Lectures are interesting. Not many writing assignments but plenty of reading every night. You definitely need to study for tests to get good grades. You can tell he enjoys his job...which is always nice!
Just read for an hour a week. One paper that is not hard, you just have to do it. He like teaching the subject so he knows his Pol Sci. Recommend him all the way.
Oh man if you take anyone else for this course you are cheating yourself. Scarpelli is great, I watched him successfully engage a class of 170 in a discussion. Doesn't choose sides but he has worked for the Democratic party in the past.
Awesome guy! Explains things very thoughouly and very clear. His lectures are very interesting and keep your attention. The quizzes are kinda a pain because you have to read an entire chapter before, but the tests are very straightforward.
Excellent with lectures, very engaging. Decent and managable workload, learn a lot. Definately the guy to chose for GE.
this guy is great. he knows the material exceptionally well and really enjoys teaching. do the reading and the tests arent bad. very engaging, even for a huge lecture class. he's the only way to go for Poly Sci. 55
Hint: He doesnt changes test/quizes year to year...
He's such an easy teacher and so interested in what he is teaching.
Took this couse over intersession. You must be incredibly stupid to fail this course
Great teacher. One of the best i've had.
Really great class. Good lecturer. Facilitated class discussion well. Do the reading and you'll do well on the quizzes. Show up for lecture and take good notes, you'll do well on the tests. I highly recommend him as a teacher if you're gonna take Pols 55.
Very clear and helpful. You can tell he's really into the stuff he teaches. Pretty easy class too. Definately the one to take.
His tests are based on his lectures. He answers question in a way people can understand and is fairly easy on assignment. If you have to take PoliSci 55, he's a great teacher for it.
Everyone seems to say that he was easy but I had a hard time in this class, and im not a slacker. I found it boring and felt that he expected you to know every detail from the notes and the book for the exams. he is not very understanding to his students problems. I did not like this class at all
he's a good teacher. make sure to ask questions and go to class. and someone needs to clue him in on some grooming habits. trim that nose hair!
Good teacher, very animated. It's a pretty hard class though, unless you have some base knowledge already. Go to class everyday and keep up with reading. lots of quizes
Nice guy, good teacher. Go to all the lectures and keep up with the reading and it should be a breeze. I got an A without ever buying or looking at the second book (and almost didn't need the first one). I would recommend his once a week lecture class if its still offered.
Very interesting lecturer. Not at all boring... especially with a semi-boring subject like political science. Very cool teacher... highly recommend!
Great teacher, knows his politics and worked for the Democrats. Although a conservative myself, I like him- he kept his views to himself which is what college professors should do. Very professional. Attend his class regularly. Take a little time to study. Take notes!!! He's a good teacher and I learned quite a bit from him.
This guy is your typical balding, aging lefty. He's a former democratic operative from SoCal, and he blames all the world's problems on America and Israel. Welcome to the indocrination. Arbeit macht frei.
doesnt change the test from semester to semester.you dont even need to go to class. just read the book occasionally and go to the study session before each test. find the test from someone who already had the class and youll get an A
A great teacher who really enjoys what he teaches, makes it interesting during the lectures and is pretty easy during intersession
He is not politically bias but does know what he is talking about. My lecture was a big late evening class but he kept it interesting and it was enjoyable.
Scarpelli is a good teacher. He gets the message out there.Reading your chapters and studying the notes are very helpful in passing the class. Acutually going to class is also the key in passing.
Scarpelli is pretty cool. It's a basic class, so if you know POLI SCI already, it's pretty easy.... but the discussions make sure it's still interesting to attend.
Great professor. He's nice and usually always prepared for class. Tests are true and false and quizes are easy. Barely any busy work at all. Definitly take him over any other professor in this subject.
This class kept my interest the entire year.He is passionate about what he teaches. True/false tests+ essay(easy). If you know anything about pols then you don't even have to do the reading. He has political experience but isn't bias. I wish all teachers taught with such enthusiasm as he does. I absolutely loved this class.
it was hard to retain all the information he gave on his subject. i felt like he expected his students to already know a politics before we were taught. his lectures were great but his tests were a challenge.
scarpelli is the man, great teacher. Amazing baseball player ask him about the Butte Sabres and he will love you. He is the oldest semi-pro baseball player in chico
Very good teacher. He made politics interesting to a construction major, ME! very interesting and good teacher. Take him.
Scarpelli has a definite love for the subject he teaches. Reading the book is a must as well as attending class (attendance points). The class is not hard if you do these two things and study on a regular basis. I recommend him!
Great teacher and knows his stuff....not too hard of a class, but you have to study and make and effort. Quizes every week are kinda annoying, but def help when it comes time for the tests. Take this class.. im not a big fan of poly sci, but i got through it with a good grade
this class was really confusing and the teacher was a jerk. the study guides didnt corrilate with the tests and was a huge waist of time
Not a big fan of this guys class. I had his class once a week and i felt he was very unorganized. He would teach us only 2 chapters and then test us on 6!And the quizes every class period got really anoying.
i hated this class! His tests are super hard and the study guides dont cover anything on the tests! It looks like this guy has gotten good ratings up to this point but i think this year he got really LAZY
The class is easy as long as you read the text then you'll do fine. Oh, and showing up for class is very helpful.
Since i stopped reading about halfway through the semester, i would have been lost if i didnt go to class. Go to class and read the books and youre good to go! I enjoyed the class, learned alot! the 3-hour class is loong, but tolerable! Scarpelli is an awesome teacher, he's enthusiastic and reasonable. Take him!
Very great and intellegent proffesor. Is open to any discussion and will motivate you to be at his class. Tests are extremely hard for someone like me who has no interest in American Government, but if you read the textbook and take good notes you should be fine. And his extra credit helps alot when you are borderline getting a D+ like I almost did
Really good teacher, his teaching style is clean and easy to understand. Knows what he's talking about and up to date on current events. Open and helpful for office hours and enjoyable to talk to. Take notes and the class will breeze through.
He's cool until you piss him off, then he's never nice
Great teacher. Knows his stuff and is very clear when teaching. He uses videos, debates, open questions and tests to teach. Tests are long but they aren't hard (100 T/F) Willing to help you. Basically show up to class and pay attention and you'll get a decent grade.
He seems to have a big ego, but the class is pretty easy if you read the book. His tests are annoying though, 100 true/false questions! Explains the system pretty well though. I suggest taking him if you dont mind sitting through a rather boring class!
AMAZING! He is a really interesting teacher and makes the class fun, talks about current events and the election. Will call you out and ask you questions if you look like you're not paying attention. Takes roll everyday. READ! 2 Quizzes a week and the tests are 100 t/f with 2 short essays. Very good class
Loved this class. Scarpelli knows his stuff and is always willing to listen to student input. Sometimes strays from class content and will talk about current events, but that helps keep the class entertaining.
Right. Scarpelli is a Political Science guy. He should keep to his field. The problem with his Soc class was a clear mis-interest in partnered academics and the belief that speaking louder made him righter (O'Rielly syndrome). He could give a damn less about Sociology. Regardless, I personally like him.
Class was extremely hard to stay awake in. Whatever you do don't take the class for three hours. Make sure you go to class because it counts twords your grade. Keep up with the readings because the quizzes come at you fast!
He's a great professor, he's good about teaching the subject without being favorable to one political party, which was what I was worried about.
Any 3 hour lecture class you take will be boring. His isn't bad! He only lectures maybe half the time and then u watch a film, READ what he assigns, sometimes take notes..his quizzes and tests are hard..don't miss this class. Just pay attention, take notes, and you will do fine.
Very fun class great debates
Awesome teacher! Had him for 3 hours on Monday nights and I thoroughly enjoyed the class (unlike the freshman).
Great teacher
Tries to keep the class interesting by asking students their opinions. Its a pretty easy class. 10 chapter quizzes, 3 exams and 1 paper. Much easier than other professors also teaching this class.
he was a really good prof. a little hard but, his lectures were great
He was pretty cool. Very clear during lectures, always wants your input as a student and he's very unbiased which is hard to come by with Political Science professors. Class is easy to do well in as long as you keep up with the readings and do some review for the tests. Lectures were always enjoyable to go to. I would highly recommend him to anyone
Class was stupid, unless your a political major. Quizzes almost weekly, and about 4 tests through the semester, with a final. The tests are 100 True or false. Not a big fan of this method of test taking. You have to know your stuff and study to do well on those exams. Easy to doze off in class.
You have to read a chapter of the book every week. He repeats important things. The tests are 100 t/f. pretty easy. I don't like political science, but he makes the class interesting.
Hated the test, 100 true/false! You have to really study to do well on the test. His lectures are more like a discussions, and if something is important he will repeat a lot of times. He does take attendance, so you have to go. and read the book since there is quizes pretty much every week.
I really dislike any type of history/gov class, but he makes it so it isn't boring. There is a quiz every 1 to 2 weeks, JUST on one chapter in the book, so the book is mandatory. There is no homework. The test is 100 t/f which is helpful if you didn't study. No essays or short answers on the test. The one term paper we've had so far was very easy.
Super interesting class! The information is so useful and he ALWAYS gets me thinking in class. Great professor, but there are weekly reading quizzes. The assigned readings for that class are really long and boring, but the quizzes arent too painful. Plus, no "town hall" assignment required! I recommend him.
Great professor! Very enthusiastic and makes sure everyone understands what he is teaching. The book is mandatory because there are weekly quizzes. He takes attendance so it's best you go to class. Tests are not difficult; 100 T/F questions. He offers several extra credit opportunities so overall the class is not hard but definitely recommended!
Scarpelli's great! Lectures are really interesting. He takes attendance in class, so it's best you go. There are 10 pretty easy quizzes that are dated on the syllabus based on the reading from the textbook, so be sure to get that. Overall great teacher.
Professor Scarpelli is great! He's very passionate about his subject and always tries to engage students during lecture. Lectures were never boring. Make sure to read the textbook! Weekly quizzes are assigned based on the reading. Definitely recommend him!
Great professor!! Took this class at 8a.m. and he definitely kept us awake. Very passionate towards his job, quizzes are easy. Everything you need to know is in the book and his lectures. He does take attendance every day! Tests are true or false. You actually get to read out of a book he wrote. Overall, best polysci professor!
He might have been better in a smaller classroom environment because large 144+ lecture halls don't lead to great discussions which he tried to do. This class is your standard AP Gov High school class. Pretty easy. He's just kind of annoying.
The tests are 100 t/f questions.....Avoid! It's easy to pass but really hard to get an A in.
Really easy class and Scarpelli is a nice guy. Got an A and barely studied and only did half the readings! Take this class! Pay attention in lecture and you'll do fine. It's easy to pay attention too because he makes the class interesting.
Not that great of a class. 100 t/f questions for all tests is insane. He's a bit irritating. When I asked him for help wasn't helpful at all and said read the book. Study guides basically tell you to know everything in each chapter and is not specific literally just lists subheadings in chapters. Avoid class. No town hall though.
Great teacher! He has a specific test method though which is very hard to adapt to. The quizzes are multiple choice and then the 50 q tests are T-F answers. I can't learn from true or false testing; my brain gets the truefalse statement confused and then I leave with nothing. But he really is passionate about government and very knowledgeable.
Professor Scarepelli hands down is one of the best professors I had in Chico state. His lectures were so understandably clear. Everything that he lectures is important bc 1) on Quiz or 2) on Exam so important to attend class ( he takes attendance) too. There are quizzes in class just about every week. So you must have& key* read textbook to pass.
This is my second time taking POLS 155 because I had a horrible professor the first time on top of the fact that I hate anything that has to do with the government or politics because it has never made sense and I have never thought any of it mattered or was important. But my oh my he changed my view on all of it! HE WAS GREAT!
If you read the assigned readings you will be ready for his weekly 10 question quizzes. He does have 100 question quizzes, but they are all true and false questions, so again just read and comprehend and you'll do great . He is interesting and has a fun way to learn about political views etc. All around great professor !
He's a good professor and gives very interesting lectures. Tests are unnecessarily hard; 100 questions true and false, each question is about a paragraph long, and changes small details to determine it to be false. There is a lot of reading but definitely manageable.
Very intelligent and qualified in the course material with hands-on experience in the State Legislature. Lectures are somewhat loose in structure(take notes!) Regular quizzes based off reading easy(10 ?'s, m.c.) Tests not too bad but IMPOSSIBLE to finish! 50 T/F ?'s + 2 essays all within 50min- that's unreasonable. Extra Cred opportunities given.
He never finishes talking about what he's supposed to and goes off on tangents. His quizzes have questions that have NOTHING to do with the text. Exams are 100 T/F questions. Tons of pointless reading. I'm an A student, and I got a low C in this class. I studied every week, and saw no change. Avoid his classes if you can.
He makes the discussion fun and the quizzes are easy as long as you read.
Craig Scarpelli is a very smart man who teaches a well planned and though course. He is the type of teacher who makes a not so fun subject into a relevant topic. Beware, he does give 100 Question T/F exams but he provides a study guide. Honestly not so bad. A quiz or two a week. Read and you'll be fine!
His lectures were always super interesting, and get involves the class a lot. However he doesn't put up slides with notes and tests are only T/F and very specific with details so you have to know the exact facts which makes them pretty hard.
He's a very smart politician and is very educated, not the best teacher though. He covers very little in class and gets distracted and goes off topic when lecturing. He doesn't use powerpoint and he takes attendance every day. Tests are 100 T/F so you have to know every little detail, and weekly quizzes but if you do the reading those are easy.
Prof. Scarpelli is one of a kind. He demonstrates his political views quite often, but given that he is a pols teacher, that is likely to happen. He actually has experience in the political world which makes him more credible. He also assigns weekly quizzes based solely on in depth textbook readings. Be prepared to spend time on this class.
He has three 100 T/F question exams and weekly quizzes. If you want an A you better read every page of the textbook and record his lectures on your phone, and play them when you go to bed. Study guides are pointless, just takes headings from the textbook. Read all exams questions thoroughly 90% are trick questions. Do not take his classes.
He really makes you work for your grade. His in class lectures are drawn out and often times he goes off topic. Also he gives weekly quizzes which are straight from textbook readings, and then afterwards he teaches the material from the quiz. Tests are insanely detailed and you must spend hours on hours studying to pass. He's a cool guy though.
The lectures regularly tie in with modern, recent, and important issues we face in our government today and are moving. However, it is difficult to learn what's important because he doesn't provide "notes" in the usual sense but broad subjects you must know everything about(around 40 for each test). Beware the 3 100 question true/false exams.
One of my favorite professors.
This class requires a lot of reading, but it isn't very hard if you just do a little bit every day. The tests are 100 questions mc but don't let this scare you he prepares you for it. As long as you keep up on the reading and actually go class (lecture material included on test) you will be fine. The quizzes are helpful as well to study for test.
Takes attendance every day. 3 100 true or false exams... they are very difficult and very specific. He's a very knowledgeable and interesting professor but the exams makes it difficult to get an A. He offers a fair amount of extra credit though. There's also 10 quizzes and one term paper.
this was my first time with this teacher but second time taking pols 155. I showed up to every lecture and did all the readings/assignments. quizzes are okay but the exams will mess you up. 100 questions true or false. no mercy. gives a good amount of extra credit but even that was barely enough to help me pass. yells loud and waves hands a lot
Scarpelli was an amazing teacher. He had descriptive lectures that needed to be attended and notes need to be taken. Along with the in class lecture, the textbook needs to be read and notes need to be taken on that as well. If both of these things are done the quizzes and tests are easy to pass.
There was a lot of reading and quizzes. Sometimes we had 2 quizzes in one week. His mid term and finals are 100 questions all true and false. His tests are a little tricky because he words them weird. There are not many papers, I think we only had 2. There was a couple extra credit opps too. A great prof and is good at teaching just take notes
Scarpelli is so passionate about government which makes his class so interesting! Lectures are engaging, and you learn a lot from his personal experience working in politics. He cares about students and makes everything easy to understand and relatable. Easy class, but tests are brutal- 50 t/f and 2 essays in 50min. Other than that, great class!!!
This class was simple and Dr. Scarpelli gives great lectures. The thing that was a drawback is we didn't have many assignments to buffer our grade. The tests were all true/false which really starts to mess with you after a while. He does take attendance and the lectures are super important.
The tests are horrible and the study guide does not help. 100 true or false and they are wordy. You HAVE to read for a quiz every week and the chapters are loooong. Lectures are also mandatory.
Attendance is taken every class and quizzes are taken at the end of class. Quizzes are on the book material, tests are on in class lectures. Tests are true or false only but ask 3 or 4 different things in each question. Scarpelli explains things well and thoroughly, it's just a lot of information. Doesn't put test grades on BB, only the quizzes.
Tests are true or false but some questions are obvious. Quizzes are fairly easy and are usually about 10 questions. He collects them and gives us the answer so you know what you got. He had two extra credit opportunities, one paper, and one project. They were all easy.
Awesome guy, makes stuff interesting. Probably going to fail the class just because Im lazy but I do learn in this lecture.
Tests are true or false, but some questions are easy. Quizzes are given every week, except when you have a test, based on lectures and reading. He explains things very well.
Scarpelli is a pretty good professor. His lectures are generally straight forward, but he does tend to randomly call on people. As long as you show up to class and study for the tests using his study guides you'll do fine.
Scarpelli was one of my faves this semester. Through his lectures, you can tell he is super passionate about what he does. With everything online, he has been very understanding. He almost always extends deadlines for another week. Tests and quizzes are really straightforward, but mostly are pulled directly from the TB so you should read!!
Scarpelli is amazing and always tries to play devil's advocate during the class discourse. A lot of reading, but you are in college so get used to it.
3/4 tests online all true or false questions. Went to class for the first month then never again and I ended with an A.
The class is actually really engaging and it's interesting to hear everyone debate and discuss different viewpoints. He doesn't make you feel bad about asking questions. The tests are 100 true or false questions so they're kinda hard. But there's really no HW, you're supposed to read but I never did.
Went the first week, then stopped going since it was 8am. Don't buy the first book, you won't need it, $100 waste. Summary and quiz every two weeks. The only thing is he is very biased Democrat. As someone who is on the opposite side, I disliked the bias. Very easy, take him for the GE. A lot of the quizzes are on quizlet too. True/false exams.
It's a tough class but you'll pull through if you pay attention and take notes.
I never really liked poli sci classes, but his lectures are actually interesting and easy to stay awake for, it was an 8am but worth it for the better teacher, quizzes are easy, summaries on articles are easy too, tests are 2 hours for 100 true/false questions but manageable, definitely recommend trying to get this teacher!
He makes learning about government fun & I loved attending his class! But I struggled with his tests. His tests follow the book, not the lectures & are 100 T/F questions. There are quizzes & summaries so there is plenty of opportunity for points but no where near as many as the tests. Attendance was optional & you could attend in person or on zoom.
I showed up maybe 5 times and still got a B. Craig is great and I wish I showed up more because he actually made class very interesting I just didn't want to be there at 8am. Take him for POLS155!!
he was so chill! Quizzes are so accessible, that the book isn't really needed. The final exams were true or false, would definitely retake him he is the best.
Awesome professor! Lectures were super informative and he is a very good teacher. Although attendance is make sure you understand whats going on in the class.
Book isn't required, and quizzes are easy but I'd recommend studying for exams since they are worth a good portion of your grade and are all T o F questions. Gives great feedback and works with you if anything pops up.
His class wasnt too bad. It was structured so it was easy to keep up with work. All the test were easy just stay focused for exams. Other then that you will be fine. His lectures are actually interesting
Professor Scarpelli is an amazing professor and I loved listening to his lectures. I found his lectures very intriguing and he often asked the students questions too, to make the material very inclusive, which helped me learn better. I highly recommend him, lectures are great and informative, and he is always there for his students.
Professor Scarpelli was AWESOME! I loved his lectures because he is very interactive and always getting people to speak up and share their views. The homework was not that heavy, usually just a quiz due each friday that you have the whole week to complete.
He was good except for in one very key area: the exams were 100 questions, all True/False. I'm still shocked and appalled by this. Everyone I talked to about this was aghast. My friend who is now a teacher herself said, "T/F questions don't test your knowledge, they test your test-taking skills." The final's time limit was 120 minutes for 100 Qs.
This prof is like the meme of the old man yelling at cloud come to life. I passed the class, but will I remember anything? Def not. Teaching method lacking in substance and connections. Tests are all trick questions that are T/F only.
Overall I did not like the midterms, as everyone says they are 100 T/F questions that are meant to confuse you and very specific and long in wording. Lectures in person he likes to engage his students by asking them hard to answer questions and challenges you based on your answer to get you thinking about the multiple perspectives.
It was in all honesty a veryyy easy class. He interacts with the students by asking questions. All the work is online and the rest are online his midterms are 100 T/F questions. His quizzes are not bad either. But you have to go to class he takes role everyday.
Super easy class. attendance wasnt mandatory till the end of the semester. all exams and quizzes are online at home and are "open note". this subject is really boring to me, but he had a way of making me interested and actually pay attention. highly reccommned for easy A. there are every couple week summaries, but only five questions.
Prof. Scarpelli keeps his POL155 lectures engaging. Though tests are mostly true/false, quizzes and summaries make up for it. I found unstuck ai super helpful for organizing my notes and studying. Overall, a solid class if you stay on top of the work.
No attendance was taken during the first couple of weeks, he starts passing a sheet around during the last couple of weeks of the semester. Lectures are boring. Exams are all true or false questions. Final is just a 100 questions true or false.
Tests are 100 t/f question. My brain explodes. He makes you buy his own textbook that he wrote. Kinda tacky.
Prof. Scarpelli is amazing! So incredibly nice and his class is very easy. Theres no in person assignments or tests, theyre all online which makes it so easy. His lectures are a bit long to sit through but he is overall such a kind soul and has a great personality. Take this class!
Great teacher. I had him online and had 1-2 lectures through zoom during the week. Would talk about the course and respond to questions students have. Assignments are short writing assignments based on the readings and short quizzes every week. Easy to access outside for office hours and responds to emails in a timely manner. Overall easy class.
