Prof Nichols is very nice. The class is a lot of reading. Reading Journals are due twice a semester (10% each). 5 tests (including final) each test is 10% and the final is 20%. Two 2-3 page papers (10% each). It's not hard to do well if you do the work.
Nichols is a very nice guy. The material is a little confusing and class is dull, but tests are fine if you study and usually scaled 10 points!!! 40% 4 tests, 20% 2 journals, 20% 2 2-3 page papers and 20% final. Journals are automatic 100 if you do them. This guy is the best PHL teacher you will find. Nice guy and really helps students out!
Nichols' class is super easy, but him and his class are pretty damn boring. I have no idea how I made it through, I never had any idea what was going on, but the assignments were just so damn easy. I got an A!
Prof. Nichols' lectures were sometimes boring but always insightful and enlightening. Philosophy/religion can be a dull topic, but he tries his best to emphasize conceptual understanding. Quizzes every week or so and sometimes unannounced. Class consisted of 3 Reading Journals, 1 Position Paper, 1 Oral Presentation, & 3 Exams. He's a nice guy.
He covers the difficult to comprehend material of Eastern religions and philosophy very well. His pop quizzes are relatively easy if you do the reading and listen to his lectures (which can be hard at times because he's boring and uncharismatic). He is a nice and helpful professor. Definately recommended if you are interested in the subject matter.
Easy, easy class. I personally made the mistake of not going because I wont lie it is quite boring. He gives like 12-14 quiz with 5 ques each time all multiple choice n u dont have to read the texts to ace them. Plus, he only keeps 10 quiz grades. Only mistake u can make is not going n i mean jus to take the tests cus u can sleep after that.
Sometimes boring but every so often an extremely enlightening and subliminal lecture; nice and understanding guy, responds well to questions; lots of reading but enjoyable if you're interested; lots of quizzes but not hard if you read; tests include quiz questions, all multiple choice; besides that, there's a paper and presentation.
very easy class! he is a really nice professor. Easy quizzes, and the questions on the exams are all questions from the quizzes. You have to do one presentation but its not a big deal.
BORING! you have a quiz once every week...and he doesn't even give you the quizzes back so you have nothing to study off of for the tests...thats the stupidest thing a professor has ever done...he says that if he gave them back then we would not really learn anything we would just memorize the answers...stupid
Pretty Broing,Attendance is not mandatory, but if you dont go you will only be hurting yourself. He give alot of quizzes on the reading . You have to read to do wellin this class. He drops your worst quiz grade. The quizzes, Mid-term, and Final are hard if you dont study. In the end there is a Presentation and a term paper. He is a really nice guy!
Had RLS131 and PHL212. By far the best professor I have had at URI. Really enjoys philosophy and class discussions. Will spell everything out for you if you show up to class. If you have no interest in philosophy or religion you will be bored the entire semester. If you can read the small texts assigned it's an easy class that offers much insight.
He is an extremely smart and nice guy. Very helpful and extremely fair with grades. Go to class. If you read, the quizzes will boost your grades tremendously. He drops the lowest three and the journals are so easy and boost our grade, as well.
Had for 103 and 212. Its best to show up for class but you can def miss 1-2. No big books just a few small ones, easy reads. If you don't understand the reading its ok cuz he explains it all the next class. Test are exact copies of the quiz's. If you go to class and try you'll pass. Sugg: write donw quiz q's and A's when correcting and study them.
brilliant man and pretty nice. class is extremely boring and theres a lot of work but hes fair with grading and everything is weighed similarly. if u pay atttention and take notes down from the quizzes you should do well.
Interesting clas and a new take on ethics. MacIntyre is hard to understand but in the end you will get what he is saying. Exams are all true and false and multiple choice but that doesn't make them easy. Keep the notes from everyone presentations to study for the exams, you be sorry if you don't. Could have used more discussions in an ethics class.
My major being pharmacy I thought I was going to hate this class and when I found out how many books we had to read I thought for sure my GPA was going to suffer. But Professor Nichols is really good, he explains everything crystal clear and if you do the work and listen in class, you'll get an A.
Tought to sit through, good thing he doesnt take attendance. Reading journals are easy, use filler and lots of quotes and it is an easy A. Write down quiz q's, it is most of the exams and tests. Nice GPA booster. Smart guy and you will learn.
Really boring class; I fell asleep every time I went, and I skipped a lot. Didn't read the books, but did fine with the journals and quizzes - sparknotes works well. Easy class to pass - got 86+ on all the journals and I didn't even read the books or pay attention in the class. Quizzes are T-F and MC, so really easy.
My entire class find his teaching boring, I personally look at the clock on the wall to see if it is time to go. 4 Reading Journals are given through out semester which require a lot of work. Quizzes weekly to see if you read the incomprehensible books, test reflect questions based on the quizzes. It is an ok class
MY FAVORITE CLASS EVER!!!Great teacher, knows what he's talking about, and if you're into this sorta thing, the class is great. If you're not going to care or try, then you're gonna have a hard time. Easy A for me.
kind of boring class but very easy to get through, very accommodating prof and answered any questions. Approachable. tried his best with a difficult subject. Loved debate. Tons of reading/ 4 long papers but doable. Very easy quizzes/exams- I finished the final in 15 minutes.
Really nice guy, you have A LOT of reading and four big papers. Easy grader as long as you read the books the papers are easy. Can sometimes go off topic but overall I enjoyed this teacher. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't understand the readings then go to class because he explains everything you need! Quizzes and tests are easy.
As a pharmacy major I really didn't care about the class too much. Honestly he is an easy grader with the papers and if you take notes on the quizzes you can do very well on the tests because they are the same questions. In closing if you are a pharmacy major or just taking this class for gen ed credit take this class with Dr dave
He is really confusing but its expected because he's teaching philosophy. He doesn't care if you go to class and all the tests are taken from quiz questions so make sure you write all of them down. The only written work is "journals" which he pretty much gives everyone As. Not too bad...passable.
He's a pretty awkward guy and is not the best at telling stories, but he is a very easy grader on the essays and the test questions come straight from the quizes. He is also a very nice and knows his stuff, its definatly not the most exciting class but its pretty easy
Not that hard of a class if you go to his lectures, but he rants A LOT and uses words that he knows he obviously do not know. Gives 3 journal assignments and is an easy grader. All the questions on the tests come from the quizzes. Can be an easy class if you do the work but it's not impossible. Very boring for an 8am tho
As a pharmacy major, this class was AWFUL! I thought that this class was going to be based more on ethics, but instead I found out it focused on philosophy. Lots of reading and quizzes every week. Write down the answers to the quizzes since they will be the questions used on the exams and then the final. Put effort in the class and you will be fine
I'm a pharmacy major and thought I was going to fail this class after the first week BUT it's really an easy A. Exam questions come directly from quizzes so write down the quiz questions! He is such an inspirational man and you will learn a lot from him. The final was the 2 exams stapled together and I finished in 10 minutes. I definately this clas
Professor Nichols is a great teacher. He is very enthusiastic about philosophy, and tries to encourage class discussions. He assigns a lot of reading hw and the journals are time consuming to write, but he grades them very leniently. He gives quizzes once a week, and all the questions on them are recycled on exams, so write them down afterwards.
If you are a philosophy major or really into philosophy, take ethics with him. If you just want an easy A or ethics is required for your major, try to avoid him. He is a great teacher, but the class is a lot of work; there is a lot of mandatory reading and huge reading journals.
Professor Nichols is, in a word, nice. However, his class is a bit of work. You do three long "journal" assignments, but as long as you put effort into them you will receive and "A" on them. There are several quizzes, but they are ridiculously easy as long as you have done the reading and at least sort of paid attention to it. Perfect for phl lover
Pretty much exactly the same deal as his Intro to Philosophy class: lots of reading, a few "journals," and lots of class discussion. However, in this class there is one oral presentation, but it's easy and short and as long as you actually do it he flat-out tells you that he won't give you a poor grade on it.
Professor Nichols is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. His grading policy for the most part is simple. The class requires two lengthy papers (about 10 pages) but they are not strictly graded.
I had Nichols for Ethics. He assigns the most reading out of the Ethics professors, but they can be sparknoted or looked up online. Quiz questions are recycled on tests and his final is literally his two tests plus a few extra questions on the material at the very end. Journals are annoying, but basically A's since he is very lenient on grading.
He is all over the place. Very scatterbrained and confusing. His assignments are random, and vague, and does not relate to PHL. Do not take this class!!!
Professor Nichols is very intelligent, interesting, and a nice guy. Do beware, he does get off subject, but if you try hard/go to office hours you'll be okay.
This is one of the most interesting class I have taken at URI. Craig Nichols is one of the few professors that really know what he is talking about, he really wants us to take away the meaning of philosophy. A must take class.
Prof Nichols is a very intelligent and knowledgeable teacher. All of the work in this class involves reading original works of philosophers such as Aristotle, Kant, Mill, etc. There are unannounced quizzes on the readings pretty much every week. Most of the quiz questions are difficult to understand but are recycled for the test.
Professor Nichols is a really nice guy. However, the assignments, quizzes, and tests involve reading. He assigns about 6 books (if I remember). If you have no intention of reading, then go to class [everyday] because he explains concepts in lectures. All in all, if you hate reading, don't take this class. The tests and quizzes are all recycled.
I recommend this teacher and class if you don't mind reading and are genuinely interested in Philosophy. If you thought your first Philosophy class was easy, and you are looking for a class to breeze though, keep looking. If you show up to class, and keep on top of the reading, you will do fine. His tests are all multiple choice.
The class is fairly straight forward. There is a fair amount of reading. You CANNOT just use spark notes though its a good way to see if you understood the material. Be prepared to spend 30 minutes reading every other night. The lectures are virtually useless however for he simply rambles. Overall interesting stuff.
For any philosophy student tired of the nihilism that has infected all of the current scholars working today, take a class with Nichols and you'll actually get something different. He's actually bold enough to talk about Truth and Goodness. He does ramble and mumble awkwardly sometimes, but he might radically change the way you see the world.
Ehhh, rambles to much. TAKE NOTES. didn't read a thing but still did great! :)
Heres the thing, He is a very nice man and very soft spoken. However, in all my years here, he's the only person who just talks to the class and then gives pop quizzes with multiple choice questions that have 8 options. So basically, he just rambles off in class and you actually have to ask multiple questions and keep up with him to pass the class.
The dude puts effort into his classes and he brings up good thought provoking points about life, however it's incredibly tough to have a discussion based class when nobody contributes. Because of this, he's forced to babble. He encourages people to talk. Chill guy, means well. Books are actually interesting. Simple grader. Relatively easy class.
I found this class really difficult and I go to every class and have read every book.. all 6 of them.. Even though I take notes, read the books, and stay after class I have yet to get higher than a 70 on an exam. Pop quizzes all the time. Only thing saving my grade is the reading journal, mine was 14 pages single spaced. Good luck
If you think this is an easy elective you are wrong. Lots of readings from really confusing dead people matched with equally confusing lecture is not fun. you will most likely have to read the books like two times to understand them, don't even try to sparknote it won't work. An upside is he reuses quiz questions for the test .
Unlike what people said, he doesn't give Pop quizzes. He tries a lot to help. I'm not at all philosophy person so it was kind of stupid for me but if you like it, it's very interesting. I would take class again with him. Great guy!
Craig is a great guy, class really isn't that hard. Don't even have to do the readings just go to most classes. No pop quizzes like people have said, 2 reading journals, 3 exams and a couple quizzes that he tells you about. He really is a nice guy and means well. Tries to just get you to think as a student and as a person. A must take
Great teacher, easy to talk to. Lots of assigned reading, but as long as you actually do it the class isn't too hard.
He will pick one thing and go on for the entire lecture so you don't learn much. Never gives a clear answer when questions are asked and gives assignments that don't really help anything. Tests are tough if you don't read but the books given are hard to understand
If ur csc major and they give u this class, switch u were meant to be in 101. Quizzes are easy if u listen the whole lecture and read the book. There are 4 books. Tests are somewhat hard.
This class was extremely lecture heavy and confusing at times. Showing up in class and taking good notes is really a must when it comes to understanding information in this course.
Cool, nice guy. Class was just very repetitive, so it made it kind of boring. 4 reading books are required, but you can find summaries online.. All about Greek philosophers- plato, socrates, thales, etc. Gets a little confusing but not bad for a gen ed.
This class was good and bad for me. Didnt read the book but did well on quizzes and tests because I attended every class. Make sure you take good notes. He is a nice guy, but during lectures he rambles a lot and dont expect class to end early ever.
Professor Nichols is a very passionate teacher, but sometimes he gets too passionate. He goes on long lectures about the REQUIRED texts, and makes it well-known that he knows all of them and will share every small detail in depth. I mean, that's an amazing quality for a professor, but that's only helpful if philosophy was actually my major.
Always rambles. Never gives you a direct answer. Always asks "why"? Gives pop quizzes..
He will tell you that you need to get all of the books, but you can just use spark notes. As long as you pay attention in class and go to every class you should be okay. He does give pop quizzes and they are usually difficult.
If you struggle keeping up with readings, this class might not be for you. The work is easy, but you need to stay on top and actually read the books assigned to do well. If you have a hard time understanding the text, the professor explains and is very helpful. You can fail his class if you really don't care and not show up to class or read.
Dr. Nichols is awesome!! He is super nice and lectures a lot. He has completely changed the way I see the world in such a good way. He is totally different from any professor I've had. I don't mind his long lectures, and I think everything he says is super cool and interesting. If you just do the readings and try on the work, you will be fine!

Nichols is a great professor. He's incredibly knowledgable and works as thoroughly as possible to communicate his wisdom, and to make you think. He does go on tangents, but what some reviewers have called "rambling" is him fleshing out the subject & giving connecting information. If there was one prof that I wish I took more classes with, it's him.
Professor Nichols is a hidden gem - very kind and funny, definitely holds your attention during lectures. Be sure to get to class early, because he takes attendance right at the beginning. I definitely learned a lot from this class, and felt comfortable expressing my own ideas freely.
This professor created a very negative environment in class. He constantly brought up random topics that had nothing to do with the content at all, and expected us to know every detail, and highly criticized every thing each student did. When we asked once if a lecture was going to be on the exam the following class, he said "it's on life's test."
I LOVED Professor Nichols, I took two of his classes but wish I could've taken more. It's rare that you have a professor who still gets excited over the material that they are teaching, but you can tell that Nichols is super passionate about philosophy. And because of that, I learned A LOT. There's a lot of work, but aren't we at school to learn?
It is rare to find a professor that loves to teach as much as Prof. Nichols. He loves his work, especially when students are engaging. Above all he wants us to learn and get something out of the class. Despite the significant amount of reading he requires, Prof. Nichols is on your side and really wants you to do well!
Class is all discussion but participation isn't forced. Rlly interesting required texts but challenging. Quizzes sometimes, you have to read, and the short answers Qs r ur best friend. Big assignments r reading journals and those suck. overall good/chill prof would take him again and class is interesting. you have to read to do good.
The class.. super easy I never read a single thing. Sparknotes everything I never opened any book I bought... Good for gen ed credit super easy. Craig... super nice guy he lectures to the class and basically explains what you should be reading so no need to read. definitely recommend this guy for any class and also recommend this class if you need.
He is really passionate about his work and is a good professor, but the classes are lecture heavy. Sparknotes works but his quizzes tend to be very subjective and difficult (epically the multiple choice), there have been countless times when questions on the quiz have been unrelated to anything we have discussed in class.
He is a very very nice professor and shows a lot of knowledge about what he teaches. He is a very easy grader but the assignments are very time consuming, so don't wait until the last minute to start them. He encourages participation and loves to hear people's thoughts.
Enjoyable lectures. I do NOT recommend skipping this class or holding off on assignments. Only assignment is a journal filled with entries written based on readings he's assigned. New readings are assigned every class. If you fall behind on this it is very easy to get a poor grade. Did a good job in getting students to interact with the material.
Although readings a can be tough, Professor Nichols goes over everything during lectures to clarify and help you understand. He's always open to questions and exploring other related topics. It's clear he enjoys what he's teaching and is super enthusiastic. Quizzes can be difficult, but he's very flexible with grading and approachable for feedback.
Lectures are long and boring. He talks in circles and gets off on tangents easily. The only assignments during the semester are the reading journals which are time consuming but not difficult. Quizzes are limited on time and are not super easy, but he is not a tough grader. He is super nice and passionate about what he teaches.
Great guy, I took this course only having took PHL 101 and I got a ton out of it. Don't take this class if you are just expecting an "easy elective," though.
The chill guy who obviously knows a lot about the field. Reading Journals for him though is a pain because he doesn't give a lot of instruction on what he wants but grades really hard.
He is very knowledgeable about the topics discussed in class, but it is very lecture heavy. However if you show up to close and write down what he writes on the board, you will get an A. Just show up to class and write notes, and read the books assigned.
Pretty easy class, he has reading journals due every couple of weeks and quizzes every once in a while (the lowest quiz grade gets dropped). A lot of reading. If you're not interested in philosophy it can be difficult to pay attention. But as long as you take notes and try to pay attention you should be fine.
Sweetest guy ever but talks in circles the whole class--took this with zero philosophy background and was a little lost...but honestly just show up take the few notes he writes on the board + look up the book summaries/main messages. He is a lenient grader with essays (i mean do them and you'll get 100) weekly quizzes aren't too bad either.
Took this class thinking it seemed interesting, found out I hate philosophy. Guy talks so much and doesn't ever make a point. Books are boring so unless you like reading I wouldn't suggest it. Overall really easy, he doesn't grade hard but showing up class was painful and attendance matters. He brings up weird politics and right-wing conspiracies
Very nice guy, but very tough grader. Very heavy critiquing.
PHL 341** I'm one of those blokes who hates reading for class, and you have to do a LOT of it for this one. But the reading brought me so much growth and education that I was bewildered. Nichols is quite literally full of the philosophical spirit and I admire him. Take this class if you want to be enlightened to your core.
worst class I have ever invested my time into. Every time you submit an assignment, he will tell you every possible thing you did wrong and give you a 0. Even if it is the best paper, you have ever written it will never be good enough for him. He is bias and very unprofessional. I do not recommend this class whatsoever. Terrible professor.
Awful professor and awful class.
I have never hated anyone in my life. Now I do. He rambles on and on about random things that don't even apply to what we are learning. Very hard grader, I found no peace during this class. NO NOT TAKE!!!
Knows the material very well and I think the class could be very enjoyable if you have a background in philosophy. You have to read but I genuinely think the books he assigns gives you a more sophisticated world view
This guy has extreme opinions and grades based on them. He said many inappropriate things during class. The actual class is pretty easy, but he is insufferable to listen to, and sitting through his rambles was so hard. He also doesn't care if he goes over time and will keep talking after class ends until people eventually just get up and leave.
Did not love this professor. I am not a very philosophically minded person, and he made me realize its not for me. Lots of reading and very easy to fall behind. Structure of the class is fine, class was graded based off of 4 reading journals (10% each), 4 exams (3 regular 10%, 1 final 20%) and attendance (10%). Make sure you understand the authors.
Has a lot of passion, so if geeking out to philosophy is your thing, this is your guy. Not my cup of tea, though. Goes on tangents EVERY CLASS. Loses track of time and goes 5-7 minutes over. I am at the point where I walk out on him when class is supposed to be up. Kinda rude, yeah, but I only have so much time to get to my next class.
so I try to never hate on professors bc they sacrifice a lot but when you dont respect your students' time or priorities its pretty hard to be supportive. routinely goes over the time limit, like we havent gotten out on time once, doesnt make any points ever, is very passive aggressive if he disagrees with you, etc. he also sounds like quagmire lol
Hes a nice guy and is very excited about what he teaches but beware... DO NOT take this class if you want to keep your sanity and want to be on time to the next class. I had a class after this class and I never once got to be there on time. reading journals are easy just do them and youll pass. Must read to pass tests.
Honestly, didn't like him at first, but he grew on me throughout the semester. His lectures are long; he often goes over time by 5-10 minutes. However, they're interesting if you're into philosophy. Sometimes he just talks in a loop, which gets old. There's a lot of reading, which is necessary to do well, but he's pretty forgiving with grading.
I was worried about this professor due to the mixed reviews. Truthfully, he's not for everyone but he always gave motivating and useful feedback... as long as you read the material and listened in lectures- exams were a breeze. He does go on rants and goes overtime but I've learned so much and will take more classes w/ him in the future.
This class gets better when you do the reading and participate. If you don't then it's probably going to seem more boring. If you don't quite understand the readings, he's very helpful and open to questions/discussions, both inside and outside of class! Only gives a few assignments and two tests total, so they're heavily weighted in your grade.
