He rocks. Best prof. had at Penn State to date
Very nice, and likes to make things easy
No Comments
Awesome guy! Best prof I've had so far
SOOO much fun! u need to take his class
This guy is by far the best prof in state college. He is constantly cracking jokes and hands out extra credit often for just coming to class. There were only 4 tests in the class and they were very fair if you studied the notes from class.
GREAT teacher...so nice and funny...loved this class..tests were easy and he graded papers fairly
cool guy
awesome awesome awesome. i love going to his classes. he relates to the students. the best prof i have so far. i think he is cute
he rocks!! funniest guy ever, and the class is very easy as long as you go to class and take notes. only 4 tests, no final. GREAT class!
SO FUNNY! Take a class with this guy, you'll LOVE IT!
BEST CLASS YOU WILL EVER TAKE. HES FUNNY, NICE, AND HES A BALD CUTIE! THIS IS HOW EVERY PROFESSOR SHOULD BE! I LOVE YOU KURT!
AMAZING...so easy and he is sooo awesome
GREATEST CLASS! he's an awesome professor. he is hilarious and relates to the students in a great way. TAKE ANY CLASS OF HIS BEFORE HE LEAVES!
sobolewski is the god of teaching at psu...i had him for soc 003 and soc 012 and got A's in both. He is a legend.
Awesome dude. Take one of his classes before he leaves.
Freakin' hilarious... Funniest guy ever and makes the class a breeze
GREAT CLASS! He's very funny and tells great stories!!! He makes the 9am class well worth it!!
BEST PROF I'VE HAD AT PSU. THIS IS MY 4th CLASS WITH HIM AND IF I COULD TAKE 20 MORE I WOULD.
SOOOO AWESOME!!! BEST teacher i have ever had in my entire life! Only class i've ever enjoyed going to because he is soooo freakin FUNNY and Cool!! LOVE HIM to DEATH!!! DEF the best professor at PSU even beats DR Clemente by a long shot and hes awesome too
The best teacher you could every have. His classes are an absolute blast and is nothing like the rest of the faculty who can't teach. He will be missed at PSU and anyone would be lucky to have him teach at their university. His the best teacher with a great sense of humor.
The man, absolutely the man
The best teacher ever. The Sociology department lost one the greatest teachers I'd ever had. Each day of class I looked forward to and I learned more in his classes than I learned in my other classes combined. He is the best.
Hot and awesome! You will want to come to every class because he is hilarious & cute too ;). I was so upset b/c I missed a class b/c I overslept. I never met anyone who had him & did not love his class. Wish I could take another. You can not go wrong with this professor. The class will make your day. You will leave smiling from funny stories
he was very easy fall quarter, but then decided overnight to be extremely hard winter quarter. i dont know what happened. the class was supposed to be an easy A like it was in the fall, but in the winter i ended up with a B-....he also requires a LOT of readings. but gives a good amount of extra credit
He saved my fall term! I had the worst teacher at the beginning of the term and the last day for adding classes, i came to his Theories in Crime class as my last resort and IM SO GLAD I DID! Hes hilarious, talks a bit fast but if you pay attention you'll get it. He connects every idea with a current example so you get it. TAKE HIM!
I took Theories with him in the fall and he was very entertaining and funny. You have to memorize a lot from Powerpoints or the textbook for the quizzes. So it's strictly lectures, no in-class work, hw, or discussions. Take him!
great teacher
You can't ask anymore in terms of an easy A, especially this being an upper division cluster course. Thirteen open book quizzes on D2L and a take-home midterm and take-home final. A third of class time during the term is spent watching documentaries that are very engaging. If you need an upper division cluster, take this class; you'll get an A.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he has questions on the quizzes about the content, so miss at your own risk. Quizzes are online and there is also a 3 page paper to turn in. Excellent choice in documentaries. I'm glad to say I learned a lot in this class. Excellent teacher.
Hilarious professor. The powerpoints come directly from the book but he puts a lot of person stories or jokes in. The documentaries he chooses are very interesting. Sometimes he will notice everyone is bored and will end class early (nice touch). Definitely take him!
FAVORITE professor in 4 years. I am going to take every class of his. He jokes and makes class SO fun! He also shows documentaries which are interesting and a break from lectures. TAKE THIS CLASS!
He basically shows a documentary for every chapter. His powerpoint presentations are very boring and he knows it as he tells us everyday. all his homework is assigned to d2l and is open until last day of class. He assigned 2 exams which are take essay questions. pretty chill dude. would reccommend if you don't like going to class all the time.
He is a great professor, I've taken 3 classes with him. He's funny and easy going. He is willing to answer any questions you have and there are no tests just 3 essays and 4 quizzes on D2L. Highly recommend any of his classes.
honestly the best professor. refreshing and hilarious, sounds a bit like Seth Rogen. took summer course, 4 online quizzes (not too hard if you did the readings) and one 5 page paper. interesting course subject, perspectives on terrorism and learned a ton. cant wait to take more of his classes!!
I love this professor. He answers quickly any questions you have, is very interesting, makes me want to go to every class, makes other profs look bad. I highly recommend any and all his classes. I wish he taught more mandatories. As long as you do the work assigned and read the assigned, you will do well.
It's classified as a hybrid, but it's basically all online since attendance isnt mandatory and every quiz, midterm, and final are online andor turned in online.I went to the first 2 classes. The documentaries were cool but his lectures were boring as hell. I'd rather use that time to read thru and look at the book while i took the quizes online.E-Z A
Keeps class fun and light, never really lets anything get too boring.
Curt is an very amusing teacher. He is engaging at all times and keeps things interesting. He has a great sense of humor, enjoys his job, and has enthusiasm about the material. His class lectures are well structured and thoughtful. Curt is able to explain things from multiple points of views which is essential when teaching of terrorism. (Fall EB)
Love, love, love! Best teacher! Curt is so funny and super knowledgeable. He even finds ways to keep CCJ 410: Sex Crimes light and humorous every single class. Documentaries mix things up and make learning fun and effortless. Curt is super understanding if you have problems with anything. I hope to take more classes with him, he is wonderful!
Curt is so funny, and genuinely intelligent that were he not twenty years my senior, I would seriously make him a proposal of marriage. Actually, this class (and he) was so awesome that I'd frankly still do it anyways. And all of this commentary on a criminological theory class, is coming from an art major--so without hesitation, take the class!
Awesome prof! Great stories and funny. Great slides, posts on D2L too. Eye opening documentaries. He almosts makes me want to switch majors. Midterm and final online. Awesome class
Mr. Sobolewski has been a wonderful teacher and I highly recommend taking him for any class. He has great perspectives on the world as well as amusing anecdotes and stories to keep things interesting. He does not ask a lot of questions towards the class which helps things stay on track. His overall demeanor is about as amusing as you will find.
Curt is FANTASTIC! Probably the most hilarious teacher I have or will ever have. His excitement makes me excited to be learning about one of the more boring subjects in CCJ. I have a new found love for theories due to his ability to make it interesting. HIGHLY RECOMMEND and will take his classes any chance I get.
Class consists of 4 online quizzes based off the films seen in class and off the textbook. He's hilarious and makes the class very enjoyable. Final was also online, overall a good, straight-forward class!!
This was my first criminal justice class that I took as an elective and Dr. S did not disappoint. Everything above is true but I found his quizzes to be difficult. Instead of testing us on main themes, I found the questions to be a little trivial.
AWESOME Professor! Super funny humor and the class is super easy, all he cares is that you did the work.
Oh man. Curt was great. Very easy going and hilarious. I really enjoyed this class, and ended up being more interest in the material than initially expected. Lots of documentaries.
This is my second class with Dr. Sobolewski and if PSU stood for Portland Sobolewski University then I would have enjoyed my education better. The class isn't easy but it makes you think and the professor makes you laugh even in a class on terrorism. If you can take a class with him, do it! If you don't, then I feel sorry for you.
This was truly one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. He is pretty entertaining, so I think it has more to do with the class. He isn't a tough grader but he is unclear at times. Particularly when writing essays. I skipped a lot of class and received a B.
He should do standup, if you can make people laugh about terrorism you're pretty funny. Well laid out lectures and notes, watched some great documentaries. I only wish he had been more challenging, quizes are on D2L and obviously open note, papers were easy. Could get away with not going to class but he was entertaining enough to make me want to.
Curt is a great teacher, easy to talk to, clear on his assignments and and makes his long lectures entertaining to the point where you want to pay attention. I've had many classes with him and always look forward to my next class he is willing to teach.
I went to about 320 classes. I got an A-. Oddly enough, during those 3 classes I actually went to, I learned more than any CCJ class I'd ever taken in the past. Curt made me subconsciously feel bad for missing it because he's such a fascinating, hilarious guy. He deserves some props. But then again, with attendance not being mandatory... meh..
I've had Curt in the past, he uses the class time to lecture, or show documentaries where you have to write a response to if you attended the class. Quizzes are online and basically open book. I didn't have too hard of a time maintaining an A in the class.
While Prof. Sobolewski is a nice guy, I found his class to be extremely boring. His lectures and quizzes were copied directly from the textbook. No point of showing up. It was an easy A, but didn't teach me anything new. Take this class if you enjoyed high school health classes. Otherwise, your tuition dollars would be better spent elsewhere...
He looks, talks, and dresses exactly like Seth Rogen. The material is dense, but the way he gets the class through it is always fun. He's super funny! There are about four online quizzes, and five in class papers (super easy), and then a final paper.
Took his CCJ 260 class as an elective and absolutely loved it! He is very clear when he teaches and is super funny. He made class something to look forward too. If you have the option to take a class with him definitely do it!
Crime Control Strategies could be a long, depressing and drawn out course as we all SHOULD know that there aren't really any crime control strategies that work, or else we wouldn't be in the Criminal Justice field. That said, I wouldn't recommend this course with ANY other Professor! Curt tries is hardest to breathe some life into this topic.
He was an enjoyable teacher but I would not take another one of his courses again. His class was fun, but his power points were not clear and his quizzes were pretty tough. The textbook was this long novel about Nazism which was a chore to read and most students didn't read it. Glad I took the class, but would choose another professor if possible
Despite it being a laid back course it was the most difficult class I've taken. The quizzes ask questions that are random and stupid. Lectures were not helpful at all and be prepared to read about 300 pages a week to pass this class. Poorly structured. What you were graded on was unclear and I didn't learn a thing. I wish I hadn't taken this class.
I'm not sure if the previous student who reviewed this course actually came to class. 300 pages reading a week? Maybe they were in a different class. There was a book we had to read throughout the term, but not 300 pages a week. The class was amazing. Lectures were interesting and the teacher has a great passion. Come to class and enjoy.
This was an eye opening course. We read a book on Nazi's Germany and that blew my mind. Dr. S is passionate about teaching and I just wish more students were paying attention or coming to class because they missed an amazing class with a professor that teaches with humor and tries to make us think instead of just memorize.
Curt is an enthusiastic and funny professor. He tried to make the class more interesting by telling stories and jokes, which helped (since a theories class can be kind of dry). Grade is based on a midterm, final, and several short response papers (very easy as long as you watch the documentaries). Read the book because test questions come from it.
if you want an easy class that requires no thought or effort, than this class will satisfy you. curt is a cool guy with a good sense of humor who makes it really for easy for everyone to pass. Just keep in mind, he's a regressive leftist to the extreme, so take everything he says with a grain of salt. You will be lied to and misled.
Doc S. was great. Very funny. Very learned. Very HOT!
Dr. S makes you think. No, he forces you to think. We live in a society where people just don't want to be challenged and he did that to me. Students may not like their beliefs to be challenged but Dr. S does it without forcing an agenda upon you and encourages you to dig deeper into so many important topics. Best teacher ever.
The best ever. Never laughed or learned so much in a class.
He is such a funny instructor and I actually learn things in this class unlike other classes where the instructors don't care about teaching you, only about making sure they teach you the material they have to teach you. Easy A. Class is not mandatory, but it is interesting to hear his lectures and I have learned so much. Great instructor!
This class changed my life. It was challenging but Dr. S presented the information in lectures in a clear manner that made you think (if you weren't just looking at your laptop mindlessly). It changed my outlook on life and he is easy accessible outside of class. Also he made terrorism funny at times which I thought would be impossible to do.
Fun scattered lecture from (posted) slides; 6 online "discussions", put in the word count & never hear about them again; good book, worth the read; 3-4 documentaries/test, view in/out of class - Pay attention & take notes! Mid/Final had study guides, 3hr ea. & online so can use notes, make groups etc. Final felt written by random/drunk grad sdnts.
This course changed my life. It's just that simple. I don't see the world around me the same because of this course. Thank you Dr. S.
Curt is an amazing professor! Tells tons of good jokes and has an obvious love for what he's teaching. Is an easy grader if you do the work he assigns, as in if you do it and do as much of it as he wants you will get 100%. I have slept through a couple of classes and he posts all the lectures on d2l making it easy to make up for anything you miss!
Dr S is one of the few professors I've taken where you can tell he loves his job. He lectures with passion and is an inspiration. This is a class I will remember most of my life. Just amazing.
I've stayed away from taking CCJ courses because I never liked the instructors but this one changed my mind. Passionate about teaching and puts in a lot of time with the lectures (a lot of clips) and is very knowledgeable about popular culture and crime. He truly made me think and want to come to class (though I don't know why students skip).
Mr. S is dry and candid. He is chatty, cracks jokes, and shares stories about his life growing up in South Chicago. He mostly uses docs to explore class concepts in real life settings. Doesn't care much about attendance. Weekly discussions, two tests are online. If you listen during lectures (slides aren't very detailed) you won't need the book.
To be honest I liked him at first, he makes a boring lecture class funny. However the two tests are SO hard, and go back on videos and tiny details from documentaries months ago! I got very frustrated because I was doing well but there was not a way to prove that I understood everything.
Really funny, clearly knowledgeable. This was an accelerated 4-week summer hybrid course. Lots of writing, but he wasn't a tough grader. Basically, if do the assignments you get the 'A'. The textbook was a big help on my quizzes, so, considering the text was an easy, interesting read, I recommend just doing it. He was a fun prof & I learned a lot.
When I registered for CCJ 330U I thought it would be boring but it was the opposite. The instructor actually made the class interesting with his teaching style. He is funny and real. There are some short essays, but he wants to hear your thoughts and opinions on matters.
Really funny guy who knows his stuff. Be ready to watch lots of documentaries. The tests were unexpectedly difficult but he's a fair grader. Highly recommend.
He is a really chill teacher. If you do your work and follow the criteria you should do fine. There are only a few assignments, in my class, we did 2 discussion posts, 2 short papers, and the final. The only way you should fail this class is if you blow everything off. All the slides are posted online, which is extremely helpful.
Best professor I've had at PSU yet.
Curt engages students by making lecture fun. He provides information on exactly what he is looking for in homework. Two tests, four discussions with responses, and two essays. Watched several videos and documentaries which are nice because its a change of pace in material, plus you get personal stories about what we are learning. Great Professor!
Shows a lot of good documentaries. The class was a breeze, online tests that you can work on for days at a time with no time limit. Makes learning theories easy breezy. I love theories. Sometimes he uses too much sarcasm though which makes me get distracted. He is really funny, just gets off track a bit. I would take his class again and am nxt term
Basically the whole class in online/out of class activities, but you go to class to know what those activities need to be. Super chill, easy to listen to (cant go down the rabbithole a bit) but overall you are intrigued enough to listen through. You basically watch movies and then do a write up about it. You can get away with no testbook too.
I took both Theories of Crime and Criminal Justice in Pop Culture with Dr. Sobolweski. He is a good teacher. his lectures are informational and funny. He does go on tangents a lot so if that bothers you you might not like him, but his tangents are interesting. He doesn't give much homework.
He spends more time talking about his personal life than actually teaching which is what I pay for (wasting my time). I also missed a portion of the assignment (my fault). However, when I asked for extra credit he straight up said no (understandable). BUT he let another student get out of the final to see a family member. DONT RECOMMEND!!!
Coming to class was a true relaxation and the teacher is sooo funny and knowledgeable. This is an great cluster course to take if you are weighed down with other classes. There are 3 discussion posts and 2 online quizzes (tricky-ish) but you can get an A if you check with slides, book and videos. EC given if multiple people ask ;) Great class!
Quite knowledgeable and entertaining. The material can be bleak, so expect some levity that involves corny jokes and sarcasm. While there's not a lot of work but make sure you read the directions in the syllabus thoroughly since bombing one assignment can kind of hurt you.
Dr. S is a very charming individual who is very intelligent and makes it easy to learn the material without making things unnecessarily gaudy. He wrote his own book for terrorism which usually sucks but the book is actually great and really easy to understand and cheaper than other books. Tests can be tricky and detail orientated but awesome!
I learned nothing in this course, all that is required of you is to watch documentaries and write short responses to them and three long quizzes throughout the term. Quiz questions are random be prepared to remember minor details from readings. Prof. is rude when you ask for help with anything.
Super easy class, taken online due to Covid-19. The term consisted of reading through 12 chapters followed by lecture slides. Sometimes a documentary to watch. Total of 3 discussions. Midterm and final are open book tests. Clear grading instructions, I never needed to email the professor. I highly recommended it!
Dr. Sobolewski is perhaps one of the best at teaching online. The class is not burdensome at all, but you won't learn anything if you don't read the assigned material or watch the documentaries. Lecture slides are very easy to follow. 10/10 will be taking a class with him again.
He was an amazing teacher.
Probably the easiest class I have taken in college. Literally just read the book and take a quiz after that is directly about that chapter you just read. Should be an easy A. Curt is also good at keep students in the loop and updating things when needed. Super easy, 10/10 would recommend.
10/10 would highly recommend! Class is comprised of 3 exams, 5 mini essays based on assigned documentaries (which are really interesting imo!)
Dr. S. is entertaining as a lecturer, and this is a perfectly fine cluster course to take. If you're a CCJ major, you may want someone who is going to challenge you a little more. Nevertheless, an easy class once in a while can be a nice change of pace (or a good pairing if your schedule has a really hard class).
This professor is awesome. I took his Theories Crime and Justice course, and I learned a lot. It's very lecture heavy and he goes through his slides very quickly, but he posts the slides on canvas and the lecture's are extremely entertaining. He's very funny, great at making crime interesting, and especially charismatic. Take his class!
We have 4 discussions in the first 4 weeks, then it is just lectures. Aside from that, we have a chapter to read per week and the quizzes are all due at the end of the term. He is flexible but read the syllabus well because extensions are not made. He is fun with his lectures, they are fun and feel flowy, easy to understand. Would take again.
class material was a little boring, but professor is a funny teacher and the class was an easy A (in my opinion), he made it fun.
Dr S. He is awesome of teaching Sociology. I recommend taking his class Easy A.
No big tests or final exams, just small quizzes that count for over half your grade (DO THE READINGS!!!!!) Super funny guy, lecture heavy but I looked forward to his jokes and weird tangents. Lots of reading but if you take some notes (I suggest using a word search program) it's an easy A class. Doesn't really answer emails, talk to him in class.
I absolutely LOVE Prof S his classes are easy to pass if you read the material, watch the movies, and take the notes. I've taken 3 of his classes already and he never fails to make me laugh or think hard about certain subjects. Best part was class is not mandatory so you can take the notes at home and still pass the class scot-free. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very easy course, less than 10 hours of writing and a few documentaries. Dr. Sobolewski is very nice and knowledgeable, I wish I could've taken this in person
Dr. Sobolewski is an excellent professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He is very knowledgeable and loves his job. He has a great sense of humor and always makes class entertaining and fun. The class I had him for does not require a lot of work.
Best prof I've had at PSU and also one of the easiest classes. No busy work!!! Just lectures but he posts the slides, three discussions and three exams. Super funny in lectures and is very helpful if you need assistance. Also very transparent and organized. Could not recommend more!
Although there are readings each week, there are few discussions and quizzes. I've had 4 courses with him and this one is the easiest but the material is very interesting. 10/10 would recommend, easy A.
Probably the best professor I've had. I've taken 3-4 classes with Curt so far and if I could, I'd take infinitely more. He's funny, caring, and makes classes easy and digestible. His classes are amazing to take alongside harder ones, and he is so flexible with due dates. You will never regret a class with Curt he is by far the best. Love this dude.
Professor Sobolewski has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. Take 330U if you want an easy A. Even with my very lacking attendance I still did well on all the assignments. 3 discussion posts and 3 online exams due for the term, no final, and no attendance taken. Thank you king Curt we love you
Dr. S is an engaging lecturer who makes the material fun. While the course is not overly challenging, staying on top of the readings, videos, and assignments is key to doing well. unstuck study is a great tool to boost your study prep.
Literally the only online course I've liked
A very solid professor! Not strict at all. Very understanding of personal situations that students may encounter. Only graded on a few papers, a midterm and final.
This guy is a chiller. Talks and Talks, but does his job well. Lots of lectures. The class it just pure quality. Attendance isn't required. Take this class if you have the option because Curt is a superb professor and an even better person.
One of the best classes at PSU. Amazing instructor engagement with each student. Super manageable workload. Clear grades and communication. Fast email response. Cannot say enough good things, take this class!! Discussion every other week, midterm, and final. No huge assignments, just exploration and good discussion conversations
The textbook and powerpoints were AI-generated. 60-100% of the text as written by Ai. The professor claims it as his own, normalizes plagiarism. Students posted their discussion posts with AI. Teacher taught from AI. No one learned anything. Infuriating, despair-filled, dystopian experience. Easy A because you literally do nothing.
Professor outlines the class really well in the syllabus. I took this over summer term, so condensed and online. 1 paper/week based on CCJ topics, ~26 and you have to choose 10. All papers require critical thinking, but are ~1 page opinion/analysis responses. 1 midterm/1 final test, that you're able to take 2x - easy if you follow PPT lectures.
Curt is hilarious, lectures are very engaging. Definitely a talker, but very entertaining. Communication is very clear, grading is transparent, and he responds to emails faster than any professor I've had in the past 4 years. This man is genuinely so funny, and he is very supportive. Gives king energy and good vibes in class. 10/10 would take again
Really cool professor, love that he's able to crack jokes through the lectures rather than just being monotone. Weekly writing assignments, not too bad, about articles or documentaries he provides. 2 online exams with multiple chances.
