Very rude, don't even bother asking him for help! He'll eventually help you but not until after he's told you how stupid you are!
Spanky and Cranky send greetings.
Very difficult instructor. Poor handwriting makes reading on the board difficult. Does not take an interest in the success of his students. Exams always include more in depth material than on homeworks.
he loves his honors students, but still doesn't help much unless you go to help sessions almost every day
Not helpful at all
Dr. Clemons seems to have trouble at times explaining more difficult concepts, along with making mistakes on the board. He covers basic modeling techniques and examples, not many new ideas are introduced. You need to take your share of learning here. He is passionate though, which is contagious.
Likes to do examples that surprise, are pertinent to the test. But also forces students to think and apply techniques learned. Not for the weak willed.
Great teacher. Do not understand what other people are talking about. I have been working with him for many years now and he has always been helpful. He answers questions that I have in other classes as well. Very intelligent and teaches more than just the book(College is about learning)
I am a good student, I worked hard and the guy was a total jerk to me. He picks favorties and good for you if you're one of them, run away if you're not. Also, he makes up far fetched stories all the time, wastes class time with them and then complains when we are behind in lecture material.
Dr. Clemons is like sling blade with a phd in mathematics.
too many random stories! not enough explaining.
Great guy, never had a teacher more willing to help his students.
great teacher, if you ask for help he will give it to you no questions asked, but if you don't ask he won't help. If you keep up on your work and study the material class is a breeze
I thought he was a great teacher. Had him over the summer for calc 3 and he was always personable and understood summers shouldn't be spent doing calc. I never did any homework but if you pay attention in class you should be fine.
Had for Calc I,II and Diff EQ and man when i went to Calc III w/o him i realized how valuable of a teacher he was, extrememly devoted to his work, and is always there to help, fast paced and challenging, but somehow he manages to infuse the info into our mind... also has lots of great stories
Very helpful and fun. The class is tough but Clemons is always there to help.
second time taking class, clemons makes it much easier.
Dr. Clemons is a very good teacher and fair grader. His expectations are high but his tests are unnecessarily hard. They are much harder than quiz problems and there were no assigned homework problems to prepare students for the difficulty of his tests. He can also take a condescending tone towards students when they ask for clarification in class.
Awesome teacher, the best teacher i have ever had at Akron.
Fun Class, Great teacher
Very devoted, helps students in any way possible. Hard tests though. Great teacher overall
Thinks you are smart as him and have PHD so fly through material. Fixed grading. Nice Guy.
Fantastic teacher. Also, he once came to my house and saved my cat by getting it out of a tree. He is truly the last American hero.
Awesome, energetic and keeps you motivated. Do the work and you will be fine. He also likes to give you the test questions if you pay attention in class...
Moves quickly through material and assumes that students can keep up. If you miss a class, it is difficult to catch up. As long as you go to class, do the homework, and read the book, the class is not too difficult. Awesome stories during class that keep the class interesting and entertaining. Very knowledgeable professor who is worth taking again!
He's enthusiastic, accommodating, fair, and pretty much a genius. I'm not a great math student, but I enjoyed his class and learned a lot from him. He's an extremely fair grader, fantastic with partial credit. You will learn a lot from him.
I had him for Calc III and ODE. He's a great professor. He cares about the students learning. He's very fair and gives students every chance to do well. Highly recommend.
Assumes students can keep up with material. Doesn't explain how to use theorems, but proves them. Very necessary to keep up with the textbook readings, which are more helpful. Will do lots of homework problems in class. Homework is not mandatory.
I don`t really like this guy.Maybe because the FOAM is a boring class.
Don't take the Honors section unless you took Calc BC in high school. He moves very fast, doesn't seem to like clarifying for students who don't understand, and doesn't curve AT ALL. I got a 5 on the Calc AB test last year, but this year I'm struggling, partly because of his teaching methods. It's doable, but you have to devote A LOT of time to hw.
Professor is generally nice to students and will make jokes and crazy stories in class. Test content is rarely based on in-class or homework (not mandatory. He is not very good at teaching the material on the syllabus and will regularly base all concepts on how they apply to engineers. He is an extremely nice person, just not a good teacher.
Know his stuff, but tests are very, very hard. Have to do homework on a daily basis and must have questions to ask or he will assume you know what you're doing. Fair grading scale and quizzes every week that can help boost grade. Have to do well on exams to do well in class. Loves his students though
Had him for Linear Algebra in the summer. I don't know how you could not get a good grade in the class he teaches everything straight forward and gives you identical problems in preparation for the exams. Would recommend him to anyone.
Very intelligent instructor, but does not convey ideas clearly enough to be understood well during homework and exams. Likes to put questions on exams that have sometimes never been seen in class (or seen very rarely). Loves his students and is very easy to talk to about anything. Exams are very hard!
Avoid at all costs! Class averages for Calc 3 were between 50-60 percent. Doesn't help and expects you to literally know the whole book. One of the worst teachers to take for math in general. He doesn't even care about the students and their grades.
Horrible teacher who is okay with letting whole class of student fail.
Does not convey ideas well at all. Class is confusing and frequently makes mistakes. Tests are based on material not presented in class or homework. Avoid.
This teacher has good intentions, however he is the most disorganized teacher I have had. He will make you hate calculus. If you really pay attention really hard, it is plausible that you can do well, but it's hard to pay attention to his rambling statements that he states during class. All around, hes a really nice guy, take at your own discretion
don't take him if you're not an honors student. Everything that he is teaching the honor calc 3 student, he is teaching for the regular calc 3 class and you're only getting credit for the regular. he goes through the material fast and makes mistakes on his own problems. nice guy, but he doesn't seem to care that most of the class is failing
Dr. Clemons is a very passionate professor that likes to see his students do well. His notes reflect hw, quizzes, and exams but the exams are much more difficult than hw and quizzes. Be prepared to understand how to graph as its essential to pass his course.
Clemons is a great teacher. He is passionate about teaching and will help you any time you need it, even if that means going to his house and sitting at his dinner table. Tests directly reflect HW and quizzes. DO THE RECOMMENDED BOOKWORK. Just be prepared for at least an hour of HW a night. This class will prepare you for higher math.
Awesome professor if you are willing to put in the time. He will always find ways to help you and get you back on track. He tells exactly what are on his quizzes and exams. He rushes through lecture so he can do problems where you actually figure out how to do the problems. Notes are frustrating, but you understand them when he does problems.
His tests are very difficult and often involve using several methods to complete the problems. He is very helpful, however. Anytime he is not teaching a class, he will help you, even if you interrupt his research. He prepares you very well to succeed in higher math. He teaches you how to recognize patterns and not just do problems.
Dr. Clemons is a very smart man, and it shows when he lectures. It is often difficult to follow his notes, but he does them quickly in order to get to example problems which are very helpful. Bottom line - it is difficult to get good grades in his class, but he prepares you more than any other professor I've encountered. Be ready to do homework!
Clemons possibly has the best repertoire of amusing stories and anecdotes of any teacher I've had, and is generally extremely likable. If you prepare hard for quizzes and do the homework the material itself becomes of an almost trivial difficulty, as he lays out the steps to solving ODE's very well and his expectations are clear.
Clemons made Calc 2 very manageable. While his tests aren't easy, they are definitely doable if you put in the time. It's also worth noting that he makes the dreaded sequences and series not so hard to learn. As an added bonus, he has all sorts of cool stories about his life. He has 3 tests and weekly quizzes. He does NOT curve.
Tests are incredibly tough, but he often gives out-of-class assignments to balance out the grade. He knows his class is difficult, but he does his best to make up for it. He wants you to pass. Do the homework, and you should be able to understand the material.
Curtis moves very fast and the examples are hard to follow. He does provide help for homework and textbooks problems, and there are exam practices online, but the lecture itself sucks. His handwriting is very sloppy, his explanations dont make sense, and he very often messes up his problems.
Clemons made Calc 3 an enjoyable experience. The secret to doing well in his class is to look at last year's test because they are very similar to what you'll get. Keep up with the homework and you'll do fine!
He was a great teacher. His lectures were always exciting he had a fun story from his life eveyday and the rest of his lecture is very helpful. He is always willing to help his students and he gives good feedback on the tests. Ask him lots of questions he'll answer everyone of them in detail. He doesn't take attendance but go to the class!
Dr Clemons was awesome. Actually cares about teaching and says his job is a privilege. Always made sure we were prepared for quizzes and tests, and was always willing to take extra time to help us understand the material and go over HW and quiz problems. Very personable and approachable, likable guy. Anyone is lucky to have him for any math class
This man is ridiculous. He flies through the material so fast in lectures that nobody can keep up. When asked to slow down, he takes a condescending tone with students. I've never struggled with math in my life, but Clemons has definitely changed that for me.
Clemons is the man! He moves fast, but if you look at the recent tests on Springboard you'll be fine. Diff Eq wasn't bad until Laplace Transforms and Series, but even then it was manageable to get an A. I'm happy I had this guy for Calc 2, 3, and Diff Eq.
This class was the first time I ever got a B in math in my entire life. Nice enough guy, he'll throw a lot of inspirational speeches at you, but when he's teaching he skips steps and talks a mile a minute. Homework is graded on accuracy, there's weekly quizzes, and though he'll try to help you, he's still kind of confusing.
He is a bit scatter brained and can be hard to follow in lectures because of that. While he is very knowledgeable, he forgets that his students are not there yet and sometimes uses techniques that are not taught in prerequisites. A great guy, and a knowledgeable educator, but not always the best communicator. However, practice tests are supplied.
Clemons is a pretty good professor. He can be kind of hard to follow at times in class, but he is willing to answer any and all questions. Puts practice exams on springboard from previous years and the test he gave this year was identical except he changed the numbers. He also pauses a lot during lecture to tell various stories about his life.
Dr. Clemons is alright. His lectures were interesting, more stories about his life than math, but the stories were at least good! He is willing to help you if you don't understand the material though, and he's very nice. Tests were generally straightforward, except for the final, that included a bunch of things he did not teach us.
Dr. Clemons is a little scatterbrained at time, but he is brilliant. Talks a million miles a minute and will make you work for an A. He will always always answer any question in as much depth as he can. He wants to see his students succeed and will often spur of the moment change some quizzes to make them easier if quiz scores are low.
Took this guy for differential equations. I carried a solid grade going into the final, then the final was made unbearably hard which hurt my grade in the class. Class notes are hard to follow and he goes WAY too fast. Claims it's his style of teaching, but in reality he's just a bad teacher. Quizzes are way too hard. Some quizzes are take home.
I had Dr. Clemens for differential equations in Summer 2017. I've never had a professor who cared about his students as much as him. I can speak from his summer DIFFEQ CLASS is easy. He lays out all past summer exams. Same questions except numbers are changed slightly. It was so easy didn't work hard at all and I enjoyed going to his class everyday
Curtis Clemons teaches like he is trying to impress you with his math ability. He moves way too fast, doesn't explain any of his work, and is condescending when you ask him to slow down or explain what he's done. You will get a much better grade if you only go to class when necessary and just follow along out of the textbook.
Dr. Clemons is truly a great professor, one of the best the Mathematics department has. Taught Complex Variables after the teachers got swapped around and it was the best thing to happen. He made this difficult class simple and understandable. Lots of homework, but it's graded for a large portion of the overall grade and helps with exams.
He is an amazing person but not a great teacher. He shows stuff that you don't need to know for the test. His writing on the board is close to illegible. However if you do not come to class you will not receive the graded homework or know what is on the weekly quizzes. Have fun teaching yourself outside of class.
Prof. Clemons tells a lot of cool stories that will make you feel terrible about yourself for not doing better in life. As a prof. he is absolutely terrible. He expects you to know everything and wont explain content. You will be better off skipping class and reading the book and going to a tutor. If you ask a question, be prepared to feel stupid
Had him for calc 3. Good luck reading the board, his handwriting is some of the worst I have ever seen, albeit complains about students handwriting weekly. If you ask a question you can guarantee that he will make you feel stupid. He enjoys telling a lot of stories, who knows how many are true. Need help? He will tell you to just talk to the TA.
He starts off as a nice professor on the first day of class but everything gets rushed starting the second day of class. He rushes through the material and when asked a question he gets annoyed and expects you to know everything just because he does. He is very smart but sometimes puts students down. Made me feel stupid and afraid to ask for help.
Moves very fast in class and hard to keep up, especially with his poor handwriting. Helps with questions in class but does so with an attitude. Grading is pretty forgiving, in his calc 3 class he drops the two lowest quizes and homeworks. You do one quiz and hw per week. 3 exams and a final for the class. He often goes off on a tangent.
Dr. Clemons is very knowledgeable in many areas of life but he is very difficult to learn from. His stories and life advice are fantastic though. He isn't very good at giving partial credit on tests so be ready for that. Make sure you study a LOT of problems from the book because his practice exams weren't similar to the tests except for the final.
I took Dr. Clemons for a 5 week Diff Eq class. The exams were identical to the practice exams he gives from the prior semesters, so it is very straightforward; but the man has a very bad habit of telling the same stories over and over again from his life. He also has a tendency to belittle you for asking questions that seem elementary to him.
Dr. Clemons really is a great professor. Sure, he might not have the greatest handwriting, but he is one of the few professors at this university that truly cares about his students. He is very busy but will go out of his way to help you. He provides everything you need to succeed in his class if you are willing to put in the work required for it.
I would suggest you avoid taking this professor. I took Differential Equations with him over the summer: awful. Condescending answers to questions and extremely unorganized lectures. Want to know the section being covered, background information, or whats important? Good luck finding that here. You have to teach yourself the class.
Clemons maybe a nice guy but his lectures are very scattered and doesnt finish any problems he starts. He expects you to finish them at home but since he doesnt teach you have no clue how to do them. Practice tests are nothing like the actual tests. Makes you feel stupid if you dont know how to do certain problems and steps. Wouldnt recommend
Clemons speeds through every lecture and does not like to answer questions thoroughly. He only does examples part of the way through and skips many steps and expects you to understand how he got the answer. His exams are very high-leveled and he grades very hard. He makes lots of mistake and is very inconsistent with grading. Would not recommend.
Clemons cares about his students, I'll give him that. He's sweet so I ALMOST feel bad giving him this horrible review. His Calculus lectures made no sense. He is dyslexic so his writting and explanations make NO sense. Teach yourself the class if you want to pass. Quiz every week, 3 exams and a final. No homework so your tests define your grade.
Only gave 1 star because 0 stars wasnt an option. I was not in honors calc 2 but my class was given all the same work. I went to tutoring and put in the max amount of work and had fantastic quiz scores; I know the material. Others in my class had similar experiences, and we were informed that we had a 30% passing rate. NEVER take a class with him.
Clemons likes to talk about how hard his life was as if all his students are pampered and sheltered. If he spent the same amount of time just teaching DiffEQ that he did talking about farming and creating millionaires Im sure his students would actually learn. He told us how he birthed cows and used that experience to help his wife give birth.
He cares a lot about his students, but not a great prof. Consistently made mistakes in probs on the board w/ new material and said, "check me," even though we barely learned it. Many times he never finished examples and skipped over essential steps when teaching a new topic. He expected that you look at a problem and see a final answer right away.
Clemon's is a terrible lecturer, he has terrible handwriting and he flies through concepts so fast that you have no chance to learn them. I basically learned this entire class at the tutoring center since his teaching was so poor. I'd recommend staying away from him at all costs and taking a professor that actually teaches their class.
Dr. Clemons is the worst Calculus professor there is. I took him online during the pandemic and he was not understanding one bit. Calculus 2 is already hard enough in person, let alone completely online. No homework to help us pull up our grades, no curves on tests even when averages were below a 60. Half the class dropped. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Don't let my grade fool you, it was brutal. He taught two classes of calculus 2 that semester and the passing rate for the class was 30%.The grading rubric isn't too terrible, no graded hw, quizzes weekly and 3 tests and final. However, while he claims to care about students, he is incredibly unhelpful. Every waking minute I was doing calculus.0/10
Avoid this professor for math. In his lectures, he flies over his notes which are nearly impossible to decipher and he skips steps constantly. Also, he will accuse you of cheating if you don't answer things the exact way he taught them because "there is no point in looking things up from the internet" when you have his notes.
He cares a lot about his students, especially when you are friendly and nice to him. He can be a little harsh sometimes, but thats usually only when people ask questions he already answered. As long as you are nice and good to him, hell give the same to you.
Just awful. Do not take this professor, ever. I learned absolutely nothing and was sad the entire semester because of this class.
Great professor. We need more like him. All notes of old tests and quizzes are provided upfront, so you know exactly what you are getting into. It is up to you to study. Those who fail his courses are simply lazy.
Nice enough guy but terrible prof. Lectures are nonsense. Stands in front of board blocking view and erases before you can see it. Gets upset if you ask questions. Will spend 15+ minutes telling useless stories. Had to drop after the first exam avg was below 50% Exams were nothing like his examples from past years. Quiz every Fri. Stay away!
Clemons is a very intelligent guy that knows what he is talking about. He goes very fast during lectures however all his notes are posted online so you can always go back later. A lot of material is posted online such as old quizzes and tests, if you don't pass its on you.
Do not take Clemons if you have a choice. He goes too fast over the material and gets upset at students like they're his kids. He gives you past quizzes and exams to study, then changes the format of the question or adds in something that makes it different than the last quizzes. So if you study what he tells you to study, you can still do poorly.
I want to recommend Clemons for Diff Eq, but I just can't. He knows the material very well. He gives old exams and quizzes to study. He scolded a student saying they would get fired in a real job for not knowing that he switched the quiz day without an announcement, because attendance is not required. It's not required, but he still gets mad.
He provides lots of past quizzes and exams, so studying isn't an issue. However, he has poor handwriting, makes lots of mistakes, and constantly stands in front of the whiteboard making it hard to take notes. Will sometimes get frustrated when you ask questions or want to use a different method than the one he thinks is the best.
