He knows alot about history but thinks his sources are the only correct ones. He does not want to spend time answering students questions and complains alot about American students. He refers to everything as propaganda. He only grades on 4 assignments and openly critiques the students presentations. If you value your GPA--take from another prof
I didn't learn any thing from him. He is the worst teacher i have ever had, I do not recommend him to anyone (unless you understand french)
Great teacher, great class. I learnt so much more than I ever expected to. If you like history, you must take a course from this teacher.
Good teacher. He knows his stuff. I learnt a lot. I always liked history and I now know why. This class requires some work to get interested in and learn something. I enjoyed the class.
Best teacher ever
Finally a teacher that teaches something to remember! It is the first history course I enjoyed.
Interesting class. Teaches history with a twist. Lot of European views and makes interesting arguments. Only asks you to do a few assignments and tests. Pretty easy A but also a fun class.
I am a retired teacher taking this class for the fun of it. I was impressed with the quality of this world history course. Dr. Beurtheret not only brings his expertise, but helps student to learn more efficiently, as well as understand the relevance of history in today's world.
Intimidating at first. By the end of the semester, just the most friendly professor. And I learnt a lot. Most important, he gives good final grades!
he is tight
WARNING!!! Do not take this teacher!!! I have a hearing loss and have asked for his notes. He won't give them! I cannot understand FRENCH! He is French but makes no effort to speak clearly in English! He is incredibly hard to understand, I have had notetakes drop out of class and won't and cannot take notes, because he is too hard to understand!
This professor opened new perspectives on my understanding of the world. I had some challenges this semester, and he went out of his way to make it possible for me to succeed. It was the most interesting class I ever took.
WONDERFUL TEACHER VERY VERY KIND AND HELPFUL VERY PATIENT AND VERY INTELLIGENT
This is absolutely the worst professor I have ever encountered. Im a straight A student, and a history buff, and I am appalled by this professors attitude and teaching methods. I never thought that someone could make history not only boring, but difficult to understand as well. He is rude, degrading to the students, & not at all helpful or pleasant
GREAT TEACHER. MAKES YOU THINK OUTSIDE THE NORMAL REALMS OF HISTORY.
One of the best teachers I ever had. I took all his classes and I would have taken more. I majored in history becaused of him. I love the way he teaches and how he teaches you to write good papers. His pointers had carried me through all my papers in the upper level classes with A in all of them. He teaches you to think outside the box. loved it
Dr. Beurtheret is an amazing professor. His methodology helped me in all of my other classes. He is a very intelligent, interesting, and charming man. He knows a lot about history in general, and his insights on current events are very interesting. He can be a little rude to some students but they usually deserve it. I loved hearing his French accent!
I have never had a worse professor. All of his writings have the worst grammar I have ever seen and then he goes and docs me on my papers for bad grammar even though I have my English Major wife proofread them. He just gave the class a 7 page essay and after we were done he docked us all points since we all allegedly did it on the wrong topic.
Took an online course from him (I honestly thought it was a woman until I found him on this site..) and his course has made me not want to take anymore history classes. He is horrible.
I would not recommend him at all. He is very difficult to understand and gives 10 page papers on ridiculous topics.
Awesome class, great experience! So amazing and helpful. Will require effort and work from his students. Grade and experience is earned every week! Extra credit is an option, great asset for SLCC! Does have a moderate French accent, so, be aware during lectures. Not too difficult to understand though.
Good teacher. He expects dedication from his students, but if you can show him that you are making the effort to succeed, he will help you as much as he can. Also loved his topics, as it was less about names and dates, and more about History's relevance to us as students of history living in the here and now.
Great Teacher, Makes History fun. Challenges class and students. Greta teaching style and techniques. Fun to watch, great to listen too. History 1500, history before 1500 is the class he teaches.
Great class. I have learned a lot and it was interesting.
Great semester. Interesting course, learned as hoped for, new perspectives on history I thought I knew. I recommend this class.
Interesting lectures. A different perspective on history. I will never see the world in the same way.
I kind of liked him as a teacher but the class was really hard, and he's very hard to understand. I am on my last week of the class and I feel I haven't learned anything he's actually pretty funny n' entertaining(not on purpose tho)if your wanting an easy history class do not take his.If your wanting to be challenged and criticized then do take it.
His lectures are great with a unique perspective that I grew to appreciate. Teaching approach and method is more European. Can be unfriendly classroom environment. Hardest part is understanding what is exactly the topic that an essay should be written upon. Most of the class felt frustrated.
French accent, European style encouraging critical thinking rather than regurgitation.. History buffs will love or hate them depending on how closely they stick to textbook version of history. He is a remarkable teacher. Take the class if you have a backbone and genuinely want to learn.
Horrible teacher-- he does not give any instructions and grades your papers extremely harsh. He is unfair in his grading and gives no clarification.
He is a descent teacher. He grades harshly and does not give clear instructions, but gives pretty good lectures. I liked him more than other World History Profs @ SLCC even if he is hard to understand through the thick accent.
He goes off on tangents often and his accent is hard to understand. He doesn't use power points so it makes it harder for visual learners.
Do not take his online history class. The topics and assignments are always extremely unclear and then after grading he writes the entire class an announcement that we have all addressed the wrong topic. Every single time.Shouldn't that tell him something?
Very intelligent man, terrible teacher. Does not allow for interruptions or class discussions. Constantly goes over the allotted class time, keeping students there often 30-45 minutes later than the end of class. Criticizes each student's work in front of the class to a deconstructive level. It is painful to watch his critiques. He loves his voice.
Great professor. His passion for history is contagious. Discussions open new perpectives and understanding. The skills I learned already helped me in other courses. Very interesting lectures, well illustrated with maps and documents. Quite refreshing.
Fantastic class. Goes out of his way to make students successful. Teaches great skills, offers challenging idess that make us think. However success is to be earned each week.
One of the best teachers I ever had. I took all his classes and I would have taken more. I majored in history becaused of him. I love the way he teaches and how he teaches you to write good papers. His pointers had carried me through all my papers in the upper level classes with A in all of them. He teaches you to think outside the box. loved it
Dr. Beurtheret's courses have led me to change my career plans. I will be a history professor. I learned a lot. The lectures are very interesting, discussions stimulations. He has always been available when I needed help or simply encouragements.
Do not leave SLCC without taking his class. Hard, but worth every second.
Prof. Beurtheret is very knowledgeable and quite helpful. He is intimidating at first, but he is a good professor. You will learn a lot, but be ready to read a lot too. The more I studied, the more I enjoyed the class. Challenging tests, but by the end of the semester, I really earned my grade.
I just took the class, Spring 2012. Amazing professor. If you do not read your book, you have no idea what he is talking about. He is passionate about history: I loved his lectures. Although appearing pompous, he is actually quite nice and helpful.
After working so hard, it is hard to admit I did not write the great essay I thought I had. The professor shows you how to make it better though. It is so humbling.
This was my first online course. Dr. Beurtheret provided excellent guidance, and I needed it. It was a lot of work though. What I learnt has helped me to get better grades this semester, and I am quite grateful for the quality of his teaching.
One of my favorite classes! Very interesting lecturer. I learned so much this year in his class. He only grades on 4 things. 2 written exams, a 12 pg paper, and a presentation. Very challenging but this class was worth it! If you like to get A's do an extra presentation. It helps a lot. Take him! He gives you a very different perspective!
The most interesting course i took at slcc. With his methodology, i get better grades in my other classes. It is the fist required course reallly worth taking.
Easy to get a good grade, yet learning quite a bit. Teacher has an accent to get used to, yet he explains well the lesson. Helpful when ask for help.
The online class for this instructor is horrible. Do it in class or take an online class from another professor if possible. The professor doesn’t teach you anything in the online course, but tells you to read certain chapters and write papers on what you read yet to only criticize what you messed up on and mentions nothing on what you did well.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He had horrible grammar and it was hard to understand anything he wrote. Instructions were often unclear. After assignments he sent out announcements pointing out that everyone did everything incorrectly. Talked down to students. Req lots of reading but info on tests was rarely in text. Difficult papers.
The class isn't very hard, especially if you follow directions well. The hardest part is trying to understand what he wants you to write about. On more that one occasion I've gotten "You did not understood the topic". Yes, his English in written form is that bad. Overall a fairly easy class, but the teacher himself is quite confusing.
Professor Beurtheret is one of the most misunderstood professors whose class I've had the pleasure of taking. I do not mean audibly misunderstood. I mean academically/intellectually. He is honest, brilliant, and very forthcoming. If you do what is expected you will score a high grade. If you do not understand, then ask. He will ALWAYS answer.
This class will sharpen your writing skills, provided you have any in the first place.
This course required lots of work. The skills i learned are quite helpful. The essays and discussions made me think, and dr. Beurtheret's comments s even more. Now i have a better understanding of my world.
By far the best online teacher i ever had. This guy seriously changed the way i view history. Quite a bit of writing, but i learnt new skills that earned me good grades in my other classes. The teacher is quite helpful and answers quickly to emails.
Dr. Beurtheret knows his stuff! He hardly uses the textbook or even notes. He does not need them! I like that he always points out contradictions in history, and explain them by arguing on both sides of the argument. His Western civilization class changed my understanding of our world today. What a great teacher.
It is an amazing professor. This course is what one can expect in college: it deepens critical thinking. My understanding of the world has changed. Do not leave SLCC without taking this Western civilization course.
I took this online course and loved it. Although there was more writing than I expected, the questions were thought provoking and encouraged me to write. I learned a lot of history. The professor is extremely helpful and replies quickly. I highly recommend this class.
Online Western Civ. Course. Interestng. I have learned writing better essays. Syllabus gives clear instructions. Good feedback from professor that helped a lot. Grading is fair.
I took two courses from this professor: western civ and American civ.. He stretched my thinking with comments going beyond the textbook perspective. He wants you to have your own ideas about history, not just repeat what the news say. The grading criteria are clear, yet it took me a semester to implement these criteria. I write much better essays.
The professor was very clear with his expectations in his syllabus. Follow everything to the letter and you will be fine. At the beginning of the semester I was extremely confused by some of the grades I received, but I definitely got accustomed to his wants as time went on.
Grades extremely hard if what you have written doesn't follow his writing styletopic to a T. He does not teach his students at all for the online class and gives hardly any positive feedback. He criticizes your writing and makes you feel stupid and doesn't offer help to make up points from his harsh grading. Made me dislike history classes more.
Beurtheret is not an easy teacher, and really makes you work your brain, but he is a great teacher! He will not let you slide on assignments and will critique you to make you excel highly. The assignments are not easy, but if you follow the methodology's for the discussions and the essays you will ACE this class!
I have enjoyed the class immensely. I have certainly gained a new appreciation for the detailed explanations of what could be improved on throughout the discussions and essays. It will most assuredly help me In future classes. Dr. Beurtheret is obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about history, which is wonderful.
Insists on using his own criteria for writing papers, which is very odd and not in line with the college standard. Grades more off of his specific format than he does actual content. Copy and pastes tests from McGraw-Hill, no comprehension necessary, fact regurgitation.
Excellent teacher. Dedicated and helpful.
By far the most amazing professor I have ever had, and all my classmates agree with me. Take this class!
Learned quite a bit. Helpful prof. Went out of her way so that i could finish the semester.
This class was hard but totally worth it. I love History and was excited to take this class but I really had to work for my grade. I got an A- in this class and was shocked. You have discussions, replies, and tests through out the semester along with 2 five page papers and 1 seven page paper. Once you learn what is expected you can pass.
Easily the most unclear teacher in giving instructions I have ever had. Hard Grader.
While I feel that Professor Beurtheret is very knowledgeable in regards to History. His online class was a nightmare. His instructions were often minimal and unclear, yet his grading was harsh and heavily critiqued. I highly suggest taking this class from another professor as the work you put forth will not be mirrored by the teacher.
He really wasn't clear as far as assignments go. He tends to expect perfection but doesn't really tell you what to do specifically. While he grades generously, don't expect nice comments on any assignment. Chances are good you'll pass, but you'll only get an A if you're a mind reader. Also, nothing is published to canvis.
What a class! Enthusiastic teacher that shares his passion for history. He made me think about what I know, and made it bigger. Papers required more work I thought. He gives detailed comments that made sense. his "methodology" has also been helpful in my poli class. I will take his early world history next semester.
I've had more feedback in the two online courses I've taken from Professor Beurtheret than all my other online classes combined, which is about 6 more. If you need more feedback or want help from him he is always prompt in responding; in fact he's been the best at feedback of any Prof I've had so far period. FOLLOW THE METHODOLOGY in his syllabus!!
He is most certainly knowledgable in terms of history, but he is not a good teacher. He has his own format for writing and if you do not use it, YOU WILL FAIL. He only tells you what is specifically required for his papers AFTER he hands them back and is telling you all about what you did wrong. Seems to look down on students as if he is better...
In this class I felt like I was trying to hit a moving target. The information given for the assignment was not enough to do to the standards of the professor, and only after turning in your assignment for credit would you get what was originally expected. I have gone out of my way to get a different teacher for the next class, HIST 1300.
I enjoyed his class, so I take American history with him this semester. I like class discussions. He is passionate about history, and always points at the other side of the story. He gives clear criteria for tests that we practice in each lesson. He grades nice, yet gives sharp criticism. Quite helpful. I learnt more than I expected.
Inspirationall. I thought I did not like history until I took this course.a whole new view of the world. Engaging professor, thought provoking. Always helpful. He cares.
Class is a little bit stressful because nothing is posted online. The lectures are amazing and if you stay on top of things you'll do okay. Grading is a little bit tough but you get a good feel for it by the end of the semester.
Everything is in-class. No Canvas due dates or anything. He wants you to use good organization on papers and projects, which he calls his "methodology" but is really just intro with thesis, points with evidence, etc, conclusion. I don't know how else you'd organize a paper. He knows a lot and really points out good stuff you might not have noticed.
Very critical grader. If you take his class make sure to study the "methodology". He wants to prepare his students to have an objective stance on past and present events that have taken place. Make sure you do not stray from his writing format and do not wait until the last minute to do a presentation.
very intense and intelligent. be sure to follow his 'methodology' for every assignment. only five assignments the whole year: 3 essays, a signature assignment which are short reflection paragraphs, and a 15 minute oral presentation. Lectures are very interesting and passionate. Very rewarding
I took a class online and he/she expects perfection or something. I literally did my best on all of the papers, following the instructions very closely, but I guess I'm not perfect enough to get a good grade.
Professor Cyriaque Beurtheret is a great teacher of history! If you enjoy learning history from different angles not the ones you have heard in the past. Stick to the methodology and learn it early and this is an easy A. Plus the professor is a ridiculously knowledgeable guy. For sure take this class.
He expects way too much from students in a 1700 class. His methodology for writing papers is different than any that I've ever seen and he grades strictly to it. He seems to know his stuff though. There are easier classes than this for this credit I am positive.
This guy is awesome! He is crazy smart. People whine about his methodology but it is SO EASY TO FOLLOW. Honestly Memorize his methodology, use it for papers, presentations, and the midterm/final. I am the biggest procrastinator ever and I got an A in his class. JUST MEMORIZE METHODOLOGY. Its so simple, do what he asks. strict feedback but generous.
This professor wasn't particularly my favorite but I ended up passing well. He grades hard and presentations can be difficult. Follow the methodology, textbook wasn't needed, your grade will be unknown until the end of the semester, write strictly on the topics he gives you, etc.
This is the worst professor Ive ever had. He was rude and condisending and unclear on all his expectation for assignments. 0/10 stars for sure.
Mr. Beurtheret was not my favorite teacher. He had engaging lectures but he focuses way too much on showing you a different perspective (Usually his own bias) than what most historians agree upon. He does not have a clear grading criterion and you will have no clue what grade you will have until the end of the course. He also grades harshly.
Attendance is not mandatory for grading, but Prof. Beurtheret has an incredible amount of knowledge and interesting points of view to impart on Amer. Civ., and the text has little flavor. Prof. Beurtheret helped change my entire view on American history. Doing extra credit presentations in the class can bolster your grade, and they are easy to do!
Stick close if not exactly to the methodology, he will grade every single thing you present to him or the class based on that. Sometimes it was a little unclear on exactly what do in terms of the objective, but ask questions and you should be on the right track. He makes you think adversely, but also stay on the topic of what is required.
He knows what he's talking about and I think he used to be an anthropologist, so he has lots of cool discoveries from that experience. He's not for everyone though, my classmates found him condescending and unclear. You're required to present at least once and he's not afraid to be blunt with you. I was never bored in his class, he's a good speaker
Dr. Beurtheret is an incredible professor. Very inspiring, and brought tons of new perspectives on a multitude of subjects. If you're looking for a teacher that will exercise your mind and give you a new outlook on life, this is your man. The lectures are both interesting and engaging. He does grade tough, so follow the methodology closely!
He was a interesting person, I read some of the other comments about him and some I agree and some I dont. I didnt understand his lectures because they bounced all over the place and would sometimes say weird things. For a long time I thought he was sexist but I think he is just a hard ass for grading. There is a 12 minute oral speech as well.
I would recommend Dr Beurtheret's course if you want a few large assignments instead of lots of little assignments. His lectures are good and almost always interesting because of how passionate he is but make sure you are early if you want to catch everything. FOLLOW HIS METHODOLOGY and FOLLOW THE TOPIC WORD FOR WORD! and you will be fine.
Worst professor I have had. Puts everyone down that isn't giving the answer he was expecting and sometimes just rewords it and then says its right. He goes on and on about what is NOT the accurate series of events so thats all you can remember. I also couldnt understand his accent at all. Large essays and boring lectures.
This is the most interestng course I took at SLCC. Dr Beurtheret gives balanced perspectives with twist that keep me thinking. Few big papers and many short oral presentations to practice. The techniques he teaches are simple, yet useful, also getting me better grades in my other classes. At first I thought it would be hard, but he is so helpful.
If I could give negative ratings I would. He was never clear on what he wanted with his assignments and docked a lot of points for no reason. It was like he was expecting us to read his mind. For a giant research essay, every single student received a failing grade because no one could figure out what he was expecting after a month of questions.
Best and brightest historian I've ever met. The only thing you have to do to pass the class is learn the methodology and its an easy A. If you are interested in history you need to learn from this guy, he's fantastic. Hands down the best class I've taken, The methodology is a awesome tool, and im so grateful I had the chance to be a part of it.
This class was a mistake. The only assignments include papers and quizzes, you have to teach yourself by reading the textbook, and his expectations are unclear. He doesn't care about teaching history, only his "methodology" and when you ask for clarification or help he won't because it's "unfair to other students". His grading system is misleading.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. He thinks he is the best teacher for giving us this "methodology" for how to write a paper. I was given that same formula in high school. For the midterm and finals he gives you a topic and then that same day you have to submit a 1,000+ word essay about that topic. Save your sanity and don't take him!
This class was by far the hardest history class I have ever taken. He's an extremely hard grader and isn't helpful when you try to ask for help. His lectors are long, boring, and drawn out. I'm glad he's passionate about what he teaches, but he doesn't do a very great job of passing that passion on to his students. So glad I'm done.
Both classes I took were phenomenal and were by far the best experience I've had at SLCC. The insights he presented on each historical period gave an amazing clarity that i've never experienced from any history teacher beforehand. Everything he taught was always worth great consideration and worthy to be understood. I left with new skills.
I completely enjoyed this class. I liked how he ran the class and how the discussions were open and free. I not only learned much about early World history and modern day, but it has helped me immensely in my essay writing skills. I hope I have the time and opportunity to take another class from him.
I've always have been really good at writing papers and have done great in history classes and is my major. He talks the whole lecture. He has a hard accent to understand at times and he will quiz the class. If you ask him questions, he wont directly answer them. He goes on long tangents. Grades HORRIBLY. Run, don't take his class, barely passed.
This class is one of the most useful classes I have taken. I have grown more proficient in all of my studies because of this class. I have used what I learned one day the next day in another class. I feel that this class will be one I never forget. I will always remember Dr. Beurtheret that taught me the vibrant colors of the world and history.
I greatly enjoyed Cyriaque Beurtheret's class this semester and I feel that I am walking away from it with a lot to think about and perspectives that have enriched my already existing knowledge of this period of history.
I really enjoyed Dr. Beurtheret's teaching style and the challenges he asked everyone to rise to. I learned a lot more in this class than I have in my other classes. I had a really great time and loved getting to learn and grow under his methodology and teaching. I hope I can get into another of his classes in the future.
I loved Dr. Beurtheret's class. We only had four assignments due for the entire semester, he does offer extra credit opportunities that can drastically improve your grade. Lecture heavy, and also his grading is strict however he wants you to work on the process of completing your assignment. I would take his class again in a heartbeat.
Very knowledgeable and shows passion for subject matter. Tough grader on papers, but will give specific feedback and provides a very specific methodology.
Lots of lecture with few slides to go with it. He outlines what he wants from your projects but if you miss even one piece of it your grade on it can drop to around a c or even d level on the project.
He is a tough grader, I don't recommend his class. There no way, good luck with decide to take this class (you are going to need it)
This was my hardest class this semester by far. He has 5 signature assignments (including participation) and if you mess up even a little bit, your grade will suffer. Those signature assignments are your grade, that's all. Good luck if you take this class. Very thick accent as well. Nice guy but terrible professor.
Awesome guy, his lectures were captivating and he was a pretty chill person overall. Didn't really need the textbook—he went over everything in class. A pretty easy class, just follow his methodology. Advice for essays (according to Beurtheret): - Mention the topic in every paragraph - Make connections to the topic - Link EVERYTHING to the topic
We had four assignments due for the entire semester, and they were graded heavily. You'll be fine if you follow his methodology. I strongly suggest taking the extra credit opportunities, which significantly improve your grade. And be ready to write cause the word count for the assignments is a lot. Midterm doesn't have a specific date; be cautious.
Professor Beurtheret's class is a mixed bag - his unique teaching methodology can be either a blessing or a curse. While engaging, the heavy focus on essays and quizzes means you'll need to put in the work. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
I dropped his class. He is a highly educated man, but his lectures lack structure. He will go on tangents about irrelevant topics, and will spend class asking open-ended questions. He requires a 15 minute oral presentation with no notes, and expects you to remember the methodology for said presentation. All of this for a Gen Ed class is a bit much.
Beurtheret is a hard grader, no one in my class of 19 people ever got full points. He is very presumptuous of you as a student and will accuse you of things you never did. Many students have complained about his attitude. His expectations are vague and is very insistence on his copyrighted methodology. I recommend Chris Case.
Took for a generals credit, really tough grader, kind of took me the whole semester to figure out what they wanted. Although the grading curve is really generous it was a really unenjoyable class. Taking this online make it feel sterile / chatroom-like, just you alone and text on a screen.
The material itself was not difficult. You read and take a quiz on each section. Easy. But when it came to discussions, which carry the most weight on your grade, the teacher was brutal. With grading they were extremely harsh. A small thing was missed and I received just above half credit for the entire assignment... multiple times.
Took this course for Gen Ed and oh boy was it miserable. The quizzes weren't so bad just reading the textbook and answering the questions but the discussions were rough! The grading was so harsh. The prompts were single sentences that didn't provide much guidance and I often got docked points for not taking the prompts the EXACT way he wanted.
This Professor is very vague on what he wants us to do. Discussion posts are 700-word essays based on a sentence-long prompt. He wants us to follow a strict methodology but it isn't clear. One mistake and you get docked lots of points. Half points on a midterm due to not following the methodology to his standard which changes with each submission.
If you have the option to take anyone else's class - do it. I have never been as frustrated with a professor as I have been with him. His grading is purely subjective to him and unclear. His methodology is made up; it will not benefit you at all to learn from him. He doesn't explain the grades whatsoever and his constructive feedback is useless.
The coursework was ok. Many times the professor will request you write an essay on a broad topic, and take away points for not answering the question fully. I found this very frustrating as many time the professor was asking a broad question, but then required a specific answer. It felt like I had to read between the lines for every assignment.
Online course. Do work whenever but don't miss due dates. Learning curve, but once I read the syllabus it made sense. Learned plenty on Europe history. With teacher's "recipe" called methodology, writing essays is easier, much quicker.
