Pipers class is not bad. It is however a lot of work. 4 main tests, review questions due for every chapter, and a portfolio. Does take attendance.
Dr. Piper is an upfront professor, no guessing at what is wanted and expected from graduate students. Read the syllabus - you get out of this class what you put in it! Those serious about learning the practical side of public health will love this class and work hard. Yes, it it's a lot of work, but so is making a decent living.
Interesting class. Read a little before class to make the discussions helpful. Provides lecture notes before class available online to be printed out. Have exams, individual and group projects, individual presentations and out of class portfolios which was interesting as it expands your public health knowledge.Overall learned a lot in class.
Lots of knowledge but doesn't know how to teach students. Class has a great deal of work which seems meaningless but she will change the syllabus to accommodate students so speak up if something isn't right. Quick to grade and tests are take home but her grading is inconsistent. Multiple times got counted off for things that were there. Stay aware
cant teach... at all. talks about how to get jobs rather than whats on tests... which could be helpful in four years when I am actually job searching but I'm not even in the public health program yet so who knows if im going to get a job in public health so. Goes through power points and reads them but doesnt TEACH. Pick a different teacher. please
Piper is a good teacher and is knowledgeable on the subject matter but her attitude isn't the best. When she's having a bad day you can definitely tell through her interactions with students. The course load is pretty heavy and she deducts points for "excessive cell phone use". She gives extra credit in the form of papers to gain points back.
Dr Piper is a great instructor. Show up to class, pay attention, take notes. Read the articles she posts and textbook and you will have a A! Very nice and helpful.
Of all my semesters at UNCC, she has proven herself to be the worst professor I've ever had. She misinterprets a lot of what you say. If you ask her questions she takes offense to it, even though you may need more clarification. She hated our cohort, and me especially. I made an A in the class, but she tried to stop that from happening 2 times.
Best public health teacher at uncc by far. Actually makes study guides for the exams which help out a lot.
Attendance is mandatory even though she reads straight off a powerpoint for 3 hours. If you miss more than 2 days your grade will drop by a letter grade. She was nice, but she really didn't offer anything "extra" to the class as she is only a "facilitator". Tests are open-ended, but she gives a study guide. Lots of reading. This class was a drag.
She really is passionate about public health and is willing to work with you if you are willing to put in effort into the class. She is a solid choice of a professor and cares a lot about her students.
Dr. Piper was such a good professor. She outlines everything in her syllabus at the beginning of the year, and as long as you just do your work, you will get an A. Anyone that says she is hard is honestly just lazy, she is extremely straight forward and laid back.
Fairly easily. I don't think I ever opened the book. Her tests have a bunch of extra credit questions. Do the study guide, pay attention, and do well on the labs and you will get an A. Dr. Piper is a nice, funny, and smart woman. She is here to help you succeed!
She assigns more work than physically possible. She's very vague and gets annoyed if you ask questions. She seems passionate about public health but shouldn't be a teacher.
I have thoroughly enjoyed taking 3105 with Dr. Piper. She has responded to all my emails very quickly, very willing to meet with students as needed, and the class is the most straightforward and easy to understand that I have taken at UNCC. Literally just follow the syllabus and you cannot get a bad grade.
Mrs. Piper is an excellent teacher. You can tell she is passionate about PH. My issue is with the TA. You will get points taken off that should not be and you will not be given a reason why those points were taken off. I had a 4.0 before this class in a tough major, nursing. I regret taking this class and having a public health minor. Switch minor.
I always heard good things about Dr. Piper she really cares about the needs of students and want us to be successful I look forward to taking her health disparities course next year I have always enjoyed Public Health but the passion she has for the topic gets me excited and I look forward to working in the field in the field. Awesome teacher!
Dr. Piper was one of the best Public Health professors Ive ever had. She took the time to explain real world situations to class full of young doe-eyed, privileged students who would never understand the environment or lives of people that we in Public Health aim to serve. We need more teachers like her.
Easy A IF you do the busy work that is assigned each week. She assigns too much work for one elective course. YOU have to come to class or she will fail you. Lots of class discussion and rambling
You have to really be passionate about this subject to pass the class. There are loads of assignments and she is very one sided. I did not enjoy her closed mindset, didnt make it easy to be open on my point of view on things. Lectures were boring and so were the videos she showed
The subject matter of this class is highly interesting. Her teaching style and overall demeanor to the class, however is borderline unprofessional. Class is basically held whenever she feels like it and she gives very short notice that class will be held. She has a very poor attitude and needs to learn how to address students respectfully.
Dr. Piper is a good professor who cares about the success of her students, but only when you also put the time in. She does not like to have her time wasted. You get whatever you put in to this class. If you study with her study guides, do the discussion posts, and read the textbook chapters, you will be just fine.
This professor should be a high school teacher. She does not teach well and is the WORST professor I have ever had. NEVER EVER TAKE HER!!!!
She takes herself way too seriously. I did not enjoy her class whatsoever.
I took her course online and let's just say everything was fine until the final group project. Her instructions were VERY unclear and it seemed that every time I emailed her to ask for clarification, my group and I were STILL confused. She did not explain this project well at all and it was frustrating.
Overall, her class is not that difficult. Participate and study and you will get an A. But her grading criteria is not fair and she is EXTREMELY vague about projects/papers/etc. She is not transparent and not the most professional when it comes to communication.
She is not at all what she thinks she is. Half of the assignment details are not in the assignment details, ONLY in the syllabus and she will fail you for the assignment if you don't notice. She will implement new rules for the course out of nowhere. However, weekly assignments and discussions are easy and basically busy work. Papers easy as well.
This professor was good. Get ready to read long lectures and to do discussion posts every single week. Pay close attention to the deadlines due for the discussion boards. Read carefully about the group project, she will not help you, she will directly ask you to read the syllabus. She gave out extra credit, so this will help you boost your grade up
Should be more clear.
the worst professor ive ever had. no empathy and is disrespectful to her students. some of the instructions to the assignments are super unlclear and instead of helping shes give smart mouth answers. pleaseee do not take!
Unprofessional and rude.
Class is well-structured but her teaching style is poor and she can be very unprofessional.
I felt like I did not even have a professor in this class. She had unclear instructions and made it more difficult when she doesnt respond back to emails.
Awful class do not take if her classes are not mandatory for your major
Dont take Crystal Piper for any HSMT course. She is extremely rude towards her students, doesnt respond to emails, and is absent when you need help or have questions. She also changed the set up of the course half way through the semester due to a group of poor students, ultimately punishing those who were not guilty. AVOID!!!
Everything was going good during the first part of the semester. With a month of class remaining, some students were caught sharing test answers and now all exams are conducted on google meet, which is fine. Now she is absolutely obsessed with calling out students for cheating, even if they werent cheating. She stresses everyone out, dont take her
Would not recommend. She is very rude and does not consider her students at all.
Very unprofessional and rude towards her students. We took exams while on Google meets instead of webcam, which is cool. However she calls students out for even glancing away from the screen for a second and is obsessed with calling students out for cheating even when they werent. or she just removes you from the exam with no proof. do not take!!!
Do not take her!!! Just finished her class and will never take her again. Unprofessional, rude, and inconsiderate of her students
The worst class I have taken to date. Dr. Piper is the queen of busy work which she takes decades to grade. Expect most of your assignments to be 100's because she clearly doesn't read them. However, occasionally she will deduct a ludacris amount of points for something futile. Don't expect an explanation or a reply. You're on your own. Avoid her.
I usually do not trust rate my professor, but this time LISTEN! Dr. Piper was extremely rude and unorganized. You are required to teach yourself straight from the textbook. She is not attainable outside of class. I am a straight-A student and had to WORK for this course (even though it is an introduction course). She made me want to drop the major.
Easy class but I do not recommend Dr. Piper. halfway through the course, my class got caught cheating and she still let the people who cheat resubmit assignments but the ones who didn't, couldn't. Was also very rude every time I tried to ask her questions. Lots of busy work and discussion posts.
Im not sure how this professor even gets a good rate in the past. Worst professor I have ever encountered. Rude and unprofessional. DO NOT TAKE!
Awful teacher
Avoid! Will not help you with material
Class is not difficult but the professor does not teach well. She failed to provide clear instructions on what she expects from her students. Unless you have experience with the major and know your stuff, you should be fine. Otherwise steer clear from taking her
Would not recommend
Good professor not too much work just weekly assignments. You have group projects which were annoying but not too hard. Easy A and easy assignments.
Professor Piper is honestly not bad at all. I think that she was going through a personal health matter throughout my semester which made her pretty unreachable, but she always seemed to answer eventually and figure everything out. She was kind and encouraging despite whatever was going on in her life and I think she just wants her students to pass
The class was easy overall. Her TA was absolutely rude. The TA was very condescending in her emails. I was afraid to even ask a question because the TA would answer my questions with questions and make me feel so dumb for even asking. Just do the work and pass the test and youll get an A no problem.
Dr. Piper will let you know any changes throughout the semester. Work on the assignments on time, you will pass the class. You will have two projects to do and for the interview someone from a healthcare workplace, please be legit with your interviewee and not just make someone up. She will call and verify.
Do not take her for an HSMT course. The courses I took with her for the HSMT major were fully online. This makes the classes completely self taught and honestly you don't learn a thing. She grades by few things: the discussion boards, 3 tests, and 2 projects. The guidelines for the projects are vague, but graded harshly. Save your time and money.
Professor does NOT respond to emails, very hard to get in contact with her. Professor relies on her TA to grade every assignment and even her TA's don't do anything. She waited until the last minute to grade almost every single assignment until the last day of class. Professor didn't release test code for final exam, we had wait until the next day.
The best way that I can think to articulate the way this course was taught is a rollercoaster of unnecessary anxiety. The discussion posts are lengthy but doable. However, the way the tests are presented, weighted, and graded is ridiculous. Please just avoid Dr. Piper at all costs. She is impossible to communicate with, and an absolute pain.
4tests, long discussion posts and summary papers. Grades slow and no feedback. Tests are okay if you study. They were multiple choice but our last one was written response because she said we were finding answers online. Still haven't received my grade for that and it was 3weeks ago. Also hasn't posted anything at all for our final exam soon
By far the worst professor at UNCC Cavas page was not posted first day of class despite assignments being posted. She does not grade work, is not knowledgeable about her own course, and is not clear about expectations and assignments. She rarely sends out announcements and when she does they are last minute and incredibly vague. Would not recommend
She isnt really clear on what she wants on some of the assignments. Shes also not very responsive. I honestly wouldnt recommend taking an online course with her as your professor. She may be different in person. Just be prepared!!!
I was not a fan of Dr. Piper. She takes weeks to get ahold of and is extremely paranoid about cheating. I took this class as an elective because I was genuinely interested in the course but I definitely regret it even though I was able to get an A. Take everyone's advice in these reviews of her and steer away from taking her.
Rude and unprofessional on emails, is rude when you ask questions. If you don't read the textbook you won't pass the class cause she doesn't teach anything in class. Horrible/short Powerpoint. Gives NO clear instructions on assignments and refers to syllabus for instruction, but it also sucks. STAY AWAY. Randomly cancels class for her vacations.
Awful. Professor Piper is not a good professor. Don't expect to hear from her much. There are 3 tests, a final exam, several discussion boards, and a few other assignments. The instructions for the assignments are poorly laid out and the exam material is not at all related to her "power points" which aren't much of anything.
SEVERAL STUDENTS HAVE EMAILED THE CHAIR BECAUSE THIS PROFESSOR IS EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL, DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS, AND LOUSY. THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. WE ARE SITTING IN THE FINAL EXAMS WEEK AND STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED GRADES SINCE BEGINNING OF MARCH. GOOD LUCK GETTING AN EMAIL FROM HER. SHE'S HORRIFIC!!
I don't understand why so many people have so many bad things to say about Dr. Piper. She does cancel a class a lot, but I always gave her the benefit of the doubt as she had a health problem the majority of the semester, lives 2 hours away, and has a child. I have taken 2 HSMT courses with her now and really don't mind her at all... Just take her
Not sure why there are many negative things about her, I've had her for 3 courses and think she is very caring. Just read your textbook and participate in class. All of her assignments for the whole semester are clearly laid out in the syllabus. She always made an effort to be involved with her class and guided us for our future careers.
Worst teacher ever she will change the format AND SUBJECT of exams without warning and expects you to not use class materials for tests. her assignments are dated and pointless- like write a 10 sentence summary of a 2 hour video. you will have to reach out to a stranger for your final project. just stay away!!!
its very a straightforward class. no extra credit & attendance was required. theres two group assignments, two exams.
The most UNPROFESSIONAL and INCONSIDERATE professor I have came across. If you're going to be a inconsiderate professor who absolutely doesn't care for their students, at least have your stuff together. Waited until after the deadline to put grades in, and no accountability. The good reviews on here are lies and are probably written by her.
This professor needs to pick a different profession, I'm very surprised she wasn't fired yet. The deans and head of the HSMT department had to basically help with grading assignments since this professor missed the grading deadline. Grades weren't put in until 2 days after the deadline leaving some assignments left ungraded.
Sad that this is the only professor that teaches this course at UNCC. She lack communication as well as empathy and consideration. No communication prior to tests and no communication on why grades were never put in before the deadline and after the deadline as well. She's paranoid of cheating, no extra credit, and just overall has been stressful.
Awful professor, words can not describe how stressful this professor was.
The Heads of the HSMT department and Deans received numerous of bad emails from her students about the unprofessionalism from this professor. It was so bad that other departments and professors had to put grades in for us. There was absolutely no communication from the professor during this whole ordeal.
This class was a very stressful class to take. The professor cancelled class 14 times this past semester and cared way too much about things that did not matter. She was paranoid about cheating and her notes are copied and pasted from the textbook. She is extremely lazy and is rude and unprofessional so do not bother emailing her.
Maybe if this Professor had better communication skills, took accountability for her actions, and had more empathy for her students then she would receive better reviews, better class survey rating outcomes, and maybe the class and other classes as well would of had more sympathy towards her, in this situation. You get what you put out, sorry.
I remember missing a test, a test in which an email reminder wasn't sent except the midnight of, due to internet connections. Well she was inconsiderate and rude and basically told me to go screw myself, got a zero. Says she told students to take the test during good internet connection. Like I can predict when my internet is going to go out.
One of those professors that you're scared to ask questions because of the rudeness, heard her TA'S were rude as well. Seems like she picks them based on her personality. Dear future students in this course and other courses as well, I hope you can see and ask your advisor if there is any different professor. Will definitely save you stress.
She does not keep up with her students. I had COVID and she allowed me to submit my assignments a few days late but she forgot and flunked my grade. I had to remind her to change it. She couldn't even recall that we had talked about it. Her lecture does not make sense. Just awful. If you can, please don't take her as a professor.
Please do not take this professor, I don't care if the other class is on the moon surrounded by a ring of fire and meets in the middle of the night, you would have a better experience in that class than in this one. The course material is not the issue, I did very well in this class, but Dr. Piper, has absolutely no empathy or accountability
You can have all of the degrees, certifications, and achievements in the world, but they do not mean anything at all, if you are not kind and do not remain humble.
Had her for spring she is a great professor. Class work is easy if you read and do the assignments. One thing I wish she would change is to provide clear instructions on what she expects they can be confusing at times.
Dr. Piper- Smith re-geared her class. I was hesitant because of the reviews but I had a great experience. There is a weekly quiz and activity but an open book and notes. If you do the work you will receive a good grade. There are unclear instructions but if you read between the lines and do the best you can you will make an A.
Dr. Piper Smith doesn't care about her students, she takes months to grade assignments that are worth lots of points. She graded months of work in the last week of classes and it affected final grades and there was no time to ask for extra credit. Good luck reading her instructions on assignments, they are poorly written and extremely confusing.
She was so caring and understanding when I had to take time off during an emergency. She helped me with everything, class was 100% virtual, highly recommend.
after ONE class this semester with dr piper i actually considered changing my major and entire life plan of being in the healthcare field because she was incredibly difficult to put up with. she grades too harshly and does not care about your personal life, when i went through medical issues she was rude and did not treat the situation with respect
HER FINAL ESSAY WILL MAKE YOUR FINALS WAY MORE STRESSFUL THAN IT ALREADY IS DO NOT TAKE HER !! she has a weird rule only the first three rows can only use their personal electronics so it's literally game of thrones for the first three rows
All the assignements were open the 1st day of class, so you could work a head. you must read ever chapter and be ready to engage with her lectures. There is a lot of homework, but she gives you lectures days off to work on them. Some people think she is tough but she is not just do the work she is asking. She is my favorite professor so far.
The worst professor I've had at UNCC so far. This is my second class with her, and both were awful. Her course setup is incredibly confusing, and the syllabus is poorly written and formatted, requiring constant reference. You won't learn a thing and will end up teaching yourself (with no material to help). This class was a waste of time and money.
Overall class was mainly discussion posts were required you to write ten sentences and a citation and respond to a peer. There were three final papers/project. Her syllabus was very confusing and none of the papers had a rubric. Horrible at responding to emails too.Very condescending professor. Do not recommend.
She is extremely rude in her emails. She was reported several times to the HSMT director for her grading and behavior. 0/10 recommend. Had several issues with her during this semester about assignments. Worry about whether the class will be canceled. Yeah, she gonna cancel every chance she gets because she prioritizes her family over everything!
Very difficult and condescending in emails. accused most of the class of plagiarism and then made us redo plagiarism checks to fix our grades. The syllabus was not helpful at all and had the final essay due at 8 am when all other assignments were due at 11:59 without any reminders or telling us beforehand the turn-in time changed.
Dr. Piper-Smith is tough but very clear in the syllabus and instructions what she wants. Most people who have rated her low didn't follow her instructions. Can sometimes take a while with emails and is sometimes super quick. If you read the instructions and do the work it's not hard
This professor was not only hard to access but was passive aggressive in her responses. She did not give you time over breaks and would continue to assign work over holidays. Additionally she accused almost her entire class's worth of plagiarism and sent a threatening email when students tried to take action against it.
She has her TA's do all the work. Grading and rubrics are loose and up for interpretation I guess. Pretty unresponsive, missed a meeting with me this semester and followed up the next day in a rude manner, lol. This class can be an easy A if you just do your work and carefully go over your assignments to ensure your grade isn't butchered.
vague instructions, no feedback, does not respond to any emails at all. do not take her.
