Cool teacher, but can't really teach that well. Teaches in a way that he understands what he is talking about and leaves the class with blank stares.
He is a very helpful teacher. I would definately take him
He understands the material very well, so automatically he thinks you will too. Trys to help but doesnt dumb it down very well. who know what he is talking about? only he does. that cant be good.
Very CLEAR. Good Communicator. Great guy.
Give Curtis a shot. He's laid back & very knowledgeable. You just need to SHOW UP to class and ask Q's. Assigns HW but doesn't collect it. Understands that it's all about the TESTS and not doing HW. Even though I struggled the entire semester, I managed to get a passing grade. He's a good guy.
He made the class too difficult for every student. He is a great guy, but just doesnt make math as easy as it should be! Do Not take him for M01 or M03
This class was fairly easy. I just hated asking a question because he makes you feel like a moron. That is what I experienced.
I thought Curtis did an excellent job with the material. I never had trouble following. In addition he's a very intersting and laid back guy. Assigns homework but does not check it. Option to not take one test but then the final is worth an additonal 10% of grade.
Good guy. Teaching is a learning experience too. Judging by the past comments he is getting better and his unique perspective should contribute alot to the math world. I advise all teachers to just talk to your students like they are complete idiots, because we are <|:-)
Nice enough guy but not the most encouraging person on the first day of semester. Probably fine but since math is not my strong suit, I needed someone I felt I could ask any "dumb" math questions. Take Cruz, she is clear, helpful and patient with "dumb" questions. No calcs or Ex cr. which is fine. Just don't want to be in confusing math hell.
He really is a great teacher, and yes he does make you feel like your questions are dumb, but he doesnt bring you down. His class is actually really fun, and its not that hard. I would recomend taking him any time.
I knew nothing about math before taking Curtis and by the end of the semester I had a B in the class. He is the best math teacher I have ever had and I feel I am prepared for my next math challenge.
Awful teacher. Very smart. However, he's also very impatient and pessimistic. There were numerous times where he even stated that "[he] doesn't even know why [he's' teaching" or "[he] doesn't know how long [he] can take it anymore". If you want a good teacher, my advise is to take Cruz. This teacher is bad news.
He's such a sweet guy and ... i took him when i was a freshman in high school.. i think... I don't remember.. but his curriculum was pretty relaxed... He's very friendly.
He tries and all, but has a mindset that we understand the material much better than we actually do. Has a few random problems to show on the board that have nothing to do with the class. Grades only tests, pretty tough class, I wouldnt recommend taking him unless you have an advanced ability to learn quickly. His class avg. was 55%
He's a nice guy, no question about that. The biggest problem i had with him is he doesn't prepare you well for the tests (which is your entire grade). Would often review material before test that isn't on it. You better learn every sub section of every chapter since he gives no insight in what to expect and what not.
Class is unorganized, no workable syllabus. It doesn't tell you what to study to prepare for class, when tests are, or what he will be covering. You must go to class to find out when the tests are and then he tests you on subject matter not covered in class. Talks about everything except math. By far the worst teacher at Mrpk. RUN !!FAST!!!
He is very nice but I need a different type teacher. I am an A student and got an A in my previous math class. I dropped because I didn't know what to expect. He brags about how many people drop his class and he told us he hates teaching math 07. Unless you were born with a math book in your hand, try someone else. He is difficult to follow.
worst math teacher ever!!!!! avoid this guy! trust me he is unclear and unorginized!!
Best math teacher I've ever had, bar none. Knows his stuff like no other professor and is more than capable and willing of answering any question. His teaching style is technical. He expects you to do the exercises at home and come to class with questions. Do that and you'll learn a ton.
Rater7/9/07 has to be Paul himself, no one in there right mind would call him a good teacher.Maybe a good babysitter, cuz after his ten minute lecture he will sit there and watch you for two hours.Test are very hard,i think the highest grade in the class was a B-.Hes arrogant, stubborn & obviously liberal. Please for your own sake, don't take him!
Just started and dont think he is that unwilling to teach but he is really lackadasicle with class and tests. But most coments on here say highest averadge was 55%!.!.!HOLY-S.....
nice guy, but to study for the final he had his failing students teach, and each problem took 20 minutes. by the first hour everyone was fed up from not learning/studying and we had only done 3 problems, as he sat in a chair. doesnt tell you what to study for and though clear, unless you do all the work every night you wont know what he's talking a
He is a nice person...but sometimes he can be kinda mean....but still he's ok.If you work hard in this class and if you (important!!)do all home work you'll be fine.
Just awful. I mean the guy really knows his stuff but he doesn't care about the students and will blatently tell you that. He doesn't move slowly. And he really doesn't simplfy or clarify what is going on in a problem to students that do need more explanation. I would never recommend this teacher to anyone. Awful.
This teacher has no desire whatsoever in seeing his students succeed. I suggest not taking this class! I am usually an A student this is the first class I have ever failed/withdrew from and I have been in school 14 years now!
I liked him. Lots of people didn't, but I found his cynical rants fun. The class was fairly clear, and followed the book in a way that made it easy to catch up if I fell behind. He's an interesting person overall, and I learned more about the economy during the break of that class than ever before. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Cannot relate to students. Cannot teach so students learn material- cannot level. Knows math but doesn't seem concern in student's education or giving them skills to pass the class. Syllabus & class VERY unorganize. Doesn't guide-homework or examples on board. Talks down to students- discourages. Asked for more examples, he has blind lead blind-us!
Worst teacher I have ever seen. If you want to go to college to waste your money and not learn a thing about math.....Curtis is the right teacher for you. My 8th grade algebra teacher got through to us better in a day than he ever could. HORRIBLE>>>simply pathetic. But he is a nice guy.
absolutely horrible teacher!!!! should not be teaching! is not clear on material, fails to relate to students, no slack on students having a hard time, sets a very poor confidence atmosphere. i seriously do not reccomend him to anyone.
terrible terrible teacher,he has even said if he wasn't so lazy he'd be an English teacher. All he does is write the examples from the book onto the board, only 13 students are left in the class and he tells us that only half of us are going to pass,he also said that attendance is not mandatory, yet he makes comments about when people are absent.
I had him about 10 years ago for both Calc 1&2. I thought he was pretty good. I'm surprised at all the bad reviews. Remember - math can be a tough subject for some. He can't change the amount of material that must be taught. You have to do HW and study. Most tough courses you're going to be teaching yourself. If I could, I'd take him again.
i like math, but he was a horrible teacher. i figured i could get my G.E math class out easy with elem. algebra, and i ended up getting a C. right on the first day, he tells us he has no faith in us and that half of us will drop and the next half will not pass. he does not teach.
I enjoyed being in Paul's class. His teaching was "university style". Meaning, he expects you to keep up with your reading and come in with questions so he can clear up any problems you may have with the material. People in lower level math classes wont appreciate his teaching style, but being in Linear Algebra, I feel he has helped prepare me for
"university style" what a joke. i am a University Engineering grad and can say he is anything but university style. he's lazy and arrogant. Only does book examples and won't grade above a B. Expect a 10 min lecture and homework alone time after. worst worst worst teacher EVER!. he's not even a teacher. stay away.
The first day of class he told us half of the class would fail; by the Final only 12 of the original 35 students were left and I ended up failing. He only does the examples from the book, so might as well take an online class because he is no more helpful than reading the text book. Dreaded going to this class, very boring. I do not recommend him!
Only take this class if you are a self sustaining student. He is nice and laid back but does not explain how to do problems very effectively.
Whole class was based on the example problems in the book so if you fall behind it's not too hard to catch up. He's cool because he doesn't make you learn the pointless stuff the book has. Tests aren't too bad if you keep up with the homework. The most annoying thing is the pop quizes, he says its up to the "math gods" if we take one.
Such a joke. The class average for the first exam was 42%, the class average for the second exam was 51%. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY, purposely tricks you on the exam. Ive never gotten lower than an A in a math class, and Ive never gotten a W before in my 3 years at Moorpark until I took this fools class. I seriously hope he gets fired. Unforgivable.
Cutis Paul uses university style teaching, in other words, "teach yourself." This guy is lazy. He prefers that students learn on their own by reading the text and asking about problems that they do not understand. You don't know what he wants you to learn or what to expect on the exams. Do not take his classes, he suxs big time as an "instructor."
Nice guy, will prepare you for next level of Math. Fair grader. Will go over questions until you understand. Will get your tests back to you in good time so you can work on weak area's. Does not race ahead and will take time to help. If Math isn't your strong point do the homework, go to class and ask questions
He is a genius. University style class, no homework, no quizes, no extra credit, no curving. ask questions from self assigned homework, he explains multiple ways. class average very low, you have to know everything from prereqs. he will not review for you. he is a good guy but only take him if you are enthusaistic about math. 5 test and final.
Do not take this teacher! He expects you to be able to graph any given function in your head, the test averages are like 50%, and no opportunity to get hw or quiz points. He doesn't know how to teach and will definitely confuse you.
This guy is AWFUL. I dropped. The first day he says only 10 will pass the class, already giving you negative thinking. He does everything in his head which makes his lectures unclear. You learn a whole section in 2 days which makes it SO hard to follow, never reviewing the previous content. Says his 7 year old son is smarter than us, doesnt care.
Mr Paul knows calc crazy well, just not the best at teaching it. it is a hard crazy subject to learn though. that said, i didnt do any of the homework, just studied before the tests and i got a C so its totally doable. if you're serious about passing, dont be intimidated by not so great reviews, study and work at it, i got a C playin it real lazy
He will encourage you to know the material but has no emotional investment in whether or not you succeed. He's actually one of my favorite teachers, his classes are as much about life as they are about math, he's the kind of teacher that everyone deserves but rarely we get. He thinks calculators are the devil, though, so be prepared to learn things
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. The first day is hell; he goes over what you should have learned in the previous class, but it was all Greek to me. Which is odd since I got a B in the previous class. He doesn't know how to teach, AT ALL. He makes everything 10x more confusing.
Don't take this teacher. He is lazy and does NOT provide any kind of handouts or study guides. Lectures are inexplicable and difficult to learn. You basically have to teach yourself. Tests are very difficult.
excellent teacher. Sometimes a little unclear, but if you ask him to explain it again, he will. You have to invest time to pass the class. Tests are on the easy side, and if you do practice problems from the book, you will do fine. The only bad thing is that he is not very structured, but if you overlook that fault, you will enjoy his teaching.
An excellent teacher. However, I'd recommend this class only to those willing to invest the necessary amount of time. Tests are very fair, however, he occasionally throws in a difficult one. Studying the even questions from the textbook will undoubtedly garner an A. All work is done without a calculator, so those with bad basics will get hurt.
Wouldn't recommend this teacher. Has no passion in helping students succeed and does a poor job of preparing you for what's on his tests
Best math teacher that Ive ever had. I feel like Ive been blind to what mathematics really is before i met this guy. Take only if you want to learn.
He gos as fast as the class wants.. you can ask him any question... funny attitude.. real nice guy if you do the work.. no grade curv. rolls dice for pop quizes every day exsept test day.. 1 in 3 chance of a quiz.. ask for help and he will Help
He's a real smart guy and knows his stuff, but at this level it's more on your shoulders than the teacher. I think he did a pretty good job of relaying the info and explains things clearly if you ask. Other than that I would recommend him.
Overall hes a very smart teacher, but he expects you to know so much Trig. If you know your precalc he is a really good teacher, and he does homework review. If you do your homework you will pass the class, but it is by far the hardest class I have ever taken.
An amazing teacher who goes by the pace of the class. Although he does give off a scary vibe at the beginning of the year, if you do the homework and study for the tests and actually are willing to take a class at a university level, he's your man. No extra credit, no homework, no curves and nobs when it comes to this teacher. I would recommend him
Really good teacher. I don't understand why his ratings are so bad. I'll admit the first day of class I thought I was gonna dislike him but he knows exactly what he is doing. I understood everything he taught and if I had questions he would be more than happy to answer them. I would recommend this teacher. Downer: random quizzes.
You will learn calculus in this class. Curtis bases his teaching around his class's needs and is fairly clear about what will and will not be on exams. Pay attention, do the odd problems in your textbook (and some even problems), and ask TONS of questions. For your final grade, he'll give you the benefit of the doubt if you've shown effort.
One of the best teachers at MC. Sure he says that only 10 people will pass his class, but of the 11 of us at the end of the semester, we all passed. If you think he teaches at a "university level," please don't bother transferring because you'll be surprised how much you'll miss Curtis. Enjoy baby math, because real math is a monster.
Curtis is one of the gems at Moorpark I would recommend. He has heart for the subject, and if you show your interest in learning he will help you grow. There are no bullsht assignments in this class, just pure Socratic-style Q&A learning.
He is a great teacher. If you want to learn real math take this class. No home works or quizzes are assigned but if you go over the end of the chapter problems, the class is an easy A. I highly recommend this teacher.
I had taken him sometime back, he's difficult in that help wasnt available. Students would ask for help. His response- read the text and that they should know the material. As a professor I would not give him a five star but for personality it's a better. Keep in mind, students want to pass not know a professor on a personal level.
he doent give u homework, he only does the examples out of the book for his lectures. class is all fun and cool when all he talks about is Georgia and gives you 30 min breaks, but comes test day, yous going in blind and thats all it counts tourds your gread in the class. i dont NOT recommend him at all.
I dropped this class because I was going to fail, but it's on me. If you take Curtis you must have a good background in the previous courses (in my case, Calc 1 and Trig). He only grades tests so anyone who thinks it's his fault they failed is simply lazy! He's always willing to help students out.
Shouldn't be a teacher. Too lazy to collect and grade any papers but the tests are very hard and does absolutely no prep- work. 60%-70% will fail. Don't TAKE it.
Curtis is straightforward and very laid back. No homework, no grading curve, no emphasis on memorization. Basically all he asks is that you use logic and reason instead of just plugging numbers into formulas. He wants you to see how things work, and that's exactly what I got out of his class.
Do not take unless you absolutely have to. Skips steps, goes off topic, confusing at times. No set schedule, he just shows up to class and does examples out of textbook. Entire grade based solely on test scores, do not take him if you arent a good test taker. Didnt like it and would not recommend. 2/10
Honestly worst math teacher out there. Most apathetic and lazy so-called professor, pays no attention to student issues, and belittles students for having issue with the subject at hand. Studying is a must but rarely helps because he is so cryptic about his reasoning.
Talked too much about politics for a Math class, typical college professor. Didn't really teach much per se. Probably better teachers out there, wouldn't take him again if I had the choice. Teaching seemed like a fall back for him. Put men down frequently which got annoying pretty quick. If you like a guy whos wife wears the pants he's your man.
Favorite teacher I have ever had. Very funny & entertaining, class is never boring. He is really great at explaining everything and will take the class as slow or as fast as everyone likes. Very nice and great at answering questions. He made me remember how much I really love math and how talented at it I am
this professor was the absolute worst. he can not teach at all. tests are crazy hard. doesn't answer questions. TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO FAIL.
Took another semester with Curtis and was not disappointed. May seem mean/difficult, but really just expects you to be an adult. Pay attention, do your work, and ask questions if you need help. His tests are taken straight from the textbook & he is an easy grader. Those who complain don't understand how to take responsibility or initiative.
Phew! I really worked super, super, hard so i could get the impossible A, but I ended up getting a B. No extra credit, no homework. Your grades are based solely off of your exam results so you gotta be careful, but Paul is very helpful, super laid back too. Also you get some cool and inspiring pep talks every now and then. =)
He was nice but the way he teach didn't really helpful.
Horrible teacher. Not very clear on how to do things, and tests are much more difficult than what he teaches. Would advise against taking him for anything.
I loved Curtis Paul's class, i managed to get a B even though i messed up really badly in the first test(i got a D for that one) if you talk to him about it he's usually willing to drop a really bad test as long as your other tests are relatively better. i would definitely take his class again though it may be confusing for some.
Worst math professor I have ever had. He doesn't take his job seriously , which is shown through his lack of preparedness for class. He doesn't explain the material well, and shows an odd way of solving problems. He basically just wants you to teach yourself, and for him to help you with homework problems. He needs to give up on teaching.
He shouldn't be teaching. He expects you to learn everything straight from the book. He spends the entire class period going over questions people had on the HW. If you want to be taught Math, don't take him. If you want to teach yourself, then I'd recommend him. Overall as a teacher I'd give him a 410. Not being mean, that's the honest truth.
WORST CLASS EVER! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU'RE A MATHEMATICAL GENIUS! You basically have to teach yourself. Plus it's calculus! Had to drop the class with a W. : by the time I dropped there were only 7-10 students left with a class size of 40 so that should tell you something about him. AVOID HIM COMPLETELY!!
At the beginning of the semester, he say's what is expected to pass. Your grade is only 5 tests but that can be a good or bad thing. The test are pretty difficult too so if you mess up the first couple tests, you will probably have to drop the class or work hard for a C. He's very laid back so if you need help, he is very approachable.
Didn't do too well in this class, failed because the class is graded only on test and quiz grades. No calculators allowed, very difficult. Homework is not required, you have to kinda self teach yourself the work. Hardest class ever.
If you are taking this class, may god have mercy on your soul. It WILL be tough, you will be self teaching quiet a bit. Tests are insanely long, I didn't finish any of the tests I took before dropping. Also, from what I heard there were like 6 people out of 40 left at the end of the semester. Make sure your basics are in tip top shape!
Honestly, I did well in his differential equations class. However, he does not care about his students. It is obvious. He does not try to prepare lectures, and your grade is only based on several tests. You can miss class and do just fine because his lectures are pretty useless. He requires a lot of calc b and algebra knowledge.
The purpose of any class is to absorb material at hand and to meet tangible realistic standards. Curtis Paul's attitude is that one should not be "spoonfed" (taught methods directly) and that paradoxically one learns more effectively when material is more abstract. He commented that he tries to put things on exams that "nobody has seen before."
Paul is a bit of an enigma of a professor. As someone else stated, he doesn't believe in the concept of being "spoonfed" the material; he expects you to take initiative and read the book, do some of the problems, and the following class ask him any questions that might arise from doing them- which he will do in earnest. This IS his teaching style.
WORST TEACHER. I honestly don't believe people when they write that. But Curtis is the most horrible teacher I have ever had. He comes to class asking what chapter and just has the students teach, not him. He walks out of the class during tests and does not care about his students. Avoid him at all costs and believe me. HE'S HORRIBLE.
I've never failed a class before, his was the first. Tests: impossible. does not explain ANYTHING. expects you to be pro @everything before calc. if you want to save yourself the headache, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. something must be wrong with the teaching if most of the class fails everything. if you wanna give it a go, calc must be your life
Couldn't teach to save a life. Makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question (especially if he thinks he has gone over it). To pass you must read ahead and do the homework ahead of time so you can ask questions (who has the time?!). Otherwise, he will stand there saying "any questions" while drinking a diet coke until someone asks. AVOID!!
DONOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Super hard, almost impossible to pass. Worked very hard and still did not pass. Class started out full and on the day of the final there was 6 left. HORRIBLE teachers, does not care at all about students.
Class started as a huge class of like 50 kids. Ended with around 10. The teacher thinks that he is doing a service and that these kids are a testament that the material is doable. Funny thing is that I've seen some of the 10 cheating, so really in reality he is only passing (or giving good grades) to kids who are geniuses or dishonest.
Curtis is an extremely intelligent guy, the problem is that does not always make someone a good prof. If you have a mathematical mind and put in the work you will do fine. I found talking with him one on one was more helpfull than sitting through class. Nothing is that hard if you put in the work.
This professor is so unorganized. He would ask us when we wanted to take our tests. It felt like he thought we already knew the subject so he didn't really explain things at all. He is really intelligent but just isn't a good teacher especially if you struggle with math to begin with. I DO NOT recommend this professor.
Worst teacher I've ever had. And I've already graduated from a 4 year with a BA. He literally does not teach. Just goes through examples from the book. Never knows what section we are on or what we have covered. Doesn't curve tests even when the average was 45!! He always preaches that students need to study but he is the one who needs to teach.
Paul's teaching style is terrible. He expects you to learn on your own from the textbook and doesn't actually teach you anything. He spends time in class answering one or two peoples questions, but rarely is ANYONE on the same page. If you read this review, and take his class, not only will you fail, but I will laugh at you for failing, I warned u.
HE IS TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!!! HE DOES NOT EXPLAIN THE MATERIAL AT ALL AND SHOWS UP TO CLASS NOT KNOWING WHERE WE LEFT OFF. THERE IS NO ORGANIZATION AND HOMEWORK IS OPTIONAL. HE BELITTLES STUDENTS FOR ASKING QUESTIONS AND IF MATH IS NOT YOUR STRONGEST SUBJECT I SUGGEST DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Expects a lot from you. Really makes you work for it. If you don't have A good foundation for math don't take it. If you do, take it you will learn a lot. Focuses on logic behind the topics so you truly understand it. Gives you past tests for extra practice if you ask
This class was awful. We started with btw 30-40 students, but only 7 passed with a C or better. He is a very nice person and beyond intelligent, but the lectures were so unclear that I struggled the whole time. There is no actual assigned HW. Sounds nice, but when there are 200 problems in each section it would help to know which ones are relevant!
Curtis is a genius and a great guy -- not a great teacher. He doesn't take attendance or grade homework, and it's up to you to work hard and make sure you know the material. If you don't go to class you won't know what to expect on the tests. His tests are hard but you can argue your grade if you have good enough logic. spoiler alert: he curves
Curtis does not teach! Period. He assumes you JUST took College Algebra and are clear with all of it, even though most of the students in the class haven't taken it for years. His tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard. No one gets an A. At least 3/4 the class fails the exams. The only grades in the class are 4 tests. If you fail them, you fail the class.
Paul was good. If you participate a lot you're fine. He answered all my questions. He's actually a genius so it's interesting to hear him talk. His tests weren't too bad if you did the homework you passed just put in the damn effort like you should in college.
Take this class if you are strong in math if you struggle you will probably get a W fast. He can't teach he makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. The class starts out with about 30 students and ends with like 5 people (he tells you this the first day IT'S TRUE!!!) Instead of him teaching he just drinks a diet coke and smiles weird at you....
I took him awhile back. If you take his class, you pretty much have to be self-sufficient because he doesn't really teach. The grade is based on 4 test, no hw so you really have to study hard on your own. He is very laid back, which could be a good or bad thing for some people. Only take him if you are naturally good at math, otherwise avoid.
This professor is not a teacher! He is disorganized, class time is spent answering a couple of questions and then he belittles and laughs at his students when they don't understand a concept or ask questions. He expects you to learn on your own from the textbook. Grading is based only on four tests, which most students fail. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
He could careless about any student. The first thing he told the class was that only 30% will pass the class. I am very good at math, it comes natural to me, but after failing the first two tests i had to drop it. It is not the material it is the teacher. I am now taking it with a different teacher and i am acing the class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
His lectures aren't real lectures. Instead of teaching he expects you to learn from the book, do example problems (he won't recommend any), and bring all questions to class for clarification. It is extremely hard to pass this class without trying very hard outside of class and learning the material yourself.
This professor believes in his students working hard to actually learn the material. He doesn't really care if you never come to class and only show up for the tests as long as you are learning the material on your own. For lectures, he mostly just talks about concepts rather than actually doing the problem. Only take if you're a natural at maths.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had. He may be smart but he doesn't know how to teach whatsoever. 90% of his class failed the test and he said he's not going to curve it, yet he says "I'm not trying to make you fail" as if we're all just stupid and didn't study for the test. When 5 people are left in your class that should tell you something!!
Curtis Paul is a ridiculously intelligent Professor and generally a good human. Have no problems with him personally. Good lectures/Hard tests. With that being said, he expects a LOT from his students. He expects that your precalc and trig skills are absolutely perfect and expects that you learn the material by doing the homework after the lecture
Oh Curtis... In all honesty, he's probably one of the coolest guys i've ever met. He's super intelligent, and we'd have random, interesting discussions in class sometimes. Putting all that aside, he CANNOT teach. He makes everything very confusing, and his tests are pretty hard. Somehow pulled a C in that class. TAKE ONLY IF YOU LOVE/LIVE MATH.
Curtis Paul wants you to succeed but he's not there to babysit you. You have to participate, ask questions, and just do your job as a student. Very straightforward guy. Yes he does examples from the book but he'll also send you practice tests and come up with more practice problems. He wants to help, but no one in my class ever asked.
this class is impossible unless you are fully dedicated. calculus is a very tough course, and the class is graded on only three tests and a final without any quizzes prior. would not recommend this teacher.
His personality is warm, he is very into hiking and has many interesting opinions on the world. When it comes to teaching he is very accommodating. He is always willing to answer questions with in-depth explanation, but you have to show up, pay attention and really understand the content in order to pass the tests. Whole grade was 4 tests and final
Most difficult class I have ever taken. He teaches like we already know the topic or like we think exactly like he does. His teaching style and my learning style clashed. The course was only 4 tests and a final. The whole class did terrible on a test (seriously the avg was in the 30's) offered to replace lowest test grade with final grade.
Worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't care if his entire class is failing and he seems very unmotivated to do anything about it. I was very disappointed in him as a teacher. If you struggle in math DO NOT take him. Trust me you're not gonna pass.
Don't take this professor! But if you get stuck like I did, make sure you do the homework & ask questions quickly. He'd skip steps that made me so lost that I didn't even know what questions to ask. Get a tutor too. You'll need it because he can't teach. The only good thing I can say about him is that he looks like Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter.
Curtis is a nice guy with pretty good intentions, but I would not recommend taking the class. His lectures are not useful so you'd have to be prepared to teach the entire 7 chapters to yourself. This isn't really a class that is easy to do on your own (or without helpful lectures) and the entire class is based on 4 exams and 1 assignment.
Do not take. Does curve the class and his tests are unfairly difficult. It would be a different story if he's a good professor, but he isn't and expects his students to still do well. His class only consists of examples from the textbook. Whenever he does problems, he skips steps and is terrible at explaining. For the sake of your GPA, AVOID him.
Skips steps and doesnt do a good job at communicating the material to the students. Exams are difficult and are the only things that are graded. If you do end up with him, a lot of studying and YouTube Calc channels is necessary. And sometimes even that is not enough. Give or take, a handful of students in the class passed.
This instructor has WAY TOO high standards for students' skills. He is cynical of students asking any questions about subjects from previous classes and ridicules the student that they should already have mastered it. Grade is based only on minimal amount of tests. Class is only good for the smartest of math students. Tests are pure trickiness.
This professor is definitely AS BAD as the reviews say. I thought I could handle it but I was wrong as long with the 3 people that were left in the class. Your grade is basically 4 exams that he does not prepare you well for.
This professor was extremely difficult. At the end of the class only 3 people were in good enough standing to even take the Final and pass the class. He makes a lot of jokes about getting paid no matter how many people pass. The grade is based on 4 Exams which the majority failed. If you are confident in your abilities go ahead and try: Good Luck
Tough grader. Do your work and studying, if you dont, do not expect to pass the any of the tests. Ask Questions! Very smart Professor if youre a genius youll be just fine if not good luck!
The worst math professor Moorpark College has to offer
I cannot stress enough that this professor is as bad as the reviews say. I took this course even after reading the reviews and thought I'd be fine because math is one of my strong suits. I did the 2+ hours of work per day that he suggested, but I still did not pass. This class was a waste of time and money. Do not take this professor!
Nah G I thought I was good by preparing myself for Curtis. But I was wrong. Tests are the most difficult thing even if you study your hardest (including studying before/after class at the tutoring center). Your grade is only based on four chapter tests and a cumulative final exam. Also, he expects way too much from you. Don't take this prof.
Paul Curtis is a mixed bag in my opinion. On the one hand he is very knowledgeable and really wants you to pass. On the other hand, he is a very tough grader and the class is based on 3 HARD tests plus final. So if you fail one test, it kills your grade. Unless you are willing to put in the effort necessary to study, dont bother. Not an easy C..
He brags how only 5-6 people pass his class out of 30 people who enroll. I don't think that's something to brag about. Your grade is only based off exams and not allowed to use a calculator. He doesn't teach and tells us to just read the book and he doesn't need to teach us. He literally just sits at his desk and drinks coke.
Ruuuuuuun
Makes you think putting in a lot of effort is all you need to pass the class. 2 out of 30 passed ours. Lectures mean going through book examples while skipping past the algebra "your supposed to know." 4 tests, your' entire grade, no rounding, no dropping tests. Doesn't care if you don't understand. Gets mad at questions. Tests different then book.
Curtis doesnt care whether you succeed or not, so you have to take the initiative and put in the work. Take him if youre willing to devote the time and actually understand the material. Do his practice tests, not the textbook. He will round/drop if you can prove you deserve a better grade
Curtis is actually pretty good. Class is very hard, but he is a great teacher. Very smart. He is definitely a lot nicer than what the review says. He even taught someone how to do long division in a calc 2 class, which is pretty incredible considering he even did it nicely. Tests are pretty fair. Questions comes from homework and past tests.
Not the best math teacher Ive had, definitely not the worst though. Just average. He lets you know right from the beginning the way things go and how its up to you to put in the effort to pass the class. If you are unable to put in the necessary time to study dont bother, as his tests are completely based on homework questions. Good luck!
Whatever you do, DON'T take this guy. Says that calculus isn't difficult but rather simple even though he's dedicated his whole life to that one subject. Tests are brutal. P.S. there are only 5. You also can't cheat in his class because nobody knows the answers. But outside of class, when he isn't failing you, he seems like a chill guy.
Curtis is great for Math majors (only). He says that he is not a lecturer, but he provides a very unique perspective on the concepts covered in his class that you won't find anywhere else. He wants you to succeed if you work hard. Hw's up to you. 4 tests/final; ask him about how he graded your tests to possibly get a higher score. He's chill, too.
Not the best, not the worst. Much of our grade came from simply turning in hw, but that was because of the sudden switch to online. Probably a much tougher course if he returns to only using tests for grading
Curtis Paul is the single worst instructor I have ever encountered in my 14 years of education. He belittles students, spends much of class talking about himself, and jokes about how many students fail his class. He has a drop rate of 75% and yet Moorpark College still won't fire him. He is not a very nice person and he does not know how to teach.
He was my first math professor and I honestly don't want to take math ever again. Everything was online because of COVID-19, but he never lectured the class at all. My other professors would send videos of them lecturing or hold zoom meetings but he only held office hours. He would also give like two units a week which was very stressful.
I would not recommend taking this course during distance learning. He does no teaching, only gives random videos from youtube that barely relate to the topic and all assignments are on Knewton Alta with no real instructions. He doesn't respond to emails and offers no extra help in understanding the materials.
Professor Curtis is honestly a great teacher. I took him for two classes and it was the best choice. Although there isn't any lectures, he is always willing to help. There is a lot of Homework, but it is doable. For it being online, everything was well set up and you knew what you needed to do.
I had an A the entire class but then failed the final because I didn't have enough time to study with work. It's just a hard class honestly. He did a good job teaching but you have to study alot if you want to pass.
I only took this course because Moorpark was pushing it and at first I thought it was going to be an interesting alternative to an algebra course. The homework and quizzes wasn't bad and same with the discussions. Writing assignments in a math class was just not my thing. He also wasn't clear that he wanted like a couple page paper either.
Shame theres no zero on here because Paul was one of the worst professors Ive had. Prepare to teach yourself because he does not teach whatsoever. Also, he is not encouraging, caring, and in any respectful when it comes to providing his students with nice criticism. I HIGHLY recommend not taking his class.
I am definitely not a fan of his way of teaching. He lacks organization or format for his teaching. He sort of teaches "on the spot." This does not mean he's not knowledgeable in what he teaches. You can ask him anything Math related and he will answer it and teach you beyond. This, I appreciated. Overall be prepared to be challenged and learn alot
Just don't do it to yourself, even if he is the only one teaching this class. Brags about how many people end up failing. It's almost guaranteed your GPA will drop unless you're Albert Einstein. Tests are impossible and over half the class ended up dropping. The average for the first exam was a 33%. If u wanna give it a go, you have been warned.
Does not lecture on the material. You will have to teach yourself Differential Equations. He uses class time to solve any problems that people have questions about, but does not actually explain the material. You are graded only on the 3 exams and the final. He requires a lot of Calc II and algebra knowledge.
I didn't like his method of "teaching" Introduction Statistics. He made us buy a course on Knewton Alta, which he may have made, but it was more like teaching ourselves. And the way Knewton Alta works is awful imo. He also didn't have hard deadlines, which I also didn't like because procrastination but that's bad on my part
He did not teach whatsoever. I haven't been to his class in a while because he does not teach, I have learned nothing from him. He hands out group work for you to work on with others while he either walks around or talks to students. You basically have to teach yourself, and I have not learned anything in this class. Uses Knewton Alta. It sucks.
I liked Curtis as a person, I thought he was a chill guy. His class kind of sucks though, basically everything is done on Knewton Alta which I think is universally disliked. It's difficult because of the amount of work on KA, but it is really easy to get an A if you complete all of it, which is due at the end of the semester, and show up to class.
I dropped and retook this class over summer with Jack Bennet at Ventura College where I earned a well-deserved A. Curtis doesn't teach well, rarely shows kindness, doesn't care for all his students, and expects them to find homework problems on their own to study. He also makes it unclear what material will be on the exams. Take Bennet instead.
If you looking for an easy pass this class is not it. I think only 3 or 4 people passed his class when I took it. If you have strong precalc skills and prior calc knowledge you might pass. Overall he's a nice layback dude and expects a lot from his students.
He's a nice guy, but he honestly doesn't really teach, he sorta just uses YouTube videos as his lectures and that's about it. I do like that there is no penalty for late work, but still make sure to not fall too behind.
Though I struggled with the class, I probably would not have made it if it weren't for Curtis. He is a lenient teacher (for stats) and is there to help you get your stats credit. As a poli sci major this was a huge help for me. The homework was terrible but he was fun to talk to in class. I would recommend this teacher.
Curtis is a very relaxed professor. For my class, he did not teach because everything was done on Knewton Alta, but if you did come to class (which did count for a grade) he was more than willing to go over concepts or questions if you didn't understand them. You have to be proactive in asking for help. Luckily, he is easy to approach.
It was a hybrid class, the prof is cool in general. Talk to him if you need help, but a lot of people fall behind because bro assigns like 10 assignments to do every week. If you keep up on them you're fine. Attendance was mandatory and graded, but the classwork he made us do was lowkey pointless. in class, he goes over only a few topics of the hw.
He tells you at the beginning of his stats class that it is easy to get an A as long as you do the work and don't fall behind. There is absolutely no penalty for late and all the work in online. Just go to class and do the online work, that's all you have to worry about. Dedicate some time to just sit down and blow thru all the hw and quizzes.
Professor is pretty chill, though the class can be tricky. Assignments are frequent, so staying on top of the work is key. Luckily, the professor is approachable and willing to help if you ask. I found unstuck AI super useful for practice and exam prep.
