He's far too theatrical and biased in his marking and treatment of students.
His intensity for teaching rubs off on all the students
Boourns to the first person commentating...Simpson is a great prof
i heart him
the best at uwo
best prof I have ever had
not going to lie to ya, he actually keeps you on the edge of your seat !
He is the reason that I chose to pursue studies in history.
One of the best professors that Western has.
Dr. Simpson is a great teacher, anyone who says differently doesn't attend class

Ruthless and brilliant, a classic super-villan (that's NOT a libelous coment)

Watch out for his multiple personalities ! :-)

creative, intelligent, thoughtful, inspires you to think!!!
Definitely an inspirational teacher. One of the best in the faculty.
Peacenik - heard he was originally a draft dodger, still best prof in 4 years. Did make me work. A little bit too excited by his topics.
Very passionate
An inspiration to all those around him. My old gym teacher still remembers him 30 years later--and Dr. Simpson still remembers his name!
Fun lectures, but not informative at all. A little aloof and pompous. "We will work hard, and it WILL be fun"
Unusually condescending in tutorials.
Problem is that he plays favourites. If you're one of them fine, otherwise you may as well not exist.
Very inspirational. Extremely helpful if you ask very compassionate by far the best history teacher in the dept.
I had this guy 25 years ago he remains an inspiration, one of those extraordinary people you never forget. an amazing man.
self-involved, ego-centric
Very difficult to follow. Dramatic.
great teacher. very enthusiastic and a lot of fun
One of the greatest professors, and men, that I have ever met. His knowledge is exceeded only by his passion for improving the minds of his students. He is truly a gift to the university
It's like you're watching a play in his class. Makes history come alive - but watch out, you won't be able to take very many notes with him. Make sure you read your text.
A truly great teacher. I had him in the early 80's and it was, as he was wont to say "pure gold."
Very intersting prof, and course material. However he's a bit of a jerk and unapproachable.
Keeps your attention in class. Interesting man.
very self-involved.
I had Craig as a prof in the mid-1980s and he changed my life. He was so inspirational, so passionate about history that I went on to become a prof myself. I must say that there is no one to whom I am more indebted. He's the best there is.
the best teacher i've ever had. One of the best, most influential people i've ever met
Absolutely phenomenal! Craig is an inspiration to both the students he teaches and the university at large. Truly a treasure! His passion for the subject is equaled only by his devotion to his students. Wow!
Life Changing prof. Cares about his students. Best grasp of vocab ever!
Aside from his passion and vocabulary, i admire his ability to shake the fear of god into slackers.
Best history professor at UWO. Passionate about what he teaches and very theatrical.
Second Year U.S. History - "Oh the mighty Shenandoah river...!" What an orator, his passion and insightfulness in class really painted a great picture of the time and change over time. wonderful and inspirational prof -really cares about his students as well.
the greatest professor at this university!!!
"Oh, Professor Simpson!" haha great teacher, everyone should experience one of his classes before they leave Western, there is NOTHING like it, i promise you.
Professor Simpson is simply awesome! And in a class of 150 ppl, he knows my name. I will miss his class so much next year. Very charismatic guy. Take his course, and you'll never skip his class.
Worst ever. Don't sit in the front row, the spittle that collects in the corners of his mouth will eventually fly off and hit you. It is a chore to go to a lecture where he tries to be epic. Be wary of those who adore him, it takes a special kind of person to tolerate his style.
Take HIS 234 just to see his African slave dance and to hear his closing remarks. Astounding.
Aren't there any 6 ratings I can give him?
Professor Simpson is absolutley incredible. I had his course 2 yrs ago and regret I have not had the privledge of having him again. Even still, I can remember word for word details of his lectures and how inspiring they were. Makes history come alive almost like "there is no time".he takes u ther
Professor Simpson is one of the most devoted, genuine and passionate professors whom I have ever encountered. Even while out of school, I keep in touch with him and talk politics. He takes great care and effort to know his students personally and giver their work the scrutiny and attention it deserves.
Difficult to follow, prvides numerous useless facts, i found him not very helpful, but others have said he was. Goave the two classes i had with him little meaning and difficult to get interested in. -- appears to either be a love hate teacher
I think your love for history will translate into how much you enjoy his teaching style. Yes, he does make history "come to life" in ways I've yet to see in other professors, but if you don't really like history, he may pass as pompous and over-the-top, and at the minimum, worth a good chuckle here and there. I do respect his passion, though.
Amazing! You gotta love him - so passionate about history. He is sometimes hard to follow if you haven't done your readings - but most definitely worthwhile to take a class of his if you get the chance!
Professor Simpson changed my life. Because of him I stayed in school. He is the most caring and passionate man I know. He makes effort to get to know everyone and is extremely knowledgable in his field. Everyone has to get to know him. Take his class!
Highest mark in class was 83, and about a third of the class failed. Funny at times, yet boring at the same time. You must really need to love American history to like this guy.
pure, rambling, boring, incoherence...how do people enjoy this guy?
He's too all over the place... Hard to follow, very unclear. I can't seem to take notes in his class. Despite that, he does seem to love the subject and tries to convey it to the students. But overall most Profs are like that and manage to actually convey a sense of structure and coherence. I'd say avoid the class... if you can.
Excellent professor - if you are willing to accept a challenging course. If you do not enjoy the class, it will largely be because you are not willing to put in the time required.
He is a very passionate and caring teacher. He loves his students and work. However, his lectures are completely off topic and do not make sense. He is everywhere and no where all at the same time. I don't reccomend his class.
He is an amacing prof! I have him for my tutorial instead of a TA, and he really makes history come alive. He really makes his students think! He is kind of crazy at times, but really entertaining during lecture.
There haven't been many times in my life when I've been speechless about something. But there are no words to describe the amazingness of this professor. He makes history come alive! I have him as my TA too, and he's just amazing! He's very friendly, and helpful! I'd recommend his class to anyone!
Amazing Prof. Best I have ever had. Makes you want to wake up and come to class even after a night out because he puts on a performance each time and makes learning come alive like you are at the theatre and not inside a classroom.
Changed my life. Still involves himself in my life. Always aware of my big moves. 4 years hence.

Epitomises that elusive species -- a fine academic who's also an excellent teacher. The world needs more Simpson!
Vastly overrated. A windbag of the first order. Why say in ten words what you can say in a thousand? Why be nice when you can seem nice?
Puts on a show sure, but he teaches nothing. I took his class to learn history, not to see a grown man do a funny dance on his desk. I would avoid him at ALL costs.
Make sure you get this guy before he's gone! So much energy, I really didn't have to go to lecture but did because he is better than television!
Outstanding...a scholar and a gentleman.
Simpson is a good professor. His exams were fair because he didn't try to over-extend the amount of time given to write an exam with too much jargon. Real cool prof if you have a chance to talk to him. He's really old school, but in a good way.
I waited two years to take this course and he made it worth the wait. If you don't like to participate and if you can't handle approx. 200 pages of reading a week and knowing your material, do not take this course. A fair (almost easy) marker who genuinely cares about his students. He gives two take home exams and one paper. An amazing man!
horrible, absolutely horrible. the most arrogant, ego centric man you will ever meet. puts on the most confusing, useless show you will ever see becuase he likes to hear his own voice...watch out for his spit, and his singing and dancing. just aweful
Amazing, an entertaining guy to say the least. But make sure to read the textbook when he lectures. It is often hard to follow but he is in entertaining and really makes you love history.
You can tell that he really cares about his subject, but he really needs to realize that caring and passion don't make good notes if half the lecture is whispered. Especially because half the class has to sit in the balcony. The best notes you can take are a random assortment of names and places that you have to google after class.
One of the best profs I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Extremely dedicated and helpful. Expectations are very high but you know them going in. Brutal when marking essays but if you accept his detailed critiques, you are are well prepared for further study in history. Work hard and you will succeed.
I had him for 234, 298, 344. A prof you can not miss if you care about American history. Simpson cares about each of his students and demands the best each day as he provides it himself for students. High demand credits NOT easy but very important best Prof I have ever had. Cant wait for the book he will have finished this month! I need more Simp!
Had him twice. He is very interesting and teaches people to think. He accepts all views and is a very fair marker. The only downside to his classes is that there is A LOT of reading. Overall, Great prof
I had him in the 1970's- thirty years ago . Craig simpson is one of the most inspirational mpeople I have ever known. I am a better person for having known C. Simpson
Good prof. Read and go to class and you're fine. Don't get caught unprepared and tell him if you're going to miss class. Fair essay marker, on average with others. Not a traditional history class, don't expect a linear line between 1935 and present day, examines present day issues.
A great professor. He genuinely cares about his students and his subject. I initially took his class by mistake, but he was interesting so I stuck with it; and I even ended up taking another class with him because I enjoyed his teaching so much. Not easy though, be prepared to THINK. Prof. Simpson will make you a better person.
Very passionate about material and makes it very interesting. In order to be successful in this course you must communicate with him in and out of class.
Teaches a 2nd year university class like story time at the YMCA. Wastes time. Spent entire lectures on teaching us the technique for picking cotton, the rules of basketball and why Rockefeller was great. Speaks too quietly and his overhead notes are a joke. Hand-written scribbles on a transparent, when every other prof has learned to use Powerpoint
This teacher is pathetic...the way he lectures in class makes it impossible to take notes. Funny how every other prof has learned to use PPT and he refuses to keep up with technology. Overall, if you have this prof for any course, I feel sorry for you. Personally, I was enthusiastic before I enrolled in the course but he totally ruined my interest.
If you enjoy professors who are passionate and committed to their teaching materials then Professor Simpson will make history an exciting subject for you to learn. Be prepared to do all the readings for this course, and to speak with him personally to understand his expectations. Overall engaging and respectable professor! I will miss this class.
Dr. Simpson is just a great guy. Does he use powerpoint? No. But if you need power point to pass then you deserve to fail. This man makes you think, loves what he teaches, and gives amazing LECTURES, in a true Harvardesque style. Awesome.
Immense amount of knowledge and truly passionate about teaching and assisting his students in making great career choices. Can speak a little quietly and occasionally his lectures are difficult to follow, but he is happy to answer questions and is very easy to talk to. Helpful hint: join history society, he'll love you
I found this class to be a total waste of time. He is full of knowledge and passion for american history, but is totally ineffective as a teacher. He makes notes impossible, but expects you to remember everything at the end of the semester. Avoid taking a class with this prof!
Waste of my time, had two classes with this guy and I might as well have taught myself. Yes he is passionate about his versions of history but so is my grandfather and I dont have to pay money to listen to him talk or watch him foam at the mouth. I found only the new age historians, who think it is awesome to listen to themselves talk, enjoyed him.
I love Prof. Simpson!! Every lecture he puts on is a show. I see what everyone is saying about it being hard to take notes, but seriously, are we here just to memorize verbatim what powerpoints tell us? Prof. Simpson analyzes the data from the text and presents arguments. Very entertaining and very clear about what he expects you to remember.
It's almost impossible to follow along with his lectures. While you can tell he's passionate, it's so difficult to hear him at times. It's very easy to get lost trying to follow along. Picks terms for the exam that he barely mentioned in lectures, which isn't really a fair judgement of learning. I wouldn't take a class with him again.
Lecutre were my favourite. Very challenging. Text book readings are HUGE and demand a lot. Easy essay marker. Extremely hard exam. Good prof who loves to teach and share his knowledge. One of my favourite profs thus far.
An inspiration to all those looking to pursue the study of history. Encourages critical thinking and represents the epitome of what university education should entail. Overall, a great man deserving and commanding of all of his students undivided attention.
Simply put; the best prof at UWO. He will work you, and you will learn such much for it. Even if the material seems old hat to you, the technical aspects of academia are a pet passion of his. One of the few profs who will always have an open door for his students.
Best professor I have ever had. Class was very difficult, and he is very intense (in a good way). Makes you really want to pay attention and do well. Isn't afraid to call you out on class readings, so make sure you are ready. Overall: BEST professor/man at western, a true beauty!
I studied with Simpson in the 70s--he changed my life, and I learned more than I could ever have imagined. Simply the most brilliant teacher in any subject on any college campus anywhere. A gifted scholar and a truly good, good man. Western's shining star.
This course really helps students in Political Science. Highly recommended. He is also hilarious, which helps :)
Simpson is an amazing professor. Probably one of the most engaging and interesting professors at ant university. The stories he tells are simply remarkable. Each class is spoken and not read from some notes. His general attitude towards the students and the subject matter make each class amazing. The only class I have never fallen asleep in.
absolute gem
Back when I (late 80's) I took his class, I did not appreciate Professor Simpson. In retrospect, though, I wish I had followed his advice (which would caused me to step out of my comfort zone--something I was not ready to do at the time). He is a person who is doing just what he was meant to do in life.
Simpson is an absolute gem. If you are not prepared to be worked, do not take his class. He comes from an age when students had to be intelligent, not the internet. Yes he doesn't use powerpoint, life doesn't have powerpoint kids
Old man that does not deal like slackers. Do your work or he'll put you in your place. Still an absolute beauty though and his charismatic personality makes lectures entertaining
Obviously passionate about the American Civil War, unfortunately, you can't remember any of his lectures because he moves very quickly through the material and its tough to write what he says down. Don't bother to take notes in his lecture, just do the textbook and tutorial readings. Come to lectures though, its amazing to listen to him.
Thirty five years since I took Professor Simpaon's American history course and he is the only Professor that to this day I still remember his name and some of his lectures. He was inspiring, funny, highly intelligent, and challenged you to think outside the box. And boy did he love his beloved Notre Dame football...The best teacher I have ever!!
He taught me in the 1970's when the lectures, research, writing and discourse were the entertainment. He nurtured a love of history and inspired a desire to become a better historian.
Took his classes back in the late 70's. By far the BEST university professor I ever had and one of the very few that bothered to actually teach! His passion was infectious and commitment to both his subject area and his students was limit-less. True, he didn't suffer fools gladly - why should he? Craig challenged your intellect and fed your soul!
Professor Simpson is very passionate about his subject. I had him as a tutorial leader too and he was very intense and made you think. Sometimes he was very intense, almost scary but he was also funny too. I liked his course, but if you are looking for a light and easy course, his is not the one to take. His exams are fair, but long.
Perhaps the most engaging prof I have ever come across. The material will drive opinions and you best have credible comments and educated opinions to contribute rather than reiterating facts. Not a history major.
The most amazing professor I EVER experienced at university! I had him more than 35 years ago. He was an incredible 'teacher', one of the few profs who actually 'taught'. PLUS he took a sincere interest in his students as people. True, he had no use for slackers but, it's better said that he forced us to be better than we thought possible. GREAT!
The best teacher I ever had in my life. It's been years, but I still think about him all the time.
Life changer I. Terms of learning to think critically and independently. A true historian.
6 years of taking history classes at main campus, King's and Huron...Professor Simpson was easily the greatest prof I had. He was passionate, caring and very willing to form working relationships with anyone who showed a serious level of interest and effort. It's been over 25 years since my time at UWO and he is my fondest faculty memory.
This is now 55 years ago. Prof Simpson is responsible for any critical thinking capability I have now. especially regarding current US politics and recent history. If I did any work or self-good at college it was from his teaching. The broad array of input combined with the goal of making one self-reliant was the basis. "wolf by the ears"
