He is a nice guy. You are required to complete some academic journal responses and two paper for the midterm and the final. Weekly quizzes can be found online and the exams are based on quizzes and textbook.
Professor thinks hes the best sociologist out there and comments about it all the time. makes you write 4 academic articles that he grades relatively rough. 4 tests, weekly quizzes, and then 2 five-paged papers. tests are also annoying bc they pull specific names from the book.
You are taking Curtis for Sociology? Dropout NOW. He literally is an unnecessary pain. He gives too much UNNECESSARY work and doesn't even read/grades them correctly. DONT EVER TAKE HIS SERVICE LEARNING OPTION. NOT WORTH IT. HIS CLASS? NOT WORTH IT. You're better off reading sociology online and learning more.
easy class, just alot of work. should be easy to get As on his exam and online quizzes . first academic journal was hard but follow his feedback and you get better scores. the paper just has to be 5 pages and apa format. service learning was alot of work with 8 page essay but as long as u do it, its a 4.0.
Each week you have an online quiz but you can google the answers. Usually tosses in 1 extra question from lecture (Not online). Great documentary on crime. Tests are 50 MC, with most Q's coming directly from the quizes. Two 5 Page papers, 4 short journal responses. Everything is 20% of your grade, so its really easy to get 4.0. Finished w/ 98
Very easy class. You have 4 tests which are based off weekly online quizzes, two 5 page papers, and 4 academic journal articles. Seems like a lot but it really isn't compared to some of the other classes we have to take here.
He is one of the most arrogant people I have ever met. Got a bad grade on my midterm paper because he didn't like my stance on the topic because it conflicted with his PERSONAL VIEWS. Completely inflicts his own socialist views on you and takes it out on your grade when you disagree. Would not take unless you want to be a suck-up all semester.
One of the smartest professors at all of Bentley. Knows everything there is to know about sociology and really cares about his students. Loves digging deep into course concepts and getting the entire class involved. A must take for SO132.
Super intelligent man, he really earned his p.H.D in Sociology. He always brings in his advantageous insight from his upper-level sociology class, Sociology at the edge. Easy quizzes (online/google answers), easy tests. Every other choice except Dr. Smith is a wrong choice.
Makes sociology harder for you even though it's a gen ed class. Easy tests and quizzes however the 2 five page research papers and academic journals are a pain in the ass. He grades them very harshly too. You'll get an A if you put in the work but if not there are other easier profs for Sociology that you can take.
He seems tough-ish in the beginning, but he doesn't take attendance and it's really easy to get a minimum of 3.3 if you put in the work for the journals and the essays. It's honestly not that hard, I barely pay attention in class and I've done pretty well so far
Professor Smith is a good professor. Expect weekly homework and to go over articles each and every class. Long lectures that talk about bad presents and bad futures. Not an uplifting class by any means. Probably better sociology classes out there as this one is pretty borning. Tests are pretty easy. Service-learning embedded so just 3 credits
Is super rude and doesn't care about his students. He will answer emails in one word with no context andif you ask him a questions he will respond come to office hours but he wont actually be at his own office hours. will never get to know your name even at such a small school. overall like 2/10 for personability and caring for his students.
He is a great and nice person.
He makes my day brighter in every aspect of the sense. His in class actions are what really make him so amazing. He is not scared to have fun with his lessons. Professor Smith comes to class every day as both a teacher and an entertainer. If I have any advice its that I wish he did even more "shocking/funny" displays to keep us engaged!
I love this man. Hands down the best teacher on the face of the planet. Not only is he extremely entertaining, but he's hilarious! I love when he does spontaneous experiments to stir up the class and spark a reaction. I'm telling you, if you get the chance take Dr. Smith. Only thing I wish he did was be more spontaneous! Thank you Dr. Smith.
Do you want to take the best class ever with the best professor ever? Then take Professor Smith. It's that simple.
I truly believe Professor Smith cares about all of his students. He knows everyone's name! He is an awesome teacher and gives you a lot of time to do assignments. His classes are definitely not boring. You will look forward to going and hearing the genius he spreads every day in class. He is a boss!
To everyone saying Professor Smith doesn't care about his students, how dare you? You probably skipped all his classes or didn't share your sociological thoughts during think, pair, share. To the people considering taking Professor Smith. Do it. He is a genius when it comes to sociology, and even better, he is cool! Gives homework but not too much.
There's no other way to describe Dr. Smith other than out of this world. I never thought I would want to study Sociology, but Dr. Smith makes it my favorite class. Take Dr. Smith!!
Although I gave him a 1 level of difficulty, that does not mean you can show up to class and not engage. Professor Smith makes sure everyone gets involved and he really is an awesome teacher. Would definitely take again.
Fair grader. Doesn't always take attendance. Good guy. Really interesting course.
One of my first sociology courses. Wasn't sure how I really felt on the subject. Dr. Smith was very fun and interesting. Might consider taking a minor in sociology.
Really smart guy. Probably one of the more fair sociology teachers.
Would take again.
Really good with technology! Super entertaining. Not a lot of homework. Would take again.
I love him. Let me repeat that. This class made me love him.
Curtis Smith is the best teacher I've ever taken. I truly mean that. Please take him if you get the chance.
No excuse to get lower than a 3.7.... he makes it easy for the students and puts minimal stress you. Guy is passionate about what he teaches and wants students to do well.
Something about this professor just gets on my nerves. He constantly says he gets high reviews of appraisal but I do not see them anywhere. Quiz every week which is easy and exam is basically just a giant quiz from past 3 quizzes. Some research papers, not too hard just an annoying professor.
The class itself was really easy - online quizzes that had most of the answers online, 2 papers, some academic journal summary things and exams that were literally all of the quiz questions put together. He was a fairly easy grader, but at the same time would take off a good amount of points for weird things like formatting in citations. Easy 4.0.
Capitalist beware. He loves to talk about how unbiased he is and how he accepts all views. However as you progress later into the course the ideas of communism and socialism will be shoved down ur throat. Leftist ideologies will be taught as "fact" and you can either agree or receive a poor grade. He even said don't state your opinion on the matter
Not a bad professor but there are some problems with his class. Not nearly as unbiased as he claims he is, although I am not sure that he realizes that. A lot of the topics we talk about are negative and he never seems to have anything good to say about the world. Class is easy though, which is good. Exams aren't bad and the papers are fairly easy.
Great professor and person. Weekly quizzes were easy and he reuses almost all of the questions for his tests. He can be a tough grader on the papers but if u follow everything on the rubric ur fine, pretty easy A and interesting class. He plays a documentary for 2 classes & didnt give a final. Tests are on lockdown browser so study the quizzes
For so132 class doesnt really matter as much as the assignments. He has a very clear structure. Weekly learning modules that are Very easy to do, reply to another person for each discussion board. Midterm and Final papers are 5 pages and time consuming but that was the only hard part. Would recommend, low effort class, good time, would take again.
Nice guy and an easy grader. But his lecture is totally a nightmare, goes on and on and if you don't have a great knowledge background, you will not understand what he talks. Weekly modules are a nightmare and extremely long, and you never have a clear understanding of his lecture. But easy grader and two paper in one semester. HARD exams and quiz
Ive found this class to be very interesting. Im taking it online right now and we have weekly modules that are basically just video lectures. Classes are used for discussions on those modules. If you havent completed the module before class then sometimes hell play them in class. Overall good quality professor
Professor Smith is a shining example of what a good professor should be. His class is no cakewalk, but it's also not extremely difficult. It has the right balance. It is very scheduled, and he makes sure that nothing comes out of the blue. If you get into a good routine, the class is pretty straightforward and very informative. Cole Duval
Easy class to take in order to fulfill your general education requirements. The content was interesting and took a lot out of it. Quizzes every week which were easy to do.
Really great professor. Knows how to balance having fun and being educational. Also for Zoom, does a really good job with putting students into break out rooms and allowing for more comfortable conversation in there, for those who get nervous speaking in front of the class.
Dr. Smith is one of the greatest professors at Bentley. His courses are centered around LEARNING. The work load is not bad, even to incoming freshman who may have never had a college-semester's worth of work. In specific, SO 221 is an incredible course if you are interested in truly understanding homelessness. TLDR; take Dr. Smith's courses.
Professor Smith is the worst lecturer I've ever had. The opposite of eloquent, he stumbles through so much and most of the time he only explains half the material on his slides. When he occasionally goes off on a tangent about something, you are left even more confused than before. He is also terrible about answering emails.
Professor Smith is passionate about and appears very knowledgeable of the subject, however his teaching rarely conveys this. Students learn material through modules outside of class. These videos were extensive to the point of being pretty painful, as he would either stumble upon the teachings or go on tangents to the point where you're left lost.
One of the worst classes and professors I've had. I'm not paying thousands of dollars in tuition fees to spend hours outside of class watching confusing videos to teach myself. Will take off points on exams for things that you mentioned in your responses and then take forever to get back to you when you email him. Not a good choice for this class.
Really understanding during COVID and provided the class with a lot of valuable information. Easy A, and you also learn a lot.
Basically Professor Smith teaches everything through modules or video recordings. Zoom attendance is not mandatory. Then he has discussion posts for each video in which you have to answer and respond to someone. There are two papers, a midterm, and a final. The midterm & final are just questions on topics from the modules and are fairly easy.
This class was run online but all of the work was outside of class work. It is very lecture heavy, with learning modules due at the end of each week. If it is online, be prepared to do roughly 3 hours of work (but for the whole week) which really isn't all that bad. Fairly easy grader but you have to work for the good grade.
I enjoyed the content of the class but am not a fan of Prof Smith. I showed up to class, paid attention, and participated at yet he doesn't even know my name or most of the names of my classmates. He wouldn't tell us what would be on the midterm and it's all essay-based. Uses students for his research but didn't even try to learn names. Red flag.
Had many good reviews so I decided to take him. Going to classes is pointless, it is just prerecorded lectures that he stops and emphasises his own points in his lectures. There are also models you have to do every week which are low key a lot of work. Plus there are several papers involved. Easy grader and easy quizzes but sucks at communcation.
Awful class. Every week he posts a module which consists of prerecorded lectures of himself talking. Posts discussion posts for every video. Online quiz at end of the week. if you go to class in person, he pauses the video to say one word, otherwise just stands there and watches his own videos. Very easy A class if you do the modules and posts.
If you want to do busy work every day take him, if not STAY AWAY!!!! This man has the most homework and busywork I have ever seen. On top of the weekly modules, there are 4 academic responses, weekly quizzes, a written midterm, a midterm paper, a written final, and a final paper. DO NOT RECCOMEND, not worth the A, find another professor
Prof Smith is underrated. There is a lot of work, but he gives you a lot of time to get it done. He gives great feedback after each assignment so you know what you need to do in order to do well. He is a very fair grader too, it is very hard to do poor in this class.
Dr. Curtis Smith is a great professor to take for sociology and has a good sense of humor. Although there is a decent amount of work, it is graded very fairly. The topics are interesting and if you play some of his modules on two times speed he sounds just like Ben Shapiro. Highly recommend taking his class.
It's crazy to me seeing anyone would give Professor Smith anything less than a 4 or a 5. I took him for Homelessness and Society (SO 221) sophomore year. He's super knowledgeable on the subject, always willing to answer any questions, and VERY understanding with late work or students having busy schedules. I would 100% recommend him to anybody.
Only one midterm that is multiple essay questions and the final is one big essay but not difficult just do the assigned reading and take notes in class. One pop-up quiz which beforehand he reviewed all the answers. Heavy on discussion and lectures but keep students engaged with questions. Do the readings, take notes and weekly journals to pass.
Very good professor. I took this class initially because I couldn't get into required my classes, but I would 100% take it again. The lectures are a bit more discussion base so they aren't boring. There is a bit of reading, but you can get away with skimming. Really caring professor who is passionate about the subject.
don't take this class with smith. pointless class that consists of watching videos of him giving lectures then completing long discussion board posts four or five times a week. This class was a waste of time
Literally an online class. Professor Smith shows no concern for his students and this is the first professor at Bentley I never once made a connection with. He assigns an absurd amount of work for an elective class like weekly discussion board modules, research papers, weekly quizzes and exams. Do not take this class if you do not have to.
Professor Smith is a solid choice and his flipped classroom lets you most of the work on your own time. a lot of the lectures are pre-recorded and if you do the work should be an easy A.
Great guy really tries to make sure that students are doing well. There is a good amount of work that you have to do but as long as you pay attention and follow the directions you should do well. Very flexible weekly schedule since class attendance is non-mandatory.
Professor Smith is the best professor you can have in Bentley. I understand why some people have given a low rating, since the course is very lecture heavy and you watch a lot of videos. However, he explains the topics very well and makes the lectures interesting. He gives great feedback on the chapter modules and is accessible outside the class.
lazy guy who doesnt care about teaching
I came to Bentley to make connections with other students and most of all, Professors. This class has given me none of that. I dont even think this professor even knew my name.
not fair grader and extremely lazy professor. if you dont agree with his opinions then you will fail the class. Do not take it.
If you give Professor Smith a negative review, you're nuts. He's the best teacher I have ever taken and genuinely an amazing soul.
I wish i can get to know Professor Smith more since I am rating the professor. However i am simply rating this class here. The work load is not absurd, but it is so repetitive to the point being absurd. The class is essentially meaningless, every class is just watching pre-recorded videos. I love Professor Smith, but this class gets a 1/5 at most.
Professor Smith is a great guy. SO132 is a hard course if you're a person like me who's not much into sociology and is merely an amateur in sociology as a whole. Nonetheless, Professor Smith is a solid choice for SO132. He makes the subject very easy to understand. However, be expected to watch hour long videos every week as part of homework.
Not the best, not the worst. Lectures are prerecored but you are supposed to show up in class just to watch them and have him stop to talk every now and then. Submit 3 paragraphs per video (3-4 videos per week). It's easy to pass the class, just a lot of work. Weekly online quizzes, not hard at all. Lots of writing. No in class exams.
Worst academic experience of my life. While the actual course is remarkably simplistic, this professor makes it horrible. I have spent more time on those course than MA126 and GB212 combined. He is lazy, egotistical and worst of all has no understanding how what is a reasonable workload. DO NOT TAKE if you want to remain a sane person.
This guy is a weirdo. All assignments are ambiguous as ____ and the questions he asks make me think he is a closeted racist. If you think I am being overly dramatic just wait until you get to the later chapters.
Honestly, I didn't like him when the course first start, a lot of workloads, but turns out he is very nice and you just need to get work done to get good grade, 100% on the only essay, and would take again.
Great guy, but half the class is watching prerecorded video so it gets boring at times. Workload is decently light but you can't slack off if you want a good grade.
I honestly don't understand the negative reviews. Yes, he records lectures and has full videos on it but I see that as a benefit not bad. That way you can choose your learning times and the modules are pretty interesting but time-consuming. He gives critical feedback and helps students.
Read the negative reviews. That should speak for itself. You really do not want to take this class. It's not worth your time or money.
Dr. Smith continuously checks on how students are doing, it is evident he truly cares. Attendance is not taken but you gain a lot from attending class as slides are not posted. If you ever have any questions or concerns he is more than happy to meet most times of the day to assist. Great professor!
I'm a slacking student, but I was able to do fairly well in this course by just paying attention in class, taking a few notes then writing weekly reflections. They are at most 10 sentences. I don't get the whining about 'hEaVy wOrkLoaD,' like bruh he canceled our midterm paper and academic articles take an hour. If you have a brain, you'll do well.
Flipped Classroom but that's really just an excuse for the professor to not teach. Workload is insane, 3+ hours every week to watch and respond to video modules. Long midterm and final papers, lengthy research paper, weekly quizzes and more writing assignments. Easy A, but wayyyy too many hours of busywork.
Professor Smith has lots of class recordings for each class. We need to complete 3-4 threads each weak, which is easy following the videos. The exams are all base on the recordings.
Professor Smith really cares and knows a lot about sociology. The class is super interesting, so the work can be pretty easy to get done. This being said, it is a decent amount of work. Be prepared to watch 1-1.5hrs of modules a week on top of responding to them. Professor Smith is a great and likable person who really cares about his students.
This class is extremely easy to get a 4.0. Any of the recent reviews that complain about the workload don't understand college-level courses. The final paper is optional and the midterm paper is graded based on the works cited page. Academic articles take 30-45 minutes.
Dr. Smith is a good teacher, cares about his students and is clear on how to succeed in his class. Classes are taught through videos so easy to go back and relearn material if you need to. A couple papers through the semester and a quiz after each week. Overall would definitely take him again.
Great professor, I don't seem how anyone could call him a racist. He truly cares for his students and their learning. Definitely take this course.
Very knowledgable, usful information. Two research papers but one is optional. Tests are easy.
Amazing Professor! Initially was worried about the flipped platform of this class. As things got running through the semester it became super easy to follow and keep up. Complete the Modules and Quizzes and you should be on top of everything.
He was so understanding if you go to his office hours and talk to him. You can tell he cares about the material he is teaching about and his students learning. He is loud but you get used to it. Good amount of homework most of class is just a lecture.
The professor records class videos in advance and you could review them at any time. There are an average of 3 discussion boards every week. You can really learn a lot of useful information about society in this class. The feedback is given quickly. The credit for each homework is easy to get if you not working very bad.
Professor Smith writes his own ratemyprofessor reviews... Just read one of the positive ones does that sound like a college kid? I took Professor Smith this past semester, the class is an easy A no question. He is the epitome of arrogance and laziness. He often talks down to many students and is disrespectful, he has the I am always right attitude
This guy is an absolute joke. Waste of probably over 50 hours doing dumb work.
I have no qualms placing this guy in the same category as Pol Pot and Mussolini. Assigns a comical amount of work for a sociology class at a business school. Forget about asking questions in this class, you will be blatantly disrespected as he enjoys to correct students on topics they haven't learned yet. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This guy stinks... He is very closed-minded making the class miserable to go through. It's his way or no way. Laziest professor ever. He takes forever to grade the few papers that we have. Spent the whole class watching the pre-recorded classes that he used for the COVID year. He has been getting paid to do nothing for the past few years now.
This guy wrote 11 reviews for himself in two days to raise his ratemyprofessor ratings. Embarrassing. Avoid this class at all costs
Class is brutal. He likes to make students not like to participate by making them feel like they're wrong and dumb for being wrong. If you don't agree with him you won't get full credit. Absolute schmuck.
I can't believe this guy has written enough of his own ratings to give himself a 5 star. Wish he put that much effort into his videos and classes.
Inbred Ben Shapiro.
Smith is an okay choice for SO132. The class consists of watching prerecorded videos in class and responding to each video with 3 paragraphs. With 3-4 videos a week this is a lot of writing already. On top of that theres papers and research article responses and quizzes. Too much homework. Easy A if you do the assignments
Curt gets lots of shade for his SO132 class, which is an intro class. I took him for both 333 and 221, and both of those classes are a whole new ball game. He knows his stuff. He works w/ students, and often cancels exams and papers. Never wrote a paper in homelessness, despite 2 being in the syllabus. Non-132 classes are easy A's. Great prof.
I don't the below reviews are talking about. I took Dr. Smith for 3 courses over my time at Bentley and loved every class I took with him. He truly cares about his students and provides a lot of interesting information about Sociology. Each class dove deeper into the course subjects and he was an invaluable professor for me at Bentley.
Professor Smith is a great person but is definitely all over the place. His lectures will start one way and you'll end at a completely different path than where you started. His grading is very unclear and his assignments have very little and unclear directions though the class itself is easy. If you do your work you get a good grade, easy A
This class is an easy A if you do all the work, but if is a lot of work per week. Midterm and final are take home, but the class is basically watching 40 min videos of him talking, which can be very boring. Wouldn't take again but it is a good option for sociology.
Weekly two page journals due every Sunday. Graded midterm paper very lightly but his exams are difficult as he does not post notes, review or give you a real sense of what will be on it. I didn't buy the textbooks and was completely fine. He wrote one of his textbooks and it costs 45 dollars. Pocketing money off of his own class. Very repetitive.
The Goat
A lot of work for each week and midterm but if you do all of your work, pretty okay class. Weekly quizzes are open-book and online. If you are ready to handle the heavy workload, take this class.
SO132 is easy. The workload people are talking about here is completely exaggerated. The homework is literally posting the notes you took from class plus answering one question. If you leave it all to the end of the week, sure it's a pain but taking good notes in class literally makes it almost nothing. Canceled our final paper, take-home midterm.
If you want a good grade in SO-132 you should take him. I can't blame the guy, he created videos of his lectures during Covid so now he just shows them in class and stands there as we watch, he hasn't had to teach since 2020. Pretty much every week consists of 2-3 pages of writing for the modules, it's really just busy work. T
Class was easy for the most part. 2 exams, 2 papers, 4 academic responses, weekly quizzes, pre-recorded class, lots of writing. Each academic response took 2 hrs max, and got full points. Paper is basically repeating the academic response paper 5x. Exams were tough cuz directions were unclear, hard to find him outside of class. Overall easy A
Definitely recommend taking this professor. All of his lectures are recorded, so if you miss anything in class, you can catch up afterwards. Super clear on grading criteria, and he sometimes drop exams if the class is doing really well on the modules.
Professor Curtis is an oddball and sounds like Ben Shapiro. Today in class he told us that he doesn't care about reviews, and then asks us to give him a review here because he is so down bad. This class is a breeze if you dedicate time to do the lessons, however they are very long, boring, and outdated since they were made during COVID.
No final exam if you do well on the midterm exam. Very clear on instructions. Fair grader. Would recommend him to anyone thinking about taking the course. Interesting material and he's quite passionate.
Took his SO298 class and it is the best class I have taken at Bentley so far. He is very engaging and really knows what he is talking about. He makes the class very fun and makes the material very easy to understand. I highly recommend his class and I do not understand why he has bad reviews, he is a very cool and chill teacher! TAKE HIM!
Professor Smith is great professor overall. When signing up for courses the rating scared me a little but as the class started he seemed friendly. We had weekly journals, two academic papers, and two research papers but he was a really easy grader on all of them. Easy 4.0
Great professor, pretty easy class all around. We had one test and it was the Midterm and it was very manageable. Highly recommend this professor for Sociology.
Prof is pretty stoke and not too much work furda. Dumb easy highly recommend
Very interesting class gives a lot of perspective. The workload is manageable and the grading isn't too bad.
He cares very much about the subject he teaches. However, there is a ton of homework, so keep that in mind if signing up for him. You will get a lot out of the class, but you have to stay up to date with weekly journals and academic articles. Tough test grader but an easy essay grader.
Curtis Smith is the GOAT
Professor Smith is extremely passionate about what he teaches, he pushes lectures right to the last few minutes of class but makes sure students are all on the same page and keeping up. He loves to have students participate in class but it is not required. Do not take if you do not want to do a weekly two page journal or other read a lot.
Very easy grader on papers and other written assignments. Prepare to take all notes in class as he doesn't post slides online. He told us what the midterm would go over so it was easy to study. Classes are lecture heavy and he often cold calls groups for discussion
Professor's teaching style is based on many class discussion on the readings. So reading can lead to better in class discussions. He keeps the lectures interesting.
I wasn't sure how I felt about Smith at the start of the semester. However, he ended up being very easy with grading (let us submit late, mostly As, etc), and was always positive and engaging. Lectures were detailed and not boring. It gets a little tedious sometimes, but if you want a good grade and laid back prof, take this dude.
Curt Smith is not a munch. I would go to battle for my boy
Smith isn't the hardest prof; he mostly grades easily. However, he's mean in emails & doesn't make students feel like they can reach out w/o judgment. Won't remind u of upcoming papers &assumes students will just know from the syllabus w/o bringing anything up. He's a tedious grader, so read his instructions carefully or your grades can drop.
Great dude. Lots of writing. Each week there is a 2 paragraph weekly journal, 4 academic articles (3 paragraphs), 1 essay, and a midterm and final. Super interesting class otherwise.
You will do work in his class but he does not expect you to do anything that is unreasonable. Anytime I needed an extension I received it and his grading was very fair on every assignment. As long as you do the work which is very manageable you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
Overall I would take this class again because I got an A. He can be a tough grader on papers but as long as ur citations are perfect he usually grades pretty generously. The grading for this class is 20% attendance 20% weekly journals 10% midterm 10% final etc so it makes it hard to do bad. Can be a decent amount of busy work as times but its easy
Like the other reviews say, this guy is an oddball. Everything has to be exactly his way or you gets points off. A lot of busy work that for whatever reason he insists on not reminding the students forcing you to rely on checking his syllabus every day. Not really the nicest in the emails. Only take take him if you have to.
Just want to bring a review back up to the top that Prof. Smith writes his own ratemyprofessor reviews. Very arrogant man who does not care about his students, or really anyone other than himself. Would not recommend. Sad because this is an interesting class/topic
His class is interesting, and he is very passionate about immigration. He teaches in a manner that is easy to digest and encourages discussion. The class opens ur eyes to alot of issues and myths about immigration that you hear in the media. Heavy on writing and doing citations properly.
I wish this site would let me use "d*rogatory" terms because those are the only ones that accurately describe Prof Smith. He loves to hear himself talk, to the point where he cuts off students mid-sentence. Rather inconsiderate for a social worker, and very dismissive and rude in emails and one-on-one conversations. Take anyone else
Professor Smith was extremely enthusiastic and passionate about the materials covered during this class. There are weekly assignments that can get annoying but they aren't hard at all. Very fair grader as long as you format the paper and citations correctly. Would take again because of how straight forward he was.
Professor smith was a dog. I found homelessness and society to be super interesting and enjoyed participating so that might warp my view. The class was just a journal on the reading and your thoughts every week with a mid term research paper and mid term and final test. Was always understanding I uploaded a couple journals late and still got credit
Pretty interesting class about homelessness. He also repeats the same thing every class so as long as you remember everything he says you will do fine on the exams. Also, be sure to format your paper and cite sources on your papers correctly.
I do not understand why he gets this much hate. Course is easy with weekly journals (two paragraphs), one midterm paper, midterm, and open book final. If you spend an hour a week it is an easy 4.0. He cares about the content he teaches and if you want help with google scholar and how to conduct research take this course. I did not mind the class.
Worst professor at bentley tbh
This class is extremely boring, and he drags his lessons until the last second. There is a lot of busy work, and he expects you to do a lot of reading. It is not hard to get a good grade in the class, but you still have to do a lot of work. There are weekly 2-page journals,1-2 research papers,4 article responses,1 midterm, and 1 take-home final.
Honestly nice guy mad ferda, cares about students yall should take him just do the work
REAL STUDENT REVIEW=This class felt sitting in political lectures. There is a lot of busy work and Professor Curtis seems like he's all over the place at times. Plus, it seems like he writes his own reviews on here which tells you all you need to know. On the flip side, this class is a guaranteed A if you put in some effort and just pay attention.
This class is interesting and honestly the course load isn't out of this world. He lets you re-submit most of the work to gain full credit. Other than that there are a couple of quizzes but he puts the test questions on the study guide. Classes contain a lot of slides but there are a few short movies that we watch which are interesting.
I would take this course again, it is mostly lecturing and assignments are super clear. Only 2 papers, a journal every week with reading and four article wright ups. He lets you resumbit the article write ups which is great! Overall I wouldn't hesitate to take this professor!
I don't understand the poor reviews. I took him for Homelessness and Society this semester, and the class is very interesting. He's super knowledgeable on the topic due to his previous fieldwork. He repeats the stuff he wants you to know for the midterm and final in every class, which makes it super easy to do well on them. Easy grader, nice guy5/5
Personally, I submitted a lot of the assignments late and I talked to him about it and still received full credit. Some classes may seem a little boring but overall not bad at all. Genuine great teacher.
Professor Smith's SO221 class is engaging, albeit with some weekly busywork. Stay focused, use the textbook, and try Unstuckstudy for study prep - it's a big help alongside other resources like ChatGPT. Overall, a fair grader who makes the material interesting.
The class is purely lecture and very repetitive, there is a lot of work in this class but you can get buy. What really changed my perspective is that for the first research paper he was an extremely harsh grader and gave the majority of the class a bad grade. When people do participate he tends to undermines their opinion.
He is the toughest grader I've had at Bentley because if you don't subscribe to his politics, then good luck trying to get a good grade. Honestly disappointing. Multiple people in class feel the same way. We fact-checked him during class, and it was clear that he was over exaggerating numbers to fit his politics. Also gave us a pop quiz.
I would not recommend this professor. He is a nice guy who knows a lot about the subject however there is a ridiculous amount of work for a sociology class and he is the hardest grader I've ever had. He uses bad grades and busy work to get his point across. 2 long essays. Weekly 2 page journals. 3 tests. 4 page final. pop quizzes. Don't take!
He has tons of knowledge, both from first-hand experience and studying what he teaches. I loved this class up until the very end. While the whole semester he is very thorough and explains in detail, the end can become very overwhelming. In the last week, there was nearly the same amount of work due as the rest of the semester combined.
He grades like he is an Austrian fella who got rejected from art school.
Extremely harsh grader, especially when it comes to the research paper. Average on the papers was a C. Also gave a pop quiz on something we didn't talk much about. He is very passionate about what he teaches but does not take opposing opinions well. Also, 1/2 the stuff lectured on is useless information and makes no sense. Had to read 2 books too.
Very condescending and stuck up
Professor Smith is very passionate about what he teaches, but not open to any opinions other than his own. He acknowledges that he "teaches this class like a graduate class." He is a tough grader and not open to student feedback. He is very condescending. He expects an absurd amount of work for a c&p.
Genuinely the worst class I have ever taken- I have spent so many hours and so much effort on the weekly papers and every other of the many assignments. Unclear with feedback and inconsistent. Take any other C & P please for your sake.
To be honest my opinion of this professor has definitely gotten better as the semester has gone on. this isn't my favorite class but I do appreciate his dedication to the subject and in teaching his students to be better writers and researchers.
He is not a good professor. He really knows his stuff, but he has no awareness of student needs, and his lectures are super boring. There is close to zero engagement/discussion in classes even though he claims to want these things. He will not stop talking, and he does not put in any effort to get to know you as a student.
I learned so much from this class. Professor Curtis genuinely cares and keeps everything fresh with up-to-date videos and research papers. He pushes you to think in new ways, and you walk out with something valuable every time. It sharpens how you connect history to current events. If your goal is to genuinely learn, I highly recommend this class.
Very passionate in what he teaches, genuinely a very interesting class. Lots of work and MANY papers, but not un-do-able. Just pay attention and be thorough with your work and you will be fine.
The content itself is actually very interesting, and Professor Smith is genuinely passionate about what he teaches, I just wish the course was slightly more discussion centered. There are a lot of assignments, with weekly journals, 4 academic article responses, and a few research papers and exams, but the assignments themselves aren't very hard.
I can tell Professor Smith cares about his class and the people he is teaching. Sadly, he is teaching a very divisive topic, and there is a clear bias he has. This bias has made conversation a little awkward. However, I have learned a lot from this class. I just wish he graded easier and listened to students a little more.
Professor Smith really cares about what he's teaching, and it shows during class and lectures. If you go to office hours, he'll help you out a lot. He's a tough grader but most of the rubrics are pretty clear it's just in a very specific format. If you want an easy grade, he might not be the choice, but you will learn a lot.
Prof. Smith is very passionate about this topic. The class is graded by weekly journals, a few papers, 2 exams. While he is a okay teacher, he allows his bias to get in the way. He is an extremely tough grader on exams/quizzes and wants exact word-for-word answers that are unrealistic to expect. Class is very interactive. Overall mid
Very passionate about what he teaches, but he is not a good professor. Way too much for a C&P class (weekly journals, two papers, midterm, and final), and grades are very inconsistent. A lot of what he teaches is irrelevant, and the course loses track of its focus. Stay away from this professor at all costs. He also has a lot of bias.
The HNR445 capstone class itself is great. I couldn't recommend it more. In terms of Professor Smith himself, I would not recommend him. He's a good guy who you can tell is VERY passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches, but his lectures are insufferable. In general, I did get a lot out of the course, but all he does is talk about himself.
Good professor if you're interested in the courses he teaches. Very passionate about the material, but tends to dominate discussions and doesn't leave room for other viewpoints, and his own opinions are very clear. He grades papers harshly and seems to assume everyone already has a strong background in sociology. Can be disorganized for lectures
Professor is super passionate about the subject which is great. HOWEVER, the class is extremely disorganized. Didn't know anyone's names for the entire semester with only 12 kids in the class. His ego is insane and he doesn't seem to care about his students. THAT BEING SAID, a great option if you need service learning and the pathway. Easy A.
