Good class, most laid back person i have ever met.
This was the best class ive taken in a long time, cindy is one od the most fun and laid back people ive met at emerson so far (students included). If you take the city, take it with cindy!
she kicks ass!!
i loved cynthia!!! recommended with 4 stars.
she is defenitely laid back. the class was led by the class. Every class was a debate. I wish there had been more of a balance between teaching and debating.
Really nice lady. Chill class. Thumbs up!
It's a really easy class. Cindi is a great fun lax teacher. Lots of discussions...extremely liberal...sometimes wished they're would be more counterargument... but good discussions. You get to get somewhat involved outside the class with the comunity.
Best teacher ever. Well, it might be too easy, but whatever, it's IN. Miller rocks.
Cindy is AWESOME. Take any class you can with her. She's very frank and understands college students way better than most professors. Her class is easy, but she shows good movies and takes you on fun field trips (field trips in COLLEGE, guys!)
"I got my favorite skate board at a garage sale!!" Yes, this is a quote from Cindy. She rocks...so chill and totally understands college students (probably more than we understand ourselves). Haha...And the City is great cause you get to take fi
One of the best classes ever. Cindi is wicked awesome. Take any of her classes.
Take any/all courses that she teaches - she's just unbelievable.
Local action/globalchange is a misleading title. The class is just about social issues and we never discussed global change. we only discussed volunteer work. Kind of a waste of time yuppie liberal class. The prof is kind of a flake. She's knowledgeable, but is always cancelling classes. Easy class.
Had to take this course, and though it was really easy, it was a waste of time and money. yeah, cindy is really cool and chill, but not a teacher. If you are already socially aware, do not take the class, you won't learn anything. If you aren't, the class might teach you something.
one of the best professors here...so smart & chill. i e-mail her randomly just because she's an awesome person. class is super easy, fulfills IN requirement, plus you'll actually meet a prof you can't help but love here.
I'd rather have a mean teacher who can teacher than a nice person who can't. Cynthia Miller can't teach. The fact that she teaches urban studies at a collegiate level is pretty mind boggling to me. Want an easy course? Take The City. Otherwise...run.
I love Cyndi! She's an anthropologist, not a teacher and she treats you accordingly. She's very knowledgeable and will tell you great stories. If you spend any time with her she will practically devote herself to making sure she is helping you in any part of your life. I'm taking her again already!
Cindy is probably one of the easiest professors here, but unfortunately I didn't learn anything. She is also very nice, and I liked her as a person (and she's really chill and funny), but I didn't get anything from the class. If you want an easy A, this class is for you.
she is a **** who can't teach. easy but ****ing crazy as hell.
This class was really kind of an easy A and we discuss pretty rad things. She monitors discussions very well. I learned a few things and most importantly was able to see a lot of the subject matter in a new light.

Hell yeah.
Formally a pot smoking hippie she will def give you a laugh. As for her teaching skills they are def. lacking. Not my favorite class but it was very easy.
What better than a professor who strips in class--and lets you strip too? Miller is amazing! :
Prof. Miller uses hands on, creative methods to make class interesting. SHe's crazy and always ethusiastic about new ideas and approachable - willing to help you with any questions you have.
If you like field trips this is your class. All we did was hang around Boston all the time and have her buy us lunch. She's a wicked nice lady and if she enjoys your class it will be better, but taking it didn't make me a better person or anything. It's embarassing that I ended up with a C in this class.
Pointless class. Nice lady.
Yeah, so she gets high marks for being "easy," "helpful," and "clear," but not in good ways. She takes those to the exteme, to the point in which you feel like she's teaching kindergarteners. She's cheerful and accepts late work--but otherwise she gives fluffy lectures, and you may start to feel your brain oozing out of your ears in her presence.
Cynthia is the nicest lady! She's very helpful, very laid-back, and actually believes in what she's teaching. She's pretty easy and gets you interested in what she's saying so that it's not painful to sit through an hour 45 min. (which usually is cut early). Take her class, you won't regret it!
Interesting conversations. EXTREMELY EASY A! No attendance policy unless you miss like 6 classes straight she may email you and be like whats up. Nice woman, fun to talk to. EASY A
Easy Class. Cindy is a really smart, interesting woman, and a really fluffy, boring teacher. The kind of person I wish I had met in a bar not in a classroom. Everything I learned in this class I learned in the first week...
Take a class with Cindy. She is awesome. Easy A. Even though she tends to be pretty silly and lax about well everything, I definitely learned about the subject in the broad, lasting way that is better than cramming for tests. Favorite lady ever!
Cindy Miller is just awesome! Those morons who comment about her being easy don't get it that she expects you to take responsibility for your education. She'll open the door, and it's your choice to walk through! I'd take her again in a heartbeat!!
Man, she nearly flunked me, but I walked out of that class knowing more than any other class I can think of. She's very sweet about her expectations, but she's got them, and she sticks to them. Easy in some ways, like attendance, but demands that you THINK and use what you know.
Cindy is awesome!! She really knows her stuff, but you learn in a really deceptive way, because it's fun!! And it's not just memorization of mindless facts -- it's stuff you'll use over and over! She's funny, cares a lot, and will go the extra mile if you show some initiative!
Cindy Miller is the coolest woman alive. I wish she was my mom. Try really hard on all your work, though--there's not a lot of it, but she is a tough grader. When I got an A in all of my other classes, but an A- in Local Action/Global change, I was very surprised!
Cindy rocks! Just remember, she knows her stuff inside-out. Just remember she expects you to think -- she's not somebody you can slide by with. People think her laid back way makes her easy, but she expects that you'll take responsibility for yourself. One of the few profs who treated me like a REAL adult!
Cindy Miller, will you marry me?? This woman is the best!! The class I had with her is the only one I'll remember 10 years from now. She's sharp as anything, great to work with, understanding about problems, and has a sense of humor that kicks butt!!
How could anyone not love Cynthia Miller? She's wonderful, and so passionate about what she teaches that class goes by really fast, even when she's just lecturing. I had fun and still learned a lot!
Everyone loves Cynthia Miller... she's basically the most awesome professor at Emerson. Period. You can be late/not show up, but honestly, Burlesque is so awesome that I actually look forward to going in the morning.
Oh Cindy Miller...where do i begin? Well, she's a really nice, warm, harmless woman who is very passionate about helping people in need and teaching her students about those people in need. All in all, she's a great person with a brutally easy class (except for the final video), but the class could have been done in 3 weeks or less
Cynthia is the crazy aunt everyone wish they could have. She's passionate, driven, funny, and so outgoing. Her class is probably the only class that I will ever look forward to at 8:30. I will miss her dearly.
She's amazing!! She expects you to be responsible for your education and growth - from there, she'll take you as far as you can go. She doesn't have to force attendance - I wouldn't miss!! Great sense of humor, completely brilliant, and a great motivator. If you're a screw-off, it's not her fault, or her problem - want to learn - she's the one!
She's just the best - supportive, dedicated, inspiring - and we have fun! I wish I could take more of her classes, but they're all electives! Take her courses - any of them - if you have the chance!
Pretty freaking awesome teacher. HIghly recommended.
I can't say enough good things about Cindy Miller. She pulls the most amazing stuff out of nowhere, and makes every class something to look forward to! You get the kind of help and investment from her that you'd never get from most other profs. Easy? Only once she bails you out of the mess you've made! Then everything's easier! Thank you!
If there's anybody who will go the extra mile for you - help with writing problems, making sense of material, creating a kick-ass project - it's her. We all loved her, and really looked forward to an 8:00 a.m class. That's right - 8:00 A.M. I wouldn't get out of bed for anybody else!! Cindy Miller rocks!!
She really knows her stuff! This class was awesome - great hands-on projects, papers I actually wanted to do (Yes, wanted!), and I learned a lot! And get this - she's published on zombies! The perfect person for teaching "Making Monsters!"
Cindy Miller ... Gotta love her! All those up-tight, rule-driven profs could take a lesson. How do I describe her? Original -- Creative --Inspiring. More energy than me, and smarts to spare. I'd take her over and over if I could.
Saw everyone else's comments and had to chime in. Miller deserves every bit of great press she gets! You'll figure out how smart she is WAY too late - she's done it, seen it, heard it - and she brings it ALL to what you're trying to learn. CM may not be God, but he texts her daily!
i wasn't really sure how closely she would stick to the syllabus (which she totally didnt) but in the end, cynthia is IT. she's been there, done that, so don't bs her. very cultured and very cool. definitely try to have her at least once.
Cindy Miller's Staging American Women is one class you just can't miss! Hands-on, brain-on -- the whole deal! Here's the part everybody's slow to get: She loves this stuff, and wants you to be successful! Just go with it! Love her, love her, love her!
Miller is amazing. She teaches you everything you need to know, and then lets you take it in the direction you want to for projects. She's worth tuition. Definitely take a class. You'll never be bored.
Making Monsters was the best class that I took last semester. I would recommend it to anyone. Discussions were fun and the projects were always entertaining.
Monsters with Miller!! You can't miss this one! I love this woman - she's creative, patient and oh, yeah, frigging brilliant! Knows her zombies, too!!
Cynthia Miller is an amazing professor! She knows her monsters! It wasn't just obsessing over how cool zombies are. Making Monsters actually made me form questions about the human nature, its fears and desires. She showed us some pretty cool movies too! The essays were very interesting to work on and you have a lot of freedom for your final project.
Awesome teacher for an awesome class. Learned a lot and had fun.
Cindy is one of the best professors I have had since coming to Emerson! She is super passionate and really understands students, and always keeps us laughing and we do so in return. Her classes fill up fast so try to get a spot, you seriously won't regret it!
Oh. my. God! I SO love this class with Cindy Miller!!! Best class ever!! Take her!! Wicked smart and challenging, but lots of fun!!
Prof. Miller is the best, every class she had us watching some crazy zombie film, or acting out our own horror scripts. You never know what to expect from her, and her class is worth waking up for even at 8am. Also, don't buy the "Undead in the West" textbooks - I never even opened mine and got an easy A.
Don't miss Miller, if you can get a spot in class! I disagree with the person who said don't buy the books - class is discussion-based and if you don't read, it shows. But there are lots of chances to show your smarts in different ways! She'll also stick with you if you're having problems - that means a lot.
I love her class and her personality. This is probably the most intriguing class I had so far. Her Making Monster class is so inspirational and creative. I am fine with the weekly monster song narrative, even though it can be tough sometimes. I really like the projects she gave us, and I am willing to spend time on them.
Easily one of my favorite professors. She is very interesting to listen to and very enthusiastic about the subject matter. She was very positive and encouraging and assigns mostly projects (one paper, no tests). Every project was unique and conducive to creativity. We made videos, scripts, songs, puppets, presentations, and plays. Highly recommend.
Miller is so knowledgable and passionate about the history and cultural contexts of monsters and the class is especially enjoyable since the subject matter is really interesting. Though the grading system is somewhat unclear, it is easy to get a good grade if you just try on all you assignments!
Cindy's the bomb, honestly. I took her Burlesque class and learned SO much about, well, the history and culture of Burlesque. I would hands-down recommend this class to absolutely anybody. You learn so much more than just Burlesque, and she's such an interesting individual. I could talk to her for hours. So intelligent.
Cindy is a great teacher and I'm so glad I had her for one of my first semester classes. Making Monsters is a great class and very interesting.
The class was super fun. Cynthia is great and understanding of student's lives, and the material covered was fascinating. The assignments were also quite creative and very Emerson.
Cindy is a lovely person. Staging American Women is a history class and the burlesque era includes racism and misogyny, that isn't the fault of the teacher who is trying to discuss with us what happened. Cindy needs to correct her language, but she's taught for 20 years and listens when she's corrected. She's a genuine gem, take her class.
LOVE THIS WOMAN!!! Prof. Miller was the best part of my semester. She makes the course material interesting, uses a discussion format so we an all talk about the material, and is always available to help. She's super patient with people in class who have "agendas," too. Kudos for that!!
I went into this class thinking like ok.. a class about monsters? How interesting can this be? Christ, I was so wrong. There is nothing like sitting in a classroom at 8:30 in the morning watching Cindy get heated about Interview with a Vampire. She's so passionate about her work! Her lectures were mind blowing. She's also extremely lax. Love her!
Cindy was amazing. She was laid back but also super invested into what she was teaching. Her projects were fun and shes very understanding as well. The topics we covered were a bit difficult, but she did her best teaching them and even if they werent explained in the most correct of ways, she meant no harm at all. Definitely take her if you can.
CINDY. IS. THE. BEST. Seriously, I hate horror and this class was an 8:30AM, and none of that made me dislike Making Monsters because of one simple factor: Cindy's personality. She is so funny, so interesting, and so intelligent. I could not recommend this class more.
Cindy is my favorite professor I've had so far. She's so passionate about what she teaches and understands and cares for every one of her students. I highly recommend Making Monsters if you're into horror. It's been my favorite class so far.
I saw another rating here say Cindy is a GEM, and I couldn't put it any better than that. She's so passionate about what she teaches, and it really comes through in her class. Making Monsters is an awesome class because of her alone! Love her so much!
A superbly funky woman who clearly cares about the subject matter. Very passionate in the way she teaches, and always checked in to see if students were feeling overwhelmed with work. Very flexible and understanding. A very great professor to have conversations with and makes class discussions enjoyable
A quirky lady for sure. If you are interested in the content you will have a great time. Very little homework, very discussion based, but not required. She makes learning fun and less of a task, would take again.
Cindy is wonderful! I loved taking her class, she's one of the kindest people I've ever met. Making Monsters is a phenomenal class, and I would recommend it to anyone. The only negative thing I could ever say about her is that sometimes it feels impossible to write something worthy of an "A" in her class, but somehow I still got one, so. Love her.
Out of my 4 years at Emerson, Cindy still stands out as one of my favorites. She is endlessly kind and doesn't overwhelm her students with work, making it a great experience for everyone.
Cindy is AWESOME. Making Monsters made my weeks more enjoyable and inspired my writing a ton, and Cindy's humor and personality was always a delight. Show up and put effort into your work, as there is a lot you can learn from her. There isn't a ton of reading, but what Cindy does assign is always relevant and thought provoking. Also...movies!
I would not recommend taking Cindy's class for one reason and one reason only: she is terribly disorganized. She never updates Canvas and often does not announce that there are enormous projects until a few days before the deadline because she expects everyone to know her deadlines already, but they are impossible to track. Believe me I tried.
Incredibly nice and understanding lady. If you like horror and needs to fill your interdisciplinary req, you won't regret taking this class. Very little actual work needs to be done outside of readings and projects. I believe she once lashed out on one of her sections for being unparticipative...so make sure you participate.
Cynthia is great, and extremely kind! She needs to organize her classes a little bit more, and not talk at us as much it's clear she cares about the curriculum and the students. Would take again!
Cynthia is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Funny, intelligent, and truly wants to hear from her students and respects them as people. If you ever get the chance, take Making Monsters with her - it will make your whole semester.
I'm obsessed with Cynthia. She is so sweet and so passionate about what she teaches! If you participate and/or show general interest in what she's teaching during class time, she will love you back. I liked her making monsters class in particular because there was both creative and academic projects. Do the assignments and you'll get a nice grade!
Such a fun class, Professor Miller is awesome and understands that college os difficult. She doesn't overload you with work but that doesn't slack. I would recommend for anyone who is genuinely interested in the topic of horror or monsters! Show her respect and she will show it back to you!
The lectures were unorganized and I wasn't retaining useful information, despite paying full attention. We fell behind the syllabus' schedule, making it difficult to know when readings/assignments were due. The professor is very kind though, and forgiving with late work if you have a valid reason. Be kind to her & show up on time--you will be fine.
Long, boring lectures. Little homework, project-based course. Likes to give 89 and never provides feedback.
She never replies to emails and never gives any comments on assignments. Imagine you paid huge effort on all of the projects throughout the semester but only get all of them B+ for no reason. If you ask her the reason, she won't give any advice but will only reply that she thinks B+ is already a very high grade.
As an international student, I feel a bit uncomfortable. Every presentation, she gave feedback to local students but never gave me. She didn't provide comments or feedback for homework, even wrote a 15-page screenplay, she only gave you a grade. She even took my attendance when I needed to fly to my home. She emailed and said is your problem.
I love her so much. Her classes are always light and breezy, and the assignments are never hard and usually interesting. Can't recommend her class enough.
she's fun and hilarious and class functions as a discussion each day, but some of the assignments felt pointless, and she is addicted to giving B+'s and A-'s and giving no reasoning for it. i somehow managed to scrape by with an A and was shocked bc i got an A- on everything, despite the high quality and effort put into my work
I can only say that there is nothing to be learned from her class, which is a meaningless thing. And she always gives you a B+, no matter how hard you work on your homework, and your serious work and other people's perfunctory work are getting the same grade, very unfair. She won't tell you why you got the grade.
It's evident that she really finds monsters interesting because her lectures are just her talking about the monsters and bring up google photos as evidence. I did no readings in this class and got by because her lecture and assignment style does not require the readings. I don't like how she doesn't give feedback unless you get a really bad grade.
Classes were fun at times but a became a little mundane as the semester went on. She would usually just talk and let the class guide the discussion which was nice when people participated, but most often people didn't. I don't think she looks at the assignments because on every assignment I've gotten a A- or a B+, and she doesn't leave feedback.
super interesting and excited about her class! Class and assignments didn't always reflect the syllabus which was confusing at times. Doesn't give feedback for grades on assignments, although I think you can go to office hours for additional info
I did not read a single thing for her class and yet understood all of the material. What you discuss will keep you up on what the topic is, and class feels like a fun get-together to talk about what we love and hate about that weeks topic. There's a few projects, but they aren't difficult if you put in the effort.
Class with Cynthia was always entertaining and the course material was super interesting. There are several readings on the syllabus but I never did them past the first few weeks of class, and I never fell behind. The assignments allow for creative freedom which I really appreciate, however, she gives no feedback on assignments at all.
Professor Miller's class is a fun, discussion-based experience. While assignments can feel pointless at times, her grading is fair if you engage with the material. unstuck AI proved helpful for study prep alongside the course textbook.
This woman loves monsters.
I mean, as a person? Absolutely adore her. She was super chill and funny, and she made every class really fun to be in. As a professor? Still incredible, I just wish she gave feedback when she graded. I got nothing but B+'s all semester and I have no idea why. She is a really fun professor though.
