She's very hard and isn't very helpful with assignments or preparing for tests.
A great teacher who makes learning fun
Very unclear lectures, not very approachable
I learned so much, thank you.
Great teacher--very knowledgeable & enthusiastic. Will definitely take more cou

Wonderful
thinks she knows all and makes you speak old english aloud in class
Good attitude towards students, helpful too if your willing to learn
she made grammer fun and deserves a medal for it!
Great Teacher. Make sure you wanna take her class before you take it!
not very approachable, marks way too hard for a 200 level course

horrible marker, especially for eng 116, nice in the classroom, sometimes has choclate, but it doesnt help much when it comes to marks
I found this instuctor very well-prepared with lots of helpful hand-outs. She's excellent if you want to learn proper grammer and develop lifelong writing skills.

Her alchemy class is one of the most useful and lucrative classes I've ever taken. I'll never need to apply for another job given all the gold I've accumulated in one semester alone!
A good instructor. She is hard, but fair. Loves her discipline and it shows :) Expects alot from her students, be prepared as it is not an easy class.
she's a unfair marker and not very understanding to the situations of students. she takes the student disconcern with the course personally, highly inappropriate
very hard marker, don't be late for her class, and if you want to do well get help from her after class and show that you want to do better, she'll seriously give you a better mark if she knows your really giving it your best.
hard marker, but will increase marks for students that show interest. set up meetings with her! super helpful
very hard marker. if you get a bad mark for placement essay, your mark won't budge for the rest of class. don't recommend
Everything must be done by the book. Doesn't know the diff. between composition and literature classes.
Extreemly hard marker. Although she is quite clear and quite helpful do not be fooled! She will mark at a much higher level than other first year professors tend to do. I do not recommend this professor, especially if your like your gpa.
very enthusiastic about her subject... very helpful... marking seemed hard but showed me how to improve, and I got better marks after that with my other essays in other english courses because I learned how to write a strong essay in her course...

She had a lot of energy and was very enthusiastic about her subject. BUT, she was a very hard marker and often had unreasonable expectations.
Talks down to students, makes you feel dumb. hard marker. have avoided her ever since.
Fairly difficult marker, but if you work hard you will do well. Friendly and has interesting lectures. I never felt bored.
I took Engl 340 just to be in her class. Unfortunately she got sick and we had a different instructor for the rest of the term. But I've taken other courses with her and I really enjoy her approach in the classroom. I recommend her when she comes back.
one of my favorite profs at MalU. Values creativity and spelling and grammer. But, even tho I am horrible at spelling and grammer, she always gives a fair mark if you are creative. Anyways, highly recomment her classes, very passionate about her subjects.
very passionate about medieval lit. but this doesn't make her a better prof.it makes her talk down to students and cut them off while they're talking so SHE can get EVERYTHING that she wants to say out. hard marker, but kind of fair if you put in a lot of effort.take her class if you want.i don't.
Not my experience at all! She always lets us talk and tells us every class that we came up with some really good ideas. She cuts us off from talking sometimes because she needs to get going on the stuff we need to cover. Not really a problem though. Thigns seem balanced.
Good teacher. Smart, engaging. Difficult marker, expects top quality work, but is clear about her expecations. Passionate about the subject, and enthusiastic. Would take classes with Cynthea again.
Ok, at 830 AM monday mornings after being up at 530am for rowing practice Cynthea could keep me awake to study Chaucer, that's no small feat. She's awesome, interesting, engaging, and has a completely infectious love of medieval lit. I was very sad that she had to leave partway into the semster.
Cynthea is still one of my favorite profs. She challenges me as a student and as a person. Because of her I am a better writer and a student. I am glad that I could have taken classes with her every year of my degree, I am sad now that I am graduating and there are no more classes to take with her. Maybe I will just have to go to grad school.
Cynthea is a wonderful teacher. She is enthusiastic and clear. It is a hard class but she is a fair marker. She is encouraging and brilliant. If you are interested in the course take it. Cynthea is a wonderful teacher.
Biased towards men. I asked her to review a grade on an paper."I have been teaching for 15 years and I have never changed a grade". I accepted her statement. I mentioned this to my female physics partner. She then tells me that during the previous semester she went to her for the very same reason. Her grade was changed. VERY INTERESTING!
I was extremely unexcited about taking this class (subject-matter wise). Fortunately, Cynthea was the prof and I soon found out that she can make anything interesting. An absolutely fabulous prof.
Prof. Masson is one of the best teachers at Malaspina. You will be very lucky if you can get in her class. You have to work hard, but it is well worth it.
Cynthea is an awesome teacher. She expects a lot of you but you learn a ton. She is the best teacher I've had so fair at Malaspina. If you are not good at English she is the teacher for you because she goes into great detail about everything. A the first day is freaky it only gets better.
she's not a very understanding professor and it's obvious she's not there to actually help anyone.
Not very clear or helpful, and spent more time talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and sex than the subject matter in the class.
unclear with homework, hard marker, though helpful. can make u feel unconfortabl in class.
Cynthia is an absolutely horrible teacher who favors guys and old students. She is extremely unhelpful and harbors grudges against students she doesn't like.
Cynthea knows her subject and is very devoted to her students. If you are there to learn, you will be rewarded, if not, accept what you get! There's a lot of material to cover but she is enthusiastic about her work and comes to class well prepared. Nice person and classes are fun--She is also open to her students' thoughts on subjects.
Knows her stuff. She got just as excited as we did about good discussion. She's a real student's professor, meaning if you're just in college so you don't have to work yet, then you might not get what you could out of her classes. But if you are there to learn, she's great!
Cynthea gives very clear instructions, so it's easy to succeed in her class. She's not an easy marker, but this class helped me become a better writer. She encouraged me to continue on in English, and this inspired confidence in my writing abilities. I would definitely take another class with her, she's a great professor.
I really didn't "click" with her but definately had to admire and appreciate her enthusiasm and incredible knowledge.Chaucer class was cool becuase she broke it up into alot of different assignments. She actually took the time to teach us practical grammar knowledge even though it wasn't on the syllabus just becuase she saw we needed a refresher.
Avoid if possible
I would agree that Masson clicks with some students and not with others. I didn't particularly click with her but found her lectures interesting. She has very high expectations, I got a B on her first midterm and she described that it wasn't up to the writing style of a few of the other students in class. Last time I checked a B was a good grade.
sb avoiding
If you reeeeaaaaly hate somebody, ask him/her to take her class.
If you can get another professor i recommend going with someone else, class time was useless but required, she didn't teach, that 3 hours a week were completely wasted, we learned everything outside of class
Worst teacher I had this semester. I only missed a couple of classes and she still didn't know my name when I went to write the final exam in the gym. Very hard marker, will never take her again. Has her favorites and I was not one of them.
Overall, not a bad english prof. Very clear instructions for all essays but is a hard marker. It seemed like she will mark according to how well she knows you and she does have favourites in class, so participation in discussion is essential. This class taught me a lot and I wouldn't avoid her class.
masson is very rude, she has her favorites, but picks on everyone else in the class who is obviously struggling. Class is very boring and she is a hard marker...She also dislikes students who ask questions in class. She acts like that person is totally wasting class time, but really everyone was wondering the same thing... overall HORRIBLE teacher
Cynthea's instructions are crystal clear. She's a tough marker, but prepares you for business writing perfectly. I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone. If you actually show up she knows your name by the second day, loves it when people join into the conversation and expects a good effort.
Worst professor of my entire college experience. Extremely biased and has her favorites- if you love vampires and medieval literature, you will be one of them. If not, avoid this professor like the plague.
If you are an international student, or you think your english writings are poor, run away. She gives extremely low marks to those who are still trying to learn and improve their writings
cynthea is a hard marker but her instruction is crystal clear. so long as you put the effort in you will walk away with a fair mark.
Cynthea is an amazing person overall. She is compassionate about the english language and that translates into her teaching. She is very helpful in covering all of the necessary materials to ensure success in the course. She marks fairly, as long as you follow the rules of english that she has taught.
Cynthea was the worst professor I have ever had! English has always been one of my favourite subjects and she butchered it! She was uninterested in our class and often times just plain rude. Avoid her!!!
Cynthia is amazing. Such a good prof. I have a learning disability and she was very accommodating and helpful. Would totally recommend her any day to anyone. Wonderful lady.
Cynthea is a very good professor. If you follow the instructions, and do the work assigned to you, she will give you a fair mark. She loves when you participate in class. Although I found her to be a good professor, I would not recommend her to international students or people who struggle with English/writing.
Cynthea is so great! Take her class, you won't regret it. I wish all of my professors were as straightforward and clear as she is. I would be happy to take a class with her agaain.
She is simply horrible. Do not take her class, or you will definitely regret it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. she is a hard marker. she made the course more difficult by her strict rules. If you do not understand any thing basically this is your problem and she wont help you as much as you wish. also, she does not accept any opinion, only her's are right...!!
I am a 4.0 student and in my opinion she is a bad teacher, don't take her courses if you don't have to...
She was the worst instructor I've ever had, and most likely will ever have, in university. She plays favourites in class, and she is very strict when it comes to EVERYTHING. Avoid her at all costs, unless you want to put a lot of effort into something and get a poor grade back for it. Worst. Class. Ever. I couldn't finish the semester fast enough.
She is very specific and I believe her teaching methods are strict to ensure future success. However, this is a first year english class and the expectation were higher than they should be in my personal opinion. I am a high achieving student and in comparison with friends in other sections I am receiving the lowest grades. I will avoid in future.
Now, I am extremelty good at detecting dangling or misplaced modifiers, subordinating adjective clause comma violations, and comma splices as a result of poorly utilized coordinating conjunctions. Cynthea is very intellectual, strict, experienced, personable, and importantly, very serious and passionate about her craft. You will appreciate her.
There are no enough words to describe this amazing prof. People told me she is bias when it comes to international students, but I felt happy in her class. Easy A if you follow instructions precisely. She works hard to make sure her students understand the course material. My advice, you'll benefit from her course. Awesome prof. Good luck :)
Worst class I have ever taken, went form straight A's to D's in this class. Do yourself a favor and avoid this prof at all costs, especially if you want to pass your English class.
Cynthea has left a sour taste in my mouth toward English. The course I've taken with her is English 115. It is an introduction to university writing. For Cynthea, however, the course seens to be "Introduction to writing specifically in her class." I was not taught essay techniques that would prove useful in other courses. I don't suggest this prof.
I never enjoyed English much until Cyntheas class. ENGL 115 is a technical writing course and Cynthea really focuses on the technical aspects of writing. She is a tough but fair marker. Her class is reasonably challenging, and if you put in the effort, you will get great feedback. I wish I could take more classes with Cynthea.
Great Prof, really serious with the lecture, need to be prepared for every class, lots of homework with assigned readings. Helpful if you asked, book appointments with the prof will boost your grade and learn more from feedback.
Out of my 2 years at VIU, Cynthea is the most unreasonable and inconsiderate professors Ive ever had. She chooses favourites based on those who suck up to her, and if you are not one of those students she will grade you accordingly. Her expectations were unclear and impossible to meet, and she was rude to students who reached out. Stay away.
Cynthea is an amazing prof. Whoever has been giving her bad ratings either dont read instructions or show progression. If you dont understand something, she will explain it to you. Her instructions are straight-forward and logical. Shes incredibly engaging and amazing. Cynthea is an intellectual and anybody would be lucky to learn from her.
I think that she was a great prof. She know what she wants and expects nothing less. I like how orginized her class was every day of the class was outlined in the course outline. In order to do well in this couse you do need to show up and participate. Overall if you understad what she is expecting you will do well.
Amazing class, amazing prof. Cynthea's passion for medieval literature will turn you into a Chaucer fan. Keep up with the readings, follow her detailed instructions for assignments, and confidently stumble your way through the first 12 lines of the General Prologue if you want to do well! I can't recommend this class enough! :)
Cynthea is the best of the best. If you want to learn how to write extremely well, hers is the class to take. I learned so much just from watching her give us all feedback on our writing. She knows her stuff cold, is happy to help everyone, and is genuinely happy when we do well. She is super organized and clear about the assignments.
Literally just the worst. I love English, and its always been my strongest subject. Masson has made me loathe it. Shes unfair, her expectations are ridiculous, and shes just outright rude. Avoid at all costs, you will regret taking this class
Lots of work but explains everything thoroughly and clearly. Very kind and understanding and doesnt speak down to students. I would definitely recommend her! Shes also very funny and talks about animal crossing a lot.
Her class was a whirlwind. Cyn is very friendly and kind, but don't underestimate her; she is tough, and her marking is ruthless. I became a better writer thanks to her, but it was not easy. I appreciated her class because it was entertaining and informative. Though it was online, the class felt cohesive and interactive, and Cynthea was accessible
Love her! So happy I got professor Masson as my teacher for my first English course at VIU. She is super helpful and she really cares about her students. My English has improved tremendously because of her. You are lucky if you get her as a teacher. Highly recommend to attend her office hours even if you think you are a good writer.
This was the greatest class I have ever taken. It was an online class about the show Black Mirror, and each week we got to discuss our perspectives of the show. Cynthea's feedback on the assignments helped me to improve my writing. The final exam was a fun assignment! I wouldn't miss an opportunity to learn from the best of the best.
Get ready to read a lot of peer reviewed articles and write an essay every week for the whole semester. She also grades very hard. Don't take her class if you don't have too.
Masson is a great teacher. She is really good at teaching how to write an essay clearly and concisely. This is a good course for learning essay writing. That being said if you have any mental illness whatsoever that makes school difficult for you, she is not the teacher for you. She won't give you a break and she's insanely strict.
Wasn't sure what to make of her at the start of the semester. She can be a little insensitive at times, particularly if you show up unprepared. Make sure to pay attention, and read the syllabus. Ask questions if you don't understand something, and you'll do just fine. Be original, be genuine and she'll be your favorite professor before you know it.
I do know other students who didn't like her but I loved her class. She set us up well with lots of practice before any graded assignments and was super helpful if there was a grade attached.
I would not recommend taking her class if you are new to university. Her expectations are unreasonably high for a first year course. Her classes consist of 'peer critique', where your only feedback on the weekly homework assignments are from other (mostly first year) students. She can be harsh if you are unprepared. Very thorough and intense.
Cynthea was my least favorite prof I've had in my 2 years at VIU. She had incredibly high expectations for a first year course, and talked to us in a demeaning way like we were kindergarteners. She claimed we could choose our own topics for some writing projects, but then shut down many students' ideas.
Cynthea is a great professor! However, if you struggle at following instructions or listening, then she's not for you. Her style of teaching ensures that you will know the structure, rules, and style of the assignment before you start it. Follow it and you'll ace it. if you are not sure, then visit her office hours. she will help you
Super tough, but she knows what she wants. If you follow the course outline, do the homework, show up to class prepared, and participate in discussions, you'll do fine. She sets you up for success, but there is no coasting in this class.
Cynthea is my favourite professor at VIU. She is a tough marker and expects work to be to a high standard. I found her lectures to be engaging and fun. Participation in class is mandatory, but she makes it easy to join in on class discussions. I could tell she cares about her students.
Cynthea is a terrible professor. She's far more interested in telling you about how she's an author, and writing passive aggressive comments on your assignments and being pompous and aloof than actually teaching the course. I could not stress hard enough that you should avoid her classes at all costs.
Her lectures were always engaging, and she's obviously enthusiastic about what she teaches. Her grading is tough, with your attendance corresponding to how she marks assignments. Her feedback, as others have said, is more insulting than instructive. Thank you Cynthea for making me feel pedestrian. Wouldn't want to take a class with her again.
She explains the class topics very well. You will have to write essays on a topic you like, but you must follow the instructions correctly. Check your grammar!
She gives very unclear instructions and does not try to help you in any way. very condescending in feedback and rather rude.
very rude from day one in the course, said things to students during the class that would've personally made me feel stupid. Very sassy prof
Cynthea is a tough prof, but worth the effort. Follow her instructions closely and engage in class. Unstuckstudy was a game-changer for essay prep - highly recommend using it alongside the free course materials.
mean picks favorites
Very critical
Avoid this teacher at all costs. Cynthea provides nearly no help during workshops and expects a near-perfect essay to receive an okay grade. You're unable to contact Cynthea via email and her responses to questions are more demeaning than helpful. If you are a first-year student, I can't stress enough to avoid her.
Honestly, she is the worst teacher I have ever had to deal with. She consistently provides rude and demeaning feedback and complains when your idea is not original enough. However, as she told us, she has been using the same projects for over twenty years. She will fail you over small missed details, which should have been a few marks off.
She picks favourites
She is mean and takes offence over nothing
Crazy picky not nice says awful things in front of entire class and on papers
Lots work for first year. Picky, mesn and hard grader
I can not stress enough that you should avoid her classes at all costs. You will get a low mark unless she likes you
She is terrible for first year students. Extremely hard marker, doesn't give feed back. Most “workshops” consist of peer review not her giving you feedback. Avoid!!
Avoid her at all costs unless you want a bad grade after working harder than any other class. Cynthea expects a perfect essay to get a c, and you can't email her because her responses are demeaning, rude, and unhelpful. She is extremely condescending.
I didn't pay to listen to her talk about how she's an author. She is utterly rude in her comments to students and way too picky. Unrealistic amount of assignments for a technical writing course.
although her online feedback is harsh, she is very understanding and nice in person. she really tries to connect with students. and fear not about her peer reviews, most students don't know what the heck they're doing either and she will come over and review your work if you just raise your hand and ask her too :)
I just read this review below and it sums up this mean woman perfectly. “I didn't pay to listen to her talk about how she's an author. She is utterly rude in her comments to students and way too picky. Unrealistic amount of assignments for a technical writing course.”
This class was way too much work and Dr. Mason was mean to everyone except her two favourites.
Do not take this class with cinthea. All of my friends who took it with other profs had way less work.
Cinthea does not try to help you at all. She is very condescending when giving feedback and outrageously rude. I don't want to hear about her books. I don't like professors that are so obvious about having favourites
I felt like I learned a lot with Cynthea, much more than I have in previous English courses, and it will help me in the future. She can be a bit rude at times, though most of the time it doesn't seem to be coming from a place of malicousness. However, I could see if you were someone already struggling that her comments could really affect you.
