This lady is absolutley insane! She treats you like you are in middle school. You have to ask to use the restroom (last time I checked we pay for school) Then she makes you sign a stupid contract about her expectations! As if we were kids! If you fail the mid-term you fail the entire class, so she's pretty saying give up if you fail in the middle!
She is a complete nutcase. The first day, she said she didn't care if we memorized facts. IN A HISTORY CLASS!!! She only cares how you "feel"about important events in history. And if you don't turn in even one assignment, you fail the ENTIRE CLASS! Avoid this professor at all costs!
I have heard many people pan this teacher. I found her lectures to be intresting. If you do all the required work and pay attention you should make it through just fine. I found her to be a very nice person that has gotten a bad rap from students who didn't want to work for their grade.
I was crazy about the professor. The class is full of essay work and takes long hours to complete. I actually felt as if I earned my grade! Ms. Johnson is a super intelligent lady! She helped me care about history for the first time in my life.
More demanding of a history class. Several short essays and one long paper at the end of the semester. Also, you are required to read a lengthy novel. I enjoyed her lectures and thought she was very nice, but the class was difficult.
Really nice teacher, but if you're not willing to do the work and study hard, you will fail. All classes are Lec (boring)and test's (3) are all eassay based.Several mini-papers and one large research paper (mandatory-don't wait till last min).
She is a very hard teacher, she stands at the front of the class and talks she never writes anything down. Not a class you can jack around in. AND IF YOU FAIL ANYTHING IN THE CLASS YOU WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS!!!
Avoid this class if at all possible. Essay drivin tests. In 50 minutes had to write 1 long essay, 2 short and 5 short answer. Will fail you if you fail mid-term. Was unclear on instructions and dropped my test grade from an A to a C. Hard to take notes. Lectures while informative are disorganized. Does not use the board enough. AVOID
It was a lot of lecturing, but no powerpoint or anything so you're required to listen and write fast. Said at beginning of the course you wouldn't have to know dates, then ended up you had to. Seems more like a writing class with a paper and critical reactions then long essay based tests. Sometimes was a little disorganized. Speak up in class.
Professor Johnson is a nice woman, but her class is not easy. I ended up with an A, but you MUST study and participate in class. Overall, I learned a lot, but since I am not that interested in history, I probably should have taken an easier class :)
I enjoyed her class very much She was very helpful to me, YES she is a hard you must do the work to get the grade but if you talk to her and show you are doing what you need to you will be fine. It is more than just the homework, critical responses, or tests attendance and class participation are just as important to her.
Hate Her Class
I think her class is good but it is hard at the same time. I feel as if she should use the board more for notes. She only gives two test but if you fail the test and if you do the homework you will do fine in her class. You must know your stuff. Overall i think she is an Fair teacher. It helps having someone of your own descent teach you.
Terrible teacher. Her opinion is the only one that matters. Treats you like a little kid. Avoid this class.
She makes it almost impossible to pass this class, especially if you don't do it her way. I never really focused on learning the things, just doing it her way.
She has been a good professor so far especially since I don't care for history very much. She goes really fast through the sections and is a little hard to keep up.
Nice lady, Calss was very hard. I hate history but did ok in the class and i didn't even buy the main book. tests are very stressfull because they are essay bassed. and if you fail the midterm or the final you fail the class. all in all you have to actually do work but i've learned more about history in this class than any others ive taken.
She is tough but thorough. Indeed her lectures are fast paced, but if you listen and take adequate notes (live by these notes by the way, tests are based heavily on them) you'll do fine. She requires quite a few essays, and is in strong opposition of multiple choice questions. I learned a lot in this class, an A is not likely though!
This lady is ridiculous. Many of her "facts" are based off of her own opinions and are completely wrong, having done further research on my own. She is rude, plays favorites more than any teacher ever, and her opinion is the ONLY opinion that matters. Final opinion: NUTS!!!
Do not take this teacher she is very very hard. You have 2 in class essays and midterm and final which are short answer and essay format which require tons of details in your writing or their is no chance at an A. I would advise another teacher or taking it another semester not worth reading three books and barely passing.
This class is difficult. It's stressful because the grade is based off of the midterm and the final (which are both in class essays.) She seems like a very nice woman, she's definitely very intelligent.
Only take this professor's class if you are up for a challenge. There were a lot of papers to write and three text books to read from. Contrary to popular opinion, she is very fair and willing to clarify things if you aren't understanding them. Do the work; turn everything in on time, and pass the tests and you will be fine.
I'm in her class right now, I got an 84 on the exam. I suck at History, i barely passed in high school. All you have to do is take notes and study like crazy before the exams and you'll do fine. It's not that hard to put some known facts into essays. She doesn't grade too hard. You just have to be able to put forth the effort. She's not bad.
She is **** towards whites. Nough said. Oh also a bit of a feminist. I am not the only one who feels this way many classmates agree.
Professor Johnson is a great lecturer. She does a good job keeping things in perspective. The class is really tough, but it's college, so that shouldn't be seen as unexpected. Every grade comes from some form of essay, so expect to write a lot. If there is any confusion, she is always happy to answer questions.
Had her online. Very few assignments and not very clear on what they require. Grades harshly and books can be boring. May be good in class but avoid online.
Ms. Johnson lectures most class periods and includes videos occasionally. Johnson clearly enjoys teaching and gives interesting facts. She isn't a hard grader, but you must complete all the work to get a decent grade. Show up to class and take good notes. Study in advance and you will be fine.
Professor Johnson, is interesting, You will learn a lot in her class when she decides to lectures..but mostly she will show videos and it had nothing to do with the midterm or final.. it her way of cathing up wiht other stuff. she is not organized. and she says one thing. then changes it. Dont expect an A you lucky for a B. Keep up with your work.
She has such a great perspective on the world, and does a phenomenal job at teaching modern philosophies and the influences they have in the world. She had a great book selection, but her class is time consuming. Read the material and go to class, and you'll without a doubt get an "A." If you want to learn something about the world, take her.
You won't receive an A. Simple as that. I worked hard the entire semester and received a C. It is supposed to be an American History class and ends up being an African American History class. EVERY test was strictly based on African American history and females. I have got A's in every history class i've taken with exception of this one.
Dr. Johnson is an interesting professor. She is a very fair grader. Do not get on her bad side though, always show up, do the weekly writing assignments and be engaged in class. She's very strict and straightforward, but it's only to help you.
by the time of the first test, you will have a notebook full of notes. the essay test is two questions and you have no idea of the subject of the questions so you study every single note then get to the test and it has nothing to do with any of the notes. she is quick to single people out and belittle them when they ask questions or disagree.
I enjoyed the way Crystal taught so much that I took two of her classes. I felt like for once I was getting graded on the quality of my work. She does not let you slack off. If you want an A in this class you better work for it. She was very engaging and easy to talk to. I would definitely recommend her to anyone interested in actually learning!
Her lectures aren't bad, but doesn't write much down and sometimes tells you what to write down. She uses pictures and videos at times. Her class isn't really that hard, but its only based on a few grades so the work and studying is crucial. I didn't miss one class and I passed with a A. You won't need the huge book, just the little one.
I liked her enough, but she made it really obvious who she favored. She singled out the people who utilized their laptops for notes. The large assignment does not follow the citation style and example she gave, so it was luckily I did decently on everything else. It's pretty difficult to get an A on tests, because there's always something to improve
I wrote a whole book of notes and studied it all for the test. It did not help because the tests are all essay questions and are about one specific thing that we learned. I wrote a paper in her class about the sources used to research, not even the information. Don't take her class. Bad teacher.
As a professor, she was awful! I would email her and she would email me a month later! Her syllabus and emails contradicted each other. She never gave feedback unless I asked for it. And somehow my grade was lowered because of extra credit. How does that work!?
She thinks she is better then everyone and has no problem letting you know. Her class is all lecture, she rambles on and on so quickly it's difficult to keep up and then she goes off on rants and never goes back to what she was originally talking about, so you have blanks in your notes which is all you have to study for her essay test's. AWFUL!
She is a very nice person but a strict teacher. She definitely covers more in depth on African - Americans than she needs to. We spent well over half of the semester talking about civil rights when we should have evenly covered all of the material. Her stupid Safe Assign doesn't work.. It said I plagiarized from 2 cites I don't even know about.
LOOK, This class is really easy, just do your work and take notes thats it. she is not a hard teacher and she's very fair. I slacked of the entire semester and got a C. the assignments aren't even hard and the test are really easy.
She is a non-responsive teacher. She doesn't interact with the student at all, when you ask her for clarification she gets offended and then says you are the only one who doesn't understand instructions. She is not clear on what she wants or expects of you as a student, she takes forever to respond to a question. I don't recommend her to no one!
J is the real deal.Yes she is hard, yes the material is tough. She trains you for the future. This was one of the best classes I have ever had.I still listen to Etta James because of her.Stop racism and suppression, she will develop you to the next level of education.J changed my outlook of life.Deal with it and drop the bs neg comments, do your work
After the financial aid deadline she quit taking attendance but she definitely still noticed who was coming to class. When I started struggling she was incredibly helpful but also very clear her syllabus is the law as should be with any instructor and she is also the division chair now but I wouldn''t worry about that. She is great.
I hated this class, she gives like 5 chapters to read in a month, with no contact in between. The tests aren't too bad, and the papers are pretty easy. Watch out she does grade those pretty rough. I just didn't like the lack of weekly structure. Decent enough to pass, just make sure you write the papers well, and read all the chapters.
This teacher is extremely unorganized. She takes off points for assignments then realizes that it was another student that made the mistake. She lists completely different unit chapters and deadlines in the Syllabus than are listed online. For example the syllabus will say quiz 2 covers chapters 19-28 but when you go to take the quiz it is 23-30.
This teacher does not care about the learning of her students. She discourages learning about this subject from any source other than the textbook. If you do not solely use the textbook your grade will drop significantly. Also, When you ask her for feedback she says things like "If I remember correctly..." Instead of taking the time to help you.
This professor is horrible. She does not let you voice your opinions about history & doesn't want you to "rephrase the book" who knows what she really wants! Her tests do not reflect the textbook readings she assigns AT ALL, & she is very unorganized. She doesn't give useful feedback, and only talks about your weaknesses and not how to fix them!
Great professor. I would take her again.
HORRIBLE! Took her online since History is an easy class but I was wrong. She had a clear grading criteria but when you complete an assignment, she knocks off points for things that she did not say she wanted and it's not even in the syllabus. She takes forever to grade assignments and does so last minute so they're half-assed graded. Never again!
She is very non specific, yet is very demanding. She does not give good direction and her "rules" and "directions" are extremely unclear.
I took this class in person, and it was 100% lecture. No powerpoint or anything, just her talking and every now and again she would write on the board. She doesn't always tell you when you should be reading the book, so make sure you ask. There are 5 one paged papers over chapters in the books. The test are all Written response... they're hard.
It is possible to pass, but be prepared to stress a lot when she gives the worst directions and refuses to clarify. If you answer correctly but your answer is not written like she would answer in her mind you are wrong. Stay away from this twisted person if possible. She is a mean one being. I think she gets a kick out students stress levels.
Dr. Johnson is not very caring or helpful when it comes to reaching out for help. She's extremely slow to give feedback or grade work - still waiting on a grade from our first assignment and the class has a week left. She does not respond to emails either. I've never had a more stressful online class.
I consider myself to be a history buff, so when I signed up for History 121 I was very excited. Little did I know I was not going to be enjoying a history class I was going to have to endure 16 long weeks of an english class disguised as a History class. I have asked what I am doing wrong and it took Crystal 72 hours to get back with me.
English class disguised as History. There are sooooo many papers in this class. The directions for each of these papers are also sometimes confusing. It seems like she just throws a bunch of big words in to sound smart, without actually knowing what they mean. She takes off points for things that she didn't even ask for in the rubric or directions.
Avoid at all times Finding the assignments and due dates arent clear. Beware you accidentally miss an assignment she wont let you do it.
Dr. Johnson is a good prof.! Learned more about history than ever before in her class. If your a slacker you won't pass. Not too many assignments but study your terms and notes! Pay attention in class and study ahead of time and you will do well. Only two tests mid term and final so take time studying. Great prof. answers and explains things well.
Awful teacher
The course was pretty straightforward. You are going to read the entire book chapter by chapter. There is a quiz on each chapter along with unit quizzes and tests every few chapters. As long as you read and understand the chapters you should be fine on these. There are essentially 8 essays due, 4 each of two different formats. I would recommend.
The only reason my grade was low was because of me. Clear instructions, due dates, etc. Just did not love that if we did not get to content in the class had to teach ourselves. Not hard if you're an average/ above-average student. The papers ppl are referring to were just prompts and you ALWAYS had options. Mid-term and final in this class.
Johnson has given me great and detailed feedback every time I turn in an assignment, which I really appreciate, which in my opinion makes up for the tough grading that she give to her students, plus the quizzes and tests are super easy, which additionally make up for the tough writing assignments.
Took this class as a joint class with Philosophy 203. Professor Johnson rarely gave any instructions on her assignments, was a tough grader, and often was missing necessary materials from her resources. Asking for clarification was met with "Everything is on Canvas" and "This has already been covered." Don't take her unless you're telepathic.
She gives so many papers and pretty much refuses to give you 100 percent. she also has us write reviews on stuff on like the 1619 project
She has papers due almost every week and will dock points for small details that weren't on the rubric. The tests are terrible. the questions are vague and are often about small details that she mentioned once and weren't on her slides or in the reading. Avoid this class at all costs.
Very challenging grading scale, too many long assignments.
Will call you out in front of everyone for glancing at your phone, having to leave class early, or not participating enough. Also, doesnt grade for weeks after an assignment is due.
Prof Johnson was a great teacher and she definitely knew the material. She was, in my opinion, very strict though. She had specific ways of things getting done, so you need to follow the grading criteria well. Other than that she was very knowledgeable.
Sometimes I try to sympathize with people who clearly have failed their careers in academia and are now stuck with a dead-end job at a community college--not this woman. She clearly spent zero time putting together the course yet expects students to somehow be able to succeed by reading the textbook alone, which is so inaccessible. Hope she's fired
ADHDphobic. will not be accommodating at all. Stay away!
Great teacher! She gives clear expectations! I took as a 8wk course there was lots of work but if you stay ahead of the curb you're good. If you miss a deadline she WILL NOT accept late work! Due by 10p, really due by 9:59. At 10p the system shuts down. DO NOT wait until the last min to submit b/c you can expect something to glitch or go wrong.
I did a learning community which just means that her class and another were taught pretty much together. I really liked her she was very upbeat and honest. She can be a tough grader but only cause she wants to help you be better. She is honestly one of the better professors I had.
She was disrespectful and very to the point, and she would not even discuss if there was an issue with your grade. Her syllabus didn't work, and she was insulting and not helpful when I asked for help. Do not take her classes.
Dr. Crystal Johnson was OK. Her lectures were interesting but the assignments were difficult and took time. I wouldn't recommend if you aren't super in to history. She is accommodating and allowed me to record lectures which was very helpful. She is very intelligent and I liked how she graded exams (read responses backwards to prevent bias).
Every class is a lecture with slides next to her. She talks in the same tone throughout teaching, and the assignments can be a lot. However, if you study well, you should be fine she is a nice person but she will not expect any late work under any circumstance.
She grades assignments very difficult and just stands up and talks with no change in her voice. No late assignments ever! Didn't give study guides for tests or tell us what the test was on. "test is over everything we learned" but there were so many notes and info. I would like a pinpoint. Tests weren't even over half the things we studied
I had no problem with Dr. Johnson, but a lot of my classmates couldn't say the same. I think if you really care about the content just because it's interesting then you should take her class. Sometimes the lectures are too heavy but overall I enjoyed her class. I have no reason to believe she doesn't grade fairly and with integrity.
Absolutely horrid professor. Do not take at all costs. Lectures are boring, homework is graded a month past the due date. Teacher accepts no late work but is two months late on grading. Mid term and final have no study guides and are extremely deviated from course material. Do not take at all costs
Worst history course i've ever taken. Do not take her if you enjoy history
WORST professor ever. WE are paying for this class to take. Psychically TOUCHING and closing other peoples computers, kicking colleagues out of class for LOOKING at their phone. EVEN if you are paying attention in class and taking notes she WILL call on you, if you respond or answer the lecture question wrong she makes you feel less than!!
Dr Johnson is very interactive with students during lectures, treats lectures almost more like conversations, and tells great stories. Not too tough a grader, but will not accept late work at all. Gives great feedback on papers, responds in a timely manner. Not a lively speaker, but if you are interested in her subject, take her for sure!
The class is worth 3 credits but with the amount of work given it feels like it should be worth 5. Rubric is unclear, grading takes forever, no study guides, and quite honestly felt more like an English class rather than a history. I do not recommend taking this class, its not worth the headache and hours worth of homework.
