very sarcastic, difficult to get high grades, overall not friendly
Doesn't say a word of french.
He thinks way too much of himself...very unapproachable
He is a very thoughful individual!

Horrible jerk. Makes Michael Bolton look cool. Nice sweaters!
Dr Gamble treated students with utter disrespect
instruction unclear, and very rude
he's like a condescending mr.rogers.....love the wardrobe.....friggin meanie
very disrespectful. Makes u feel like a piece of trash.

Worst experience ever at university. Very mean in class, no respect.
Excellent. He even offered to delay his sabbatical to teach a course for us.
He likes you if he see's you in class and you'll do good if he likes you.
calls people down to the ground. Very Mean!
So far so good! Little tough but knows his stuff!!
makes you feel very little, even if you are doing excellent in the course.
He's very mean...puts you on the spot, makes you feel like your lazy and stupid...take my advice...CHOOSE ANOTHER PROF!!!!
Mean and disrespectful. I sat in his class for 15 minutes and walked out. Down right conceited, but the reason why has yet to be determined. Nice purse!

can't stand the guy, he is mean and is not fit to be teaching.
not very good
Really knows his stuff, but had better become more sociable and politically correct or he's going to get himself in trouble.
worst prof ever
Pretty intimidating, but if you can get past that he is a very good teacher. I learned a lot from him. I recommend taking his class, especially 4000 level. You may find him scary, but it's worth it. You will learn in his class.
found him to be very conceited and rude... made students feel like complete morons... havent talked to anyone yet who liked him...

He is the anti Mr.Rogers.A french speaking horse would be better.
he sucked big time. he was horrible and made everyone feel stupid.. i would not reccommend anyone take a course with him.
Don Gamble is a very straightforward person. He WILL tell what he thinks. If you build up a repor with him, you can pass burns back and forth eith him. That's fun :) I really liked him, and I still talk to him if I see him in the halls.
Horrid horrid, scary man who made me feel dumb, no wonder i gave up studying french...
RUN!!!!!!!!
Not helpful, going to his class is a very unpleasant experience. He knows what he's talking about, but is unclear in instruction. Rude, ignorant, and overall... bad prof
I agree that he is tough, even rude. However, he wants you to see beyond that. He really does want to help his students and gives very freely of his time. Look beyond the surface. Did I mention that you will learn a LOT?
Do not take his class if you want to learn french. He will only make you feel small and stupid. He does not explain anything and if you don't know the answer he makes you feel very stupid. He is very rude and sacarastic.
How can one describe such an demented Mister Rogers-look-a-like. Worst prof at MUN and further, he tests topics that other classes barely look at. I went from a 92% in French 1500 to a 69% in his French 1501 and I worked twice as hard. He's also rude.
yes, he's tough, and he can be rude...but only if you deserve it! show up to his classes, put the effort in, and ask questions, and you'll be just fine. i learned sooo much in his course, and you can too, but you have to work for it. loved him as a prof.
Cut him some slack. He knows his material very well, and really wants the best for his students. Challenges and motivates you. I can't understand why he is always stuck with first year, because he's much better in 4th yr. Work hard, get rewarded.
Excellent!
If you want to feel sick to your stomach every time you turn the corner to go to class, then take this course from Dr. Gable. What a horrible experience. I didn't come to MUN to listen to an ignorant, arrogrant man say that he's ashamed to be Canadian.
Dr.Gamble is a horrible evil man. He is the reason I changed my minor from french, the reason I am NEVER taking french again, and the reason I went from an 85% in 1500 to a 56% in 1501 (which I had to work my ass off for). YOU ARE WARNED!!!!
Dr. Gamble is a sad little man who feels empowered by treating his students like crap stuck on a shoe. He is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had and he really is EVIL. Dr. Gamble took great pleasure in making me and most of my classmates feel extemely stupid. Warning: Stay away!!!!!!
I love french! and this man made me feel so stupid! He completely ruined french for me and I got a horrible grade in his course. Every day I had to force myself to go to class. Worst prof. yet
Oh my god, he should be fired!! He told me off in front of 45 people cause I couldn't hear him. I loved french before his class now i'm to freaked out to even speak up in any class.
THE DEVIL.... RUN!!! He has got to be one of the worst profs at MUN. He's very intiminating and like to make you look stupid. He is definitely a prof you love to hate. Would not recamend this prof.

Gamble is hilarious. As long as you do your work, your on his good side. You'll end up enjoying his humour instead of being his victim. Highly entertaining!!
Excellent Prof. He is willing to help you if you ask the questions. Be prepared to be embrassed by his sarcastic comments if you do not stay on top of your work. A lot better prof and nicer than you are made to believe. Funny Man!
I remember that class, it was a mine feild of terrible comments, however, I still use some of his more scathing remarks when I am so inclined. Makes you learn thru fear and discourse. It works sure, but Good God, it's stressful.
I was warned about taking a class eith him, but it was not that bad. He's a hard marker, and does not mind embarassing you, but fair. During my interview he said "I reward effort, and I know you've tried your hardest" So he does care, and he is a good teacher.
i hope he's the worst prof in MUN b/c I couldn't handle having anyone worse than him. I WILL be taking more Fren. courses if not for my interest than to prove him wrong! Word of advice, take a recorder into orals, i will NEVER be caught without one ever again. Asked Q's that weren't in the course!
Wow, I have to say I loved that man, he's so funny the way he just floats around, he's challenging, and he really made me work! Thanks to him I actually understand french now! But careful, his comments can kill but just laugh it off he's harmless!
He is a good prof and he explains things well. He's just not a people person. The couse was not enjoyable for that reason. I wouldn't recommend him as a proff if you do not have a strong french skills.
Course was very hard, well actually his marking is very hard!! He had lots of not-so-nice comments during class, but isn't that bad in the interview or one-on-one!! I wouldn't really suggest taking a course from him, the average students mark will DROP!!!
He pushes you hard by challenging you. He will not spoonfeed you, but make you work. Exactly as a university teacher should. Those looking for easy marks need not apply.
I don't know about 1st year, but 3rd & 4th year courses with him are amazing. Brilliant man, passionate about literature. Very funny, and will do anything he can to help. Expects students to work for their grades and have good grammar. Highly recommended, he's friendly once you get past the sarcasm.
I had this prof, lived to tell about it and did another course with him. Yes, he is hard, sarcastic and will pass tests back in grade order so EVERYONE knows who got the lowest and highest mark BUT he is excellent. Worth the pain.

Loved him--thought he was the best French prof I've had since I started MUN. Extremely funny, made class enjoyable, and taught me more in one semester than I've learned in 10 others!! A little eccentric, but a cool guy!! Get used to his brand of humour, you'll really benefit from his courses.
Horrible prof. Spent all class complaining about the french program and picking on students. Never actually taught anything.

This man is RUDE! Point blank! He is not a nice person ..at all!
This man is THE rudest, most pompus arrogant man I have ever met. He spent the classes picking on students and basically calling them stupid. He has no interest in his students and should RETIRE to make everyone else happy. his tests suck. He gives them back IN ORDER and makes snide remarks. WORST PROF EVER
This man, is halarious. I loved his class so much. I looked forward to it! Some may find him rude, but he's actually just interested in making sure his students reach thier full potential. He makes outlines test very clearly and goes over it. For his class, just make sure to read the few pages he says he is going to be covering in class. Great Man
For a man that prides himself on his intelligence he can be pretty ignorant to what a professor is supposed to do. Instead of teaching his students French, he spent the whole class making rude remarks and basically making the students feel stupid. He is so rude and obnoxious that I almost didn’t continue with French!
This prof is not very clear at all... he can be a little mean and rude at times, and he expects a lot from his students... but if you work hard, you'll be fine
I can understand how some students can feel intimidated by this prof, but if you make an honest effort and work hard, you'll do fine... He's very helpful and actually very nice, it's only when he calls on you in class and when you get the wrong answer will he be kind of a jerk. Just don't take it personally! His exams are really easy!
I never learned so much in my life has what I learned in one Gamble course. I'm pretty sure he knows everything. If you want to leanr something, don't be a wuss and take Gamble's course.
Gamble is the best prof in this university. He makes you learn the material. He must know everything about french and his test are hard but he prepares you well. He is soooo great :)
At first I was convinced that this man was some sort of devil, but once you get past his unusual sense of humor and (occasional) rude comments, he's actually one of the most helpful and knowledgeable professors I have come across at MUN. He wants you do to well, but he expects you to work hard. Gotta love the Mr. Rogers sweaters.
rude ****
Smart man, an expert on the grammar of several languages. Most I've learned in 1 course. When you haven't done your homework or make obvious mistakes he won't be too kind but do your homework, work hard, listen to what he has to say and you will easily reap the benefits. Respects those who show respect in his class, no tolerance for laziness! A+
as a first year student, i was afraid of dr.gamble from reading all these ratings but he is probably my favorite prof. he will ask you questions but i find he is very understanding if you don't know the answer. he is HILARIOUS and i would do anything to take another one of his classes!!! great prof, try and get him!
I'd heard some nasty things about Prof. Gamble and was at first apprehensive. However, he has turned out to be a fantastic and effective, if demanding, professor. Highly recommended!
Dr.Gamble is frightening at first. Every class consists of him asking every student in the room the answer to his questions. I've never had a prof like him at mun before! He's really mean sometimes, but he's very smart and he will make sure you understand anything about french before proceeding. If you can ignore his comments...
Good prof. Learned more in his course than in any other french course I have ever taken. Highly recommend him if you will do work and show up to class.
This man made me change my mind on French. I will never do another course again. Very mean, rude, no sense of humour, and very degrading. Avoid if at all possible.
Dr Gamble is great! He has a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor, so people who get offended by him are probably taking him too seriously. He will pick on people to answer questions, but I got a million answers wrong in his class and it was not a big deal at all! If he knows you are trying he will respect you.
He was condescending and arrogant, so along with his rude comments, he was not a pleasant teacher to have. He picked favorites, and you knew who they were. I'm sure he could be helpful if you're not afraid to go to him, but he'd probably make you feel like an idiot. If you do take his course, you might want to ask another student questions not him.
Gamble is a love/hate prof. He asks you questions and is rude if you don't answer correct. VERY INTIMIDATING! Makes mean jokes and made me DREAD going to class. If you plan to continue french then you should probably take him because he will push you 2 your potential, but if you are just filling space then stay away. YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HIS CLAS
I don't understand the amount of negative comments, I assume that most come from people who don't go to class or who don't know the answers to his questions. He is a fair prof, rewards those who go to class and will even help those who don't. He has no time for slackers and that isn't a bad thing! Don't blame the prof for your own shortcomings!
Good advice: Dont wear bold prints or flashy colors. He loves commenting on them by saying "Oh girl in the back with that lovely coral or bright pink sweater on which is quite nice, answer number 2!" then if you answer it wrong he makes you feel like very stupid.. I found him alright in the end cause i learned what he liked from students.
oh my god, this guy is awesome. Not only does he know his stuff and know how to teach it, he's hilarious to boot. He loves languages, grammar and he sincerely wants to form a student-prof bond with you. Go to class and he'll remember you and you'll be rewarded for it. BRING YOUR TEXT, DON'T THINK YOU'LL GET AWAY WITH NOT BUYING IT!
I adored this man so much! I can see why people don't like him but if you come to class, pay attention and do the work you will get good results and learn so much. I learned more from him in this one class then I learned in all of my years of french immersion. Has very dry humor and I am definitley getting him again next semester!
Very knowledgeable, you will definately learn a lot in this class- very much worth your while (and money). At first (and probably later on too) he seems pretty harsh, but you learn to find it kinda funny- just don't take it to heart! He can be a little hard to hear when he mumbles, but his french is great, he has good explaination and is quite fair
Great prof, really knows what he's talking about. You have to learn not to take his jokes seriously. Always late for class and keeps it a few minutes late though. Big on textbook. If you're not interested in French you probably won't enjoy him though.
The bomb!
amazing prof
Gamble is intimidating, yes, but he does care. He only calls on the people in class again and again to make sure you learn. He can tell who is capable of more. When you show him interest, he returns that interest to you. Read your book and do your homework and you'll survive. I'd probably take another course with him.
He is terrible! Made you feel so stupid, did not care how well you did, tried to scare you out of his class from the very first class. He was also late for every class and kept you late, and he'll still make you regret being late for class. He is very mean and rude. Should not be teaching! Do yourself and your GPA a favor and stay away from him!
Really good prof. Still go to him for help with french compositions. Teaches the course in english so that you can actually understand it and he encourages you to ask questions. If he asks you for answers in class, it means that he knows your smart.
He can be hard to understand at times, but he's highly intelligent and perhaps intimidatingly so at times. The better your attendance, the better you'll do. He can make snide or condescending remarks, but I've never felt insulted. His sense of humour is rather dry, and he often compares French to other languages, which can sometimes be confusing.
He is a very rewarding prof and he's good with returning marks on time. The better your attendance, the better you'll do. He can make snide or condescending remarks, but I've never felt insulted. His sense of humour is rather dry, and he often compares French to other languages, which can sometimes be confusing.
At first Dr. Gamble will seem intimidating and condescending. Go to class and keep up with the material. If you can move past his rude remarks, you will learn a great deal. He is very knowledgeable, although he will never remember your name!
I personally thought he was awesome, but I can see how people feel intimidated by him. You have to work (HARD) for your mark, but his teaching is not about what grade you can get but how much you can actually learn (also about yourself). I would pick him for any French course, any given time.
He is very, very intelligent and adores french. However, he is rude, makes very inappropriate comments, and treats you as though you are inferior. If you can put up with all of this and go to class, you will learn a lot. (just remember that's a lot easier said then done)
He is one of the most interesting, intelligent and comical people I think I've every met. First couple of weeks, it feels like you've walked into Dracula's lair, but this becomes rather funny after a while. You can learn a lot from him, and he makes you want to learn even more! Will try to take another one of his classes for sure!
At first he seems really mean and he says rude things, but don't take it personally. He's a really funny guy. He is the best french prof I ever had. He really does care how you do in class and is willing to answer any questions. Just read your textbook and go to class. Don't expect him to remember your name.
He's good at explaining the concepts of French but he is arrogant. If you ask him a simple question he speaks down to you. Great prof, terrible people skills and personality.
He is a terrible man.He is makes his students feel so stupid. He thinks he is the most intelligent human on the planet and everyone else is dumb.He doesn't help you if you go to see him after class;instead he talks down to you and tells you all the things you do wrong and tries to convince you to drop his course because "you are not smart enough"
This prof is not for everyone. Makes inappropriate jokes (which I found funny). Fairly difficult marker but knows his stuff! Obsessed with grammar. A bit intimidating but not terrible.
Gamble's best kind. I say, if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen!
Gamble is a great prof. and knows his material thoroughly. If you want to get good at French - this is your course. If you want the language credit or an easy mark - stay away. This course requires ALOT of practice. Gamble is a funny prof, if you show a genuine interest in the material and ask questions he'll make sure you do well. Highly recommend
The first week of classes I thought he was really mean and strict, but he became my favourite prof. He engages the class, and knows everybody's name. I learned so much in this class. He uses english to explain thoroughly which I found very helpful. Gamble is actually very friendly and makes you want to go to class and do well.
This was an amazing course and Gamble was an excellent professor. I heard terrible things before taking the course, but if you were there to work, it paid off. He recognized who was putting the effort in and who wasn't. If you have the chance to take the course and he is the prof, I'd highly recommend it. Never learned so much as I did with him.
Best way to learn French is to take a course with Dr. Gamble. I found him very intimidating at first, but by the end of the semester I loved him. He learns everyone's name, and interacts with everyone in the class. If you study, ask questions and go to class, you should have no problems with Dr. Gamble. By far my favourite prof.
Is confusing when he speaks. Seems to speak in code. Teaches the language like a science, he really likes to break apart every part of the sentence and ask questions about it. He calls on you to answer his questions even if you dont want to. I would avoid him if you have the choice. Kind of ruined my interest in the french language.
Cet course est horrible! C'est tellement plat car c'est enseigné complètement en anglais. Le prof prend plus de temp à enseigné la grammaire anglais que le français. Je ne recommend pas de tous cet cours! Je n'ai appris riens.
I wanted to do a french minor until I met this guy. He is literally the worst person I have ever met, he is racist, sexist and misogynistic. I honestly don't know how he has kept a job interacting with the public. Be ready to be picked on in class and made fun of if you're wrong. Avoid at all costs
I took a class with Dr. Gamble a few semesters ago and he is a really great prof who is helpful and really cares about his students. I would love to take another class with him in the future.
I found he was condescending and I felt nervous to answer questions in case I was wrong. He will call on you during class to answer questions which makes sure you are always ready. Overall, I did not like going to his class but I did fairly well in the course. And, after starting a new French class with a dif prof, realized maybe he wasnt so bad..
Really not as bad as everyone says. If you attend class and do the work, you will do fine. He can be intimidating at first, but once you get to know him, you can see that he cares about his students and is passionate about the material. Would take him again
