AWESOME PROFESSOR :) Super easy, super nice, and super helpful. Alot of note taking...a little too much by the book, but an incredibly simple class. You don't really need to use the textbook except for right before an exam. He spoon feeds you during the class. For each exam, including the final..he gives you a copy of the test to study...SWEET! :)
Great prof. Clear. Helpful.
Helpful. Clear. Always tells class what to study for exams. Awesome.
Very GREAT professor! Easy class but you actually learn a lot. He gives out the exam in advance so there are no surprises. It's up to you to decide whether to study or not so you can't blame him for not doing well! I think in his class, you honestly have to try to get anything lower than a C! I highly recommend him!
Very helpful teacher. encourages questions and comments. Loves when class discussions get started by the students!! use of book was quite low but helpful during the short answer and essays tests. just pay attention and you'll do fine. he gives the test questions beforehand. RECOMMENDED!
Just recently obtained his doctorate or Ph.D, so he's quite new, so as with most new teachers, he is easy. He is terribly nice, and as others have said, literally gives out the test beforehand. Found the text (irony of democracy) online (this was after the final lol). I never had it the whole semester. Got a B and did't go to class half the time.
Great guy! He's still new and still improving his lectures more and more. 2 Tests + Final and 5PG Paper. He's cool and gives you what information on what to study for the exam, but you must read the book to understand what you are writing! There is quite alot of writing for exams so be prepared! Critical on key terms and spelling (he will dock u!)
Great teacher, very helpful. Likes to go on tangents but still manages to cover everything in class and makes the content very understandable.
Awesome friendly teacher, very helpful. Likes to go on tangents but still manages to cover everything in class and makes the content very understandable.
Like an older version of (McLovin) from Superbad. He's funny, helpful and understanding. However, he has high expectations. Know key terms, reading and know how to write because you will write alot! Very Critical on detail but manageable. This is a transfer course so expect to work hard. Take him only if you truly want to learn politics!
He gives you two Tests, Final and 5PG Paper. He gives you a study guide of what information to study for the test/ exam. Class is VERY boring............ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
This guy is a PHD graduate. Be prepared to give 110% and kiss your time good bye! You will spend all of your time studying just to pass. You can easily fail if you don't prepare! If you are an A student, take him! If you average below that, prepare to work very hard! Gives you study guides but don't expect to ease! Critical grader!
Absolutely amazing professor. Clearly enthusiastic about the material presented and well educated. If you're looking for a classroom to stare glassy-eyed into the yonder while mentally debating the meaning of the newest Miley single, do not take this class. If you genuinely want to learn politics from a man that clearly knows his****,then sign up.
Took his International Relations class and it was a pretty easy class. Be ready to write essays, make sure you attend class for handouts because they are what you build your essays on. He's funny and very helpful.
Definitely cannot be lazy in a class like this. Although this class is somewhat difficult, if you pay attention and attend class, you'll do fine. He's tries to make class interesting and makes some jokes, willing to help and explain. He knows what he's talking about and enjoys what he teaches.
you cannot do well in this class if youre going to slack off. you must pay attention and participation is 10 percent of your grade. the lectures are very easy to understand. before an exam he gives out study guides which are very helpful. he expects a lot from students and rewards good effort.
Great and funny guy. He's super nice. Almost too nice. Very helpful and very intelligent. All lecture, so take good notes. Tests are actually pretty demanding, however he gives you the questions a week ahead of time. There's one paper that he let's you pick the topic on.It' s a very nice complete class, without a lot of extra work.

I love this prof. He is clear, extremely helpful, encourages questions, goofy, and looks like McLovin from Superbad, just older. He gives you a copy of the exam to study over a week beforehand, which really helps me zero in on what points he wants me to remember after POLI9 is over. Come to class, listen, and participate, and you'll get an A.
Simon is a great teacher. He's crystal clear in his lessons and you'll learn a lot about how different countries interact with each other. he's also funny in a dorky way. kind of like McLovin.
Simon was a very good teacher. Although much of the class is taken from a dominantly Realist, Pro U.S. Imperialist perspective, he does offer alternative perspectives. He knows his history very well. Great sense of humor. Do your own personal research before you take his lectures as truth. He plays it very safe in not exposing U.S. Hypocrisy.
I had him for both POLI 2 and POLI 9. Attendance is mandatory and he's a good professor, but a very hard grader.
Super hard class if you don't do the work, if you attend class and try at least a little you'll pass. Simon is funny and sarcastic and I'm in love with him!
Awesome prof! I had another teacher before and she was terrible and failed me! so i hated poli sci! took Simon's class, it was easy and i actually learned alot! He gives you the Q for the exams and you get to take it home to prepare! MUST HAVE TeXTBOOK! He is super helpful. USE HIS OFFICE HOURS!!!
Great teacher tries to make a subject that isn't to interesting fun. Only down side is his grading 3 exams and one course paper so mainly one mess up and your screwed
This professor is Amazing. He tries his best to make a dry subject funny. An important note is that I looked forward to this class. Do the study guides and not getting an A is almost impossible. Definitely recommend this professor!!
I first time I took political science was with Mr. Trull and I faild with alot of other students in that class. when I retook the class with Curtis, I passed it and actually learned some interesting stuff about the topic. I would reccomend taking Curtis as your first choice for this class. he is helpful and is very patient with everyone.
Simon is everything that is right with the world. I'm taking him again next semester and I can't wait. Tests are all essay and if you've gone to class and listened, taken notes, a care at least a little, you'll get an A. Attendence isn't mandatory but necessary for a good grade. Also, he is Hi-lar-ious.
The professor is pretty easy to understand and easy to talk to. You need to attend all class sessions in order to do well on the exams, which are all essay exams. Participation required in the class so if you're not big on talking in class, don't take him.
You don't really have to read the textbook, but it helps to have read so that you have material to cover in the essays.
Read the textbooks, he bases the exams and quizzes on that. He covers a lot of information during lectures. Overall great teacher.
this guy is a joke! all he does is drink his water and make jokes. his exams are hard as hell he is the reason why i got a f on my transcript. bye bye Berkley
Curtis Simon is a great professor! Very helpful. No Homework, just 3 Exams and a 5 page Course Paper. The Exams are very tough, but I managed to CRAM the night before every exam and got an A so it's possible. The exams are essays and some questions that require memorization. Mostly lectures, and book is used a little bit to study for exams. TOUGH!
This class has 3 tests and 1 five page paper! So if u don't do well on 1 assignment kiss you A good-bye. Tests are hard. Teacher is a big nerd but he is funny and after a couple months he starts looking sexy...IF YOU ARE ALL ABOUT TAKING CHANCES IN LIFE TAKE HIM...
Writes little on the board and lectures for the entire class. fun teacher but since its pure lecture it can get a bit boring. no hw. 3 exams but they are all given to you a week before so you can prepare. one course paper. and remember to participate its an easy 5%. form study groups for exams it will def help.
He was an awesome professor everything was so easy I had previously withdrawn from a poli sci class and had got a D in another one I took Simon and Got A in all of my tests :)
Professor Simon is so funny, I love him! study a bit and keep up, then his class will be fun and enjoyable! took POLISCI as a first semester college student, and it went well (: he's like a cute PHD nerd, in a great way tho! def recommend.
He is a really hard teacher all he does in the class is talk all class long and you have to take notes on the important things he talks about basically his teaching method is not good we don't use the book at all in his class we have to go home and read it on our own all he does is talks from beginning to end u just loose the attention of his class
Prof. Simon is an awesome teacher, very easy going, and modest. He knows his subject and tries to communicate what he knows as clear as possible. He is funny, such a nerd :) but over the semester he starts looking sexy. Hes just awesome, love taking his class. Be present, participate and pay attention and you should land an A. Freaking love him!:)
Professor Simon is awesome! Very funny fellow and knows his stuff. Pay close attention and take good notes. He is also cute in a geeky way! Can get boring at times because its all lecture, but the key is to pay attention and try not to miss any classes because tests are based in his lectures. He won't disapoint!
The worst class I have ever taken. This is the type of class where the teacher is so boring that you don't wanna show up to class or you wanna hurt yourself when you do show up. He literally reads notes off of Wikipedia. So boring. I learned nothing from this guy. The material is so easy. I got an A. I don't recommend him!
Great professor. His lecture can be boring depending on the topic and your interest on that topic. Test are easy if you do the study guide. Attend class, do the study guide and you'll for sure pass.
Funny guy and good looking in an unconventional way. Very helpful and clear about the exams (3 total). Exams are based on class lectures with low emphasis on the reading. Participation is an easy 5% of the grade. Term paper is no big deal as long as you don't procrastinate. Highly recommend Prof. Simon.
He's fair grader, so you will get the grade you deserve. Just read the assigned chapters and study your notes. He is super helpful and gives great advice.
If you can take notes by ear rather than by copying from the board, this class should be no problem. Term paper and tests are no problem, if you read the assigned chapters. The professor is a cool guy in a sort-of geeky way. Make sure you double check and cite your sources correctly on the term essay.
Reading about International Relations on Wikipedia will save you time and money because this guy literally gets his lectures from there. Rambles too much. One of those classes you feel you're wasting your life in. Not recommended.
I highly recommend Professor Simon. He is an awesome professor. Helpful, funny and somehow makes the material interesting and easy to understand. 3 exams, which he gives you the questions to study a week before the exam; and 1 course paper. Other than that, just go to class, take notes and participate at least 5 times to get the 5% participation credit, but 2 of those are activities you do during the semester. Even if you're shy like me, you can do it.
Prof. Simon is a really great professor. He makes class interesting even when the material isn't. He encourages questioning set ideas and is very good at showing different perspectives. The exams are fairly easy and there's 1 course paper. Speak up at least 5 times to get the participation credit. I highly recommend taking him.
Curtis is by far the best PoliSci Professor you will ever have. He's incredibly knowledgeable on the subject and will look up anything and get back to you if there was something he didn't know. On top of this, Doctor Professor Curtis is as metal as they come. HE LITERALLY TAKES A POWER STANCE DURING THE ENTIRE LECTURE. Take his class if possible!
Prof. Simon's class is what college should be like. It's all discussion & lecture. He is not boring AT ALL. very enthusiastic and interesting lecture, I took POLISCI1 & 9 with him. 3 tests, 1 course paper. he is a fair grader, always so nice. just like real university work, no homework. he gives study guides for each exam. LOVE HIM!
He is very relaxed and always willing to answer any questions as well as assist you prior to the exam. Very laid back and his classes are never boring. His lectures are the best and very informative. I learned a lot in his class on various topics
He is very entertaining teacher who has a passion for what he is teaching. He teaches to educate students on politics not just trying to convince student to go with what he believes. I felt asleep in his class, but not because he is boring, but politics is boring to me. He has his own quirks that you will get used to. I recommend this professor
Professor Simon was a relatively easy professor. He provides study guides which are actually word-for-word questions on his tests, which consist of short answers and an essay question. You can easily pass using your notes/lecture, but reading the book also helps. He requires one essay, but assigns no homework.
Such a great professor! Very clear and helpful. Easy A if you study and read the book.
Great Professor ... 3 exams with study guide ... 1 paper
His class is pretty boring consisting mostly of lecture he reads word for word off his notes. Study guide questions are same to exam. All written exams no multiple choice. Memory is key. Only need 1 book and strongly suggested you do the readings as the exams based off that. 1 essay no homework. Book:irony of democracy 15th ed :) takes roll
Professor Simon is an excellent professor. He is very thorough and involved with lectures and students. He also has a good sense of humor and tries to make class as interrsting as possible. I would definitely take another class with him.
Curtis' lectures are interesting and engaging, he is extremely knowledgeable about his subject and his enthusiasm shines through. He has some interesting personality quirks and apologizes for his jokes too much. The tests (3 essays) are tough, and you need to know your stuff to get a good grade. Take good, complete notes; you *will* need them.
He's kind, funny, and approachable. Makes the classroom environment comfortable. Participation is 5% of grade but, very easy to get those points even for quiet, timid students. Tests given a week before to write out essay and short answers, so the key to a good grade is memorization and familiarity with the lectures and textbook.
As a political science major professor Simon was exactly what I needed. He is extremely kind and helpful and very passionate about what he is teaching. His exams are a bit tough, but he is very willing to help and will give great feedback. Use the material out of the book and it can bring you from a B to an A. I extremely recommend taking his class
He's quirky, awkwardly funny, always wears shorts, passionate and gives good lecture. I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot about political science. He gives the exam questions a week prior to the test, which makes the class so much easier. Just do the study guide and it will be an easy A. Highly recommended!
Love professor Simon! He's ALWAYS lively and friendly to all of his students. I thought he was easy because I'm good with the subject and his lecture notes are quite clear to follow. Beware: he gives full essay exams, so if you're not good with those, I'd be wary. Don't let this scare you because he's honestly the kindest professor I've had!
Simon made me change my major to poll sci! He is perfect! No homeworks, just one paper for the whole semester. 3 essay exams that were easy if you actually did some work. That's it! He gives you the prompts a week before the exam! Extremely helpful. His lectures are very interesting and he actually knows his stuff. Great professor! Taking him again
Curtis is the man! The guy is a crack up but also a very informative professor. Much love for the man. He cares about the students and he will always make time for you. Definitely a guy who loves teaching.
He really is into this field of politics and i liked that about him because hes inspiring. i mean i already liked international relations but now that i know the fundamentals of viewing the world iti really like it.
His lectures are very long, however, he gives you the essay questions a week prior and if you go to his office hours he will be there to guide you. 3 essay questions including the final, participate in class to get to full 5% credit.
He makes a lot of jokes so he keeps you entertain. But, he is also knowledgeable in his field. He cares about his students, you can tell he loves teaching. I would recommend him to anyone, unless your really bad at essays. His test are all essays but as long as you answer the question you will be find and cite the book: i say 7+ citations per parag
Professor Simon is one of the best professors I have taken at Mt. SAC. His passion for the subject inspired me to change my major to poli sci. He is hilarious! Be ready to participate in class, its important that you do so. His exams are all essay exam there is only 3 and if you pay attention in class and read. He's awesome.
If you are someone with independent views, and a critical thinker you will get a B in this class. If you are very vocal about your liberal views, and write bullet point essays chances are you will get an A. Students that can elaborate in more detail didn't do well in his class because he rewards on memorization not articulation.
Professor Simon is genuinely invested in the well-being of his students. While some of the material may seem dull and even monotonous, Professor Simon always manages to make his students laugh. He also respects each and every view that is openly shared in class. If you listen and participate actively, the class should be fair. :)
Professor Simon is a great ,enthusiastic teacher . The main problem I had with this class was falling behind on the reading .If you're not into history like me, then I would recommend taking a different class because I found the book very hard ,boring to read.
Professor Simon is one of the best professors I've had at Mt. Sac. He has a way of teaching where students actually learn from him. I have never liked political science, in fact I failed my first political science class with a different professor because the class was very difficult and I couldn't understand a thing he said. Take Prof. Curtis!
Professor Simon was a good teacher however his lesson plan favored lengthy lectures rather than classroom participation which made the class a bit dull. This class also only has three tests which are in class essays pertaining to questions given a week prior. Overall an easy class if you just need to finish a general ed.
I have had Professor Simon for Poli1,2, and 9 and he is the best professor I ever had. He has 3 in-class essay and that is it. He even gives you the question a week before so you know what to study. He is pretty fun and his class are so enjoyable.
I had Professor Simon for Poli 2 and I really enjoyed his class and teaching style. The tests are all essay and require you to read to pass because he wants a lot cited from the book. His class is very lecture heavy and you get participation points for asking questions but honestly he keeps it very interesting. I'd def take again.
Super fun and interesting lectures. Cracks jokes 24/7. Essay exams that he gives you a week before to prep and practice what to write. Make sure to quote material from books to help get better grade.
really good teacher. If you put in the effort you should easily pass with an A
Prof. Simon is very funny and very intelligent. Even if the material is dry every so often, his humor and energy make it interesting. I really enjoy this topic, but he is definitely a tough grader. You have to meet specific criteria on the essay tests and even then, points can be docked. As long as you study and run your ideas past him, you're good
Great professor. Not intimidating, humble. Lectures clearly, and is organized. Reading is a must or at least I needed to because it helps when you need support for your exams. I had a bad experience with another poli professor and then I took Curtis Simon and I've appreciated well organized professors ever since. Also has a sense of humor.
He's a cool guy, funny sometimes. Your entire grade is just 3 tests and a really small easily done paper. (So easy that I forgot to do it and so I did it in class the day it was due and I got a 95% on it) but the tests are crazy. You need to write a solid essay with a lot of evidence from the textbook. Even with a lot of evidence I got B's.
Curtis Simon was a very humble and approachable professor. He is always open to any questions or comments a student may have. He is always available during office hours for extra help. His lectures are very long and can be tedious to listen to. His exams are always straightforward and there is no reason not to be prepared for them.
smartest poli sci prof, was scared to take him but he is so nice & funny! he does grade okay (3 essays) but if you quote from the mandatory textbook a few times then you have nothing to be afraid about. he gives you 1-2 weeks to prepare for the essay so you don't have any reason to not be ready for it. pre write your essays and memorize them (A)
Curtis is a good professor and is entertaining. Attendance is necessary because a lot of the exam questions come from class lecture. Reading isn't really necessary but it's highly recommended. He's a great professor who will work with you if you give him the chance. He's funny and the class was really interesting.
Love the way he does his exams! He makes sure you know what you're writing about when he's grading. He's an amazing lecturer! Hilarious, literally makes me laugh my ass off each lecture. Take him!
his a really good, he has a good and goofy personality in class. Be aware lectures the whole entire time, he only writes down a little bit of notes on the board since he says he says the notes out loud. He speaks fast at times since he has a lot to cover during class. Only has 4 exams including the final. lesson plans are interesting
great professor, 4 exams including the final which are all hand written and no you can not use a flash card so you have memorize all of the materiel need on the exam, good thing is he gives you the prompt a week ahead or so. Only reads the notes out loud sometimes writes a little on the white board. You have to purchase 2 textbooks.
Professor Simon can be very funny at times, almost reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld. His lettuce's are very dry, 3 major essays which you must quote from your book and give detailed examples. I found you could miss class, but you will get lost.
The course is a combination of world history (first 5 weeks) and IR theory (rest of semester). Lectures are long, but he's hilarious. Exams are in-class essays, and he'll provide you with the prompt about a week before. Here's some advice I can't stress enough: INCLUDE INFO FROM THE READINGS IN YOUR EXAMS!Cite the book at least 5-7 times per exam.
simon is a great professor! really makes lectures engaging and funny. he is quirky with an odd sense of humor but he is great. most exams are written essay. can grade difficult so incorporate examples into the essays!!! and do the study guides. overall i would take again
Simon has so much energy and so much knowledge to share. He is a great professor and he makes some hilarious jokes. All jokes aside his class is no joke. You better show up take notes, read the book and be able to write. You want that A you have to earn it you can not get an A in the class if you do not mention the book in your essays.
Professor Simon is GREAT. It's very important to show up every class meeting and to read. He gives out the study guide a week or even more before the test and whatever is in the study guide comes on the test. He is very hilarious and has so much to say... By all means, take his classes
He is very funny and super corky. Although his classes are ALL lectures and he has no PowerPoint to follow. He keeps you entertained though. His tests are all written except the final. His tests are very hard and he rarely gives out As. I had a 4.0 until I got a B in his class. He is a super nice guy and loves participation.
Professor Simon is one of the best professors I've ever had. He keeps lectures moving at a good pace and genuinely cares about his students. Be ready to participate, because it counts as part of your grade! The exams consist of short answers and essays - as long as you do the reading and take good notes in lecture, you'll be fine. Take his class!
Professor Curtis is one of the best professors I've ever had. His class consists of 3 exams, all essays. To do well, you need to quote form the book. If your writing is weak, then it may be a bit difficult for you. You have to memorize all the info, but if you start right away, then it will be easy. His lectures were very engaging. And no HW.
Professor Simon is an outstanding teacher, really funny and interesting lectures throughout his class. There are 3 essay styled tests (He gives the prompt a week before so you can prepare), study from the lecture notes AND from the textbook and the A is yours. Easy class, doesn't assign any homework, just study and attend the lectures!
3 written exams, writing assignment, participation pts (required to speak 5x) Lecturesincredibly dry and I found it hard to stay awake. provides a study guide week before the exam to help you prep. He is pretty accessible and responds to emails fairly quickly. Prof. moderately funny and tolerable. Make sure to include quotes from txtbook min. 10X
Curtis really made me a better person and a student with new perspective. He is such a great professor and cares for his students! For the tests, read the book and quote at least 8 times for an A. The final is super easy! If you need help, he emails back very promptly and office hours he'll be there. Interested in poli sci? TAKE HIM!!
He is one of the best professors I've had. He is a very unique professor, he loves to joke around and very passionate about politics. he gives three exams which are in class essay. he gives the prompt a week before so you can memorize your essay. if you refer to the book in the essay and participate 5 times in class you will get an A. Take him!
POLI9 is harder than POLI1. The professor is funny and is well-rounded in his subject. There are two exams and one final (all worth 30% of total grade). I struggled a lot in this class bc I didn't know what to write. Managed to jump from average B to A at the end from hard work. REMINDER: READ AND CITE A LOT FROM TEXTBOOK (AT LEAST 7-10times).
Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Took him for int. relations and comp. pol. and I wish he had more classes in other subjects. Don't take his class if you expect an easy "A". There wasn't a single day where I didn't get a good dose of laughter.
Prof. Simon is a super nice & funny guy. Make sure to go to class, he lectures with no PowerPoint so taking notes is essential. The exams are straightforward, all in-class essays and he gives you the prompt plenty of time beforehand. You must refer to the material you read from the textbook if you want an A on the essay! Participation counts too!
This class wasnt a political science class, it was more of a history class. He lectures extremely heavy, speaking extremely fast and he jumps from one subject to another back to the other and then to another. His tests are in class 10 page essays. He takes attendance every day and they count as participation points.
Honestly the best professor Ive ever had. This isnt even my major and its my favorite class ever. Although his exams are essays and theres only one other assignment, he will definitely give you everything to be prepared and engaged in the context. I thought I hated political science but now Im thinking of changing my major to it because of him
Its not an easy A. You have to work for it, but if you are in his class to learn, and want to be challenged then this class is for you. Attending class is important, exams are essays in class which you can prepare for a week before. one of the Most organized professor i've seen. Take him if you want to learn. He is hilarious!!
Nice guy and funny but the lectures can be kind of boring unless youre interested in this kinda stuff. No homework except for studying for exams. Exams are essays but you get the prompt a week before. If you arent good at writing this teacher is not a good pick for you. Its not an easy A. You need the book. Participation is 5% of final grade.
Took him for both Poli 2 and 9. The reviews sound like a broken record at this point and I'm going to contribute to that by remarking he is indeed funny, energetic, and using the textbook is an unsaid requirement for getting an A or B.
Curtis is a great professor. He breaks down everything to every detail. That could be a good thing but sometimes we only get stuck on one thing for the whole class that sometimes it feels like you didnt learn anything. If you are an audio learner go to him. No visuals, just notes and speaking. His lessons are interesting and no class work or Hw
Dont let his quirks or lectures scare you because you will walk out of his class as either an improved student or dissatisfied. Grade is based off 3 exam style essays that require textbook references and lecture material. He gives you an exam study guide a week ahead. Altho his class isnt easy, YOU WILL work and learn to get that A.
I swear one of the funniest teachers Ive ever had, by far the funniest professor Ive had... but hes no slouch, he expects to best out of papers, and nothing less than the best will fly. 100% recommend taking his classes!!!
He is a real gem in poli sci dept. very sarcastic and friendly. learned so much from his class. he isnt as hard as others say! It can be a bit challenging sometimes. But take notes, do the reading, fully engage in class, and write an outline and have him check for you before exam. You'll get an A!
I love professor Simon. I had him for POLI9 during the fall of 2019 but ended up having to retake it. He really cares for his students and is so funny. I retook his class during spring of 2020 and passed with an A. It took a lot of work but it is very manageable. Good Luck
He will lecture and you will take notes then you will have 2 written exams. The exams are simple if you take good notes and look over them.
Killed my 4.0. I took two of his classes and he gave me Bs on both. 90% of your grade is based upon 3 Essays. Hes very general on what hes asking for and expects perfection. He wants you to basically repeat the lectures to him in an essay format. I learned a lot in his class, but his grading style is unreasonable.
I received two A's in both CP and IR. The exams (3) are solely based on the lectures (use it for analyzing) . Quotes from the book are necessary to prove a point (read assigned chapters of the topic and get quotes like 7-8). Get the papers check by the writing center. (he is big on proofreading). He'll give the prompt 10 days before the due date.
I love him! Every week, we had 2 50+ min prerecorded informative lectures. Textbook was required for quotes to use in exam, and not homework was given. Required to answer 10 out of 30 discussion boards for full participation points. 3 exams, all written. Prompt was given a week in advance. Professor would answer emails quick. Very funny professor.
He was the worst professor I've ever encountered. I took his class because of good feedback but he sucks at online class and I would never recommend this professor. He gave a videoclip as a lecture and we never learned anything from it.
I did not learn anything from him. Worst professor I've ever encountered.
the best POLI Professor Ive had. His lectures are essential to passing the class and doing well on his exams. This is class is extremely lecture heavy and sometimes its a lot of information to take in with just one lecture. If you put in the effort, take notes, and watch all his lectures, you can do very well in his class.
Do not take his class online. The class consists of 3 hour long lectures a week, that were all recorded back in April 2020. 90% of grade is essays, and his guidelines are not specific, but his grading is. I wrote a 7 page paper following his short guidelines to a T, and I got a 65% on the paper. He constantly brags about how hard his class is.
I took him for spring, there were 3 lecture recordings to watch each week that were an hour long each. He lets you only do 5 discussion boards out of the whole semester which is cool, and there is no other homework/test besides 3 essays the whole class. Be sure to watch his lectures because you won't be able to do the essays without watching them!
So I had Professor Simon's International relations class and as a teacher, he was great! His lectures were very neat and informative, he was very helpful through Gmail, and he seems like a funny dude. One small problem I had (which might be normal for college idk) was the lack of instructions for essay formats but besides that he is a great teacher
Professor Simon was my favorite instructor at mt sac. He made me love learning and being a student. He listens and cares about his students. He is a great man. I have lots of respect for him. Just put in the work expected of you and you will do amazing.
This guy grades strict. Also he was about to give me a big fat F on a paper but only got lucky because it was a military related reason but still dinged me some points. Passed average C+ and I applied my self. Boring lectures and rambles.
The instruction is super unclear, and the whole grading system is immature.
Professor Simon is such a passionate guy! Taking good lecture notes will for sure help you pass the class! In my personal opinion he is very funny and cares about his students. No quizzes in this class, only about 3 big essays. He is a very tough grader though so make sure your writing skills are good because you write about what you learned.
By far THE best teacher I have ever had, especially if your looking for a good teacher for kind of a difficult subject like this, stop looking and choose Curtis Simon. he cares about your success in that class. Participation definitely matters. He actually provides a study guide for the tests and will clarify the questions in class to!
I dropped out of his class right when I heard that none of his assignments will be online. His whole grading system is really immature and childish honestly. Dont take this class if you prefer your work to be online instead of paper
He is super charismatic, cares about his subject and students, and wants you to succeed. Lectures are always funny and entertaining while getting the information out to you. You have to show up to lectures and participate to succeed in is his class, though, but definitely the best professor for political science.
Would not recommend this professor, he only has 4 exams which can be difficult for those who prefer doing some homework as a form of studying. His exam prompts are difficult to understand, his lectures are difficult to understand, he tends to go off on tangents in which a majority of the info will not be used during an exam. Do not recommend.
His Poli1 is a waste of time. He did nothing but drone on for 8 weeks of boring lecture, then hit us with an in-class essay as a midterm, which he graded in his own context without explanation, mercy, a rubric, or grading scale. He then failed 1/3 of the class from their essays and suggested we drop the class and try again next semester.
Professor Simon is amazing! He's lecture heavy but at least he's not boring. He manages to make an otherwise difficult and tedious subject entertaining. You are graded on three exams and the instructions may seem overwhelming, but he gives you a study guide to ensure that you succeed in his class. Pay attention and take notes! You'll do just fine
Lectures are great.
Amazing guy and I personally loved his lectures. Does exams in essay formats but gives you the exam questions a week in advance so you have plenty of time to prepare. Lectures are long and fill up the entire class time but are very detailed so get ready to take lots of notes. Awesome guy and great professor!
What bothers me is that he's easy to pass, but impossible to get an A if that's your goal. His friendly demeanor and good lectures aren't the problem. It's that his grading criteria IS NOT CLEAR. His exam study guide gives you a lot of stuff to prepare and do good, yet ambiguous enough to be impossible for a person that want's the best grade.
Clearly informs students what is needed to pass the class. Fairly easy but you have to attend every lecture to prevent failing behind.
This class was so much fun and I'm taking his Poli 9 class next. The class is defiantly very lecture heavy and you HAVE to attend the lectures but he makes them entertaining so you don't get bored. He is a very tough grader but as long as you show that you understand the topics you will pass with at least a B no problem.
Class is really boring and he sort of rambles the entire time. Personally, I didn't like his style of teaching and he doesn't use canvas which I also didn't like. If you like taking tons of notes then he would be good for you but if you don't then I'd suggest staying away from him.
No online work. Your grade is souly based off of the test you take and if you fail it, you fail the whole class. Instructions for test don't line up with what he wants on the test. Told me to drop the class and I just wasted my time in that class so now I can't even get a refund for the class. Don't take you'll just waste your time.
Professor Simon is amazing, long lectures but he makes them manageable to get through, test are all handwritten but they are not too hard as long as you come to class, pay attention and take notes. Try not to miss class often. He is also very kind to everyone and treats everyone with respect. Has a strict no phone policy in his class.
tests are all handwritten (essay style) and make up 90% of the whole grade which i didn't particularly enjoy. he grades tests pretty tough; i passed fairly easily, but it seemed pretty hard to get an A. he's funny and nice but i didn't like his style of teaching/grading very much.
Prof. Simon is the best professor ever! Take him if you really want to learn! He is a tough grader, is heavy on writing, but helps you to the max and is SUPER fast at replying emails. His lectures are NEVER boring, definitely get a laugh and lots of learning during his lectures. Gives study guides 1 week ahead of exams, 2 weeks for final. TAKE HIM!
such a sweet guy! took him for poli 9 in the fall, and took poli 2 this spring. attendance is mandatory, and he's an extremely tough grader, but he's super accessible after class if you have any questions. exams are high stakes, & worth 75% of grade. as a poli sci major, i learned lots! but i will definitely have nightmares about those exams...
Professor Simon is an incredible instructor. He knows what he's talking about and he is extremely knowledgeable at what he teaches. He responds to emails quickly. He is very helpful and passionate. The class is tough because it's 3 exams all essay, but I would say that he is a pretty fair grader and will help you if you need it.
He is the sweeter teacher I know so far, It feel like a caring dad is teaching me with a lot of patience. He makes his class so investing. So passionate about his profession. Participation is mandatory if you want full credits but I promise he give a lot of opportunities. You can just tell him to repeat that agin and that counts like participation
Professor Simon is a great professor who shows his passion in every lecture.
Attendance is mandatory, if you're absent 5 times then you'll get dropped and if you're late 30 minutes it counts as an absence. He's a great person but goes off-topic every few minutes and starts to ramble about random things while giving lectures. If you want to take his class make sure to bring a laptop to self-study.
Curtis Simon is a great professor that all Political Science students at Mt. SAC are acutely familiar with. All across the board, his lectures and course content are great. Make sure you show up, make sure you take good notes, and really study for those exams - he's forgiving in that he assigns no busywork, but you have to show up ready for exams.
His class is very lecture heavy. Does not require a textbook. 3 major essays. He is an excellent professor. I highly recommend him if you enjoy learning. If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT the class for you. You HAVE to do the work in order to get the grade, but he gives you all the information you could need. Pay attention!!!!
Professor Simon is a great professor, especially for POLI Sci or related majors. He is very lecture heavy, a textbook is NOT required to be purchased, but if you are aiming for an A, it's extremely encouraged to have one. Participation counts as a grade, but you only need to a few times on your own accord. Writing-oriented course, so be prepared.
Took Poli 9 with Professor Simon last semester. As a STEM major, I thought PoliSci would not be my thing. Prof Simon really made the class intriguing for me! I went to every lecture, and there was never a moment where I lost engagement. If you want an A, utilize the textbooks and work hard on his 3 essay tests. One of the kindest prof I know :)
Prof Curtis is a great professor! Tbh I would take all Poli classes with him. He is very fair, understanding and gives you ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING you need to get an A for the course. But you actually have to study and read to pass. All exams are essays, no quizzes and homework
Professor Simon was amazing. He doesn't use canvas and only gives a couple assignments. Your grade is pretty much based on 3 exams and participation. You have to participate 5 times to get credit but he gives many easy opportunities to do this. His class is almost entirely lectures but he is very understanding and helpful. I recommend taking this!
When it comes to general ed Professor Simon is by far the best professor I have taken. His lectures are very interesting and entertaining and he grades leniently on exams. The class is made up of 3 exams and one writing assignment and thats it. if you take good notes and attend all lectures you are guaranteed at least a B!
Professor Simon's class is lecture-heavy, but engaging if you're willing to actively participate. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy and the free textbook very helpful. Grading is mainly based on exams and attendance.
Prof Curtis is a really nice professor. His lectures were my favorite part of the whole semester. The only thing I didn't like is that the grade is based on 3 exams overall. No really an opp for an extra credit or somthing.
Professor Simon is very passionate about this topic. There is no homework; you just need to prepare for the essay exams. Some participation points are given during lectures besides mandatory roll call.
Not as tough at first but you will realize after taking the first exam how unreasonable his grading system is. There is no set criteria, no explanation on how he grades. It seems like he grades based on how he feels. He is also one of those "I don't believe in As" teacher and thinks a B is an amazing job. If you're looking for an A, not for you.
There are 3 tests essays that you need to complete within the class, and 1 small/easy paper. You definitely have to work for the grade, and the way he grades, if you want an A on the essay tests, you need to cite from the book, but you can go by with a B without it as long as you pay attention to lectures. He is a nice guy, but can be a bit boring.
Prof. Simon is a great guy, hilarious in lectures (though heavy on review), and he cares for his students. There are 3 essays, each worth 30% of your grade. He is NOT clear with the criteria, there is no rubric, and there isn't really any feedback on how to make a good essay. He teaches the material well, but the essays are a little insane.
Focus on exams, very entertaining, almost theatrical. You can joke around with him np. Hard to get an A, idk y hes suffice with his avg grade of B. "Most people end up with Bs rather than A's,Cs,Ds at the end of semester"-Curtis. This is true, in short the class consist of listening to his lectures & written exams to prove you were listening.
Winston Churchill
Curtis's International Relations class is not that hard. Make sure to stay on top of the readings (which really aren't that much), pay attention in class, and take decent notes. Great lecturer, highly entertaining/funny, and really great guy overall.
Read or skim the textbook, do some practice test for exams, pay attention in class, and make sure to stay on top of the readings. Great lecturer, really nice guy. Comparative is quite a bit harder than the typical social science class, but it's manageable, and not too bad.
Although we are only graded by like three things, the course itself is easy to navigate, and attaining an A will come almost naturally if you simply care about the class enough to make it a priority. 2 books are required, and all of the content is amazingly presented! Definitely take Simon if you want a good comparative experience!!
Best professor ever. He's strict in some aspects but he is very very very very understanding and really funny. I called him Master Simon. He kept me engaged and gave amazing feedback on exams. It was a very straight forward class which made it not complicated or anything you know what's going to go down which made it easy! also Winston Churchill
pretty chill dude not gonna lie
Professor Simon is easy to get along with and likes to tell jokes. His lectures can be inspiring at one point, and then they get more involved. I enjoyed going to his lectures. He really wants students to be more informed about what is going on in politics today. He gives extra credit and provides study guides for exams, so that's a plus.
Prof. Simon was such a great professor. His information was straight forward and his study guides really helped and translated towards the few exams we did have. He is a funny teacher and really wants us to get involved. I would take it again.
I love professor simon. He is so hilarious and passionate about his work. The class is graded on three essay exams and participation! The essays are straightforward and manageable as long as you pay attention to the lectures and utilize the textbook. This was my favorite class this year! and no homework ever!
I've had to take Professor Simon twice, failing the first time I took his class. Professor Simon himself is extremely caring and understanding. Now as for the lecture, YOU MUST utilize your notes into the long essay exams, sometimes lecture can get side tracked by comments he takes from students. You have to work really hard in this class!
Simon is an alright professor and is clearly passionate, however, he takes the quite difficult route (on the student) of having no more than four assignments total, 3 exams, one small paper. There is no room for messing up here. Take vigorous notes and read the textbook. You can pass if you study well. It was a little much for me, but he's okay.
Taken Simon for both Poli2&9 all i can say that his classes are very memorable. you can tell he cares and if you pay attention in his class the exams are like a walk in the park. textbooks are essential if you want to receive an A or high B in the class and he doesn't use canvas but because there's very few assignments (
Professor Simon is VERY knowledgeable and cares about his students. Attendance is mandatory, tests are based on the lectures to receive a B in the class, and if you read and cite the book, you can easily get an A on the 3 handwritten essays. He writes most of the information on the board; all you need to do is take good notes. A must-take professor
