The best material is from the main textbook, the worst from the primer book and the videos. The lectures are mixed; sometimes OK, but usually extremely irritating. He needs to keep his political views out of the classroom! Take Marine Biology, instead.

Craig is an awesome teacher. I dont think there was a day that i didnt laugh and enjoy his class. There is a lot of memorizing to do but he's very helpful when it comes to tests and homework. Very entertaining class and information. Changed my views :)

The Bearded Wierdo is an awsome professor! He teaches with compassion and trys to get people to realize how important it is 4 every 1 to care for our earth and its creaters. He has changed my preception on life for the better! Great Teacher.

He's one of the greatest teachers at Mt. Sac. If one Asks around on campus and one will be surprised how much he's constantly being praised. Usually the people that rank him bad are mad about their grades. The reality is that most people are to lazy.

It's not an easy class, it requires a lot of studying and memorizing. But he is extremely funny and active in class, and super cool. He doesn't do the curve thing on test, and he doesn't like ppl being late or miss his class.

one of the hardest classes ever especially for the two measily units you get, but hands down one of the best teachers i've ever had this class is hard but the experience you get out of it is well worth it, the mid-terms are pretty hard but if you keep a good notebook it's a piece of cake.

Abso-freakin-lutely awesome prof. that keeps the class fun and interesting. However, he does expect you to put in the work, make no mistakes about it. The lab class is about 3 times harder than the lecture course. This mofo WILL fail you if you don't do the work, and boy can this guy walk!

Never ever a boring day. Petersen makes an awkward subject in a class full of strangers into one of the funnest classes of all time. As for the grading, manageable amount of HW and if you do it all the tests arent that hard. Not the easiest class, but it is the funnest.

It's basically a love-hate relationship with this guy. He is a great teacher, knows what he's talking about. Lots of reading on the student's part. He gives you pop quizzes, treats the class like guinea pigs. In other words, he TRICKS you. I won't reveal what he does, you'll just have to see for yourselves.

Just finished this class and I must say it was one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had. If you are responsible your reading, you will have no problem with this class. His homework assignments are straight forward and if you follow his directions, you'll get full points! Tests/quizzes questions are from the textbook.

It was by far the best class I've taken. People take our world for granted and never truly understand whats happening around us everyday in our lives. The two students who rated him poor must have dropped out because the dates they wrote there comments are clearly dated. They couldn't handle the class, those Urban Children...lol.

The BEST experience of my life! This is not an easy class and takes ALOT of reading and memorization but I would take him as a teacher anyday!

I took his lab and lecture at the same time. A bit of a challenge, plenty of work. But he is a great teacher and teaches you great information and makes it fun. On of my favorite teachers ever.

i took craig for lecture and he's definitely one of my favorite professors. he's very passionate about teaching students about the environment. during class meetings he'd usually talk about current events instead of the reading assignments so make sure you read the book on your own. he's also really funny.

Literally most passionate teacher,extremely funny.He builds a relationship with the students.Various videos, never lectures off book. read carefully on your own.memorization of environmental principles required. Attendance is mandatory or points are deductive from your grade. Extremely helpful during office hours. Love the guy.

Took him for human sexuality in the fall and hands down he was the best professor I've had, he's very clear on directions. He's very, very funny and energetic, if you take this class be prepared to be comfortable with his weird topics he brings up. Final/test are easy, and he does random quizzes so be prepared even though they're not that hard.

Craig was a great influence in my life, I am now a Federal Biologist because of his and Karyn KR's influence on myself. The energy in equals the energy out - hard course, I learned tons, because I worked hard and because Craig and Karyn are both GREAT TEACHERS who are very passionate about their "work." Took the course in 1996, I owe them thanks.

I had the pleasure of having him this past fall, and I can say I've never met a more passionate teacher. He is amazing and I will never forget the class and him. There is a lot of reading, but if you keep up then you will have no trouble. I highly recommend.

He looks like the Mt. SAC Mountie. But hands down he is one of the best professors I've ever taken at Mt. SAC he is very passionate about saving the environment and you will learn a lot in his class. His class might be tough but I promise you will never feel bored while he is lecturing.

Ok there is A LOT of memorization for this class. Hes a great guy but that doesnt matter when it comes to getting your work done. If you fall behind you'll probably fail. He does want you to succeed because he remembers what its like to be a student. He'll change your life, for the better.

I just took his class definitely one of the most time consuming,but very rewarding classes ive ever taken. It is difficult but you must dedicate tone to this class for exams. The principles arent pointless if you study them you will realize that its an everyday thing. Be prepared to study

Anyone who complains about the relevance of the material or how tough he is did not take the open-minded approach that is necessary for his class. The truths he reveals are hard to swallow, but taking this class is one of the best things you can do in your educational life. I switched majors from film to bio completely because of this class.

Craig is the realest, the most raw teacher there is. He tells you how it is and will he will certainly make you listen even if you refuse too. His class is amazing, but not for those with weak hearts and with no motivation. His class requires dedication. It may be hard but I highly recommend him. You will not regret it.

Took a long time to catch on to his style. Does not lecture from the textbook very often. Reminds you on a regular basis you are in college, so I suppose that means, it is up to you to teach yourself the material.

I enjoyed his class very much, I would definitely take again. If you keep up with the assigned reading, do decently on the quizzesexams and participate in the group discussions, you will pass. You take what you put in that class. Vocabulary is essential. He drops the lowest exam. Read, study and be ready to talk about sex. "Don't be bashful."

He isnt the easiest professor in the world, i studied for all my tests and read a decent amount and finished with a B, but its what i learned from the class that makes him worth it. He is amazing, opens your eyes to what is going on and how things need to be done. He has such a passion for the environment and actually cares about how his students are! There are 3 tests, but he drops the lowest score, quizzes throughout the semester, and yes you do have to memorize principles but its like rules of the environment. TAKE HIM!

This class is not for those who want an easy A, this class is for people who have a genuine passion for knowledge. Yes, he does not clarify what to study and he makes you memorize things that may seem abitrary to the majority of people. But you leave his class with an understanding of the environment rather than a memorization of the textbook.

This class is not for the faint of heart. If you want to get a good grade, you need to dedicate A LOT of time outside of the classroom, as well as attend every lecture. Although this class frustrated me to no end at times, I left with something much more than a good grade. I left with a respect for nature and a much gentler perspective of life.

Craig Petersen will make you laugh, he'll make you cry, he'll make you reevaluate, & he'll make you want to make a change. This class is not for the faint of heart or those you don't like to hear unfortunate truths point blank. Craig Petersen. Where do I even begin? I took him SPRING 2015 for BIO 6 LAB. I have been at Mt. SAC for 7 years and this semester was the only semester that will be the most memorable. Lab meets only once a week, for five hours -- field trips 90% of the semester! The work load is not a joke, but it's definitely not difficult. Exams are fair.

Very smart and inspirational. He does tend to go off on tangents however so you kind of have to teach yourself out of the book since he rarely goes over the material during class. Tests are pretty hard so definitely do the reading! Show up and do the reading and extra credit and you'll pass.

Fun guy, however, the books he wants you to BUY (not rent) add up to be about 200+ dollars - a huge financial commitment. If you're passionate about the subject w/ money to burn, go ahead! However, I know many students attend Mtsac BECAUSE of financial reasons, so if you're tight on cash, find a prof who's more forgiving when it comes to textbooks

3 exams drops one, final is cumulative but only for that part. Has a few pop quizzes so keep up with the reading, offers extra credit. Yes you do have to memorize principles, but that what makes him a great teacher, you dont just learn, you understand! You dont have to buy the books, JUST RENT. Craig is one of those few educators you have in your life that will change your life if you're willing to open your mind and put in the work. Took his class Humans in the Environment about a decade ago and through my college years it was one of my favorite classes and the only professor who's name I can remember. Peterson opened my eyes to the world around me and the Primier of Ecologial Principles still sits on my book case. Water is the medium of life!

You get out of this class what you put in. The work load isn't tough. Some people will complain about lecture being a waste but honestly this class prepares you for tougher classes when & if you transfer. Lots of memorization! Take advantage of this professor's class. If someone complains about the class, they did it wrong.

OK, this is the most interesting and inspiring professor you can take at Mt Sac! He makes you want to get up and help the environment. Be sure to KNOW ALL THE PRINCIPLES! AND READ THE TEXTBOOK! Although, he drops the lowest exam the class is very demanding but so worth it!

Arguably one of the most enthusiastic professors I have ever had. Charismatic, funny and passionate. Do the reading and pass. This class is a life changer. Attend, listen, ask questions and be open.

Craig Petersen's class is very dependent on attendance and reading your chapters. He gives you a very long study guide for each exam, but if you read your chapters you should breeze through it. The principles are at least 30% of test points, so learn them! The day of the exam he usually reviews the first half of class, and spits out a few answers.

Lots of reading, very few real assignments. Pop quizzes, tests. Quite hard, with principles. The real kicker in the class is that you have to memorize 50 principles by the end. He's very funny, though, and his hilarious style makes up for the long lectures. Very passionate, but he's super-liberal, politically. He's open to dissent, though. Read!

Yes he is tough, yes he is strict, and yes he can be very direct. But his passion for teaching is impeccable and admiring. Haven't met a teacher like this in a long time. He inspired me and made me be a better student. If you follow his directions to the T, if you are never absent and do the work you can get a A. I did! Best teacher ever!!!

Arguably one of the best professors I've ever taken. He inspired me to change career paths. He is very book heavy so get ready to memorize some of the details of each chapter which play heavily into the exams. Overall easy course just be prepared to be engaged and put a little work and you will get by easily.

Craig is the best professor ever! Yes, there is a lot of studying, assigned a lot of flash cards, but if you PAY ATTENTION and PARTICIPATE, the class will be a breeze. He is hilarious and makes lectures intriguing, and interesting.

Don't take his class if you think you deserve a good grade just because you showed up and skimmed through the readings once. Holy freaking cow, Craig is by far one of the BEST professors I've EVER had. Sure his class is pretty damn difficult, but your grade really depends on the amount of effort you put in. Engineering here. Compared to engineering courses, this class is a walk in the park. Spent an hour a week on this class, maybe less. Compare that to differential equations, physics, statics, or chemistry courses with labs, hw sets that take hours to do and exams that make you feel dumb. Petersen is awesome and the class is fun and interesting.

The professor who is passionate not only about the subject(s) he teaches, but also passionate about how and who you are in the world. He is the professor you will never forget.

I still remember Craig Petersen from 1983. I went into environmentalism, he instilled a sense of duty to care about the planet and living creatures. I worked really hard but only got a B. One thing I still remember is the last night of class/final exam he walked me to my car at 10 PM because he cared about me being safe in the parking lot.
