Cynthia is a great instructor. She's very clear, gives great explanations and descriptions, and is a lot of fun.
Cynthia is passionate about microbiology. More instructors should be like her. She expected a lot and knew how to excite us to learn. Great job! I wish I could take more classes with her.
Wonderful teacher! I would highly recommend her for any science course.
This was a fun intro course to cell biology. Compared to the other bio instructor, Berger, she is much more precise and informative. She knows her stuff and makes sure you understand it as well! She made the class fun.
I do NOT like her teaching style. I think it is more important to teach students then try to trip them up at this early level. She does keep the class interesting but her testing methods are questionable!!!
GREAT Professor!! Just loved her!! SHe is passionate and Knows her stuff and delivers well!! Wish she taught all of my classes
Cynthia is the best teacher I've ever had, and I have attended a Big 12 University. She loves what she does and knows her stuff. She cares about each individual student and takes the time to address them individually. I wish I could take more classes from her! AWESOME! TAKE HER CLASSES!
Cynthia is a great teacher - very prepared and real-life material oriented. Drawing from her personal experience, the class and lab included a great deal of material that can directly be applied to healthcare professions. Be prepared for quite a bit of work.
great class, great teacher. i took the 8 week class, couldn't miss ANY time, but who would want to anyway!
Ms. Schauer is the BEST teacher I have had hands down. I have attended several universities and many community colleges. She is fair, caring, and helpful. This definately doesn't mean easy. You have to work for a good grade but she is there to assist you and encourage you all the way. She makes biology FUN!!! Who would have thought?
GREAT PROF...really cares about students, very knowledgeable, if u put in the time, she will do everything in her power to help you. she will spend a whole lecture talking about one thing in cell biology if it helps you to understand micro. It is a very difficult class, but if u put in the time you can do well, and it will help you esp in ur work
Very caring teacher. She is always there when you have a question or need help. She makes teaching and her students a priority. The class is hard and a lot of work, but Cynthia is a great teacher
I thought she was extremely hard. She didn't explain things as well as the other teacher sitting in on our class did during our tutoring. We had quizzes each class period and never got to keep them to study because she supposably has a very 'sophisticated grading system' for tests.
You will walk away with almost too much knowledge of Microbiology if you take her class. She expects a lot out of her students so keep up with the work. Take advantage of her availability it will only help you. Her class is a lot of work, but I will not forget the things I've learned.
Cynthia is an amazing professor. She works very hard to be available and to make sure that we understood what was expected of us. I really enjoyed her class. There is a lot of work, but this isn't high school!
She is the best teacher I have ever had. She makes her class fun and interesting. Her class is alot of work, at times seems overwhelming. However she is always there to help.
very passionate about this class. wants you to be as passionate and willing to help you succeed.
She was SO hard. Her lectures are unorganized, and i don't know WHERE she gets her test questions from! b/c about 5 of them were from the lecture. SUCH a hard class.
Great teacher, Knows her biology. And she is HOT HOT HOT,
This class was really hard! But, the teacher was helpful. Good thing I passed the course. Overall Ms. Cynthia is a great person.
She is very knowledgeable and she tries very hard in the lab to make sure everyone understands. I would advise going to the study table as it is a great place to get any extra answers. Also be creative on the poster board -- she wants to see something unusual, not the effectiveness of vinegar on microbial growth.
Excellent instructor. She clearly loves what she does, and she cares about the students. It's a hard subject, but she tries to explain in a way that is practical. I highly recommend her!
Way unorganized. Too much work for a level 130.
Micro with Cynthia was frusturating at times, the class and content is difficult but Cynthia is amazing and if you put in the time she will help you get thru it.....I still remember the content a year later...And the nights I stayed up studing.
Super helpful! Very comfortable feel! If anyone had problems understanding something she would go over it again and make sure everyone knew what she was talking about and super friendly!
She is an AMAZING teacher! The class is pretty difficult, but if you are prepared to work hard, you will learn a ton! The class was required for me, and I'm very glad it was! Very geared toward nursing and premed students.
Great instructor. She loves the subject and cares about the students.
Cynthia does a great job explaining the material. The work for class and lab is explained clear and she is always there to answer any questions you may have. She truly cares for her student, like no other professor I ever had.
I'll warn you that the first day of class you are going to feel overwhelmed. A lot is thrown at you at once, but you'll find that this class is not hard if you have prior biology experience. Cynthia is a very sweet lady and cares about her students. She explains things well and is passionate about her work. The class is very interesting.
Cynthia made microbiology super interesting and helped relate subject matter to real life. She's very funny and extremely resourceful. There is a large workload for this class but Cynthia's organization helps a lot.
I loved Cynthia. She was a great teacher. If you need help ask her! She wants you to pass the class it she wants you to challenge yourself. I found a new found interest in microbiology after taking this course. However the book doesn't match up to lectures very well so GO TO CLASS!
Cynthia is a fantastic teacher, passionate about the subject, and clarity of teaching!
She is extremely unorganized...I understand dates and rules can change..but this was ridiculous. She hated on WMU students, she was just absolutely ridiculous..
Cynthia was a good professor! Hadnt knowing anything about microbiology prior to this course, she made it really fun and pretty easy. I did not use the book very often, and her exams were based right off of lecture notes. Probably my favorite class of the semester and really learned a lot!
Fantastic teacher. The subject isn't easy but she is there for you all semester. Very fair. Great class.
This class isn't easy but it isn't hard if you put a moderate amount of time and energy into it. You will come out with a working knowledge of microbiology. Cynthia is an excellent teacher with a clear passion and wealth of knowledge of the subject.
This class isn't easy but it also isn't hard if you are ready to put in a moderate amount of work. Cynthia is an excellent teacher but you have to be willing to do some critical thinking; she is not just going to feed you answers.
Cynthia is an excellent teacher and is very fair. She does expect you to work and do some critical thinking. You cannot coast in this class and still do well.
Cynthia is AWESOME!! I never write these reviews but I wanted to for this class because she is fabulous! She actually makes the subject material make sense! She has a real passion for what she teaches! Shes very prompt at answering emails and is EXTREMELY helpful!! I am hoping to have her again as an instructor!
Cynthia is a really nice and knowledgeable lady. She doesn't use the book so I wouldn't waste your money. She is all over the place when it comes to when things are due or whats going on in the class in general. Shes really frustrating in regard to any type of class schedule and you have to remind her of things several times.
Cynthia is an awesome instructor!! I am sad this will be my last class with her! I took her for both Cell Biology and Microbiology and really enjoyed her class! She is super smart and really cares about the students doing well, and wont let you give up!! Her lectures are interesting, and labs are so much fun!
Professor Schauer is a passionate, compassionate person. She is patient beyond measure and helps students succeed. She fosters a place of learning, not just spitting out the right answers. Schauer encourages questions, not just perfection. She takes classes out of her profession so she understands being clueless!Awesome person in and out of class!
This professor goes too fast and has high expectations.
Cynthia is a very good professor. She is very passionate in her work and knows her stuff. If you don't put in the work and don't study you will not do well in this class. She is the one of the best instructors at KVCC.
Cynthia is completely scatterbrained. She adds new assignments randomly and due dates change all the time, so you get confused by all of her confusion. Takes forever to grade. Exams hardly reflect lecture at all. Talks above what most people even know yet, like we are already microbiologists, when we're actually there to LEARN.... Horrible teacher.
This was by far the worst class of ALL my classes offered at KVCC. This Instructor talks way above your head. Doesn't offer any extra credit to help you out and if you let her know you are struggling she will tell you straight to your face that you should reconsider your goals for the future!!! Horrible
Cynthia is a very great instructor, she really does her best to get everyone involved! I enjoyed her class very much, but I'm not much of a morning person. So my brain was only half awake! Very sweet lady!
Cynthia expects you to already know the material in class before learning it,and when you ask questions she makes you feel stupid and says you should already know the answer and tells you to ask class members for the answer. very scatterbrained jumps from topic to topic. i learned absolutely nothing from her, i learned more by teaching myself.
She is very scatter brained. Although she knows her stuff her lecture is all over the place which makes it hard to take good notes. She makes up and writes her own quizzes with a lot of trick questions, so read the questions carefully! She will expect you to read and fully understand the class information before coming to class. Very hard Class!!!
Cynthia will see you for what you are. Don't take her classes if they're a check in the box for your degree program. But if you're passionate, and actually care about the subject matter, Cynthia is an incredible leader help you realize your goals. She WILL let you know if you aren't cut out for the field. Which is a much needed trait in a teacher
I gave Cynthia some credit for being encouraging but her tests are ridiculously hard and she is not approachable in lab for questions. Her midterms and final exams are beyond what anyone should be expected to know, and when you ask a question in lab she will only tell you that you're not correct and walk away instead of being more supportive.
I loved Cynthia and the way she taught her class. She lets you know she's there for you the whole way through. You definitely won't float through cell biology because it's not an easy subject but if you do the work as she suggests and participate in class you'll be fine. She's so passionate about what she teaches, a truly awesome professor.
Cynthia doesn't play, she expects you to pre-read the material before coming to class each day. Then in class she expects participation. She will ask you questions. She tries to guide u to the answer but is often confusing how she does it. She was very helpful outside of class. She seems intimidating but is truly a kind soul. Ask & she will help.
Cynthia really makes sure you know she is there to help you at anytime. She even came to our study group on a Sunday in her personal time. She expects you to work at learning, not just show up. Anyone saying she's a bad professor wasn't willing to put the work in. Tests are a little tricky, be careful.
She is the sweetest professor, she is kind of difficult but if you listen and study you will be fine.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. This class was SO hard. I studied all the time. Cynthia's lecture is all over the place and it makes it very hard to take good notes. She's very scatterbrained and her lecture is confusing with the powerpoint she makes. She won't help you very much in the lab. Wish I could explain some more but I ran out.
You have to make sure that you attendant class throughout the entire 8 weeks. Lecture is something that you don't want to miss because almost every week you have a quiz due that's based off lecture. Taking notes is always the best so that you can go over your notes and be sure to pass your quiz. Didn't use the book as much so i wouldn't get it.
Cynthia was a great teacher! She always answered your questions without making you feel like an idiot, like most teachers. She was so understanding and caring!! She is also funny, which is a plus! Apply yourself and you shouldn't have one problem!
This professor takes the time to invest in her students even outside of the classroom semesters later. She is kind, caring, and very compassionate. I took her for micro and it was a lot however she was willing to explain things. I would love to have her as a professor again if I had to take more science classes. She is one of a kind.
This course is tough and she expects a lot out of you. You need to put in extra time outside of class and dedicate yourself. Follow the study guides and go more in depth and you will be fine. Shes awesome and very passionate, which is inspiring. Shes approachable and helps to keep everyone organized. Ive learned a great deal from her.
Cynthia is one of the best professors ive ever had. She is extremely caring, and will go out of her way to help. Micro is a very challenging course, but if you are willing to put in the effort it wont be as bad.
I would never take her again. No idea where she pulls her information from. I was in class everyday and took notes and downloaded power points. still failed.
Extremely unorganized lecture, notes on board badly organized or drawn. Power points made badly without main info that we will be tested on it, mostly a bunch of pics she copies from web. Does not make it clear what you will be tested on. Adds a bunch of extra info/stories to lecture instead of focusing on test content. Friendly lady tho
Cynthia Schauer is THE most competent instructor I have had at KVCC. I am a 5th year senior at WMU and I've taken a few classes here to get credit on the cheap. From my experience, she teaches a rigorous course on par with university standards. If you value the quality of your education, look no further. Cynthia knows her stuff extremely well.
If you fail one exam, it's hard to get your grade back up. I felt like I was supposed to know everything before I took the class. She knows her stuff but it was hard to keep up, I feel like the slides and what she wrote down were never on the quizzes or were worded so bizarre you overthink the question. my reports were good but not good enough4her
Save both your mental health and your GPA and skip Cynthia. If you want to feel belittled, worthless, and talked to like you're stupid: this is the place for you! No seriously, I would rather change my entire major than take another class with her. Exams are worth 50% of your grade so let's hope you ace every one of them!
She was hard for me to follow, the lecture notes/videos seemed a bit sloppy. She definitely cares about her students and holds them to a high level. Which I am very thankful for because I know classes will be harder than this and she wants to prepare you. As long as you apply yourself you will do just fine.
I needed this class to get into my program and I shouldve gone to SMC. Dont waste your time, energy, or money taking her class. She doesnt help when you ask, is unclear on expectations/doesnt give feedback, and you wonder where questions come from on exams/quizzes. I will never take one of her classes again. Prepare to fail if you take her.
DO NOT take this teacher. Lectures are all over the place, goes off on tangents which make lecture harder to follow, treats students like theyre in a masters level course. When half of your class is not understanding the directions on half the assignments, you need to change how you teach. If you have a question on anything, expect the run around.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. I felt the homework load was a lot more then I expected for an 130 level class. It was suggested to spend 20 hours a week on Micro, that is so difficult as an adult with bills to pay. I also disliked that exams were 50% of the overall grade. Difficult class.
This is a terrible class. The lectures are the most disorganized videos i have ever seen. You get put in groups weekly, even though this is a asynchronous class and you'll get bad grades if others perform poorly. The tests/quizzes are absolutely ridiculous. The point system is terrible everything is out of 100 big or small. Take a different teacher
Save your money and your mental health and pick a different prof. Nothing was clearly explained and she would answer your questions not clearly. Exams are worth 50% of your grade and theres 4 of them. Its very hard to get your grade back up.
Her instructions are very unclear often which makes it difficult to complete lab assignments. Exams are a major part of the grade so even if you get all A's on every quiz, homework, discussion, etc. but don't do well on exams, you may not pass. Not the world's most difficult instructor, but wouldn't take again.
She is very kind and cares about her students; however, her class structure is very disorganized and difficult to follow. Her lectures only provide the bare minimum of explanation, but her exams are much more detailed, specific, and far more difficult than the lecture quizzes. I would recommend any other instructor, if at all possible.
This was an online-hybrid class; we only met for lab. She is very nice and funny. Extremely smart and wants you to succeed. I struggled at first, but if you take this professor, be sure you utilize her lectures+visualizer videos, where she draws out what is happening in the cell. HELPED CHANGE MY GRADE COMPLETELY! Lenient with grading.
Cynthia was honestly one of the best professors I've had. I took this online and met in person for lab. She is so motivating and truly wants her students to succeed. I wouldn't have wanted to take this class with any other professor. Put in effort and you will do fine. Ignore the bad reviews, she's the best!!!!
She was a very kind professor and I absolutely loved her class. I wish she would have gone into more detail on some things but I feel like I was able to get a good base on what I was supposed to be learning.
She is an amazing teacher but the class is very difficult. Make sure you are ready for a lot of homework with weekly quizzes and 4 exams. Even if you do great on the homework/quizzes, beware that your grade will drop significantly if you are not a great exam taker as these are 50% of your grade! Very lecture heavy so be ready for some reading!
This professor was very difficult, unreliable and condescending. Spoke down to students, took forever to respond to messages or emails (if she ever responded at all) and wasnt very helpful with any questions that she did answer. She was curt and her answers often didnt answer the question or was being irritated that we even asked. Not great.
Nice lady, but very hard class. Have to be willing to dedicate yourself to all the lectures, quizzes, and lab reports. Since exams and quizzes are 50% of grade, my best advice is to study from the study guides and exam reviews because that is exactly what is on the tests. It is doable, I got an A and took it online, but it definitely was difficult.
Take notes on everything! Read the book! I took notes on every lecture, read every chapter, did flashcards, went to study groups, and still recived a 3.5 taking my overall 4.0 average of all of my combined classes down. Exams are 50% of your grade, so study study study. Do every study guide each week, and every exam review. May or may not help. :/
Very caring and wants you to succeed. Class is very hard though so online was not great for me. It got confusing. But the professor does do zoom calls and gives great advice.
Not helpful, EXTREMELY DISORAGNZED, grades were very brutal. I considered changing my whole career after this professor, she specifically made me never want to work in healthcare.
She is a very kind lady and cares a lot about her students. However, this course is very difficult and you must be prepared to dedicate a lot of time towards it. Exams are worth 50% of your grade so be prepared to STUDY. Labs are fine, she sometimes goes through things fast and is hard to follow, but is willing to help if you fall behind.
Extremely sweet lady, but very very disorganized! The quizzes have a lot of mistakes (the "correct answer" in the system was actually incorrect so your grade goes down) so you waste a lot of time emailing her so your grade can get fixed. Micro is already hard; choose another professor who will be more streamlined, it will save you time and energy.
Cynthia was a great instructor. She was kind and more than willing to help if you had any personal issues. She has some of the best lectures I've seen during my college career they are so straightforward and her presentation of the information is easily digestable. Great teacher overall and would 1000% take her again
Cynthia is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She genuinely cares about your success and is super open to suggestions about what would make you do better in class. She inspired me to take up a career in microbiology, she's just amazing and if I could take that class again I absolutely would.
Kvcc should be ashamed of themselves for offering this class like they do. The lectures were LOUSY. I spent one week in this class and quickly realized she had set up many of us for failure. The PowerPoint and lectures don't help with some quiz questions; I REFUSED to make it to a test and be caught off guard like that again, BEWARE.
Most people giving the class a bad review have never done any work in their life. This class is not bad. Do the study guides and take notes on the lectures, life will be good. Cynthia is a wonderful person willing to help you and assist you whenever needed. The class is well organized and structured. I conside
Before each test she made sure to have a study day to play a jeopardy game with the class. Very easy to get along with. Never missed a class
Loved Cynthia, loved this class. While her tests were hard she allowed 3x5 notecards and gave us an optional extra test that would replace a previous test grade if we needed it. Lab wasn't bad as long as you showed up every week and made an effort to learn. Very approachable, knowledgeable, and passionate about the subject matter.
