He's a great Teacher and explain chemistry to a level that is easy to understand
Very good teacher but a fairly hard class. If you want a really easy chemistry class i would suggest Kurshner at the RVS campus.
Really helpful and is able to get ANYONE through chemistry.
Good teacher, but has some low points. Gives easy tests, but is sometimes deliberately confusing about their contents. Is sometimes dismissive of questions, and sometimes just railroads through topics that are hard to explain. Overall though, makes chemistry interesting & humorous & is fairly easy.
He is a great instructor! He cares about students and explains everything very well. Besides, he makes jokes all the time. He has an accent, but everybody can understand him. He is a head of Chemistry department. I would reccomend everybody to take his class if you really want to learn Chemistry.
Worst teacher I've ever had, he made the class call him "Big Papa"
I thought I had a mild understanding of chemistry until I took this class. His tests are impossible and his lecture is even worse. Every student I talked to in my class had difficulty making it through. He had to grade on a curve, or more than 1/2 the class would fail.
made everyone call him "big papa" and taught way too fast -- come on this is organic chem I -- you got to have a grasp on things -- you can never get a grasp with him teaching! I took the class in a different semester and got a B, I was failing with him and I wasn't able to bring any knowledge from his class to next. DO NOT TAKE HIM -- take Mohan

HORRIBLE! He can't speak English and his tests are ridiculous. This is quite possibly the worst instructor I've ever had. He calls everyone "Mama" or "Papa" and addresses himself as "Big Papa" plus he thinks he's a comedian telling you that you're going to take him to 6th street and buy him a beer because you don't understand...
Not helpful at all. I had in average of 30 in his class. He nerver helped anyone in his call. I don't recommend him to anyone. Save your money and get another teacher but this one.
He prides himself on being intelligent (I think it's teaching at UT that makes him a snob) and, despite the fact that it's true, when his students don't understand he blames it on their laziness/stupidity rather than his lack of clarity in his lectures. Decent prof, just don't miss a class or he'll discriminate against you. Easy labs
this was the most unorganized class i have ever attended. the sylabus was at least five years old and had nothing to do with the class. he lectured five chapters ahead of what ever was going. meaning we were taking the ch 3 test he would be lecturing on ch 8. avoid at all costs.
Worst teacher I have had. I've had bad teachers before, but NO ONE could pass his test except a very small number. Would tell you to study one thing, then throw other things on the test not related to what you studied. Promoted thinking outside the box, without fully showing you the box.
Professor Uzomba have a heavy accient that sometime its hard to understand. He do not explain things well and so his test. Actually, his test isn't even his. His class work seem easy but the test is nothing like what we do in class. I do not recommend!
He means good, but he seems too full of pride. His homework was a bit of an overload. His tests were wrong as well--we spent an entire class period once, the whole class outraged and yelling, to get him to omit 5+ wrong problems. He has a very heavy african accent, so it's hard to understand his lectures. I do not recommend.
DO NOT RECOMEND!! cannot understand, extremely hard. My class went from like 25 people to 8!
As long as you read the chapters and do the exercises, you will be fine in this class. I think many low ratings are due to students not making an attempt to do well. However, his classes are more difficult than other Intro to Chem classes.
does't teach well.
Uzomba's intro to chem class does need some effort put forth, but if you take good notes and review them there is absolutely nothing to worry about, he does have an accent but he repeats things if you ask him too..GREAT teacher in my opinion! Hard work pays off!
even though teacher is good at explaining things, he requires that you study the material ahead of time and will poke fun of your for not studying. on many of chemistry's hardest subjects, he uses rules to break it down and make it alot easier to understand, especially with the math part. he is always there to help before and after class
He's actually a great teacher, despite all these complaints. He jokes around a lot, but it's so people can ease up to him and ask questions when they feel they need. He was always available in office hours, especially if you didnt understand him in class; he'll explain and help you. It's chemistry, it's gonna be a little tough. Study hard, easy A!
He told us that he was done teaching with 4 weeks left in the semester and one hard test to take, some people had to resort to memorizing the test. He does give you a review to study from but work the review because he gave us a review that was FULL of errors.
He is a good teacher. He is very hard, but he is willing to help. Some of his tests come straight from his reviews. He is really a nice instructor, and has a sense of humor. I like him alot!!
I am in his class right now and he is a little intimidating at first but is really a softy and does crack jokes. I didnt have a problem understanding him. His tests are exact replicas of the reviews that he gives weeks in advance. He doesnt require HW at all. If you take him with the Lab instructor Alvanipour, then you will surely get a good grade
At first i wasn't sure if i was going to like him, he was hard to understand. But after being in his class i found out he is really nice and will make you laugh a lot. His accent was easier to understand after being in there a few days. His test are exactly the same as the study guide and he never assigns hwk. I enjoyed being in his class :]
He is really funny tells a lot of jokes, and really loves chemistry. Test are IDENTICAL to the review, study them and you will get an A. He is also really helpful when you go to his office hours. If you want to get a good grade in Chemistry take him!
He is hands down the worst teacher I have had in my entire life. Instead of explaining anything about chemistry, he would just give a list of rules for solving equations. He liked to be called "Big Papa." Gross. I dropped his class and am taking it with a much better prof this time who actually explains chemistry and makes it interesting.
I LOVE DR. UZOMBA! He cracks a lot of jokes, very helpful if you go to his office hours. His reviews are exactly like the test. Study them and you will get an A. Highly recommended especially if you want an A.
He was a really fun teacher. intimidating at first, but after a while he warms up. he cracks lots of cheesy jokes, but its fun. he will always help you if you ask a question and the test is literally handed out to you when he gives you the review. the review has about 50-100 questions, and the test will use about 50 of those exact same questions.
He is a great professor if you are just trying to make it through the class as a requirement. If you actually want to go far in chemistry i wouldn't recommend. He skims topics and isn't very detailed. He is an awesome guy though, he makes jokes and makes class interesting he just isn't the best at keeping you informed. His review IS THE TEST and th
he makes you want to learn. and that is the most important thing. yes, his test mirrored the reviews, but i refused to simply memorize them. he made me WANT to learn
Very nice man. Skims over main topics quickly. Study the review - know it and you've got an A. Just laugh at the jokes and go to class.
Dr. Uzomba knows chem. very well, regardless if you like him or not. However, what he doesn't realize, is that he doesn't speak good english and that it's VERY hard to understand what he says. His handwriting isn't any better. He doesn't go over the information you learn in class very well either. He goes over it once or twice and that's it.
His class was relatively easy. I toke it over the summer and he would give you "test reviews" before each test which were basically the exact test. I literally had people in my class who would just memorize the test review answers and get an A.The book is super helpful but you dont use it. Dont take if you havent taken chemistry in a while.
Ok so not the easiest to understand sometimes, but he's aware and is fine w/ repeating. He cares that you learn even though his tests are identical to review handouts. He gives 3 extra points to avg if perfect attendance. Hard to reach him outside of class, but doesn't mind helping when you can find him. One of my favorite prof at ACC.
I had him for organic one. Honestly, I didn't learn and study in his class. He gave us review packages and the tests were the same. We had a presentation at the end of the class as well. If you don't care about your chem knowledge and just care about A, take him. If not, don't!!! Oh by the way he wants you to attend each single class.
He is a good teacher, if you just want to make an A. But if you want to learn about chemistry, don't take him. He knows he doesn't speak well, so if you don't understand what he says, ASK him to say it again. Also just do the review if you want to do well on the tests. they are EXACTLY like the review. No joke!
He definitely knows chemistry. He's entertaining and is usually trying to be funny with his dry humor. I enjoyed the class, but don't expect to learn a whole lot from him directly. You'll find that you're mostly teaching yourself (along with help from the learning lab). Beware if you're planning on taking Chem 2.
He has an accent, however I had no problem understanding him. This class is an easy A, because as others have said his tests are the review minus about 50-20 questions. In his chem class you mainly work with numbers not concepts.
I liked his teaching style, he explains concepts, solves problems and is always willing to answers questions. Yes his humor is a little dry but give this guy a break! He is a good teacher and that matters a lot. The exams are easy as he gives the study guide, I would highly recommend him.
I didn't learn and study in his class. he has a very big accent, its very hard to understand him. He's entertaining and is usually trying to be funny with his dry humor.I don't expect to learn a whole lot from him directly. You'll find that you're mostly teaching yourself.hard grader. if your planning on taking chem. 2 dont take uzomba
I liked him as a person, but I taught myself most of the material with the help pf the learning lab and google. His tests come straight from the reviews, so it is possible to make an A without learning anything, but if you need Chem II you might want to take this class from another Prof.
If you want to learn and understand chemistry; DO NOT take this class. If you want an A by memorizing his review (which is identical to the test) then take him. However, he is not helpful at all. If you make it to all of his lectures; he will give you 3 extra points for the overall grade.
I like him as a person but class was very confusing because he did not follow the book in order and there wasn't a clear syllabus. He never uses the textbook in class. His test reviews are helpful, but not easy. I had to teach myself most of the material and I spent a ton of time in the learning lab.
There is no doubt that he knows his Chemistry very well. He doesn't stress how much you need to study along with the book as you take this freshman level course - the reviews back this notion up. If you rely on these reviews to get you by then you will not do well as a Junior. You must learn this super basic stuff and he is willing to help.
This professor knowns his stuff, but cannot teach. He skipes chapter in the book and teaches the hardes subjects first without any bases. I spent hours learning on my own.
If you pay attention in class and take extensive notes, you will pass this class with ease. He is a very good teacher that knowns his stuff. I did not use my book to follow the class but used my notes as a base and looked up for information when needed. Great teacher, will try to get him for all my chem classes.
DO NOT TAKE. It says something when the class average on a major exam is a 40% and the prof thinks it is funny. It is not unusual for him to make someone cry.VERY thick accent -- hard to understand. Ridicules students openly.
I would definitely not recommend taking his class. He knows his stuff, but is not good at teaching it. You feel intimidated to ask question because he will make you feel stupid. You don't get homework grades, so it all depends on your test scores. He is a nice person, and can be funny, but not a good teacher.
He really isnt that hard of a teacher, ive had 2 of his classes and everyone who says its difficult just gets lost because of his accent. Most of the time stupid students keep disrupting the class saying What what what a million times.Honestly if you take him be prepared to have annoying classmates who nag about everything. The class isnt hard
He is a great teacher, always willing to help, In office early and willing to go through step by step to explain. MUST show up for class. Gives great notes always explains work goes over everything on test. Class size is approx. 30 only 15 show up for class. Has an accent but once your in class a while you understand him. MUST ATTEND CLASS.
I actually enjoyed taking chemistry this time and found that I did much better than I did with my last professor. He is very good at explaining things. I am taking his class again in the fall for Chem 2
his sense of humor is crazy. He is absolutely good professor, but his grading system is not clear to me.
He's a nice teacher, but annoying, lazy students can make the class seem harder than it really is. I would recommend going to the learning lab, studying his reviews and going to class EVERY DAY! He doesnt follow the book but has his own ways of teaching certain materials that make it easier to understand certain concepts.
If you are an auditory learner, you will be ok (as long as you can get over his accent). If you are a kinesthetic or visual learner, DO NOT TAKE HIM. There is not enough structure! I had to spend a lot of time in the learning lab to come out with a C :( I should've been youtubing the material instead reading the book.
Be prepared to live in the learning lab for this class. Class is fairly easy to pass if you do his review packets and study them since he uses the SAME questions on the test. If you want to actually learn something, I don't recommend him. If you don't need any more chemistry in the future then he's a fairly moderate A.
Nice man and and knowledgeable there's no argument there. But if you actually want to learn chemistry, do not choose him. The class is tolerable if you spend an hour or so in the Learning Lab after every lecture and go through the exam guides.
His class is easy IF you know the material already I missed an exam and yet ended up with a B though IF you DONT know the material I do not recommend him since he is not good at explaining. And his study guide/quiz is exactly like the test so thats a plus.
His accent is hard to get over. He doesn't explain anything clearly. You will live in the learning lab getting help from tutors. I passed with an A but only because I love chem. His exam guides are literally the test- but you will not learn anything from them. Don't take if you actually wanna learn. I regret taking this guy.
oh my gosh terrible! avoid him if you can you have to go to learning lab and teach it to yourself it's frustrating when you are working so hard yet you don't know what's going on in the class I'd go with a different teacher oh and tests are NOT easy if that's what you are looking for
I liked Uzomba. This is not an easy course because of the material but I thought he broke things down well so that I could understand. I did have to go to the learning lab for some extra help but I feel it was because we only had so much time in class and I never felt that my time was being wasted. His accent never bothered me.
He is a really great professor who knows his stuff and is able to make difficult concepts easy. I took AP chem in HS and lots of concepts were lost on me, but he taught them with better methods. I would recommend him, but it seems like many of his other students in my class aren't able to grasp these concepts. very well.
He's pleasant enough, but get ready to teach yourself concepts that aren't covered well in lecture and nonexistent in your book for the tests. On the plus side, the reviews are fairly comprehensive and are made up of questions that will be on the test, likely unchanged. Brush up on your algebra. I learned how to do stoichiometry, but not much else.
Professor Uzomba is, hands down, the worst teacher I have ever had for several reasons. He is consistently late to class, he blatantly insults students when they ask a question he deems 'stupid', he consistently tests on material that is from material not covered in the text book or lecture, and never shows up for his office hours. AVOID!
Pros: tests aren't the hardest and perfect attendance have you extra pts, his office hrs are helpful but Cons: his reviews have some incorrect answers included and be doesn't warn you which ones those are. Accent made lectures hard to understand. Not always in his office hrs. I got an A but I worked hardfor it.
Dr. Uzomba lectures in a way that doesn't necessarily go along with the book, but can be helpful in understanding. Honestly, his class was kind of a review for me since I took chemistry in high school. He weaves concepts that make sense together into the stream of his lectures, but if you choose to use the book, it jumps chapters. Nice guy overall.
AP Chem teacher made me hate chem. I couldn't get it. Uzomba was like the godsend chem teacher I was waiting for. The guy knows his stuff and how to teach it with a dash of humor, you just gotta take good notes 'n pay attention. If you do the test review (which has answers) and study it hardcore, and get it, you know how you'll do on the test.
His accent is hard to understand, but that aside he's not very clear with what he wants. When over half the class doesn't bring in the right assignment because of the way he explained it, there's a problem. He also enjoys making students feel stupid and will call on you just to laugh. Would not take again.
Have an accent but he is really great professor. Go to office hours and just stay on top of things really great teacher and very knowledgeable
He is happy and upbeat, but, for me, he moved too fast to understand anything and seemed to purposefully ask us to solve problems in class that we did not yet have the knowledge / tools to solve. He seemed to care very little for our ability to understand the material. If it hadn't been for the learning labs, I doubt I would have passed.
Haven't had chem in 15 yrs. I worked my a** off in this class & spent at least 12-15 hrs a week in learning labs getting help w/reviews. He gives 3 points to your final score for not missing any classes (and he takes role). If you can do the reviews (expect numbers to change) then you can get an A. Took effort but tests are just like reviews.
Took Uzomba for intro to chem. He holds two Chemistry PhDs and DOES NOT know how to teach down. He taught like we all knew what he was talking about. No homework but for an introductory class the prof should use something to know where students are with the concepts. The tests were the same as the reviews so everyone passed by memorizing answers.
This professor is remarkably good. I don't understand what these students are saying. If they did poorly its because wanted to ! If you go to lecture and do the reviews you are sure to get the concepts and an A. He has a passion for chemistry and very good teaching skills. I'm taking ochem II now and Dr Uzomba gave me a solid foundation.
Great professor !! If you want to have fun while learning chem, take him. If you are willing to go to class and keep up with the material take him !! He makes hard concepts easy.
Professor Uzomba is funny, but not the best teacher. Love him but not as a professor. He teaches as if we already get the concepts. Accent sometimes hard to understand. To sum up this class, everything on our tests- I taught MYSELF, OUTSIDE of class. Using his study guides, I learned the material via youtube, google, class notes, & book.
Great Prof.
Uzomba was a little hard to understand at times with his accent. but he's very funny, super nice, and made class entertaining. Subject matter was hard and he wasn't the BEST at explaining, but he makes the tests based on the study guides, so as long as you DO THEM front to back, you will do well on the exams. he'll help you when you need it.
This teacher is downright demeaning. He lectures in a yelling voice, encourages you to ask questions but gets mad when things get slowed down and no one understands what hes talking about. Concepts that he made so difficult were explained perfectly on YouTube. Hes a terrible explainer, sadly. Hes too advanced to teach down. Waste of my time.
Wonderful teacher if you don't have trouble understanding accents.
Great sense of humor and personality, but not so great teacher. Tests were multiple choice, so no extra credit. His accent wasn't the issue at all- it was the way he explained the concepts. I dropped and I am doing better with another professor. His teaching style just didn't jive with me. Exams make up entire grade- no extra credit, homework, etc.
Very intense Chem class, with grade only determined by tests & final. My average for each test taken was almost 3 hours!!! DO NOT MISS CLASS or you will be lost. Uzomba goes very fast, but has great insight/shortcuts. I only say that I would take this professor again because he is a hilarious character & very smart professor
Uzomba is a fantastic Professor. Pretty much a crazy Genius. Focus and take all the notes you can. Real Step Up would be getting him a bottle of Brandy on the first/Last Day of Class. He wants to Help you if you let him.
Isnt always the best at communicating. I took him for lab and found myself and others often confused. However he is a kind teacher and was willing to curve grades if he saw the whole class struggling with a subject. Wasnt very clear on the grading criteria to the point nobody knew if we had a lab final until the lab before. (We didnt)
In class, he was clear for the most part and always encouraged questions, but when myself or someone around me asked a question he would make us feel uneducated and that we didn't belong in his class if we didn't understand that concept immediately. I will say though that if you put in the work and STUDY you will pass.
Strong accent makes it difficult to understand at some concepts. However main issue was that if you don't already know the subject you will not pass as he already expects you to know it.
Dr. Uzomba is the best Chemistry teacher at ACC at the moment. His tests are multiple choice and easy to get an A. His class is the best class i have ever taken and i am not sure i will ever come across any nice, smart and caring professor like Dr. Uzomba. On a scale of 10 i rate him 10
Not easy to communicate with, but he does his best... your grade will rely on your test scores so STUDY the review he gives you very well and you'll pass no problem--but they can be very time consuming as the reviews can range from 50 to 120 questions long. Do not miss class or you will be lost! He gives you bonus points for perfect attendance.
This class is an Easy A as the tests come straight from the review, but be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING if you actually want to learn. The professor is very unorganized and has no plan for each lecture.
Pretty standard and easy lab class. It was difficult to understand him over computer audio. Overall, pretty easy and straightforward professor you cannot go wrong with.
Great prof, definitely wants to make Chemistry fun. Make sure to do the reviews and GO TO CLASS.
I took a Saturday Chem Lab section with him. The whole time he was there he lectured 15 minutes (sometimes less) and then was off. Sometimes he showed examples sometimes he didn't. The class was very disorganized and the lab manual really needed reformatting. He blatantly ignored my email for an office hour when I needed help. AWFUL!
FALL 2020 (LAB): Very disorganized. No syllabus or rubric. Hard to reach out to professor for help. Documents to fill out the lab assignments required reformatting. Often confusing which documents or sample data to use. If you get it set up and figure out what to do, it's not hard. The lab is 100% weekly assignments that are mainly calculations.
FALL 2020 (LECTURE): Very disorganized. No due dates or instructions on syllabus, announcements, etc. (only said in class). Hard to reach out to professor. Extra credit for attendance, but no need to attend. Lectures aren't very helpful and are difficult to understand. Heavy accent. Tests very closely resemble reviews (answers included) --> easy A.
A great professor to take if you enjoy disorganization, unexplained shortcuts, lack of direction, poor communication, an out of date syllabus, and absolutely zero explanation of any theories discussed. I have two degrees and in all my years of school, this is the worst professor I have ever taken a class with. Avoid at all costs.
Hes very hard to follow and teaches in a way where you are expected to already know certain things.
Worst lecture prof ever. Heavy accent, terrible writing, no powerpoint notes. He wastes 30 min at the start of class to actually start teaching. Gives two examples and expects you to understand 5 variations of the problem. Review has many questions never covered in class which of course are on the test. AVOID!!!
Called himself "Big Papa" and made everyone uncomfortable. Implied a classmate was stupid. Awful lecturer; asks for questions then doesn't answer them clearly. Literally gives you the answers for the untimed, open-book exams so it's an easy A if you just need the credit, but don't take him if you actually need to learn, because you're on your own.
Dr. Uzomba is not a terrible professor but if you need to take chem 2 and Ochem I would recommend taking it with someone else, but if you need an easy A in chem 1 then take the class with him. his tests are hard because he does not go over all the material but you can google all the answers so it is an easy A. you will not learn much chemistry tho.
Aweful but extremely easy. No syllabus and only handed out a lab schedule which he immediately changed two weeks later and scolded us when we forgot. Took 10 points off because my lab yield was 70% which he considered too low. Doesn't give any feedback and I'm not convinced he even looks at anything other than the last box on the report sheet.
Professor Ozumba is a great teacher who teaches chemistry with love and excitement . The concepts are really described well and simple by him and tests are similar to reviews. I hope that I can take his chemistry class again in the future.
If you need to understand and use chemistry at all, don't take him. He's a cool and funny guy, lectures are just very boring and he does have a thick accent so he can be hard to understand at times. Very easy A though, tests are 100% of your grade that is identical to the review. Tests are also online as well. Attend class! He gives extra credit.
Very good Prof. You need to ask to to understand. Labs are easy to understand
Do not take Dr. Uzomba's class if you want to learn anything. He has a thick accent which is hard to understand and he tends to skip a lot of steps and does not explain why and what he is doing. He also takes hand written notes and his handwriting is illegible. This class was a very easy A as the exams are identical to the review and are open note.
Avoid (take Debra Sackett!) Uzomba has a heavy accent. Unacceptable teaching. Unorganized. Handouts are illegible (been photocopied for 20 yrs). Goes over complicated concepts quickly, then shames students with questions. You don't learn chemistry--I attended Dr. Sackett's lectures on the side to make up for Uzomba's lack of teaching. TAKE SACKETT.
Thick accent, terrible lectures, and very heavy on singling out students who don't understand. Occasionally has inappropriate behavior. Has said “come to papa”, and held a female classmate's chin to look up at him. Tests are 100% of the grade and are practically word for word the reviews. If you can deal with his insane behavior, take it for the A.
I agree with what everyone else is saying, heavy accents making the class harder to understand, inappropriate with other students more the female students than male students. Asking really open ended questions and getting mad when you answer it with a "wrong answer" definitely find another teacher and only take this class if you really need to.
