She is sooooo broing and her projects suck!. You learn little and yo do a lot, specially raggs and rictches
EXTREMELY boring. Got a C in the class without doing much and I slacked off a ton. Tests are straightforward. Very hard to go to class.
Not helpful at all. Got a D in her class. She is soooooooooooo boring!!!
very nice but..........very unclear about the assignments, she will let you turn in assignments late if needed. i would not take her again, she just seems unorganized and not sure what she is doing
Very nice and sweet lady, sometimes hard to understand the material, but always willing to talk to you and help you after class, i would take another classs from her
Repeat after me, I will not take her in the Summer. I took her family and relationships class in summer.Info overload. She will tell you herself, this class should not be offered in the summer. She's nice, but very difficult to contact after clas (E-mail)
She's very nice and softspoken but she takes especially long to answer questions and is SO boring. She talks and talks and talks. Luckily I took her video course and only saw her twice over the summer.
Telecourse summer class was quite easy. Only three assignments and two tests. She's really boring but the class itself is easy becasue of her 'study guides'.
Way too much work. Rambels on about NOTHING all semester, she forgets about tests and quizes & they aren't based on the book or the lectures ... Likes to her herself talk but has nothing to say. Hard grader & very unclear about assignments! MISTAKE TO TAKE HER! (if you want a good grade)
She rambles and her assignments are hardly Soc oriented. She is very nice, but definatly not a good choice if you are interested in Soc.
Good class, gets everyone involved in disscussions. Take notes, and read the chapters she assigns. Test are very hard, 100 questions each. Papers and projects are fun and fairly simple, over all good class and good teacher
I thought I would fail...but she generously gave me a C. Very sweet woman, very understanding. telecourse is easy...very very easy...3 assignments and 2 tests. gives u a study guide that makes it easier. I hardly did anywork at all, and I got a C. I recomand her.
Big mistake to take her. She babbles a lot, tests are hard because she doesnt cover any material that will be on the test. Most unorganized person I have ever seen. She left the class to make copies ,could have given us the quiz before she left. What a Bore 2!!!!
Extremely boring... Not a fun class whatsoever...
Was interested in the class before taking it; very forgetful professor; she forgot our Mid-Term exam, made us take the wrong one, and then made us retake another. We were 2 weeks behind after just the first month of class!!!
Helpful and open to questions from students, although the material is very dry and you need to read the text book to get a decent grade of the exams. She talks a lot and the class can be boring. But as a person she has great interpersonal skills and remembers your name
She's a very nice and compassionate person. Her teaching style is great, but somewhat disorganized. Her class lectures were very interesting, except when people started to be defensive, which was stupid, but anyways... don't be scare on the first day, the stuff she makes us do aren't so bad. 2 essays, 1 ten pages research paper, a team talk, 3 exam
she's a nice teacher, always willing to help. she's kinda disorganized and not so good w/ time management. her tests are something u do have to study 4. in this class every point counts, u should participate in class, u do 1 research proposal, u do hw almost every week, u have 10 mini ques. quiz every so often. seems overwhelming but not too bad
I think she is a beautiful, smart woman. Sometimes it fels like there are questions on the test that she did not talk about but she is a reasonable person. I love listening to her voice because it is calming. I am not very into Soc, but if that is your major, take her.
most rediculous class ever, i did not learn pne thing in this class, its a complete waste of time. I was a sociology major until her. Do not tale this teacher. it was horrible.
she is a very nice and easy teacher. I wasnt doing so well in the class but if she knows you she's very lenient.
Class started out ok. She's very confusing as far as knowing what she wanted on her assignments. She has a required "ride the bus" field trip which was a waste of time. There is a group project worth 100 pts. She made class VERY boring, and uninteresting. Test's are somewhat difficult. Ended up with a B, don't know how.
Hints to succeeding in her class: Get all reading materials - and read the assignments BEFORE lectures. Makes it much easier to understand. She does have you take a lot of notes, however, the tests include some reading material as well. Also there is a method to the madness. Every assignment means something. I'd take her again...in a heartbeat!
I took the Intimacy Relationships and Commitment class DON'T TAKE HER SHE IS HARD AND UNFAIR. She doesn't round, and her tests are 150 questions and you have only 2 hrs to take it thats less than a minute per question don't take her unless you want a C or D
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! DO NOT TAKE HER! she has no clue what shes doing! worst teacher ever! i took her last semester and the classes started with 35 people and ended with 8 people in it casue everyone else dropped is cause shes soo bad! take anyone else but her!!!!!!! she is very unfair... did learn a thing!!
I took her televideo class. She is very unhelpful and does not curve the midterms. The midterms are HARD. She does not contact you AT ALL throughout the semester. She is not the worst teacher in the world but I would not recommend taking her. I got the highest grade on the midterm and I got a B-.
I took the online course. Being that the subject matter moved rather quickly, I found the professor to be almost impossible to get a hold of. I also thought that there was way too much information in a short amount of time. BUT, she did give me an A when I felt I really earned a B... So I guess grading makes up for her unorganized approach.
I took her intro to Sociology televideo. the videos were extremely boring and outdated, she made us do flashcards and internet entries, and u know what was on the final. it was pretty easy, and you do learn things that are interesting. take televideo
RUN AWAY!!!! JUST TAKE IT AT A 4 YEAR! IT WAS SO HARD AND ALOT OF HOMEWORK! THE FINAL IS THE WORST. ALOT OF WORK! O YEAH TESTS ARE WEEKLY!
oh my god, she's amazing. i loved her. it was so easy. she's really easy to work with. she's easy with extensions. she's willing to work around your schedule. easy A
this class is difficult..as it had two texbook..to read..n alot of powerpoint presentation. as the class was movin ..there was alot of material, there was a presentation to be given and group talk, interview to take of person in army, plus a movie to watch..plus pop quizzes..it was just too much..for a Intro class.
Nice lady, and has a passion for the subject matter. However, her method stinks! She has a hard time explaining the material. Way too much busywork assigned, and she lost total control of the pace of the class. We fell behind and had to drop some of the exercises. Textbook is a hard read and I never used it after ch 4. That being said I got a B.
She's the sweetest lady I love her. But her class is soooo boring. Have to do community service projects & a big research paper which is lame. Not that hard..quizes are easy but you have to study for tests. oh & honors have a poster board project. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Surprisingly difficult class. Tests are hardest I've had yet even though they are MC. Tough grader. Does not tell you what she wants on assignments even when you ask. Honors research poster has not real explanation. Still not quite sure what she wanted. Not done yet but no clue how someone can get an "A" Don't know anyone who does have one now.
Nice lady but very disorganized. Three tests which are harder than I thought they would be and a research project which is very unclear. People asked questions about the research paper which she could not answer. She seems like she has no idea what she is doing. Also loses papers! She lost three of my seminar questions.
generally in the first month, one gets a clear understanding of what a teacher wants in regards to essays, short answers on tests, etc. in the case of cynthia barnett, you can forget about clarity. she is BY FAR the MOST disorganized, unclear, flip-flop professor i've EVER had. honestly, some people should just know when to retire.
She's nice, but so incredibly boring, she talks in a monotone voice, and reads straight from the text. i didnt really learn a lot in her class at all. lots of pop quizzes.
R.M.P. is usually spot on. Not in this case. Excellent prof., knowledgeable, helpful, available anytime. Lots of work/studying though. This is a foundational class to our major so, i didn't mind. Do the work and you should do well.
Cynthia is so nice and really cares about her students. I took her Screening Gender (soc/film) class and found the material interesting and entertaining. Attendance is mandatory, so don't miss a class. The tests aren't easy so make sure you study. There's 1 or 2 papers and they're not too hard. She's really sweet; ask for help if you need it.
Nice teacher but very very unorganzied. I've never heard a teacher say "I forgot" so many times in my life! Doesn't go by syllabus at all, forgets to assign the assignments, forgets to put the slides up on the website even with a quiz assigned the next day. Doesn't respond to emails! Has a hard time getting to the point of what she wants to say..
I just finished up the Intimacy/Relationship online course. She replied via email within a day and was clear with the instructions. The only thing is that we had to write a 5 page research paper interviewing 8 people, do weekly discussions, take 3 tests, and 1 group project - a lot for 1 month, right?
Took her Intimacy and Relationships class online. Had to read the ENTIRE textbook in a month, plus do her discussions and research paper. She took her class way to seriously for an online summer class and I thought her feedback was very rude most of the time. Hard grader too. Overall, I didnt like her online class one bit.
Keeping up with this class is 100% up to the student. She doesn't email or remind one at all of her rigorous due dates and short deadlines. Large assignments at very inopportune times (during mid-terms in your physical classes), arbitrary assignments, all are the par for this course. Stay away if you are not a Sociology major.
She reminds me a bit of a Kindergarten teacher. She's very sweet, but not so great at teaching. She never reminds you of important deadlines until the class before the assignment is due. The tests are super easy if you follow the study guide, though.
She is the most unclear teacher I have ever had, is very disorganized, unwilling to help people. I never go onto sites to write about my experiences or anything but I disliked her so much that I decided to rate her. Don't take this class.
Took the online course. Discussions are easy and generally pass/fail. The biggest downside is that the only two tests are 100 questions. Normally not a problem, but the testing period is 75 minutes, less than a minute per question and no time to check answers! Lots of undue test anxiety and it will probably get me a C in a class that should be easy.
She's so nice, but she's so disorganized...The classes are so boring, and she talks about one subject FOREVER and then we end up getting behind. She doesn't explain projects or assignments well, doesn't reply quickly to emails and is just disorganized...ugh...
Before my first day, I was expecting this class to be difficult, boring and stressful because of what I read on here... but I was so pleasantly surprised! Cynthia is seriously SO nice! She is so engaging with her lectures and class discussions are actually very interesting. Work amount and tests are not bad! This was one of my favorite classes!
Very hard to get ahold of and not helpful at all. She goes on and on about the same subject, causing the class to get behind, and very infrequently discusses things that have any relation to what is given on the final and midterm.
She is so difficult to get a hold of! I emailed her multiple times over the semester asking her what my grade in her class was (because she would not grade any individual assignments) and I never received an email back. The semester has been over now for a few weeks now and she has still only graded the first three assignments of the semester.
I have never rated a professor before but i need to right now. This teacher is absolutely terrible. For those who are forced to take her, just find a different school. Shes a major reason why i switched majors. Somehow shes the head of the sociology dept. Worst teacher on campus. Your grade will not reflect what you deserve.
Cynthia is a very nice woman. She can be unclear at times but is more than willing to help with anything you need. It is not a hard class as long as you show up and listen. I would definitely recommend her.
This Professor is very nice. She is enthusiastic and gets the class interested in the subject. She is fair, and gives you access to her PP presentations and a study guide for all exams. If you actually show up, and pay attention your going to pass this class. I really enjoyed this class and would take other classes she taught.
The down side is boring subject! BUT she is a really sweet lady! You can tell she is very passionate about sociology! She is not strict when it comes to turning in assignments late, she is kind of all over the place, her quizes are easy and tests are not that hard she does give you a study guide for the exams and quizes which is helpfull!
I took the online class and I have to say I've never been so turned off by a professor. Took a 1.5 months to grade the individual project, and accused me of plagiarism, submitting the project LATE and errors. NOT easy to get a hold of, assigned a GROUP project that was really hard to coordinate between the groups she assigns you to.
Someone has already said that they are switching majors because of her class, and I 100% agree. She is really nice and everything, but should NOT be a teacher. She is very sporadic, and difficult to get a hold of. She asks a lot of trick questions on quizzes, and gives back your stuff very late. Avoid at all costs if you can!!!!
I have never received a C in my entire academic life. I can not believe what a joke this class was. She is all over the place in her teaching style, and there is no substance. She marked off multiple points in our group projects if we forgot to add a comma, or a period. I would avoid this teacher whatever you do. Keep your sanity, and get out!
I thought I was going to be the only one who didn't like this professor. I am not, apparently. Everything has already been said that is bad about her. Hard to get a hold of, doesn't answer emails, extremely difficult, and frequent, tests... Avoid at all costs, people :/
TERRIBLE "professor"! Ridiculously hard quizzes and tests. Online posts are rarely given full credit, unless you literally answer EVERY SINGLE PART of her exact long, overly drawn out and over-detailed questions. Takes FOREVER to return grades. Way to take an interesting subject and turn it into a stressful nightmare. DO NOT TAKE this professor.
Takes attendance. Outlines assignments and grading in the beginning of the semester. I had an 89% and she wouldn't round up to give me the A :( She gets pretty harsh ratings but I'm not really sure why. If you do the work in her class and use her study guides for exams, you'll get at least a B. I didn't use her text book very much.
This is a fairly simple class to pass if you put in the work, which is a somewhat reasonable amount for college level students. Cynthia Barnett is not a difficult grader and is very helpful when you have questions. She is very nice and encourages class participation. You cannot get by without reading the assigned text!
I took this class because the class schedule said it was going to be a different professor. When I walked into class on the first day I as surprised to see someone else. Her lectures are slow and usually never on topic. She also gives tests that have nothing to do with the lecture or the book. 010 DO NOT RECOMMEND
This class was pretty hard. She gives so much work to do that you lose count but it helps. She's really into group projects but she makes sure that everyone does their part. She'll give you full credit for a lot of things if she sees that you are actually trying. She's also very lenient; especially if you go to her office and ask for help.
Took an online course of intimacyrelationshipcommitment and it was hard. You really need to read the text, because there is a lot of random information in it for the tests. Really good information in it for life in general.
I really enjoyed this class and professor! I took Sociology of Gender with Prof. Barnett and it was an awesome class. Very interesting and informative. Tests and assignment directions were sometimes unclear, but she is very lenient on due dates. The test book is a must, and there are a lot of long, outside readings assigned.
Not helpful or clear. the study guides do not match the tests and there are random statistics you have to remember. Ive emailed her a handful of times regarding the feedback I've received and all she tells me is "read the syllabus. use the study guide. try to read my power point." never again!!! So stressful.
Cynthia's class is very interesting and I loved to take it. I did take it online and she kind of did take forever to respond back, but besides that the work is always easy and clear but the midterm had a little bit of time with a lot of questions. Besides that it was a great class.
Sociological analysis was not easy or the most interesting subject but if you have to take it, take it. Stay on top of everything, study, and participate a lot and you can pull off an A.
her quiz questions were very confusing and tricky. finals was 100 questions in 90 minutes 16 chapters. My GPA was 4.00, but she gave me a B. Now my GPA went down to 3.94. I made a terrible decision taking her class. Do not take her class. if you are an A student stay away and if you are a C student, don't even think about it, failure guaranteed!
For the passionate Soc Major:Do not be afraid to take this class. If you love sociology and take school seriously, read the reviews below with a grain of salt. This class is not easy, but it's doable. Follow up with Cynthia during office hours, she is your ally. Study for tests & quizzes! Work hard. Getting a good grade is on YOU, not Cynthia.
Sweet lady. But a bit unorganized. Definitely had to work for the grade. Study Guides are too broad, might as well just memorize the book.
she is the best!!! take her because she's the sweetest lady ever and her class is interesting and she makes you want to be there. she's so caring and i would take any of her other classes in a heartbeat.
More hw than a 5 unit course. She wants you to read her lecture 10-30 pg's, an article 25-30 pg's, the chapter, comment with 2 replies, a video, a quiz, and the occasional paper EVERY week. Exams are 100 q's because 50 is not enough. And, an 8 pg research paper worth only 100 points, similar pp's are worth a couple 100 & count 4 an exam.
This was a great class. Lots of interesting information learned. Participation in weekly discussions are a must, plus you get to know your classmates. Some group projects. Note that some assignments were graded slowly. I would take another class from this instructor.
She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Only take this class if you are an A student. Lots of work. You need to completely grasp concepts to do well on tests. If you attend class, do the work, and study, you can pull of an A.
I really enjoyed this class, it's important to read to do well on the quizzes and the midterm and final but the text is really interesting. Everything I learned from this class was beneficial to my life, everything is relevant. Cynthia also gives so many opportunities to contact her through chats, email. etc. A great online class!!
Lovely Lady, but her lectures are very boring. She seemed very unorganized, and took ages giving back grades and essays. Her study guides are very broad, just memorize the whole textbook for exams.
Professor Barnett was not efficient in her lectures. She spent too long talking and it was a lot of reading articles that didn't really count for anything. You could study the study guide front to back word for word and barely pass the test. She didn't put out the final study guide until 3 days before the final. Glad she's retiring.
I was nervous to take this class because of previous reviews, but I enjoyed the class and didn't find it to be that challenging. Just go to class, learn the material, study and you'll be fine!!
I took her online course. I loved this class! Such interesting material. Yes, you have to read the chapters in the book in order to pass her exams. My only complaint is that we had to do 2 group projects & that was difficult to do with the class being an online only course. Barnett was well organized and made sure she was available to students.
I thought this class was so easy. Do the work and you will pass. I made flashcards out of her quizzes and used them for the final. I didn't do so well on the midterm and it ended up making my grade a B so i emailed her and asked for an A in the class and she gave it to me because my research essay was really good. So ask if you are close to an A.
Not what I expected! Her PowerPoints need to be redone. Her images are covering the text and on some slides the text go beyond the slide and I cant see what it says. Final exam has a lot of random questions plus she only gives you 75 mins for 50 questions but for quizs she gives 2 hours for 10 questions for less. Stranger
She will doc you point on your discussion or homework for bad grammar, spelling, punctuation. For test shes a concept professor make sure you understand the terms, also pay attention to statistics. There was 3 group projects, and some quizzes questions will be on midterm or final. questions on test can trick you so pay attention and read carefully
I forgot to add if you are going to take her class she will respond to you when you need her, if you need her help she will try but she just confuses things, make sure when you are going to take your final or midterm you UNDERSTAND the concepts. She dose not give you any idea of what to expect on midterm or final.
In my opinion: She is by no means a bad or hard professor, but at the same time she is not great or easy. Her is exactly what the average college class would look like. There is only one group project and it's not based on anything we learn. Does it have to do with society? No. Does it have to do with any terms we learn? No. besides that she is G
She is not clear with her grading criteria, although she will help, she will doc points for improper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Her midterm test and final have a few questions as the quizzes. She will give you 2 hours for 5 question quizzes, but 1 hour for midterm and Final because of her class I did not get a 4.0
I was so excited to take this course, but in the first discussion, I could tell it would be challenging because of the professor. Very tough grader, assigns multiple group projects, and her exams and quizzes feel like they are meant to confuse you. She provides little information on what both the midterm or final will focus on. Don't expect an A.
Her test are meant to confuse you, she is a hard grader, she will not tell you whats to expect on the final, shes a heads up learn the concept and the statistics. I was very excited for this class oh well. I learned nothing.
DONT TAKE HER CLASS
Hi y'all. So I am usually really good in school, but this professor is so boring and I regret taking this class. PLEASE listen to me now when I say don't take a SOC class with this lady. It'll be hell.
Shows up 5 minutes before every class unprepared, expects class to stay 10 minutes after because she talks too long, racist and sexist teacher. Would not recommend
I took SOC M04 over a 14-week course online. I actually had to drop out of it because I felt like it was a much harder sociology class than I was looking for. The textbook is required but there are no free versions, trust me I have looked! She is a sweet professor but I feel like you can find an easier professor!
This professor is completely unprofessional she teaches this class based on opinion Should not have a platform whatsoever. The blatant disregard for science and basic biology is astounding The fact this teacher believes in 60+ genders and teaches that is disturbing. She will fail you if you believe in science or biology Truly sad.
Do not take her class ESPECIALLY if you're not particularly into reading a TON. IF there is a lecture that she has posted its very short (10-15 mins) and the rest is on you reading practically bible size articles. Would rather have a teacher that posts 2 hour lectures then try to read the material provided and do her quizzes and discussion posts.
Professor Barnett was very accessible outside of class and I felt very supported by her as a student. The class itself was pretty easy and straightforward, and really inspired me to learn more about sociology. Some assignments were unnecessary, like the group project, but each assignment was very simple.
She was very sweet and understanding. There is a lot of reading but if you space things out and maintain a good schedule you will be fine. People are so dramatic!! Don't listen to the bad ratings they are just slow. It's one of the easiest classes I've ever taken and I am in high school. (Dual enrollment)
This class was a struggle. The professor relied heavily on dense readings and short lectures. Utilize unstuck study and the textbook to stay on top of the content. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
Intro to Soc (18w): 3-4 assignments & 1 quiz/week. Quizzes are easy & quick. Assignments are time-consuming, but simple. 1 graded paper, 1 extra credit reflection paper on a comic book (They Called Us Enemy). Final is cumulative but easy. Grading is slow. As a dual enrollment student, I found it very easy, so don't let the other reviews scare you.
very sweet person but makes the subject difficult to understand. she expects you to know vocab and definitions the minute they are mentioned, but only assigned a few things and had two group exams. not a difficult class, but a slightly dreaded one.
