extremely helpful!!
Her reviews are the best. Extremely helpful. Can't wait to have her myself.
One of they best teachers I've ever had. Extremely helpful and interesting
Very passionate about teaching - best kind of professor. She offers unlimited rewrites to improve students' writing and grades only on the last draft.
She is very helpful, kind and very considerate! Highly reccomended for any class she is teaching!
An awesome prof! Wants to help you do well in class. New state requirements have added enough material to the class that it should probably be 2 semesters long; that's why I rated this class as kinda hard. The prof is worth it though!
So animated and passionate about teaching! Almost always a crowd outside her office waiting to talk.
very kind and caring professor. i would definitely recommend her....
I had her in Spring 2003. She's very passionate about teaching, and she tries hard to be articulate. Very warm person also.

Very sweet professor, nice to talk to and very knowlegable. Highly recommended.
Very warm personality. Course work isn't too tough since she allows unlimited rewrites in the pursuit of teaching proper writing skills. A shame that the semester I had her, my classmates did not take full advantage of her incredible knowledge, mistaking her enthusiastic teaching style as quaint lunacy. The course suffered from the class's mistake.
I have had prof R for hum2b art history, business ethics, philosophy of science, History of England and Humanities senior seminar. If you get a chance to talk to this woman, take it. She is an insight into what an ideal human would be like.
she is a terrible teacher. Her socialist ideals really come through in her snide remarks against everything this country was founded on. If you are one to speak your mind and feelings (like we are supposed to) and people would describe to the right of the left, dont take her, you will prolly fail. she WILL NOT accept an idea different then hers.
VERY kind and intelligent. Will help you if you ask (especially for late work). She has some ideas that are not necessarily mainstream, but she does not ask you to agree with them, just listen to them. PARTICIPATE!! It will help. She also likes modern rock music, so talk about it.
Cynthia is the most knowlegable teachers i've had. Her love of teaching and learning is evident every letcture. Every lecture i have learned something new, or thought of things in a new way. This is what a teacher should be like. If you don't want to think, don't take her courses, they aren't for the weak minded. She grades fairly and is more
She's demanding, but if you follow her instructions you'll do well!
I had Professor Rostankowski for my first semester Hum Hnrs class freshmen year and was having a difficult time adjusting to college life. She is very understanding, allows for multiple rewrites of papers, and is happy if you comprehend the material than simply a grade. Her final and midterm review sessions are a lifesafer ! Highly reccomended.
She is a very nice and interesting teacher. Attendance is not mandatory, but it definitely helps to go to class. The first half of the class is philosophy and the second is literature. Go to ask for help in this class because it will allow her to get to know you. Try to bring your book to class everyday (even if you don’t think it is necessary)
A very downgrading teacher. I had a rough time that semester, and she talked to me as if I were a complete failure in everything I did.
One of my best professors. Lectures give you context for everything you read, plus society, history and art. Bring your books when asked and TAKE NOTES, exams are mostly from lecture but open book for essays. Rewrites ok for papers. Helpful. She loves her students, excited about subject.
She didn't give back any of the 10 journals we wrote over the entire semester. It's hard to correct/re-write your work when it's returned weeks later or not at all. She also critized me for turning a paper in on time that was not my "best work." She would have preferred for me to create a well-written, LATE paper then a paper turned in on time.
WORST professor I have had in my college career. She was 15 minutes late for EVERY class, she even showed up late for the final. Very disrespectful! Her lectures were incoherent at times and her tests focus on information that was barely mentioned in lecture. She says you can rewrite all papers; that doesn't help if you never get them back! AVOID!
Prof Rostankowski is one of the most interesting and caring professors I've had at SJSU. She will give you much of her time in office ours and outside class to make sure course material is both clear and meaningful. For example, in addition to providing a study guide for the final, she also held an extra final study session. Highly recommended!
Horrible teacher. Loves the sound of her own voice, unclear on essay instructions, extremely hard grader, treats student like children, takes everything very personally, does not allow good class discussion its like being in a second lecture. Shuts down ideas of students in order to make herself seen smarter.Slow grader.DEAR GOD AVOID THIS TEACHER.
Nice lady, TERRIBLE teacher. Can't explain anything to save her life. Can't get the attention of the class (of 100+) so she just starts talking, we always miss the first 5 minutes of her lecture. Takes everything personally. Takes FOREVER to grade/hand back papers. Shares class w/ 2 other profs, uses all the time. Avoid this woman like the plague
Her assignments are often unclear, and she expects the BEST out of them. There is NO chance you'll be able to BS anything. On the other hand, if you go to her office hours she walks you through EVERY LITTLE STEP. So if you have to take this class MAKE SURE you go to her office hours...otherwise I wouldn't recommend her.
Extremely nice, but she can't explain the concept. She can talk for an hour without ever answering the question. She's very passionate about her topic, but I wouldn't recommend her as a teacher. If you say something is "good" be ready to define "good." Get familiar with her schedule because you'll be spending a LOT of time in her office asking Qs.
WHAT THE HECK IS SHE SAYING??? Cannot explain concepts. Says "um" all the time and goes off on tangents mid sentence. Very defensive when approached. Slow grader. If you have no choice but to take her class, memorize her answers to study guide and write them word 4 word.
Prof. Rostankowski is awesome. I hated Hum 1A cause I did so horribly in it and I thought I wouldn't do any better in this class. I was also very scared of her in a way cause she's intimidating. But when I visited her office hours, she was so nice and helpful. As long as you do put in the hard work and go to her office hours, you will pass the clas
DO NOT TAKE her unless you have to. she is UNCLEAR, LATE returning assignments, takes FOREVER to explain a concept, and when she's done no one "gets it". You must write the EXACT wording on your tests. I must say that she is only the 2nd teacher ever that I would NEVER take again. Run, Forrest, run!! PS: These are the FACTS- not just frustration.
Very educated professor. One of the best in the department. Work can be difficult at times, and sometimes she expects too much from her students, but overall a good teacher.
Read the text and come to class. Otherwise, you will not feel good about the class. SHe is always willing to help, and she's pretty relaxed about her due dates
Most helpful & caring professor I met at SJSU. Her class was extremely interesting and she's so passionate about teaching. Most importantly, she does whatever is in her power to help students succeed. Go to office hours to ask for help whenever you are trying to understand any abstract concepts. Her class is challenging, but many people get A's.
Scatterbrained, hard to follow her lectures, and her seminar section is worse. She Brought up the Budget cuts for at least 30 minutes each class. Talks really fast. Almost no class participation, just her rambling during seminar. Never returned most of the work we turned in. If you go to her office hours, make sure to be early, there will be a line
Very intelligent professor, and very well- equipped to teach humanities. However, doesn't like hearing any opinions different from hers. Very particular in how you word things and hard grader. Extremely condescending and uptight. Disrespectful to students who don't share her views. Not recommended.
Very passionate professor. She is sometimes not clear on things, but if you do not understand something she will help you understand step by step. you HAVE to work hard to get an A though, she is not an easy grader. And PARTICIPATE!
you can tell she totally cares about humanities, and her students for that matter. very passionate. honestly, not that hard of a grader. participate in class and do all the assignments and you will be fine. tends to go off on tangents in class, but other than that, a great professor.
Has an amazing breadth & depth of knowledge combined with compassionate nature. There is often a wait to speak to her during office hours because she is so helpful to students. Challenged me to rethink material I thought I'd already mastered, with great results. If you love learning, you must take her upper division HUM coursework -- she's great.
She may be scatter-brained at times but she's truly one of the most brilliant and caring professors at SJSU. Go into her office hours! She's extremely helpful and really wants you to succeed.
Very passionate professor and very willing to help you. I think she can seem intimidating compared to the other Humanities professors, but she's a lot different than I expected. I love how much she knows, it's really impressive. If you listen and ask the right questions, you'll learn a lot from her.
At first, she seems very strict about assignments and intimidating, but it turns out she's an easy grader. She is very helpful and nice during her office hours (and she has many different hours as well). She is very slow at grading and returning assignments, but that's understandable as she's very busy.
Her class is absolutely awful, she is actually awful. She grades you based off of how much she likes you personally and she is on the verge of insanity. Don't take her class unless you want to rip your hair out,or hers.
THIS TEACHER IS AWFUL. SHE IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL AND IS VERY RUDE. SHE TAKES EVERYTHING PERSONALLY, AND NEVER HANDS BACK YOUR WORK. SHE IS VERY UNCLEAR ABOUT ASSIGNMENTS AND BLAMES THE STUDENTS FOR HER MISTAKES. SHE CONSTANTLY PUTS DOWN HER STUDENTS TO MAKE HERSELF FEEL BETTER. BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD, AVOID THIS TEACHER
At first she seemed really nice and helpful, but as the course went on her lectures became confusing and unclear. She gets upset if you don't agree with her. She never gives back papers. She gives one midterm and one final and both are ridiculously long. The study guide will have almost 100 terms and you'll end up using like 30 of them.
Always has an open office door (literally and figuratively) even when well outside of her posted hours. Never be scared to ask for help as you will find she will give you way more than you have expected. Rewrites are allowed and encouraged for all essays. Students' success and growth are the utmost importance for her.
AWESOME! She's super sweet, always willing to help, and great to talk to. Very flexible with deadlines, she's more worried about the quality of your work than getting it in on time. Very passionate about her subject and teaching her students.
Humanities is a tough class, but Professor Rostankowski is a really good lecturer. If you have her seminar, she is willing to answer any questions you may have. She can be a tough grader and she expects a lot from her students, but that is the case for any humanities honors class. (Don't skip and make sure to do all the reading!!!)
Very helpful professor and she knows the subject material like no other. Flexable on deadlines, just put your best foot forward, read, and work hard and you'll be fine. Lectures are long put she can really open your eyes to some remarkable concepts
One of the best professors you will ever have. Her lectures are influential. The reading material can be difficult, but she breaks it all down clearly. Group Speech, 2 exams (essay and short answer), Group Project, 2 essays, tons of reading (7 required books and numerous short readings). Be sure to understand how the readings all connect.
Professor Rostankowsi is amazing her office is always open. She has high standards and expects you to reach them, but she will support you.
This class makes me hate my life. If you are a full-time student, you may fall behind in this course. Tests are essay style, there is so much reading, and lectures are fast and boring. I wish I hadn't registered for this course.
Her honors class is no joke. If you decide to take this class, be prepared to do a ton of reading. There aren't that many assignments but they mostly difficult papers that require previous readings and research. She is a fair grader and her office is always open. Ask questions! Also be prepared to the midterms/finals as they are quite difficult.
Her honors program, in my opinion is not worth it. The workload matches that of an honors course, but you will not be officially recognized as an honor student by the school. I highly recommend you explore what the program has to offer before committing an entire school year to it.
Rostankowski is a nice professor. Unless you're into the social sciences (philosophy, ethics, science), then take this class. There's 2 exams (essay & long answers), 3 papers (she has to approve your thesis) and a group presentation. Readings are very sophisticated. I strongly suggest that you create a group to keep up in this class.
Being an honors-level course, HUM177A's standards are set higher. If yours are also set high, you will receive the grade you EARN. More than that, you will gain much knowledge that you can apply in many other courses and in life. Dr. R. teaches students to look deeply at the world in which they live. I feel privileged to have taken her class.
Her expectation on the long-answer free-response final: 15 pages, 5 per question you free-write for. No bathroom breaks, no getting out of the seat, no opening backpack for an eraser. I would also like to point out that you should be reading on average 40+ pages before a lecture. Don't take her unless you want a challenge for your 6-unit credits
Professor Rostankowski has decent philosophy lectures, but her seminars are mostly her answering questions we have. She is lenient on deadlines for papers as she expects a high quality paper. Beware it may take at least a month to receive feedback on papers as she has many university responsibilities, but that aside she is very kind and helpful!
You either hate her or you love her. She does expect high quality papers which is fine because hey it's college. She will help you fix it and extend the deadline for full credit but its hard to pinpoint what exactly she expects and wants (expect many rewrites). She is very smart but is also intimidating and hard to please. Be prepared, hard class.
If you feel like being confused and like being frustrated over disorganization then this class is for you! every lecture is something new and you will not understand anything she is saying because the main point of her lectures is to hear herself speak. if you have an opposite opinion than what she has stated, be prepared to be wrong.
Her lectures are super packed with information that she's basically throwing at you. Seminar is the time to ask any and all questions you can possibly think of. She's a VERY FAIR GRADER. You get what you deserve. If you learn the content and can make connections -- no matter how small -- you'll succeed greatly.
It was intimidating in finding out that she's the head of the Hum department but honestly, she's super lenient/understanding when it comes to assignment deadlines. Very slow grader as she has a lot of activities outside of class. Believes and cares for her students. Her lectures tend to be more inspirational than the other hum honors professors.
Very passionate prof. who is very knowledgeable about the topics in this class. Very lenient with accepting classwork as well as a lenient grader. Class is challenging but if you are willing to work, you should be able to pass. Was able to do so without the textbook (though I wouldnt suggest it). PARTICIPATE. If she knows you, shell grade nicer.
Very understanding professor and was lenient, which is great especially during a pandemic! She knows her stuff and offers great feedback. She understood some of the struggles we had during an online semester and was very willing to help us out to make things easier.
She can never be wrong. You must adjust YOUR way of thinking and match hers. This class was so confusing, there were assignments all over the place on different topics. This GE class was my lowest grade. She just wants to have power over students and makes this class more important than it actually is. If you want to take this class for ez GE, DONT
Wanna take this class? Let this be a reminder to not! Her teaching is absolute garbage. She will never grade on time, very lazy. Expect to wait a couple months on that. Her lectures are one of a kind, not a good one. Her definitions on a lot of words are different from yours, expect that. Do not be fooled from all the great ratings.
If you are thinking about taking this class then dont save yourself. The Professor takes months to grade the assignments and is never wrong. You have to agree with all her thoughts because again she is never wrong. Her way of helping can only confuse you instead of actually helping you. I wish I was allowed to write more I have so much to say.
Cool teacher, Cynthia is very understanding and extremely knowledgeable. Will help you if needed. Did not attend office hours as her after class discussion was enough. Very bright lady with quick responses and witty replies. Even when students say some outlandish things she is able to comprehend and break it down. Great.
Not sure why she has so many awful reviews. She is caring, respectful, and I learned so much. She does take a while to grade assignments but (for our class) she accepted any late work because she doesnt believe in taking away points from a students hard work just for submitting past the deadline. I thought that was really sweet.
The honors program is a great way to get rid of the R-S-V reqs needed to graduate. The class is well thought out and organized. If you watch the lectures you can pass the tests. There is a huge review before the midterm and finals and that gives you everything you need to get high marks. Take a while to grade, but is willing to extend time 4 you.
The honors program is a great experience. You can easily pass if you put in the effort. Weekly quizzes based on lectures, midterm/final M/C and 5 essay questions. Thorough review done ahead of time. EXTREMELY SLOW GRADER! Midterm grade not given until after class ended. Great program, highly recommended, just don't county on quick grading.
This class is great to complete RSV classes. Class was structured pretty well, but what really got me were her lectures. She is aware she has too much material, so instead of cutting it down, she crams it all into one long lecture that often goes over the time it would be for a class. She's very nice and encourages discussion and participation.
Starting off, she takes attendance every class period. Overall, she basically talks the whole entire class period and when it comes to essays she will talk about the previous essay we did while talking about upcoming essays. She doesn't give good feedback either. She acts like we haven't written specific types of essays before which is so annoying.
At first she's vert nice till you get stuck in her class. She assigns lots of readings on top of over an hour lecture video and expects us to do it all within little time. But as the semester went on she was very disrespectful , said I had depression bc my grandpa passed and my mental caused me to not do well. DON'T TAKE HER UNLESS HAVE TO
Just Don't. Despite my efforts to improve (personal issues affecting my attendance), I encountered difficulties. She agreed to cooperate, but our interactions devolved into lengthy, disrespectful lectures when I attempted to address my areas for improvement. Overall, her demeanor was consistently disrespectful and rude. I recommend avoiding her.
Extremely hard grader at times. Have always prided myself in my abilities to write, and she made me feel like a complete novice. She would often forget what feedback she intended to give vs what feedback she actually gave. Frustrating because it often left me confused on what she wanted/didn't want. Attendance is absolutely mandatory
Prof. R is a very intelligent individual and the insights she gives really makes you think. She has high expectations for students but sort of leaves you to figure it out on your own. Her lectures are fast paced, packed with info and hard to follow.
I thought this class would be an easy writing class but she is a tough grader. She was nice at first but later on, she spoke to me as though I was a child. She always had feedback for my essays but they were not helpful. We met up once to talk about my essays and it just led to some back and forth discussions. Attendance is MANDATORY.
program was great. couldn't stand her though
She does not give good feedback, and is usually bland but at the same time, expects perfection. if you dont get a thesis or something right the first time, instead of offering pointers or feedback, she just says "this isnt right, do it again" which puts you right back at square one with no feedback at all.
Expectations are very unclear, and your grade can drop at any moment! Hard to reach outside of class. Not the best class for anxious students
This professor's grading is extremely harsh and she's not very helpful. I've written many papers before, but she makes it so difficult to even start one. No matter how much effort students put in, our papers are always marked as wrong because they don't meet her expectations. She also doesn't provide clear guidelines or a rubric for students.
This is a humanities professor that I wouldnt recommend to anyone. Her grading style is inconsistent, she offers poor to no feedback on papers, & communicating with her outside of class is next to impossible. Her guidance consists of "you're going to have to figure it out," or just disrespectful & rude regarding our work.....I use to love writing.
This class has been my toughest class at SJSU and this is only due to the professors expectations. She's very unclear and not helpful with her students. Nothing is up to her expectations. Mind you this is a senior class where we have all wrote numerous paper by now if we got up to this point. But to her it's not to her expectations.
THE WORST professor ever. Completely degrading to her students and just. Impolitely tells you you're wrong either way . No guidance. Completely only thinks she's correct and things have to be exactly her way. Whatever you learned throughout your past education life ignore it. She'll tell you that you're completely incorrect. Don't take her guys.
Absolutely do not take this professor. When creating our thesis she gave a majority of the class a 10/50. Absolutely impossible to come close to her expectations. She forgot about her own class one day and never showed up. She is extremely unclear/contradicting. Meetings with her will get nowhere. Her comments on the FEW assignments are unhelpful.
There was no syllabus posted throughout the course.Grades assignments days/weeks later, she states when grading will be done.Has repeated assignments in grade book. Although she does let you resubmit assignments they don't meet her standards/expectations. No rubric was given for any assignment. Feedback is vague.
Worse teacher ever. DONT recommend her to anyone. Didn't have a syllabus and verbally abusive to her students then lashed out to a student complaining about our class saying we're so disrespectful to her and was victimizing herself when she was disrespectful to us the whole time and we were quiet and taking it. Also grades horribly. Save yourself.
