this is the funniest man ever. I hate science but I love his class.
This professor sucks! He teaches things that are not even right or in the book.

Don't take it. He was funny, but couldn't teach the material. I dreaded going to class every time.
Craig Martin is great! How could you not like the guy?!
The best teacher i have ever had in a large classroom setting! Not only is he funny, and keeps the boring subject of Biology interesting, he is tough and will make you earn your grade. Excellent teacher and if you need to take BIO 100, take his class!
His teaching of biology 100 is horrible. All he ever talks about is plants. Yes, plants are biology. But there are other things more interesting to learn about than plants!
He goes out of his way to have two student help sessions per week, and handles the huge class very well. He doesn't lie--he tests on what he lectures on, and you have to study. But I think he's one of the best professors at KU!
Mr. Martin is an awsome teacher. He can relate to a college student eventhough he is from a different generation. His daily demos are a great way to break up lectures. Maybe if people show up to class and pay attention they would get a better grade.
I had Dr. Martin for the plant half of "Physiology of Organisms." His lectures were not just informative but entertaining. His exams were really tough, but he curved them to a 75% avg. He is the reason why I chose to be a Biology teacher myself.
Though he is entusiastic and funny in class his tests are deadly. He knows this and is trying to amend his "tests from hell".
This man stares at women. He creeps me out.
Martin's a funny guy. He'll get you with his tests if you don't study. If you give his a real shot and study, you'll do great.
Dr. Martin is one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life.

He is a great guy and will help anyone if they need it, but his lectures are all over the place and hard to follow. His tests are awful, and he spends way too much time on plants....
He's probably the funniest professor on campus, BUT his class is hard. He does curve the tests up to an average of 75, but he's all over the place and the material is hard to understand when you take notes over things he just rambles and doesn't write down. Other than that, his daily demos are fun.
His class is always entertaining, even when he covers material that isn't that interesting. His pre-class music gets odd at times, but that's his deal. As long as one studies for his tests, things should be OK. Yes they are hard, but he says everything that needs to be known in class.
He is the worst most impossible teacher I've ever had in my life. His test's are impossible!
I really enjoyed his lectures. He made the most boring topics halfway entertaining and interesting. Everyone says the tests are hard. They are a little tricky, but if you take decent notes and study a little, you'll do fine. Thumbs up for Dr. Martin!

Mr. Martin makes class bearable. But it's easy to get bored and lost if you don't pay attention. You MUST attend class everyday if you don't you will fail. The tests are very hard and getting a C is good.He emphasizes WAY too much on plants and if your not interested take the class with someone else
Impossible material to understand with his teaching methods. Very fast talker, and made the assumption that everyone understood based on the fact that in a class of 1000 people nobody would raise their hand. I'm guessing this was because people were still trying to keep up with their notes.
Professor Martin is awesome. He makes boring lectures hilarious with his wicked sense of humor. The tests are sort of tough, but definitely not as bad as other people make them seem. The music he plays before class was usually amazing too like The Butthole Surfers and Machine Head.
The class was very boring and it wasnt very easy to grasp concepts. He does offer study sessions before tests but they didnt appel to me that much. Only points in the class came from Tests.
"Daily Demos" weren't daily...very random and kind of silly. I studied for the first test for 15 hours and got a 72%. His help sessions weren't all that helpful and his lectures were ALL OVER the place. Take this class in the spring. I hear it is a LOT easier and POSSIBLE to get an A.
I loved Martin! I thought that his teaching style was a little abstract but he is really funny and makes Bio fun! He adds sexual comments here and there to keep you on your feet!
his lectures are all over the place and it's hard to study for his exams. i think he likes failing people.
I got 100% on every test. You'd have to be retarded not to. He's not that hard a teacher, and it's not that hard a subject if you've had high school biology. He's a great professor that makes class fun. It's college, not a place where you just get handed A's.
Easy A. If you struggle in any 100 level class your just stupid.
I HATED THIS PROFESSOR THE MOST!!HE TRIES TO BE FUNNY, BUT IT"S SO NOT FUNNY!!!His EXAMS are NOT covering from a textbook! very boring and worst class ever!!!

All around bad professor...his lectures were understandable but when it came down to the exams, his goal is to get you to fail...the worst professor at KU
he is not as bad as everyone thinks. he tries to be funny, but he is really not. he is a fair man though, he'll admit if the test was too hard and curve it. he tries to be as helpful as he can to the 1000 students he has by having HELP! sessions where you can ask questions. his exams arent horrible, they arent easy, but we are in college.
He plays horrible screamo/heavy metal music at the beginning of every class, and tries to pretend like he actually listens to it outside of class, but if you can get past that it's not too bad. He tries hard to be funny and sometimes he actually is. If you like science or if you just do the work it's not hard at all.
He is not as bad as everyone says. The class averages on the other semester's bio tests are pretty much the same. He is fun and interesting, unlike the other teacher and is easy to understand. Even though his tests are tricky, if you take good notes and study a couple days before, you'll have a B no problem.
The lectures cover pretty simplistic materials, but the tests are more in depth on the material. You can succeed in his class if you are an active note taker, and willing to attend a few HELP! sessions if you have q's.
hard class, but extremely entertaining, really good teacher
Do not take his upper level plant bio class
whoever said he only pretends to listen to his metal music is wrong...my boyfriend sees him at deathmetal concers all the time! He's a great professor, class is based on plants and animals so it usually is as intersting as possible

Very good professor... hilarious. He's into weird death metal stuff, but he also likes reggae! Just make sure to go to class if you plan to do well on the exams!
WIERD GUY! his tests are hard, and he rambles, and drifts away from the subject all the time! if you take the class study everyday
very funny dude, good teacher, hard tests, going to class is key
I loved Craig Martin! he made biology really interesting to learn. You have to go to lectures though. The tests are based only on lecture notes, but he gives you take home quizs everyweek to boost your grade. Every day before class begins, he'll play a song that relates to the lecture that day. Hes awesome!!
Stay away. Dedicated student who did poorly. Not a fun class.
GOOD teacher. GO TO CLASS!
Worst class I have ever taken!!! I dislike craig martin with a passion. He wants you to fail. Definitely try to wait til spring to take this class!!!!!!
He was an amazing professor, I loved going to his class! He made biology much more interesting by relating it to current events and by doing at least one demonstration each day. Go to class and the exams are easy.
He's awesome, fun, cute, and interesting. He's helpful and makes open book quizes to take home. You learn and have fun in his class!
Best teacher ever. The fact that he listen to awesome black and death metal makes him even better. these kids need to be exposed to the best music on earth

Very enjoyable class to attend. You pretty much have to be an idiot to fail the tests. He has so many help sessions and he pretty much gives you the answers to the test by posting old test questions online. He also uses the same quiz questions in the test. He is very nice, and got me so interested in biology that he made me switch my major to ecolo
Great guy and VERY entertaining. You don't want to miss a class because he is SO funny to listen to. The tests are pretty hard, but you have to be able to actually understand how things work, you can't be superficial. I LOVE THIS MAN
FUNNIEST TEACHER I HAVE HAD!!!
he is really funny, and really keeps you entertained throughout lecture. The bad news is you kind of have to go to class because test are over the lectures, however if you miss some he always has help sessions twice a week. He's awesome!

One of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes the material come alive in class, and he truely wants to make sure that everyone understands. He even holds to HELP! sessions per week for people who are having trouble, and will have an extra one on a Sunday if enough people need it. His class is hard, but so is everything that is worth learning!
The tests are way too hard. You have to go to lecture in order to even know what the hell some words mean. He makes up his own tests. He doesn't use the book. He talks way too fast and it is impossible to take accurate notes. Way too hard.
Interesting subject material, but tests are much too difficult. Material for tests come entirely from lectures, which can be hard to follow. Also, material that seems pointless and trivial can show up on tests. Definitely is a lively guy but makes subject so difficult one loses interest.
Great professor, he made science interesting and classes fun. Some think this tests are too hard, he does make them tricky, but as long as you take your time and study the material, you should have no excuse for doing poorly.
Craig is so fun! he makes me laugh all the time in class..which is very important to attend..you will not get a good grade if you do not attend class and try to use the book..HE NEVER USES THE BOOK..holds helps sessions twice a week i highly recommmend them whether your struggling or not
Mr. Martin is a really good teacher, and makes class interesting. His daily tunes are mostly good and his daily demos are pretty cool for the most part...He has help sessions all the time and schedules extra ones at student requests. His tests are somewhat hard, and worded quite ambiguously...this class is only as hard as you make it.
He comes off as a nice guy, and his class seems interesting, but his tests are ridiculous and freakin hard!! Watch out for this class!!!!
Great class, learned alot. Tests can be hard, but with some studying you can do fine.
Class material and quizzes are easy enough, but the tests can be hard if you don't study. He is a really nice and funny guy though.
He is soo funny and really knows what he's talking about. It's very easy to learn material if you attend lecture (highly recommended) but his tests are very very difficult. He has such great interest in all of the material that it makes it really easy to learn it yourself! A lot of studying needed.
One of the most entertaining classes. You must attend lecture to be able to answer quiz questions. Tests are difficult but the only quiz questions make them easier. He's very funny and it's a very entertaining lecture compared to other classes.
Really good at making the subject and lectures interesting!
Awesome professor. Makes the lectures interesting, unlike some big classes where it's hard to stay awake. Tests come almost exclusively from the lectures, I never used the book.
Craig is an excellent professor, has great sense of humor, and is extremely helpful. Class was actually fun, which is unusual for big lectures. I would recommend taking his class, given the opportunity.
He will definitely keep you awake. I love his sudden burts of energy. His tests are moderate. As long as you go to class and do the quizzes and practice quizzes you should be fine. I would recommend him over the others.
He makes every lecture really exciting. This man loves this subject and you can tell i wish i could have him again for another class
I thought that the tests were pretty hard. The class itself seemed to be pretty interesting just study.
He's so funny and a good professor because he teaches well and still makes you WANT to come to class :)
LOVE HIM!!!
Best science class I've ever had.
I absolutely loved this class! He only taught for about a quarter, though; he had a stroke. Everyone was super bummed when we got our long-term sub. He was enthusiastic and humerus. He made the class fun and was always willing to answer questions. ILU CRAIG MARTIN.
Woe that Craig Martin is teaching no longer. He was, by far, one of the most interesting professors I've ever studied under. I encourage any future Jayhawk to take this class, just hearing his lectures gives reason to go to class every lesson. God Bless Craig Martin!!!
Awesome teacher. Lectures alone are interesting enough to make you go to class. Added with his love for the subject made it worth while. Tests were a bit difficult but he was very helpful in explaining anything you needed to go over. I wish he could have finished the semester. GO CRAIG MARTIN! and dont worry "ill be back" he told me. Take his class
Dr. Martin is a wonderful teacher. His lectures are more like a performance than just somebody getting up and blabbing on and on. He will keep you interested in Biology. Make sure you study for the tests...they are HARD!!
Freshman say it's hard but it's not. It's not like high school where the notes are directly given to you. You have to listen to what he says (which he will go over many times) and understand the concept. Take good notes and study them and the tests are easy. VERY EASY.
my favorite teacher EVER!!!! martin is AWESOME. he is seriously one of the funniest guys ever. he makes biology fun, and keeps you entertained. everything he says---write it down! his tests are sort of tricky, but if you take good notes and memorize everything you wrote down you'll be fine. he also has study session before the tests so go to those!
awesome teacher hope he comes back
REALLY FUNNY AND REALLY NICE! what a cute old man!! write down everything he says in class and you'll be fine on the exams!
I HATE science but I LOVED his class!!!! His tests are kind of hard, even though I felt like I learned a lot in the class. I always looked forward to his class. He's funny and entertaining. It's hard to keep 1000 people's attention but he does it with ease. If you have to take a natural science w/ lab, take this one!but he only teaches it in the fall
Does not make accomidations for disabled students. Was unwilling to get a notetaker or seperate testing facilities. Has an im better than you attitude.
He is great. He is my top role model for approaching life.
very good teacher. Kept things interesting.
makes the class really fun and makes you want to go to class
he's really funny! i've even had a friend from another school to sit in class with me just so he could see what it was like!
Really funny. His test are extremely hard though. Never have a left one of his tests feeling good about it even after 5+ hours of studying.
I only took this class because I had to and figured I wouldn't understand one bit of it but Craig really teaches it well. He actually makes you want to class, everytime I go I learn something new and fascinating. He always explains things so you are able to understand them and brings demos to class to show you what he means.
He really doesn't help and is actually pretty rude. I had a conflict with the exam pertaining to a rehearsal for the University and he said it,"was not a good enough excuse." I went on to tell him I did not want to get away with not taking it, I would even take it earlier. He then told me that I just needed to take it with the rest of the class.
Professor Martin is hilarious. His class is a lot of fun as long as you can learn to follow his notes. The tests are kind of tricky, but just use his old exam questions to practice for them and go to the review sessions.
I really enjoyed him. Very funny, entertaining and random. Going to class is important you are tested over lecture notes so take good notes.
Craig Martin is so really funny to listen to but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE!!! No matter how hard I study I cannot even get a B. It's not worth your time.
Professor Martin is one of my top 2 favorite teachers since I've been at KU. He has a passion for what he teaches and makes it so interesting. I actually enjoy attending his lectures. Although his tests are slightly tricky he is a great great great teacher. Would definitely take a class with him again if I could.
Sometimes it feels like he doesn't realize he's teaching a non-majors class. First 2 units were pretty difficult material. Tests are hard if you don't attend class, so go if you don't want to fail. Take good notes and you'll be fine. Very funny and entertaining in-class. Not THAT hard but definitely not an easy-A class.
Professor Martin is one of the best teachers at KU. I was not very interested in biology before taking his class but you can see that he really cares about teaching the class and he puts a lot of thought into his lectures. Even though it's not the easiest class it is worth taking just to have this great professor!
I like Craig Martin as a person, he's a great guy who loves what he teaches. However, his teaching is awful. He was previously on probation for having an entire 1000 person class fail--and for good reason. His tests are extremely difficult--no matter how smart you are or how much you study--and he is very disorganized in lecture. Not an easy A or B
He's a funny guy, but that's all he's got going for him. His tests are extremely difficult, even with hours of studying. His lectures aren't clear, he doesn't use the book well, and his HELP! sessions only make you more confused. Do NOT take this class if you want an easy A!
funny but SOOOO hard, this is the only class i've ever gotten a C in.
I really enjoyed this class. It's not too hard if you really understand the material, you can't just memorize it the night before. He also has help sessions in which he moves through the material slower. That being said, this teacher is off his rocker.
Professor Martin is very interesting and funny during class, most of the class material is understandable, go to class and he posts previous tests on Blackboard, these are very useful for tests, some of the tests were harder than they needed to be though. Overall it was easy.
He was funny and always kept my attention. It you attend class and keep up on your notes than you will be fine! Even though it is a large class he is concerned about his students success. He always returned my emails
He is hillarious and a wonderful teacher. Go to class and write down everything he says, then put it all on flash cards and memorize it. You'll ace it. (He gives lovely curves usually, but he surprised everyone with no curve on the final, so don't count on it then.) I recommend taking this class.
HILARIOUS man! Lecture was always so interesting and entertaining. However, his tests are impossible. The way he makes them makes it so hard for people to get an A. Take from a different professor if you can...or else you will struggle the entire semester
The bro knows what he is talking about. His class can be hard but if you do a few things you should be fine. Attend all classes (which might be difficult because attendance is not mandatory and it's a 1000 person lecture), write down AS MUCH AS YOU CAN during lecture, and take the weekly quizzes seriously. His class is hard but not impossible.
Very difficult class. if you don't study, expect to fail. if you do study, can can still expect to fail.
The best professor I've ever had! Hilarious and fun..although you could be easily offended. IF you go to all the classes and write down as much as possible you can get an A. Just study the notes rigorously and go to the help sessions. It's just memorization and comprehensibility.
Really funny and has great little demos...you think they're just for fun, but seriously write down everything he says because it WILL appear on the test. He purposefully words test questions weird to try to trick you so you really really have to study your notes. I got an A by attending all classes, writing good notes, and studying hard. Good luck!
Hardest tests I have ever had in my life by far. The average was around 65 for his half of the course. Dominate the first half with debour or else you will be screwed in the end
3.9 gpa student...These are the hardest tests I have EVER taken in my entire schooling career. Be prepared to get your ass brutally kicked, even after 10+ hours of studying for a test well in advance. If you're a science person you might have an easier time? good luck...
His tests are way to hard for a basic biology class. I feel like i understand what we are talking about when I study, but when I get the test his questions are so off the wall and confusing I have no idea what he is asking.
The tests in this class are impossible to pass. No matter how hard you try you are going to end up disappointed. This guy needs to realize that were not all going to be biology majors.
Amusing at first, but that amusement can start to wear off as the class goes on. Ridiculously difficult tests, so be prepared to study. Attendance isn't mandatory, but missing a class period is not recommended since 85% of your grade is based on lectures.
This class lecture is great. The professor is funny and engaging BUT his tests are VERY HARD. The way he administers the testing questions is like the course is for a BIO Major not a requirement. Way too hard.. Attendance is not necessary but he tests solely off of his thoughts on the "application" of lecture notes. Tests are at night.. and a pain.
He's entertaining. We get it, but that doesn't help a student learn or succeed when the lecture materials and the test questions are two totally separate ideas. I studied, went to the help sessions and went to all the classes and yet I still failed the test after realizing that the test had nothing to do with my notes from class.
He's hysterical and engaging but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE to pass. DO NOT take this class if you want an easy A, B, C or D. In my opinion, people will fail. He doesn't use the book at all. His tests are based off of what he thinks in his mind, that's it. It's NOT even Biology in general that he's teaching, it's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
if you're looking for an easy biology class don't take it with this professor. his test are too hard to pass. when i asked him for an idea of what my grade was since he doesn't use black board he told me it was all layed out in the syllabus, not what i call heplfull.
Cool crazy guy but his tests SUCK!!! you never need the book so dont buy it and he does give a cure after every test
As everybody said it is all about his tests... No help at all, he says the test covers "what is in class." Not helpful at all... Help sessions are worthless, he doesn't prepare you for the test whatsoever. Great guy, funny, passionate... Just not a good teacher.
He is a hilarious guy and loves teaching this class. His tests are hard, but only if you do not study. He also offers help sessions which are very helpful. If you take good notes and attend all lectures you will do just fine.
Great guy, some of his jokes are pretty funny, but when it comes to his test, good luck. He says they are over what he covers in class, but for the most part it's just whatever he feels like throwing on it to be honest. Can not stay on topic to save his life. Horrible teacher, DO NOT TAKE A COURSE FROM HIM.
Coming from a 3.8 GPA student, Craig Martin is a HORRIBLE TEACHER. His methods are ridiculous for a 100 level requirement class (hellooo most of us aren't bio majors!). The tests are impossible, he is extremely disorganized, and his HELP sessions useless. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! For real, you'll regret it.
Tests are impossible. Test averages were usually in the 60s, sometimes 70s, so he curved the tests up 5-15% per test. Nice gesture, but that's a reflection of poor teaching. Don't expect this class to be an easy A. It was a moderately difficult B. Not my idea of a fun or fair class.
Absolutely horrible teacher. If you're a non-bio major, look forward to one of the most difficult gen ed courses you could possibly take. Coming from a 3.75 student, his test are IMPOSSIBLE. They are not necessarily difficult in material, its just that the questions are pulled out of absolutely nowhere.
Love the guy, but his tests are impossible. I printed every "old exam questions" he sent after each lecture before the final and studied them and the notes constantly well before the test, and I got a high F. I found multiple errors in his notes where he either contradicted himself or the book. Beware of this class!
Don't read into all these poor reviews. The class can be hard if you don't try hard or don't study the right stuff. Exams are difficult, but his lectures are very fun and enjoyable. Just put in effort and ask questions during help sessions. Don;t buy the book. You do not need it. At all.
Martin is a very interesting teacher but is tests are so hard. The highest grade I got on a test was a low "C". I have to retake this course-but not from him! If you really like biology and think you can answer his tricky questions then go ahead. He provides good materials but it's not that much of a help. Take it in the spring if you can!
Martin is very entertaining but his lectures aren't as helpful as you would think. Even studying doesn't help for his tests. He's very smart, but he needs to not teach at KU anymore.
This was my absolute favorite teacher at KU. He is extremely entertaining, intelligent and helpful. The tests are difficult, but if you study the notes you won't have any trouble. 90% of the time he curves the tests by 10% anyway. I highly recommend not buying the book. Also, attending his help sessions are worth the time and effort.

I have never had more trouble paying attention in a class he was honestly the most annoying person I have ever encountered in my life. He also has no idea how to teach, I loved science before I took his class, he ruined it for me.
Craig was funny and engaging. The tests are more difficult than you would expect. The way he words questions and answers on his tests can trick you but he almost always significantly curves the tests. Attend the help sessions. Always do the quizes he sends out. Don't bother buying a textbook. Just memorize the answers to the text quiz questions.
this professor was not helpful or easy to understand. i don't think that he cared about what was best for the students.
I have no interest in science whatsoever, but Craig really made the class interesting and engaging. People who give him bad reviews were probably the ones on facebook during the lectures. It is very necessary to write down most things he says during lectures, but as long as you really care, you'll do fine. Go to the help sessions!!!!
Going to class is a MUST. Write down everything the man says. He's funny and interesting. Sit as close as possible, just so you dont get distracted. His tests are very hard, but if you apply yourself and study, you can get an A with the curve!
I really enjoyed this class. It is crucial that you take notes of everything he lectures on and that you don't miss class. Studying previous test questions and your notes before the test will help you be successful.
This class is hard, if you're a non major do NOT take it. If you're a science major, definitely take his class. Every thing you learn in this class WILL make any other science classes easier. Tests are strictly over lecture only, write down EVERYTHING, carefully read test questions and THINK of all possibilities. Super nice guy, super fun class.
Great guy and good teacher, keeps everything entertaining and engaging. Tests are not for the weak. Going over his old exams are as necessary as attending lecture. Always a curve on tests because his classes often struggle with his essay style exams. Go to class and listen to this wise mofo!
Professor Martin definitely makes class interesting and entertaining but I thought his class was extremely difficult! His grading scale has changed and he no longer gives quizzes once a week. I went to his test reviews but they weren't helpful either. Great guy but awful teacher!
Horrible teacher tests were impossible. Do well in de boers half or you are screwed
Tests are literally impossible. I know so many people who failed this class or dropped it. However I failed every test and somehow pulled a C.
Entertaining in class. Tests suck.
He is a really entertaining guy, but his class is extremely difficult for an entry-level, non-degree seeking course. Even when you take good notes and attend lecture, it's impossible to know what he'll ask on exams. I don't know anyone who has received higher than a "C" (before the curve).
Very entertaining. But too hard for an entry-level course. The class average on our exams was usually only 60%. 91% of your grade is based on lecture, 9% is from the book. He does have help sessions at least twice a week to answer questions though.
If you go to lecture (which is always very entertaining) and go to the help sessions as much as you can, I find it possible to get an A or B. He's a nice guy and knows how to keep a large class interested! The best advice is to write/type the majority of what he says in class and study that hard.
Hopefully the worst teacher I'll ever have during college.
He is NOT a hard professor. Everyone thinks it is super hard, but as long as you write EVERYTHING down and reread your notes before the test you should have no problem. He gives you old exam questions which are extremely helpful. The lowest test grade I got was a 92%, if you study well you will have no problem. Plus he is a show to see!
Probably the worst teacher i've ever had. Don't expect to do well on tests, considering they are impossible. Yeah he is entertaining, but in the lecture he emphasizes things not even on the test, and breezes over the important things. Ended up withdrawing from the class because i failed every test.
He is a very interesting man, he makes biology somewhat entertaining with his antics. BUT his test are extremely hard, they are supposedly over things he "lectured" about...yea not so much! There is no homework, no quizzes, so if you don't do well on the 5 exams he gives then you won't do well in the class. I dropped the course.
If you value your GPA, DONT take this class. I loved Biology in high school & was good at it, but his class is impossible. Your grade is 91% based on 5 completely confusing exams. The book is hardly worth buying. He only lectures, and tries to be funny. I went to class, took notes, & paid attention, but still was lucky to barley pass a test.
Professor is great, cares enough about students to have multiple help sessions all through the week but class is too large for effective learning. The tests are extremely difficult unless you REALLY understand the material. I attended all lectures, took massive notes and will be lucky to get a C in this class. GET A TUTOR to do well with this guy!
A helpful teacher, provides plenty of help sessions outside of lecture for students. They really do help you. He knows all about the material. However his lecture jumps around on topics, and goes into far too much detail for a non-major class. I study no later than a full week for each test, and got no higher than a 90 on any test with his curve.
One of the best professors at KU. Plays death metal before each lecture. A total badass in his brilliance and the fact that he can keep biology interesting.
Nice and funny guy, but his tests are very difficult. He jumps all over the place with his lecture, and his test questions are very tricky. I wish I would have taken this class in the spring, it would have been way easier.
Has a great personality, but is a terrible teacher in my opinion. His lectures jump all over the place and his tests are very confusing. Avoid taking this class if you value your GPA and money.
Craig is a great teacher! GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY. test are based 90% on lecture. On his test he forces you to apply your learning. Its important to understand the concepts fully. As long as you go to class, take good notes, study and understand the material you should be fine. You get out what you put in.
All tests are based upon class lectures, so going to class is a necessity to pass. There are a few questions from the text but the points are insignificant. Take good notes and study a couple hours before the test and its pretty easy. He also curves every test and your final grade, so that helps a ton.
By far the worst teacher I've had at KU. I took AP Bio in high school, so you would think an intro Bio course would be easier. Nope. He was very entertaining, and a good guy, but he doesn't know how to test students. Lecture material was very simple, then on tests the questions were so complex, to the level of an Advanced bio class. Do not take.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Tests are awful and his teaching style is worse. He is all over the place and nothing makes sense or is straight forward. Not willing to work with students either. Worst professor at KU!
The bottom line is his half of the course is difficult if you aren't interested in plants. But he will adequately prepare you for any plant physiology you will see on the MCAT or other entrance exams. His lectures are entertaining. Make sure you take good notes and figure out the trends he emphasizes. Yes, his tests are challenging, but fair.
A very fun and interesting professor! He is hilarious, which makes his half of the course much easier to bear if you're really not that interested in plants. His tests are very difficult, but you can do well on them by doing all of the practice problems he gives you and taking very good notes. No textbook used, so go to lecture!!
This class is IMPOSSIBLE worst idea ever for freshmen especially, he seems interesting until the first test rolls around and none of that info is on the test. Some people exceeded but I have no idea how. Wish someone would have warned me before I took this.
Absolutely HATE this professor... the material that he goes over in lecture seem basic, but the exams are IMPOSSIBLE.
He's so entertaining, but that doesn't make up for how awfully hard his tests are. You have to go to lecture if you even want to pull off a D in the class because EVERYTHING is from lecture. There's no textbook. And honestly, if you don't have to take this class, [Bio 100] don't. Good Luck.
Don't ever miss a class or you will not pass the test. Everything is based on lecture and I would record the class because it is hard to catch everything he says. He is very random in lectures and he uses no power points, no book, and does not use blackboard. If you have a chance to take this class in the summer or with a different professor, Do!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! We didnt even use a book, so dont buy it. Go to every lecture and write down EVERY word he says if you want to get at least a D on the test. The test usually focuses on things he mentions least in class. If you dont have to take this class, dont.
Although many may disagree, this class is not that difficult. If you go to class everyday and take excellent notes, you will pass. Just because a teacher actually questions your knowledge on the topic doesn't make him a horrible teacher. He offers two HELP sessions a week, which are beneficial to those that go.
Awful teacher, puts the questions on the test that has two right answers, you have to choose the more right one, if you want to do well in the class you better be good at writing down every word he says otherwise you will not do very well, on the plus side, usually gives out 10% extra cred. just because everyones scores are so low, dont buy a book
This is by far the worst professor I've had here at KU. The lectures are totally inconsistent with the test questions. There's no book, no study guides, and no blackboard page. This guy is a lunatic and should have received a severance package a long time ago. I expected higher standards from this University.
His lecture is entertaining but he's test are hard.He does curve the test and then the overall class grade so he doesn't want anyone to fail his class. He has Help! session that are helpfully at times.Just go to class and take notes! He doesn't want you to buy a book because of the pricing. He is overall a great guy and easy to come to with questions.
His tests are entirely too hard and you spend every day praying for a giant curve. I truly think he is a good person, his lectures are entertaining, but his test are ridiculous and it's unbelievably hard for an intro to bio for non majors. I'd recommend finding a different prof.
He is a horrible teacher, he is random and doesn't have the attention span to teach an entire class and yes his class can be entertaining but he is very rude and not everyone thinks its funny. A lot of the things he says and does can be pretty offensive. His test are entirely way to hard for and intro class especially for non-majors. Dont take this
This class is extremely hard. Tests are on Monday nights. The only grades you get in the class are the tests. He does curve each test at least 5 points, sometimes up to 20pt but that is usually what is needed to be passing. He is not easily approachable and is rude in class. He is offensive and skips around to 10 different topics in one lecture
No way in the world that this is an intro class. If you do not like plants, do not take this class. His tests compared to the lectures do not match up at all. I would not suggest this class to anybody, and I would suggest taking it during the summer or second semester.
He is terrible; KU should be embarrassed to even have him associated with the school. His lectures are completely random and half the time I don’t think even he knows what he is talking about. He is extremely rude in class because he thinks it’s funny, and his tests are way too hard especially for non-majors. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HIM!!
This class was awesome, and I don't know why everyone is complaining it was so hard. Plays metal before each lecture, and gives T-shirts for good answers to challenge questions that say "I kicked professor Martin's Ass". Type notes of EVERY point he makes in class, and read them before tests, and no problem. Generally curves 10+ points per test.
I liked the class. A lot of people complain about it, but he offers HELP Sessions multiple times a week. They are very useful, and I would say improve my test scores 10/15 pts every time, but there are usually less than 20 people there in a class of 500+. If you're willing to work, the class is good. It's entertaining at the very least. I liked it.
Craig Martin is hilarious as a person and a professor, but his tests are ridiculously difficult.
Craig is an amazing professor! If you go to lecture and know how to take notes from a lecture, know how to study you will do fine. His tests are hard, but he offers study sessions where he will answer any questions you have 3 or more times a week.
He is an amazing professor. You really learn a lot from his course. Many think it's hard but if you attend the lectures and take good notes and study you will do just fine. Recording the lectures helps a lot also. He is a loud crazy old guy but he loves what he does in the field of Biology and he knows what he is talking about
Write down everything. Great professor, very interesting class, incredibly difficult tests. Four tests determine your grade, and they are not easy.
Very interesting and engaging professor. Can be super scatter brained with lecture and they can jump all over the place. He knows his stuff, and makes class interesting. Tests completely based on lecture, no textbook. 5 tests determine grade and there is no comprehensive final. (Thank God) He also curves tests ridiculously.
Terrible. You can't keep track of his lecture at all it is so scattered
You need to write every thing he says. Very hard exams. If you want to take the class you need to have a recorder, believe me it will help you a lot.
Craig was a great teacher! People who complain didn't do anything during class (and prolly didn't show up either) To be successful in this class you need to take notes and attend class! If you're struggling, he'll help you understand a concept. Plus he curves about 10 points each test. Take good notes and you'll be fine
Best teacher I've had so far by far! Was scared to take him per other reviews but was happily wrong. You must go to the class to do well at all. It is only verbal lecture notes. If you go to class, take good notes n study the night before you will do great! I also recorded lectures to listen to which helped. You'll learn a lot and have fun!
He's a very unique professor and is very interesting, just takes some getting used to. If you go to class and take good notes you shouldn't get a bad grade. Tests aren't that hard, just pay attention and study your notes.
Took physiology from him once upon a time. Liked the class, but a textbook would have been helpful.
The class is fun and engaging. The tests are hard only if you don't go to class and don't study. It is a biology course what else do you expect. Study and the tests are not hard because you should have wrote down everything that will be on the test. Only non-science majors would think this class is hard.
DO NOT take this class if you aren't good at science. There are 5 test and they are all multiple choice but the questions aren't clear at all. Everyone I knew struggled in this class and he always had to curve them because the class average was low.
I really enjoyed this class. You must go to class as there is no book used. If you take good notes and go to class you will do well. Recording lectures also was very helpful in studying. He is a really fun and passionate teacher who made biology very interesting and cool. One of the best teachers I've have thus far at KU.
Dr.Martin is entertaining at times. He definitely knows what he is talking about. However, some of the questions on his tests can be tough since they're based on material he may only mention just once. Really, if you want to pass this class, STUDY, GO TO THE HELP SESSIONS, AND GO TO CLASS. It is the ONLY way that you are sure to pass!
Do not take this class, I had close to a 4.0 GPA, and his tests were very difficult. They are the only source for the grade.
Just awful imature and scattered lectures you never know what you're supposed to write down for his notes. Theres no text book, no power point slides. just him, his awful jokes, his random unstructured AS HELL lectures, and the tests determine your entire grade. which are NOT easy
if you know how to take good notes, you will do fine in the exam
He is a very poor professor, and this lectures are completely unorganized. He gives us no study guide, no notes, and no idea about what to write down. He only gives out tests, and they are extremely complicated. I attended every day, asked for a note taker, studied hard, yet I barely passed. Avoid at all costs.
He's an exceptionally nice guy and he strives to make the material as interesting and as relatable as possible. You definitely need to take notes on everything he says, as literally anything could pop up on the exam. If you take good notes, study, and thoughly understand the material, you'll do fine. If you don't, you'll do poorly.
Funny dude, tests are hard but he curves and give bonus points. Go to class every day and take notes. I recommend a laptop, he talks fast and jumps around a bit. If you can, go to HELP sessions! They are super helpful, especially if you learn better in traditional classrooms. This class is not really that hard, you just have to put effort in.
He's terrible. There's no book. The class starts with 1000 kids then drops to 500 because most fail.
Crazy Craig DOES know what he's talking about. However, he does jump around a lot. Since there is no text book, it makes it slightly hard to keep up with. I recorded his lectures which helped a lot. Go to his help sessions. There are 3 a week and they are very very helpful if you're confused or just didn't pay attention in lecture.
Craig is a funny guy. Hes definitely entertaining to say the least. Record lectures and take strong notes b/c he will test you about the little things. He curves the tests quite a bit, but they are hard and you MUST STUDY. If you struggle talk to him because he is helpful one on one. I worked hard in this class and still wasnt happy about my grade.
To be perfectly honest I hated biology, I barely passed in high school & it was required for my major to take Bio100. I was told to avoid this class at all costs. I am so glad I didn't. This class is not easy, you must put in effort. I actually enjoy coming to class everyday. I've learned so much & now enjoy biology. Hands down favorite professor.
nice guy!
Sadly this semester is nearly over!!
Tough class!! I ended up having to drop it. He doesn't use blackboard or a textbook and he handwrites his notes. The only grades are the five exams, based on his notes. He does meet up multiple times a week for help sessions, though. You can pass but you MUST STUDY. He's a really nice, funny guy - wish I didn't have so much trouble in the course.
This was an awful class. No textbook. His lectures jump around from topic to topic, I paid for tutoring, I went to help sessions, I even talked to him during his office hours and still ended up with a D in the course. Worst class I've ever taken. He's a good guy, he means well but his exams are ridiculously hard. AVOID THIS CLASS.
Good teacher and he means well, he only teaches first semester but avoid him at all costs. Based of 4 exams that are extremely hard, went to help sessions and office hours and a tutor and didn't do well. You will like him if you get a good grade, take biology a different semester if possible!!!!
I was told that this was the hardest class at KU. After the first test, I almost dropped because I did so horrible. I figured out a study technique and used the resources that he provided, and studied my butt off. Ended up getting an a, didn't mind going to lecture, and actually learned a lot. If you can study, you'll be fine!!!
he is a nice guy who is knowledgeable about biology, but his class jumps around and he goes very fast. his tests are impossible. he had to curve each one almost 15 points because everyone did so bad. don't listen to the person who got an A, that is rare. avoid him at all costs. my friends are in it now with a diff. professor and its fine
One of my favorite classes so far. I ended up w/ over 100%- its easy but you HAVE to go to class, listen really well, and take great notes. he loves to pick out very specific things and expect you to remember them. Use all the time he gives on the test and read the questions/answers carefully to get an A. no homework, no textbook, and hes hilarious
I loved biology with Craig Martin. His guidelines for the course were clear. He only tests on the notes you take in class so if you go to class, you will get an A no problem. Also, he made class interesting and strange- which I always loved. I mean, how many old guys do you know that listen to black metal music?
Prof. Martin is a great guy. He's nice and funny and very animated in his teaching of the material. His tests are damn-near impossible, so study hard or fail!
Not much too say besides don't listen to these other people who say he is nice.
Prof. Martin is a very difficult professor. His lectures provide no visual aid, there is no textbook, and Martin is very hard to follow in the way he lectures. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being hardest, his tests are definitely an 8 or above, and all tests are given at night, in contrast to the lecture. Very difficult for an intro level course.
I knew going into the class that he was going t o be a difficult teacher. I worked extremely hard and I did mange to get an A in freshman biology. You have to go to class and being a good test taker does not hurt. I did learn a lot from him.
terrible, not very helpful, avoid class at all costs. wait to take this class when he doesn't teach it next semester. he does add points to every test, only because 70% of the class always fails his tests, because he doesn't teach very well.
He truly wants you to pass, but make sure you studh every day not last minute. I recommend recording his lectures, it helps so much!
I walk into the first lecture and this old bag is playing death metal to start the semester. If Craig Martin is a reflection of how all professors at KU are then this college is header for the toilet.
Dr. Martin is the worst professor I've ever had at KU. He may seem enthusiastic and nice when lecturing but when you go talk to him he's very rude and unhelpful. His class is unorganized and his tests are really hard. I ended up with a B in the class only because I did well on the first half of the semester with Dr. deBoer's section.
I had Professor Martin a few semesters ago. His class was great - no homework or textbook, just lecture. People criticize him because they didn't show up and study, but his class was a breeze if you did. Very smart and funny.
This class was great - no homework, text book, or busy work. Exams determined the entire grade, so attendance was vital. If you study thoroughly before his exams, you'll do very well. I'm a history and politics major, but I loved Professor Martin's class.
By far the best professor I've had at KU (I'm a senior now). He has so much energy and enthusiasm for someone his age, it's awesome. You can tell he loves teaching and he's very interested in biology. Great intro class because it prepares you for the next couple years of college. Show up to class, pay attention, and study, you'll get an A or B.
Craig Martin is such a character and is one of the most caring and curious professors at KU. This man has seen it all, and has been working with plants for over 50 years I think. He has a different lecturing method, a bit old school, but you won't learn the information he teaches you any where else at ku! Great guy
The greatest prof. at KU undergrad, did research with him for a year and a half, very conceptual. need to understand, not memorize. god bless Dr. Martin. i am now an attending medical Dr.
One of the best instructors I have ever had. The course makes you think, opens your eyes and the stomata jokes are classic.
