She is one of the worst teachers i have ever been matched up with! She moves to fast keeps referring to the calculas class which is the next level. I am not taking calculas i dont care. She doesnt teach well at all. I regret taking her. Waste of Money!
Great teacher! Willing to help if you put in the effort.
This teacher is one of the best math teacher i have ever had. SHe goes fast but she very clear and very help you just have to ask.
very hyper.. but that keeps you awake! she explain things so clearly. help you get practice on new things learned that day. actualy takes time to look over the lecture and pick out things you really need to kno. she cares about the students a lot..
What she taught in class was nothing like the tests. It was super hard an 75% of the class dropped
I still can't believe she got a smiley face for her rating. This is very impossible because she is the hardest teacher I ever had. She makes u go to the board and make u feel stupid if u don't understand a problem. Doesn't help/teach very quick/STUDY!
This class was a waste of time and of money. People always say that Shrout was a teacher that moved too fast, but I always thought they were just lazy. Shrout moved way too fast with the material and acted like she had one too many red bulls.
She does move fast in order to cover a lot of course material in just one semester. But she does explain things clearly and I really believe that going to the board after every section she teaches has helped me immensely. If I fail this semester I'd take her class again.
Very weird! Fast pace person. I don't recommend her.
NIGHTMARE!she never asks if you catch what she's saying, never walks around to see if you are doing problems correct not helpful 4u2 pass.Intimidating, arrogant & not friendly. No organized teaching style, all lecture no chance for feedback as a class makes u feel stupid Take someone else PLEASE!
i liked the fact that the class goes up to the board and practiced some problems for most of the class meetings
The biggest complaint seems to be that she moves fast, but there is a lot of material to cover. She devoted herself to making sure each student got as much as they could out of the class. It's a tough course, but she'll cover it as good, if not better than the next teacher.
math is never EASY! but she tries to explain and help out as much as possible. It was really helpful doing the problems on the board.
I think that she tried really hard to help the students. I didn't take advantage of the practice exams she has in the library like I should have but I still passed her class. Also she likes to get everyone up out of the chair to do some math problems on the board. Only thing that sucks is you have to put your name on the board and talk.
She tries to teach students hard but her teaching is not that clear to me. She moves too fast and doesnt take lots of time for the question that we asked about. Her practice exam is not that helpful and homeworks are not that worth towards an A. TOO HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND GET AN A!!
I liked they way she taught it was good. I learned a lot from her
shes great. her style is not like the other professors at cypress. she is always willing to help. she is a bit eccentric, but it keeps you up at 8am in Calculus. You have to study hard (JUST LIKE IN ANY OTHER CLASS!!!). So these people the people that got a bad grade shouldn't blame her...she's super cool.
She goes way too fast! Do not take her!
Man this teacher is really bad. Trust me, not clear at all and goes way too fast. She acts like we know how to do all this in one day. man its hard to learn from this teacher. Do not take her.
SPEED FREAK! she talks so fast through her lectures. She may stop to say "ok?...ok" and continues on. I absolutely do not recommend her for anyone. i dont know how she fills up the whole class time while she's talking so fast. Her book is new, and she even explained to us that the answers in the back of the book are wrong...????? horrible teacher
Great Calculus proffesor. I got a B without doing one bit of homework. Just go to the SI sessions and study her practice tests and you will do just fine on the tests. Her tests are same as practice tests just different numbers. you can program your calculator with formulas because she never clears the memory. 1 full page of notes allowed on final.
Professor Shrout's lectures are high paced; however, with each new concept all students go to the board to work out problems. If you are struggling she will always stop and help you. S.I. sessions and practice tests (available on her website) are vital for gettting an A in her class. I found this class to be easy to get an A, if you apply yourself.
She does go at a fast pace, but she will keep your interest during the whole class period. I recommend taking her if you have a morning class because she won't put you to sleep. The S.I. sessions are essential, so make sure you keep at least an hour after that class to go to it. Work hard, and stay on top and you'll do fine.
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER... i have taling this class before and failed et... this teacher is awesome. Very helpful, explains things clearly.

She is a great instructor. It is always possible to find her in her office if you have any questions, and she is always willing to help. Just do your homework and study the practice tests and you will do just fine in her class. It is also beneficial if you attend the SI sessions (the extra credit will help).
She was great. Sometimes lectures were waaay too fast paced, but that's just how she is. I love how she sends all of us go to the board. Those times really helped me to understand problems. I recommend going to her site for practice tests before taking a test.
I learned a lot from this class. Its good to be in class everyday to understand material. She provides help during class, and has pre-tests available which are identical to her tests. Extremely understandable. I got an A in her class!
very nice, helpful, easy teacher. make sure to review the pre-test before, it's almost the same as the midterms. Also try to attend the SI it's really helpful(an extra cridet too) you'll just need the book for the homework she handed nots which you study from. the final test was good same as midterms. recommend her. good luck
This class was quite something! She was awfully helpful, although I felt as if every chapter went fast. I need time to sink lessons in before a test. Not surprisingly, I failed most of them simply because math isn't my forte. I do recommend Shrout for those who can learn this subject as fast as she can teach.
hard class but you learn alot. Do the work and the practice test and you should be ok.
she is a great teacher, i took college algebra and going to take calculus with her....great teacher.
Fast and keeps you busy on the broads with groups which is cool. Has study guides which helped me get an A-. Exams are like the Study guides!
Shrout is a great teacher. You really learn a lot from her class. I took the summer class, so it went really fast, but she makes it as smooth as possible for you to learn. She has you go to the board during lectures, and that helps A LOT to understand all the material. She's kind of hyper, but you get used to it. Overall, great professor.
she is a tough teacher. everything seems like it's fast paced! you can approach her but honestly, i never wanted to approach her. i pick her as my last resort
This was the hardest class I ever took (at 7am on top of that); boy does she make you work. But if you enjoy the challenge, stay on top of you homework, study for exams with practice tests, and attend SI sessions, you should be fine. Going up to the board is an opportunity for a feedback, not something to be feared.
she is ok, just make sure you do the homework and the practise exams and definitly you will pass. she is hyper though but that just makes the class interesting.
Do your homework. She is a bit fast, but not exactly hard. Makes you go to the board to do problems, and it helps if you don't know what you're doing. She gives practice exams that are basically the exam with different numbers. I jumped to her class after high school Algebra 2 and Finite Math, and got a B. Not bad!
shes really hard, she cares and all, but she grades really picky, makes class go to the board. has practice tests almost exactly the same as the real thing. shes really hyper too and can get on your nerves some times
Worst Teacher Ever. Goes way too fast & skips steps. Worst part is she's INCONSISTENT and does problems differently sometimes; but she expects you to do problems "her" way (whatever that is) and not by the book. Don't bother asking a question either, she'll make you feel dumb or make a big deal out of it (yes she is quite good at that). TERRIBLE
Grades really hard. Expects perfection. Very difficult to pass.
I had her for 141 and 150A with a "A" and "B". Hard material, but helpful during office hours. Funny professor, but slightly excentric
Hard in everything. Specially her grading. ??? Don't take her.
Excellent Teacher. I took her class because I wanted to learn and I did just that. I agree she is a bit fast pace but she does care that the whole class understands. Going to class is essential and you have to do your homework. I will take her for every class I can.
I was very afraid to take Cal coming out from high school, however Professor Shrout is a very unique person in teaching. I learned alot from her and her test can be challenging, however is doable in getting an A. Study , ask question, go to SI, our SI leader is a very nice guy. And take every opportunity to do boardwork so show up to class.
Wow, what a great professor. She doesn't care if you come to class or not, you can take the test at any class period that she has, and she types the notes out for you. Don't get me wrong its not an easy class, but she gives you the keys to success. Just study and pay attention. Oh and I really appreciated the board work.
Probably the best math teacher i've had. She teaches then we all go up to the boards and solve problems that we just learned. This helps tremendously. But it is also a difficult class. If you like a lil challenge and you actually want to learn, then take this class! If your not interested in retaining what you learned and just want an A, then don't
She's horrible!!! I love math and she did not teach anything!!! All she did was put stuff on the over-head and then read it off!!! If you like to teach yourself then go for it, but Calculus is hard and she's not helpful at all!!! She complains about how she had laringitous (however you spell it) and now she doesn't let sick kids in the class!!!
I love Prof. Shrout, she is really something as a teacher. She is a teacher who is very devoted to her job, heck she even taught our class during earthquake drill. Her class can be hard, it needs commitment. She's blunt, she tells you what she wants on her test, so you know what to study for. STUDY
great professors, she really knows her stuff, goes a bit fast but if you have a question, shell do everything she can to help. after notes you go to the board to parctice what you just learned which is very helpful. just do ur hw and do the practice tests she gives like 5 times, and youre good.
She is the best teacher I ever had. She is very active in class. We only turn in the homework before each test. You can print out practice exam for the test. She is devoted to her students. She makes you go to the board to practice important questions. Don't wait till the last minutes to do your homework. It will show on the test.
omggg....greatest math teacher ever! i know she goes a little fast and kinda tough, but she will make sure you learn the material, not an easy A so if ur looking for a chill w.e teacher just to pass the clas, dont take here, but she has amazing teaching methods i.e. going to the board. if i could id take her for all my math classes.
Good teacher. Must study outside of class to keep up. Homework is mandatory, so textbook is too. Explains things clearly and her mandatory class participation helps a lot. She does move along quickly but gives handouts of her notes so you can write notes and still follow along. Overall a good class to take if you want to learn.
If you want to be FAILED, you then should take this horrible one. Don't walk but RUN AWAY from her. One of the most difficult, the worst teacher i have ever had. We started out with about 40 in the class;now it's down to 9. YOU WILL REGRET if you take her. TAKE Professor GODSHALK
MEAN and ARROGANT WOMAN. run if you still can!! Math isn't for everyone, but everyone has to take it, that's reality. What isn't realistic is expecting a human being to morph into a math superstar just to satisfy this woman's ego. If you understand math, no problem. However, if you struggle at all, forget Shrout!
Pr. Shrout is very hard because she is very picky on things. She wants things her way or no way. She knows her math, but attending the class is not that helpful other than going on the board. She does not give out participation grade and is a picky grader. Very hard. Gives out a lot of homework which is only 5 points extra on your test.
Professor Shrout was actually a very good teacher despite what others say. she is kind of hard but as long as you do the homework and the practice tests you should be fine! her practice tests are almost exactly like the real tests. plus she drops one test. if you can go to SI then that would most likely help you a lot. she gives extra credit too!
She was the most difficult person I've dealt with. It's either her way or the highway. If you don't understand the material the first time she explains it, she tells her students to take SI or tutoring. I have to say, worst teacher I've had.
she is the worst teacher in cypress college.she gives alot of homework questions which are not related to the class topic.in exams she wants the answer in her own way , even if your answer is right she can give you zero point for that.she asks her student to work on the blackboard and waste the time so she doesn't give her lectures.
I dont know why this teacher is in the college. She is strict and shes doesn't like students who are good in maths.she wants one genius in the class which she think she is.If you want to fail this class take her.:)
I think she is a great teacher! Very challenging, but Calc is a class where you have to be on top of your game. Going to the board to practice problems is one of the best techniques I have ever seen a prof do, it helps so much! Handouts not always clear, which is why going to the board helps, class is not mandatory, but you'll only hurt yourself.
Does not teach. Puts stuff on the over head and reads it, but takes it away before you can copy it. Doesn't enjoy teaching, just like the morale boost it gives her. She thinks she's all that, but really she's just difficult. :-/ NOT Recommended
She knows what she's talking about. Her tests are easy to pass, since she gives study guides. Goes through the material fast, but that's how all college classes are, this isn't highschool anymore. Doesn't explain things quit the best if your not firm in your math foundation. If your a good student, or good at math, you'll get a good grade.
love love loved this class!
People who says negative things about her below are wrong. She's very nice and helpful, if she goes a bit fast, you can ask her to slow down. Going to the board will help you remember A LOT when you do it by yourself. The tests have the exactly same structure as the practice test on her website! Take her and you'll find out!
She is very strict and hard to understand.I took this class in fall, when the class started there were 30 students but on the final day there were only 5 students left because nobody gets her.She does not know math, she will give you zero if you dont use her methods.
Disregard the numerical scoring. As long as you REALLY do the homework and you have a genuine thirst for learning, you will be fine. She has a passion for what she teaches. One thing that I believe is NOT optional is S.I. Do not compromise SI. Go to as many sessions and you'll not only get that A but E.C. to help you get that A (just in case).
The person 2 comments below exaggerates like mad. There was not 5 people on the last day of the final. The classes and you are allowed to sign up for when you want to take the final exam. It probably was one of the more unpopular days to take the test (since most people want to take it as late as possible). Great teacher.
I'm currently taking her.. And iabosolutely love her! She might go fast at times but she will slow down for you and very thorough and hands on.. Board activities are great! She's goofy and funny and really knows her stuff and teaches it well, and math is my worst subject.. A bit of a stickler about being on time but isee no problem in that. Greta t
she doesn't want students who are good in math. If she asks you what is 1+1 , just say i dont know , you will be fine and she will like it. but if you said 2 , you will be in big trouble. This teacher doesnt know math actually.
Overall, the teacher's grading and tests are easy. She posts practice tests online and the test is basically the exact thing. Only thin, she may teach a bit fast and is a little strict. Usually she's nice at helping, but at times she can be insulting & impatient. Take her if you at least know a little bit of pre-calc and you'll be fine.
she is awesome :)
she's awesome, but over excited sometimes, dont take this class if ur emotionally weak or have no basic math skills
I was very pleased with her because she is enthusiastic, clear, allows students to work out problems in class and help each other out, which I believe was very effective! She also had practice tests available that if you take advantage of, you're sure to get an A! If I had to take calc, I would take her. :)
If you have performance anxiety, this class is NOT for you. You will get a 3-5 minute explanation of how to do a problem then be expected to do it on the board with the teacher watching. She also uses an online system for doing homework, but if you use the methods taught online on a test, you are marked incorrect.
shes great, gives out lots of homework but shes really clear n helpful.
She is really enthusiastic, which helps in math classes because most people tend to not like math. She does not grade easy nor is she lenient. DO NOT MISS CLASS. You get what you put into this class. I worked really hard for my A. Take her if you want a real college professor (:
She is tough in terms of attendance. If you are a late person, be aware of her moodiness. All practice tests are available at the library and the real ones are 99% similar. Do all homework to get partial credits for the chapter tests. Lectures are really fast, so you should go to SI sessions afterwards. Take her and you wont regret.
She's a good teacher. She makes everyone go to the board to do the problems, which is really helpful. Her tests are pretty easy. There the same or almost the same as the practice tests. Oh, it seems that she doesn't check the homework seriously. She'll just mark them done even if you do most or some of them. ^_^! Not a bad choice.SI helps.Good luck
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! DO NOT TAKE >:O
I had to take this class because I had no choice.Yes, she's strict about attendance.1 tardy=1 absence. There's 8 questions on tests. So if you miss one question, you won't get an A on the test.
Even though she is strict, I still got an A in her class.
I would not recommend this teacher! We left 30-40 minutes early every day, which left many of us students lost or confused. It would be one thing if she went fast and taught all the way till the end of class, but we left early on a daily basis, so I don't respect her for that.
She is strict, but very well organized and helpfull
I'm currently taking her online class and she's the best math teacher I've ever had. I'd take her for any course. She's not easy, but she's EXTREMELY thorough and clear. If you can't do her 141 material, you'll probably fail calculus. We need more real professors like her. A+.
She's a very nice and helpful teacher. To pass her class, you have to study and do homework regularly. I studied this class online and got A!!!!
Even though I got a C....It was my fault...couldn't keep up with schedule...BUT awesome awesome teacher...very helpful and passionate about math!lol Fun class even though online I learned alot! Thanks Prof!A++
She is an excellent Teacher. Super clear and helpful.
She is extremely dedicated to her students. Currently taking her online class, she went to hospital for a week and still answered all of our questions and emailed us. She is very nice and helpful and has a good heart. I recomend her!
She is always interested in helping her students succeed. I think this is the first A I got in a math class, and it's partially because of her.
the schedule is difficult to tkeep up with. And her tests are hard
I took her online class and you really have to keep up with the schedule. Be ahead! Her lecture videos are very thorough but the homework and quizzes are very time consuming. Prepare for the tests using her study guides at the end of each chapter. Replied to emails very quickly. I do recommend her even if you hate math :)
Great teacher, great teaching methods..... do all the hw get the quizzes done early and get easy A's on her tests. She will show you the tricks of the trade.
I'm not going to lie it was pretty hard for me. As long as you stay ahead on the homework and study as much as possible before the exams it's not so bad. I wish she would go step by step on some of her problems though. Sometimes she skips a few and it gets confusing. She also encourages to come to her office hours for help.
I had a very difficult time with this class. I spent about 3 hours every day working on homework and quizzes online. I can honestly say I tried very hard but I could never get higher than a D on any test. So i had to drop it halfway through the semester. Try not to take the class online if possible.
I took her class online and her videos are very thorough, she has great examples. But her videos can get very annoying because she does these stupid annoying voices sometimes and it's really irritating. But other than that, if you keep up with the schedule and do extra credit, you should be able to pass the class.
The online class is pretty much self-teach. The videos at times aren't very clear and sometimes she skips steps which makes it very confusing. Here's the bottom line, if math isn't your strong suit then avoid this class like the plague. Class is pretty difficult unless you're the type of person who excels at math and can teach yourself.
Gotta say she is very strict. If you are working hard, doing all the homework and quizzes, and solving all problems each chapter review, you will be fine. I thought it would save more my time if i take online class; otherwise, not really lol.. I can still get an A in her class, though, but mostly i'm self-teach person.
I took her online class because her regular class was full. She is a very great teacher, her videos are really good same as if you were in class. Her exams are just like the reviews at the end of each chapter.
If you want to learn something I highly suggest this professor.
The MyMathLab online class was clear cut. You watch the video, follow with the note packet, do the (anywhere from 12-20) question HW, then take the 4 question quiz. Rinse. Repeat. Pros-you can power through all of the assignments online, do the tests early and have weeks to rest (if you're that dedicated) Cons- tests are heavily weighted on grade.
Online math sucks but I had to take it since I want to transfer as quick as possible. Attend her Virtual Office Hours if you're doing it online. IT HELPS! This is a class you have to really study for and homework is due on the specified nights (pretty much every day) before 9 pm so it's a good idea to stay ahead of schedule. Good luck...
She is one of the math teacher I had. I really rocommend on taking her class. She gives a lot of opportunity to earn extra credit that goes towards your test. Basically you have homework everyday since you do one section per day. Just do your homework IN TIME and DO THE STUDY GUIDE!!!!!!
Super easy! Videos were clear and the reviews are a perfect example of the test Qs. Copying notes are free & easy points. Lots of opportunities to get high HW & quiz grades. Offers as much help as you need, even though you prob won't need any. I ended up with over 100% in the class. And this is coming from someone who normally hates algebra.
Don't get me wrong shes a great professor. But she tries to make an online class like a classroom. I took an online course so it wont be like a classroom. She emails all the time and requires so much stuff in a particular order... Which i tried to avoid in the first place. Hw everyday if you don't stay ahead. Which sucks because I'm so busy.
This was my 2nd time taking math 141 like many other people (precalc is HARD). But I found that prof Shrout had a teaching style that clicked with me. I watched videos and did homework daily on MML which was tedious but VERY beneficial. I got a D last time, and earned an A this time. Youtube vid for lecture+hw+quiz took me about 2-3 hours everyday.
Professor Shrout was a great teacher, her lecture notes were awesome. But you do have a lot of homework, and the test were hard because it's a handwritten test not multiple choice. So if you are looking for an easy grade, this class is not for you.
Math40 is easy shet made it extremely hard. Its an online class and she requires you to print out all the lecture notes waste of paper n fill them in by watching her lecture videos n then do her review problems on top of the hw. The hw is via mathlab but she wants different notation so its double work. She thinks that shes funny but shes not. AWFUL
I regret taking the course online. The videos did not always cover what was on the homework. There was a lot of homework and you must get and 80% or higher on the homework in order to do the quizzes. If you don't understand it, go find help somewhere else or by contacting her. A lot of different topics are covered. 80% of grade is all on the exams.
I made the mistake of taking the online class during summer which was aggravating. The lectures are too long and mandatory. She teaches things in a way that does not work for me, though clearly it does for some. If you understand enough to pass the quizzes/reviews you will pass the exams. MyMathLab assistance helped a ton. MyMathLab is required.
I took this class over the summer and it was the worst decision ever. I did all the work for the quizzes and the packets, but I still passed with a C. I am usually an A student and this messed up my GPA. Never taking this teacher again. She gives extra credit, but it doesn't really help.
I am awful at math and took this course with a leap of faith. She requires mymathlab, it really helped me when some of her lecture videos were a little too fast for me to pick up. I passed my tests with grades I'd never gotten in my life, so she must be doing SOMETHING right! You fill in lecture notes, do hw and quizzes online, exams are on campus.
Wish she taught other math classes online! Super easy and she's great at giving feedback on problems you don't understand/solve. Lecture notes are videos that you watch and fill in. Homework and quizzes are all on mymathlab. Do the notes well or else you don't get partial credit on your tests!! And gives extra credit points easily every test.
shrout has her own unique methods with solving problems and it's her method or it's wrong. she writes so messy in the online videos it's quite horrifying and she rushes through everything . the only videos she wrote nicely in were in the conic sections and all those videos are over 20 tedious minutes long. does not know how to be succinct .
Took her online class for spring 2017. Everything is online except for the test. hw almost every day about 8-16 quest, quiz for every section 4 questions only. EC offer to every test. lectures can be rewind/fast forward they are previously recorded. notes is a must, you will turn them in. only 2 DLAs required. has a lot of office hrs even online!
Cares about you succeeding, but has a weird way of showing it. Took her class online and her video notes were really rushed and sometimes not legible. I felt stupid for ever asking questions because she expected us to know everything.
For each section online video notes where you copy her notes, online homework, online quiz (not timed, 2 attempts, 4 questions). In class tests, if you do review packet you'll be fine. It is a big time commitment this class. GET UNIT PACKETS PRINTED BEFOREHAND AT FEDEX OR STAPLES they are large and will kill your at home printer will be like $4.00.
If you have got limited time because of work and other classes. Beware. There is always an assignment due each day with a lecture attached to it for you to complete each day. So you will probably spend 2-3 hours every day for something in this class. She picks problems that require you to memorize each rule for each type of equation. Just WOW.
Overall a real pain to survive her class, she give a crap ton of hw and if you take her online class, you'll have to spend weekends just to get caught up on lecture videos plus the Hw. Its as she thinks that her class is the only one her students are taking, and she disregards the fact that her students need to do other hw from other classes.
Very hard class to pass! You will be overloaded with long lecture videos that are not easy to understand if you dont like math. Heavy HW both written and online and to top it of you must complete a set of quizzes each week. Its tough to keep up with other classes while taking her class.
Terrible online teacher. You have a quiz/test every week. She doesn't teach, just has videos uploaded that you need to watch and take notes on. The videos don't cover what's on the homework half the time. OVERWHELMING amounts of homework, like 8-12 assignments per week. She likes to teach the wrong way for 5 mins then say WRONG, NO like it's funny.
Miss thing really thinks she's doing us a favor by rushing over all her lessons and making us feel stupid. She gives enough homework that by the end of the semester you're most likely to have math PTSD. She speaks too fast and expects you to know everything. Even asking her for help can be degrading. Remember this review when you're about to fail.
Get ready for tests. Each is 300 points and the final is 500. Skip class? You wont pass. So the HW. Its an easy 4 points and covers the lesson you do for the day. You usually have hw everyday except Sundays but there are a few exceptions. You should also start to get ahead and stay ahead so you can ask any questions before exams. Good luck!
Professor Shrout is fantastic! She will prepare you for calculus extremely well, offers thorough feedback, and many resources for help. There homework almost every day, so keep up or get ahead. I hadn't taken a math class since 2017, and would have failed if she wasn't such a wonderful professor.
Her class was hard and I unfortunately had to drop it since my math skills were a little rusty. However, I would say that in the time I was in her class I did learn a lot and although she gives out a lot of homework she does it with the intention of getting you ready for future math courses. She is really nice and would massively help you!
You receive a heavy amount of homework and it moves very quickly. You're expected to learn a new concept almost every day. Homework almost every day as well; Exams around every 2 weeks. If you're actively asking questions and work well through self-study, you'll be fine. Tutoring is offered but I still really had to push myself.
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.
