she is very helpful, and teaches the class well, also gives easy exams...IF YOU PAY ATTENTION!!
She was my favorite professor this semester, and I reccomend this class to people who want to really learn and are actually interested in art. I learned so much, and I didn't even have to take the final because my quiz scores were high enough. Do all of your journals, go to every class, and pay attention!
She's the cutest pregnant lady i've ever seen.
Her speech patterns are incredibly irritating. She makes up 8+ letter words that don't exist, and uses those words 30 or more times in a class. If you are into the esoteric and far fetched meanings of art, then she is for you. If you just need art credits then skip this lady.
Ms. Reiss really sparked my interest in art history. I thought the class was really easy. Exams do take memorization but the essay portion is easy. Attend every class and get an A and you dont have to take the final!
I dropped her. She is very difficult to take notes from because she talks too fast and with little clarity about far-flung ideas that you must carefully memorize for tests. Her style of speaking can be very irritating. She overloaded us with mountains of homework, meanwhile she couldn't even make it to class on time, making it that much worse.
I took this class online this year and I am just about done with it. I would definitely recommend taking her class online. Its nothing but reading and taking quizes. You do have homework, but you don't have to turn it in and about 98% of the quiz questions are on the homework, so do the reading and the homework and you'll get an easy "A".
She speaks VERY quickly. I needed a laptop to take coherent class notes...If you make flash cards for each slide, show up to class, and do your journals this class won't be difficult. Tests are essay based. We had 4 quizzes a midterm and a final. Quizzes are mostly slide identifications. Not an easy A, though A's are definitely possible.
I took this class online and thought it much easier than her 1D class that i took regular last sem. There are weekly quizzes and that is your grade. Do the homework and use it to take your quiz and you should be fine. She gave us an extra credit assignment if we needed it. Not sure if she always does that.
Ms. Reiss was a pretty good teacher. If you show up to all the classes and average an A you won't have to take the final. Quizzes and midterm spaced equally, 10-15 slide identifications and 1 essay question. Use flashcards or have a good memory for the slides. 2 Journal entries for every class really help with quizzes. Gives E.C. on quizzes.
Awesome teacher, very sweet. Show up for class and participate in discussion and she will luv u! I missed one of the exams and she didn't even count it against my final grade! Easy A and you actually walk away with the knowledge of art history. Definately recommended!!
I am taking her online course, it is a piece of cake. Just do the homework and use it for each quiz. However, she does throw in at least 1 question each quiz you need to find in the chapter so keep your book handy.
From reading other ratings I wish I took her online class... Throughout the whole semester I really enjoyed the discussions in class. However, the final few weeks of the semester were absolute hell. When I started to panic about not passing the class I emailed her a few times and never got a response. TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS!!
She is very enthusiastic about her area of expertise. But she is not clear, her tests are hard and unless you are planning on being an art major it's snooozeville. Take a nap before coming to class.
i took the online class. basically you read the book, take quizzes and an essay at the end of the semester. really simple. no extra credit. btw, some of the quizzes were based on an older version of the book, which could kinda tanlge things up.
Her questions are hard to understand.
Cynthia is awesome!! Her lectures are interesting and enthusiastic. She tries to bring something contemporary to her class which makes it way more interesting and fun!! Journals are fun too, help you learn the material. Tests are SUPER easy! Highly recommend her for Art1B!!
easiest online class ever! i sometimes never read the chapter and i would still get a B on the quiz. the whole class is quizzes and the final is a two page journal entry. basically no work, but i still learned art history!
I love this woman! She's beautiful and classy and an AMAZING teacher! Probably the best art history teacher at West Valley.
Great teacher, to the point, you learn the work and you do well. Very understanding. I loved this class and learned a lot!
This class is a nightmare.I took her online class in summer. This class would make me cry.I would study the whole week for her quiz but failed to of them.she expects you to learn every detail of the book.she does not realize that this class is a five week class and the load of the class shouldn't be the same as a full semester class.DO NOT TAKE it!!
I took her online summer course, while I was vacationing in Florida and Georgia over the summer, if you study the study guides it is a pretty easy grade. She is very strict to due dates. If you take her online class, make sure you are on a computer with a good connection because if you loose connection, you get credit for what you finish.
Very helpful, keeps you interested in the course. Well planned lessons and interesting blog concept. The only drawbacks are the journals per class.
She is an amazing teacher, she makes you want to learn more. She really got me interested it art more then i already was. The class is a lot of busy work but if you know what she wants then its easy, i have gotten 99%, 125%, 108% on all the tests and quizzes and i didn't study that much, take 1D its the best!
I took her online class and it was great. She was consistant and always answered any questions in a timely manner. The quizes are timed but if you use the index and sticky notes, you can refer to the book. The class concentrates on religious paintings, but its interesting. There is a paper at the end but she grades fairly. She is highly recommended
Ms. Reiss is a fair enough teacher, she is very strict about her deadlines and her syllabus seems to slightly evolve over the course of the class. I would recommend taking her online class, as she is very on top of keeping up to date with the class. Her class is very interesting and if you do the reading and study her study guides, you will pass.
I took her class online. She posts everything in a timely manner. Study guides are very helpful but you do need to read the text! Museum paper isn't too hard to write. She is very good/quick about responding to questions and shes also very nice!
I took her online class during the winter session. Very intense. 3 chapters per week. Plus timed quizzes. Essay questions on the quiz. Imperative you do the reading or you won't succeed. Flexible if she makes error in due dates. Lots of technology used. Blogs, Voicethreads, ANGEL. It was hard to keep track of when things were due.
She's an ok teacher and the course is set up nicely but she NEVER responds to any email or question. She also lost my essay and when i emailed her she never responded.
What you put into this class is will directly reflect your grade... there are numerous assignments intended to help you with learning the material covered. her 10 point quizzes are hard! go to every class, participate, use flash cards & make sure you average 90% so you can avoid taking the final.. TRUST ME YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE FINAL!
(Online) She takes 20 minutes to make a point. Voice threads are the most tedious exercise EVER. She uses a million online "tools" like too many different ways for the students listen to lecture = completely unnecessary. I honestly should have known: She has three last names which include a hyphen. Pretentious doesn't begin to describe this woman.
She makes up words in her lectures, -words that spell check won't know, most of them difficult to understand. Her lectures are very long, she usually takes forever to make a point about an artist or piece. She talks very fast and I suggest taking notes on a computer, handwritten notes didn't cut it for me. She's somewhat of a bore
She talks way too much, very unorganized, not good with returning emails.Due dates are due dates with her.YOU NEVER WANT TO MISS THIS CLASS OR YOU WILL BE BEHIND AND WHATEVER IT WAS SHE COVERED TRUST ME ITS GOING TO BE ON A QUIZ OR MIDTERM.I highly recommend flash cards. The final is a pain in the ass so do well in everything 2 avoid taking it!
Fantastic teacher. She knows her subject extremely well and as such the lectures are dense, but interesting. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, but if you attend every class and pay attention you'll be fine. She made modern art understandable - something that no other teacher has managed to do for me. I highly recommend her.
Cynthia has been one of my favorite teachers at west valley since I took my first class with her. Her lectures are clear and very detailed, and she's very understanding. She doesn't require a lot of work, and the work that is assigned is easy as long as you pay attention in class and actually try. She's a great teacher and I will miss her classes.
Love this lady=).Took her online class and at first started out kind of rocky. But if you try hard and do all the work you will do fine. Her test are really hard but she is a good teacher and understands her students.Take her if your a hard and self motivated person.
I am in the class this semester and her lectures are dense. Her class is hard with a lot of information. If you attend class, do the journals take good notes you will learn a lot and you will do well on quiz. Great for someone interested in studyingh Art History or philosophy but NOT for someone just taking the class who is trying for an easy A.
Miss Reiss is an excellent teacher probably one of the best I have ever had. She is full of information got me interetesed in art. She talks very fast and lectures a lot. But you really learn from her at the end. She doesn't like slackers but she supports you if you work hard.
I love her!! She is so helpful in her online class...her lectures are relevant and applies to both visual learners (powerpoint/video) and audio learners (voicethreads). She's great!
She is VERY knowledgeable and definitely knows a lot about the subject. As far as giving you all that knowledge in an organized and clear manner, no way. Frustrating when she tells you to read about certain artists but won't give you the page #s in the book. Terrible at responding to e-mails and a terrible speller. Ever heard of spell check?
She is an AMAZING teacher! I have taken 1B and finished this class too. She is extremely knowledgeable and gets you interested by bringing current events into class. The book was not much help as her lectures were way more than was covered in the book. She's very cool and likes to see you engaged in class.
I love Dr reiss. I hate the journals. But if you do excellent on the quizzes, don't miss class, and get all your homework in on time you don't have to take the final. You dont want to take her final.
If you take Art 1A online, it's not really online! She makes you travel to museums in SF and attend mandatory presentations/speeches on campus and other places, like SJSU and do reports on them. If you take this online, because you don't have a lot of time to go places, good luck. Her class is based off the book too, read it and you'll be fine.
This is my third class with Reiss. Two online and this 1d class- she is awesome. Very nice, unless you don't do assigned extra readings. She has so much knowledge and loves it when you participate and try hard.
I took her online summer class. She was ver nice, and the setup of the class is good. Pretty easy to get an A if you do the work. She is not a hard grader if it's clear you participate.
She is an amazing teacher but requires a lot of work. She requires you to go to a museum in SF & claims to assign "no homework" but says you need to write a 3 paragraph journal after every lecture. I dropped the class because I couldn't keep up with her. Still a great & informative teacher.
Her online class is so great. She is very nice but very clear about deadlines. He video lectures are interesting and her podcasts are even cooler.
really HARD class
Her modern art class is really difficult. She is brilliant, she is a fast talker, but one of the best profs I have ever had here. I've taken many art history classes here which made me fall asleep. Her class made me really interested in art and philosophy.
knowledgeable teacher.like a lot of P.H.D."s thinks you should know all she knows. assignment list is endless.75 slides with title, author, movement and decade to memorize. a museum trip with paper attached. 2 on campus events to repot on. 15 journal entries(2-3 page essay with bibliography) 5 page term paper take this class only if u r art nut
Transferring to UC Santa Cruz as an art history major because of Dr Reiss. I have taken all her classes. She is amazing.
I took the same art 1b online class and learned more than I ever have from an online class. It is so much harder and so much more work than any other class than any other online class I have ever taken. If you want an easy online class this is not the class. If you want to really feel like you learned something take it.
I took same online class and Art 1d at the same time. The hardest classes but the most I have learned in any art history class.
Reiss is a wonderful person and clearly knows what she's talking about but her directions are very unclear, and she changes what she wants alot. I was taking calculus, chemistry, and english honors last semester, yet this is the class i struggled with most! The material wasn't hard, it was just her teaching style and how unorganized she was.
Dr. Reiss is incredible. The quizzes and mid-terms are primarily based on her lectures and I received over 100% on each quiz just from taking good lecture notes. Despite what the reviews assert, her class is not impossible as long as you remain motivated. Attendance is imperative and as long as you have EXTREMELY detailed notes you will do fine!
SHE IS A GREAT PERSON! Took her online ART 1D Class For Winter Session. But I only gave her a low rating because I'm warning everyone that if you are not an Art Expert or Enthusiast then this class isn't for you to take online. I'm not doing well and this is hard to learn everything in 1 month. I dont even know how to comment on art Im very sorry.
You will do all the reading because there is TONS! You will look through the lectures and notes she provides but some things will be unclear. You will take the quizzes and after all your work you might not do as well as you thought. Its almost as if she's out to get you! Plus she's not good at responding to Emails and questions.
Her online class was much more difficult than it had to be based on her lack of clear direction on what was required. Very slow in responding to emails and gave little guidance. She's knowledgeable but the class could have been so much mor interesting if it was easier to know what was required.
This was a hard class with lots to read. I took it because I thought it would be easy. It was not easy but I learned a lot.
The hardest class I had all semester and I am a engineering student
great class. There was a lot of summer work though. Professor is fair and clear.
The class is easy if you are organized and keep up with the work. The art is beautiful and very interesting. The prof makes the class personal through her lectures.
This was my third online course with professor reiss. This was another great class with even interesting art. Take her classes, you won't be disappointed. Also, she is very understanding.
Easy A if you do the work an dkeep up with readings. Ther is lots of interesting art and she uses seomething called voicethread to talk about the art which is pretty cool
If you are an art major, DO NOT TAKE HER. You will end up reconsidering your major, or, HATE IT. She takes forever to response your email and the class instruction was a whole mess. If you don't have time, again, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am an Art Major, and I Hate Math. But I got an A+ on my math class, but F in this class.U know what im saying
This was a great class and not easy but I learned much from her class. She answers to emails right away usually at odd hours. If you wanna learn somthing take her.If you want an easy online class where you do not need to work. this class won't work for you.
I am taking this class during the intersession. It is structured well, fast-paced, challenging but fun. The teacher is helpful and has answered all my emails right away. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the class.
Worst teacher ive ever had. Unorganized lectures and fast paced do not mix. Highest workload ive ever had for any class, unreasonable assignment dates (ie: 1 week for 2 research essays considered part of the final, the final being another in-class essay, all given on top of an original research essay assigned 3 weeks prior) plus others. VERY HARD
just finished the spring semester- NO FINAL in her class! if you meet three requirements like no absences, no late work and great quiz grades you get an a on the final. Believe me , having one less final makes a bog difference
Class layout is organized and easy to follow. prof has a "weekly pattern" that will save you so memorize it! prof answers emails quickly and likes you to come to office hours. Good class pretty interesting art stuff even if you dont like history.
good art class with helpful teacher.
Second class with cynthia . Really glad to be in her class again this semester . She is one of the best teachers on campus.
She is brilliant and interesting but don't miss a class you'll be lost .
Unorganized and never responds to emails which is very frustrating. Makes you read over 50 pages and quizzes you on tiny details in the book.
No easy online class here. You gotta work for the grade but the class is pretty cool for even a math major who did not want to take the class. She is very understanding but doesn't like slackers. Easy schedule to follow with clear deadlines
Super smart , down to earth ,
totally clear organizations ,good class. helpful and nice to meet in person. so go to office hours
I just finised a semester in 1d with Prof reiss. She makes you think about art in a way no other teacher does. She isnt easy but she rewards participation and hard work. you dont take her final if you never miss class, turn in alls assignments on time and do well on all quizzes. its worth it.
Hard grader. Textbook not needed for homework but very helpful for tests.
Doesn't respond to emails. Grades way too hard and gives little direction for homework and tests. Do not take her
Great senester with Reiss. She helped me with my paper until it was done-but she is strict about deadlines. She will help a lot , but does not like it when you come to class unprepared.
This is an online class and she has all these links, voicethreads, videos that you have to watch and sometimes when you click the link it takes you to a unrelated page or it no longer exists. Also too much going on: read this, watch that, listen to this, view that, etc... Click, click, click. Hard to keep track of all her dates.
Trust me with this. I gave her a 2 for helpfulness bc as an online class, she almost never answers her emails. I guess she's too busy which sucks. A 4 for clarity bc she puts up the instructions pretty clear. It's a ton of work that you use to prepare for but it helps a lot. Lastly, a 2 for easiness bc it is NOT an easy class. You have to read!
Dr. Reiss is great. She's very passionate about art, which makes classes enjoyable. She made things very clear at the first class. 1 museum visitpaper 1 research paper 3 quizes and event reflections. If you get average of 90% before final attend all classes and submit everything on time you don't have to take the final, which is pretty AWESOME
The art 1d class is interesting with lots of information. Pay attention to her deadlines, instructions are clear so you always know what to expect. The summer class is intense but she responds to emails very quickly at all hours of the day and night- does this women sleep? This is not an easy class but she knows her art.
Here's what I've gathered from my experience. When responding to an email, it can take as little as 2 mins to about 2 days depending on question and time ( they're helpful responses nonetheless). Quiz questions consist of overall subjects and tiny details (a few points worth). Just don't leave things to the last day & you'll probably be fine.
I love this professor- so smart and so interesting!
Don't take her class if you want to know what your grade is. She's terrible when it comes to helping you out and also with updating grades. You have to BEG her to even get them uploaded. When she finally gets back to you after complaining to the Art's Board, she comes off with a lame excuse as to why she didn't do it such as being on vacation.
The teacher is really inspirational and is very passionate about art. you will love and learn so much from the way she talks. There is a lot to remember and it is not an easy class but it is a class that is worth taking at west valley.
Honestly, this class is the least organized I've ever taken (2x: 1 online, 1 @WV.) She's really nice &lectures are interesting, but all i kno is that I'm lucky I've been passing her tests somehow?? Don't forget to do the journals!! &write down EVERYTHING she says in lectures, I MEAN IT. u never kno what little detail will show up on a test!
I have this teacher for Art 1D and also had her for Art 1a online -- the lectures in class are pretty interesting. It is a difficult class for an easy A, but you learn a lot. The online class is structured very easily as long as you keep up but the non-online classes are great for really getting into the material.
I did not have to take the final exam! SWEET! You can do it just don't skip any class, study for all her quizzes with flashcards, take good notes, turn in everything on time and participate in class.
Stay away from this class! Her instructions are unclear, the questions that are in the test you barely will find in the textbook, and her study guides are useless when it comes to tests, so be aware. One of the least helpful classes I've ever had.
I took this class online and it wasn't that much homework but the tests were extremely hard and timed with only one attempt. You had to write multiple paragraphs and many multiple choice under 70 minutes. Studying still made the test super hard. The material was interesting but I would not recommend this class to someone looking for an A
The online class was surprisingly very interesting-- lots of reading, lots of discussions but I learned so much about all types of different artists from the online lectures that the prof created . I took it purely for fun, it was worth it!
Fascinating and inspiring teacher. I am taking this as a requirement but she makes the history so interesting.
Cynthia is a really fantastic teacher. While the class is probably one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken, I am incredibly glad I took it. Her lectures really delve into the material and I was able to get most of the material for her tests from the lecture notes I took.
The teacher is organized and likes to help students. She encourages students to sit in her regular class lectures which helped me get through the online class because the lectures helped make the text easier to understand.
Take a class from Dr. Reiss if you really want to learn about history and art. It won't be easy but it will make you look at the things differently.
Amazing lectures you won't want to miss. Helps you understand the context of a work. Welcomes your opinion and respects it. A lot of work but rewards your effort grade-wise.
I took this class during the winter session, so it was a lot of work. There was a lot of reading, writing assignments based on questions she gave for each unit, one research paper, and a few tests. There were online lectures where we could actually listen to her speak which really helped me with the material. Easy grader so just do the work.
Just wanted to take a fun/interesting class about art for elective credit. Do NOT take her online class. She is so completely unorganized and has not idea how to use technology. Not only are images from quizzes missing but her assignments are a mess and make no sense. You will not pass this class because she has set you up to fail and does not care
Art 1D online class was nicely organized. Easy to understand with video lectures that made the textbook more interesting. Teacher is pretty fair and grades on improvement but read the text and follow her instructions on the image and concept guide!
Take her class! You won't be disappointed.
This was my first online class was this teacher. The class was clearly organized with grading criteria and assignments. The class video lectures made the topic come alive especially since she mixed recent news and events with art from different time periods. I would take her again.
I took Cynthia but dropped mid semester. I was not a fan. I tried really hard to like her even though she insisted everyone call her Dr. Reiss (I've had several PhD teachers and they never did that). Screamed at multiple students if they had to leave early. We're in college, we're paying for her time. Will not be taking her again.
it's a tough class but teacher leaves you with a new way off understanding the world. If you do not want to work hard and attend class, don't take the class. If you want to learn something and feel like you did something during the semester, take it.
It's a fun class and she is quite inspirational.
I took her art1b class last semester too. Amazing lectures!!!! I wish she had another class for me to take. 3 quizzes, midterm and, final is optional if your grade is good in the class. 1 final paper and a short museum paper (fun to visit the museum anyways). To get an A on the quizzes, make study cards of each art piece --easytodo
Though I only took her online class, she is an amazing instructor! She really puts effort into the material and makes it very interactive. I liked that the due dates were clear and set at the very beginning. The work can be a bit much when juggling other classes but it isn't too bad. Keep up with the assignments and quizzes and you'll be fine!
Literally the best professor I have ever had!! Her lectures are so inspiring and she is so passionate about what she teaches which makes the class so easy to fall in love with. The work was not too hard and she was very understanding if something was to be turned in a little late. Cynthia is the real deal when it comes to art history!!
Took her online course over the winter session, the work load for such a short period of time was fair and she made it very interesting. A few comments to her special audio lecture slides and an essay along with some online quizzes made this class fairly enjoyable. She was also very helpful and understanding!
You have to take her class! The lectures are so full of information and interesting. However,do not miss class or you won't pass her tests because she lectures way beyond what you will read in the class textbook. You won't be disappointed as she's one of the best teachers at the college.
I took Cynthia's online survey art 1 and her survey art 2 class in person. They are very different and her lectures in the physical classes are intensive but excellent. She lectures online as well which makes the online class so much more interesting especially since it is done with images that you can comment on. Weekly patterns make online easy
I took this class over 4 weeks to earn transfer credit. Although the discourse was entirely online, you can tell Prof Reiss cares a lot about her students and about fostering student discussions through blogs and voice threads. Her class was informative and challenged a lot of my preconceptions of the subject matter. A lot of reading but rewarding.
This professor is an awful communicator, took her DAYS to respond to my emails. Do not take her online classes if you are someone who needs professor/student interaction (or if you typically have questions regarding class material). She is disorganized, puts the wrong due dates on assignments and does not give clear instructions. Lots of reading.
This class requires so much work. There are mini essays which she calls "journals" collected at random so you must do 1 for every class. The quizzes/tests are ridiculous; must memorize every piece of art, the year, movement and artist & write a timed essay. She is late to class everyday. Don't buy the textbook, I didn't even use it once.
I took her online class during Winter and the coursework is not too bad. Just read the book, listen to VoiceThread, take notes and do the Image and Concept Guide and you'll be fine. She's also pretty quick with responding to questions. Her lectures, even though not very long, but were interesting.
She teaches very well and thoroughly. However, she speaks way too quickly. She gives a lot of voice lectures online as additional homework. She's not at her office hours listed on her syllabus. She's not clear about the journal entry. She wrote the wrong office room number. I don't recommend you to take her class.
Hard class with lots of lecturing . Lecture are key to quizes as most information is from her lecture. Take good notes you will need them. If you need an easy class where you will be absent, this is not that class.
She teaches you A LOT about art history and makes art history more understandable. However, she speaks WAY too fast, even though I normally can catch up. You must take extensive notes in class. If you go into her office hours without letting her know, she would not be in her office. Go to her office hours because she is much more helpful there.
Lots of art analysis/reading
Her workload is nothing heavy but the one thing I would say is that she's not good at replying back to emails. She only replied to my email once, then for future assignments she didn't respond at all, which made those assignments a little difficult to understand. She's not a tough grader though, so overall her class was pretty straightforward.
Online Art History class was way harder than I thought it would be. There's a LOT of weekly reading, and her quizzes on it are decently tough. Her grading criteria are very unclear, she doesn't follow her own syllabus when assigning point values and due dates to assignments. She doesn't respond to emails and grades stuff very late. Too hard of a GE
Im taking the winter class. She does 2-3 announcements a week which helps me be organized. she responds in minutes sometimes to my emails. But their is lots of work. I will complete the class knowing more about art for sure. I missed a few dates and she was understanding.
Just finished the class during winter break . I learned a lot and prof had us do a cool video presentation of our papers for peers. It was fun to see others present their papers. Lots of information to learn over break but way fun.
Took Art01A as an online class during winter break with Dr. Reiss and I would say it's a doable course. There's a lot of reading so prepare to be responsible and do the work! Overall I think Dr. Reiss is okay, she really needs to work on organization and replying to her emails since it is an online class. Not sure how she's like in real life though
Excellent class this semester. Thorough information and lectures , I feel like I am learning a lot . Very easy to follow but not easy.
Talk to teacher in person and sits in her regular class she lets online students do that. It helps me do better on quizzes
This professor is so unorgainzed! The assignment dates and points on syllabus do not match with calendar and modules. She forgot to open the modules twice but asked us to upload the homework. Barely replied the email. Grade assignment until the last minute and didn't provide feedback. Do not take!
This is Art 001, she makes it way too hard for a GE course. Tons of readings but not related to the quiz. Quiz was tested on very detailed stuff, even though you read every chapter, you are hard to find the correct answer. Sometimes the quiz questions are out of the textbook! Lost my interest in any art courses!
Lots of reading for sure but a class that is worth it. Teacher responds pretty immediately to emails. Great summer class, still have one week left.
Super disorganized! All of the classes were lectures off slideshows that only had images of art pieces and sometimes, if you were lucky, the name of the artist and piece. Any information or instruction was conveyed verbally and usually only said once and she was ten to fifteen minutes late to class everyday.
Disorganized class but the professor tries. The voicethread presentations are the most inefficient learning methods ever. The class was boring but it may be because I don't like art history. She also takes a while to respond to your emails.
One of the most interesting classes Ive taken. Teachers lectures make history and art fun, even though I dont even like art. Helpful, interested in ensuring students understand and do well. Its not easy, but a really great class.
This professor was always 20 mins late to class. She always scheduled meetings during her office hours and was unavailable. Wasnt there for our midterm and had a sub. The questions were so confusing that even the substitute couldnt understand the questions and he had a PhD in art history. She also misspelled things a lot. So just dont take her.
Horribly disorganized. Summer class was short, but manageable. Does NOT give feedback, no homework to turn in but rather a study guide for quizzes that doesn't help. Copy-pasted info from previous classes, as some dates didn't match up. Typo heavy. Didn't respond to my emails. Voicethreads are pretty useless but comments are graded.
This professor may have been the second worst professor I have taken at this school. She never responds to emails whether it be the email given to students or on canvas. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME TAKING THIS CLASS, ESPECIALLY ONLINE. There arent many assignments but, the assignments & tests & useless voicethreads are all of you have for a decent grade
Literally copy pasted her fall 2019 class for fall 2020, meaning wrong dates and her syllabus being totally useless. Absolutely no communication nor follow up on assignments. REPEATED assignments so unsure about what you're being graded on or what to do. Unfortunately the only professor for REQUIRED classes, so good luck, the study guides are bad.
I will never take a class from this professor ever again, it's a shame I need this class for y degree. If you have any questions, that sucks, she won't answer them. She gives no feedback as to what you need to improve on or what you're doing well on. She is extremely disorganized, doesn't explain anything. DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH HER
Very nice and knowledgeable person but she is very unorganized. You don't know what is expected out of you. She makes you write art reflection journals after every lecture. Honors class has 3 papers which will combine to become your Final research paper. Too much writing in this class.
You know those professors you recommend to your friends? This is a professor you DON'T want to recommend to ANYONE. This class would've been easy if she gave feedback, which many students asked for. Don't count on her replying when you get stuck on a question, she won't answer. Watch out for her grading. Pretty sure I wasn't graded for all my work!
She doesnt teach at all and just tells you what to read of the long textbook. She posts things here and there but theyre useless. The class has only a few assignments but theyre doable. The quizzes are difficult but manageable because its online. She doesnt teach and then expects you to write a long research paper for the final and its hard
Do not take this teacher PLEASE! Never responded to any sort of important email and never gave instructions for assignments. Essay during class every day for a semester and randomly collects essays at any point of the semester. The final paper had no clear instructions.
Uses Voicethreads, videos with broken links, slideshows, and outside articles + textbook to read to get any sort of clue on the quizzes. Quizzes were hard bc of all the material. Does not respond to emails. Few quizzes with few questions so grade suffers if you miss even one question. Somehow the final essay was the easiest part of this course.
incredibly intensive class & workload but if you put in the hours it will pay off. she appreciates when you engage & go to office hours. tests seem hard but it's fine as long as you take good lecture notes. daily essays, honors class has a 15 page final paper but her standards for writing are not very high. lets you skip the final if you do well.
There's so much reading, and the quizzes ask questions about things I've never seen. She doesn't grade harshly, but she doesn't grade most things until the end of the class. Lock in for the quizzes, and you can get an A. Lots of links are broken, not very accessible, and she doesn't give clear expectations on projects until near the due date.
Dr. Reiss is an absolutely wonderful lecturer. Her Honors Survey of Western Art course is among the most interesting and engaging courses I have ever taken. She genuinely cares about your success; you just need to invest attention and focus. She has extensive knowledge of what she teaches and makes the course fun. I could say more, but I recommend!
She will not be accessible at all, this professor feels like a test proctor while you learn everything yourself. Absolutely no teaching done by instructor except through years-old prerecorded blips of audio. The material is not engaging at all, and if there were problems she would not respond. Lackluster class, would not take again.
Dr. Reiss is a great professor! The exams and paper in this class were legit college-level. Her study guides and feedback were extremely helpful for exams and papers - I worked hard but I learned a lot. She was available and was great at helping me deal with a problem I had with an online test. She is kind, fair, and I would recommend her class
This professor is like a test proctor - no real teaching. Assignments are doable but quizzes are tough, even with the textbook. Avoid unless you can handle teaching yourself. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for studying.
Amazing person. Happy to help. Always kind. This class is NOT for the weak. If you're looking for an easy class, it's not with Dr. Reiss. She does not mess around. The only way to pass her class is to learn. The tests are set up specifically to catch people using AI. It will get you will get an automatic zero. This class is 100% worth taking.
Lot's of interesting things to learn in her course but this class was not easy. Tests are based on EVERY single assignment/reading so be prepared to read a lot if you want a A. Assignments themselves were not difficult but this class also includes a huge research project that has multiple parts. Defiantly a doable class if you have discipline.
Readings and lectures are important! Don't underestimate studying art pieces that are in her slides. They WILL be on exams/quizzes, so stay away from cramming. A research paper as a final and keeping your grades up all semester can excuse you from the final exam. Her lectures were intriguing; she was, overall, a sweet and understanding professor.
Literally one of my favorite professors ever. Super content heavy lectures but always entertaining and fun to follow. She genuinely really wants to help you succeed and loves to engage with students outside of class. Participation isn't required but really helps with your success in the class.
