The group work's instruction is really unclear. Online quiz every week-read the material and watch the movies
Sometimes her lectures are one-sided; she claims that she wants to emphasize the importance of not a single story about an issue, but many different stories, when sometimes in the way she presents issues, she only provides one story. I think if she cited more credible sources with her stats, it'd be a lot easier to understand her point of view.
If you make the mistake of giving insight that doesn't align with her personal opinions, prepare to lose your head. Also, the project instructions (there are three in the semester) are extremely vague. Try and take this class with Perry if at all possible.
I absolutely LOVED Professor Mislan. Her lectures make you evaluate your own beliefs and see things from different perspectives. She brings up topics that are difficult to talk about, but that need to be discussed. Mislan shows great videos and articles in class to lead the discussion and they are always relevant and helpful.
Does not grade assignments in timely way. Does not provide feedback. Seems angry and insecure. Not the best professor. Avoid if you can.
2 Essay tests, each 15% - very toughly graded. You have to go to class and you need to know concrete examples of what was said there about each topic. Online quizzes every week about homework readingsfilms. Huge semester long group project. Common sense topics but overcomplicated to the point where it's hard to get an A.
Honors journalism student here She is the most passive-aggressive professor I've ever had. My friend described it well when he said, "It's like she thinks we are dogs and can only interpret tone. Does she know if she says really condescendinghurtful things in a nice way, it is still condescendinghurtful?"
She likes to repeat that this class is not about our personally opinions yet she contiunusly expresses hers and will shoot down any opinions that don't agree with her. Tests are pretty much just to check if you go to class. Final project is vague. My advice would be to go to class, don't speak, get a B and never look back.
Not the worst. The thing about Mislan is: she's funny, and she's passionate about things like racism, queer theory, class politics, etc. But her delivery needs some fine-tuning. She's very critical of those who don't get on board with her ideas. ALSO, THAT GROUP PROJECT. For as lengthy as her instrutions were (5ish pages) they weren't very clear.
If you don't agree with everything she says, she hates you. This class is meant to open minds up to tolerate and embrace the diversity around you, but Mislan needs a lesson in that herself. Also, the group project is ridiculous mainly because there are 10 people in one group.
She constantly says that objectivity is the best policy, yet she clearly has a side on every issue and treats students that disagree with her like garbage. She is condescending and undermines anyone who opposes her views. The tests are hard and reference both readings and tons of documentaries. Just don't speak, bite your tongue, and go to class.
Mislan is biased. If you don't agree with her, don't raise your hand. This class has the potential to be AMAZING, but her teaching methods are pathetic. She just states her opinion with some John Oliver videos to back them up. Turn stuff in on time, make your group project something she'll gush over (i.e. her opinions given back to her) & bam, A.
Reading these comments made me question whether or not these were all people I had a conversation with. Everyone took the words right out of my mouth. I only hope her superiors read these and fire her. The class content had the potential to be amazing. The best thing that's happening to this class is that she will not be teaching it next semester.
Mislan was a very passionate teacher and I honestly thought she did a decent job of teaching this course though it is very obvious that she has an agenda (she admits it too). The lectures were long, theres a lot of reading and the tests will destroy your hand but in the end I learned a lot from this class that I definitely need for the future.
Her examples are misleading and bias, and she does not foster two-sided conversation. One of the worst teachers I've ever encountered.
For a class about remaining non-biased, respectful and fair in journalism, Mizzou has hired a stubborn, one-sided individual who has no respect for her students or the subject. It's her way or the highway, despite the fact that she promises that her class will be a safe place for understanding different viewpoints.
Teaches only one side to the argument. If you disagree with her, your ideas actually do get labeled as sexist or racist. Exams are based on opinions that are taken from movies and class material, so not actual facts. Also she provides minimal noteworthy material. Avoid this teacher.
She is the most passionate teacher I have ever had. I wish everyone at Mizzou was required to take this class. The tests are all essay and true/false but if you go to class (which you should because it's extremely interesting & informative) and do your readings you will be fine.
A flawed class handled by Dr. Mislan fairly well. The course identifies social justice issues and connects them to journalism coverage, but it rarely gives practical advice for making the industry better. The lecture style doesn't suit the topic well.
On the first day we were told the class would be open to any and all ideas. Just as long as the all mighty Christina Mislan approves. The same woman who cites "Everyday Feminism" over any credible news outlet. She talks at us like we are dogs and cannot understand tone. She is out of touch with the culture of the class and needs to be replaced ASAP
I enjoyed the topics of this class. I enjoyed the guest lecturers. I wanted to like Cristina. The issue is your opinion is valued only if it lines up with hers, which is problematic in a class that is based on opinions of how different controversial topics are seen/covered in media. The plethora of guest lectures were the saving grace of this class
Mislan is a hypocritical, close-minded person. She started the class by saying that the room was a safe space to discuss anything. We had one discussion the entire semester and she didn't lead it. When one kid tried correcting her on an incorrect stat she practically shamed him in front of everyone. The only thing I learned was from a guest lecurer
If you use a laptop or recorder to take notes, look elsewhere. No electronics are allowed in class. Mislan just came off to a lot of the class as very quick to snap, and her viewpoints can turn off many people including me. Not the best choice for a class based off of different controversial topics. Wasn't always looking forward to come to class.
There are weekly quizzes. Some readings can take you a while. Be prepared to read a lot.
Attendance was not mandatory but she claimed to know if you came. I did skip occasionally and was fine. Some lectures are interesting, others are just her forcing her opinion on you. I would only take her again if I had to; I dreaded the class because of her attitude. The content was not bad. I did well on all tests solely studying the night before
J2000 was an interesting class I took this semester. I actually enjoyed the various topics that were covered in class despite the many papers we had. Dr. Mislan is very knowledgeable and you get a sense that she does extensive research. I thought she could sometimes be "unapproachable" and I would usually ask my question to the TA.
I am as leftist as they come, but I couldn't stand this class. It just felt like we were being taught to be as performatively "woke" as possible. Discussions were useless and Mislan was quick to shame people who had valid questions. Makes you watch movies that you have to pay for and includes questions about them on quizzes which is ridiculous.
There's no room for nuance or debate in this class--what Dr. Mislan says is essentially canon. At times, the subject matter is very tailored toward white people and this seems a bit insulting to non-white students who have to sit through a basic lesson: how not to be racist. Also, Dr. Mislan makes students use/purchase three streaming services.
The worst part of this class is not Mislan's opinionated lectures, but rather her cynical attitude towards life in general. Most days, I feel hopeless about the state of the world after leaving this class. The course content is important, and Mislan is very smart, but it shouldn't be mandatory that we have to learn about every injustice ever.
I really enjoyed Dr. Mislan/her passion for the class. What so many people are perceiving as "cynicism" or "radicalism" is simply just the display of someone with a deep knowledge and understanding of the injustices that so many people face. A great class to learn how to think outside of yourself, something so many MU students apparently need
Tests in this class are so confusing. Questions are worded poorly and the answers are way too similar. She doesn't allow technology in class, and notes aren't as good as they could be if I were to type on my laptop. There is absolutely nothing on the canvas page that would help if you were to miss class.
If you have the option to take J2000 with any other professor besides Dr. Mislan, do it. What is supposed to be a lighthearted but serious class was turned into something completely different because of Cristina Mislans attitude towards topics and students. She is awfully arrogant and passive aggressive. Talks to students like we are babies.
If you are a visual learner, I would not recommend her as a professor. Although phones are banned in the classroom, I'd recommend secretly trying to take photos of the Powerpoint slides to write down later and use class time to write everything she says. Most of the test questions are about one sentence things she says. Tests are trick questions.
Dr. Mislan has honestly been the most politically biased professor I have ever had at Mizzou. She does not teach, she pushed her political ideations onto the class. She is rude and snarky to those who do not agree with her. I do not recommend taking J2000 with her at all.
I felt like she didn't really care about the success of her students. The last 4 weeks of class were all guest lectures or documentaries and she didn't do anything. She loves writing answers on tests that all mean the same thing but written differently. The class average on the last exam was a 53% in a class that should be easy.
The class structure is awful. Very few grades that are all worth a lot of points. The tests are probably the worst I've ever taken. Super opinion based and all of the answers basically mean the same thing. The average on the final exam was a 53%. Doesn't count attendance but bases the tests on one thing she said in class weeks before.
Cross-cultural journalism is an extremely important topic, but this class felt like a waste of time, and more like checking off a box than anything productive. Dr. Mislan is not flexible, and lectures are pointless when it comes to encouraging critical thinking and discussion, and yet also unhelpful for the extremely difficult/subjective tests.
Professor Mislan grades based on personal ideology rather than objective facts. I was really excited about this class but her grading and the way she talks down to students is a massive power trip. Avoid this course at all costs.
Very unorganized. Lectures the entire time. Final project is worth 50% of your grade.
Very few grades and confusing test material.
Wish I had dropped this class at the beginning of the year. Professor Mislan is one of the most biased and outright disrespectful people I have ever met. She ignores people in class who have different views than her and actively alienates students in class. If there is any other teacher for this class, go to them.
Discussions often veered towards moralistic shaming rather than learning about journalistic inclusion and issues. Students who held different views, or spoke up in disagreement were openly mocked, being called "a**holes" and "fascists" by Dr. Mislan. Personal views were tested rather than objective questions.
Moral indoctrination upstaged objective learning in every lecture the entire semester. Only 3 exams and 1 group project make up 90 percent of the grade.
I have never disliked a class so much. She is passive-aggressive to her students, her tests are purposefully confusing, she doesn't allow any technology to write notes, she is not flexible at all, and her students are afraid to speak up or ask questions. I would 100% recommend finding another professor for this class if you can.
If you can take this class with any other professor (even if it is a different semester), do it. She talks down and belittles her students. The class does not feel like a safe space for learning and discussion. Her multiple choice tests have the same four statements re-worded four different times so it is impossible to find the correct answer.
If I could give Professor Mislan a zero, I would. She is extremely condescending and has no time for differing opinions. The final project was worth 50% of the class grade. I had something like a 93.7% in this class before it. I received an 89% on the final which dropped my grade to an 89.8%, and she refused to round it up. Avoid her at all costs.
Dr. Mislan is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The class was extremely unorganized and she was extremely unhelpful when it came to the final project. She didn't even have a rubric for a long time. Her tests are ridiculous because the answer choices are all basically the same. I went to every lecture and still did badly on all the tests.
Professor Mislan openly disrespects students in the class based on their personal views, in a class where she preaches a 'safe space'. Her condescending teaching style makes learning extremely difficult. Take any other professor for this class if possible.
Course material and topics were all over the place. Poor professor with powerful biases towards students.
Professor Mislan's bigoted views and cynical attitude toward students made this class burdensome. Called students extremists for challenging her lecture points that were solely based on personal ideology. I would consider myself a liberal but her mistreatment of students based solely on political affiliation was astounding. Do not take this class.
Do not take this class. Professor Mislan puts little to no effort into her students and over half the class was guest lecturers. The classes where she lectured were essentially ideological indoctrination. The final project is half of the grade and the rubric is not helpful. Does not allow technology in class and does not post lecture videos.
After reading other comments, I am glad I am not alone and that I share the same sentiment. Cristina Mislan maliciously alienates, vilifies, and disparages students with differing opinions. Take this class with another professor.
Professor Mislan's biased views were damaging and discriminatory toward students. Used prejudiced rhetoric that excluded dissenting options and discouraged open dialogue. Does not follow the textbook and instead tests solely on Professor Mislan's ideology. Ignorant class policies show she cares more about indoctrination than success of students.
Dr. Mislan's research is really as a professor is interesting, and she clearly cares about students and the topics she teaches. She respects diversity and values multiple opinions. She challenges students to think beyond their worldviews and understand their unique situated knowledges. Students can expect to read and discuss in this class.
Lectures matter in this class, but the subject matter is important to journalism. J2000 teaches students to identify power structures and the role the media plays in either challenging or reinforcing harmful narratives about people and places. Dr. Mislan is an expert in this field, and her lectures are always interesting.
This class requires that you attend regularly, but the professor also offers office hours and is understanding. This is an important class, and we need more like it!
I took this teacher last semester and thought I would warn other students. Professor Mislan referenced the textbook less than 5 times in total. Tests were on her personal views rather than facts in a class where she publicly mocked and made fun of students who held different views. Discourages open discussion and is condescending towards students.
I was excited about this class it became clear that there would not be any constructive discussion surrounding Journalistic Inclusion and Culture. Professor Mislan used racially prejudiced and outright disrespectful rhetoric toward students with different perspectives. Only perpetuated the "single stories" she claims to be fighting against.
Professor Mislan is the worst teacher I've had at Mizzou. Her class was disorganized, and she put little to no thought into her lectures and constantly talked down to and vilified students. Someone in the journalism industry should understand that using racially prejudiced rhetoric to propagate her own opinion is completely unacceptable.
Professor Mislan's situated knowledge superiority complex makes this an unsafe space for constructive discussion of topics affecting journalism. She only calls on people who agree with her extremist agenda and shames students (including name-calling) who disagree. Most of the class is afraid to raise their hands in fear of retaliation. Stay away.
I wish I had read this page before I took the class, I would have dropped it so quickly. Cristina is a bad teacher and grades based on views rather than facts. Mizzou did the J-school a disservice by hiring her.
Prof. Mislan takes what should be an incredibly important class and turns it into an inessential one. She rarely talks about the practical uses of these issues in journalism. Instead, she tries to be "intellectual". However, if you know truly anything about the issues, her lectures provide no new info and if you don't, you won't learn anything.
I didn't wear my seatbelt on the way to class in hopes that I die on the way.
Rude, disrespectful, and has a habit of either ignoring or make the process difficult in terms of fulfilling people's disability accommodations. Not a good professor and makes a mockery of the serious issues discussed in the class with her deeply unserious approach to the class curriculum.
Dr. Mislan was an excellent instructor in Women & The Media. She did a wonderful job leading insightful and culturally relevant class discussions. This class gave me a strong theoretical foundation for feminist reporting that will stick with me for the rest of my career. Highly recommend for anyone, but especially those seeking a fresh perspective.
I struggle for words to describe Professor Mislan. A complete lack of empathy towards disabled and lower class individuals combined with her vehemently constant racial prejudice against white members of her class is astonishing. Class is execrable without her biases, following no structure, syllabus, or book. Final project grading is subjective.
Worst teacher ever. Stay away. Completely and utterly biased, does not teach the content and instead teaches her opinion rather than fact. What could be such a cool class was turned into a period where she ripped on people that didn't agree with her views. Upset with the MU Journalism school for hiring her. Wish I could give her a negative -100.
Biased- doesn't care about teaching the required materials and only wants to get her opinions across.
I generally thought that Professor Mislan was a fine teacher. People that are talking about her "trying to indoctrinate" her students clearly just don't want to examine their own biases, which is 90% of this class, in my opinion. I've yet to finish the class, but I will say that the final project is fairly vague, but that isn't wholly her fault.
I really do not appreciate how one-sides Dr. Mislan is. You have to be a teachers pet journalism major and suck up to her in order to get a good grade. Come to class so you can take notes for the test, but be prepared to not get a good grade because if your a normal person like me and not a try hard smart student you do not go "in-debth" enough.
Wish Profes
I wish that Professor Mislan would practice what she preaches and examine her own biases. Beyond that the class structure is just plain bad. Lecture slides with no sources, zero reference to the text book beyond syllabus week, and a vague completely subjective group project. Cristina is a genuinely bad person as much as she is a bad teacher.
Where do I begin? Cristina's inability to teach is astounding. 2/3 of classes were guest lectures (her former students) & movies. Makes prejudice claims in class saying, "there is research to back that up," and then never gives any actual research. Creates a toxic class environment where by the 2-3d week no students wanted to answer her questions.
The MU J-School needs to consider removing this professor. As a student with excellent journalism performance, I had to withdrawal from this class because the exams were so poorly graded, despite me receiving a 98% on the final project. I have never had a worse teacher in my whole academic career. Her teaching has 0 relevance to journalism.
I'll save you some time with what this teacher "teaches": Don't be racist in journalism :/ By the end of the lecture you'll feel like you know less about journalism than going into it. It's clear MU forgot that they're still paying Mislan to stand in front of students and rip apart their chosen profession for an hour and 15 minutes. Disappointing.
Dr. Mislan is, no doubt, the most ineffective professor I have ever encountered. She wastes class time on soapbox speeches, shows no depth in teaching, creates a hostile classroom environment, and is rude to students and guest lecturers. For the good of School of Journalism, she must either dramatically improve or show some respect and resign.
If the School of Journalism has any respect for its students and it's reputation, they should fire Dr. Mislan. Christina is a nightmarishly awful professor. I'm actually shocked she landed a job at one of the most globally respected journalism schools in the world given how terrible she is at teaching.
I tried to give Mislan a chance, but she was unbearable. She doesn't post slides, doesn't give back tests, doesn't allow any technology and will call you out in the middle of class if she sees you with your laptop/phone, and lectures are unorganized. She's extremely difficult and agonizing to work with. Take this class with Dr. Porter if you can.
As another student said, I gave Professor Mislan over half of the semester a chance - I showed up to nearly every class, and have been uncomfortable due to her teaching her opinions and her attempts to indoctrinate students. Half of the class hasn't been there due to her opinionated lectures as it is a waste of time. Avoid and take with other prof.
Dr. Mislan was so rude. While I agree with so much of what she says, she presents her ideas in a tone to make students feel bad for not knowing it. I would recommend anyone take this class in the fall with Dr. Porter.
Dr Mislan is one of the most disrespectful teachers I've ever had in my life. She actively shames people in front of the class and will call you out if she doesn't agree with your answer. She only calls on certain students and her lectures make no sense. I would genuinely hope for every class lecture to be from someone else other than her.
Dr. Mislan should NOT be a professor at Mizzou, she is unorganized, incredibly biased to her extremist pov, (coming from a liberal myself). Dr. Mislan teaches on a soapbox and doesn't allow for any expression of other ideas. I've never been in a journalism class where people were afraid to speak up until now, because of how she bullies students.
Definitely the most frustrating class I've taken in college. Instructor was overly opinionated and was very self-righteous, often interrupting guest lecturers (which we had one pretty much every day-this lady had maybe 5 lectures the entire semester). It's a required course at the J-School, so take it in the fall to get the better instructor.
Professor Mislan was the worst teacher I have ever had at any level of education. Teaching extremist opinions is not journalism. Shaming and retaliating against students publicly in class (as well as when I went in for office hours) was completely uncalled for. I have written to administration about her and hope that Mizzou wakes up and fires her.
I feel guilty getting an A- because it means that on some level this insidious human being agrees with what I say.
If I had a nickel for every time Professor Mislan aggressively put down or shamed a student's opinion in class, I would be able to pay my semester's tuition.
one-woman cult with a syllabus
To describe Professor Mislan using her own words: situated knowledge superiority complex with a heavy victim mentality. I am as liberal as they come and she was so extreme it was hard to listen to. Showed a film with a scene that portrayed sex trafficking in the LGBTQ+ community and she praised it as acceptance. Seriously disturbed professor.
I have a different perspective than the other students commenting on here. I am a Jewish student on campus and feel unsafe in Professor Mislan's class. Her discussion of Palestine as well as research she published in 2019 were both blatantly Anti-Semitic. Really disappointing to see coming from someone who wants everyone to "examine their biases".
The day we had a fire drill in class was the best day of my life because I got a 5 minute break from her class.
Easily the worst professor I've had. She rambles about her own opinions instead of teaching journalism, posts no materials, and grades are a mystery until the end. Mizzou should seriously reconsider her place in the program.
Never rolled my eyes so much in a class. WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
Do not take this class. Most of the time rate my professor pages are just students with bad grades complaining but Cristina Mislan is a detriment to the J-school.
I attended every class this semester, took thorough notes, made a study group with other students, and still struggled with her exams. Does not care about the success of her students, gives no feedback and is not open to challenging questions. The first half of classes was wildly different that the second half after she knows students cannot drop.
She should be fired. She doesn't even teach her own lectures, just brings in guest lectures to teach for her. She shows up to class a minute before it starts or late, but expects students to stay after class. She is also SO INCREDIBLY BIAS. I'm a minority who has experienced racism and I fail her tests. Please make that make sense.
This class was awful. She is incredibly biased and makes her students feel anxious and scared about the state of the world. No optimism at all. She doesn't even teach herself and just brings in random guest lectures. The exams are also very difficult. She seriously needs to be fired because the way she teaches is simply unethical.
As a black woman of color, this class was completely unbearable. Cristina attempts to be as performatively woke as possible while simultaneously holding and voicing biases against impoverished and disabled individuals. Placing black and brown individuals on a pedestal while ripping apart others in class is not acceptance, it's dangerous prejudice.
This class is essentially how to virtue signal 101. Class content is not found in the syllabus and test questions were not based on objective book content (or had any research whatsoever to back them up). If you are willing to be extremely performative and pander in the exact was Professor Mislan likes, you will do well.
AN HONEST ONE: Christina is not that bad. Most people here are upset that they have to confront complex systems of harm in society. Yes, Christina is a leftist. Yes, she's gonna call people on stuff. YES, IT IS OVERBEARING AT TIMES. Overall, these people are dramatic. You'll like her course if you're smart and take journalism seriously.
Worst class I've taken. Dr. Mislan bans laptops, lectures are disorganized, and exams are overly complex with no rubric or feedback. Grades hinge on 10 assignments, with one group project worth 50%. Her teaching style demonstrates her need to be "heard." Take this course with another professor!
“Most people here are upset that they have to confront complex systems of harm in society.” I think this sums up the problem. There is a way to go about confronting these issues that is not shaming students. The tone of this comment is condescending; so was this class the entire semester. Justifying political bias because you agree is ignorant.
This is the worst professor I have had in my time at MU. The 1st day of class she told us that she didn't give a f**k about journalism students. She had clear favorites in her class & those were the only students she would call on, had unclear grading expectations & would refuse to meet students at office hours or to clarify tests & assignments.
Unorganized, opinion based (and I'm liberal!) no feedback, no clear direction given for assignments, projects or tests, even when asked. Refused to meet with students during office hours after midterm tests or help students learn what she is looking for when grading tests, cancelled all office hours until students just gave up. Worst class yet.
TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR FOR THIS CLASS. I was looking forward to this class and its content. She is too unorganized and not interested in teaching students, just giving her opinions. She doesn't provide detailed direction for tests, assignments or projects and refuses to answer questions when asked for details. She is just awful.
This class was disappointing. Mislan had a negative attitude, stating she "doesn't give an F*** about journalism." The course was disorganized, with vague lectures and little guidance on exams. Materials/rubrics weren't posted on Canvas. There was favoritism and a lack of support, making it unwelcoming. I recommend avoiding this class.
I was excited to take this class because DEI is a passion area of mine and I know the importance of examining my own biases. Yet this professor made me HATE the topic and I now have limited desire to learn more. She is disorganized, vague in her grading and inaccessible to students. She picks her favorites and everyone else can go pound sand.
I am appalled that the Missouri School of Journalism allows this professor to teach at such a prestigious institution in its field. Not only is the class unorganized, this professors behavior should be categorized as unethical and be investigated by MU.
This was the worst professor I have had at Mizzou. I am progressive and open-minded, and she still offended me many times. She was cold and off-putting every time we would ask her for feedback on assignments. Every class was just political rants with zero neutrality. When talking about Gaza she referred to the group that 'runs and owns everything'
Confusing multiple choice tests with vague answers (and no source or textbook to prove which is correct). Told student in class that he should not speak because his ancestors enslaved hers. As a journalism professor, told white students they cannot cover black stories. Genuinely disappointing. Talked down to and belittled students constantly.
Cristina walked into class every day with her coffee, a nice outfit, and a clean purse every day while telling students they are bad people for having a heteronormative race and sexual orientation. Told my close friend in class that she could never feel the oppression Cristina has felt in her lifetime, while she is living below the poverty line.
Canvas is confusing (there is bonus points for students who create test questions for her, something she never mentioned), and grading has no rubric basis. Genuinely a bad person as much as she is a bad teacher. Uses situated knowledge and the intolerance paradox to legitimize berating students on their opinions. Drop this class genuinely.
Genuinely one of the worst professors on the planet
Dr. Mislan was a good teacher. She's incredibly intelligent, and I felt supported by her. My main problem with her course Gender and Media were the people in it. Don't take this class if you're not ready to be judged if what you say isn't liberal enough. The people were so intense and I had classmates who were afraid to speak up because of it.
