She likes more theory than problem solving, however the exams do obviously contain problems. She drops the worst exam, bonus, and will scale if needed. The exams are easy if you pay attention to what is important from lecture.
Really Sweet Lady, TIP: STUDY HER NOTES AND GO TO CLASS...IF U READ THE BOOK AND DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS YOU WILL FAIL... EXAMS ARE ALL ON HER LECTURE NOTHING FROM BOOK ***
If you can go home and make sense of what she says in lecture, you will succeed in this class. She is insecure and it shows. She is rude to students, doesn't answer their questions, puts down her TAs, offers the course material in a bewildering manner, and gets flustered when students ask questions. If you want to teach yourself, take this class.
she definitely knows the material but has a problem explaining it to the class. it was a very easy class though.
She is very knowledgable. Hard to follow at times because she can be scatter brained, however if you take notes from her prepared slides and pay attention to the problems she gives in class you can do very well.
She definitely wants her students to succeed. She is a good teacher because she really takes her time explaining everything. Very nice woman.
dosen't know how to explain in class, if you can't take tests, you won't do well
Really nice woman, but her notes can be everywhere and she sometimes goes off topic. Teaches up till the last minute. She doesn't take attendance, but her notes help a ton. Not too hard if you study.
Hard class, but she does well with teaching it. Explains all concepts thoroughly and always reviews before "quizes". Very nice woman, and pretty funny. She loves what she teaches, and you can definatly tell.
You have to go to class! If you go to class (and pay attention), go over your notes you can do well. If you have a hard time with a concept, go talk to her. She is always in her office and ready to help. Organic Chemistry is her "thing," she loves it and she loves to teach it. But YOU have to go to class and pay attention to do well
Class is easy if you study. Just go to class, learn the concepts and practice problems you should easily get an A. There were many students in her class who got above 100 as their average.
She is definately one of my favorite teachers so far. She truly wants her students to do well and is always available to help. Just go to her class every day, pay attention and study your notes. she breaks things down to make it even easier to understand and is more than happy to help anyone that needs it.
What a Great Professor!! I have to admit i was nervous taking this class b/c it had been a LONG time since i had seen a chem book! But on the 1st day of class, my fears were gone. Prof Brittain is excited & passionate about her subject & she really wants ALL her students to succeed. It is very evident in her teaching and her style that she cares.
Awesome Professor!! If you have to take CHM 124 & don't have a choice in the matter -she's a great prof for this class!! She is passionate about chem and she wants her students to succeed! I don't think i would have passed this class if it wasn't for her teaching style and her concern for the students at URI.
She is a really good teacher. she looks out for her students, makes sure we do well and is available a lot for extra help. She presents the material in a great way. I took chem 103 with her would totally suggest her and the class, especially if you need it for your major.
Not very clear. notes scattered a very hard class!
103 is NOT a hard class. Honestly, She is a great teacher and presents material very well. It's a little sloppy, but as long as you can follow along you'll do fine. She has very good intentions for her students..so basically if a student fails it's their own fault because she does a great job teaching the class. I look forward to having her again.
Eh. Not that great. Her notes are nearly illegible, and sometimes when students ask questions, she makes them feel completely stupid. Beneath the surface though, she does want students to succeed, she just comes across different than that. Better than Bruno, i hear.
Brittain is amazing! this class is wicked easy. dont bother buying the book. all you need is her notes which i thought were perfectly legible. she gives you old exam questions and other packets which are really helpful.
okayyyyyyy
she was really helpful with hard material. always tells jokes.
Had her for both 103 and 124. Best Chemistry teacher at URI. Always willing to help, very passionate about Chem, and makes Chemistry jokes that are kinda funny too. Do not miss one day of her lecture. She tells you straight from day one to come to class, read the chapter, do end of chapter problems, review notes and you will have no problem.
Great teacher and an easy class. Very good at explaining things and has many help sessions to further your learning. Don't use the text too much because she has online assignments that are sooo easy and help out your grade.
Bottem line..this class is HARD. For it being as hard as it was I felt Brittain was the best one to take it with. (especially after 103 with dane) GO TO EVERY CLASS. U miss one day and youll miss an entire concept. She gives u old test questions which are really helpful. She makes silly chem jokes too. Overall I liked her a lot but the class sucks
Hilarious...absolutely love this woman, she is not extremely clear when she speaks but her skills summaries and old exam questions mixed in with the aris is like a godsent...she really tries to make sure her students understand--definitely get her for any chem
Brittain is the best chem teacher i have ever had. She explains every concept so well and goes over tons of example problems that all show up on the exams. She posts summaries of the chapters and old exams online. I understand chemistry much better after taking it from her and i got an A
Hardest class ever, but she teaches pretty well
soooo easy!! and sooo helpful! she grades like 125/100, so you always have a chance of >100%. she gives lots of links to help you study, goes over anything in class you might have trouble with, shes awesome (a good uri chem prof!? no way!!)
information was hard, but she gives so many extra problems to help you study. also, if you have an a on all the exams and quizzes, she won't make you take the final which was great. go to every class, print out the skills summaries, and STUDY. her door is always open, and she is very helpful. i HATED chem in high school- this class was much easier
Brittain is the best professor I have had at URI. She was very involved in her teaching and tries very hard to get students to understand. She spends a lot of time explaining, and she explains well. Chemistry can be a hard subject. Brittain is very likable. Her notes will help you
This should be a relatively easy class as long as you study. Brittain sets it up so that you'll want to keep up with the work in order to pass pop quizzes. She gives you a lot of online resources, including chapter summaries and practice problems. Don't expect to get an A, or even a B without cracking open the book or using the resources. Take her.
Relatively easy class, however Brittain is extremely boring and unreliable. Didn't even finish correcting our last exam before the final (she had two weeks to correct it). Very disappointing.
She's annoying, doesn't really explain things that well and always assumes that everyone knows whats up, totally tried to cram in as much info in as little time as possible and her final was impossibly long and hard. I probably won't pass without a scale and believe me, I study hard
I had her this past semester. I had heard she was good but she gave ridiculously difficult quizzes, I didn't like her teaching style (she taught through only examples and I need theory). She never finished the last topic and I never got my last exam back- we took it 2+ weeks before the final. unfortunately the whole chem dpt is weak
I had Park for CHM 103 and barely made it out alive but then switched to Brittain for CHM 124 and she made me fell in love with chemistry. the first week she reteaches basic chem and this is how i learned what Park didn't teach me. Brittain's tests are alittle difficult but are managable. She teaches very clear. Go to SI Sessions!!!
BETTER THAN GELDART! She takes all the info from txtbk and makes her own study guide/summary so just know all the info from that. If you go to classes daily and pay attention, you should be fine. For exams, just read carefully and read every little details. Brittains great professor.
I heard she was an amazing teacher so I took her for 124 and was extremely dissapointed. She never gave us back our grades for Exam 3, or Final Exam and said she wouldn't give C-'s and then gave them out. Chem 124 is a hard subject, but she got so fed up with days off at the end of the year she stopped being nice and made our lives hell.
A tough class overall, but will explain things if you go ask her. Cares about the subject and wants to teach it to you. Study and do practice exams. And go to her office hours.
A very, very good teacher, she made me love chemistry for the first time in my life. i took chem 103 and 124, i would take her again and again.go to her office for help and you will get the best of her, also go to si session, her old exam questions plus attending lectures will give you a decent grade.
Cracked the book open once. Her notes, her class, and the online homework were all that was needed for studying. Great teacher, very clear. Only really cares about nursing and nutrition students though.
Really good professor-she actually cares about students succeeding and learning! TA has SI sessions twice a week. She posts soo much useful information on sakai and her website for practice/studying.Has a chat room she responds to even late at night!if you don't take advantage of the resources she gives students then its your own fault if you fail!
good teacher but you need to be in class to do well on tests. also SI sessions are very helpful
Online assignments are crucial to your success, as is class attendance. Class is easy if all assignments are completed and class sessions as well.
I had Brittain for chem 103 and now again for organic. She is VERY helpful. She really loves what shes taking about and it helps. She holds SI sessions twice a week to get more practice and one on one time with a teacher. Never used the book. Definately recommend he if your worried about Chem.
Very friendly, very helpful, but she is very fast-paced in her lectures. You have to really pay attention, take lots of notes, and studying is a definite. Attend the SI sessions and compete online assignments.
Awesome professor. Explains things perfectly. Never though I would understand ORGO, but thanks to her, I've found I love it!
Explains things perfectly. Never though I would understand ORGO, but thanks to her, I've found I love it!
Dr. Brittain cares a lot for her students and is willing to help in any way she can. She's a fantastic teacher, you don't see many like her anymore. If you need help, go to her. Her office hours are very flexible. You do need to study in order to pass the course but she is clear. Go to lecture and attend SI sessions and you'll be fine. She's great!
She's great! There aren't many like her. She's willing to help her students when they come to her. She's very clear during lecture. Take her if you get the opportunity to. She is tough and you do have to put the effort in but you will learn a lot. She's a great teacher. Absolutely love her class and her jokes! Fantastic teacher :)
I had a really tough time with this course. Not going to lie, it is extremely hard and one of the hardest classes I've taken. You must go see her right away if your struggling! She is extremly helpful and truly cares about her students! She completely changed my views on organic chemistry. Awesome teacher!!
Took her summer class, so we went fast. I would go to her office after class for extra understanding. she would always be more than kind enough to help me for as long as i needed. she uses online hw so that will boost the grade. she is hard but you will understand the topic.
Cares a lot about her students, but she used this "Intro" class in the complete opposite way. She expected you to know a lot of stuff already that she didn't go over. And when she goes over things she beats them to death & tells you 50 different ways to do a problem, trying to help, but it makes things more confusing. Didn't use the book once.
She could teach my dog chemistry. Honestly though, easy class, explains things 1000x so you're a pro by the end of the semester. Didn't use the text. Attend all the lectures and do the OWL stuff for an easy A.
Good teacher. Really need to take advantage of the resources she gives you, like practice problems and SI sessions. If you do that you will get a good grade.
I really liked her as a teacher and chem was my hardest class as a freshman. She was really helpful and made me not hate chemistry. She provides a lot of opportunities to do well
The class was not too hard, especially if you go to class. She is good at explaining concepts to make them easy to understand and really cares about the subject. Only bad thing is that she is kind of mean when you approach her.
I felt as if this professor was all over the place and not very organized. Her tests were hard and she is very confusing. Not very friendly when you approach her for help.
Dr. Brittain is obviously very passionate about chemistry and I appreciate that. However, there is a lot of work involved in the course including skills checks, owl assignments, and a workbook. I recommend taking this course only if you are fully committed or interested in chemistry with a lot of time on your hands.
Pretty much failed; worst teacher at least for me. She writes on printer paper and pretty much rambles so it's hard to get the information you need. Tests are extremely tough and unless you understand it or ask for help, you won't pass.
If you go to class and pay attention you will do fine. Dr. Brittain is very helpful and wants her students to understand the material so if you don't understand, ask a question.
Amazing professor. She made and taught from a packet of condensed notes from the textbook, and is an extremely clear lecturer regarding what you need to know and how to do it. Lots of old exams and practice problems. Helpful one-on-one, goes over problems in class, and when emailed a question, she posts the answer online for everyone to see.
Dr. Brittain is one of the best professors in the chemistry department. She will explain anything you don't understand. She encourages participation, and lectures using condensed notes she makes. She directly tells you what you need to know for the exams. Tests are hard if you don't study. If you know your stuff, her class is easy.
Honestly would never take her again for chemistry. She is goes to fast and isn't helpful when you go to get help. She is very nice but I know a good amount of people that failed. So if you can take another teacher, do it while you still can because chemistry fills up fast and if you wait to switch teachers you probably won't be able too.
The class is a lot of work but she gives you plenty opportunities to succeed. A lot of extra credit and resources to help you do well on exams, which are difficult but manageable if you put in the time and effort. Skills book is extremely important and I recommend her office hours, she's really helpful if you go to see her.
WOW this class is hard, even after putting 100% of hardwork, she is a good professor it is easy to understand her in class but her grading and exams make me feel like am in a PHD class, lot of extra credit but she is a very touch grader u lose point for every little mistake you have to be a professional in chem to pass her class with a good grade
She's great at explaining & making hard concepts seem easy. The tests aren't too hard just lengthy. She doesn't have a way of taking attendance but missing a lecture really puts you behind.
The skills book given to you for CHM 103 and CHM 124 has the worst organization I have ever seen. She will literally never give you the answer to any practice questions nor will she answer your emails or forum posts on Sakai. Everyone is left to rely on each others answers but no one even knows if they are right.
80% OF YOUR GRADE IS FROM TESTS. Fail one and you're done. She provides practice tests BUT NOT THE ANSWERS. HOW DO I KNOW IF IM DOING ANYTHING RIGHT??!!!?? Im writing this in the middle of a mental breakdown so maybe I'm biased but honestly save yourself.
I was excited to take Professor Britain because I had heard great things about her. However, he lectures are so unorganized and can't finish one thought before starting another- super frustrating. Only engages the few kids in the front few rows that always say they understand something when in reality nobody has clue. Doesn't curve grades at all.
Ok orgo is just a hard class in general, but Brittain doesn't make it any better. Yekta scales the overall class by 8 points while Brittain does nothing. She has no power points and is completely disorganized during lecture. She thinks CHM 124 is "childs-play" it may be for her, but MANY student drown in her class and she does not care.
I took this class upon hearing that she was the BEST prof to take orgo with. I have come to find that this is COMPLETELY FALSE. She is completely disorganized and has difficulty finishing a problem from start to finish. There is no scale in her class, unlike Yetka's class. She also does not have powerpoint's and is a complete mess.
Dr. Brittain is the single most amazing person in the Chemistry department at URI. She is brilliant, helpful, caring, and made me fall in love with organic chemistry. The class itself requires a lot of hard work if you want to do well, but she gives tons of extra credit opportunities and is very helpful outside of class. Best professor ever!!
She is one of my favorite professors in the world. Everyone says that organic chemistry is difficult, but she makes it so much easier to understand. It honestly isn't as difficult as everyone makes it seem. Going to lectures really helps because she doesn't do powerpoints, she just does practice problems, which helps on the exams.
Orgo is one of the hardest classes i have ever taken. BUT Brittain 100% makes this class passable. Although textbook is not required, reading it helps. Also, just stay up to date with all the OWLS she assigns-- it's a lot, but kinda helps. She is so helpful in office hours. You need to put the time into this class in order to get a good grade.
Don't bother buying the textbook its never used at all. you learn the material before class through Sakai and OwlV2 and she teaches very slowly in her lectures. Every test is based off the practice tests that are in the Skills Book (which you definitely should buy), the tests are fair, when it comes to grading she gives a lot of partial credit.
Honestly not a bad professor. She requires you to learn the material before class through pre-lectures on Sakai and skills check. Do the online work it really boosts your grade. A lot of material is covered and her lectures don't help much. Go to office hours or a weekly study group. To study, do the old exams in the skills book.
Brittain is the best professor I have ever had. She makes organic chemistry so much better and truly cares about her students. She frequently uses the skills book and will give you feedback if you take one of her practice exams. She tries her best to take questions & really prepares students for exams. 10/10 would recommend, amazing woman!
Professor Brittain isn't the worst but she is far from the best. She teaches as though everyone already knows the subject, and gets frustrated when us "peasants" don't understand her methods.
Prof. Brittain is an extremely nice person. She knows what she is doing and knows the material that she is teaching. The only bad part of her class would be the amount of pre-lecture work and assignments that need to be completed for this class. Homework for the class is located in three different spots and you do way more online than in class.
As a professor she always encouraged people to visit her on her office hours, reviewed questions from exams with the class, and would go through any problem you ask during lecture. I enjoyed the skills book and the practice she gave us, but I didn't like how I could rarely check my answers to make sure I was doing everything right.
You will hear people say how amazing Prof. Brittain is but I am not sure where people get these ideas from. She does not teach in class. The structure of her "lectures" are sporadic and unhelpful. She puts online videos up for homework and expects you to learn from a screen. Office hours are helpful but I shouldn't have to be there everyday to pass
Biggest issue is she does not provide answers for her homework problems. Not sure if you are doing problems correctly. Her response is "use the student forum and I do not have the time to provide the answers." First, I am paying you to teach, not other students and second, it's your job!!! You are too busy to do you job?? Unacceptable!
Cynthia Brittain is a BRILLIANT woman, don't get me wrong, but she does NOT know how to teach. If you know the subject matter you may be okay, but that isn't for sure. Lectures are VERY unorganized, she is hard to follow. Tests are 80% of grade, HW barely correlates to exam. ALSOshe frequently reminded our class how we were her lower priority class
Dr. Graham uses a very hands-on teaching style in lecture that can catch some people off guard (she does not teach using slides). I found this to be a very efficient way to teach orgo though, since it helps you see the reactions you are learning about more clearly than if they were on a slide. She's very nice and wants everyone to do well.
Great teacher! The skill book is the bible. If you feel comfortable with the practice exams then you can ace the tests because they are almost identical. Pay attention in class, do OWL and the skills check and you don't need to do any extra work to get a good grade.
OK teacher, does a lot of examples in class but you need to look at the information and learn about it before class or you will be lost.. The main reason for this rating is that I found her very annoying, something about her voice and teaching style really grinded my gears. Not a hard class but probably the most annoying teacher Ive ever had.
I think she is a GREAT professor and I wouldn't have passed without her. She does all the examples/writing by hand in class and I copy it all down with her and then later rewrite the notes and it helps me understand SO much. She's great with help/office hours/email too! CHM124 is a hard class but she makes it so much better. Explains things so well
This professor does not answer emails and it was if she didn't even exist for this class. There were five exams two parts each which were exceptionally difficult with the circumstances. She is very inconsistent with the times she opens the exams. The class was not meant to be online, but due to corona, all summer classes were made this way.
I end up going to therapy after having her as a professor. She is the worst. She doesn't teach all she does is tell you to read the book. Organic chemistry is hard but she made it harder.
Dont pay attention to previous reviews; Dr. Graham is a great professor. As someone who struggled to get a C in gen chem 1 &2 I was afraid to take this class. If you do the homework, pay attention, and use the skills book she provides you can definitely get an A if you put in the work. Dont be afraid of this class or professor graham!
CHM 124 itself is a hard class but I feel that this professor taught it in a way that I was able to understand. There was a lot of homework but it definitely helped my grade so I was fine with it. I would take a class with her again.
you will not pass this class without going to quentin's extra help sessions just do it i swear
