blahhh
This man's more boring than an Al Gore interview. He's quite peculiar looking.
BORING AS HELL, I couldn't even go to lecture.
Always late to class, and he wasn't even very helpful.
Three midterms . I ACED every one (one perfect). average of them was in the 50%'s. Then was unfair and made final too hard. got a D. Ended class with a B because of NO CURVE. He failed over half the class. I deserved an A, others deserved to pass!
Unclear in his teachings and hardly showed any care in student's progress.
I think he is great, his tests were not that hard, and though he might seem booring, his lectures do give out really good ideas that saves you a bunch of time if you apply it to homework and tests.
Absolute worst Math teacher ever! Both times I've had him are the two worst grades I have ever gotten in Math. He strays from the book, is boring as hell, and comes to class late. Unless you are forced to take his class, DON'T!!!
It's a hard class, no curve. Unless ur really good with the material, don't take this class. It's hard to get an A.
The subject matter is quite difficult, but he makes it relatively clear. His style and notation differs from that in the book, but he still assigns book problems that are often too tough to handle. Very easy to mess up on the 2 midterms. Unfortunately, he doesn't curve. Good luck getting an A.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Gave no curve in the class where a large number were failing. Gave almost no examples in class. This combined with his lectures being completely different from the book both in notation and content made homeworks impossible. Very condescending and degrading to students
I thought his explanations were clear and his presentation methodical. He was helpful outside of class as well. His grading is unforgiving and somewhat harsh, but at least it was consistent with everyone. I would take him again.
That dude sucked. He looks like Agent Smith from the Matrix. Always good for a linear algebra guy. I always wanted him to say Mr Anderson but he never did... DON'T TAKE HIM!!!! Oh, he used the exact tests from previous years.
I didn't think the guy was that bad. He is a little boring. Although, he does crack the occasional joke (albeit dry humor). His curve is minimal at best. For example, the cutoff for an A is 92 or something like that. But, you can do much worse than Prof. Ogle (see Dynin, Alexander) for math.
This is a difficult class compounded by an overly difficult teacher. Lessons are convoluted and they stray from the book heavily. DO NOT TAKE CLASS FROM THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU ARE AN ENGINEER!!! This class has absolutely no relevance to engineering after the 2nd chapter.

He presented the material well and was alway willing to help. However he is a very hard grader.
Drop now, you pour soul. The homework is ridiculously time consuming, and the exam is too long for the time allotted. Uses a notation that is different from the book -- his notation makes more sense, but this will only confuse you more on hw. Doesn't seem to care if half the class fails. Stops lecture when he feels like it (25 after sometimes).
This class can be hard or easy...he made it ridiculously hard. Assigned at least 15 problems every week that had 2-5 parts to them so they took forever to do. Will not help with homework and won't even give answers AFTER you've turned it in. If the class does well on the first exam, he just makes the next one harder...take someone else!
Hard to say whether or not he's a good teacher. Some days he's really nice and other days he bites your head off. Assigns a lot of homework and tries hard not to answer any homework questions directly, although he's fine with lecture questions. Tries to make the class hard when people are doing really well. He seems like a nice guy, but isn't easy.
Terrible teacher. He won't help you at all when you ask him a question. Does not always seem like he knows what he is talking about. He works half way through the proof than has to erase it because he did it wrong. If you can, drop him immediately and get another professor.
I had a mixed experience. I wasn't really a fan of him originally because the class is so hard and he is sometimes confusing. What's good about him though is that he really does want his students to succeed. If you email him asking for help, he will be very good about helping in class or his office hours. He understands that the class is hard.
He often spoke over our heads and seemed to take pleasure in doing so. Most of us got 5's on the AP Calc class but you wouldn't know it by our grades. He was available to "answer" questions, but made the material more confusing. He knows that the class is really difficult, so as long as you get at least 50%. you'l probably escape with a C.
Decent teacher, teaches alot of theories, and little examples. Test are rather simple. Very monotonic in his lectures.
Very bad teacher ! Please dont take him....he's not helpful and takes pleasure in failing students.
Boring, Late to Class, ridiculous amounts of homework.40 problems a week from 5 sections, thats at least 1 section a night, thanks for wasting every waking moment of my free time.
Late to Class, assigned overzealous amounts of homework combined with a lack of teaching makes him the worst teacher I have ever seen. Avoid taking his class at all costs.
Tough Teacher. Definitely knows what he is teaching, has an incredible ability to reason through extremely complicated concepts. If you go to class and really try and learn what he is saying, the class will be fine. That being said, probably better off with another teacher. Ogle is pretty tough.
he does not explain anything at a student's level of understanding. Very intelligent but do NOT take him especially if you are taking calculus for the first time. He wastes time going into irrelevent details and by no means prepares students for the standardized final.
He's good. Very clear and _professional_. One problem is that his explanations become complicated for the sake of clarity. Somewhat dubious relation to engineering after the first chapter, but the class is still very interesting. Homework assignments are long, especially in the beginning, and exams are a time crunch. Very difficult, but good class.
I thought this class was easy. He gave bonus exercises, which really helped a lot. Even with that, there was still a big curve. The only thing that sucked was that his tests usually had one question that involved definitions.
Lots of examples and good explaination....tests were hard though
Difficult but fair professor. I'm a fairly good student and I got a B, but I learned a ton of linear algebra. Uses notation different than the book, so attendance is pretty critical. As commented, earlier tests are about speed the final is very cumulative. Tests were true to the (long) homeworks. No major surprises.
Very good teacher. Good at explaining all topics. Overall a very smart guy. I would definitely suggest him.
Clear and was able to explain topics well. Also very boring and tests were tough. Doesn't do very many examples so unless you have a good TA (I didn't) you'll be teaching yourself a lot of the material.
VERY hard exams.....class averages were usually around a 50...sometimes lower, one time higher... Unfair for the most part (coming from a student who had a 4.1 in high school)
Assigns a lot of homework. Tests are tough. However, he explains topics very well. He's very "to the point". Overall, he's a good teacher. Do the homework, and study hard for tests and you'll be fine.
This is the most difficult math class I have ever taken. The exams are not difficult, however there is not enough time to solve every question and then check your answers. Never say "like", it is sandpaper to his ears.
This professor makes Linear "Algebra" more complicated than it needs to be and goes over the materials too fast. I won't recommend taking him.
Took him in the summer for 571. Very, very difficult class. Moved extremely quickly. Graded very strict. Little partial credit on exams. The pace of the class made it considerably more difficult than it should have been, and it was not helped by his teaching style.
This professor is just so-so. His writing on the board makes me hard to identify. His class is kind of boring, but he sometimes gets a little funny too.(Just A LITTLE!) So I suggest you that if you don't want to go to his class, just read the book and maybe you can get an A(MAYBE!).
Awful
He gives alot of words and not alot of examples. He is an alright professor. If you can change the way you learn math, he'd be a great professor.
He's an interesting teacher. Interesting in the way that I cannot describe him. He does have some unfair grading (i.e. little partial credit on exams) and his lecture is hard to follow. It is a bunch of words, theorems, and definitions. But overall, it isn't too terrible, if you have a good TA.
His lecture does match with his extremely difficult exam!!!
does not teach well only uses theorems and definitions to teach however does not back it up with examples. find another teacher if you can prepare to fail final exam
Doesn't give a lot of examples in class. Monotonous voice. I had to rely on my TA A LOT.
The only good thing about his lecture was that it will put you to sleep. He uses big words and tries to make himself sound smart, rather than teach. I went to him for help once and he made me feel like an idiot. It is possible to do decent in his class if you took Calculus in high school but I would NOT RECOMMEND this guy at all.
A really nice professor! I love his lecture. he is so smart and lecture was very informative.
He really knows his stuff but this class is super hard esp because of the midterms and final. Do the hw and ask as many questions as you can. if you dont procrastinate too much then you should walk out with a B or so.
Some exams were impossible for me because I had never taken calculus and it didn't click until halfway into the course(retook it and got a B because I never went to class because I thought I knew the material already)Departmental exam difficulty wasn't his fault, but him showing up in the last 5 minutes of his office hours just to shirk me off was.
He was very helpful if you went to his office hours. Also his classes encouraged participation, which in a math course, is very rare.
Very difficult but you will really understand linear algebra if you can keep up.
He's the realist og I know
Only uses theorems and variables to teach his class. Gives really easy examples during lecture and puts the most difficult ones on the exam, would not recommend taking him unless you have a lot of experience in calculus already
Lectures were nearly pointless and I learned very little from them. Strongly recommend doing practice problems. Midterms are very difficult, but department makes them so he really can't be blamed.
Lecture is completely useless. Go to recitation, write down all the practice problems, do the odds in the back of each section you learn, get help with ones you can't figure out from your recitation teacher, and you will ace every midterm. I guarantee if you put the effort in, you'll do great. Really not a difficult class, way overrated.
He has a very dry sense of humor but is actually extremely funny. Once you get used to how he teaches you will find the class very easy. He doesn't show much emotion but he loves mathematics. If you saw him outside of the classroom and didn't know him you would think he was mad at the world. Good teacher and the tests are exactly how he teaches.
Very monotone. He is an OK lecturer and tries to inspire class participation, but many of his explanations in lecture are abstract versus concrete examples.
He always seemed annoyed with students. He didn't seem to handle questions well and was unhelpful preparing for exams. His version of review is basically reading the text book to the class.
Fast paced (summer) class. It get really tough if you get even a day behind, but if something's not making sense he's able to explain it in a different way that it'll make sense to you either after class or in office hours (someone's always at his office hours). The grader's cool, too (though I don't know if this changes every term).
Continuously rambles through class, with a monotone demeanor. Tries to lighten up class with dry humor and overcomplicated math puns. Does a poor job of relaying examples to students and continuously goes against his own grading scale. I highly advise you not to take Dr. Ogle's class.
Lectures were very boring and difficult to keep attention during. Sometimes lectures were useful, but usually he covered only the easiest of the material that most of the class already knew.
Absolutely horrid. He assumes you know the material very well and does not explain all of the steps he takes. He is also very boring and monotoned.
Awful professor. Gives you a condescending look for every question you ask or wrong answer you give in class. Learned nothing in lecture, had to rely completely on the book and homeworks to learn the material.
SWITCH OUT OF HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS IF YOU CAN. this guy is the absolute worst! This class is hard enough without him being an awful professor. Time consuming/impossible HW's and boring abstract lectures that leave you more confused then you were. Take someone else if you want your sanity.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. DOES MORE DEFINITIONS THAN EXAMPLES IN CLASS. TALKS RANDOMLY MORE THAN HE TEACHES. ASSIGNS A BUNCH OF HOMEWORK BOOK PROBLEMS BUT ONLY GRADES 4 QUESTIONS PER HOMEWORK. EXAMS ARE IMPOSSIBLE. HE BARELY CURVES FINAL GRADES. OFFICE HOURS ARE USELESS, BECAUSE HE MAKES THE MATERIAL EVEN MORE CONFUSING. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS !!!!
If you take his summer Linear Algebra class, you WILL learn the material. His lectures are very participatory in that he expects students to be able to complete his sentences. Many times it's easy to do if you're paying attention. Sometimes not. His lectures are like having a textbook read aloud. He is very precise and specific. He's good but hard.
2 weeks in and I dropped it as fast as I could. He will never answer your email- so don't even try ask him about office hours. When you finally get to office hours he tries to rush you out of there asap. Lastly, if you're a girl- good luck! Get ready to be ignored & undervalued compared to the rest of the boys in your class. Find a different prof!
The course is tough but he makes the class harder than it needs to be. He moved extremely fast through the material and most lectures were confusing. Would often show up 30 or more minutes late to his office hours, and even then those weren't very helpful. He once yelled at me for not knowing something I had never seen before. Don't take him.
Crichton lacks respect for students and the teaching process in general. He will boil in frustration when you struggle. He will blame you for your bad note taking, attendance, heritage, ignorance, etc. At no point will it occur to him that he is a bad teacher. Crichton, if you are reading this, please consider another profession.
This class was the bane of my existence. I was a math major at the time (haha) and to be honest I learned a ton of great stuff but and am thankful I took it but the homework is absurd in difficulty and time consumption. The teacher is brilliant and does try to share his knowledge but he's not very good at actually teaching and helping the student
This Teacher is not someone you should take if you are a student that depends on lectures. If you are good at reading the book and learning then its best not to attend class as he is extremely confusing and goes off-topic quite often. Overall he doesn't care about his students grades, and best if you take another teacher.
This teacher totally have no idea how to arrange the homework and test. I took his math2568 in Summer and we have to do at least 30 problems per week and we even have to hand in it in midterm week. The exam was not too hard but it's super time-consuming. He talked a lot of theories in the class but get lot of impossible matrix transform problem .
He has to be the most condescending professor I've ever had. He will interrupt you when you're trying to ask questions, and always has to be the loudest. He thinks you should just "get it" right away, it should be easy, when in fact he's just blabbering straight theory at you the whole class, and he wonders why no one gets it. NOT RECOMMENDED!
I can tell that he professor is very intelligent, but he is kind of old school. There are a lot of homework, but you should expect that for a math course. The exam is not tough, and the grader is cool, but the average is a low 60. The lecture is not that useful, and you will definitely need to read the book. Otherwise you will not get the concept.
Tough grader who did not willing to give partial credit!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR'S CLASS
Tons of homework. Tough exams. No curve.
I had him for 2568. Tough class, even tougher grader. However, I found that even though he wasn't the nicest professor, he pushed me to be better. He emphasizes knowing your definitions, which is crucial for beginners in proofs. His lectures are cool. Good stories, really insightful. This professor changed the way I think about a lot of things.
He has great lectures where he clearly identifies how problems are solved from the beginning, and gives good example problems that will help you with homework and tests. The homework is heavy and very long but it helps you learn the material. Tests are very straightforward - he gives you review problem that will help you do well.
honestly i have never struggled in math before. taking this class as a freshman has ripped me apart and is the hardest thing ive taken. i am confused all the time and feel like he doesnt explain anything well at all. i would not recommend this professor at all.
This class itself is awful and the material is entirely up to the professor, but if you can keep up with what is being said in lectures and meet with him a couple times to go over HW, you might actually learn something, which cannot be said for most professors in this course.
Honestly speaking, if you don't have a solid mathematics standard like a graduate student or upperclass mathematics major student, you might find his lecture and textbook to be super-tough and hard to understand. Even if you are a math major student, you might not want to choose his class.
So he had an online textbook for this class with no examples, didn't point out what you did wrong on homework, only what you missed. There were online lectures from another random professor from a different school that barely lined up with the textbook or the order of the homework. Would not take his online class again.
The online textbook was very complex, had little relevance to the material, and had few examples. He also did not teach, but rather posted online lectures from a random lecturer that did not line up with the course. Only communication was though piazza, where he would respond very late and post homework very late. No feedback on homework or exams.
He is an old school professor. He never engaged the online class except reviewing the homework and exam. He use some lecture videos from YouTube. He does have math talent, I just feel he is poor at teaching.
I took Dr. Ogle's online class for 2568 (Linear algebra). My problems with this class: -Method of teaching is 1.) watch some videos from another prof 2.) read the textbook then 3.) do the homework. Literally did not give us any other resources -This guy wrote the textbook and it's awful. Impossible to learn from -Told me to teach myself everything
Not the best teacher but not the worst either. He can have an interesting sense of humor if you get to know him. Put in some effort and you'll do fine.
He shouldn't "teach" an online class if he doesn't feel like actually teaching it. All he did was give us videos by some random guy from another school which didn't relate to the topics we were learning at all and give us the link to the textbook (which he wrote himself and has very few examples and is extremely difficult to understand).
Let me start by saying that I took this class in person rather than online. While his online class is rather infamous (avoid it), I'd say that he is an excellent lecturer in person. He can be a little mean sometimes but students that participate in the in-class discussions (i.e. he calls on students randomly and frequently) actually learn a lot.
This class is for the kind of person who learns better by learning how to do things on their own. The textbook is hard to understand and the only video lectures he posts are of another professor that don't line up with the class. The info is easy enough to find online though and the exam questions are much easier than the homework questions.
Homework is due once a week, but they are pretty long problems. He doesnt even record his own lectures. He takes someone elses YouTube videos and posts them to a platform that we access to do this class. The YouTube dude isnt that great of a teacher (he basically teaches Ogles online class).
Drop any class you have with this prof. The lectures were online and he read straight off of his PowerPoint which was all theory with 0 concrete examples. Get ready to learn everything in your own as half the time he doesnt even upload the lectures and you have to beg him to teach the class. Exams are tough, homeworks take 5-10 hours to complete
This man is very unorganized, says he will upload a lecture one night then finally get around to us 4 days later. Day of the mid term exam, says he will upload it this evening. The man doesnt upload it till almost midnight EST. The finally exam had material that were not covered by his horrible lectures or the lectures he linked on YouTube
Bad, everything was so bad. There was no clear communication throughout the entire course. Grades rolled in weeks later, which was nice since we received no instructor responses for the majority of the semester. The lectures were so bad. He literally read the textbook word for word, and there were little to no examples in a MATH class. Do not take
the lecture is not helpful, you need to use the textbook
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL!!
Everything is messed up! You get no good resource for learning linear algebra. The recorded lectures are just him reading the textbook on Ximera. Gradings rubrics are unclear. For Homework, they only graded random questions rather than grading every problems. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE is the best choice.
Not good at teaching. His textbook is very dry and difficult to understand. Lectures are just the textbook read in a infuriatingly monotone voice. Focuses far too much on abstract, making it difficult to learn. Final had material that we had never actually worked on before, only read briefly. Feel like I didnt learn anything about linear algebra.
He does not try. Drop this class and beg to take it with someone else.
The lectures for this class are simply the prof reading the book. The book was awful, sometimes words essential for understanding were redacted or blocked by a yellow box? Absolutely no partial credit. No explanation for the grade you receive. Very very few points in the class overall. Rude in office hours. Seems not to have read the book at all.
I took his class during the summer. You had to finish 20 written questions in each homework and only 5 questions would be randomly selected to grade. On the midterm or final exam, a T/F problem has the same point with a handwritten question including 5 small questions. which means if you got wrong with all T/F problems, you may lose the exam.
The worst online class I've ever taken. "Lectures" consisted of reading slides dragged straight from the textbook. He never does any examples that use actual numbers and each lecture was only about 15 minutes so it's not like he didn't have time. Grading was rough and no feedback was given. I learned more from Google and StackExchange than class
Honestly, classes were a drag. Your only available resource to learn is either the book, or the audio version of the book in which the professor reads word for word from slides directly ripped from the book. If you were hoping to get feedback on your homework, you better hope its one of the questions he grades and doesnt write ???. Dont take.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had (at least in an online class.) He barely even teaches, preferring to just read the textbook word for word in a monotone while barely explaining any of the concepts or definitions he comes across. Homeworks are too complex, and there's barely any partial credit. Also, the final is worth half the grade.
If I could get him a negative rating I would. This is everything I've endured this semester: 1) A ridiculous amount of true false questions for no partial credit 2) Doesn't explain what you miss on homework 3) Literally forgot to post our FINAL EXAM 4) 1 midterm with a d average 5) Final exam took 3 days to complete and was 50% of my grade
I took his class online during the spring 2021 term and his class was easily the worst I've taken at OSU. It seemed like it was his goal to interact with students as little as humanly possible. His textbook is just essentially a list of theorems and the homeworks are scavengers hunts from the book. On top of that he's the toughest grader I've had.
This was the worst class I have ever taken and the only class I have ever failed. The professor didn't care to help at all, he graded 5/20 questions on every homework with no partial credit, and the final exam, which he forgot to post, was worth half of the final grade. Can't recommend that you don't take this class enough. Ogle is the worst.
Avoid Professor Ogle AT ALL COSTS! His class is insanely difficult because his lectures are not helpful at all. He does not work through practice problems during lecture, but expects us to be able to solve hw problems without any help. He refuses to help with hw problems even when you show up to office hours at 6PM on a Friday - I do NOT recommend!
Listen to everyone else: dont take this class with him. 4 HWs that take hours to do and only 25% of it is graded with no feedback. Lectures are read straight off the terrible ximera book he wrote. No examples at all. Office hours are little to no help. Similar HW problems cant be found anywhere. Even other textbooks dont help how hard this is
Horrible lecturer who just reads from the textbook and does no helpful example problems. The other lectures he links to on youtube are better, but don't cover everything in the class. The homeworks and exams are extremely time consuming and impossible to get good grades on because of a ton of true/false questions that are graded very harshly.
Worst Professor Ive ever had! His class consists of him ignoring all of your Carmen messages and emails, only posting lectures at either the afternoon or at 10pm on a Friday night, grading 2/6 problems on homework assignments that take hours, and not helping with homework for office hours. His lectures are just reading slides and doing no examples
This guy's a real stick in the bum. Grades no more than half your homework only to draw giant X's across your homework. Exams lengthy and time-consuming that, whilst at home over multiple days, requires you to dedicate a stupid amount of time. Lectures suck too. Horrible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, SERIOUSLY! I read reviews and said, eh, how bad can it be? This class is impossible to do well in and I even with tutoring. I do well on homework, but I bombed the midterm and went from an A to a C. Want to know why I bombed the exam? Three true of false questions, graded with no mercy and also no feedback. Horrible prof.
His section of this class uses a textbook that he wrote, so it is just as confusing as the notes. He explains everything in a very technical way that you need a Ph.D in Linear Algebra to understand. He makes you feel bad for getting questions wrong in class and is a very strict grader. Final exam is worth 50% of your grade
A perfect example of the minimum effort put into teaching a class. Basically what others said, don't take this class because it's online. It is worse than you think.
Don't take with Ogle, online or in person.
If you're going to take this class with Ogle I recommend getting a different textbook than the one he wrote and provided. Funny guy, but terrible lectures that don't help with the homework. Says that as long as you do all the assignments and exams you'll be fine 2 pass. Had a 65 that he rounded to a C-, but I have to retake because I needed a C.
The professor gave short lectures with a variety of sound issues that were difficult to understand. He used his own textbook which had syntax errors that prevented a variety of figures from appearing. The midterm and final were absurdly long. Only about a quarter of homework problems are graded and those didn't tell you what you did wrong.
Wouldn't recommend, teaches in a very theoretical way that is difficult to understand and doesn't do many examples. I was teaching myself and homework felt like a scavenger hunt in the textbook he wrote himself. Has office hours, but isn't helpful. Grading on homework and midterms is harsh and unhelpful and the final is worth 50% of your grade.
Worst teacher I have ever had at Ohio State. Horrible lectures where you can barely understand what he is saying. Homework and exams are graded very hard and the small amount of feedback you do get takes about a month for them to submit. Also only about half of the problems you do for homework actually get graded.
Ogle's lectures were terrible. He read directly off the slides and did not provide any examples of concepts. The midterm and final were worth 25 and 50% of the grade and he graded them very harsh. True/false questions are worth lots of points, they are extremely confusing and no partial credit is given. Do not take this class if you can avoid it.
His lectures consisted of reading directly off slides pulled directly from his unofficial online textbook full of errors. Lots of T/F questions on hw & exams were graded all or nothing. Very cruel in office hours & berated students all the time. I performed better in class after ditching his lecture videos & learning the content on my own.
Ogle knows the material extremely well and does an excellent job explaining it. Apparently his online lectures are low quality so I recommend in-person. He's very technical, but his class is easier than others I've seen. I also recommend finding intuitive explanations online. Also very test heavy but they were at least take-home exams in my case
Not much to say, I think all of these reviews speak for themselves. Avoid at all costs
Ogle's class is quite challenging, but unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Stay engaged, as his lectures can be dry. Expect tough exams, but the content is manageable with consistent effort.
