go to her lectures, she purposely leaves blanks just to get people to pay attention.
Cristen is a really good prof to teach Organic Chemistry! :)
Shes an amazing prof, uses a lot of props to help with the lessons and her midterms/tests are fair if you study. has great teaching skills
She is great help but will not put up with any bs. She is always in her office for extra help and willing to help you. But she has eyes like a hawk, she sees all the way to the back of the lecture hall.
shes a great prof, fun to be in her lectures
She was the most useless prof I've ever seen. Her lectures are inconsistent, and sometimes it felt like she didn't even know what she was teaching.
probably the worst professor, I've had. If you have the choice, do not take her class. Her formula sheets are a joke and I found her extremely difficult to learn from
Her techniques are bad. Her class is more of a biology class with all that memorizing. She gives you a horrible formula sheet. So be prepared to memorize 20+ formulas
She's just a horrible teacher. I wish Lori Van Belle was the prof for chem 1020. Piece of shxt formula sheet. She's the only prof that makes you memorize formulas. Her notes are useless too. You can't go back to the notes because she just scribbles a bunch of jargons on the rubbish slides.
I am a chem major and I think that lecture wise, Cristen is great. I think that if you attend the lectures and pay attention you will understand the concepts decently. However, the tests and ESPECIALLY the exam, are nothing like what was covered in class. Formula sheet is completely useless and some of the questions were never taught in the course
She has been the worst prof i've had in First year. AND the even worse thing is that she teaches the spring semester too. She can't teach and her examples in lecture are jokes which lead you to believe the tests will be easy but no. She gave us a formula sheet fulled with nothing but 1 useful equation. Might as well learn from the textbook
Awful. If given the choice never take a class with her. She had two hours a week available to help students with content she "taught" in class. Not to mention the formula sheet, helpful if you forget the value of Pi, useless if you ever need a formula for a question (every question).
By far the WORST professor I had first year. Her lecture slides were completely useless for midterms/exams. Her teaching was all over the place. Her midterms and exam were hard. Defiantly use the textbook for practice. Even then that made no difference since her questions were tricky. By far the WORST professor. I REALLY disliked her
She's tough, but good if you put in the work. Her exams are extremely fair if you study, and extremely hard if you don't.
Horrible Prof, very rude. Her formula sheet is a display of evilness, she expects you to memorize everything, everything on the formula sheet is absolutely useless. Avoid class with her at ALL costs. Never had a problem with any other proff ever..her lectures seem easy, then the test is impossible and nothing like the lectures or notes.
i was worried about her course from reading the reviews here, but it's nothing to be afraid of as long as you do practice problems. buy the textbook and STUDY, don't just rely on the example problems in class! it's chemistry, it's not going to be super easy
I DON'T RECOMMEND TO TAKE HER CLASSES AT ALL ,, SHE IS TERRIBLE, THE FINAL WAS HARD I PARLEY PASSED THE COURSE
Better than most
This professor is what you call a talking textbook. She presents students with limited alternate ways of thinking about complex subjects. In many cases, she overcomplicates simple things. On tests, you must solve problems the way she has shown in class or you will lose marks marks. I went from a B+ in chemistry in high school to barely passing.
Cristen is an awesome person as a human. However, I feel like she expects more from us even though her powerpoints are very confusing. She over complicates the simplest things and does not give any hints about the midterms and finals. The questions on tests were over-complicated. Don't recommend if you want to do well in Chemistry. Hard marker.
Tough marker. I'd rather not take chem at all.
Cristen seems like a nice person, however her formula sheet is ridiculous! she expects you to do tests without giving you formulas. Which by the way is impossible unless you memorize all the formulas given in the 9 chapters. Her exam questions are not of examples from her powerpoint. To better understand the material i suggest read the textbook.
I'd recommend taking Nelson instead, but I understand he now teaches other courses. Since many students don't have an option of taking other profs, I strongly encourage everyone to attend classes, because this is one of the courses in uni that you REALLY have to work for. Get ready for long sleepless nights.
Her exams are extremely difficult and lecture notes are not clear !!
She's an excellent chem prof and is always ready to answer questions during her lectures. Her exams are very fair, exactly what you expect at a university level. All test questions were based off examples we did in class or that were assigned as suggested textbook practice problems --do them! Practice your speed and you'll do fine:) don't slack!
If you rely only on her notes you will not pass the course, however if you go to her lectures and participate she is one of the best profs you will have. Highly recommend.
Hardest course I've ever taken. Cristen does not help people who don't know what they're doing... I did not take Chem in high school, and was completely lost the entire semester. No matter how many help sessions or office hours I went to, there was just no chance. She speeds through the lectures, even though this is an INTRO TO CHEMISTRY course.
shes the best
Awful professor, goes through lectures WAY too fast and doesn't assist those who can't keep up with certain concepts. Not helpful, not a good lecturer.
Assumes you already know everything and that the class is review
Most negative reviews for her are from people who never took HS chem and are complaining that's she's difficult because she expects you to know the basics. Yes this is an intro to chem course, that doesn't mean she's going to teach you things you should've learned in 9th grade. If you've never taken a chem course, uni chem isn't the place to start.
Really great prof and a good lecturer! Exams are super easy/fair and she'll never give you a question you haven't done with her a million times in class. DON'T SKIP CLASS, her slides are just diagrams and won't make sense without the lecture, and questions are not on the slides she gives you. Cant get less than a B if you go to class and pay attn
She really has to spend more time for EVERY topic in the exam. She's alright, just spends time in class for things that won't be on the exam.
I pretty much taught myself the whole course. As someone who has been out of school for many years, I found this course challenging. Her lectures are garbage but don't be discouraged. You just have to take initiative. Google is your friend. Use resources available to you on campus. Do the assign textbook questions. You can do well in this course.
Best PROF EVR
Cristen has improved a lot in her teaching skills from last semester and is an extremely personable individual. She is a phenomenal teacher to be around as makes learning chem easy.
It seems she is "winging" everything. She waits until the last minute to write tests and so even if you want to be prepared and get ahead she's unable to give you any help because she doesn't even know what she will be asking about. Overall a horrible organizer, very poor lecturer because she just talks at you and doesn't provide follow-up slides.
She talks at you during lectures and makes no effort to provide clear notes post lecture. She tries to make you apply concepts but she doesn't do a good job teaching that skill. No helpful exam prep for application Qs.I learned way more reading the dry textbook than attending her class. Recommend reading the text first and then going to her class.
She made biochemistry challenging to study for; for no reason. Her lectures were not concise; she just seems to talk at you, she recommends you follow the learning outcome but her midterms seem to be like she just wings it. All I can say is you have to be 2x more prepared for this class. Study the textbook and basically teach yourself.
Umm so she is okay. She is very assertive... You have to really listen to what she is saying in her lectures. You have to do more reading and use resources on campus to get a good grade in this course. She okay, not my favorite teacher, not gonna take her classes again but not horrible. Sometimes when you ask her questions she seems annoyed.
she was awesome
Extremely easy course, but hucaluk is kind of ... not intelligent at all. One would expect a university professor to have some level of intelligence ... but no. Her assignments are easy but so many questions are marked incorrectly. Also, she simply does not know chemistry well enough to be a prof. Hucaluk can't think critically whatsoever.
100% Would not recommend. Her lectures are always very simple and general but test and exam questions are very long and complicated, she also writes midterms very last minute. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire course. Take advantage of on campus help like PASS sessions and other tutoring, they'll be a big help.
Her tests are hard. She takes simple content and manages to create long and confusing questions. All her lectures are straight forward but tests are complicated. She's a nice person, but her assessments are not fair. Ive had her for a few classes and midterm class averages for all were usually around the 50s, not for lack of studying.
Ive had her for multiple courses. In Chem 1010 she was good however in all upper year courses she is awful. Her tests are super hard! She makes questions long and confusing. Even the TA couldn't solve some of her tutorial questions without the answer key! If you have her for anything other than first year Chem... Goodluck.
Absolutely horrible so far. I emailed her when I received a really bad mark on one of the assignments and she didn't even bother explaining the step by step solutions. On top of that, she literally gave us lessons that are on youtube! I can't believe I am paying $4000+ to watch crash course videos! She's a terrible online teacher.
she's not a reasonable person at all, makes everything overcomplicated so you lose marks for bs. the course itself was easy but man oh man you'll get into some decent arguments with her.
If you're a new student with the ability to chose another prof, do yourself a favor and pick any other option.
Her module lectures are mostly free youtube videos that don't match the difficulty level of this course. Whenever she actually teaches the content is also simplified and does not match the difficulty on the tests. The tests are also full of mistakes and I constantly have to email her because right answers get marked as wrong.
Worst prof I had so far. She has this no backtracking rule for the midterm and exam so u cannot go back to the previous question and check over ur work and u have to finish questions before moving in to next question. 90% of the class didnt finish the last 4-5 questions and lost around 20 marks for a 45 mark midterm!
She is not reasonable or caring to say the least. She will find any excuses to deduct marks and I always had to double check my work with her because she never graded my assignments properly. During a pandemic, she decided it was best to triple our number of assignments and her online lectures questions are way easier then the assignment ones. 0/10
Consistently marks the assignments wrong, and gives no feedback on them. We have no way of knowing if our answer is wrong or if it was an error on her end. Midterm was nothing like her lectures, and had a lot of errors in it. Doesn't listen to her students and gave all of us a copy pasted response to our emails for midterm errors.
Absolutely awful, don't have 1 good thing to say. Made the pandemic 20x worse just by being the prof to this course. Course itself is relatively easy if you put in the time but prepare to teach yourself everything. Assignment/quiz questions are in no way similar to the lectures, she teaches the easiest version of the questions she actually gives
Too lazy to put her own questions, so brings super hard questions in short time with no back track. Her excuse : students will cheat. Finds every opportunity to deduct marks, so she made the late submission penalty thing in the 2nd term. Liar; when asked about the Oral test results, she said tutors are working on them, results were never released.
Gives a super easy lecture slides to shock you with her hard stressful tests. Her assignments are full of mistakes, as she does not put the correct answers as her grading is always full of mistakes. Disorganized as she leaves us stressed not knowing how the final will look like, the online evaluation tests results were never released, etc
I'd say I agree with the reviews on this professor as she is very not composed with her work , screws over students ,and for an example on a assignment the sign was not in the correct value ;positive or negative, lost half of the marks on the assignment. Exams are stupidly hard, with the practice exam being so simple. Overall just not a good prof.
i wish i could give a 0, made me physically ill giving her a 1/5. terrible midterm chrissy grrrrrr
the worst midterm i have ever written rawrrrrrr
Just no
Prof Hucaluk has improved DRAMATICALLY from last semester. She actually took into consideration the feedback she received and it SHOWED. Her assignments are fair, and her midterm is fair as well, considering it is open book. If anything it was just a little lengthy. She is thorough in her lectures, and aims to answer as many questions as she can.
Has the ability to make chemistry a detestable experience.
80 minute time period to do a 3 hour test making it a test of how fast you can write rather than one which tests your knowledge.
Terrible prof. The quiz questions are unreasonably hard as it doesnt cover anything learned from the lectures. She doesnt take any feedback into consideration even though majority of students are clearly struggling. She takes off marks for the tiniest mistakes and most of the material is learned through YouTube videos.
Overall nice person but not a great prof. She gives a lot of hw and doesnt take her time to explain everything. I dont know about yall but I didnt pay to teach myself. On top of that she doesnt give enough time for quizzes and tests if she doesnt change her ways and you have her next God bless you.
Class is very heavy/hard for an intro-level course. Not very thorough or generous with quiz/test timing.
Studied all week for this midterm and still wasn't able to do majority of the questions and I didn't finish. Practice, lecture, homework, and quiz questions were much easier and didn't prepare us for the midterm at all. No backtracking allowed and for every question, you either got it right or wrong. No part marks. Wish i could give a zero
She is really nice in her lectures and is easy to talk to. I found that having pre-recorded YouTube videos and only properly reviewing the "easy" stuff during her class made the course very hard. This class is not a class you can easily get good grades in so aim to pass. A lot of independent work!! But it is university, you signed up for it!!
Extremely unfair when creating and grading assessments. Mostly teaching yourself this extremely heavy-based content course
She tends to cover the easy content in the online lectures and leaves most of not all the difficult concepts for you to learn yourself. Make sure you manage your time because she gives you heaps of practice problems every week. Do them all and definitely go to workshops and PASS or you will not do well in the course. Trust me.
Had this professor twice and I can say that she’s managed to ruin both courses for me. She makes the lecture content so easy then tests us on the hardest material. She’s a very unfair grader and takes every opportunity to cut off marks. Would not recommend her.
Chemistry went from my favorite course to least favorite since I started chem 1010U until 1020U with mrs.
Her midterms are straight up horrible. Since everything is online she would say the midterm is open book, then she makes it super hard and if calculated on average 1.25mins per question, that too multiple step questions. Her in class weekly quizzes is no better, 10 mins to solve a long answer question, its just a race against time.
You already know! Extremely unfair and exams do not match taught content. Very limited time during exams and the class average was 51%
terrible teacher honestly dont know how she got her teaching license
Terrible at teaching (lists facts but don't take time to explain clearly in a way that's easy to understand). Whenever lecture is over I felt like I've learned nothing. Expect to go through the materials on your own and study more in depth cause the lectures and homework questions will not cover what's on the test. Organic Chemistry Tutor helps.
In my opinion, Cristen is pretty decent at teaching. She does move quickly but in lecture I'm able to understand the material. The problem is her midterm and exam. Class average has been a 50 for years. She gave us like 2 minutes per problem on the midterm and they were multiple step problems that she gives 10 minutes for on quizzes.
No time at all for midterms and exams. She gives you a quiz for 10 or 15 minutes but expects you to do similar questions as "multiple choice" questions within a minute. Even if you study and understand the concepts and practice, it all comes down to whether you can do it quickly. It's ridiculous. Her midterms are just a race against time
The midterm was absolutely horrible, it was built to make students fail. The multiple choice were like short answers and the short answers were like long answers. To rub even more salt into the wound, we were not only given a 20 minute late start, but had only 1 hour to solve these torture questions. It was not nearly enough time.
I really don't like talking ill about my professors for, Cristen, I would say the following: her lectures are REALLY IMPORTANT, participate and make sure when you go home you know your stuff, Her midterm, it was fair in terms of the content, but too little time. I hope she takes that into account, I wish her and you guys all the best!!
I am confused and frustrated at why she makes the midterms ridiculously hard. Has little to do with how much you know the contents but how fast you can write. It's very unnecessary and unfair to those who need high GPA to pursue higher education like med school, even though it's not about their knowledge but if they can do them unrealistically fast
Prof. Hucaluk has a great personality for a human being. However, her midterms are ridiculously hard as they are based on how fast you can do them, not how well you understand each concepts. We only had an hour to do 23 questions that required multi-step calculations. Furthermore, once you fail the midterm it will be hard to recover.
Do not take a class with Cristen if you can help it. Cristen's lectures and quizzes are fine, nothing too crazy, but her midterms and exams? Good luck. You know something is wrong when the class average is 50% and there are multiple people retaking the course. I'm surprised I passed, I assume my lab grade saved me. Avoid this prof at all costs.
Her lectures are great, but you have to be there. The annotated lectures dont give a lot of info. The videos she posted solving problems was really helpful and I took advantage of the workshops, but the exams were really difficult. There was not enough time for the midterm at all, I couldnt even finish. She is great overall but study hard.
The course overall wasn't too bad, learning was fun and interactive. However, the midterm came as a shock bc there was little time to work through problems. Make sure to attend class, tutorials and workshops. Practice your speed!! Use the questions from tutorials, class, workshops and weekly quizzes as practice and you should be fine!!
She's terrible she's a tough grader she doesn't know how to teach and then she will BLAME you for the bad grades, i recommend using organic chem tutor on YouTube otherwise you WILL NOT PASS and unfortunately I didn't know this until it was too late. Cristen, I hope you get fired, you do not deserve your job.
If you don't have a great knowledge in chemistry this is not for you. You need to attend her lectures because the "annotated notes" are not useful to study with. Her work is messy and unorganized. Her midterm was terrible with 20 short answers and 4 long answers. Does not take constructive criticism and has very few opportunities to boost your mark
Cristen is nice, but has different expectations and teaching styles. She focuses on 'connections' and 'flow' between topics, variables, chapters, and questions; even if it's not the best way to understand the information. Since her courses are so challenging, I learn the most from her. Be prepared to put in extra effort if you want a good grade!
Hucaluk barely gave any time for the miderm, and then proceeded to get upset with the class for receiving complaints about it and her teaching. Very unpleasant woman when she is told she sucks
She doesnt know how to teach and refuses to believe the fact that our future relies on these grades. Overall rude and not helpful. She should be fired
Class material is well formatted and easy to understand, if you pay attention, interact, attend workshops, etc. The issue are in the grading scheme, tests/midterms/exams questions, and the overall not caring that students put in hours studying a day but don't seem to receive a grade that correlates to the. amount of effort put into.
This is the worst prof I've ever had.
not one good thing to say about her. cant teach, cant grade, makes exams unreasonably hard, and overall not a good prof.
by far one of the most incompetent professors I've had the displeasure taking a class with. cant teach, completely unreasonable, doesnt allocate enough time to do well on midterms, and did not seem to care for her students.
This school needs more chem professors.
can't really teach chemistry concepts, but always offers extra help. i would recommend going through ALL the textbook questions to be prepared for exams/tests, it's the only way i passed.
exams are horrible
she cannot teach but read the textbook, do practice problems, ask questions and you'll pass
Go to the lectures and take notes. She is tuff but hella straightforward and stands on business.
To be honest, I had her for several classes but every class is an nightmare. Her lecture is basically about unimportant stuff that will not ever be tested. The test is out of our knowledge.
To pass this class 1 Attend all the lectures and take notes 2 Fully read the assigned textbook chapters 3 Do the assigned practice questions with units 4 Do similar questions in the assigned textbook chapters to speed up your calculation and writing time as you will be tested on the speed at which you provide an answer (Important)
just read the textbook and do all the practice questions and YOU WILL BE FINE.
Cristen is ok, Her midterm exam was out of 22 marks which isn't great. If you pay attention, participate and do practice questions you should be fine. I didn't enjoy completing chempass but the 5% is needed because she is tuff. BE AWARE SHE MADE CHEM 1010U ALOT EASIER THAN CHEM 1020U.
WORST PROF EVER STAY CLEAR FROM THIS SORRY EXCUSE FOR A PROFESSOR.
Her weekly quizzes are straight forward and relate to the lectures but her exams are hard and mostly cover the topics she briefly went over in her lectures. You really have to prioritize this class in order to get a decent grade.
I had her three times as i had to retake chem 2, i would not recommend her at all. The only reason i passed was bc of Shumail in the drop-ins. I would recommend going to the workshops and to the drop-ins, it will carry you!
Overall, I can tell the professor is very knowledgeable and passionate about her field. However, she did have some difficulty answering questions clearly, possibly due to time in the field. Exams and midterms were also occasionally unfair, with questions on content we had never seen before.
Tough course but she makes the content very clear and straight forward. To some she may come off strict, but she is passionate about chemistry and teaching. She is unimpressed by lazy and misbehaving students and expects that if you're attending lectures, you're there to learn. Overall, if you pay attention and want to learn, she's a good prof.
Her midterm was difficult due to the phrasing of the questions. The incomplete information in her slides makes it challenging to follow her lectures/review. She often skips steps and doesn't explain concepts well. She does provides extra help (pass, 5% chempass bonus) tho. Prioritize this and anatomy if you're in human HS as they're content heavy!
i loved chem in hs, so this class was not horrible for me, but i can see how students who dont like chem would struggle in this class. u need to know this content really well in order to pass because her short answer questions on midterm are worded in a way to confuse you. go to every lecture if u want to pass and use all the resources available!!!
I had an amazing chem teacher in hs & I see a clear difference in her ability to teach content clearly. It was always difficult to understand the concepts. Her mid & exam were reasonable ONLY if you rlly understand the content. Take advantage of chem workshops and do the textbook practice - Its the only way to get a good grade.
Prof is nice and respectful when asking for help, but honestly I feel like if we had a study guide/study questions that weren't just "look at previous lectures" it would have went a long way. I didn't do horrible, but I am nervous for the next class since I have her again.
anyone saying she's too tough probably just didn't study enough. she seems intimidating but is actually nice and helpful. attend the lectures, get the textbook, and do her recommended practice problems from it and you'll do fine. her midterm and exam was very straightforward, you just have to study. only reading the lecture slides is not enough.
Professor Hucaluk has a unique teaching style that takes adjusting to, but the material is challenging. Studying the textbook and using resources like unstuck study can really help. Attend all lectures and be ready to put in the work.
I go to every lecture and still have no idea what's happening. I leave this class more confused than coming in. I hate her teaching style, and her exams are tough.
She's the classic condescending white woman prof. Will call you out mid-lecture for being 10 mins late. Exams were nothing like lectures—way harder—and when the whole class did poorly, she didn't curve or adjust grades. No support, no accountability. Just avoid her if you value fairness.
The class is pretty bad if u can avoid her do it trust me Ur better off without her i don't know where she gets her questions from cause they isn't from the lecture on top of the questions on the midterm are worded so badly and literally are hard to understand pls be prepared to read textbook and pray to god daily if u want to pass.
Horrible prof, notes are messy, exams are literally comparable to being in a mental institution, no practice questions or rewiew for exams, finds ur downfall funny
final exam was a nightmare. the multiple choice questions were taking 10 minutes each. Barely taught anything that was on the exam.
doesn't teach
if u have biochem with her one advice i will give you is learn from the textbook. it doesn't matter how much you study the lectures, if you don't look at the textbook, you're screwed. She gets all her tutorial, test and final questions from the textbook I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, learn material from the textbook bcuz the tutorials are hard too
Awful prof, don't take her classes. Questions on her midterms and exams are nothing that are properly and thoroughly taught in the lectures.
teaches like a failed girlboss doing a ted talk. stopped class when i came back from peeing. sorry queen, didn't realize we needed bathroom passes. the exam (nothing like lectures) was psychological warfare in multiple choice form. i took AP chem and still walked out of that exam spiritually concussed. avoid if you can. if you cant, pray.
If you stay on top of your work and practice other typical "type A student" habits, you can succeed in this course. I found that most of her lectures were sufficient enough, but I found myself not completely understanding some topics by the end of some lectures despite giving my full attention. The evaluations didn't have many unexpected questions.
I found it harder than 1010. For some reason, the evaluations had more unexpected questions that were not really discussed in the lectures or practice questions. You need to really understand the material to succeed in this class. Definitely join PASS sessions and go to office hours as much as possible.
Lectures are not easy to follow, content is quite easy but she makes it seem so hard. Her exam is mind boggling.
This class made me switch majors. and i had a 98% in highschool chem. for all yall thinking this is easy its a whole new level
Really great prof and highly professional. People dont study or know the content and then blame her. Was very generous when marking the exam - I made a big mistake on one of the questions my values were all wrong and she still gave me most of the marks for showing the correct steps.
Genuinely the worst teacher this year, her lectures make little to no sense and if you miss a class you're screwed because her slides have NOTHING on them. You need the textbook for this class because it's the only thing saving you from failing.
if you are reading this please listen to me. I had a 97% in hs chem, loved it so much I'm majoring in chemistry. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. RETAKE IT IN THE SUMMER OR WITH ANOTHER PROF. she does not know how to teach, if you do not listen get ready to pull all nighters, have a quiz each week, and teach yourself EVERYTHING.
Doesn't like getting asked questions. Also, does not teach very well. The only reason I did well in the class was bcz. most of it was high school review. I would most definitely have done worse if it were all new content. Lecture slides are also too simple and do not go into the depth seen on exams. Make sure your foundations are solid.
I can see why a lot of people don't like her but it also doesn't make sense to me. She is a great no nonsense teacher who clearly just wants her students to learn. Sometimes she can be a bit rude but overall she really isn't that bad.
tests are so random.
The prof sets the "foundation" of the lessons through the lectures. However, the midterm and exams are more difficult than what is taught in the lectures. To study, use the additional resources and suggested practice problems. Advice: Treat all the additional resources and suggested practice problems as mandatory and you can get an A+
She does not explain concepts well, often missing out on big chunks of information. I recommend reviewing high school material or watching youtube videos. Do the suggested practice problems as they are similar to the exams. Tutorial questions also weren't too different to what was on the exam.
