I thought he was very helpful, very kind, and very open to students' suggestions. I don't understand why some dont like him.
Don't take him. He is super hard and your grade is based off 2 tests, the final and 2 assignments. Which he doesn't return until 3 months after you turn it in. He is super boring! But he is willing to listen to what you have to say, and does take your opinions seriously. He is a nice guy, he just can't teach.
Very good guy and is very good on keeping students up to date on when the material is due. Tests are confusing, but are all multiple choice. Wasn't the easiest class only because your grade is based off of 3 tests which aren't curved...
Upright is a super nice guy and one of the very few teachers that is willing to take feedback from his students and adapt his teaching accordingly. The class is based on only 100 points; 3 tests and 2 assignments, but he is a fair grader and extremely approachable and accommodating. I think the students that grade him poorly simply did not study.
Professor Upright is very knowledgeable in Sociology. He is a great professor, however he does expect students to have a "higher" learning perspective when coming to class. He can talk about ideas that seem overwhelming at times but He does listen to his students ,so don't be scared to speak up in class if you are confused or have a question
Really helpful teacher! He is open to listening to feedback from students to see what he needs to work on to become a better teacher. One of the most helpful teachers I've ever had and really works hard to help his students out! He does take attendance but if you e-mail ahead of time with any excuse then he excusses your absence. Great teacher!
Overall a pretty good professor. He is willing to listen to student feedback, and actually takes it into account. After our first test he listened to our suggestions and made the tests more clear and understandable. There is a fair amount of reading for the class, but his lectures are interesting.
Professor Upright was great! He's super nice and listens to what you have to say on any subject and talks with you like you're an equal. The topics discussed were mind boggling at times but that's what made it interesting and that's what sociology is, looking from a different perspective. I enjoyed his class very much!
Professor Upright's class required a lot of reading but if you do the reading you'll be just fine! And he's a really nice guy! He is very open to everyone's opinions and he is always willing to help and clarify any questions that you might have. Quizzes on your own time and tests are on d2l. I would recommend him, he's really helpful and nice!
You will have to read a long chapter from the textbook every week along with two longer articles. He puts quizzes online from every chapter that you can take up to 5 times. It?s probably about 5 hours of work a week, but do it and you will be able to get an A. He is a good and interesting professor; you will not fall asleep during his lectures!
Dr Upright is a really nice professor, with alot of knowledge. Though sociology was at first hard to understand, he adjusted his teaching methods to the classes needs and made his lecture and tests alot more easier to understand. He made most of the lectures interesting and we watched videos, listened to radio clips, ate cake, and even watched SNL!
I do not recommend this professor.
I took Professor Upright last semester and could not have been more pleased with him. He expects you to read, which is what all professors should expect. He is willing to explain anything and everything. Loved him!
This class seems pretty hard, but I slid by with an easy A and I never got higher than a C on the tests. The tests are hard because he doesn't use everyday language, but if you address that he will definitely help. He also cancels class..a lot.
Nicest professor I have ever had. He is so willing to listen, and really cares about you as a student, if you get a chance, definitely take him. He makes class very enjoyable, and is a great person.
Such a great professor. Very nice and willing to help with anything.
Wonderful Professor. Very helpful, and if people aren't getting it he changes how he does the test. Very understanding and willing to compromise. I learned a lot in his sociology class. VERY recommended.
He was very unprepared for class and has a terrible teaching style. He assigns 4 readings for each class and assigns papers on some of the readings, which he does not grade or return until after the class is over. His tests are pointless recall questions and is not a very helpful teacher
The class consisted of weekly readings and quizzes then four tests. The class was simple to understand and was well organized. I recommend this professor because he is extremely helpful in class and outside of class.
He is a great professor that knows a lot about his subject. He is willing to do anything to help you succeed, great professor overall.
Very personable professor and makes the class enjoyable to attend. Sometimes he gets off topic, but it gives a nice break to the long lectures. He is very flexible with students as far as meeting in office hours, adjusting assignments, etc. The assignments and tests are relatively simple if you do all of the readings and take good notes. Fun class!
Upright is really helpful. He's understanding and keep the class interesting. Take notes off the presentation, always do the chapter quizzes out of class and attend and you'll do great. Tests are not bad if you study.
Great class and great teacher, such a character in class. Definitely recommend this teacher for any type of sociology class.
Very nice professor, knows what he is talking about and wants you to do well in his class. A little unorganized and times and slow on grading things sometimes. Very willing to help you.A good amount of outside readings.
Really great professor, understands his students very well and teaches accordingly. Look forward to going to his class because each class is very interesting. Not necessarily the easiest professor, but personally, my favorite professor at Winona.
Not exteremely hard if you're prepared before class. Read what he tells you to read. Pretty funny guy, and super nice and easy to talk to.
This class is balanced well, it does not over weight tests. I got no A's on my tests and only 2 b's but with working hard on the other class work still managed an A. Very good professor and wants the students to succeed, also understands that sociology can be dry at times. Does his best to make class enjoyable. Highly recommend him.
Upright was always willing to help if you needed it. Tests are basically form the notes and some questions he will take straight off the quizzes. I would take him! The only downfall is that he is a VERY slow grader but his niceness makes up for it!
Upright is an awesome professor that knows his stuff and makes class interesting. He's good at paying attention to his classes and students and tries really hard to get to each and every one of us, which is very much appreciated.
Great professor, teaches the subject very well. Easy quizzes once a week and tests are easy as long as you read the text and pay attention in class. Only other assignment is presenting a chapter to a group of 6ish people once during the semester. Warning: If you stand out to him in class he will notice all that you do the whole rest of thesemester.
Professor Upright is a little quirky, but I think thats what makes his class interesting. He is very thorough and he lets you take quizzes on each chapter up to five times so it is impossible to get anything but 100%. He is a great teacher!
The class may seem hard in the beginning, but if you go through his power points on D2l and read the chapters before a test, you will do just fine. Pay attention to the readings/discussions from class because he will put short answer questions on the test from those. He is so nice and makes class enjoyable. TAKE THIS CLASS! you won't regret it.
He goes off topic frequently and is always behind on the syllabus. But, he is flexible and easy going. His attendance policy seems harsh but its not. All you need to do is let him know why you missed.
He cares a lot about his students, but he does appreciate you a lot more if you go to his office hours.
Professor Upright is one of my favorite professors at Winona State. He cares a tremendous amount for his students, he even tries to learn everyone's name in a classroom of about 50 students. He is pretty slow with grading, but overall he a great professor and well worth taking his class.
Professor Upright is EASILY one of my favorite professors here. He's passionate about what he teaches, I haven't missed a class just because I'm interested to hear more. His attendance policy is pretty much if you miss, just send an email saying you missed. If you don't finish the readings it's not bad because he goes over most of it in class.
LOVE this professor!! He makes you think critically about life in general. I had him for intro to sociology and it was easily my favorite class. Great guy and adds some humor to lectures!
I have never met a more likable professor. Extremely focused on giving his students a quality education, and does a tremendous job at doing so. Cracks jokes, includes video clips, and really brings out the intellectual in you. Loved the class, and so did he. Grades both participation and attendance.
Upright is a teacher who genuinely cares for students. He often gives readings that you will have to read to pass the class, but they are not that bad. There is always a group discussion and you will have to talk. However, don't be discouraged about this. If you say something wrong he will phrase a correction that's nice and limits embarassment
Upright was a great professor. He made the content interesting for people who aren't necessarily interested in sociology. He's very reasonable with his students and what he expects of them. Do the reading, participate here and there and you'll pass easily.
Upright was a great professor. He had everything prepared and organized. He was very helpful whenever anything came up and was always available to answer questions. I would 100% recommend him to anyone.
Would Recommend to anyone. He is a great professor, very passionate about what he is teaching and his lectures are interesting. Use the study materials he posts on D2L and you will do well.
Upright is extremely helpful. He seems to be very aware of the fact that every student learns differently, and he gives everyone so many resources to succeed. The class itself was extremely easy and very interesting to begin with, and having him as a prof made it so much better.
Okay here's the deal. I CANNOT think of a better sociology professor that is NOT Craig Upright. I find sociology a confusing subject, but Craig makes it so simple and easy. He applies it to our daily lives. He is not a tough grader, he is VERY understanding. And he's hilarious. Take him! you won't regret it
I love Upright and at the same time he drives me crazy. He takes FOREVER to grade things. He is also unclear about objectives for test material at times. But, he is absolutely hilarious, he makes sociology somewhat interesting, and he genuinely wants everyone to do well. Over all for an intro class he is good.
He takes a while to grade BUT he is an awesome teacher. He is very upfront with how to succeed in his class! The quizzes you take at home and can be taken as many times as you want. There are 3 tests and the last 2 are partner tests. No cumulative final. He is hilarious and really cares about his students- I LOVED HIM.
Amazing professor. I search for his classes when I register now
His classes are somewhat enjoyable, he lectures a lot but they aren't terrible. He's very energetic and loves what he does. Tests aren't too bad, read and pay attention and think about it in context of use in the real world and you'll be okay. Not a bad choice.
There aren't really bad professors in the SOC department, but Dr. Upright really stands out. He wants nothing more than the intellectual growth of his students and is a very flexible and helpful instructor. He is obviously well educated in his field and lectures very naturally. Plus he was always conscious of not giving us too much work to complete
Definitely a little awkward but he makes up for it in his genuine compassion for students and his work with them. You can tell in class and out he's a pretty great guy. Be prepared for a lot of note-taking though.
craig is dope
Professor Upright was an amazing professor. I learned so much from him and he genuinely cares about his students. He goes out of his way to learn everyone's names and then continues to get to know you! I loved his lectures and going to class was actually enjoyable. I would highly recommend him to anyone excited about sociology!
Would definitely recommend again! Hes so funny and is super willing to make time to meet with you after class.
He really cares about the class. He asked for our feedback often and changed the course schedule to work better for the students. A little absent minded and a slow grader. Enjoyed his lectures.
Respected and very knowledgeable, convinced me to consider minoring in Sociology. 10/10 would recommend.
Upright is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares about his students and wants to help them succeed. He's super approachable and easy to get along with. Good sense of humor too. Upright knows his stuff, and always has interesting stories/examples to help you better understand the material. Definitely would recommend
Best professor I've ever had, you will NOT regret taking him for sociology. He has few assignments and there is hardly ever homework. He prepares us very well for exams, which are fairly easy. His lectures are awesome and he really has a fun class environment. He is really funny and knows everyone's name which I love. Would highly recommend him!
I love Upright but he is one of the most frustrating people I had to deal with at school. He doesn't put grades in until the very last minute and though he says you can miss class as long as you email him, it does affect your participation grade if you do. Great guy but if you have little patience like me, it may not be the best choice
This professor is literally the BEST professor i have ever met! He is super friendly, he spent the first two days getting to know everyone personally by shaking their hand and asking questions about who they are. He was kind, funny, and he knew how to create a truely thought provoking class. For new students, i reccomend paying attention, good luck
Upright is one of the best professor's I have had. I had to take this class as a freshman for the nursing program and he made it enjoyable and easy. The quizzes can be taken as many times as you want, the reading is easy, and the tests are exactly like the outlines he puts online. Participation will make or break your grade, go to open office hours
I would not recommend taking this class with this professor, because 1) he doesn't put in grades until he finds it necessary, 2) he tries to emulate a persona of a naive professor but he's very condescending in doing so, 3) he likes to entertain the class at the expense of students by belittling them.
If you email him before a class you're not going to be at he won't take any points away. Powerpoints are posted on D2l, there are a few readings. Honestly, I studied for his exams completely off of the quizzes on D2l and I did really well on all the exams. His lectures are kind of interesting but in my opinion, going to class wont make a difference
We had 3 exams, the first one you take alone and the rest of the exams, if you don't miss more than 1 class period between exams, can be taken with a partner. The quizzes can be taken an unlimited amount of times. Just email him if you are going to miss a class or you will lose 5% of your grade. Downside- he took a long time to grade things.
Upright is awesome. He really really cares about his students, and cares about how he teaches us. I often left class with a new perspective on life and he really made me think, which makes the class enjoyable. Take him if you can, its very doable!
Really nice guy, and knows what he's teaching and really wants to get to know his students. Insanely slow grader but will give you chances to fix mistakes he makes. Make sure you go to class, you can take the last 2 exams with a partner if you don't miss class. He is more than willing to accommodate any student who needs help or has a concern.
Professor Upright is great. Attendance does matter and it is a part of your grade. Participation also matters so speak up every now and then and give your opinion. The textbook he says is mandatory but it really isnt. I read it the first half of the semester but not the last and I still got a A no problem.
Genuinely cares about his students and their experiences in his class. Very flexible as long as you communicate with him. Listens to feedback and does his best to meet everyones needs. Also is very interesting to listen to as well as a good sense of humor.
Throughout the semester, Dr. Upright gave lots of good lectures, but he had a bad habit of getting his own opinion in the way when talking about controversial topics. It's a tough class that takes lots of studying, but I found the material interesting. The textbook is mandatory I don't think I could've passed if I didn't read the textbook.
Upright is a very nice guy and will do whatever he can to help his students - he makes it clear from the start that if you have any concerns he will help as best as he can. Although he may get sidetracked sometimes and take a while to grade tests, he is super nice and teaches very well (not a lot of hw either) - interesting class! I recommend him!
Upright is a very good Professor. He keeps the content interesting and applies class material to real life. There is a lot of lectures, but he allows discussions. He is a very understanding professor! For my class it took him a long time to grade.
Very fun guy! Very caring and understanding about student's circumstances. Explain things well and used real-life examples. He had a lot of very interesting points that made people stay engaged in the lectures. Loved to see kids succeed in his class and he was always open for help.
Craig makes his lectures fun and brings good examples in. It's a fairly easy class, you take 3 exams the whole semester(1 of which is the final) and he even let us take it with a partner. He is one of my favorite professors, if I ever end up doing a sociology major or minor it's because of Craig.
Professor Upright is the best professor Ive had so far. He is extremely understanding and wants students to succeed. His lectures are interesting and engaging. If you actually do the work and read the textbook in this class, you will do just fine. I would recommend this class, and especially Professor Upright, to anyone at WSU.
Prof. Upright is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. He is very passionate about sociology and cares about his students. He is very easy to talk to and is a very chill guy.
Love this professor but content is a little complicated. Make sure to know vocabulary terms as there are a lot on exams. Slow grader but is very practical and understanding..
You can tell how much he loves teaching which makes the class 100% better. Interesting lectures and very personable. Very caring and accommodating- wants his students to enjoy this subject. This class made me want to add a sociology minor. Clear grading criteria and easy quizzes that you can take unlimited times.
Professor Upright definitely cares about his students. Although attendance is mandatory, he is very understanding if you have to miss class as long as you are honest. Lectures are interesting and personable. He makes you feel like you actually matter to him as a student. Tests seem hard but are really easy once you get used to them.
He is truly one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes his lectures interesting to listen to by telling stories from his own life and relating the material to real world events. He is extremely understanding, so although some of his rules seem strict, but as long as you contact him with an explanation, theres nothing to worry about.
He and his class were enjoyable and entertaining. While Ive never been a fan of college lectures, his were probably the best Ive had so far. The class can be difficult but he provides all the information and materials needed to get an A.
Upright is one of the most understanding professors. Don't be scared away from the email he sends out before the semester...he just likes to have people that care about his class. His lectures are so interesting and he gives you all of the tools you need to succeed. Upright is my favorite professor of all time, I appreciate him so much!
Prof. Upright is passionate about what he teaches and really cares about his students. the first test was very hard the other 2 were easier, you get to use a partner if you've missed 1 or less days. some of the readings are hard but not terrible. you will have 3 reflection memos that kinda suck but overall it was an average class. super nice guy.
he's an ok teacher, just get ready to have nothing graded ever. I emailed him, he ignored me every time.
DOES NOT GRADE A SINGLE THING! Prioritizes everything else other than grading and doing his job as a professor. He will not email you back ever, still haven't got emailed back from the email I sent back in January. January 11 to be exact and it is now April 3.
Dr Upright is amazing, he cares so much about his students and want everyone to pass with an A. He gives 2 quizzes per exam in which you can take as many times as you want to receive an A. All his lectures are based on the reading so read your textbook and you will be set!! Spend time studying and you will do great! Dr Upright is wonderful!
Upright is a good teacher, if you read before lecture his class will go smoothly, he had about 3 exams one you will take by yourself and the last 2 you get to take with a class mate of your choice!! Which was nice and helped my grade a lot if you aren't good at tests! He cares about his students and wants them to pass, he's good at communicating!
Professor Upright is a really funny professor who takes in his students best interests. But he is a slow grader, very slow. But he is still a pretty good professor who treats you like a human.
Professor Upright is one of the best professors I have had at Winona so far. He cares about his students and wants to do whatever he can to help you succeed. Do not be afraid to ask him for help or to reach out if you are struggling with the content. Make sure to read before class preferably with a partner because discussion is important.
I liked him as a person, but he took all semester to grade our first assignment. So I had no idea where my grade stood other than the first exams multiple choice that I failed. He made so many empty promises it got old and you couldn't count on his word for anything. Very lecture heavy. Some fun stories, but sometimes boring.
Get ready to have absolutely nothing graded. Never know where you are at in the class. Promises to grade things but never goes through with the promises.
You won't receive a grade or feedback on assignments until the last 2 weeks of the semester. He spoke about his students procrastinating, yet he took 2 months to grade our first assignment. We are not allowed to record lectures, lecture slides aren't available before class, MUST take notes in a notebook. No electronics allowed. wouldn't recommend.
You'll wait all semester to get your stuff graded. Empty promises. Lectures could be very interesting but doesn't really cover anything about the exams in class. You have to read the textbook. Electronics not allowed. Attendance mandatory but very understanding if needing to miss for a reason.
Upright is a great professor and person. Don't worry about his attendance policy. You just have to let him know if you're going to be absent and it'll be excused. He gives extra credit opportunities and tests aren't that difficult as long as you study. Read the textbook before class. Only issue is that he's a slow grader and makes empty promises.
I loved this class and professor Upright. I did not do great on the first exam and he reached out to me personally and was willing to help in any way that I needed, I still passed the course with an A. He has been my favorite professor so far because he truly cares about students and their lives and understands that we are busy outside of class.
He gives lots of examples in his lectures which I found very useful. He relates his lectures to the book which I found helpful. I also found it helpful to use the book definitions for vocab words rather than his lecture definitions, the exam has the book definitions. He genuinely cares about you and your grade, he is my favorite professor at WSU.
Great prof, very lecture heavy class. If you're ever confused he's always happy to help
Lectures are very interesting, and he is great at engaging with the class. He's always willing to help you, and you can tell he wants to to succeed. Only complaint is that he takes FOREVER to grade things. There is only one week of classes left and I still don't really know what my grade is. None of the exams have been completely graded.
He is good but you will need to do a lot of learning outside of class by reading the textbook. Each chapter is like 60 pages and he will pull the most random parts from it and put it on quizzes and exams. Other than that the only bad thing i have to say about him is that he takes FOREVER to grade.
Upright is a nice guy, and he is very understanding when it comes to his students. You REALLY need to read the textbook to do well on his tests. The tests go off of examples from the textbook. The class is good the only bad thing is that he does not grade any of the tests until the last week of the semester.
Upright is bad. He takes forever to grade and does not keep his promises about when they will be graded. He waited until 26 minutes before they were due to the Registrars office before we knew our grade. The written portion was not graded for months at a time. This class is book heavy but easy as long as you pay attention. Attendance mandatory.
what I will say about upright is he is a very kind guy who wants to help his students. this sadly caused him to not grade anything for the entire semester and we didnt know our final grade till minutes before they were due. while he stresses the need of the textbook I passed this class without reading it, listen to what he says during his lectures
This is my third class with Prof. Upright. I absolutely love the guy. He is incredibly understanding if you need extensions. Yes, attendance is mandatory but he will excuse absences with good reasons. His only real flaw is late grading, but he drops assignments because of this. Passionate liberal but it is assumed due to his field.
Actually an amazing professor. I would say to definitely read before class and take notes especially on vocab so you can listen during the lectures. He attempts to relate lectures to things that involve students. Very very slow grader but will admit to that.
Professor Upright's lectures are engaging, but be prepared to do a lot of independent learning from the textbook. The exams can be tricky, so using resources like Unstuck study for study prep really helps. Just stay on top of the work and attendance, and you'll do well.
Professor Upright is a funny guy, makes lectures very enjoyable and relates a lot of topics to students to help u understand the concepts more. Definitely read the textbook assignments before class as it WILL help you do better on the tests and so you understand the lecture a bit better. He is horribly slow at grading which he admits to
One of the most genuine and caring professors. He goes above and beyond to show he cares and truly wants a relationship with all students. Exams can be tough but read the book and know the study guide. Homework was easy it wasnt graded on being correct but more so on completion. Build a relationship with him as it will go a long way.
Show up actually willing to engage and having done the work and you'll do great. Amazing at explaining concepts, and most grades are more about those concepts than names or dates. Also, he's woke, but so am I so it made the class better. You literally only need a good attitude and a little confidence to speak up to do well in this class.
If you can take a class with this professor, do it! He is truly so kind and actually cares about his students it shows. I have absolutely nothing negative to say and it was a class I enjoyed attending. Attendance is mandatory, but as long as you let him know you will not be there and give a reason everything will be okay.
upright is okay, his lectures are boring, and he is a very slow grader. attendance is mandatory but if you tell him you will be gone it doesn't count against your grade. you NEED to read the textbook. exams are very hard. he is willing to help you though.
Professor Upright is amazing. He is so funny and actually makes lectures engaging. He is behind on grading which can be difficult but there is not a ton of assignments. Class is mandatory and he has a really strict attendance policy as long as you email him before class it will be excused. He also does partner exams for 2/3 which is really nice.
Professor Upright is knowledgeable in his area of work. Sometimes that knowledge is to advanced for us to understand so ask for clarification when necessary. Read the textbook it is the only thing that will get you through this course.
I couldn't recommend Prof. Upright enough! His lectures are witty and engaging, and his intelligence really shines through as he pulls in examples to help you understand. He takes so much time to make sure his students are doing well and is quick to help in any way he can if you are in need of guidance!
He is a great professor, he really cares about his students. Up until the final exam I had a C to which he pointed that out to me. But what he said was the truth and I made an effort to get it up. Definitely read the textbook, I didn't... Sometimes lecture was a bit boring but could also be very interesting.
He is such an amazing helpful teacher who always wants to see his students thrive. He is an incredibly slow grader, but he tries his best and asks for patience. He is always accessible and very welcoming. He makes sure the textbook is relevant and is accessible if unaffordable. He doesn't allow for laptops or tablets but he's still a great teacher.
