Sister Charles is the most sincere teacher in the world--her whole point is literally just to help her students. Also, she is crazy fun. Only two tests and they're online; a few big papers but we do them in installments so it's manageable. Don't suck up, but be friends with her. It's not a hard class, but she expects you to show effort.

Definitely one of the best english professors. Cristie sincerely cares for her students but isn't a push over. Her assignments are fun and challenging. She really helps students improve their writing skills. I left her class feeling more prepared for grad school and have subsequently done better on all of my papers.

ENGL 315, she is extremely helpful and provides you with every opportunity to succeed. Definitely take her for this class ENGL 202, try taking this class from someone else! There is a ridiculous amount of required reading. She speeds through power points and we had like three finals all during finals week; a paper, final essay, and a midterm.

Prof. Charles is a really great teacher! She really cares about each student and tries to get to know you. This class was a lot of work for a general ed class though. At the end of the semester, we had a debate project, a paper, a presentation, and an essay. If she wasn't so great, I would really hate the class. But overall, I would recommend her!

Sister Charles treats her students with respect. She graded every paper twice to make sure she graded each one fairly, offered feedback on every paper and midterm, and adjusted her course curriculum halfway throughout the semester to accommodate her class's preferences. If you take a course from her, you won't regret it.

She is my favorite professor I've ever had. She cares about her students in and out of the classroom and expects that you try, but coaches and encourages when things are hard. She is willing to meet up outside of class and never belittles her students. She knew my name on the first day of class-yeah she's that awesome.

She is a great person and teacher but some of the work was unclear and left me guessing on my papers resulting in lower grades than I wanted. PREPARE TO SPEND MAJORITY OF YOUR SEMESTER WRITING. Left little time for other classes. Besides that, I did learn a lot of beneficial things but I wish it wasn't as time consuming. Ridiculous.

Class was time-consuming, but I learned useful skills/wrote papers that will help me in grad school and the future. Sister Charles was caring and wanted us to succeed, and sometimes switched around stuff to make it easier, but the work load is rough. Hard class but helpful.

Sister Charles is one of the few professors at BYU who actually cares about what she is doing and you can feel it. She grades hard and makes you read alot but she honestly wants to help you through everything. She gives feedback on your papers that is helpful. Anyone who says bad things about her is just angry they actually had to do something.

Professor Charles is one of the better GE professors out there. Instead of reading, lecture, test, you get an experience to create media, projects, and other things based on your readings and cultures. While you may be overloaded in readings you at least get to apply them in a way to help you learn the material better. No real study guide there.

Professor Charles is one of the most understanding teachers ever! I absolutely loved her class. She took out a good amount of homework this semester and substituted it for in class projects and fun things that are engaging for class. She truly cares for her students and if you show up to class and put in effort, you will get a good grade!

I loved taking this class. She was very accommodating if you needed more time on an assignment. You are always working in groups which makes the class fun and easier. There is a lot of reading and it is talked about in class. Overall I would say getting an A is very possible for everyone. She is super funny and inspirational!

I took this class for a GE requirement. It was was super fun since the class was bout 30 people, and there were lots of presentations. There is a lot of reading, and you have to know several authors. But Professor Charles is super sweet and really cares about her students.

There is daily reading but it's perfectly attainable. Class attendance is mandatory but it does lead to great discussions. There is only one big essay; the rest of the writing is broken up. Be prepared for a lot of group work. This class is a great overview of world literature.

Professor Charles cares about her students. While there is a lot of reading, it is attainable. She is also very flexible on due dates so reach out if you are struggling and she will work with you. She's also pretty open to students' opinions on project and test structure. There is a lot of group work and class discussion, so be aware of that.

I cannot recommend Professor Charles enough! She is energetic and makes every class period engaging. At first I was nervous about the structure of the class because of all the group projects, but pretty soon everyone got into it and by the end of the semester we were all pals. Do all the reading and read her emails and you will thrive.

I seriously loved Professor Charles! She was so caring, enthusiastic, and did everything she could to help her students out. The class was very interactive and requires a lot of participation. The tests are difficult, but if you've done all the reading you'll be just fine. I would take another one of her classes in a heartbeat!

She is incredibly caring, helpful, and open-minded, and excellent at teaching. Though the class can be hard due to there being quite a lot of reading, and needing to consistently participate in groups due to it being structured into long role-playing games, Professor Charles is more than willing to do what she can to help her students succeed.

I had a lot of fun in this class. At first I was scared off by the emphasis on group work, but you do so much the projects are generally pretty small and grading is very lax. Points come from doing the readings on time, class participation, and the three tests. Each unit you're assigned to a group and participate in a debate at the end.

No hesitation recommending Professor Charles. She easily bonds with her students, and is more than willing to work with you individually, much more so than most professors. The tests are challenging, but it is not difficult to succeed and obtain a good grade. Not many teachers are this friendly and warm. Take as many of her classes as you can.

Professor Charles is by far one of the best professors that I've ever had the opportunity to take a class from. She's one of the few that cares about students and will take time to work with students, even individually if needs be.

I took GWS 222 with Professor Charles and she is AMAZING! There is a LOT of reading (granted I did take this class in the spring) and the tests are kind of hard but she prepares you well for them and gives you the essay questions in advance. The lectures are very thought-provoking and we had really good discussions.

I highly recommend taking any class from Professor Charles, but I will say that it was really special taking this Global Women's Studies course from her. She cares a lot about the subject matter, she chooses fantastic readings and presenters, and she loves her students.

Professor Charles is not only inspirational academically, but also such an incredible example personally. She was always willing to work with us students and created an extremely accepting and safe environment that has been like few classes I have experienced on a university level. She does everything to help you succeed academically that she can.

She sometimes had trouble multitasking between discussion and getting through her material, and her tests were very essay heavy with 2 five paragraph essays in addition to other questions.

Lectures and class material are engaging and it was great to share and hear everyone's lived experiences. You need to keep in mind though that the only things that can be graded are the facts from the class material. The tests are specific but everything on them will be things covered in class or explicit in the readings. I loved this class.

I really enjoyed this class. Professor Charles is so fun and caring! The coursework was not too difficult! The tests are a little tricky and require a lot of memorization. However, the lectures are so fun. She helped our class bond which created such a safe space for sharing and learning! I would absolutely take this class again!

I LOVE professor Charles. She is truly inspirational. GWS 222 is the best. She inspired me so much with love and compassion. Her exams are a little hard, and she is a tough grader because she is in the English department. But she is willing to laugh with you, cry with you, be serious with you. Everyone should take this class from her.

If you're looking at this class, know that there's A LOT of participation and reading. There are three tests, each in two parts, half open half closed book. Participate, you'll do well. I usually don't like too many readings and get bored with history classes but Prof Charles makes the class enjoyable and easier! She has so much passion for the subject but also for cultures and she cares so much about her students! Also the homework is not difficult; the tests aren't too hard either as long as you know the material decently.

This is the most unique literature class I have taken. She breaks down the materials of the 3 units of literature we study into 3 separate games, instead of multiple small papers and solo projects. She is nice and creative! I highly recommend her class. If you do the readings & participate you will do great and have fun. Take good notes for tests.

This was a very interesting class, and there were so many fun and diverse assignments. There was so much reading for this class though, it felt like we were being drowned with 30 pages of reading every day. The midterms require that you remember specific details mentioned in class, and it was all a little disorganized. But she is very sweet.

This is one of my favorite classes I've taken at BYU. It covers GE Letters and Civ 2, and is 100% worth it. Smaller class size, so she gets to know her students and caters the material to them. There is a fair amount of reading, but she actively tries to scale it back to what matters most and the readings are interesting. Take this class!!!!!

I struggled initially in this class because its so different from the other classes I've taken but Professor Charles is so helpful and takes her students best interests to heart. It is quite a bit of work and there can be a lot of reading at times but its totally doable. Shes very passionate about the class which I appreciate.

She is the coolest professor. Super nice, learns names, gets to know everyone. However, this is a literature class, so don't take this unless you are ready to READ. SO much reading. Interesting class. Fantastic Professor; she is very good at working with her students to be accommodating if needed. HW is pretty much just TONS of reading and then posting on the digital dialog. Her exams have 2 portions: one is a long essay, and the other is a mix of multiple choice, matching, a few short answers, and short essays (usually 2).

There are a lot of readings, but you find yourself wanting to do them to be prepared for activities in class. She designed the class in a super fun way. It's competitive, you get excited about the material, and you have a lot of freedom in the assignments. Most assignments are done in groups and they're pretty simple. She cares SO much about us.

There was a lot of reading and it is stuff you actually have to read to do well in the class, but unlike other classes she picks really interesting readings and finds new ones to cater to the specific students.

There is a significant amount of reading, but as long as you're prepared, everything else is that much easier. I was genuinely hesitant and sad to leave class on the final day, it was that good.

Her curriculum is well designed and she is always open to feedback on what you did or did not like reading. The class itself is pretty chill with little homework, study for tests and know how to analyze texts and connect them to each other.

There is a lot of reading and how she runs class can take some getting used to, but there are almost no essays and class is surprisingly engaging. So if you're looking to fulfill the Civ2 and Letters general requirements, taking ENGL 202 from Professor Charles is a good option.

While I have taken countless religion classes while in my 3 years of university, this has been the class that I have felt the spirit the most. There are 3 papers, a group and individual project but you receive lots of guidance. She does grade harshly on writing and grammar.

One of the best classes I've taken! Professor Charles addresses tough issues with sensitivity and honesty. She welcomes discussion and creates a very respectful, open environment where we are free to share experiences and opinions. It was just so clear from the way she ran everything that she cared about us so much. Sometimes she would save a lecture for a different day and instead make a topic about US. I know of multiple students who told her that her lesson was an incredible answer to prayer. As one of two males in the class this semester MORE GUYS SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS.

Professor Charles is amazing! She teaches women's issues with grace and compassion. I loved the course content. There was a lot of homework/reading. She gives helpful feedback on papers/projects. Tests and essays are hard and there is a lot to remember, but she also provides multiple extra credit opportunities and is flexible with deadlines.

I liked Professor Charles' class. There was a lot of reading, but it was all really interesting stuff! I would highly recommend the Global Women's Studies program at BYU. There was a heavy emphasis on women's studies about the LDS church.

She teaches about women's issues through a gospel lens and does an amazing job of encouraging students to voice their opinions, concerns, questions, and feedback. Professor Charles will change your life. She is passionate, brilliant, and she sincerely cares about her students. I had a crazy workload this semester and she was flexible and accommodating with assignments. It's worth it to buy the text book. You will read a LOT before each class and have daily reading quizzes. 3 papers and 2 exams. SO worth it.

Professor Charles really cares about what she is teaching and it shows! She was always open to meetings and was flexible with assignment deadlines and resubmissions. I loved the content, although often lectures were off-topic and didn't cover the readings. Lots of gospel incorporated. The reading is a lot, but I would recommend the class!

She's a great professor and definitely cares for her students and wants to see them succeed. We were behind pretty much since the beginning of the class which made it difficult to catch up all semester, and we pretty much never did. It was cool because there are so many guest lecturers lined up during the semester which was nice.

I loved Professor Charles! She is very personable and is super willing to help her students. There was a lot of reading for this class and the tests were pretty difficult. As long as you stay on top of the reading and take notes during class you should do well. There are lots of easy points to help you do well if the tests are a struggle for you.

You can tell how much she genuinely cares for her students and their well-being. While we covered some tough subjects in this class, she made it a very safe space and comfortable learning environment.

Dr. Charles was one of the most caring professors I have ever had. I could not believe how much she cared about us. She learned all of our names, carefully read and remembered what we wrote on our surveys, and put us into groups accordingly. Things felt a bit rushed sometimes in class. The class environment is fun and open, and she's a natural presenter. Be prepared to 1). read a lot (an appropriate amount for a literature class), and 2). work in a group if you're going to take this class.

As an English major, this class was not too difficult for me. It's probably a bit more challenging for non-humanities students who aren't accustomed to reading 30-50 pages before class each day. I thought the reading load was very fair, and classes were always a blast. Professor Charles is kind, considerate, sensitive, and brilliant. Take from her!

Professor Charles is amazing and has designed such an unique course. The literature she chooses to read is tailored to the class specifically and is interesting and relevant. She has lots of creative ways to connect with the texts, there is never a dull moment!

One of the most passionate and caring professors I've had at BYU! The readings are heavy but spread between quick excerpts from a variety of authors. Prof. Charles learns everyone's names, tailors authors to students cultural experiences/preferences, and shares lots of personal experiences. Also lots of engaging group projects and presentations!

Professor Charles is amazing! By far my favorite professor. She is so down to earth and vulnerable. Even though I have a hard time with the content (English just isn't my strong suit), her passion for the literature was inspiring. You could tell writing and literature has helped her and she wants it to be the same for us.

This is my second class with her and I would recommend it to everyone. It covers 2 generals and she makes class so fun and engaging. She's a great at conveying her love for the topic in an engaging way! There's a good amount of reading due each class but it is manageable. The class isn't that hard and she makes it possible for everyone to do well!

Professor Charles really cares about her student and this class, and it shows. Assigned reading is around 20-40 pages per class, and the exams are heavily dependent on your knowledge of the readings. There are a lot of group projects and presentations as well. This is a fun and enjoyable class, but definitely not easy.

She cares SO much about her students. She will literally change her curriculum mid-semester to include readings from a country of origin of one of her students. At first the group presentations were a bit awkward, but now we all get so excited for them and genuinely learn a ton. Lots of reading, 25-30 pages each class.

I'm a senior at BYU, not majoring in English or anything related. This is one of the top three classes I have ever taken. Dr. Charles is the most passionate and caring professor I've ever taken from, and she's curated a great list of readings for the course. If you're looking for a Dead Poet's Society moment in your undergrad education, this is it.

Be ready to put some serious effort into this class but that's why you came to school yea? She truly cares about her students and puts some much into the class. If I went to class more I woulda had a better grade but work was tough. She was very understanding about it. Lots of group work and engaging activities. Great class!

Most fun class ever! It's 3 games for 3ish world literature eras. Your grade is game points, reading, and tests. Lots of fun, pop-up group presentations. There's a LOT of reading, 60+ pages/week, but late reading for 50% credit helps. The material is fascinating and culturally enriching. Love Prof. Cristie—so authentic and knows everyone's name!

She is great! It is important to know that I took this class just because I had to (to cover Letters and Civ 2) and I viewed it as a way to bite the bullet and get them over with. At first, it felt like that. But her love for literature was infectious and taught me to appreciate it more. She is also very understanding with difficulties. Great lady!

Sister Charles is super enthusiastic about her material. She structures the class like a game which keeps thing interesting with debates and presentations. Requires a lot of participation from the students.

I took this class as a GE (Civ 2 + Letters) credit. Prof. Charles is one of the most influential professors I've had at BYU. Truly cares about her students and helping us succeed in the class. She adapts the reading material to each class based on areas of the world we are interested in. I would highly recommend taking a class from her!

Professor Charles is AMAZING!!! There is a TON of material to cover and a lot of reading, but she did her best to keep things manageable and not assign anything unnecessary. Professor Charles is a magical human being. I was inspired by her in every single class. The class is a lot of work (mainly reading) and is VERY group work focused. I'm not usually a fan of group work but the way this class was set up made it fun, though pretty time consuming. I would HIGHLY encourage everyone to take this class - I loved it.

She is so kind, but honestly a little bit disorganized. Lectures were engaging, but all over the place. She really cares about the success of her students and will work with you to get you the help that you need. LOTS of group projects and out of class work, like almost all of the work is group work. When she says exams are difficult, she means it.

She's SO kind, but I think the class structure should improve. We have a lot of "games" aka group projects that end up taking up more time than lectures, which makes tests a bit harder. I wish she spent some more time directly preparing us for tests. A TON of reading. If you just need this for a GE, I recommend looking into other classes.

Professor Charles is caring and wants her students to succeed. She also tailors class to study literature that interests her students. It's a ton of reading. There's one essay but a ton of digital dialogues required to get the GE writing requirement. Tests are hard but manageable. She'll send emails with required content she didn't get to in class.

She prefaces the class by saying that exams can be difficult, but you'll be fine if you understand the readings well. She is an amazing professor and works tirelessly for this class. Amazing professor she cares so much about literature and her student. You have to enjoy groupwork and class participation to enjoy this class. There is no way to multitask through the lecture and still get a good grade. Overall I enjoyed the class. There was a lot of mandatory reading and the tests were very detailed.

Professor Charles is so inspirational! I loved how passionate she was but the readings were really heavy which was hard because I felt like I never had enough time to get through everything. The topics she has are really spiritual and emotional but they make you feel like you can change the world. She is the hardest and most rewarding professor.

Prof. Charles is SUCH a good teacher! GWS class is fascinating, and her love for GWS is contagious. It's a lot of a lot of content, and her tests are very specific. In any other class, I would have been completely overwhelmed. But, because I am passionate about Global Women's studies, and Prof. Charles shared her passion, it was doable and fun.

She is great at teaching this class. She gives you a TON of reading each day so it is a lot to stay on top of and the assignments are really big, but she is super understanding about extensions and gives them pretty freely. She does great at tying things into the gospel and the class is pretty interactive and interesting.

I took GWS 390R with Professor Charles and she was amazing. She really loves all of her students and is willing to work with you no matter what. She is so knowledgeable about GWS topics and the writing process. This was a research class and she made it engaging and interesting - it's clear she's passionate about her work.

GWS is the best class ever. She is so passionate and I wish I could draw this class out over the course of many semesters so we could dive deeper. She is so kind and you can access her out of class super easy. You definitely have to read for this class, but everything is so interesting it doesn't even feel like a chore. Everyone should take this!

Prof Charles is incredibly kind, and an amazing professor. I learned so much about Global Women's studies in this class. There are quite a bit of readings, but they are very manageable. Very manageable papers as well, and if you've done your homework and been in class, the tests are fairly easy as well. Take this class! It's awesome.

I love Professor Charles. GWS was an incredible class and helped me learn so much. I was able to really connect to my classmates. It is clear she cares about her students and will go out of her way to make you feel comfortable and cared for. She likes to add a lot of information to each class, so it often behind, but never overwhelming.

I actually took Prof Charles for CMLIT 211 but that wasn't a course option. I loved Prof Charles and her class! It's not the easiest GE, but I learned so much that was actually applicable. She cares so much about her students and gives great feedback. Super flexible and willing to work with you, she really wants all of her students to succeed!

I've never had a teacher who cares so much about their students. She's engaging and tries to make learning fun. Super understanding. I absolutely love her. I took CMLIT 211 from her but its not an option yet. Highly recommend taking a class from her!

This review is for CMLIT211. I have to admit, it took me a second to warm up to her teaching style because it's so different than what I'm used to. It was a little scattered at first, but the second half of the semester was so much fun! She does a lot of group work and a lot of readings, so keep that in mind! But overall an amazing professor

Prof Charles is a great teacher, and she really cares about her students. The class is HEAVILY group project-based with a fair amount of reading. Studying for tests is hard, but if you pay attention and read, you'll do fine. That being said, she is very flexible and willing to help and solve problems.

Prof Charles is a nice person who clearly cares about her students. The class is group project-based with lots of reading each day. 2 unit exams and 1 essay. Digital dialogues every class. Her tests are HARD, so you have to participate, and do the readings to know specific quotes and info. Her lectures were okay, but often rushed and inconsistent.

Prof Charles is sweet, caring, and flexible. There's ALOT of groupwork so come prepared.. Also, there's a good chunk of reading due before each class and there's only 2 exams, STUDY FOR THEM. The framework of the class is different but everything is manageable! English classes aren't my favorite which is why I gave the difficulty level a 4.

I loved this class. It is a lot of work but for a literature class this is about as easy as you can get. I was worried because of all of the bad ratings but honestly she's my favorite professor I've ever had. Assignments are easy to follow and tests are easy if you do the assignments. As an engineering major, this is the best way to take lit.

Professor Charles is an extremely caring professor. As a business major who hasn't taken a history class in years, I was really nervous for this class, but Professor Charles did a great job at making me feel supported and like I could succeed. I would highly recommend taking any class from her because she deeply cares about her students &hercourses

Professor Charles is a wonderful, caring teacher and her classes are fun and easy to pass. The only caution I have is that participation and attendance are super important, so if you struggle to get to class on time or plan on having absences this could affect your grade.

Professor Charles is hands down THE SWEETEST KINDEST professor I have ever taken a class from. She really cares about each of her students and wants to help. This class has 30-40 pages of reading per class period and lots of group work, and had to study HARD for the tests. But Professor Charles is soooo helpful and wants you to succeed.

Professor Charles is a very kind person. That being said, expect to talk about a lot about feminist stuff. Sometimes it felt like I was taking an ancient feminism class instead of word literature. This isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're into that. Class felt disorganized at times. Vague preparation material made it hard to prepare for tests.

She wants you to succeed, and even though I was taking this for a GE, I really enjoyed it and learned things that I feel were valuable. She's a little scattered, so if you know that will bother you, decide accordingly. But I loved her class.

Not only will she put great attention to you as a student, but she will also stretch your ability to care about other cultures and peoples from the texts you read. I would 100% recommend her class if you want to learn how to more fully empathize with other cultures.

Professor Charles is a fantastic professor! She always tries to be better and asks for feedback. In saying that, there were aspects of this class I didn't like. There were a lot of readings and the exams could be quite hard, sometimes asking niche questions that weren't covered in class. The first 30 minutes of class were also often wasted.

I probably would have had a much tougher time in this class if Prof. Charles wasn't so awesome - she really works hard to make the material fun and engaging. Her teaching style is unique, but once you get a feel for it it's very helpful. The tests can be surprisingly tough, though, so make sure you do all the readings and take good notes!

Professor Charles was great! I loved her enthusiasm for the content and the readings that she chose to assign. You should be prepared to read quite a bit, but not as much as other classes that fill the same GE. The exams were a bit hard to study for, so take good in-class notes.

It was her first semester teaching CMLIT211, so a lot of things were ported from a different class and forced to meet the curriculum (confusing, but will be fixed). She cut the reading down, so you get 90% of the big picture with only 10% of the homework. She also has connections, and will bring in a guest lecturer sometimes, a real treat.
