This professor wasn't horrible, but she was far from great. The lectures are boring and hard to pay attention to. I feel like I learn more out of reading the book than going to lectures. Go to the lectures, though, because she makes little notes that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Also, she puts her lecture slides online.
I thought she was a pretty good professor. At every lecture she goes by a PowerPoint that she posts online, but she does make notes on the board. So, it's a good idea to attend...plus she takes attendance most days. The study guides she posts for the exams are exactly what you need to study.
Her lectures were really informative, but you have to go to class to understand the material. You can't find her notes anywhere else. She does have helpful study guides for the exams.
New teacher, not great. Hard tests
Awesome professor! Dr. McAlvin makes the subject matter easy to understand and tries to present it in a way that is interesting (even though bio isn't my thing). This class actually became one of my favorite classes!!! Also, she is very approachable and willing to help outside of class! I def recommend taking her class for Bio 101/102.
great professor! her tests can be a little difficult but you just have to read the questions carefully. She gives a lot of extra credit and is always willing to help. Making an A can be super easy.
I am not at all interested in Biology, but she kept lectures interesting. Her tests are hard, but she is incredibly helpful! I went to her office hours to go over tests twice, an both times she gave me points back. She is fair, kind, and loves her subject! I highly recommend her!
She is extremely helpful. I highly recommend going to her office hours after an exam. Don't hesitate to ask questions, and definitely go to lecture to get your attendance points.
just go to class. mandatory attendance taken with clickers. she really wants you to pass this course. available for questions, explains things very clearly. lectures based on her slides, which she posts online. she's cute, too
fantastic teacher...genuinley cares about your success in the class and is always willing to help. lectures are very clear for the most part. IF you attend class and study, you'll be sure to get an A.
I love her! Before this class I disliked biology. You can tell she loves what she teaches and she is so chill. Go to class for clicker points. She is very helpful and pretty easy if you read and study the mastering bio questions. Take her!
Great teacher. She cares about you learning and passing. Class is mandatory through clickers. Her tests aren't hard cause she puts her notes online.
Crystal is seriously the best!! Such a nice lady that genuinely has a passion for Biology. You don't even really need the textbook. Just do the MasteringBiology, memorize the study guides, keep up with the clicker points, and you will get an A. Really easy science class.
This is one of the best professors at UT! She is so helpful & really cares about her students and there grades! She also will sometimes give bonus assignments!
Dr. McCalvin is extremely enthussticabout helping her students learn and succeed I was hesitant at first to approach her about my test grade but after I did she helped me out a ton. Definately try to get her if at all possible.
She is a great teacher! If you have the chance, take her!! All of my friends have trouble in their bio classes, but not me. Her tests are harder than you would think but if you do the mastering, clicker ?s, and study guide, you'll do fine!
I like the way the class was taught but she does a lot of clicker questions and also her test are very wordy and hard to understand even if you do know the material it can be tricky.
very nice and sweet. offers lots of extra credit and usually takes 1 or 2 questions off the exam if most of the class missed it. i did not buy the textbook and anything she wants you to know she posts it on blackboard. also gives very helpful study guides for each exam. highly recommended!
she often reuses questions from mastering biology assignments on the exams which is great. very sweet lady.
Extremely easy class! Attendance is mandatory (you can miss 5 classes and still get full attendance points plus she does extra credit in class). Mastering is easy if you keep up with it, most answers are online. I bought the textbook and only use it to study for tests. 85% of test questions are DIRECTLY from mastering. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. McAlvin had one of the more interesting lecture I had this semester, and her clicker questions were super helpful when it came to boosting my grade. However, her exams were extremely wordy and a lot of questions didn't seem to relate to the study guide or her lecture slide content. It was an alright class.
I am not a science fan at all and I really enjoyed taking this class from Dr. McAlvin! She truly cares about the success of her students and she will do anything to make sure you get the help you need! Textbook not even needed! And I'm taking her next semester! Highly recommend :)
Dr. McAlvin is truly the best. She posts all notes on BB, makes study guides for each exam, and holds study sessions 2x a week. Attendance is mandatory (Clicker Questions), also many of the questions on her tests are straight from the homework. Textbook - completely unnecessary.
Dr McAlvin loves her classes because she loves Biology itself and it definitely comes through when she teaches. She tries her very best to make sure how she teaches is very clear. She even took time out every week to have study sessions for those who needed clarification about lectures. She is very willing to help if you dont understand.
If you have to take this class, TAKE MCALVIN. Seriously all you need to do is study the information she leaves on the study guides and do her mastering biology. You barely even need to go to class. I got an A in this class and I have C effort.
Cool teacher. HW, clicker points, and lab help you boost your grade so it's not just the tests. She will give you the opportunity to make a good grade if you put in work and effort.
TAKE HER! best bio teacher by far! not too much work and study sessions before test are extremely helpful. You get clicker points for attendance in class but you have like 15 extra points so you can miss some. I hated bio and got an A in the class.
Best teacher ever! Lectures and instructions are clear! Taking her again for 102! Holds study groups and extra assignments are easy and helpful
Awesome professor!! Almost every test question came from mastering biology, even the final exam, but obviously she can change that at any time. Lecture didn't really do much for me so I just went until I had all my clicker points and then stopped going. She has plenty of opportunities to get help if needed! Highly recommend her for Bio!!
She has great energy about the subject! Stopped going to class after I got my clicker points. The online homework is heavy on most tests. My book was an edition lower than the class and the study guide answers were in order as I read. Got it at McKays. Took her for 101 and 102 and loved her. Would recommend her to anyone!
By far the best biology teacher I have ever had! Test questions are very clear, and come straight from MasteringBiology. Lectures are pretty interesting and are very helpful! This class is an easy A as long as you put in some effort! Take Crystal!!!
Bio 101 was a good class, however I would recommend taking it during the Fall / Spring vice the Summer... The volume of information is ridiculous and the tests are every week... Prof McAlvin is a Rock Star, very helpful, very informative. I would recommend her as a professor...
Best teacher I have ever had! She is so helpful and explains everything so clear! I took Biology 101 in the summer and had no problems! You do have to do homework and study for the test but they are not difficult if you know the material! Straight forward and clear test questions. Questions come from mastering biology homework and clicker questions
Super nice, explains things very thoroughly, and repeats important details over and over! Very helpful with questions. Very easy class.
Dr. McAlvin is great! I think my lowest test grade was a 90. Just do (and study!) Mastering Biology, work on the study guide, get your clicker points, and you're golden. My TA wasn't that great and made lab a little more difficult than necessary, but I did well enough in lecture that I still made an A overall. Take McAlvin!
If you need to take 101 or 102, TAKE MCALVIN! She's friendly, speaks loud and clear, and has a good sense of humor. Her examples in class go beyond the textbook and she talks about some really interesting real world topics/studies related to biology. You do need to study for the exams, but many questions come from homework and clicker questions.
Dr. McAlvin is the BEST biology teacher ever! I took her with a slight interest in biology and she made it very interesting. She holds study sessions before tests and answers EVERY question you could have in full detail! Do not take biology from anyone else! Definitely attend her class, clicker points add up! She is the best!
Prof McAlvin is a ROCKSTAR!!! She loves Biology and her passion bleeds into her lectures... STUDY!!!
Prof McAlvin is a BOSS!!! Has my highest possible recommendation... Study Study Study... She is very helpful but you do have to do your part...
Awesome teacher! Has interesting lectures that really made me want to go to class. Goes a lot slower than the other bio teachers and really takes time to explain material. Her test are pretty each too if you study the study guide. Great teacher, take her!
I hate science of any kind so all science has always been hard for me. Dr. McAlvin is hands down the best science teacher I have ever had and her lectures are really interesting. She does a great job of applying real world info so its easy to relate to! If you ever need help she is more than willing to meet with you.
McAlvin is by far the easiest bio 101 teacher. If you go to class, and halfway pay attention, you'll easily make a B in the class. Her study guides for the tests are almost verbatim the questions that are on the exam, and she offers study sessions twice a week.
McAlvin is a really good teacher. She makes her lectures as interesting as possible and cares about her students. She would get off topic sometimes, and her study guides don't always follow what is going to be on the test. If you go to class, take good notes and pay attention you'll get an A.
Knows what she is talking about and is pretty awesome! Class is really basic and easy, but going and studying is key.
I really enjoyyed this class. Crystal knows what she is talking about and teaches in a way that uses current topics that people are actually interested in. She is easy to get along with and encourages you to ask questions in class. She is definitely worth taking if you take Bio 101 and 102.
Best bio teacher at UT I promise. As long as you go to enough classes, do the online homework (which wasn't much) and go to her review sessions you will get an A. She is such a reasonable teacher and wants you to succeed. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. However, you do need the online stuff.
One of the best professors ever! She wants her students to do well and makes a huge effort so that will happen. She makes it easy for students to make an A as long as you go to lecture and take notes. Don't buy the book! Get the online access code that's all you need. Make sure you have a good lab TA
Dr. McAlvin is a great Biology professor! I learned very important and relevant information from her. I have been out of school for many years and was afraid of taking Biology. She made it fun, interesting, and manageable. Take her if you need this class.
She is ridiculously boring but definitely the best Biology 101/102 teacher at UT. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS BEFORE THE TEST and do well in lab and you'll be fine.
Friendly and approachable teacher. This is not an easy class. Study guides are useless. She won't ask you basic questions, like "what is a plankton" on exams so the study guides are misleading. The exam questions are unnecessarily complex and difficult. There's no reason for this class to be so hard. Doesn't curve grades and no minus grading. Bad.
McAlvin is really chill. You don't always have to go to class but it definitely gets you a better grade. Takes attendance w/clickers. Got B's on tests w/out studying for them. She is also easy on the eyes. Work hard to get her as your teacher. You won't be disappointed.
She is a fantastic professor and so knowledgeable on the subject! I really disliked biology but she was so enthusiastic about what she teaches that I ended up really liking it. Her tests are pretty hard and studying is required but she grads fairly. I'd take her again if I had too
She's SUPER good at explaining things in-depth. Attendance is technically mandatory, although she's really lenient with it. Online homework is easy, and her tests are all based off of her powerpoints and clicker questions, which can be downloaded online (which saves you $200+ on the textbook). Take her, she's AWESOME.
You would be stupid not to take her. She is fantastic. Go to lecture and pay attention (take notes) get a good lab TA.. get an A.
Looking for an easy science class? Take Bio 101 with McAlvin. It is a VERY basic class. The labs are so easy they are annoying, and she takes attendance every day via clickers.. :( That was the worst part in my opinion because I really didn't need to attend class. Book is unnecessary.
She is an excellent professor. Not only is she very detailed in her lectures, but she provides study sessions outside of class if you still need help with the material. Clickers are needed for this class. She made a class I didn't want to take interesting. I actually didn't want to fall asleep in class or anything like that.
She makes Biology interesting and fun at the same time. As long as you attend lecture and pay attention you will easily get an A.
Great class! I hate bio but McAlvin makes it interesting! You don't need the book but you do need to go to class and take good notes. McAlvin is very approachable and helpful. Holds study sessions and she wants you to succeed.
She is really awesome, you'll like her if you take her. She is really nice and understanding, I overslept for a test one time, I never oversleep I emailed her right away and she let me take the test in her office hours. It's not a show up and get an A class so take nots and pay attention ,but its not one of those classes you need to study everyday.
Taking notes during her lectures is really helpful when studying for the tests. Her tests can be tough, but everything else is easy, I would definitely take her class again!
McAlvin is a great lecturer-she explains things so clearly! You need to go to class and take good notes because her tests are hard! However, she gives a study guide and covers everything in class that is on the exams. You can get a good grade in this class but you have to do your part.
Dr. McAlvin is a super nice person. She truly tries to help you do well, and cares if you know the information. I'd definitely take her again! Great class, but be weary of your lab TA.
She is very clear in all of her lectures and makes sure to go in depth. Sometimes the class can seem a little boring because she makes it so simple. She is very friendly and willing to help. Make sure you go to class because there are clicker points everyday. I would take her for all of my classes
The lectures are somewhat interesting. Go to class to get the easy clicker points. The tests are easy because the study guides tell you exactly what is on the test. If you try, it's an easy A.
She wants you to succeed so she's very available for help. She has study sessions to go over the study guides before every exam, I recommend going to these, and studying the study guides along with the mastering biology homework. Attendance is not mandatory but clicker ?'s affect your grade some, and they're easy if you go. I never opened the book.
I took her summer class so things were much more fast paced, which means way more homework and reading. However, she always made the lectures interesting. The first college class where I didn't skip any days. Just read the material before class and she clears everything up in lecture. Do the study guides!! She really is a great professor!
Dr. McAlvin is an awesome professor, and I would definitely take her again. I hope that I am able to later in my college career. If you have the ability to take her, do it.
She is an excellent professor! She is clear about what is on her exams and is always willing to explain things thoroughly when questions are asked. Online homework is usually pretty long, but she pulls questions straight from masteringbiology for the exam. Her enthusiasm helped to keep me interested, and I would definitely recommend her!
Extremely easy class but she's insanely disorganized. Lectures that should take one day at most get stretched out over a week and a half. Very easily distracted. However, tests are super easy if you do the mastering biology and the discussion is basically participation. Not a difficult class when you take it with her. Attendance is worth a lot.
She tries to make the class as simple as possible. You will need to read the textbook, though. Mastering Biology won't be easy without it. Also she does clicker questions so show up. I took a similar biology class before this, so if it's been a while since you've had biology, be prepared to study.
Crystal was such a nice and good teacher! She will help you on the tests if you have questions, and her grading is lenient and understanding! Discussion TAs are more of a pain in that they assign tedious work. Your weekly/bi-weekly homework is from Mastering Biology. I definitely recommend Dr. McAlvin!
Dr. McAlvin is a fantastic teacher. She is clear in what she expects of her students and will go out of her way to help accommodate them if there is a need. Is really interested in seeing students succeed and genuinely delights in helping students further their interest in Biology and science in general. Definitely would take again.
McAlvin was hands down my absolute favorite professor last semester. Although her lectures do cover the material you'll be using on the test, to get higher grades on the Masterings, I would suggest going ahead and doing the readings before class (it also makes understanding her lectures even easier). I'll be looking out for more classes with her!
Bio 105 is not too difficult of a class as long as you show up and pay attention. There isn't a lot of homework and gives very thorough study guides for tests. She is not a difficult teacher by any means, and I'd say definitely take her no matter what class it is for. Oh, and no textbook.
Dr. McAlvin is a very good professor. She is clear about expectations for her students and is extremely helpful when he is needed. This was her first Parasites and Pandemics class, and she did very well. I would definitely take this class again!
Dr. McAlvin taught this class for the first time this semester. It was clear that she loved the subject, but had no idea what she was going to teach. Some days would be taught like upper level biology, some like a high school level course on evolution. It was easy, but it was annoying to never really know what you were in for in a day's lecture.
Don't take BIO160 with anyone else but her. The best professor ever! She is a very nice lady, and she really cares about you. Her teaching style is pretty amazing. Would take her again in the future!
would strongly recommend, she is my favorite professor yet -- her lectures are entertaining, informative, and enjoyable; her powerpoints are online and are extremely helpful; most test questions come straight from the powerpoint and homework questions; attendance checked with in class questions on learning catalytics; if you try you will be fine.
Definitely recommend. I read the chapters before tests and went over her powerpoints and made an A easily. A lot of test questions come from the mastering homework, her powerpoints, and in class activities. I learned alot and class was enjoyable so go and your attendance grade will help your final grade. Would take again
Great professor, I enjoyed her lectures but it was not necessary to attend class for every single lecture. Keep up with the Mastering homework and don't let your in-class participation grade get too low. Allow yourself plenty of time to study for exams, as a lot of material is covered in the class.
I loved her. She lectured very well, yet all you really need is to read the powerpoints to learn that information. Learning catalytics can be used anywhere in case you miss class. Biolit was a waste of time. Study your HWs and the powerpoints and you should be good. I would have taken honors if it was offered this semester.
Study the mastering biology homework for the exams. Show up to lecture because she teaches you things that aren't so clear in the book. She has a wonderful attitude and actually wants students to understand the material. Don't be afraid to ask questions during the lecture.
I read the chapters and went over slides before every test and made at least a 95 on them all. A lot of test questions come from Mastering, her slides, and the in class worksheets which she posts to BB. Would definitely take again if she teaches any more of my sciences. Enjoyable class and learned a lot
This was the first time this class was taught so there was no textbook - straight lecture. She's pretty clear in her lectures and she posts her slides online. She does have clicker questions so going to class every once in awhile is a good idea. Rarely any homework. Only one paper. 3 exams that are easy to pass if you do the study guide.
Very easy class. The homework is quick, and the tests are fine if you fill out the study guides she gives you. There are clicker questions in class, so attendance is a good idea.
Dr. McAlvin was an amazing professor. She taught everything you need to know for the exams in lecture. As long as you fill out the study guides and do the mastering biology homework, the exams are very easy. Go to class for participation points, do the mastering homework, and do well in bio lit and this class is an easy A.
BEST BIO TEACHER EVER!!! if you are lost, go to her office hours! sooo helpful!! Mastering bio homework is easy. for tests, STUDY the study guide and MASTERING BIO and you will do fine. also understand what you are reading, but truly a "you get what you put into" kinda class. an A is incredibly achievable. she is so sweet and funny i love her.
Take BIO 105 with McAlvin to fulfill your global challenge requirement. She is hilarious in her lectures, but you have to come because there are clicker questions every class. If you study any of the Quizlet sets online for tests you can get an easy A on all the exams. Also if you take all three exams she drops your lowest.
Her lectures were clear and entertaining which is very rare. She showed true passion for the subject and even called certain microbes 'cute' in the middle of lectures. She is a gem at this university and, if I ever have to take another Bio course, I will be looking for her specifically.
I really enjoyed this course. If you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes this class is not terribly difficult. Dr. McAlvin gives study guides for exams and extra credit opportunities. Clicker questions every day.
Dr. McAlvin is one of the best professors I've had at UT. She is so caring and understandable towards her students and genuinely wants everybody to learn and pass the class! All of her tests are fair and she did a Learning Catalytics question about 80% of classes but other than that not much in class work. Take her she is AMAZING!!
I loved taking Dr. McAlvin. There are clicker questions every day so you should go to class. She gets rid of your lowest exam score if you take them all. It really is not hard to pass her class. And if you have any questions she will make sure you understand! I would 100% take her again. She is hilarious too! Makes biology more interesting.
Very easy and straightforward class, material is a little tough but she makes it easy to understand HIGHLY recommend.. barely EVER went and made a B+
Dr. McAlvin loves what she does, and her passion is contagious. The content is hard, so you do have to work for it. But with just a little effort, an A is easily achievable. Learning Catalytics - just like clicker questions every class just participation. Mastering biology homework is all on quizlet. BioLit is annoying, but easy.
Bio 160 is a pretty tough class in my opinion, and Dr. McAlvin's lectures were by far the greatest asset in learning the material. Dr. McAlvin really communicates a thorough understanding of the subject in an easily interpret-able manner. Mastering Biology is the only thing that sometimes makes this class harder than it needs to be.
McAlvin was awesome! She was passionate about Biology and it made it easier to be in the lecture. She does everything to try to help you out. She curves tests at the end, but study hard cause there are only two tests & the final! Very punctual when it came to receiving papers/staying on schedule. Only reason I made a C was bc I didnt study for test
Great professor! Gives a lot of extra credit and always does her best to be fair.
Dr. Mcalvin is a. very caring professor and she made this class very easy to sit through. She has a great attitude and is happy to be teaching.
Prof McAlvin is one of the best professors I've had at UT. Her lectures are easy to follow and she makes an effort to make them interesting. She's also an easy grader. As long as you make en effort to understand the material you will pass her class no problem!
You could tell she enjoyed her job and knew what she was talking about. The information itself is difficult but I feel as though she covered it well. She has a great sense of humor and is a genuine person. She gives extra credit and provides guides for her exams. The tests are not easy but she helps as much as possible. She wants you to succeed.
she is one of the few professors that is so incredibly passionate about her job. you can tell that she loved what she does and that translates into better teaching and better grades. i LOVE her and i would highly recommend her over other bio160 teachers
Dr. McAlvin is very real, approachable, and explains things well. I've really enjoyed her online teaching; she's very understanding and willing to work with students. One of my files was corrupted for an exam and she offered to give me credit if I sent it to her through email. Her exams are mostly taken from Mastering Bio. I hate BioLit, though.
Poor communication. Terrible online. Sweet lady but not very helpful.
She is extremely nice and will help you get the grade you want. I skipped almost all of the lectures and got an A, so just study and you'll be all good.
The sweetest and most understanding professor I have ever had. My class had a groupme chat and we all raved about how much we loved her daily (there was 200 of us). I will be honest, I never paid attention and I still got an A in this class. She is awesome.
The professor was not in class. the whole class was taught by a TA. Her TA was solid but the whole class felt like an intro to excel. This was a lab and after every lab, you had to do an excel table and graph, and PowerPoint. It got kind of repetitive.
this review is about biol159 not mcalvin since she wasnt present for classes. biol159 is taught by TAs. DONT take this class unless you absolutely have to. its 3 hours out of your week + lots more doing all of the work for it. due dates are often unclear, quizzes are posted an hour before theyre due, the lecture/work itself is confusing, etc.
The professor was never in class for biology 159 and is taught by the TAs. My TA was awesome and I loved her teaching style. The class itself is a little repetitive and consisted of a lot of group projects and papers but I honestly thought it wasn't bad as long as you put in the work. I would definitely recommend especially if you get Emily Smith.
Dr. McAlvin is the best professor I have had at UT. She is a teacher who likes to teach and not a researcher who has to teach. She is very funny and easy going. It is important to show up because she does do clicker questions. She also shows good videos that are very informative on the history of infectious diseases. Definitely would recommend!
Dr. McAlvin is a great professor and the class itself is not difficult as long as you read the textbook and complete the homework on time. She creates a good learning environment and is very open to answering questions during and outside of class. Attendance is not mandatory but she does do clicker questions during the lecture which she grades.
I did not have McAlvin although I have had encounters with her. TAs are sometimes helpful but not when it really matters. They can give you a bad grade just because they felt like it with no proper explanation. I would NOT recommend taking this class unless you absolutely have to.
Dr. McAlvin did not teach this class but her TA's are teaching this class. Some TA's are helpful but some of them are very rude and I got best Bio TA ever in UTK. This is the biology lab and once a week so better you did not miss any class. Attendance is very mandatory. This reviews are fake I got a best TA and Got A in the class.
Really good and engaging lectures. Homework and exams were pretty easy if you pay attention in class. Answers questions well whenever you need help
She will lecture the ENTIRE class, and sometimes even go over. She sometimes takes up to a week to respond to emails. The class is painfully boring, the lectures are hard to listen to. She does clickers and you will need to study to be successful. WAYYY too challenging for a Gen Ed.
Her lectures are important but kind of boring. Her tests are easy once you know her style, not a ton of homework. She makes classes online before breaks which is very kind.
She is a good teacher and a very nice person but her class is a little boring. But she prepares her students well and if you go to class, take good notes, and study them, you will do fine on her exams. Her lectures are mandatory since she does clicker questions but she moves her class to online like 25% of the time.
Dr. McAlvin is passionate about biology and wants her students to succeed. There are clicker questions for attendance, online questions over the chapter due before lecture, and multiple choice exams. Lectures are on the boring side, especially if you did well in high school biology.
Dr. McAlvin is so sweet, but her lectures are so boring. I found it difficult to pay attention. She's also a bit confusing, so I usually had to look things up. It's not terribly difficult, but I dreaded it.
I loved McAlvin. She does do clicker questions. As long as you obtain a certain amount of points at the end of the semester she gives you a 100 for it. Exams are pretty easy as long as you look over clicker questions and the powerpoint slides. The lecture can be boring, but overall she is great.
I love Dr.McAlvin for this class. It is a flipped class so you watched lectures outside the classroom. She offered test corrections for half credit and gave many extra credit options. I went to her office hours many times and she was extremely helpful. This isn't a very difficult class but it can be interesting and fun.
So nice and gives you a chance to fix your mistakes on exams.
Dr. McAlvin is truly the most compassionate professor. She always had our best interests in mind, even though this was an online summer class. I really appreciated how much time she put in to giving each student individualized feedback on homework and worksheets. She was definitely a great professor for a first time summer class.
I'm in her class as I type this out. She's an ok teacher, but omggg her lectures are so boringggg I'm literally falling asleep.
Dr. McAlvin is truly one of the sweetest professors I have ever met. You can tell she truly cares about her students and their success. I wouldn't say attendance is "mandatory", but she does do in-class participation questions that count towards your grade, so attendance is up to you. You'll do fine on the exams if you do all the assigned practice.
She is very nice and clear during lectures.
She is very nice and respectful to her students, but I do not think she is the best teacher if you need to understand the material. She is very good about making the class relatively easy to navigate and she gives very helpful practice exams.
Dr. McAlvin is a wonderful professor. Molecular bio has concepts that contain lots of depth, but she is very helpful in providing good explanations that help students understand the course material. She does a lot of visual learning activities that include drawing certain biological pathways, and this greatly helped me understand the material.
Class isn't mandatory but there are clickers every class so it weighs a lot into your grade. She is a great professor, and very accessible. She wants everyone to do well.
Dr. McAlvin is awesome, but her lectures can be boring at times. She grades harshly on in-class papers, but they aren't worth much of your grade. Her exams are fairly difficult, but studying well for them pays off. Overall, I would recommend.
I had heard amazing reviews of Professor McAlvin, so I was disappointed after taking her class. She is very friendly and cares about her students, but I found her lectures to be extremely unhelpful in learning the content. Her tests ask questions that are in extreme detail while she only teaches the most macro concepts in class.
I loved her, probably one of the best professors I've had so far. Wants you to succeed and will give you the resources and help! Take her if you can!!!
Dr. McAlvin was a decent professor for a non-major biology class. Her lectures were very straightforward and the exams were not difficult by any means if you paid attention in class. While I think she was a bit slow at times, I recognize that she took much care and time in thoroughly explaining all the concepts to ensure success in the class.
Professor McAlvin cares about her students. She teaches very well and like others mentioned, sometimes it can be a little dull. If you can pay attention, you will be able to grasp the concepts taught in class. Some exam questions are weird but she offered an easy 5 points of extra credit on each exam so if you study it is an easy A.
She is the best professor to take for biology! Her lectures are very similar to the tests and she is very accessible to reach if need be.
Dr McAlvin seemed to be all over the place and rambly in lecture, often going on long tangents about things in cell biology that aren't tested for. Also she made us get the book and do book homework but said tests will be based only off of lecture material. Super accessible to students and will answer your emails tho
not the best teacher but also not the worst. she expects you to come to class already studied the material, and is kind of disorganized. she is very nice though and will answer questions!!
Dr. McAlvin is absolutely incredible. She is so passionate about what she teaches and it makes her lectures very engaging. She is very thorough and goes into relevant detail about her lecture material.
Very sweet and intensely passionate about the material!! She will occasionally go on mini-tangents, but they don't interfere with the lecture at all. If you go to her office hours, she would love to help you learn and figure out something you're stuck on. She's a very visual teacher and is able to explain very complex processes in a simple manner.
She is great. All of her study guides are basically the same as her tests. I basically just studied those but I will be honest, I didn't learn much pass the first exam. She barely asks questions about things she went over in her lectures, so I just stopped paying attention. Very easy.
So so disappointing. It's like she makes no effort to help students better understand the course material. All she does is give us a book to read and some assignments to go along with it. Her provided videos are not helpful and her BioLit is so poorly set up. She seems nice and cool tho, maybe I'd have a better experience if I took her in person.
She is very passionate about the material, so she will sometimes go off on a tangent. Exams are easy and similar to the practice exams. Gives extra credit on exams for things that you missed. Really prepares you for what will be on exams. My class was flipped and watching the pre-lecture videos takes awhile. 100% recommend her to everyone!
Dr. Mcalvin is a very nice and caring professor however she is fairly disorganized and frequently cancels class.
talked slow and repeated herself often in notes but overall good and easy teacher
Professor McAlvin is passionate but her teaching style doesn't always click. Lectures can be disorganized, but she's accessible and wants you to succeed. unstuck AI made a helpful study companion alongside the textbook.
McAlvin is a pretty good lecturer. She talks a bit slowly but if you watch her prelecture videos on 1.5 speed, its a lot more manageable. She is very knowledgeable on the topics she teaches and her office hours are very helpful if you are confused. I'm lowkey sad I can't take her for Genetics, so I would recommend her.
Great professor, talks a little slow and explains some things repeatedly but makes Biology easy to understand. Tests are easy if you study and pay attention in class.
A good professor and a genuinely nice person. She makes the material easy to digest and moves at a good speed for someone not proficient in biology. Lectures can get a little dull but exams and assignments are simple and straightforward- take her for 101!!
She is the best. She talks very slowly and can be boring but it gives you plenty of time for taking notes and keeping up just fine with the lecture. She dumbs everything down and it is easier than a high school bio class. My friends had other bio 101 teachers and struggled, so take McAlvin. Clickers, almost no homework, tests all multiple choice.
Very easy class, but the labs are hard to get full points on after the first labs. Expect to get 15/20 on every lab after the first 5, but you can get extra credit to get some of that back. You never have to pay attention to any lecture, but there are clickers.
This class is an easy A. The exams are pretty easy, I studied very little and averaged an 89 on the exams. There is also an extra credit opportunity on each exam and test corrections after each exam that can allow for 50% of the points you missed back. If you need to take a natural science w/ a lab take this class it is very easy and informational.
She's the best. Every test was easy besides the final which was probably a 5/10 difficulty. But it's probably cause I stopped going to class the last month.
Dr. McAlvin is awesome. The tests were fairly easy, as she provided very helpful study materials. There is a lot of homework, but it is easy. McAlvin is so kind and considerate of her students. I highly recommend her for this course!
Caring and responsive! she knows what she's talking about. the exams are all in person, being 40+ questions with written extra credit + corrections for partial credit added. all that dropped my grade was the prelabs. study application of the topics, not definitions. do your work on time, show up to class, and you'll be fine. she's great!
I rated her as a 4 on difficulty on accident so im trying to fix that lol. id give her a 3 on difficulty
Dr. McAlvin is the single best biology professor at UT. Her class uses clickers but the clickers are exam questions. So pay attention to the clickers and take decent notes and you will pass. On each exam she does an "exam wrapper" to have the chance to earn back partial credit. She is very kind and caring, shes the cool aunt of the bio department.
I feel like I didn't learn anything in this class. Everyday for homework you had to read a chapter of the textbook and answer questions, but it was so excessive that it didn't actually help. Then in class she wouldn't even teach, she would just do random clicker questions. I did pretty good on the tests, but the final was way harder for no reason.
She is the embodiment of “those who can't do, teach” except she can't teach either, so do with that what you will.
She was great. Offered 50% corrections on exams, and they were not all that hard to begin with. I do not know if this class is offered anymore, but I took it last spring and I would recommend it.
Dr. McAlvin is super understanding and kind. She wants her students to succeed, so she provides a lot of extra credit and exam wrappers. At times, her PowerPoints lacked important information, but her exams were fairly easy. She will gladly write you a LOR as well.
She's great, had her twice, great experience both times.
Dr. McAlvin is one of if not the best biology professors I have ever taken. She is very nice and welcoming after class and in office hours. The exams can be pretty difficult, so you do need to take a lot of time studying, but she also offers extra credit for exam corrections. She is by far the best 240 professor you can take.
It was very lecture-heavy! Attendance is required, and clicker questions are part of your participation grade, but if you get one wrong, your participation grade goes down. Homework was weekly chapter readings, adaptive quizzes, and then real quizzes. Exams she allowed for corrections though!
She is super sweet and kind. One of my favorite personalities among the lecturers I have had. She offers a lot of corrections for exams and gives a lot of chances to raise your grade. I also think she is pretty funny and gives engaging lectures. I love her and highly recommend.
Dr. McAlvin is a very good lecturer. She does good at teaching the material, and you can tell she really knows and cares about what she teaches. She takes attendance every class and does worksheets randomly that count for participation, but it doesn't affect your grade that much. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. McAlvin is super awesome! I would say participation matters as she takes it through in-class clickers, however if you have a friend in class that can send you the code to the clickers, you can tune in at home and get the participation points. This class is pretty easy and I would definitely say she is the best professor for this course!
She is one of the nicest teachers I have had. She gives you clicker questions to study for the final and they are super close to the test.
I really enjoyed this class super sweet professor. The exam wrappers help, be careful on the final there isn't a safety net. Really valued her students
