I really like her as a person. She is extremely personable and I like her sense of humor. HOWEVER, you better know Geology or have a strong science background and be able to know what she wants or you will not do well. The tests are way too hard for a beginning class and you have to study, study, and study some more. Oh, did I say study?
She's a little tough at first. There is a lot of material to learn so be prepared to do a lot of studying. The tests are the hardest I have ever taken. Overall she's a good Professor and helps you understand the concepts.
There is a ton of information and studying in this class. Shroba is a really good professor, she can explain challenging concepts in way you can understand. Labs were hard but helped you understand things. Flintstone and I had a good time! I would definetly take another one of her classes!!
Excellent instructor and a Subject matter expert. Approachable.
be ready to take quizes almost every week, the hardest test and exams so far, if you dont have to take the class dont take it.
Fun class!
Lots of work but it's Science, its not supposed to be easy!!! Keep up with the review sheets and questions from book and you'll do fine. Final is right off prior tests, she's chilled out since prior semesters and she's super nice and will help with anything.
The professor seems like a really good person, but I'm not too crazy about her style of teaching. She tries to cram in a ton of information in one class. My head is spinning towards the end of class and I feel like I haven't learned a lot. The exams aren't too bad. The labs are long (about 2 hours usually). I probably would of taken another class.
Great Professor. She gives open book exams that can be hard if, you are not organized. Do review sheets and print out power points to take notes in class. She is fair and if, she sees that people are having a hard time, she gives extra credit. She does require one oral presentation..I am not a fan of that.
Kind of a tough teacher. You should be ready to write a paper, do a speach, and actually do the review work for the open book tests. If you actually put effort into the class, you will do good.
Be prepared to write a paper and give a speech. You actually have to try in this class. Doing the reviews she posts online for the exams will help a lot.
Very interesting class. Ms. Shroba is a great professor if you care more about learning than simply getting an easy A. Her class is challenging but nowhere near impossible. She drops your lowest lab, test, and quiz grades which helps. She also gives you a notecard to use for tests. If you put forth the effort, I guarantee you will get an A.
Dr. Shroba is an excellent professor. All her lectures are powerpoints and easy to follow and she provides them on ANGEL. Class and lab is fairly easy. If any you have any trouble, just ask her for help. Most of the time, she'll answer the question for you or atleast point you in the right direction.
Great lady and a great professor. She really knows her subject and if you put some time in then you will learn a lot. It is a challenging class, but she is always available to talk with if you need some help.
Great teacher. Loves her subject and knows it well. She makes the class interesting and fun. Uses powerpoints which are available in Angel. Has review sheets available for the chapters and works exclusively out of the book, so READ IT! Take good notes and study.
I would not recommend taking this professor for geology 101. I currently have to devote all of my time to her class and I have 3 other classes. I spend hours studying for this class and I still have only a C. Only take her class if you have a LOT of time on your hands.
She is quite possibly the greatest teacher I've ever had. Smart and witty (makes the class fun). Really knows her stuff, so don't try to B.S. this lady. She knows if you don't read your book or study!
She's okay. It mostly depends on how well you can remember what you learned in class and read in the book for the tests. Lecture's boring, but if you put in a few hours of studying the powerpoints&book before each test you'll be fine. If you need a science w/lab, but can't do math, take this class. 3 tests(drops lowest) + final; some HW & quizes.
She is extremely knowledgeable about her subject and will never answer a question with "I don't know." She is very witty and makes class funny at times. She gives you every opportunity to do well in her class: power points online, cheat sheet on 4 tests(drop lowest), open book quizzes, help sessions outside of class. If you TRY you will do well.
You will go into this class thinking that it is going to be the hardest class ever, you will continue the semester still thinking it, but at the very end you will realize that Shroba is one of the best professors at CSN! You really learn geology with her, and she truly grades off what YOU put into the class. Great point system. Great subject.
awesome teacher! very helpful and has extra credit opportunities (which most people desperately need) all of the notes are on angel but its important to show up to class or youll miss alot. she drops a couple low grades in lecture and lab. she will let you touch the mantle if you ask :)
This was definately one of the hardest classes I have had but Shroba is also the best teacher I've ever had! As long as you study and come to class you can pass this class. 4 tests drops your lowest test score and is willing to help if you go to office hours.
Be prepared to use up most of your time studying for this class. If you need this class for your degree, study extra hard for it. She is not very helpful, during her lecture class. Don't bother to ask questions. She will make you feel stupid. Your opinions are not wanted in this class... it's her word against yours.
She is the best teacher ive ever had, she is so helpful. She answers all of my questions, no matter how many i ask. She really knows everything she is talking about and you can tell she loves it. You have to come to class, study, and take good notes. But other than that it is very enjoyable.
for all you people on here saying this professor is a great professor, whatever your on, i want some. she is absolutely horrible. she basically goes out of her way to make this class as hard as it can be. and if your not a geology major, whats the point of studying everyday for this class. i spent virtually all day, everyday studying for this class
She is a great professor, but the tests are REALLY hard. She lets you use a 4x6 card but you don't really know what's going to be in the test. What makes the tests hard is that they have fill in the blank, short essays and diagrams worth from 10-35 points. If you miss 1 or 2 of those you are SOL! Also the geotour hw is 10pts but takes about 1-2hrs.
lol..Good Luck.....you're going to need it
One of the best teachers of CSN!knows what she?s talking about and makes it easy to understand geol.I'm not science oriented person and was hoping for a C but after working hard and extra credit pts received an A!Just attend all classes and pay attention! She gives many chances to succeed.don?t take it if expect an easy A,but extremely interesting!!
Very good professor. She knows what she is teaching and thoroughly enjoys doing it. Anytime I had a question she went above and beyond with her answer, really helping me to understand. Take her if you want to learn. If you want to do well, she wants to give you the opportunity. If you take her class you also get to go on some really neat field trips.
Took her for GEOL 101. Not an easy course. Her tests are difficult, but she drops your lowest score. If you want to do well you will have to study hard and attend class. She has high expectations of her students and accepts no excuses. Offers a lot of extra credit im the form of field trips and bonus points on tests and quizzes. No papers/projects.
Fantastic professor! Everything she teaches is from the lecture, so go to every class. Very knowledgeable. Did i mention she is a Fantastic professor?!
Do not believe all the praise ppl are giving her, this instructor goes out of her way to load you down with a tremendous amount of busy work. You can expect a quiz or test in every other class meeting. You can also expect a fair share of sarcasm from her. Don't say you weren't warned about this potential gpa killer.
Truthfully she is a helpful teacher that I took my first year of college but her class is incredibly hard. Be prepared to learn more by reading then anything else. She gives 4 exams and you can use a 4x6 card and she also gives open book pop quizes. Beware this class is really hard if you don't have a good work ethic.
She is absolutely horrible! Do not take her at all. Her practice review for 3 exams are not useful at all. The review packet is about 100 questions and the actual test is 30 questions. Though she drops an exam i would not recommend her at all. Take another class I got all As in my other classes except for hers. The class average on the exams was 70
For a 101 geology class it was ridiculously hard.
She missed 3-4 classes in one semester & then told us she wouldn't test us on the things we missed, but she still did. I take impeccable notes and still somehow missed the things that she says she told us was on the test. The fact she drops one test is the ONLY reason I got a B for my final grade. SOOO glad this class is over!
This class was very tough! She gives lots of notes and requires you to read each chapter. If you are lazy and don't like to earn your grade don't attend this class. She teaches like a college professor should. She makes you earn your grade. Finished with an A, but studied everyday! Good luck!
Hardest class ever!!! Only advice... STUDY STUDY STUDY. I got a B but I really had to hustle for it. Good luck!
Dr. Shroba is an excellent instructor. She loves geology and does a great job of teaching a difficult subject. It is evident from day one that she wants everyone in the class to do well. She provides multiple extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. The material is difficult but manageable if you come to class, takes notes and study.
shes a good teacher a lil confusing at times but as long as you take notes(what ever she writes down)and study plus use your cheat sheet she allows no way you can fail
Excellent instructor. Nothing is on a test that isn't covered in class; take thorough notes. Very knowledgeable, presents information well. Explains anything a student doesn't understand. Utilizes Canvas. Drops lowest test grade, puts EC points on most tests. HW/attendance not mandatory, but highly recommended. Policies are strictly enforced.
Judging by the number of students enrolled in the class I should've saw the signs, 15 enrolled total. Be prepared to be loaded down with excessive amounts of studying and work. Sit close to the board her handwriting is not always legible. If you are not a geology major good luck because you're going to need it.
Professor Shroba is a great professor! She is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. The class is not easy and you will have to study A LOT! I did enjoy her class. She gave extra credit to help students out and she'd go over tests after wards. Be ready to study! :)
Hardest class i ever took teacher has a monotone voice making the class very boring and many students occasionally slept throughout the class. For tests you have to study real hard to pass
Dr. Shroba is an excellent professor. The first time I took her class I did extremely poor. I studied but didn''t put to much into it. Her test are hard Really hard. I was determined to pass her class. I took it again I was please and this time passes with a B. Open door policy at her office during office hours. Great professor hardest prof
If you want to me a geologist, then take her. She's sweet but will speak in scientific terms. She has her PHD on this subject, so you know she takes this way too serious. She wants to speak about EVERYTHING and we have been behind a chapter because of it, so annoying!
I like Dr. Shroba. She's soft spoken with a wicked sense of humor brimming beneath her professional demeanor. Her tests are the toughest I've ever taken, but I put in the work and my grades reflect that. Take notes, read the textbook, and research concepts on your own. Ask her questions; she won't bite off your head.
Class is tough, reading and rereading is very important to pass. If you put in the work it will show (do not procrastinate) I would only recommend this class to those who have enough time to study and those who are going into the field otherwise, get other opinions and find other options. Just need a lab class? choose another class or teacher.
if you're taking geology because you think it's the easiest of the sciences, HAHAHAHAHA. Put in the required work and go above and beyond to understand concepts and you should be fine. Dr. Shroba is fair and expects her students to put forth the effort. Also, turn off your phone in class. For your sake, do it.
I think Dr. Shroba is a wonderful professor. Reading the book and notes are vital to passing her exams. She is always happy to help anyone who is struggling with a particular concept. Wonderful lady and brilliant geologist. I'm sad the semester is coming to an end. Take Shroba if you want to LEARN and be prepared to work for your grade.
If your not majoring in Geology don't take her class. Average test score out of 50 students is 69% . The hw is optional, if you want to have a chance of passing test, do it. Read the chapters twice or more. Do not procrastinate reading or doing hw you will fail. If you want a real challenge take her class. Her voice is incredibly boring.
I liked learning from Dr. Shroba. Geology 101 isn't as easy as everyone thinks. You're going to need to read, read, and read again. Ask questions! Flash cards will save your butt. Dr. Shroba is an incredibly intelligent geologist; don't be afraid to ask her questions!
Professor Shroba is kind, and very knowledgeable of her material. She is passionate and has good humor to lighten up the class. She does what she can to make sure you understand, you must speak up if you don't. Take notes in class info will be on tests. Tests are based on book, slides, and her lectures. I would take her again.
Professor Shroba is pretty helpful when you need it. I only took her lab class and I didn't find it too difficult, but I heard her lecture section is extremely hard.
Not a boring class but teacher didn't show much enthusiasm during lecture a lot of the time. Went into this class thinking I would like this field, but this class turned me completely off to it. She does make some funny jokes sometimes, though, and is very knowledgeable on the subject.
I had to drop this class so I wouldn't ruin my GPA. I should have read the negative reviews on here before wasting my time and money.
Here's the deal. She uses 95% PowerPoint for her lectures, and 5% of the time she writes a few things on the board. Her test are pretty straight forward. A few things are interesting, some is just blah blah blah. Lab sucks. Very subjective. Overall, Dr. Shroba is funny, but serious when it comes to following directions. She knows all Geology!
Nice person, but as a professor she isn't the best. All of the chapter notes will be up on canvas, but she does write some stuff on the board. Make sure to do the homework because the tests and quizzes are based off of it. 5 tests and she drops the lowest one. Quizzes were given every week. Lab sucked and the grade will be combined with the lecture
She should be teaching at UNLV. Super knowledgeable about geology. Long boring lectures. Answers any question you can ask. Labs are long and terrible. Takes long time to grade assignments. Only 2 people failed class. Grades fair. Show up, pay attention, pass. Cs majors this is not an easy science requirement. two Long papers and presentations.
Professor Shroba is an amazing teacher, I absolutely loved her class. Even her lab was awesome, she truly is a fantastic teacher. She gives you great notes and homework to study, which really helps for tests. This class was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. Professor Shroba gave me the geology bug, she is an amazing teacher!!!
I took Dr. Shroba for both GEOL 101 & 102, and while the class was tough, you can get an A if you make a sincere effort. She will know if you're trying or not (and her level of helpfulness will be based on that). Lot of reading, tests are challenging but manageable. The field trips were awesome. Labs are a lot of work but not bad. Highly recommend
On Test #1 80% of the people in the class got below a C+, 50% did not pass. That should tell you something right there. In addition, she doesn't do a good job with getting students involved with her lectures, she just talks and talks and could careless if the students in her class are comprehending what she is saying. Save your money and avoid her!
Geo major - I had 101 and 102 with her and honestly, she is a patient, wonderful person and she does care about her students a great deal. Yes, the tests are hard and yes, there is a lot of reading, but guess what? This is a college class! Go to office hours, ask questions during lab. She can only help you if you're willing to help yourself first!
Lectures were boring and I could hardly read anything she wrote down. The professor herself is very understanding but her overall class was extremely confusing. She also took very long to grade anything and the hw was barely relevant to the tests that were given. Everything for this class is done online so be prepared.
Favorite professor of my college career, but also the most difficult! Took her for Geol 102 thinking this lower level class would be relatively easy but NOPE! Tons of reading, difficult tests, research papers, the whole nine yards. However, Dr. Shroba is caring, fair, and genuinely cares about the success of her students. If you need help, ASK!
You won't find many professors like her out there. She cares about her students education and does her best to make sure everyone has all the information they need to pass the class. It's not an easy A by any means. Just go to class, do the work, and study a little bit every day and you'll be fine. I'm happy I had the opportunity to learn from her.
This teacher is the worst Ive ever had. Doesnt explain PowerPoints and rambles about things that arent ever really useful. She does give some answers to the weekly homework, but doesnt grade anything until around halfway through the course. The lectures are just her talking about middle points of chapters that you wont be able to understand.
Don't do it!!! This class is set up for you to fail. The lady gives too much work and she can'y even grade everything on time. I'm left guessing what my grade will until school is pretty much over. Not all assignments are not graded at all until the very last minute. She's not organized with testing either. She will leave out what's on the test.
The quizzes are tough. To be best prepared read the chapter of the week before lecture, print the homework early and bring it to class. and just put in the work and the rest is easy, She tests mostly on her lectures and the homeworks which is nice because she's easy to follow and pretty cool. I had her for lab as well, and would 10/10 recommend
Love Dr. Shroba. She is very passionate about geology and it really shows. There are biweekly open book quizzes. Study for rock lab, make a note sheet for it. Put effort into the homework, it will help you more than you'd think. Review homework and quizzes for exams. I'm becoming a geology major because of her. Can't wait to take her 102.
I did not like Dr. Shroba. Quite monotone, although knew what she was talking about. Literally didn't grade any of my assignments until the last month of the semester which is BS. No review on any tests. Randomly is late for class. Etc.
If you absolutely need a lab credited class, avoid this professor. A-B average student and I failed this class... -_-
Monotone lectures are hard to follow, especially when her handwriting is hard to read. Will not give you a review for exams or quizzes. Homework is through Pearson website and where I learned most. I thought I would like this subject but she managed to make volcanoes and rocks boring. I have her for lab too which is okay.
Dr. Shroba is a fine professor who is very passionate about her field. Although she is mostly monotone when lecturing, she can sometimes be funny and is clear when explaining concepts. Homework is easy and she provides optional homework which is helpful when reviewing for exams and quizzes.
She's a lovely person. Really loves what she does and has alot of passion for Geology. She provided our class with a wonderful experience beyond the class room and helped me find the beauty in Geology. That being said, if this is not a class you're trying to major, do not underestimate it. Take down lecture notes, read the chapter, use the slides.
Amazing! Dr Shroba is the best and she really knows her stuff. If you love the outdoors this is the class to take. She is so dedicated to geology and I really aspire to her. As long as you do the work, there should be no problem. Show up to class to learn and take lots of notes! Can not wait to take Geology 102.
This professor is hard to get in contact with, ignores her students, and expects them to do everything on time when she herself can't even grade work from September. I am anxiously still waiting for everything to be graded and I have tried reaching out to her multiple times without a response back. I hear Janine Roza is way better and accessible.
I had this professor as a lab instructor. She is very particular in how she grades your work and expects everything on time, but doesn't hold herself to the same standard. The semester was unorganized and no grades were given until after classes were over. She also doesn't respond to emails.
Worst professor I've has so far. Doesn't really teach, NONE of the study material is on the quizzes. None. I did every study guide and none of the information was on the tests. If you don't understand the lectures, you're screwed. DOES NOT GRADE. I don't even know my grade I just put the B. Labs are horrible, she doesn't grade in a timely manner.
Overall shes not a bad professor. She doesnt grade anything until the very end of the semester which I hate. She holds mandatory zoom calls and just lectures the whole time. I find the tests to be really hard. I would suggest picking another professor before you have to take her class. She knows what shes talking about shes just boring :/
I am in Professor Shroba's class now, 2021 Fall semester. I was checking out professors for the next semester and decided to look at her ratings. I'm truly shocked. I find her to be the most dedicated (always available) caring, capable, Professor, I have ever known. If you want a REAL teacher, don't believe the jibber-jabber here. Toni K Pacini
LECTURE HEAVY if you don't attend the lectures and pay attention you will fail the quizzes. Lectures are quite boring and hard to stay attentive. She never responds to emails even tho she always says to email her if you have questions. Class is pretty much based on quiz grades. Not to say that she isn't passionate about teaching geolg
Free textbook online. Doesnt answer emails, or grade assignments until the very end of the semester. Lectures are on zoom, very dry, not helpful when it comes to lab. Pop assignments during lecture so if you miss it youll miss at least 15pts. Quizzes/exams almost every week all lecture based. Lab saved my grade. Lowest exam score dropped.
Professor Shroba is the baseline of professors, not exactly good or bad. She can be quippy but the lectures tend to drag on. It can be hard to contact her. However the biggest demerit is that she does not grade ANYTHING until after the final is taken. You have no idea what your grade is before then, and caused a lot of issues for me at the end.
Dr. Shroba is a really nice professor, the lectures in my opinion aren't the most entertaining but she grades based on assignments, labs, and exams. She has higher expectations for this class since 101 was a pre-req so get ready for more strict grading. Overall she's really friendly and nice and if you're struggling she's always willing to help.
Took her for my 1 Credit Lab portion for GEOL. 1 Credit, but so much work! Her class and work isn't hard, but it just takes so much time to complete. Doesn't grade anything until the last week of school, so I felt that I was failing her class for the longest. Only reason I took her was bc all of my classes were in Charleston. Do the work or fail.
Great teacher, but please beware of the reading assignments. Homework is minimal and always one page. The only hassle in this class is the reading assignments bc boiiiii are they lengthy. Exams arent hard if you take notes so pace yourself with the chapters and dont fall behind. Other than that awesome teacher
