is 40%. And 10% for attendance. Attendance is mandatory Bc he is lecture heavy and everything he discusses will be used for your paper. Amazing professor!

Great Professor. He is lecture heavy but cares about students' feedback so there is much interaction within the class. Tests are not a "give me" and are short answer/ essay-based. You have to be in class and read the book in order to get a good grade but it is not a boring class by any means. He is fun and I enjoyed his class very much.

Such a respected professor who genuinely cares about the students. He bases his grading off of 3 papers, each gradually have more pages and analysis based of the texts/videos he provides throughout the semester. His feedback helps so much and you are able to send rough drafts before each paper is due in order to earn a better grade.

This professor is probably one of the best that I had taken here in CSUF! No homework, quizzes and exams! Your only graded based on three essays that he would HELP YOU OUT WITH!! The feedback he gives is amazing on the papers if you send him the drafts! He is truly an kind individual and I honestly enjoyed the class! 10/10 RECOMMEND!! :)

i loved loftin! took him for history of sexual orientations and he was so fascinating! our class was small, only 9 people, so group discussion was really quite wonderful. we watched paris is burning and lots of old music videos, which i loved. only graded on 3 papers, but he's very flexible on deadlines. such a sweet person. take him if u can!!!

Loftin has been my favorite professor. He knew what he was talking about in his lectures. He only assigns three essays, the third being considered our final. Each prompt is easy to write if you pay attention and are a good note taker. He also makes himself available during office hours if you want him to review your rough draft.

Course is weighted mainly on 3 essays overall with our last being our Final. It's take home so we don't have to attend class in finals week. Recommend to finish essay before finals to get it out of the way w/ other classes. Keeping up on readings and taking good notes is helpful in creating ideas for essay. Good feedback on drafts.

For the essays, you will have to watch the lectures and do some reading, as each essay requires you to incorporate course material. Overall enjoyed his class and him as a professor.

Without being too dramatic, Dr.Loftin changed my life.I was regularly brought to tears in his lectures. He is an outstanding lecturer. Professor Loftin was a good professor overall. Note that ATTENDANCE IS PART OF YOUR GRADE. He will pass out an attendance sheet at the beginning to each class and keep track of your attendance and put towards your final grade. The class was graded only a few things, (3 bluebooks; including final). If you tend to skip lots of class, I would avoid.

Attendance is mandatory, but Professor Loftin is a very enthusiastic and engaging lecturer. The course is also only graded by attendance/participation, midterms, and the final. It is also quite reading heavy but a notecard can be brought to exams.

If you get the chance to take from Professor Loftin, do it! His lectures were so engaging & always a highlight for me every single week. He truly made it fun to learn. Be sure to attend class since him taking attendance is always at random. Only graded on 3 bluebooks & participation so do the readings/attend class, you'll be fine. Highly recommend!
