she struck a good balance between theory and real-world stuff and explained things really well. if you need a poli sci class, i'd definitely recommend this one.
if you have a choice for a political science class, take it from a major - not this one! she doesn't even let you ask questions. she's rude and very unclear and unhelpful. she's not a horrible person, she's just not a great teacher.
One of the best teachers I've ever had
This class was boring and the tests were extremely hard. Roberts is an OK teacher, but her expectations are TOO high.
Classes and discussions interesting. Professor very knowledgable in Poly Sci. Always willing to help and responds quickly to email.
Roberts humiliates students in class. Students not allowed to their own opinion in term papers. She teaches plagiarism. Student on 5/25/04 threatened with expulsion for exposing teacher's corrupt method of teaching. Please investigate and remove this
She will ****ing make your life a livng hell. I took her class and she didn't help me once. She can go **** WALTS and ride her ****ing Harly. She is one horible and tough ****. Don't take her. She doesn't let you have ur own opinion. Stupid ****
Professor Roberts really knows her stuff. You can learn a lot from her if you just pay attention in class and do the assignments.
Her tests are hard and she doesn't answer questions. On her essay tests, she basically expectes you to write her opinion. Doesn't encourage individual thought.

look if you love to read take this class....if you dont, dont think about it....she makes things to tough for no reason...and tests r hard if you dont read all the garbage she makes you do...shes pretty bad and fuked up my gpa
Cynthia Roberts really knows her s###! This woman has an incredible grasp of what she teaches. Although it was a very difficult class, I encourage people to take it, in order to be exposed to a professor of Robert's caliber. She's too good for Hunter College but she teaches here anyway,go figure..
JUMPS FROM ONE THING TO ANOTHER
Professor Roberts is a good teacher if you do your readings and if you know your stuff. Becasue she definitely knows what she is talking about. She sometimes goes off and tells her life stories while going through a lecture. But she is good if you like to read and your are really devoted.
i loved prof roberts's class. she's extremely intelligent and really knows her stuff. i learned a lot in this class. there is a lot of reading, but it's pretty interesting stuff.
Extremely boring!
Rather tough, I thought. Curt demeanor if you don't know what you're talking about. Tends to favor students from the former USSR. Started class by pronouncing any Marxist theory obsolete, useless. Leans to the right. Quite smart, but arrogant. Enjoyed the reading, which wasa bit much. Tough grader.
This was an amazingly good class if u want to learn something. the teacher knows a ton and you can certainly learn a lot. However there is a lot of reading involved and you should not take this class if you dont like political science. If you dont do the readings you will be screwed.
She is a horrible teacher. Not only her lectures are boring, but she talks too much about too many confusing things that completely makes the students lost. Her tests are evil. If you take this class, expect a 'C.' At least she's a nice person...
she is VERY CONFUSING. She doesn't make things clear to the students. Basely, if you are into this subject and understand it, then take it. If not, then get out of her class AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!
seriously...dont bother, you'll be doing your GPA a favor.
way over our heads, very unhelpful, annoying
GREAT prof for serious students.
Excellent professor if you've got an interest in the field. Knows a tremendous amount about the subject and is very helpful to serious students. Not a professor to be taken if you want an easy A or are taking a class to fill a requirement. If you're a poli sci major you really should take her.
She definitely deserves more credit. I truly enjoyed her class and the charisma she brought to it, and learned a ton. However, If you don't do the (large amounts of) reading, you won't agree.
Exams are fair. She demands a lot of work and requires a lot of reading. She loves what she does and doesn't mind taking time out to help you. If you are a serious student then take a class she teaches. However, if you are just trying to complete a requirement then you ought to avoid her. I strongly recommend her for SERIOUS students only! jmc
very arrogant and expects an introduction class to know everything there is about international politics. AVOID HER!
she is probably the worst teacher ever!!! when i came to hunter from kcc i thought i would get better quality teaching and BOY WAS I WRONG!!!
Very hard professor, a lot of reading
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! she is very self centered, doesnt envolve the students, she just lectures off into the distance, once she was out her T.A took over and it was like a breath of freash air, the class became fun and interesting but then she came back and, well, you get the point. dont get me wrong she is smart but has NO BUSINESS TEACHING!!
She knows...everything. Only take this class if you're serious about IR. She might diverge, but you will come out having learned your stuff. Dedicateed and passionate, even if eccentric. Don't let her scare you, but don't go near her if youre lazy or like to "get by." A testament that Hunter has serious scholars teaching.
took class b/c I luv internatnl relations - been competing since I was young, got 2 meet lots of politicians, diplomats when I was awarded, so LOVE politics+esp IR, work at UN. Knows the subject, but she's highly volatile, tacky, biased, VILE, 2-faced.. I relocated to NYC b/c of UN, had an A- GPA@an Ivy League, and A's and A+'s@ Hunter in PoliSci
Not a good teacher. She lectures into the sunset, interrupts students WHILE they're asking a question. I took cause it sounded interesting but she made it so tedious!
For serious students only, however if you fulfill the class requirements you stand to learn a lot. All poli sci majors should take her classes
Roberts is First Rate, but only for students serious about IR. She is demanding, teaches at the Ivy level; you will know more than the commentators & be ready for grad school (if you desire). She is brilliant & (unlike many profs) non-partisan, nor an ideologue. Will teach you how to write a great paper. Go to office hrs. The Best Prof at Hunter!
BEWARE! Take her only if you must!
Boring, self involved and rude. Lectured for an extra 10 minutes every single class. Did not end a single class on time and she would get sassy whenever someone got up to leave while she was droning on. This class (intro to IR) is 100% theory, nothing else. Beware, the reading is dense and, for the most part, useless.
She is not good at answering questions at all and goes on and on during class so that u have no idea what she`s saying. if u actually want to learn and have interest in the subject, DONT TAKE HER CLASS!
She is a very smart and informed woman but teaching is not her thing. she talks the entire time and doesn't say anything of much value. i learned nothing in that class. so boring. tests are very difficult. assigned readings are dense and she doesn't go over them or incorperates them much into her lessons. class attendance cut in half after 1 week!
i'm surprised by these bashing reviews. yes, she makes you work for your grade, but whats wrong with that? She was riveting and intelligent. if she came across as unapproachable, maybe because she has hundreds of students, commutes to and from columbia, is the department advisory, and actually works in the field.
Her lectures are unorganized. She expects you to understand all the IR theories without bothering to clarify them. She obviously thinks that POLSC 115 is an advanced course and not an introductory one.Multiple choice quiz, midterm and final multiple choice and short answers.3 assignments: summary, outline, take home essay.Unfair grader.Rude, biased
You'll come out of her seminars being better than you were but your view of the world will be a little bit worse. Keep it real (with a small "r").
Her class is rigorous. All Polisci majors should take it. She is knowledable and intereting but not approachable at all. Do your reading, come to class, meet with her a few times in her office to clarify any questions and you will be fine. You will learn a whole lot about IR if you do what the class requires.
An excellent professor, truly one of the most outstanding I've encountered. The War and Strategy class is challenging and you will expected to do a lot of readings plus a final paper. However, she is incredibly knowledgeable and will respect you as long as you put the effort into the class. Only serious political science students should take it.
For her intro-level class, she is extremely difficult. She purposely does this, to weed out students who aren't VERY serious about IR. She can be boring, but she's highly intelligent, and knows her stuff. I made it through with an A, so it is possible, just difficult. LOTS of reading, you won't keep up without staying on top of it.
In order to get into this class, you must be a serious IR student. LOTS of reading, TOUGH teacher, but she knows her stuff extremely well! She lectures on a bit, but in the seminar she encourages student participation, so be prepared! If you do the work, you'll do well. She pushes you, but she's a fair grader. I learned much from her,and enjoyed it
Professor Roberts is the most narcisitic, arrogant, tool of a professor I have ever known. If you love to be berated, told that you are wrong when you are actually right, and if you like to feel as though your professor is the big mean bully on the playground then you should take this class. I love IR and she made me hate it. She is a giant $%%$@
I came into this class with the intention of majoring eventually in International Relations. After this class, however, this idea is obsolete. Professor Roberts is not clear and tends to ramble in her lectures. She assigns academic articles that really are not appropriate in an intro class and expects students to remember everything from them.
Arrogant, rude, incoherent. Constantly talks about herself and name drops smarter people. Believes IR is the most important thing for humanity to understand, and says so frequently. A leniant paper grader, but the most difficultly structured Multiple Choice questions imaginable. You'd probably have to outline all the readings to get an A on tests.
It is true that she is tough to deal with but she really does have a lot to teach. I was temporarily discouraged from pursuing a political science major because of my class experience but in retrospect I learned ALOT. *She is a total capitalist and that is very present- especially in the economic and development portions of the class FYI.
Took an advanced IR theory seminar style course with her. She's intimidating and assigns an unholy amount of reading but that only forced me to work twice as hard and prepare more thoroughly. If you're looking for someone to baby you throughout the semester, go elsewhere. She's a challenge worth taking on though.
AH, Professor Roberts! She gave a great amount of reading, and claimed that IR was the most important thing that everybody should know, fair grader, I thought I was going to get a sure F but ended up getting a B- because I tortured myself to read all of her academic readings and passed the final and got a decent grade on my paper
Too many readings, expects too much for students. It's just POLSC 115, for God sake! The finals is cumulative. She expects you to remember all the authors' opinions from your readings which is TMTH. Not friendly.
She is the worst teacher at hunter college. She treats students like dogs and she even gives assigned seats in a lecture room!!! Respectless, she never gets to the point, she doesn't care about anyones opinion except for hers and Ken Waltz's. If she was my mother, I would die. Too much pointless reading. If you take this class you will fail, easily
She demands a lot from students. She says "it's ok not to know everything" for the final, but you better know, bc you'll fail. It's a lot of reading. She gives a course Pack which has about 30 readings. You have to know main arguments for the final, cumulative. She knows her stuff, but cumulative final is too much, unless you take 1 class/semester
Tough class with too much reading. She knows what she's talking about but can't make info comprehensible to students. I thought I would fail but she gave me a B- so grading wise, the way she does her percentages helps. Dont take the class if your not interested in IR but if you are, good luck cause she teaches other classes in the field.
Cynthia Roberts is not bad of a teacher. I was lazy in her class, but she did mean well. Work hard and engage her, she doesn't bite (that hard...)
You may not get an A in the class but you'll learn more about the world than you would in any other class. Professor Roberts is overall a great teacher - she can be unclear at times but she CARES about her students.
Roberts the IR buff did not translate well to Roberts the IR instructor. At times, she lost herself in twenty minute monologues on her life and IR and somehow, without fail, it happened quite often. We were given a doable syllabus that most students abandoned if IR wasn't their priority. And her assignments were vague in requirements.
Here's the deal on Roberts: It's hard, not easy to comprehend the meanings of the readings. However, if you attend everyday and listen you will learn so much about the world around you it is worth the effort. I am an A/B student and polsci isn't my major but I walked out with a B-. She tends to ramble on but it is actually interesting stuff.
Professor Roberts is really not that bad. Sure, she lacks some social skills and is a bit condescending, but overall she is spunky and really knows her stuff. She is helpful if you reach out to her. Class is not writing intensive at all. 3 tests, 1 term paper, & very interesting readings. Taking this class is worth it, you will learn a lot.
basically and firstly, if you're not a)european or b)white american, then please expect to be treated like a flunky in her classes. she is so haughty and supercilious and an aficionado of showing off and flaunting her knowledge w/ the intentional purpose of making everyone else look stupid/dumb. that's her reason for existing on earth and teaching
Forget about her tendency to ramble. She is a fantastic woman who will give you the real deal on international relations. Grades fairly and is more than willing to chat after class. If you regularly come to class and smile you'll get a B at worst. Great professor.
It is true that if you do not take yourself and your work seriously, neither will she. But for those students who show interest and truly wish to excel in IR, she is an eager, rigorous, and caring mentor. She will vouch for you when you need it, and, with her stature, that means something.
Prof. Roberts's class is surely not an easy one. Yes, there are a lot of long readings through the semester, and also a group project, a term paper, two quizzes, cumulative final... Nevertheless, this is what we should expect from college level. She is serious about her work. If you are planning to go to grad school, this class is a necessity.
Prof. Roberts is a challenge. Her classes is a simple contract: do your part properly, and she'll give you everything she has to offer. Her lectures may be a bit unorganized, but one-to-one discussions are a true source of knowledge. If you are serious about IR, she'll be your good friend. Don't expect an easy class, but certainly a helpful one.
I am not a poli sci or IR person and I did well in the class. She understands that all we really want is an A, but she for sure makes you work for it. To her, an A means that it was perfect and perfection is impossible. She can be super intimidating but you have to put in an effort to get on her good side.
Just don't.
She made me cry
The best professor in the dept. she is not easy by any means but if you are interested in learning then make sure to take her class. She can be blunt and intimidating at times but is reasonable and offers help during office hours. If you are looking for an easy class def avoid, make sure to do the readings and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Roberts is constantly cutting people off (even yelling at other professors), discouraging students from having their own opinion on any matter and bragging about her own accomplishments and who she knows for half the class. Also @the person below me, why are you saying you got an A- when we haven't even taken the final exam yet? suspicious.
She is incredibly knowledgeable & passionate about her field and has impressive networks, however, many of the classes will prove just that as she talks AT the class. It's very reading heavy but she gives away answers when she rants She's not THE best, but she brought the difficulty I expect a 4 credit class to reflect. Dont let her get to you
Overall, I felt intellectually challenged by her class and I learned a lot about the subject matter. It is hard though to express your opinion if it's different from hers which is pretty frustrating. If you go to office hours, she's willing to talk with you and answer any questions which was helpful.
If you are interested in IR/Poli Sci, definitely take one of her classes. However, she really makes you work for your grade. There are a ton of readings (no textbook) but if you have any questions she will be happy to speak to you outside of class. You MUST show up. After this class, you will be ready for anything. Take it!
I actually didn't like Prof. Roberts at first but she really grew on me. She gives a lot of readings (but it's an IR class so it's kind of expected). Some things I found difficult were that she did grade kind of slow and she would go off on some tangents in class. But, she was really helpful du office hours and she was a pretty lenient grader.
She is an expert in her field. That being said, is abrasive and self-aggrandizing (constantly bragging about who she met, what she wrote, snubs other fields). Also disorganized as others have mentioned and did not get much out of lectures.
The worst kind. Wastes half the class giving her own opinion. Dismisses yours as irrelevant regardless. Readings are so much you won't keep up and this opinion was made by the whole class. Steer clear of her, you'll save yourself...
This class was so unorganized, such a mess just trying to figure out what to do. Here's an idea, tell students what is due and when. Instead, you get some bizarre puzzle and a bunch of aimless lectures of an old woman who just likes to hear herself talk.
She's a pro, and I loved her class, but I can see why someone wouldn't. If you have a genuine interest in international relations, and you don't mind sitting back and listening, her classes are "must-takes". If you're not into this field, or you like discussion/activity rather than lecture heavy classes, her class may not be for you.
I am taking her right now for POLSC 282 and honestly, she is tough. I received an F on her midterm and she told me that I should take classes that have final papers due not an MCQ Final. She made two of my classmate's cry. She insulted the history majors in my class for not knowing who Lafayette, Rochambeau, or DeGrasse were.
I've never met a professor that talks so much. The moment a student has the chance to talk the most they get is 5 words in before she cuts them off and continues giving her opinion. Barely goes off the slides, reading are long.
I took this class 18 years ago. It was the hardest class I've ever had before law school. If you came to school to learn IR, take her class. If you came to get an A, Go elsewhere and in general stop focusing on your grades and focus on learning instead.... you are missing out on a lot otherwise.
Prof Cynthia is very passionate about international relations. She gives a lot of readings, but they are very elite, insightful, and super interesting if you're interested in IR as well. Definitely read as many readings as you possibly can and you'll be able to understand and analyze any world conflicts.
I should've listened to the reviews. The POLSC115 class I took was a 50 minute lecture and 50 minute discussion. I only had her for the lecture section but she would go on tangents about Russia and waste class time. Did not offer study guides or anything and is overall rude. She's clearly passionate about the subject but does not know how to teach.
If you want to spend an hour of her lecturing on nonsense take Professor Roberts. She goes on random tangents, doesn't give exams back or provide any feedback for that matter and doesn't provide study guides for exams. I have never taken a level 100 class so difficult. She is very rude. She's passionate about IR but she's a really bad professor.
Very rude, reviews don't lie. She is very unorganized, was weeks behind in slides in comparison to what she was going over in class. You must attend class so that you know what is going on. She expects you to know things that were never taught. Apologized saying that she hopes the class can improve over the years as she had not taught it in a while
She does not like when you participate in the lecture, she will dismiss your point. She reads from the slides and thats it. She knows a lot about IR but does not know how to teach. She doesn't care about your excuse if you have to miss class. she writes confusing questions on exams and puts 2 of basically the same answer.
I saw a lot of negative reviews on here, and it made me sad. I really enjoyed the course. She's passionate about IR, and I found her tangents interesting. The class was also really easy. If you just read and pay some attention in class, then you're golden. The discussion section was interesting as well, and the assignments for it were very simple.
The only way you are passing her class is if you LOVE reading or if you are interested in politics. class is based on midterms, final, group project. Test is based on the slides and lecture so you must be there to take notes. Her lectures get boring real quick. She makes confusing test questions, doesn't post the slides till a week before test.
Prof Roberts is educated in her field, but class structure is tough. She presents slides but talks about other things verbally so be prepared to type quickly. You are graded on 3 tests, a group project, and group reflection. Attendance is not taken in lecture but taken in discussions. Don't be late and use the textbook/readings to study for exams.
She will go on off topic rants during the lecture classes, then speed through the slides too quickly. She only posts the slides a week before exams & yells if you take pictures of them. Graded based on 3 tests, a group project and a group reflection. Harsh grading. If you participate & say something she disagrees with good luck. Tons of readings.
I used a hilarious tag because i find it hilarious that this woman is allowed to be a professor.
I can care less how many people she's met or what she done in her career, especially when class time is spent speaking about herself. If you want spend your time watching a woman who loves to hear herself talk and could honestly care less about you, take her class. Hate that I wasted my time on this I'd rant about her other issues if I could.
By far the worse professor I ever took. Professor Roberts does not teach instead spends most of the class boasting on her career accomplishments. Do not take this professor!
she doesn't let you take pictures of the slideshow, and will call you out if you do, her exams are mostly based off the textbook and slides. She is strict and will talk about random topics, that are not related to her class.
If you can feed her ego and past those tests, youll do fine. Its literally the first test, midterm and final. No homework. She likes to TALK. Just let her. Do that group project. Make your own study sheets cause she wont prep you on what the test will even look like, multiple choice is her go. Be charming, smile and nod. Youll be alright.
