Take her for stats! She teaches the class like high school, with homework due once a week, but it really helps learn stats. You need to keep practicing to get it. Her tests are straightforward and she explains everything very well.
She was an amazing professor. She did everything possible to teach the material as clear and concise as possible and she really was interested in helping students. She's also a really easy person to talk to. The work load and the level of difficulty is extremely fair.
I learned so much in this class. She prepared me SO well for upper level psychology classes.
Very caring and understanding. Overall tough, but fair.
Pretty good teacher, usually enthusiastic. For her quizes, just showing up to class and paying attention is enough. For tests, make sure you read the chapter! Overall, if you do that, tests are cookie-cutter - easy A.
I love Dr. Hoffman! I had her for Stats which I never would have gotten the hang of if I had had another prof. It's a lot of work and she is much harder than other professors, but again, you really come out of the class knowing the information!!
tricky questions. boring lectures. but easy, very easy.
Easy A if you do the work.
Read the book and take the notes and you'll be fine. She's not out to make you fail, she actually wants you to succeed in her class. Her lectures are well organized and she keeps them fairly entertaining.
I thought that she was easily one of my favorite professors from my freshmen year. She really made the effort to make the material as comprehensible as possible. Easy tests if you put in the effort to study all the material
Dr. Hoffman is an excellent professor I ever met. She can always use her unique methods to make hard knowledge easier to study. I really appreciate her!
Does a great job of teaching and while making the subject suitably challenging.
She was an excellent professor. Very interesting lectures and always a lot of fun to talk to out of class. I would recommend her to anyone!
This professor is amazing. She challenges you at just the right rate and level. She is very helpful, clear, and well organized. I hated statistics before her class. By the end of the semester, I was getting an A felt confident, and wanted to learn more.
Extremely passionate teacher. Makes this introductory class engaging and interesting.
I had her for Psychology 101. She was a decent teacher, class wasn't hard at all. However, she sometimes brought her personal political views into the classroom at irrelevant times. She's a member of the PFC. Beware!
I love her!!! I had her for P155 and she was great in that too. She knows exactly what she's doing, and she makes sure that you're actually LEARNING the material. She cares about her students, and though she brings her political views into the classroom at times, it's interesting. I highly recommend her!
Very good at teaching the material so that you learn and understand it. Tests are pretty fair and not really any homework which makes tests very important. Only knock on her is that she treats students like they are 12 yrs old. Otherwise a solid class.
Dr. Hoffman is a good teacher. I tried to take Stats with Guth, but did not understand his teaching and was not learning anything. I actually learned a lot from Dr. Hoffman. She's hard - there's a lot of homework and you have to stay caught up for every class - but you'll actually learn statistics. I'm glad I took it with her.
Maybe if I wanted to spend an extraordinary amount of time learning statistics, this would of been a great class. But when all you want to do is fulfill a Statistics requirement- do not take this class. You will spend more time than you ever wanted to.
I've had her for 101, and 199. Great professor. Pay attention and she won't have to do that thing where she stands there not talking until everyone else does. :) I've heard she's really good at teaching stats too, which a requirement for me, so I'll be returning a third time I think!
Very nice and always willing to help/clarify. The book she provides is great because you take your notes right in it. Very helpful! She makes you memorize definitions, but if you're willing to sit down the night before and just memorize them, you'll do fine. It's worth it to have a prof who likes teaching and uses interesting examples, etc.
very helpful class and teacher. She really helps you plan out your future with all the guest speakers. I definitely learned a lot, but I admit this class is annoying. not because of anything she does wrong, but because the assignments can take a little while, but they are helpful.
Her lecturing style is difficult to keep up with. You take notes using a packet she made up with blanks/ problems that you're supposed to fill in lecture, but she speeds through them and flips back and forth between pgs mid-problem. Homework is WAY too time consuming! Exam m.c. questions can be really ambiguous. Makes material harder than necessary
Great professor, the class can seem boring at times while other parts are exciting. It just matters what you're interested in. Exams are very difficult, so prepare a ton!
At first she seems like a witch, but then you realize she just has a burning desire for her course and wanting you to learn it. If you read the assigned chapters and really study the reader, then you will pass. Class is nothing but memorization. Doesn't give extra credit. No hw. Fun and sorta easy but hafta keep up on reading and memorizing.
Helpful to my future career; annoying class but it did help. Must attend 8 classes throughout the semester and complete 6 (I think) assignments in order to pass, but as long as you do that its okay. Straightforward, and easy to complete but worthless since it doesn't actually count towards GPA.
First--she makes you purchase a packet for her class that she put together which is very hard to follow in class. She isn't clear when explaining material. This class should be very easy and she made it harder than it should be.
I thought she was great teacher. She's really passionate about what she's teaching. Go to class and read and it's fine. The only thing I hated was how many definitions we had to know word for word on tests. Overall a great class though.
She is extremely boring. Her voice is soooo annoying. And she is inflexible. She is not the worst but certainly not the best one.
She is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are clear and engaging, with time to ask ?s and repeat material. She has a passion for what she does, and she really cares about students doing well. About those who have given bad reviews- I'd be curious to see how often they study and visit office hours. Those who try in the class have no need to complain.
Really clear, loves what she teaches about, not the easiest class but you will learn a lot if you read and go to class and pay attention! Quizzes are kind of annoying because so low in points but you must put in a lot of effort.
I'm sure it's a great class if you put a lot of effort into the assignments, but if you aren't willing to you would probably do better to take 199 from someone else. You'll get the same stuff out of it and have to do a lot less work. Wrote more for this class than my 4-credit intensive writing course.
Professor Hoffman is extremely knowledgeable about psychology and provides interesting lectures. She expects alot concerning reading and taking your own notes, and requires exact definitions on essay portions of exams, but she is completely willing to help you earn a top grade.
Found the class needlessly difficult for an intro course. I never mind working hard in a class within my major but the tedious study guides, random assignments, and exams that consisted of word for word definitions made it seemed designed to be a weed-out class. That being said she knows her stuff and is a great lecturer, but be warned, tough class
Absolutely the worse professor to take this class with if you have any idea of what you want to do with your life. She has a LOT of things to say, all of which could be summarized to about 2 classes. Teaches as if she is teaching an elementary school class, but gives and UNBELIEVABLY large amount of work.
HORRIBLE! Take P199 from anyone else! This 1 credit pass/fail class had more writing than my English and Chemistry (lab reports) combined. I thought this class would be helpful in discovering my interests to decide on a career, but she wants you to know the career you will pursue by week 3.
Very intelligent and engaging teacher, but very difficult tests.
I learned what I needed to know to prepare for my career just in time. Dr. Hoffman does make the class a lot of work, but if you have a pretty good idea what you want to do, the assignments are genuinely helpful in figuring out the specifics and how to prepare. If it had been easier, I wouldn't have learned as much.
Her lecture and book are informative, but she expects way too much from students. The last month of class has more work than essentially the rest of the semester. She's like that in every class I've taken with her. Exams are ambiguous and VERY difficult. Weekly packets & quizzes, a report, and 3 projects. I'd recommend taking a different professor.
Fantastic! Made course easy to understand and applicable to degree program. Very helpful too!
It is very clear that she is well educated, and is passionate about teaching the topic. She keeps the class interesting, and uses an appropriate amount of student interaction for discussions. Being a psychology professor however, she was not at all helpful and compassionate when it came to my brief hospitalization, and did not help me one bit.
Awful! Absolutely no flexibility. Most annoying teacher I've ever had. Work load is crazy and if you miss an assignment you have to do that assignment and an additional assignment to pass. Absolutely ridiculous and unhelpful if you already have a plan for your future. A proactive student would never need this class, especially with her.
work load is a lot for a one credit class but not hard to BS papers (honestly most people tried too hard on them and overreact; if you work hard on them fine, if you don't, you'll still pass). she is extremely good at what she does though and knows what she's talking about when it comes to preparation.
The assignments are fairly long for a one credit class, just a warning. However, some of the later papers are really helpful in getting research done in your field of interest, and aren't as bad as they seem at first. Her lectures are quite boring, but you only need to attend 10 classes to pass. I wouldn't bother buying the textbook.
The most annoying teacher I've ever had. Cannot stand her lectures but had to suffer through 10 of them. Had to write over 9000 words, or over 30 pages, just to pass this worthless 1 credit class. This took time away from my other five classes that count toward my GPA and actually MATTER. Don't buy textbook it is also worthless and you don't use it
While the work load was pretty lengthy, she was very helpful. The class certainly gives you perspective on where you are or where you need to be. She is one of the nicest professors I have encountered.
Makes you do a TON of work for a 1-credit class and you need a certain number of attendance credits to pass. Had to force myself to go to class because it was so annoying. She's a big fan of making you talk to your neighbors and calls you out if you don't. Sit in the back.
Great stats teacher. She assigns a lot of homework and projects, but they all help with tests. Moves quickly and goes really in depth during class, but really works with you outside of class time if you need it. Challenging class, but teaches you a ton about stats in psych!! All helpful applicable concepts!
Professor Hoffman was great. You don't buy a textbook, you buy a ringed notebook from Mr. Copy that is basically a textbook with blanks and examples for you to fill in. She goes through it page by page. She signs A LOT of homework, but it honestly helps so much. She's a great professor and it's an easy A if you pay attention and try on homework.
This class isn't very helpful if you already know what you want to do with your life but if you don't it should be helpful. A lot of busy work and many papers but none of them are hard, just very time consuming. I sat in class and watched Netflix and participated in clicker questions when needed. All work is pretty much done outside of class.
This class has a lot of homework, but it's homework that helps you understand the material. Lectures are straight forward. There's no textbook, just a work book to take notes in. The quizzes are easy and the tests are exactly like the assignments. If you go to class and do the homework, you'll do well. One of the easiest stats classes at IU.
Great professor, loved the class. She's very knowledgable.
She sounds like she's crying when she talks. Wouldn't take a class with her again. For P199, need to attend 8 classes and complete 6 assignments. Super simple class. Pass/Fail grading.
Instead of helping me through anxiety, she asked me to consider how the stress of the class was effecting the rest of my life. I made the mistake of getting flustered and dropping the class. I could have done it with a little support.
Professor Patton is excellent for PY155 if you're really looking to learn all of the basic concepts of psychology in a single semester. I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures. She wants you to pass! The course is easy to pass as long as you attend lectures and read/take notes over the textbook. As a neuroscience major, I highly recommend this class.
This class was a huge eye-opener. I highly recommend taking it in your sophomore year, or freshman if you have a good idea of what you want to do with your professional life. Cynthia clearly knows her stuff and is a very good professor to have a rapport with, especially for references on grad school apps or RA apps. Don't be daunted by paper length
For P199, since it's a pass/fail class, you have to receive all assignment credits and all attendance credits. Class is only ONCE EVERY OTHER WEEK. If you miss class or don't turn in an assignment, you can attend an event through the career center and just have someone sign a paper, and there are alternative assignments. The assignments are long.
Prof is great but her structure for this class is ridiculous. If you do an assignment wrong/turn it in late you have to redo it PLUS do another assignment usually a 2 page paper. She's knowledgeable and great, but the class is time consuming. Makes you buy a $70 clicker just for a few chat questions in class that she barely even looks at.
Worst professor I've had so far in college. She almost failed me because of one assignment and then wouldn't tell me what I did wrong or how to fix it so I could pass. Pretentious about grammar, rarely checks emails, not at all helpful.
Dr. Patton was super nice but you get what you'd expect from a 1 credit hour required course, so it was boring. It was INCREDIBLY time consuming for a class graded pass/fail, and if you miss an assignment, you have to do that assignment plus another to pass for the one assignment. More time consuming than any 3 cr. hour class I took this semester.
Overly complicated for a pass/fail class that is merely to help students development their future career skills. The professor was helpful overall but the amount of homework and bizarre rules regarding their submission made this class rather unbearable.
Very unhelpful and rude when it comes to asking questions, even when were entirely her fault (i.e., she forgot to post the link to a video). The assignments are unnecessarily long and tedious, and feel like pointless busy work. Class is a waste of time, as she plays music and the programs she uses crash just about every single class.
Says "Right??" after everything she says, is very rude and unhelpful when responding to emails, class is redundant and pointless unless you know literally nothing about the workforce, criteria for assignments are super ambiguous, unable to miss even one class/assignment, literally hated this class and would avoid the professor at all costs.
This class was extremely unorganized and was difficult to follow at most times. Students were expected to know deadlines and understand what she wanted without her actually relaying the information to them. I often felt like I was being talked down to, and I never felt as though I could ask a question. If taking this as an elective, don't.
Did not say a single important thing the entire semester I took her class. Attendance was mandatory, so I showed up every single time, and every single time she wasted my time by talking extensively about ideas that are common sense. Ex: Transferable skills are important, having a degree in psychology doesn't mean you need a job in psych, etc.
Absolutely way too much work for such an insignificant, 1 credit hour class. Class is mandatory, but the information she gives is such common sense. She provides some helpful links and websites in the first couple classes, but after that, the classes are pointless to attend. Assignments too detailed, the deadlines aren't clearly communicated
I'm a senior and she is the worst professor I have ever had. She talks to you like you are stupid. If you take this class as anything other than a freshmen she makes you feel stupid and just wastes time. This is a required class that requires a new teacher. Hard grader for a 1 credit with so many long assignments that do not help. SHE NEEDS TO GO.
I really like this professor, she explains things very well and takes her time teaching us. There is a lot of reading, but do it because it is very helpful!
Assignments are much too difficult and extensive for a pass/fail class. Her idea of makeup work is whole different assignments on top of the original, and sometimes deadlines do not matter because she can tell you it was not to her liking and make you redo it. Consists of a ton of busy work and her telling you things you likely already know.
I PROMISE THIS CLASS IS NOT AS BAD AS SOME PEOPLE ON HERE SAY IT IS! Dr. Patton is amazing and I loved her. She made me want to minor in psych. Great teacher; she does a fantastic job at making sure we understand the material. You will get your moneys-worth for this class because she uses your TopHat code and the textbook frequently. Great lady.
Dr. Patton was awesome. She is such a sweet lady, gives great examples, and really knowledgable in her field. I will say, however, if you expect to take a first year psych class where you can barely show up or fail everything and still get an A, take Irene's class. Dr Patton's test are difficult, and there is a daily participation grade.
Her makeup assignments for my class were: Interview a professional and write 500 words about it, or a few different types of research papers w/ 1,000 words and 3 sources. This is by far one of the worst classes at IU. I forgot the first deadline and magically turned 3 teeny quizzes into 3 teeny quizzes and 3,000 words worth of essay with 9 sources.
Yikes. Avoid her at all costs for P199, although I think this may be the only instructor available for this course. Way too much work for a Pass/Fail, one credit course and lecture was extremely boring, I loathed going to it. Only plus side is she splits the class in half and you only have to go to class once every two weeks.
If it weren't for the daily participation grades, there would be absolutely no reason to go to lecture. If you do the readings, you'll be fine. Lectures consist of her reading off of the slides (that are posted after class) and telling stories from her experience. Nice lady, interesting, good for a funny joke/story every so often.
ALL OVER THE PLACE! This woman tries so hard to be organized but is incredibly far from it. Lectures are two weeks behind readings. TopHat/in class quiz questions do not have nearly enough time. To top it off, canvas assignments are very difficult to do well on. You will get a B in this class and you will like it. Wears very questionable shirts too
Unavailable to students & inconsiderate to situations that may be happening outside her class. Tests are the hardest psychology tests I've ever taken; with some being check all that apply & only 1 of them being the correct answer. Loves the sound of her own voice but makes no sense. Multiple chapters to read every night along with quizzes. 0/10
She explains statistics very well. Probably wouldnt have passed with a good grade under another professor.
Sweet lady but lectures are boring. Just reads off slides that she posts after, attendance is mandatory but there are ways to get around that (tophat from home). The textbook is online and there are quizzes that go along with it, time-consuming but not difficult. Just study and read and the exams are a breeze. Most quizzes are online (quizlet).
She talked down to students often and was not helpful when you had questions. There were online quizzes every week, often twice a week. Her exams also contain "choose one OR MULTIPLE" answers.. Not super available outside of class time
I did not really like the class and I think she was one of the reasons for it.
Dr. Patton's class was one of the most boring classes I have ever taken in my college career. Attendance in her excruciatingly slow lectures is unfortunately graded, so be sure to bring a coffee. Further, she assigns about 30 minutes of busywork homework for each lecture. Try to take with a different prof if possible, if only to keep your sanity.
The way she words her questions is so confusing. I had a few of my friends who had already taken stats look at the quizzes she was giving and we were all stumped at what she was asking in the questions. She doesn't tolerate students not understanding what she is asking. I reached out for help and she basically told me 'too bad'.
Dr. Patton is really understanding of student experiences and needs. Her "cushioning" is built into her syllabus, such as dropping the lowest 2 quiz scores and offering 3 late "tokens" to avoid a late-grade. As such, don't ask for further accommodations and make sure you understand the syllabus. Attendance is both mandatory and enjoyable.
one of the nicest professors I have ever had. attendance is mandatory or you wont pass the class. she was very understanding of outside circumstances when it came to assignments. she did her best to be politically correct and was very kind and considerate to all of her students. Would take any class with her again.
Sweetest lady ever. Although there is a LOT of work and time required for this class, as long as you complete the assignments, you will get an A in this class. I failed just about every exam, but still ended with an A because of all the assignments. The class was horrible (just like any stats)and lots of work, but worth it for the grade in the end.
Patton's transition onto online coursework (COVID) was the worst I have ever seen. Cynthia promised assignments would be posted early on Mondays and due on Fridays - however assignments were usually posted Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday night, and still due on Friday. The way she handled this class was unprofessional and she treated students unfair
I've been at IU for 4 years and she is by far the worst prof I've ever had. She is super unorganized and never posts modules until Monday or Tuesday. Syllabus took like 3 weeks to be posted. Super rude and will ask questions to the class and tell everyone they're wrong. She also said misogynistic things while talking about misogyny...
Professor Patton creates this class to be way harder than it needs to be. The weekly assignments are extremely long and time consuming. Exams are only 30 questions, which doesn't allow for much mistake. She does not except late/early work and never provides extra credit. Not very nice in general. Do not recommend!!
I feel like this professor has gone above and beyond for me in terms of helping me understand the class. She's strict and a tough grader, true, but if you put your all into it, she helps you understand and get better. She might not be for everyone, but for those who try their hardest and really want to learn, she really shines.
Syllabus way too content heavy for how short the exams are, discussion not welcome. I feel like I taught myself the entire semester with the use of the textbook and homework assignments. My class times were on Tuesdays & Thursdays and she'd make homework due Mon & Wed. Kind of silly and lack of consideration.
For such a great class like the Psychology of Women, I was very disappointed in how this class was taught. I wish the class was more discussion based considering that mostly only women took the course and we all can relate to the material. Exams were "fair game" but usually never related to the study guide or what was taught in class.
There is a level of professional trust you should have between a student and teacher. I received an A on an assignment and she went back to lower my grade after she graded it. I made the changes (which were incredibly small) and she refused to raise my grade back up. The W was worth it to not have to put up with her.
Dr. Patton's lectures are pretty boring and there are multiple assignments due typically 3 times a week. I actually liked the structure of the online modules, they taught me more than going to lectures did and there were really nice to use for exam review. I recommend for a basic psych class!
I would not take this class with this professor again. I feel like I spent too long studying for a 100-level course. Questions are worded weirdly in tests, wouldn't really cover much in class, and random facts were also tested on the tests/quizzes, making it hard to know what to study for + a lot of studying necessary to be comfortable.
I took this as a fun class and it is so hard. Do not expect this to be an easy class you will have so much work and she grades so hard. The tests are impossible
I took this as the online psy-p 101. Although I liked not going to class, she made this class the most time consuming and annoying class I took this semester. There is typically about 7 hours of work a week, and you have 3 modules due in that week, which contained lots of reading and notetaking.
This class was a lot of work, but the work was relatively simple. Be prepared for a lot of assignments in the asynchronous version of P101.
Canvas page was organized and everything was easy to find. Lecture quizzes were easy, material was interesting, quizzes weren't too bad. Just do the work and you'll be fine. She is always available to answer questions. Easy, interesting, and enjoyable class. Felt like busywork but was useful for the assignments.
So much unimportant busy work.
She is a good professor, just not my vibe. She gives lots of busy work and focuses on things that aren't necessarily on the exams :/
Dr. Patton shows zero compassion for her students, and assumes the worst in us, even when we reach out for help. She constantly makes mistakes during lectures, overcomplicates everything, and doesn't explain why we got things wrong on tests and assignments. Definitely find another K300 professor if possible.
So much unnecessary busy work. If you take this class study guides and homework problems will be most helpful, but it's so tedious. Her lectures are so pointless, teaches the wrong material and has to backtrack, I was just more confused anytime I went to her lectures. You're better off just taking the course with a different professor if you can.
Her lectures did not go over conceptual stuff that was needed for the exams and she assigned quizzes during the week that were honestly more helpful than her lectures but they weren't easy to pass. You have to put effort into understanding the material on your own or you won't pass. I recommend taking this class with another professor.
Find a different professor. The tests are impossible.
Really solid intro class, I appreciate how it was organized. When I did need help I got the answered I needed, so can't complain. I do recommend writing nice detailed and organized notes because the tests are all open book and there are a few tricky questions that can pop up, but overall I wouldn't worry about grades as long as you take good notes
I took this class 100% online asynchronous, so it is a bit different; however, her class setup is extraordinary and very much streamlined. She and her TAs answer very quickly and are very helpful if you ever need anything. Grading criteria is absolutely clear and she is very communicative / reminds you when important dates are.
Awful late-work policy, assigns entire modules of 8 assignments but only allows you to make up 3 of the *individual* assignments if you forget. So much busywork and it does not even matter if you get the math right if your wording is not 100% as she wants it to be. Take a different professor.
I had her for K300 and she was a great prof. Attendance was never taken by students greatly benefited from going to class. We did online canvas modules twice a week for homework and had 4 exams. I would definitely recommend if you need a stats course. She curved all of our exams.
While the workload was considered a lot week by week, she taught us very well and made sure to make the classroom as interactive as possible to engage your mind. She was also very caring, and she made sure that we felt heard and understood when it came to our struggles. Exams were curved and there was extra credit. Overall amazing professor.
Tendency to ramble during lectures, pretty boring but very nice and understanding. Structure of class is very annoying, test heavy. More tedious than difficult.
She's very nice, only reason I don't rate her amazing is because the amount of modules assigned each week are very time consuming. MC on exams I also found very hard at times. No attendance but go to class to learn the math for the exams! A lot of points given in this course that can help grade, lectures can be boring, overall meh.
Don't take, crazy workload, no lectures, poor communication.
The hybrid version of class typically has homework due M/W/F with in-person exams every other week. The material is digestible and easy to understand. Has other assignments like experiment credit and Inscribe that can sneak up on you. Just actually pay attention to the work and you'll be fine.
