Dry boring lectures. All the lecture notes are straight out of the book, so there is no point in going to class. I most likely will not take any of his classes again.
he seems like he's new at this. he just needs to tweak out some things in his lectures AND tests.
Thinks he's and english prof, hope you don't have to write any papers. I could teach this class better and I have a 2.3 gpa.
This class sucks... I would never take him again. He thinks he is teaching a 400 level class.
Avoid at all cost
I took his Intro to Politics class and it was no introduction. He knows a lot about the political topic, but seeing as five people dropped, he tests far to critically, I wouldn't want to have him again.
Great class! He's a very structured lecturer and follows his syllabus to the 't'. Read the text, take the online quizzes if available, take good notes in class and you should do well. You have to work to earn an A but its easy if you stay on top of things.
his tests are half hard, half impossible, and they are always multiple choice with 2 essay questions. he is VERY picky about the essay answers' correctness. take notes w/ any examples he gives on subjects. he doesnt test on definitions, but on understanding the topic enough to give examples of it. you HAVE to read the text.
Great teacher! Study, Study, study!
If you do all the readings, you are fine. He emphasizes points in class and they wil be on the test. The questions at the end of chapters are also used quite a bit.
Too hard for an intro class. I don't recommend taking intro to poly - sci with him. If you do all of the reading and take extremely good notes then you should pass. He was very critical on the essay questions on the tests!!!
exams are extremly hard. i thought i did great on an exam but i had failed it!! oh and he gives out no study guides
Knows his stuff!
I would not suggest taking any classes with this teacher. His lectures are so boring and his tests are next to impossible.
I took this class merely to fulfill a requirement, but I ended up enjoying it. Prof. Ortsey is informed and articulate, although his intro class is more involving than most. He says that reading the textbook is a "must," but the online chapter summaries and lecture notes got me an A. The tests can be challenging, though.
Very knowledgeable. Lots of reading required for all his classes. one requisite for his classes is you must love to read.
Ortsey is an acquired taste, much like Russian literature. Getting past Ortsey's idiosyncrasies and his interpersonal skills that atre sorely lacking, he's a pretty nice guy. I have somehow mangaged to form a bond with the guy, but in all honesty, there are times he infuriates me. Over time, however, the good outweighs the bad.
I had two classes with him y103 and y200. He is challenging without taking it overboard. Very good at answering questions and helping students out if your willing to get past his idiosyncrasies. The only negative I have is that he is a little book happy. Other than that a great professor.
Sports & Public Policy is a thoroughly interesting class. The teacher is demandinf, but fair.
Great class for students who love political science. Not recommended for novices. Instructor is open to questions during the lecture. POLS 107 was my third class with this teacher and am registered for a fourth. Excellent instructor.
Extremely challenging course.I do not recommend it to anyone who's never taken a polisci class before. Although the instructor is somewhat intimidating and drives students insane, he is perhaps the best in the department.
Had a hard time with this class. Dr. Ortsey tried to help me, but I just couldn't get it. There should be a prereq for this class.
I would not take this class if you are not a political science major or otherwise interested in the European Union. This class should absolutely have a pre-requisite. Be prepared to work your butt off in this class, and even then it will not be good enough. The professor expects grad student or higher level papers, and grades as such.
This is the absolute hardest 100 level course I have taken. The tests are extremely hard, short answer and essay. If you leave out anything he will lower your score dramatically. I have a 3.7 GPA and have taken numerous Pol. Sci. classes. Boring lectures, more boring reading. Will NEVER take a class with him again.
He grades writing assignments and papers too strictly. The graded papers of all my classmates and myself were smeared in red ink. He is not teaching an English class! His tests are difficult so study hard. I like the material that we are learning but I do not like the man as a person. If only I could have a different teacher, I would enjoy it more.
Being able to do an independent study with Dr. Ortsey was incredible. I got to choose the the overall topic and had input into the design of the course. The workload was closer to graduate level, but it suited me better. I was never bored. This was my fifth class with him and number six begins soon. The best instructor I've ever had.
Hands down my favorite teacher of all time. He can be demanding & nit-picky but the volume of info students learn in a single semester is mind boggling; students get quite a bang for their buck. Wish more time could have been devoted to the scandals half of Scandals & Conspiracies, but overall a rather fun class.
Feedback is virtually nonexistent. Guild lines for papers are unclear. Grades are not returned in a timely manner.
He has good knowledge on the subject matter, but he is not a good professor. He is very unclear in what he expects on the writing assignments or the tests. He does not give study guides, so good luck on his exams. He just returned grades to us that were due in September. Awful.
Not a good professor. Very informative on the subject but tests are impossible to pass, along with all writing assignments. Do not take this class unless you want to receive a D or C at best. He takes forever to respond to emails and to give back assignments. Unless he is a Poly Sci major, do not take. No study guide makes for cloudy test taking
Don't take any of his classes. You won't get above a 7/10 on a paper or a test even if you study for many days. His lectures don't matter on tests or papers and all research for those assignments is on you. What I learned was interesting but the professor was dead weight... essentially. The one bonus was the flexibility in taking the class.
Dr. Ortsey doesn't take into consideration that students taking his class online are doing it that way to work school into a busy life. He assigns last minute busy work essays and grades like we're all doctorate candidates. Don't take a class from him if you want to protect your gpa -- and your sanity.
As many have said prof consistently gives low grades without merit. Must avoid this class, and awful instructor
Professor Ortsey has a high level of knowledge relating to Political Science topics. As others have mentioned, he grades very strictly. He does give you feedback on why you got the grade you did, but it is very hard to get above a 80% on any given assignment. It would be very difficult to achieve an A in his classes.
Hands down the best prof in the department! This was my second independent study with him (seventh class overall) and I'll miss him dearly. If you plan on going to grad school, this is the guy to whip you into shape. Not a prof for wusses.
Flexible class lecture since it is a hybrid class. The Professor is tough as nails. If you like pain sign up for any of his classes, he will give it to you with unclear instructions and mundane reading. slackers beware !
This professor was by far one of the worst profs I had at IPFW. Wouldn't accept work if it didn't meet his standards that weren't clarified in the syllabus.
WORST teacher ever! He's very smart but his social/teaching skills are awful. He would assign one thing then mark all of s off for something he never mentioned. He tears every answer apart. I was warned I'd never get more than a 70% on anything & they were right. Not sure how he's still teaching after all the negative feedback & reputation. AVOID!
I took this class online because I am in my last semester and work full time. I had a high GPA but I failed this class. The instructor assigned busy work with very little time to get it done. 65% of my grade was for work to be turned in in the last 10 days of class, too late to do anything about it. I made it through five years of school with As!!!
GPA before this class was 3.56. Waited over a month for each assignment to be graded. Gives no information on what you will be tested over. Not enough time to finish test. Commentsresponses are condescending. Assigns last minute work. Grades extremely harshly and like an English teacher. Workloadreading is overwhelming and spread out poorly.
Work load is to intense for the level of the class!
V450 Sports and Public Policy- I took it online & thought I would fail. He ended up making the material interesting although i hate sports. The class was challenging and like 5 books were required, but it was a 400 level class. If you watch/attend every lecture you will do fine on the test(all essay). Receive grades within two weeks.
Supposed to be a general education requirement but he expects immense prior knowledge in political science. Assigns last minute writing assignments. Doesn't tell you what to expect on the tests. Feedback on papers doesn't make any sense. Do NOT take this class if you aren't a political science major. Won't end well.
There is a very large of amount reading. The tests are all essay and pretty difficult as you have to memorize obscure names and situations and then relate them to how they affected the politics of their time. I did learn a lot but would not take again if given the chance.
I took this class as an elective thinking it would be an interesting class. This was an extremely difficult class. He teaches and grades this class like it's a 400 level class. He assigns papers and gives you a day or 2 to turn them in. He limits the size of the paper to 1 page, but then grades it &asks why you didn't include 18472718 more things.
I signed up for this course as Gen-Ed credit. One typical week looks like 50 pages of reading, watching a 2 hr 45 min. lecture, watching a 2 hr movie and writing one page on it. Feedback and grading takes several weeks and you are lucky if you get one positive word. I have a 3.8 GPA and could not get higher than 7 or 8 out of a paper. AVOID THIS!!!
I took an intro level course, and it was at a difficulty of a 400 level course. There were 4 exams, all blue books. The tests consist of IDs and an essay. You basically have to write a short essay for each ID. He provides feedback on your exam, but his handwriting is so horrible you can't read it to know what you did wrong.
I read a lot of the poor comments on here and unfortunately they all add up when I think about Ortsey. The biggest issue I had with him was that my tests would come back marked all over the place with things I should have added, but would have been impossible to, as I always used the full 75 minutes to complete exams. Extra credit carried me here.
He does a great job of explaining the important people and aspects of the scandals in the course. He has a lot of writing assignments, some given at inopportune times. Takes a while to get grades back because there are many papers due at one time. Exams are difficult. There is A LOT of reading involving 3 books before the midterm. Watch Lectures!
Dr. Ortsey is the most difficult instructor I've ever had. Although he is knowledgeable and makes me interested in the topics, anytime I'm signing up for a class with him I'm filled with dread. I don't expect to ever get an A from him, and I was a 4.0 until I had him. Having said that, he is knowledgeable and is open to helping when necessary. <3
Very passionate teacher, always asks if any questions. But for me it was always a thousand questions the content never made sense and was really hard. He grades very harsh on tests and writes so much you cant read it. Only reason I did okay was the extra credit which was well needed and should be done.
Professor Ortsey is perhaps one of the toughest professors I have had. He is very knowledgeable, he does care about his students, but his way of grading is highly subjective and I found it rather difficult to please his style of grading. Be prepared for many IDs and essays.
Every week for the 16 week course we watched a different movie and discussed the political themes of the film. Craig would give 1-2 questions and expect a full 1 page paper. On the feedback, after 2-4 weeks of grading time, he would mark me down for not answering questions that weren't even asked in the first place. I got nothing higher than a C
Prof Ortsey is by far the most difficult professor I've had at PFW. I took his summer Politics and Film course. Every week for 8 weeks we had at least one paper due, and the 401 section had a 12-15 page research paper due. The exams are very difficult and require copious amounts of studying. Overall, he knows his stuff, but he expects too much.
Seems to grade things very harshly and subjectively (even said not really to a definition that HE GAVE IN CLASS!) his handwriting is very difficult to read so you cant tell what you did wrong on your essays or assignments, expects way too much work out of an introductory class.
Dr. Ortsey teaches a few sections of introductory chemistry labs along with political science. I completely regret taking his lab section. He does not follow the grading criteria set forth by the people who create the labs, and counts an entire problem wrong if you miss a unit. Extremely hard to please when it comes to grading! Save yourself.
Great professor, obviously knowledgeable about the content. Small number of graded assignments but the few are graded fairly. Not a class you can slack in and expect a good grade. There is a lot of research required for the paper, and a lot of reading. but hard work and effort are rewarded with good grades.
Look, to address all of the other complaints on here, yes Dr. Ortsey is incredibly tough. But this is a university professor. He is not teaching high school courses. Sure there are easier professors available, but did you really come to university for an easy time? or did you come to learn? Anyone who says this is too hard will not last in college.
Ortsey seems to do everything in his power to make life as a student more difficult than necessary. There are several decently-sized writing assignments throughout the semester, all of which come without warning. Ortsey never provides accurate prompts, taking off dozens of points for not answering questions which were never asked. Avoid if possible
Professor Ortsey is amazing at his job. He is a great speaker and educator, makes class and discussions fun and engaging, but his classes wont be an easy pass if you dont put in the effort. Highly recommended, wonderful man.
Dr. Ortsey's lectures are well-organized and interesting. He gives great clarification if you ask him questions. I came away with much greater interest in British politics. He words the writing assignments strangely, so sometimes it's hard to know what he wants. To succeed, just answer the first question mostly and give a few lines to the others.
I have taken this professor twice now.. I am an honors students and strive to do my absolute best. It has been IMPOSSIBLE to get an A from him on any assignments, small or large. I knew I shouldn't have taken him a second time. Save your GPA and don't take him.
Ortsey teaches Chemistry 11500 Lab. The wording of the lab is annoying. You will learn the language after you fail a few labs. The average grade before the curve was a D. He says he will help, but the answers are taking the long way around. There was a computer problem in lab. He figured it out and didn't tell the class. We had to figure it out.
If you value a good grade, and not being stressed all semester, take Columbia for CHM 115 lab. He does not follow the grading criteria, and will count the whole problem wrong if you miss a unit. Failed to help class when computer equipment didn't work during a lab. Save yourself before you sign up for this class!
Professor Ortsey was the worst professor I have had. He is usually late for labs and that makes it hard for you to finish. His grading does not make sense. A group of us went to the dean. Things seemed better after. He is the only lab professor that makes you do things the hardest way possible. Be happy there is a curve.
Dr. Ortsey is great at presenting material and educating. He is not good with time management. Had to ask multiple times(3-4weeks after due) for feedback on papers. His feedback is generic, almost like copy/paste. very tough grader. all online, copy/paste from previous semester. awesome class, but he expects the world, and gives minimal effort.
I had Dr. Ortsey for CHEM 115 lab. He's a nice guy, but is wayyy too tough on grading. If you miss one unit on an equation then the whole problem is counted as incorrect. He is very helpful during lab when you have questions though.
Lol this is the worst professor I have ever had. He honestly makes me want to switch my major. Never graded ANYTHING on time (including our final grades ) and used bland copy and paste feedback. Totally wouldve pass/failed this class IF ANY GRADES HAD BEEN ENTERED. Avoid this guy like the plague unless you want want to fail
While he is nice, he is the harshest grader I've seen, never forget to write units or your grade will suffer (never forget lab procedure otherwise you will fail). Also, if you miss any classes, good luck making them up. Even if you're sick you get 0 for labs. That being said, he does do his best to help you if you have trouble.
Had him for lab and hes not a bad guy in person, but dear god if you arent a prodigy chemist by the time you came out of your mothers womb may god help you and your grades. Way too hard of a grader, choose someone else.
This was the same class as 401 but with a shorter paper assignment instead for those wondering. Our final was graded AFTER the deadline!! Don't buy all of the books. All you need is All the President's Men and another Watergate book. Skim these and use them for your papers for worthless feedback. As interesting as the class sounds, avoid it!
Most of this class is difficult and unnecessary. Way too much reading is expected of you outside of class. For the tests, you have to be able to remember a lot of details about so many different topics, people, or events. He takes forever to grade things. Didn't get my first two assignments graded until midterms. Don't take as a Gen Ed
He's racist don't know what more to say than that, he failed me on my first couple of labs because i only put my first last name down and he couldn't prove they were mine even though my name is hyphenated. He's also rude and stuck up, if you want someone who tries to help you don't take him. Forgot to mention, i had him as my lab professor.
I was paired with a foreign exchange student and when he found out i could speak Spanish he was excited so we spoke in Spanish throughout our lab, then all of a sudden Craig comes up to us and says we have to speak english in lab. I walked out of that lab and dropped the class, I went to the chem dept with this information and they did nothing.
FOR 350.This professor is a tough grader regardless of how good you are in his class. Very big on lecture and lecture everyday except for midterm and final. Talk fast and always go beyond the time. Weekly paper and two heavy research paper. He publicly announced that no one get 100% on any of the assignments. Don't expect to get A in class. NEVER!
If you want to keep your GPA up, do NOT take him. There are NO study guide for midterm and final and you will have to write a short paper ONCE a week. Does not post the grades at all to the BrightSpace until he submit the final grade on BluePrint. Graded heavily and lectured are very heavy. Students file complaints but no action were taking by Dept
Definitely very hard to please, units are super important or else the whole problem is ticked off. Leaves feedback that does not make sense. Save time and yourself and do not take Ortsey, I'd advise you all to take Columbia for CHM 115 LAB!
Worst class I've ever taken! He assigns reading after EACH class and excepts you to remember the tiniest of details. Makes us take notes as a whole but will accuse you of cheating on quizzes stating it looks too alike compared to others when you went solely off your notes! Wrote me up TWICE for cheating when I used the notes, we ALL took as a class
This class is SO overwhelming. The 208 and 401 classes were mixed; this format just doesn't work. He assumed we all knew things that many of us were unfamiliar with, but those at the higher level were. This makes his VERY dense lectures even more confusing. I stopped attending class and just watched the lectures online so I could comprehend them.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone who is a freshman. He took months to grade papers and video notes were long and felt like you had to write everything he said down. I recommend you read the books he gives before the first day. Overall, he's nice but if you're a freshman, you can be completely caught off guard by the way he teaches.
Dr. Ortsey is a very tough grader no matter how many questions you ask, and doesn't input grades until the very end of the semester. If you talk to him, he's very understanding and will give you more clarification on things but I would not take him again. If you need a class for GCapstone for graduation, do not choose this one.
I don't think I have disliked a professor more. He is so uptight and the harshest grader I have ever seen. He makes things so hard for us just because he can. He kicked us out of the class on the first day because we were inside the classroom before he was. Save yourself and don't take him. He isn't even a chem professor. 0/10 recommend :(
This professor is an inspiration to withdraw and find a better professor. I positively believe the reason he has a political science degree and teaches instead chemistry is because he failed chemistry in college, had to change majors, and now takes his deep seated anger out on the next generation of students.
Save your mental health and pick a different teacher.
You must be in class on time and have your lab preview or else you get kicked out of lab and can't make it up. Not allowed to have a water bottle. Must wear goggles until the end of class. Can't pick your lab partner. Harsh grader and provides no feedback; grades submitted at the end of semester. Must scan the lab to submit. Must write in notebook.
Professor Ortsey is the bane of my existence. He never grades anything so you don't know your grade until the class is almost over. He thinks you cheat or use AI when it is clear to anyone educated that you did not. Doesn't answer emails very fast and always blames it on having a tough day/week/weekend.
I didn't take the other reviews seriously, Dr. Ortsey is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Harshest grader I've ever had and gives no feedback/won't hear of any disagreements. Strictest lab professor ever, kicked dozens out over the semester.
he was helpful if you asked him questions in lab, but that was just about the only time. if anything is not 100% correct he will mark everything wrong with no explanation. if you don't have the prelab you will not be able to do the lab that day or make it up. just don't understand why he teaches chemistry lab
A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, and a class proffesor thou ill advise doth take.
I find it absurb how he expects us to remember more than 17 hours of lecture into one exam. He goes off topic and adds on unnecessary comments. Besides the lecture, he does not give us study guides. All his political courses are formatted the same of 12-15 page paper, 2 exams, & occasional short papers. Exams are webcam and online.
This professor has to be the worst professor I have ever had. The word to best describe him would be a tyrant. He is the most unorganized professor; takes forever to grade assignments and constantly has an excuse as to why the assignments are not graded. The content in this class is very interesting but I am very disappointed in this professor.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone! He is extremely difficult when it comes to grading with lack of explanation as to why you are receiving that grade and is ALWAYS behind on grading!!! When he does get around to grading he adds unnecessary comments into his feedback that are arrogant, unhelpful, and again unnecessary!
I do believe that Prof. Ortsey's heart is in the right place, but this course, as others have noted, is more difficult than it needs to be. You are constantly crossing your fingers waiting on the arrival of your grades. Lectures are dragged out and do not necessarily help for assignments/connect to reading material. No notes on test... why?
Don't waste your time/money on taking this man's class. Never got more than 80% on any of his assignments. Failed the last class I had with him. Classes include a 12pg paper, 2 exams (webcam, screen recording, closed book/note), and random papers given 3days before due. He will accuse you of plagiarizing every single assignment even if you didn't.
This professor was one of the worst professors I have encountered at PFW. I am a graduate in Business Management and Marketing. I have had a 3.8 GPA, and have never failed a class throughout my 4 years at PFW except this one. He accused me of cheating, he would not grade promptly, and will grade way to strict on writing assignment.
I thought I had experienced bad professors before....I was sadly mistaken. Professor Ortsey is the epitome of "hurry up and wait". Takes forever to grade assignments, tests taken on Respondus, and has the worst lectures I have ever had to deal with. Avoid, avoid, avoid....do not take his classes.
I think Dr.Ortsey is ripped apart a little too harshly in most of these reviews. Dr.Ortsey is a fantastic instructor, he clearly understands the content, presents the labs in a friendly manner, and is incredibly helpful if you ask for help with a genuine interest to learn. However, he is OBSCENELY harsh and nit picky when it comes to grading.
Was not THAT bad. He was a bit more strict than other lab professors from what I heard when it comes to grading. He is very nitpicky and your lab report will end up being several pages because of all the calculations he requires but if you follow what he wants you'll get a good grade.
