Very difficult when compared to other teachers in the subject. Great course though.
Great Class! Bro. Manscill is a great teacher who works hard to make sure you understand the material and helps you prepare for the test. If you take Bro. Manscill there is no reason not to get an 'A'

Teachings of the Living Prophets was a GREAT class! Bro. Manscill isn't too difficult, but you do have to do your reading and take the quizes. This class was pretty easy to get a good grade in, but a lot of it is for your own personal gain so what you put into it is what you get out of it- which is
Great teacher! His test aren't hard. It's not hard to get a good grade in his class!
One of the kindest men I have ever met, his class was interesting and uplifting. Highly recommed him to anyone.
Brother Manscill, is a teacher who really, sincerely cares about his students. He shows it in how he teaches and how he strives to help you before and after class. He has a broad and intimate understanding of the scriptures and the words of the prophets. If you want to learn from a good professor take it from Brother Manscill the master teacher!
An amazing teacher! He really brings the subject to life and has informative lectures. Tests are not too bad and the projects are pretty mild.
He's an awesome teacher and an awesome class.
Brother Manscill is extremely knowledgeable on this subject. He is easily the kindest person I've ever met, and he cares deeply for his students. A great guy to go to for any reason. Just looking at him you can tell he is firmly connected with the spirit. Taking his class has been an awesome experience.
He is an great teacher that really cares about the subject and is very knowldgeable about it too. Fairly easy if you study for his test and do the weekly quizes.
Not a bad class. All the PowerPoints are on blackboard, so if he didn't take role you'd learn the same material. He grades the class presentations easily.
Brother Manscill cares a lot about the subject matter, and he brings a great spirit into the room when he teaches. But it feels like he has never taught a college class before. Very unorganized, and will often give misinformation about tests and assignments. If you can live through that, the class isn't too hard, and you'll learn a lot.
Not super impressed! Great guy, but the class was a mess. You have online quizzes before every class that you can take as many times as you need to get 100% but they aren't worth much. The grade comes down to the midterm and final, and though they were easy. I taught myself more preparing for the tests than I ever learned in class. EASY "A"!!
This man is amazing! He has been one of the most influential teachers and people in my life. He has helped me see exactly what I want to do with my future. If you want a good religion teacher, take Brother Manscill!
Living Prophets is great! He KNOWS the Brethren, brings class to life. Read & do online quizes-very easy. He teaches with the spirit, learn inside stories about the Brethren. Tests aren't too hard if you study what he tells you to. Do reading and you'll be fine. Have 2 midterms & final, read biography and do book report, present on one of Brethren.
Okay class, not the most interesting guy. If you take the evening class, then you really struggle with paying attention.
This class really wasn't that great. He's an okay guy but gives off a wierd vibe of how cool he is because he knows the brethren personally. i wouldn't really recommend it. it's easy though.
The best part of this class was the readings we had to do on our own. Prof. Manscill 's ego and belief that he knows all and is always right really hinderd how I reseptive I was. Most of the class was taught in student presentations (hard to listen to!). Online quizzes before each class (not hard, just annoying) you can get an A, but at what cost?
I took Dr. Manscill for D&C before, so I knew what I was getting into. As usual, he taught effectively, prepared you for examinations and is VERY fair. For 333, you do have to write a single spaced 3 page book report on an apostle's biography though.
I'll admit, this wasn't my favorite religion class. Brother Manscill slowly grew on me eventually, but you have to really get past the ego-centric nature of his teaching style. There's a lot to be learned from him, and he's okay once you get used to him. Prepare well for his tests though, they can be a bit much.
Worst teacher at BYU. Attendance is graded. I had class once a week and dreaded that day. Tests were guessing games, but its not hard to outsmart him. I made an A and was surprised since I skipped some classes. Biggest downside: he is rude--a total know-it-all. He is full of himself and he treats others like dirt.
Pretty easy going guy who is more than willing to work with you and a fairly easy class for D&C. I recommend him.
I didn't enjoy this class at all. I agree completely with most of the comments here. He's a good guy, but a little full of himself and his tests are ridiculous. You're not free to ask an intellectually honest question because of the teacher's personality. I had a really hard time sitting through class and being uplifted.
I expected D&C class to help me develop helpful study habits and interest. Turns out, I'm just required to memorize his own pseudo-doctrine, guess on tests (he never talked about half the material), and put up with his ego-centric nature. Nothing in this class has actually been applicable or insightful. I strongly recommend: DO NOT TAKE MANSCILL!!!
I wish i had enjoyed this class more. i was really excited about it but was terribly let down. i felt that doctrine was pushed aside to learn about marginally interesting and arbitrary facts about the apostles. i wish i had felt uplifted at all during lectures. Manscill wont be recommended by me.
i actually really enjoyed this class...i'm suprised at so many negative comments...i felt it was well taught and uplifting...i learned a lot and did well in the class...
Not a bad class! I thought it would be a miserable class because of the comments I've read. But Dr. Manscill did not reflect what I've read.
What are people talking about in those nagative previous comments? He deserves better feedback. He is very amiable and is willing to help students. The only problem is being able to catch him- very busy. He is very intelligent and you'll do well if you dig into the D&C. Recommend- take Church History at the same time, you'll be better off.
He's a good guy, knows his stuff. But he is a poor lecturer. He doesn't finish thoughts and is often confusing. I don't recommend this professor.
All of his questions are from out in "left field." Nice person, but I would suggest someone else as your teacher.
Don't take him. Boring.
this class was ok. His powepoint slides were over the top and every class period I felt like he was rushing through to get all the information. ok guy, bad class if you can take it from someone else
Quizzes are ridiculous. Lectures are really boring, trite, and not very uplifting. Test was fine. Not that nice of a guy.
do not take him. He had so much information he would rush every time we had class. you dont really know what he will put on the tests. He is boring and his powepoints have so much info on them its ridiculose
Manscill is very knowledgeable, but he is also very out of touch with the needs and wants of his students. If you take this class, keep in mind that it is about HIM and HIS knowledge, not about what you learn. Very frustrating professor--and impossible tests that he HAD to curve or else everyone would have failed. If you have a choice, do not take.
He is a great guy but a not such a great professor. He would have us read, and quiz us but what he decided was the right answer was not usually what the readings had told us the right answer. I took him for OT and he always had to be corrected on his information, I don't feel he knows the Old Testament as well as he should to teach it.
Nice guy, though he sometimes comes off as arrogant. Terrible at lecturing. Doesn't complete his sentences and mixes up names/pronouns, which makes him very confusing. Also, several times I've heard him teach things that were totally wrong. Quizzes are very difficult, though he's lenient on the answers. Tests are hard, also. Don't take him.
Bro. Manscill is the best religion teacher I have had so far. He is so funny and really kind. He makes it a point to get to know everyone in the class (he made a video the first day with us all saying our names and where we were from into the camera...ha) Class was easy and really interesting.
Those who want to be edified, don't take this class. He encourages shady discussion, disagrees with modern revelation, and tries to get you to buy like 4 extra books. My guard always goes up in this class, because I just don't believe him. I don't feel like I'm learning much except a few random facts, and lectures too quickly to take good notes.
Great professor. He really cares about your grade and your success. Tests are fairly difficult, but he allows you to use notes/scriptures on them. If you use them, you'll do fine. If not you'll fail. But he won't allow you to fail. One of the best professors here.
Nice guy, strong testimony, TERRIBLE tests and quizzes. Dont take this guy.
His class is super boring. It was hard taking it in the morning because I couldn't stay awake. You focus more on worthless facts during the class then actually feeling the spirit and you are tested on a lot of little details that you have to memorize from his slides. Didn't like the class very much.
Did not enjoy this class at all, would never suggest it to anyone. He is condescending and class was not fun to go to.
I hear he has a new TA that has revamped the tests and even does reviews. Basically tells you all the answers for the tests. He TA'd in the summer and was super helpful.
Bro. Manscill knows a TON about D&C. Exams were closed scripture and extremely hard with specific detail (like matching verses, names of sections, people present, dates, places). More of a history exam than anything else. Pop reading quizzes in class. Go to the TA test reviews. Take good notes in class since powerpoints are useless for exams.
This was the worst religion teacher I have ever taken, his test are ridiculously hard! He doesn't teach about 1/4th of the test and if you don't go to the review session you will miss those questions. you have to write a 3 page paper, and give a class project. He expects way too much for a religion class! be smarter then I was and don't take him.
This was the hardest Religion class I hav taken at BYU, 1/4th of test questions were his interpretation on scriptures. He cares about his students but tries to teach too much in the class he doesn't get through half of his slide and expects you to study them to get a good grade. My advise do not take from Bro. Manscil his class is no good!
Bro Manscill was my favorite religion teacher, his test were very fair as well as the grading of them. After the tests were done he would go through comonly missed problems and ended up giving credit to everyone for the most commonly missed ones. GO TO THE TA REVIEW the TA literally gave the answers that were on the test, go and take good notes.
I really loved this class. Bro Manscill knows a ton about the D&C and he loves teaching it. You just need to listen in class, take notes, and go to the TA reviews to do well in the class. It is a little harder than your average religion class, but he is very interesting to listen to. I recommend this class.
He will work with you very well.
Good professor. Well organized class. Very knowledgeable about D&C and Church history. Cares about his students. I recommend him.
He's such a nice man and is always accommodating when you go to him. His classes seemed long because we never got through all the material and often times, his comments or discussion seemed rather unrelated to the first half of D&C. He's very knowledgeable on the material he teaches but I think his excitement for said material causes him to tangent
unable to answer any questions about D&C doctrine. EXTREMELY condescending, not approachable at all. Don't comment in class, or you'll be personally attacked. Paper is a joke. Every class he tries to literally go through 100+ slides, only ever gets to half of them. Disorganized. Pointless. Devoid of all light. You name it. avoid like the plague.
Dr. Manscill knows everything about the D&C (he wrote the student manuals for D&C and History of the Church), so you will come out of this class knowing A TON. However, all that knowledge comes at a price. This is by far the hardest religion class I've ever taken at BYU, and as a person I find him a bit arrogant and condescending.
Although he seems like a nice guy, I really wish I would not have taken this class. He is very knowledgeable, but seems somewhat arrogant about it. When answering student questions he is often condescending and very unclear. In addition, the course material is very disorganized. He adds long readings to the schedule a few days before they are due.
He is a nice guy, but the class was terrible. It was incredibly disorganized and the information compared to the amount of reading he expects you to know for a pop quiz is ridiculous (i.e. who was the 3rd person baptized in the church). He does take feedback from the class though.
From reading these ratings, I was terrified to take him, but he was better than I expected. That said, he wasn't particularly good. He is a nice guy, but I don't recommend him. The readings are long. The questions are obscure, and don't really enhance my appreciation or understanding of the gospel. The tests are difficult. There are better teachers
My favorite Religion Professor to date. He really tries to give a decent and fair amount of homework. He loves and cares about you. When I walk into his classroom I feel a sense of peace. May seem a bit harsh at times, I don't think he is. He grew up in a large farming family. Always answers every question even when we're behind on the material
Prof. Manscill gives so much of himself. You can tell this is his passion and that he cares more about the understanding of his students than he does for deadlines and quotas. He addresses difficult doctrines head on. Honestly he tells it how it is and the self righteous kids that can't handle difficult topics attack him personally. harsh but true.
Class based off of powerpoint and there is way too much of it. Test and quiz questions can be sometimes too specific and focus on inane details. However, Professor Manscill is more than willing to help/answer questions and the TA review sessions for the midterms and finals were a godsend so make sure to attend them.
Learned a lot about Church history. Sometimes lectures were a little dry, but overall I enjoyed them! We had reading assignments every week, but it wasn't bad.
Easy A, lots of readings. Pretty Boring though in lecture. If you do the outside readings then you do not need to pay much attention in class.
The worst religion professor I have had. He is condescending and rude to students in class. His focus is on unimportant details rather than strengthening students' testimonies. Beware of his tests and quizzes. They are extremely difficult and on material he doesn't cover in class as he tries to go through 120 slides in 40 minutes. Big mistake.
If you can endure the class (and you have to because more than 2 absences result in a grade drop) this is an easy class. Homework is once a week skimming so many online readings to find answers to a study guide that go along with the tests. I never took notes in class because everything that you need to know is in the study guide homeworkers. Class is awful and we got so behind because he would waste the first half hour of class before getting to the lesson. He got distracted with all of his personal knowledge of church history.
Honestly? Awful class. Did not feel the spirit once the whole semester. He teaches facts and expects you to remember them as well as dates. Not spiritually based at all.
Trust me when I say you should avoid Manscill like the plague.
VERY knowledgeable! I honestly would AVOID the class. If you miss class 2+ times your grade is dropped a letter. Difficult class b/c having to know many names/places etc. Tests are open scriptures/note which is nice. But many little organizational problems with his class is what bugged me. Go to test reviews if you take him. He is a very nice man!
Bro Manscill knows exactly what he's talking about. He has had tons of experiences such as teaching abroad, writing church books, and working directly with the presidency of the church. If you want to actually learn, take his class. If you want do nothing and still get an A then maybe he's not for you. Awesome professor and even better person!
Nice guy, but rambles. Sometimes his information in rambling was cringeworthy. The lecture on "eternal nocmissions"? We were all uncomfortable, but since he's a nice guy, no one had the heart to correct him. Or maybe we were all too embarrassed. The one thing I learned. The BOM is not a geography book. And too much about Fiji. Give Fiji a rest.
Dr. Manscill was one of my favorite professors in the religion department. He was always there to help you with anything you needed and was so willing to help you do well in the class. He is always working to improve and teach the class better. Willing to admit when he is wrong, but also willing to give his opinion on doctrines that are not clear.
He's a good person but a terrible teacher. He's a bit condescending if you ask a "dumb" question. He tries to show off how much he knows and every class is a 60-120 slide ppt which he doesn't start until AT LEAST half way through the hour. He mixes his opinion with doctrine a lot, so be on your toes. I learned facts, but no testimony building.
Brother Manscill tends to get off topic a lot. He really knows what he is talking about though! A really enjoyable person who cares about who you are. There are in class quizzes every single class that are a good portion of your grade and you can't just take the quiz and leave, he'll know and doc you points.
I feel like a lot of the things taught in this class (Foundations of the Restoration) were not quite true/accurate or were things that oughtn't to be said outside of personal scripture study, as they were more opinion than fact. He means well, and he's a wonderful person, but he's also a product of his generation. I don't recommend this class.
Brother Mancill was a professor that I really wish I had never taken. It was frustrating to watch him with the TA and he made many comments that were offensive. The homework was a bit too much and he was very self centered.
I thought his class was awesome! The man has written official manuals for the Church so if you dont think he knows what hes talking about, youre mistaken. Hes easily reached during his office hours, even if its to talk about things not related to the class. Great professor, just do your readings and show up and youll be fine.
The man takes one of the standard works and turns it into a fairly difficult history class, light on doctrine. He focuses so much on names, dates, places, etc., that it removes the motivation to try and have spiritual experiences. His quizzes focus on the smallest parts of sections; I felt like I didn't read the right section after taking quizzes.
Super easy. As long as you show up to class and go to reviews you will pass. You can take a card in to the test with notes. For being a religion class, really doesn't feel like anything is based on the spirit, and if a question seems to be an obvious answer it feels like he answers trying to make you feel stupid and show that he knows more than you
Don't even get me started on how horrible this online course was. The set up was messy and unclear, and the expectations for the exam were ridiculous. I've finished all 16 lessons and only 3 of them have been graded, so how am I supposed to know what to study harder on?.... if I don't know what I got wrong? I didn't gain anything from this class.
This class was extremely disorganized. I would not recommend it to anyone. The online class is all reading. Page after page of historical information. The tests focus on the historical information and hardly anything on doctrine. Directions to the online discussions were not clear and feedback did not get back to me until months after I did it.
Class and class material/homework doesn't match the tests. He tells you to study for one thing and the test will be completely different. You will miss points because of his mistakes. You can learn a lot in this class but expect a lot of homework and frustration.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS. Pretty easy, not a ton of work, no busy work, tests come directly from the material and a lot of questions are directly from the quizzes that you can review. Also very informative. Seriously, highly recommend this class!
Bro. Manscill just spit facts the whole semester. I don't feel that his class was too difficult, except for the hours and hours of busy work due each week. We also had a 10-12 page essay due at the end of the semester, IN A RELIGION CLASS. This professor's class is pretty ridiculous. This was Religion 225 foundations of the restoration blended.
Bro. Manscill is possibly the best religion professor at BYU. Instead of teaching his opinion and beliefs to his class he teaches the doctrine and principles. Therefore, his class is straight forward and educational. No more faith crises because the teacher's beliefs are different from yours. I highly suggest taking D&C online from Bro. Manscill.
The worst religion professor that I have had- this was my last religion class. He was rude and condescending to students and TA. I felt blatantly disrespected in class. His classes were worthless other than for attendance points. He was uncomfortable teaching difficult topics and avoided difficult questions. Struggled to answer students questions.
I took a blended course from him over canvas, which is BYU's online resource. he never ever ever responded to my emails about concerns in the class. a full unit of his course was mis-graded for me and he couldn't ever get back to my emails at the very end of the semester. not too respectful to his students in my opinion.
Took the online class from him. My effort for the course was minimal and you hardly interact with him. I have no complaints, because the course only had a few regular assignments and a final paper that you had to do. If you want an easy class, this one from him isn't too bad.
I loved this online course. Easiest religion class Ive taken. However I saw little to no interaction from the professor but his T.A.s were fantastic! They made the class great and I appreciated their reminders & test overviews. Highly recommend this easy religion course. Readings, quizzes, and discussion boards.
Brother Manscill is a sweet guy, but this course had unrealistic expectations. Our midterm study guide was composed of each unit's "learning expectations". And yet half of the test was unrelated material. I think it's unrealistic to test students on things that they are not expected to learn. Take this class from someone else. Anyone else.
Bad enough that I got on RateMyProfessor to submit a review. It was like a terrible high school class. Full of "write 100 words on a semi-political question in the way we want, then respond to 3 other classmates who are answering the same question." "No watching pointless 1-hour lectures at 2x-speed!" "When we say 100 words, we mean 150 minimum."
A consistent workload for sure, but it's also small and can take no more than 2 hours a week if you play it right. There's little communication with the professor in the online class, but the lessons are spiritual and require little memorization of useless facts. Would take again from him, probably will if I have the chance.
Hardest 2 credit class ever. He is very smart, but he is a church historian, not a church educator. His ppts are a hundred slides long, but he won't get halfway through them. But then the test questions are from the slides he skips through quickly. The tests are not from the learning targets he gives you, but from his random slides.
I scored above average on the midterm and got a C. This class is so full of material that it was really hard to memorize everything. His lectures are not very clear and are hard to follow. Do not recommend the blended class. The online portion has a lot of busy work. Tests are super hard.
So the main problem was that this class is extremely difficult for a 2 credit religion class. If you take the blended course there is a lot of reading, quizes, discussions, and analysis assignments. Also the lectures barely stratched the surface of each unit. But if you study the study guide in depth you should be fine for the tests.
I believe that Professor Manscill has good intentions. However, if you are looking for a spiritually uplifting class this is not it. He is not tactful in the way that he responds to student questions. There is very little respect in the classroom. If hes the only option that works, take it. Its not too hard. Otherwise take it from someone else.
I'm conflicted because this was a pretty easy class and I got the grade I wanted (higher than a C), but there was zero engagement between student and professor which was kind of a bummer. All of the assignments were very clear and easy to complete, though time-consuming. Pretty interesting material. Just a lot of busy work.
"I don't understand why religion classes have to be the hardest classes at BYU" when people say that they're referring to classes structured like this one. Hard tests, 3 assignments a week, lots of reading. He seems like a nice guy but this class is frustrating. I got 100 on every assignment but struggled on the TWO TESTS he gave worth 40% of grade
Hated this class. I am Ex-Mormon, so I expected to hate foundations, but this was especially bad. This professor's content was the epitome of everything that I hate about the church and so I would strongly suggest that if you are at all progressive or nuanced to avoid him at all costs. There is no reason for a religion class to be this difficult.
This class by this professor is not very academically sound and I found a lot of his assignments to be filled with leading questions or require you to turn off your critical thinking. I honestly feel like this class has made me dumber. It was a very frustrating class to survive through.
I am sure this professor is great, but this course was not fun. The information and coursework were way too much for a two-credit class, and the midterm and final were challenging for no reason. The group discussions were the worst part of the class, as they made it seem like students were not allowed to disagree with church standards.
I took a blended class and it was fairly easy to balance. The tests are a little harder than I anticipated, I got a C+ which was above class average on the first midterm. His lectures are long, attendance is worth 15 points which is more than our weekly quizzes. 2-3 assignments weekly.
I took REC C 225 completely online and all interactions were with the TA. This class is really just memorization. If you want to do the bare minimum skim the lectures, complete the midterm/final study guide, and look up a quiz let with answers to all the quizzes after the lectures.
Prof Manscill is a really great guy. This specific class however, is a joke. There is a lot of homework and 1 project that is ridiculous. Prepare to spend a lot of time reading every week and expect 6-8 assignments from this 2 credit class.
I took this completely online. It felt like 90% of it was busy work and like I was being babysat through the topics. Way too much work for what it was. However, it was super easy, just time consuming. Not the worst option, but I'm sure there's better
I took the class online and I didn't even know who my professor was until I needed help from him. He was not involved, made the midterm and final WAY HARDER than it needed to be and the discussion questions were terrible. I felt the Spirit of contention more than the Spirit of the Lord.
I took Foundations hybrid. I thought the way he structured the homework was clear and made it easy to complete. He made covering difficult topics clear and his exams weren't too hard. If you do the homework, you'll be fine.
He has a lot of homework that is due online! he's a great teacher very kind very accommodating to work with you tests are mainly on the learning objectives ((Also in the slides presented in class (Their also on line though)) which are introduced at the beginning of each course but class attendance is worth a lot of points.
Really nice professor and super knowledgeable about the Restoration and controversial topics, but lectures were kind of boring. The class was half online, so there was a lot of work outside of class to keep up with. The tests were tough and required lots and lots of memorization.
Prof Manscill is a great option if you are looking to take any religion class at BYU. He is so knowledgable! He is honest in what he teaches and is willing to answer questions students have whatever they might be. I would recommend Prof Manscill for those who want to actually learn and not just get an easy A.
This class was a lot of work for a 2-credit course. Lots of reading, quizzes, and tough exams. Definitely not the most spiritually uplifting experience. Though the professor has good intentions, his teaching style can be hit-or-miss. Using Unstuckstudy and the study guide helped me prepare for the tests.
If I could give someone a zero I would. This class was 100% ruined by this professor. My main reasons for disliking this class and this professor are: 1- Walls and Walls of barely useful text 2- One and only one answer even though religion doesn't work like that 3- Repetitive and EXTREMELY redundant 4- Leading in actions and words hated this class
From what I have seen, this class is similar no matter the professor. I liked the online format and was able to do all the week's worth of material in a couple hours. There's a semester long project but it isn't bad. He is accessible through email and his TAs are good. The tests were a bit difficult for me, but he ended up curving our grades
No recorded lectures, so all I know about him is based on the readings, activities, and course set up. Tests focus on dates, names, and details so make sure you REALLY know those well. I enjoyed the activities and discussions, and the readings were interesting. I would say it feels a bit more like a history class than a religion class in general.
